Compliments of the Season to all our readers. I trust you all have a blessed time together over the break, enjoy time with family and friends and get fully refreshed for the New Year ahead We personally will be catching up with family just after Christmas as Henry (my grandson) and his family are off to Perth to visit the other Grandma and PaPa. Katie and her family will be down from Melbourne and our Son Geoff will be visiting from Singapore. Someone said to me recently that we have a much busier time at Christmas in Australia, compared with the UK and America, who have just the one main event. We have Christmas, New Year, School Year changeovers, Office Parties etc. etc. while the UK have Christmas and America have Thanksgiving. Not to belittle those events, but, we do it all with high temperatures, bushfires etc. and no snow! but a decent dumping of rain to start off summer. But to you and yours, have a great Christmas, enjoy the break and see you with the next Leigh News..........in Feb.

‘INVERLEIGH TENNIS CLUB NEWS’

The Inverleigh Tennis Club is re born, up and running and competing in the summer junior competition. An extra special meeting was held on 24th August in the clubrooms to elect office bearers, with a mixture of new and regular faces coming together to form a new committee with optimism for the future. The committee consists of the following: President: Shane Lubcke Vice President: Cam Parke Secretary: Catherine Friend Treasurer: Campbell Brumby/Glenise Stevens Junior/Senior Co-ordinator: Jo Mullen Lyndall Brumby and Rachel Lubcke have created a Facebook page for the club and were pivotal in finding juniors keen to have a hit and fill the teams. Within a week of the meeting we had enough players to be graded and now have 3 junior teams competing in the Geelong Tennis Inc 17/18 summer competition which commenced on October 14th. The format consists of 4 players per team, playing a total of 6 sets (4 singles and 2 doubles). Each set is the first to six games with juniors playing both a singles and a doubles match. Being the beginner grades, the kids also get to play with low compression tennis balls, a terrific initiative which slows the pace of the ball to allow the kids to get more involved in the play. Learning to serve from the baseline has been a major focus leading up to the start of competition – if we can’t get a serve over the net we won’t have any rallies! Nicole Mullen, a young tennis coach from Geelong kindly worked with the players for five weeks leading up to the start of competition and has been taking the kids for tennis lessons each Thursday afternoon at 3.30pm, directly after school finishes. The children have enjoyed the coaching sessions immensely and the improvement they have shown in only a few short months is great to see.

3

Our 3 junior teams consist of: Section 20: Zephyr Spillard, Keegan Spillard, Jake Goodman and Heath Barnes. Section 22: Inverleigh Brown - Hugh Brumby, Archer Brumby, Perri Brumby, Molly Inglis, Matilda Inglis and Georgia Collins. Inverleigh Gold - Ethan Lubcke, Jock McCann, Cydney McCann, Ellie Broadhurst, Clara Blersch and Lucy Blersch. We wish them all luck for the remainder of the season! The summer competition breaks for x-mas on Dec 16th and re-commences on Feb 3rd 2018. The club would gladly welcome any new players who would like to join up and play competitively or perhaps just begin some tennis lessons to improve. All enquires please contact: Jo Mullen on 0414 957 432. Junior coaching is available on both Monday and Thursday afternoons at 3.30pm directly after school as follows: • Monday - Nathan Mayes • Thursday - Nicole Mullen The club rooms will be open on these days and we encourage people to come for a social hit with family and friends – we have plenty of spare balls that can be used! Moving forward into next year, we are endeavouring to generate enough interest to begin both mid-week ladies and senior tennis in some capacity. But for now, we are very proud of our little band of junior hot shots and you can see them most Saturday mornings at the courts terrorising their opponents! Good hitting, Hawk Eye.

POLICE REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2017

Hello all, Doesn’t time pass so quickly. I have been stationed in the town for three years now, and another summer is fast approaching. I ask that people be vigilant on the roads over the holidays as we always get an increase in holiday related traffic passing through the town. Many of the drivers are unfamiliar with the roads in the area and may overtake etc in inappropriate places. I would like everybody to get through the holidays without being involved in any road collisions as they can be traumatic for the people involved, their family and friends and also for attending Police, ambulance, CFA and SES members. Over the summer we also experience an increase in the people starting to frequent the river camping areas. Unfortunately a group last weekend thought it would be alright to ride trail bikes around the tracks and roads in the area. I caught one who received fines for not wearing a helmet, riding an unregistered motorcycle and riding without a motorcycle licence. Their camping site was littered with rubbish. After apprehending the rider and talking to the group about their behaviour the rest of the group put the

motorcycles back on the trailers and cleaned up the site. If anyone witnesses poor behaviour in the area please let the council or myself know. Photos or video of offending parties can be of great assistance. I would like to remind residents that fire restrictions are in place and if anybody is contemplating any type of fire (camping etc) they should check with the CFA about the restrictions/regulations. Burn offs are pretty much banned unless a permit has been issued. On another note the volunteer list for mowing the hall lawn is down to about four people. Surely in a town this size there is more than four people who can assist to keep the lawn and gardens at such a centre piece of the town neat and tidy. If there were 12 volunteers it would mean mowing it about once a year. There is normally an article further along in the news on how to volunteer.

Keep safe especially over the holiday season. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Chris

PEEL FAMILY PICNIC ON THE WAY TO LORNE

By 1879 both Cobb and Co’s and Mountjoy’s coaches met the 9.30 am train at Winchelsea. From there Lorne visitors commenced a six hour coach journey. They stopped for lunch at Deans Marsh while the team of horses rested.

From Deans Marsh the coach road was contoured around the hillsides. The horses struggled on steep grades pulling up to 26 passengers and their luggage. On the steepest hills the menfolk were requested to get out and push the coach. Travellers in the slow moving coaches along the road were amazed at the vast panorama of changing scenery. “Fern gullies can be seen to the right or left, and presently a glimpse of the sea becomes visible ahead of us.” Upon reaching Lorne the horses crossed the Erskine River at a shallow ford near the present road bridge. LIONS CLUB FOOD FOR FAMILIES APPEAL REPORT People in the Inverleigh area have responded generously to the Lions Food For Families appeal that will help needy households over the Christmas period. Donations of food have been pouring in at collection points in Inverleigh, but more is needed to make Christmas a happier time for those in need of a helping hand. Any non-perishable items such as canned foods, pasta, sauces, long-life milk, tinned hams, canned fruit and biscuits can be left in collection baskets at the Inverleigh Hotel, the Inverleigh Bakery and the Inverleigh General Store. The Stockdale and Leggo real estate office in Bannockburn is also accepting donations. The Inverleigh-Leigh Valley Lions Club, which is running the appeal in conjunction with the Bannockburn Lions, has voted to give $500 to buy food for the appeal. All the food collected will be handed over to three

charitable organisations, the Salvation Army, Geelong’s 3216 Connect Charity and Spare Meals Geelong, for distribution to families in need. The appeal closes on December 16. David Walpole, the president of the Inverleigh Lions, said the club was delighted with the response to the appeal. “The people of Inverleigh and surrounding areas are renowned for their generosity and they have shown their community-minded spirit once again in this appeal,” David said. “However, we are hoping for many more donations to make Christmas a little merrier for families who need a helping hand. Even donations of one can of food can make a difference. Many families are doing it tough at the moment, and Christmas can add to the pressure on them.” The Lions Club is keen to hear of any families in the Inverleigh area who may need help from the appeal. David can be contacted on 0429 958 769.

Christmas 2017 - Message from the Catholic Parish of Meredith

One morning some years ago a baby, Jesus, was born and he grew up and lived some years, spending his last few years proclaiming that we must love God and love each other as God loves us. He was crucified, died and rose again. In the process it became evident that this was God among us, completing our understanding of how God works with us. We are again approaching that moment of the year when we marvel that God would come to us and journey with us so that we can journey to God. Yet ‘Christmassy’ things have been around for months and free-to-air TV announcing the real meaning of Christmas and what Christmas means to people – without once mentioning Jesus the Christ and who he is. I don’t want to sell you anything. I just want to give you a gift of God’s blessing through me: “May the blessing of Almighty God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit come down upon you and remain with you this Christmas! PS: please seriously consider joining us for an Advent and a Christmas service and hearing a little about the God who loves you. And by the way you can and may call us if you need some help: we can’t fix all problems but who knows how we can help if you don’t ask. God bless, Fr Charles Parish Priest Catholic Parish of Meredith 5286 1230

WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH Congratulations to the fourteen Golden Plains Shire primary schools that participated in VicHealth’s Walk to School month. This year, all primary schools in the Shire took part, which is a great achievement – well done to the community! Walk to School is held each year in October to encourage students and their families to consider ways they can incorporate walking, riding or scooting to school into their regular routine. While walking to or at school was the key activity, students and local families were able to participate in a range of fun initiatives, such as the ‘Golden Plains Rocks’ treasure hunt for hand-painted rocks. Families also got involved in community walks and the ‘Walk the Shire’ challenge, and weekly fruit was delivered to students and staff!

ACHIEVEMENTS IN GOLDEN PLAINS 

Over 20,000 walks were conducted during the Walk to School period

1,320 local students participated

8,000 pieces of fruit were delivered to schools throughout the Shire

8 ‘park and walk’ locations were identified and promoted by schools

155 members joined the Golden Plains Rocks Facebook page thanks to a partnership with Haddon Community Learning Centre

Woady Yaloak Primary School Ross Creek campus saw all classes completing the Walk the Shire challenge (congratulations to the grade 3/4 class who completed 350km first!)

Teesdale Primary School completed 3,000 walks

Lethbridge Primary School did a fantastic job in their promotion and involvement in Golden Plains Rocks

Haddon Primary School participated for the first time this year, with students and families walking before and after school.

Golden Plains Shire Council received funding from VicHealth to support schools to participate in Walk to School. If you have any ideas about walking initiatives to engage your school community in active travel, please contact Belinda Hynes, Community Wellbeing Officer on 5321 1500.

THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE Christine Windle, Garden Gate Nursery, Inverleigh

Small Projects for Your Garden I love a small, achievable project, something that creates beauty or is practical and useful in the garden. Even better if it is something the whole family can enjoy doing. Here are a few that you might like to try. Turn a wooden pallet into a vertical garden This is a great idea for small spaces, creating interest, hiding an eyesore, dry areas, as a divider, or bringing a garden closer to the house or barbecue. Find a pallet - hardwood if possible as it will last longer. Work on it at the spot you want it to remain, because it will be heavy to move once planted up. Lay it flat on the ground with the side with the smaller gaps facing down. Tack or staple weed mat or shade cloth over the surface facing up and over all the open edges. Secure the cloth or mat to the cross bars as well. Turn the pallet over. Leave it flat on the ground. Decide which way up it will go when it is upright. Fill well with good quality potting mix with some compost mixed in. Water gently and thoroughly. Cover with wads of straw, tucking it in behind the wood – this serves as mulch and also helps to keep the soil in. Decide if you will plant in every horizontal gap or in every second one. With the pallet still flat on the ground, create holes in the mulch and plant small plants that do not need too much root space. Choose plants that will suit the aspect and amount of sun or shade your pallet garden will receive. An edible garden might have oregano, thyme and calendulas in the top, lots of strawberries in the middle rows and basil and parsley at the bottom. A floral wall might have pigface along the top then African daisies with cotton lavender for foliage contrast for all the rows. Succulents all over can look beautiful and will be a low water option. Water the plants in. Leave the pallet on the ground for a few weeks so the plants can start growing. Carefully lift the pallet up into position and ensure it is secure. Pull back the weedmat/shadecloth from the top edge and fold it behind the pallet or cut it off.

You will mostly water the garden along this top edge, with the moisture trickling down through the potting mix to the bottom. Decide on your watering method before you mulch and plant the top row with toughies that can cope with the most exposed position. Watering options include a dripper hose, ‘planting’ bottles or containers with holes in their sides and bottoms along the row so that you can put

Use a shallow dish or unused bird bath about 45 cm wide and nearly fill it with a layer of sand. Include some twigs for landing on and a few flat stones for the butterflies to sun themselves on. Add water so that the sand is slightly moist, not dripping. Attract butterflies to your puddler by putting out some cut overripe fruit or orange slices. Plant plants with masses of open flowers that are easy for butterflies to spot and get nectar from. Research what plants are on the menu for the different species of butterflies in your area. Centrepiece for an outside table Look for an interesting salad bowl or casserole dish in an op shop. Use a masonry drill to carefully drill a drain hole in the bottom. Fill with potting mix and small size succulents or herbs. Succulents will be hardier but herbs are useful, just needing a bit more water. Happy Gardening, Christine Windle, Garden Gate of Inverleigh Nursery, 0403 267 286, www. gardengatenursery.com.au

in quite a bit of water which will slowly drip out, or gentle hand watering. Edible/Decorative Cubby House If you are making a structure for beans, cucumbers or other vegies to climb on, consider shaping it so that it becomes a temporary cubby house. The simple teepee will work if it has a wide enough base. Initially you can plant short term crops in the interior, such as lettuces, spinach and radishes; something that can be harvested by the time your climbers have really got going. It will become a shady spot for children to play in while you work in the garden. Butterfly Puddler Butterflies cannot drink from open water. They suck up moisture from damp soil and sand. Select a sheltered spot which will not be windy but can be sunny.

• Nursery Wide range of hardy garden plants • 14cm pots $7 Country garden and orchard setting featuring many plants available in the nursery. Open:Thursday - Saturday, 10 - 4 “Often open at other times, ring to check.”

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM ST. PAULS ANGLICAN CHURCH-INVERLEIGH Christmas is just around the corner. It comes quickly doesn’t it? Christmas has changed a bit over the years. Some large stores seem to be moving away from the very word itself and “Christmas Cakes” are now called “Festive Cakes”, “Christmas” decorations are nor “Holiday” decorations and “Happy Holiday” has replace “Merry Christmas”. But, despite all of this, Christmas will always be the commemoration of God’s coming into the world. He came for all of us - believers and non-believers alike, for you and me. His birth should bring us hope. It should dispel the sadness from our lives. But after years of celebrating Christmas after Christmas many of us are yet to see that sadness lifted from our lives and our hopes have, perhaps, way to despair. Has the Messiah really come? If He has where is He? Why doesn’t He bring the triumph that dispels the sadness of humanity? The real problem today is that we’re waiting for God to literally come to us. We celebrate His birth just like that of any one of us - offering prayers, eating, drinking and making merry. We celebrate his coming into the world but we do not welcome Him into our hearts and lives. Yes, He has come into the world and is very much in our midst but unfortunately we refuse to recognize Him therefore fail to welcome Him. By being born to poor parents, in an environment of extreme poverty, Jesus is telling us where He dwells - not in places

of grandeur and glamor but among the poor and the down-trodden, the sick and dying, the hungry, the oppressed and in those we love and even in those we hate. In short He is among the masses. Amidst our celebrations this Christmas, let’s slow down to look around us to recognize the real Jesus who was born into the world two thousand years ago. He’s among us in every person and in every trial and suffering we encounter in our lives. Let’s take a moment to look around to recognize Him in those who don’t have joy and peace in their lives. Let’s do the little within our means to alleviate the pain and misery in their lives. Let’s do whatever we can to give them the hope that one day the sadness will be wiped out from their lives. We too, like Jesus, must have the humility to come down from our positions of comfort and power to meet Him in the people around us. If we isolate ourselves from others by building a fortress around us with all our wealth and power, greed, selfishness and pride, then we can keep waiting for Jesus all our lives but it will only be in vain. But if we actually look for him and take steps to recognise Him, the ‘Christ” will be put back into “Christmas”. Tips to keep your pet safe during the holidays

Everyone at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday period. Thank you for entrusting us with the care of your pets. We know they are an important part of your family.

Christmas is a time of cheer for humans but for pets it can mean a change in routine, new and potentially dangerous objects around the home, higher noise levels and more visitors. In this newsletter we will give some tips to help keep your pets safe during the festive and summer season.

Festive Feasts

Always remember that pets are not human and have different digestive systems to us. The following list includes a number of foods that are dangerous and potentially life threatening to our pets. Cooked Bones: They can fracture teeth, cause constipation. Splintered bones can create blockages in the digestive system and require surgical removal. Fatty Meats: That fat in our favourite meats can cause gastrointestinal upset or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is the inflamation of the pancreas. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or in appetance. Christmas Cake: Is full of dried fruit. Raisins and sultanas can lead to renal or kidney problems. Nuts may cause weakness, panting and nervous system damage.

Our pets are part of our family, and while some of them holiday with us, others stay behind eagerly awaiting our return. We have listed a few things to remember whether you are taking your pet with you or leaving it in the care of family, friends or a boarding facility. • Ensure your pet’s microchip registration details are correct. • Vaccinations and health check should be up to date. • If your pet is on medication or a special diet, make sure you have sufficient supplies for the duration of your holiday.

Avocado: Found in many tasty dips and salads causes vomiting, diarrhoea and heart congestion. Alcohol: Causes vomiting, diarhoea, depression, slow respiration, excitement and potential cardiac arrest. Onions and Garlic: Damage red blood cells and can cause anaemia.

Summer Temperatures

With the temperatures rising we seek refuge in our air conditioned homes, at the beach or under the shade of a tree. Unfortunately it is not as easy for our pets to stay cool. Being covered by fur works well in the winter, but it can make it difficult to manage the summer heat. The heat can affect your pet in a number of ways.

printed on carbon neutral paper

• If you are leaving your pet in the care of family or friends give them the contact details for the clinic. • Learn about the area you are travelling to - the potential risks and common parasites. • Telephone or drop into the clinic and let us know you will be going away. • Long road trips can be tiresome for pets. Regular breaks for food, water, toileting and exercise will make the journey more enjoyable. • Make sure there is good ventilation. It is hotter on the floor of a car and in the back of a station wagon.

Heat stroke and burns are the most common. Heat stroke occurs when the body’s temperature is elevated beyond a point, and has potential to cause harm to the body system. Early Signs of Heat Stroke: Panting Excessive Salivation Wobbly Gait Vomiting Disorientation Left untreated, heat stroke may cause damage to vital organs and in severe cases result in death. Remember your pets don’t wear shoes, so the pads of their paws can be burned walking across hot asphalt or sand.

Keeping Cool:

Pocket pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds are particularly susceptible to heat. If possible bring these animals indoors during the hot weather. If this is not possible provide a sturdy icepack or a frozen bottle of water. You can also drape their enclosure with wet towels. If your pet seems to be in discomfort, try wetting its feet and misting water onto its face. This works well for dogs, cats, ferrets, poultry and caged birds as many animals control their body temperature through their feet.. Do not saturate a bird’s feathers as this can cause them to go into shock. Provide plenty of fresh, cool water. Supply numerous water sources in case one is spilt. Add some ice to the water to keep it cool. Supply a shallow pool (to avoid drowning) in the shade so your dog can wade in the water.

SNAKES

We have seen a number of snake bite victims already this summer. Our canine pets are inquisitive and will often chase or attempt to kill snakes, while our feline friends possess that hunting and chasing instinct. If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake you should immobilise your pet and try to keep him/her as quiet as possible. It is vital you seek Veterinarian treatment immediately. The sooner your pet receives medical treatment, the better their chance of survival. Often dogs and cats will show immediate symptoms, we have listed the main ones. Salivation Dilated pupils Shaking or twitching Vomiting Rapid breathing Loss of bladder and bowel control Sudden weakness followed by collapse

TEESDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Hello everyone The end of the year is fast approaching, but we still have a very full schedule to fit in before school finishes on Friday 22nd December. The Prep-2 classes are having a Celebration Excursion on Wednesday December 20th to Geelong Waterfront. The 3/4 classes are heading off to Lady Northcote Camp for 3 days from the 6-8 December and they are looking forward to having a great time at camp. Senior 5/6 classes are celebrating the end of another successful year with an excursion to the Melbourne Docklands Precinct and the Melbourne Star Wheel. Hope you can come along and enjoy the Whole School Learning Expo on the afternoon of Monday 18th December. The students enjoy showcasing the work they have completed during the term.

Year 6 Graduation

The end of the year celebrations conclude with our Year 6 Graduation to be held in the Teesdale Hall on Thursday 21st December. We hope that our graduating students and their families have a night to remember and we wish the students all the best for the future. Orientation Day for our new students coming to Teesdale PS in 2018 will be held on Tuesday 12th December. We invite new students to join the classroom activities and give them a chance to view the new school surroundings and make new friends. Parents will meet with our staff for a short information session and tour of the school facilities. We are looking forward to welcoming our new students and their families and hope that they have a smooth transition into our school in 2018. Please feel free to contact the school on 5281 5218 during school hours if you require any further information regarding enrolment.

the garden and kitchen, donating supplies, attending our café, helping to make or buying our preserves, it all goes to support our program and all contributions are greatly appreciated. The highlight this year was without a doubt the celebration of our 10 year anniversary of our program. It was a great mix of past and present staff, parents and volunteers who have considerably contributed to the program over the last 10 years. We were thrilled to have Rebecca Naylor CEO and Clare McClelland Engagement Manager from the Foundation attending our event, as well as past Principal and ‘Founding Father’ Brent Richards.

School Staffing and Planning 2018

We continue the process of finalising staffing for 2018. We are delighted to announce that we will have two Prep Year level classes next year. Each class will be approximately 15 students. The classrooms will be next to each other and allow the teachers to plan and work together. We are currently in a staff selection process to select a new teacher for our team. We are also delighted to announce that we have provisionally appointed Rhys Lindsay to the role of Learning Specialist. The role is a classroom-based role where the teacher is also available for other teachers to visit their class and model from their teaching strategies.

Enrol now for 2018

If you would like to know more about our school, please phone us during school hours on 5281 5218 or head to our website at: www. teesdaleps.vic.edu.au. Don’t forget to read our newsletters online at our website, or on the Parent Portal on Sentral. Printed copies can still be obtained from the school office or at The Teesdale Store.

School Council

At our final School Council meeting for 2017, School Council discussed many of the achievements of our whole school this year. I would like to highlight some of the achievements that we have, as a team, completed this year to improve the teaching and learning environment: 1. Implementation of a Coaching Program for teachers 2. Instigated a partnership with CentaCare Ballarat to deliver parenting programs at Teesdale 3. Upgrades to our play space – including a performance stage 4. Learning Specialist Teacher appointment. We are certainly committed to processes to support our continuous improvement in the many facets of school life. We are also strategically planning many new initiatives in 2018.

Kitchen/Garden Program

It’s been another wonderful year in our integrated science/ kitchen/garden program. Students have followed and observed the seasons learning what to plant when, how to care for the soil and how to make great compost using our fruit and vegie waste just to name a few things! Thank you to the fabulous volunteers and parents who have supported the program over the year. Whether it’s been helping out in

Important Dates

MAYOR’S MESSAGE – DECEMBER 2017

My name is Helena Kirby and last month I was elected Mayor for Golden Plains. I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for placing their confidence in me and electing me to represent and serve the Golden Plains community as Mayor. THANK YOU Cr DES PHELAN I would like to congratulate Cr Phelan on his five terms as Mayor of Golden Plains Shire Council in total, and overall for his contribution to Council and to Golden Plains over many years. On behalf of Council and the community I thank him for his efforts. As some of you may know, I live and work in Rokewood, operating a small business as well as now being on Council. Living in this smaller local community gives me the chance to hear direct from locals about a whole range of issues, including how well or otherwise Council is meeting their expectations. I do not forget that Golden Plains is made up of over 50 of these small communities, which deserve good service just as much as the larger towns. THE YEAR AHEAD 2018 holds many unknowns but we do know that as a Council… •We have a four year Council Plan and strategies in place to meet our objectives •We want to focus on the big picture, we want to be innovative and sustainable •We promise to consult and collaborate more with our community •We will be courageous in our decision making - because we want to provide residents with a wonderful place to live and work With this plan, we will have to work hard as a team - a team with my fellow councillors and as a team with the organisation management - to combat the challenges that no doubt lie ahead – and to make the most of the opportunities that will also arise. GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL LEADERS We bid long-standing CEO Rod Nicholls farewell as he retires this month after 23 years as CEO of our organisation and 47 years in the service of local government. His has been a long and distinguished career and we wish him all the very best for his retirement. And on that note we are very pleased to have appointed Eric Braslis as our new CEO. He brings enthusiasm and experience to the role and we look forward to working with him. Cr Helena Kirby Mayor – Golden Plains Shire Council
