WIPM REPORT
SEPTEMBER 2022 EDITION

Hello everyone, and welcome to our September 2022 newsletter. I can’t believe we are in September already! Where has the year gone? As the weather starts warming up, I am sure business will be increasing now as well, which we can all appreciate.
It has been another big month for WIPM. We have been busy finalising our brand-new website and planning some very exciting events coming up in the next year.
We are pleased to announce that WIPM will be hosting the National Leadership Conference. The theme of the conference will be ‘Breaking Barriers’. After great feedback from the previous Leadership Conference, Nicky and the team organised, we are very excited to take the next Leadership Conference to new heights! This conference will offer inspiration, motivation, networking, personal and professional development, and community for women in the pest management industry. The conference will include workshops on goal setting, dressing for success, personal branding, and tapping into your power. If you want to learn how to advance your career as a female, join us on the Gold Coast in March 2023. Keep an eye out over the next coming months for further details.

I am excited to be facilitating this conference as well as the Termite Professional Conference in July 2023, working with Phil Ridley, which will include the WIPM National Big Breakfast and Partners Event in Montville.
I am very grateful to have been presented with the opportunity to assist in organising these events for the benefit of the industry.
Our brand-new WIPM website is in the final stages of development and will be launched very soon. On our website, expect to find information regarding upcoming events, careers, our newsletters and some pretty cool merchandise.
Our Friday night Meet and Greet events have been very successful. We will continue to run these events as often as possible. These events we run via zoom, where we come together to meet new members and catch up with often a drink or two!
Nicky will be heading over to Fiji in October to meet with our South Pacific WIPM representative Asita Devi Deo and they will be filming a documentary titled ‘Wisdom of the Geese’, related to women in pest management. We look forward to catching up with Nicky when she is back!

WHY YOU NEED EFFECTIVE BUSINESS SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES
Business systems and processes that are tailored to your unique operation is something you need to put time, energy and focus into. Getting this area of your business right is extremely important to get things running in an organised, consistent and easily repeatable way.
When followed correctly by everyone on your payroll, executing the business’s day to day tasks via standardised ways of doing things can significantly reduce the mistakes made by the team and speed up the completion of activities.
Which sounds like a great way to save money and a lot of frustration, right? It’s also a great way to safeguard your business from an insurance claim made because something wasn’t done correctly.

If matched with intelligent customer service strategies and the right training, the overall effect on your enterprise can be eye-opening. You’ll wonder what you ever did without a range of clever, usually digitalised, solutions to help you manage your workflows.
Lead generation, payroll, operations, inventory and workforce management are all examples of systems that may run in a pest control business. Here’s a look at what systems and processes are and how to use them effectively.
WHAT ARE BUSINESS PROCESSES?
Systems and processes are two different things and both are important to your business.
A process is a set of steps that you apply to ensure you/your team successfully complete any business activity that needs to be done more than once. For instance, you would have a process you follow for applying an effective termite management plan to a building. This may include conducting an initial inspection, identifying any visible evidence of pests, analysing why the pest is in that environment, writing up a pest identification and treatment plan, discussing it with the customer, selecting and applying the pest control treatment, taking preventative action in other ways, then undertaking regular inspections of the premises (and additional treatments if need be) after the initial treatment has been completed.
Processes allow you to improve the effectiveness of your business through a reliable sequence of steps. Within those steps will be smaller workflows that ensure each step of the process is executed efficiently and effectively. For instance, inspecting a property will involve certain actions that must be done in sequence to get the best outcome you’re seeking. You’ll want a clear process in place to make sure each task is always done in the same way, no matter who does it.
As mentioned, this also helps you avoid paying out in the instance of someone making a termite management insurance claim or other insurance claim against your business. If you’ve ticked all the boxes in your finely-honed process you’ll ensure each step is carried out as per best practice, potentially reducing your risk of missing something.

WHAT ARE BUSINESS SYSTEMS?
A system is a set of processes, people, technologies and interfaces put together to complete a business activity.
For example, consider an online job booking system… What that system likely does when it moves into action is ask which technologies this process needs to work, which people need to be involved, what processes need to be put in play, and so on. It will also prescribe how this part of the business will interact with other parts of the business. For instance, how will your bookings process speak to your staff roster?
Systems are there to improve the efficiency of a business, by tying together different processes and other business elements to ensure everything is well-connected. An intelligent system that puts into play all the key factors needed for a strong outcome means a better business performance.
If something in the business isn’t being done fast enough, there are errors, or something else is falling through the cracks, you need to delve into the system involved. Look through the interfaces between all your processes and find what’s missing.
WHY ARE BUSINESS SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES IMPORTANT?
Why is it so important to have well thought-out systems and processes in your business?
GROWTH
If business systems and processes are running efficiently in your business, you can effectively step away from it without things falling apart. Spending more time working on your business rather than in it allows for growth in so many ways. As a business owner, it frees up your time and energy to focus on more high value tasks such as strategic thinking and innovation.
STAFF RETENTION
When your team has a clear understanding of what’s expected of them at each point in their daily activities, they’re more likely to perform well. They have a much better grasp of what they need to do, when, and of where others team members fit. Plus, you’ll see better staff retention. Job satisfaction is higher when there are effective business systems and processes in play.
TRAINING
Having clear systems and processes – especially when documented – also makes it easier to teach new staff coming into the business. They much more easily understand what you expect of the team, what their individual role entails and how
their actions affect others and the business.
BUSINESS SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES AS A COMPANY ASSET
You’re also creating a valuable asset for your business. If you ever want to sell, you’ll be able to boast about the existing infrastructure of systems and processes that a newcomer can easily plug into. You’re making it much easier for a new owner and their team to hit the ground running.
BETTER BUSINESS BREEDS CONFIDENCE
Having better control of your business breeds confidence within you. Instead of scrambling to put fires out regularly, you’ll see your business running more efficiently. You’ll also be able to spot and manage problems much earlier. When you don’t have to constantly manage and control every business move, you can play more of an overseeing rule.
Then there’s customer confidence – a well run business produces better results for its customers. If they had to choose between the services of a business that runs things in a haphazard manner or one that’s professional in its approach to business systems and processes, which do you think they’d choose?
INSURANCE FOR THINGS YOU CAN’T PLAN FOR

EMPLOYER TIPS
BECOME AN EMPLOYER OF CHOICE

The pest industry is crying out for more workers with the country in the middle of one of its largest ever labour shortages. While there is a high demand for workers, pest businesses are struggling to fill those vacancies. Most of these businesses attributed their struggles to applicants not having the required skills and a lack of applicants. The inability to find workers is also not pest control-specific, with the shortage affecting every industry.
Employers in the pest industry are finding themselves paying more to attract workers. But is this the solution? Being an employer of choice has never just been about salary and terms, but that’s not to say that these aren’t important considerations. These are just a few tips to help you become an employer of choice.

OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH.
Encourage your employees to continue to develop their skills and careers. Offer performance development planning, keep up with internal and external training opportunities and stretch assignments to help employees expand their skills. A great example of this is to give your technicians the opportunity to attend the upcoming Termite Professional Conference that will be held in July 2023. Unlike large National Conferences, which are more suited for those much larger businesses and employers, your technicians will benefit more from the speakers and training which is termite specific.

LARGE INVOLVEMENT IN THE BUSINESS DECISIONS.
Businesses with a strong employer brand make employees feel as if they can be involved. Allow them to make suggestions, think up new service innovations, trial new products and attend appropriate meetings and have input on work processes that affect their jobs. This is still very important for small businesses that only have a small team.
JOB SECURITY.
Employees need to know that their employer is financially sound. Having the freedom of concern about losing their jobs, employees can concentrate on their goals and core functions without worry.
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION
Provide regular feedback to employees about their performance, growth prospects, accomplishments, and areas needing improvement. The most powerful form of employee feedback is employee recognition.
WORKPLACE CULTURE
Workplace culture is the overall character of your business. Prioritize the well-being of employees, offer support at all levels within your business and have policies in place that encourage respect, trust, empathy, and support. Examples of this are:

• Treat employees as friends, caring for them, and being interested in their wellbeing.
• Forgiving mistakes and not assigning blame.
• Working to inspire each other.
• Prioritize trust, respect, gratitude, and integrity.
Positive social connections at work are crucial for the health of your employees. They tend to have fewer illnesses, quicker recovery from injuries, are less likely to experience depression, better cognitive functions, and overall better job performance.
An employer or manager who is willing to go above and beyond can create a strong dynamic with their team. There is nothing in this article that none of us hasn’t heard before, but it is always good to get a reminder on how to create a positive work culture, making you an employer of choice.
PESTIE CONNECTIONS

“Welcome to Pestie Connections. Power of the pack. Women who support women are more successful. Raising each other up and channelling the power of collaboration is truly how we’ll change the equation - and have a lot more fun along the way. Pestie Connections is a way to amplify other women in the pest management industry. I call it the Shine Theory, which is the idea that when you help other women rise, we all shine. Build each other up! This month I got the opportunity to interview Sandra Speirs and Amanda Robin, both very inspiring women who have been in the industry for 35 years between them. I also made time to hit the road and spent some time with Kirrily Henry from Termitrust Dubbo and met her family, who kindly let me video the meeting.”

LAWN LOVE
We all have that little bit of lawn we want to look luscious all year round. It could be that path out the front of the stables, the back yard with the trampoline, that little ‘special snack paddock or you could even dream of a beautiful green arena. But getting that lawn to look healthy can be hard, particularly in those high-traffic areas.
But where to start – there is so much information and products on the market that the whole thing can seem overwhelming. So, I thought I would write this article to give you a bit of lawn insight so you can have that beautiful green lawn you have been dreaming of.
Your lawn only needs three things to look good and healthy – frequent mowing, 10mm of water a few times a week and a good fertiliser and wetter plan.
CUTTING YOUR LAWN
The more your lawn is mowed, the healthier it will be. Really – you can’t mow too much as long as you don’t go too low. You really want to take off the tip of the leaf regularly, which encourages growth. If you do mow and the lawn yellows off, it means you have mowed a little short. But don’t be discouraged – stay with the plan, and it will come back nicely.

WATER, WATER, WATER
Like with all plants – water is especially important in keeping your lawn on point. You could be doing everything right, but if you are not getting enough water onto the lawn, it will take longer to recover from damage. It also leaves it more vulnerable to weeds and pests taking up home. This doesn’t mean you have to water every day and need to send yourself bankrupt in the process. The key is making sure the lawn is watered regularly with

a spread of 10mm. Check your sprinklers regularly and use catch cups (easily found online or in gardening stores) placed around the lawn to check that the lawn is getting the required amounts. If you have a solid reticulation system with pop-up sprinklers you should only need to be running your sprinklers for about 15 minutes to achieve the right amount of watering. The magical time to have the sprinklers turn on is as the sun is rising – this will help with evaporation and give your lawn a great start to the day.
FEEDING YOUR LAWN
Applying a granular fertilizer to your lawn every three months will bring it to life. You should be aware that, like with most things, you get what you pay for. We would also recommend investing in a hand spreader so that you get the even spread over the lawn. The most important thing to remember is to water it in, at least 6mm of water should be applied after fertilization and no mowing for 24 hours.
A soil wetter should also be applied during the water months. This is particularly important with hydrophobic soils like the sandy soil we have here in WA. If you have a patchy lawn despite mowing, watering, and fertilizing, you may need to think about applying a wetting agent. Wetting agents attract the water into the soil and improves the water runoff – meaning your lawn will grow deeper roots. By improving the soil, you will be saving water and ensuring it gets to wherever it is needed.
Most importantly, though, you should ENJOY your lawn. A good lawn is supposed to be used, not just admired from a distance. Don’t be afraid to put the trampoline on the back lawn – just move it regularly. With a little bit of maintenance, it won’t be long before your lawn looks like the MCG.
