WINNERS OF THE WIPM RECOGNITION AWARDS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON FRIDAY THE 7TH JULY

AMANDA ROBIN

COMPETITIVE PEST SERVICES (CPS)

QLD GENERAL MANAGER

Amanda’s journey in the pest industry began in 2023 with Rentokil, where she worked as a Hygiene’s Sales Consultant for a decade. However, when Rentokil merged the three business together, Amanda’s role shifted towards pest control. The merger brought about a significant change in Amanda’s work environment as she transitioned from an all-female team to an allmale team.

Competitive Pest Services (CPS), a Sydney based company with a team of approximately 40 employees across Australia, lacked a significant presence in Queensland (Qld), with only one technician operating in the area. However, this changed when Amanda moves over from Rentokil and was appointed as General Manager in Qld for CPS about a year ago. With CPS expanding nationally, Amanda has been assisting others in the Business Development Team (BDM) team. Since Amanda took on the role of General Manager in Qld, the team has grown to include its own BDM, an additional technician, and plans to expand by hiring more BDM’s in other states. Amanda’s contribution has resulted in a remarkable 37% increase in growth for CPS.

Amanda’s daily routine is never the same. Although she is located in Queensland, she frequently journeys to Sydney to convene with her team. Amanda’s responsibilities encompass two distinct areas – one involves handling administrative tasks behind the desk, while the other requires her to be out in the field, working alongside either the technicians or the business development manager (BDM). Even though Amanda has been in the pest industry for 20 years, it has only been in the past four years she decided to go for her technician’s licence. Her journey was not without obstacles, as she fell pregnant while studying as well as switching companies, forcing her to reapply. Nevertheless, Amanda persevered and felt an immense sense of accomplishment upon receiving her

licence. Her time in the field has given her a newfound appreciation for the challenges that technicians face while working on the road.

Amanda’s nomination is well-deserved, as she embodies exceptional leadership qualities. Her ability to lead by example and her unwavering passion for fairness and empathy towards her staff are truly remarkable. Amanda’s approach to leadership is rooted in treating others with the same kindness and respect that she expects in return. Her leadership style is a shining example of how to lead with compassion and empathy. Amanda’s passion lies in solving problems and assisting others. Witnessing her colleagues accomplish their objectives and reach their targets brings her immense joy.

2023 FEMALE WOMEN IN PEST MANAGEMENT

MICHELLE JORDAN

MERIDIAN PEST MANAGEMENT OWNER – QUALIFIED TIMBER PEST TECHNICIAN

The judges were taken aback by Michelle Jordan's impressive credentials as a business owner and qualified timber pest inspector. Her story of starting from scratch, all on her own as a woman, was truly inspiring. Despite the odds, Michelle has grown her team to 14 skilled technicians, all of whom are male, operating in both NSW and Melbourne with their headquarters located in Ingleburn.

Michelle has been a part of the pest industry for 27 years, with 17 of those years spent as a qualified technician. After working for a pest company for a decade, Michelle decided to take the leap and start her own pest control business. She believed that if she was going to run her own business, she needed to be fully qualified. What sets Michelle apart is that she doesn't rely on sub-contractors. Instead, all her employees work under Meridian Pest Management, with some having been with her for an impressive 13 years.

Michelle's day is a whirlwind of activity. Her top priority is conducting pest inspections and ensuring that all reports are accurate and current. She also takes on the challenging responsibility of quoting for new builders and managing the daily office operations, including handling all accounting and invoicing tasks. Some may question why she doesn't delegate these duties to someone else, but Michelle learned the hard way when her previous office manager embezzled funds from the company after a decade of service. Determined to prevent a similar situation from occurring again, Michelle took charge of the office management herself and implemented new systems to safeguard the business. Despite the difficulties she's faced, Michelle remains committed to ensuring that her company runs smoothly and efficiently. The team at the office is expanding, with the addition of two female colleagues working alongside Michelle. Furthermore, a new receptionist is set to join the team soon.

Going back when Michelle first started the business, her biggest challenge was being a woman. Her primary work is in pre-construction, and in the past, some builders doubted her expertise. Although men are beginning to recognise that women are also present in the field, it can still be challenging for women to fit into industries such as pest control. Michelle advocates for the empowerment of women in business and firmly believes that having a female-owned and operated company is a key factor in achieving success. She understands that women can better relate to and understand the needs of other women. As a result, there is a growing demand for female technicians in the pest control industry, but unfortunately, they are still a rare find. Michelle is committed to promoting and supporting women in business and hopes to see more women-owned companies thrive in the future.

Michelle's passion for the pest management industry lies in the challenges it presents. She thrives on securing fresh contracts with builders and expanding her clientele. She has established strong relationships with major building companies and a dedicated group of builders. Michelle finds inspiration in two important people in her life - her significant other and his mother. They take immense pride in her accomplishments and never fail to acknowledge her hard work in building a successful business from the ground up. In fact, Michelle's partner is also an integral part of the company.

Michelle's story is one that deserves to be shared and can truly motivate the pest control industry. She has chosen a challenging path in pre-construction, and her determination is truly inspiring. As Michelle herself says, "the more women who enter this field, the better it will be."

STEPHANIE PADDICK

JIM’S TERMITE AND PEST CONTROL, SOUTH AUSTRALIA OWNER AND FRANCHISOR

Stephanie's journey in the pest control industry is nothing short of inspiring. From the moment she embarked on her career in 2011, she displayed a remarkable dedication and drive that set her apart. Her association with Jim's Pest Control proved to be a steppingstone for her success, and right from the outset, Stephanie's achievements were acknowledged and celebrated.

In her first year as a franchisee, Stephanie Paddick’s commitment to exceptional customer service led to her franchise being rated number one in Australia. This accomplishment alone speaks volumes about her work ethic and her innate ability to connect with people. Undeterred by complacency, Stephanie expanded her business by purchasing a second franchise and even brought her husband on board, further strengthening their enterprise. It was no surprise that this second franchise earned the accolade of being rated number two in Australia for customer service.

Stephanie's involvement with BNI showcased her ability to network and build strong relationships within the industry. Within three years, she managed an impressive $200,000 worth of business referrals, demonstrating her skills in generating leads and nurturing fruitful connections. But Stephanie's aspirations didn't stop there. She sought to broaden her expertise and became a qualified Housesafe Inspector for Pre-purchase building and pest inspections.

In 2016, Stephanie's dedication and proficiency led her to become the regional Franchisor in South Australia. Not content with this achievement alone, she also took on the role of regional manager in Sydney and country NSW. Stephanie faced scepticism from some, but she remained undeterred, introducing innovative ideas and methods that aligned with her successful strategies in South Australia. Her efforts resulted in increased performance and productivity across the region. In recognition of her exceptional leadership, Stephanie was entrusted with managing the entire

division of Jim's Pest Control Australia, overseeing 80100 franchisees nationwide.

Despite her demanding responsibilities, Stephanie takes immense pride in training new franchisees, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to become independent business owners. She goes above and beyond to develop their abilities in all aspects of their ventures, from business development to customer service. Stephanie revolutionised the training schedules, ensuring that on-the-job training and course assessments were comprehensive and effective. Even when franchisees moved on to start their own businesses, Stephanie viewed it as a testament to her success in training and mentoring them to thrive and achieve a fulfilling work-life balance.

Stephanie's determination and expertise earned her significant recognition. In 2017, she became the first female Housesafe Certified Inspector, breaking barriers and setting an example for aspiring women in the industry. Additionally, she acquired the regional rights to Jim's Termite & Pest Control in Sydney and Country NSW. Stephanie's influence and mentorship extended to over 70 individuals, helping them become trained and licensed in pest control, with a special focus on empowering female technicians. Her efforts to promote gender diversity in the field included creating a webpage and advertising campaigns to attract more women to the industry.

Stephanie's exceptional contributions were further acknowledged when she was nominated as a finalist for the Professional Women in Australian Pest Management Excellence Award in 2019 and 2021. Her peers and colleagues hold her in high esteem, recognising her as a role model who built her success from the ground up while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Stephanie firmly believes that her accomplishments stem from her dedication to helping others succeed. Her family-oriented attitude translates into seeing her franchisees as her responsibility,

guiding them to independence and allowing them to flourish in their own right.

Even in the face of a global pandemic and its accompanying challenges, Stephanie remained a steadfast pillar of support for her 80 plus, franchises across Australia. Her commitment to their success was unwavering, as she offered mentorship and guidance during the lockdowns and border closures. However, life dealt Stephanie a devastating blow when she lost her husband last year. Despite the profound personal loss, she persevered and continued to run the business with unwavering determination. Stephanie's resilience, hard work, and passion for supporting women and men in the pest industry are a testament to her strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to empowering others.

As Stephanie looks toward the future, she envisions further growth and improvement in her own learning and skill set. Her five-year plan means continuing her involvement with Jim's Termite and Pest Control in both NSW and SA, while remaining grounded in the present, taking it one day at a time. She has relinquished the role of Divisional Manager to focus on providing unwavering support, training, and care to the current 32 franchisees in SA and Sydney & Country NSW, as well as their new trainees.

Although Stephanie acknowledges that her passion may have dimmed slightly in recent times, she remains enthusiast and maintains hope that it will reignite, strong in mind, body, and spirit. She eagerly anticipates

the return of her fervour, driven by a desire to share her vast experience and knowledge wherever it is needed. Stephanie's unwavering determination, resilience, and commitment to supporting others serve as an inspiration to everyone who encounters her story. She embodies the true spirit of leadership and the power of perseverance, reminding us of all that with dedication and an unwavering belief in oneself, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.

NATHALY HAEREN

Nathaly's journey into the pest industry 21 years ago is a comical one. She had been working in the pharmaceutical industry and was simply giving a friend a ride to an interview at Kevin Joyce Pest Management, while still employed elsewhere. However, her friend got cold feet and pushed Nathaly to go in for the interview instead. Surprised but curious, Nathaly decided to give it a shot and ended up landing the job. Not only did it offer better pay, but also better hours. Nathaly's role at Kevin Joyce initially involved sales to help grow the business. She started with just four technicians and within two years, she had successfully expanded the team to fourteen technicians.

Pesty Girls Pest Management is an all-female pest control business operating in the Sydney area. While most pest control companies advertise with images of creepy crawlies, Nathaly Haeren's business stands out with a bold red stiletto on her vehicle. The team consists of four employees and two sub-contractors. Nathaly plays multiple roles in the business, including answering customer calls, handling administrative tasks, and working full-time in the field. While she primarily focuses on commercial work, Nathaly also handles a significant amount of domestic work.

Being a female in a male-dominated industry was a significant challenge, especially when Nathaly first entered the industry over twenty years ago. She often felt that her knowledge and expertise were not taken seriously, and even received threatening phone calls. Additionally, the physical demands of working in the field were challenging, but Nathaly had an advantage. She grew up on a farm and was used to lifting heavy hay bales, which gave her great strength. In fact, you wouldn't want to challenge her to an arm wrestle! Despite her reserved demeanour, don't underestimate her qualifications and the respect she's earned from high-profile individuals in the industry.

Girls

After two years in the business, Nathaly decided to expand her role beyond office administration and started going out on the road. Her initial tasks were quite challenging, but Kevin appreciated her personality and wanted her to continue working in the field. Nathaly's experience in the field broadened her horizons, and she eventually became a fully qualified and skilled technician. She was so dedicated to the business that many people assumed she was the owner. Nathaly continued working with Kevin Joyce until 2009 when she lost a close colleague at the Christmas party. The incident was too much for her, and she decided to start her own pest control business. Thus, Pesty

Pest Management was born.

During the process of setting up Pesty Girls, Nathaly visited Globe Pest Solutions to purchase supplies. While there, she struck up a conversation with Kevin Parsons, who offered her a job at the company. Nathaly agreed to work three days a week, which gave her the opportunity to slowly grow her own business while also learning about the various chemicals and pest control products. Despite working long hours between both Globe and Pesty Girls, Nathaly was determined to succeed. It was not uncommon for her to work for 20 hours straight. Eventually, Nathaly realised that it was time to focus on her own business full-time.

Over the past two decades, Nathaly has dedicated herself to extensive training and work experience. She made sure to attend every conference, both as a visitor and as a trainer, when the CPD point system was in place. She attends every meeting where suppliers introduce new chemicals and systems to gain knowledge and the required certificates. For instance, she has gained expertise in reticulation system installations, bird baiting certificates, and more. Nathaly’s thirst for knowledge is insatiable, and she attends every conference, course, or educational seminar she comes across.

Nathaly’s exceptional performance and positive attitude have been the driving force behind her company's success. Her reputation precedes her,

and she doesn't need to promote or advertise her business as she already has more work than she can handle through word of mouth alone. Nathaly is highly respected by suppliers and manufacturers in the industry, as well as many female technicians who look up to her as a role model. While she currently operates only in the Sydney region, she is in the process of expanding her business further so that she can focus more on working on the business rather than in it.

As a mentor and trainer to new employees, she is dedicated to enhancing both theoretical and practical skills. Her passion for improving knowledge and abilities is contagious, inspiring others to follow suit. She is a staunch supporter of ethical and sustainable practices in the industry, advocating for responsible pest control methods that prioritise the safety of both people and the environment. Over the course of her 20-year career, she has played a pivotal role in helping train new technicians at Tafe, providing them with the guidance and education they need to succeed in the pest industry.

Nathaly is deeply committed to community involvement and giving back to those in need. She offers educational videos and talks about pest control and the products available in the industry, helping to educate the public on the importance of pest control and how to prevent infestations. She also provides free pest control services to organisations such as churches and charities, helping to ensure that those in need have access to safe and effective pest control solutions.

In 2021, Maddi joined Flick as a Customer Care Consultant without any prior experience in pest control. However, she swiftly transformed into a highly knowledgeable team member who could effortlessly identify customers' issues and guide them on how the technician would tackle them, thereby instilling a sense of comfort in them. Maddi's initial goal when entering the pest control industry was simply to secure an office job. Having previously worked in hospitality and retail, she longed for a more predictable work schedule. However, upon landing the position, Maddi was pleasantly surprised by the depth and excitement of the job. She considers herself fortunate to have stumbled upon such a fascinating opportunity.

Maddi's proficiency in the operating system grew exponentially, and she soon became the go-to person for the Rockhampton branch and other local branches when it came to intricate job set-ups, scheduling, and invoice requirements. In fact, the previous month marked a new milestone for Maddi and her team, as they achieved record-breaking results.

Maddi is a driving force behind the inspection-totreatment-to barrier processes and revenue, but she also serves as a central point for all termite-related discussions with customers and staff. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty and has worked alongside technicians in the field, drilling, spraying, inspecting, and treating. This hands-on approach demonstrates her eagerness to learn and provide better, more

relatable information to customers, making it easier for technicians to upsell. In fact, she keeps multiple jars of specimens collected from various sites near her desk, which she's happy to show to anyone interested. However, she's also looking forward to the WIPM Leadership workshops, which boast an impressive line-up of speakers. With so many options to choose from, Maddi is finding it hard to decide which speaker to prioritise.
