CELEBRATING WOMEN IN PEST MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRALIA GETTING TO KNOW YOU - ALEXANDRA BAGENAL WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Alexandra Bagenal.

WHERE DO YOU WORK? Action Termite Solutions Sunshine Coast. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? Business Owner & Technician.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PEST CONTROL? An opportunity was presented to my husband and I about 5 years ago which seemed appealing as an option to grow a business that could promote an early retirement. After jumping on board and getting it up and running (about a month) he decided that he just wasn’t the right fit for him. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity because I had already learnt so much about termites. Excited by the biology and habits of termites combined with my passion for the environment and consumer education I launched into running the business and building my database one client at a time. It started as a side hustle meaning long hours after work at my full-time job and eventuated into my full-time role in February 2022. DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Hard Working, Passionate, Honest.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PEST CONTROL? I love the people I get to meet - especially when they have beautiful vegetable gardens, chickens, and land. I also really love seeing termites at the peak of their feeding cycle then treating them in my own aggregated termite monitoring station.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PEST PEEVE? People that assume my husband is the business owner and pest control technician. WHO INSPIRES YOU? AND WHY? My mum and dad really inspired me. They’ve been my biggest supporters aside from my husband. They are hard-working business owners themselves and have really instilled in me the quality of hard work.

2

WHAT SCRAMBLES YOUR BRAIN EVERY TIME YOU THINK ABOUT IT? Everything scrambles my brain, being a mum of two kids, trying to run a household and a business is enough to keep your brain scrambled for years. WHAT ARE YOU MOST DETERMINED TO ACCOMPLISH? I am really determined to create a really honest business that covers all parts of Queensland, offering the best education for homeowners around termites and things that they can do themselves to prevent them. I also want to offer the complete service - meaning when I find conducive conditions at a property, we can take care of everything, i.e., a plumber that knows about termites, a builder that is all over termites, a gardener that is all over termites. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND A DAY OFF? I love spending a day at home. When life’s busy running a business, it is nice to just spend some time in the garden and catching up around the house with the kids.

HAVE YOU EVER READ A BOOK THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE? When I started my business, my mentor, Brad gave me a book called Ruff Justice. It was a real eye-

FACEBOOK-SQUARE INSTAGRAM-SQUARE LINKEDIN opener, and every time I start doubting myself in any aspect of my business, I always reflect on the book to remind myself why I got into this. To make real and positive change. IF YOU ENDED UP IN JAIL, WHAT WOULD YOU FRIENDS AND FAMILY THINK YOU DID? Killing Termites

😂

IF YOUR LIFE WERE A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE MOVIE BE CALLED? The life of a serial bug killer.

WHAT EMBARRASSING MOMENT HAS STUCK WITH YOU OVER THE YEARS? Not sure, as a blonde, I can assure you, there are plenty of moments.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST FEARS? One of my biggest fears would definitely be failing. I am so passionate about everything that I do that, I often doubt myself. I am also extremely scared about the day that I find a giant python looking at me when I go to get in the roof cavity. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? In five years’, time, I see myself with a larger team working across all of Queensland, hopefully living my best life on a remote property with some cattle, chickens, and lots of veggie gardens as well.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY? I am most proud of the decision that I made in February 2022 to leave my full-time job and jump into my business full-time (12 months earlier than anticipated) I have owned and operated my business for the last five years, but it only started out as a side hustle. When I made the decision to leave my fulltime job and jump into the business full-time, it was the scariest decision of my life, but I am so proud of the way that I handled it, and I could never look back. My business has been one of the hardest challenges of my life but so rewarding in many ways. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I wouldn’t, I am uniquely me.

WHAT'S ONE OF THE MOST FUN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES YOU HAVE? One of my most fun childhood memories is definitely all the experiences of travelling. We have done a lot of travelling around Australia and the world as Kids and it is something that I can’t wait to do with my young family as well. WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH? I don’t have one

WHAT'S THE WILDEST THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE? Flying to New Zealand and back in 24 hours to surprise my best friend for a concert.

WHAT'S YOUR WORST BAD HABIT? Biting my nails when I’m stressed and never sitting down to relax.

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU? I asked my best friend how she would describe me, and this is what she said. Wise beyond her years. Oh, so intelligent. Incredibly strong and resilient. Cares for others even before herself. Loves abundantly without limits. Will give the world to see those who she loves and cares for smile and be happy. An absolutely magnificent mother and wife, although she does not let those roles define her as a person. My beautiful best friend has many talents that not all are aware of. I love my best friend beyond words. Distance means so little, when someone means so much. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE EACH OTHER? Hard-working, bad ass mumprenurs.

WHAT IS A PRODUCT YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Pest Control product? Fipforce Dust & Duster Life in general - my diary.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE INVISIBLE FOR A DAY? Relax at home whilst my husband took care of the kids.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW FEMALE TECHNICIAN COMING INTO THE PEST INDUSTRY? Take everything with a grain of salt. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to show your true colours. Knowledge is the key. WHAT'S THE HARDEST THING YOU FIND BEING A FEMALE PEST TECHNICIAN? Being underestimated.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY OR SECRET TALENTS YOU'D BE WILLING TO SHARE? I used to make wedding cakes!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TEENAGE SELF? You don’t have to go to university to have a successful and enjoyable career. The world needs trades more than ever and females are just as capable at being tradies. 3

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH A WIPM MENTORING PROGRAM In the traditionally male-dominated field of pest management, women have been making significant strides, breaking barriers, and proving their mettle. Recognising the need to further empower these women, Women in Pest Management (WIPM) will be launching a unique mentoring program in 2024, that we have been working on for the past 12 months. This initiative aims to provide women with the necessary tools, resources, and support to excel in this industry. The WIPM mentoring program is designed to foster an environment of growth and learning for women in pest management. It is a platform where experienced professionals share their knowledge and insights with those who are new to the industry or looking to advance their careers. This program is not just about imparting technical skills, but also about instilling confidence, encouraging leadership, and promoting professional development. The mentoring program is structured to match mentors and mentees based on their specific needs and areas of interest. This personalised approach ensures that each participant gets the most out of the program. Mentors are carefully selected based on their experience, expertise, and commitment to supporting women in the industry. They are not just teachers, but role models who inspire their mentees to reach their full potential. One of the key aspects of the WIPM mentoring program is its focus on empowerment. It encourages women to take on leadership roles, make their voices heard, and contribute to decision-making processes. It also addresses the challenges that women face in the industry, such as gender bias and lack of 4

representation, and provides strategies to overcome these obstacles. As we move forward into 2024, it is crucial to continue supporting initiatives like this that empower women and pave the way for a more balanced and inclusive pest management industry. After all, when women succeed, we all succeed. We can't wait to share full details about this program with you in 2024!

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall wellbeing, yet it is often overlooked or stigmatised. This is particularly true in industries like pest management, where the focus is typically on physical health and safety. YOUR BUSINESS’ FIRST IMPRESSION: 10 WAYS TO BUILD AND KEEP A POSITIVE PUBLIC IMAGE As a business, making a stellar first impression is more than just a courteous gesture; it’s a vital component of building trust, credibility, and a loyal customer base. When people have a pest problem or other need with their property, they usually need help fast. So, the first thing they see about your business is very important. It can influence them into deciding whether to hire you or not. Unsure how to build a positive business public image? Read on… In this article, we delve into 10 elements that help to create a strong initial impression in the competitive pest control, building inspection and general property services industries, ensuring that your business stands out as a professional and trustworthy choice for potential customers.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when designing your logo for positive public business image: •

Use simple shapes and colours.

Avoid too much text.

#1 PROFESSIONAL LOGO DESIGN AND BRANDING

A good logo is important for any business, but it’s especially important for services businesses where customers tend to decide on their supplier quickly. Your logo is the first thing people will see, so it needs to make a good impression. It should be memorable, easy to recognise, and relevant to what you do and your business values. 12

Make sure it’s easy to read and understand. Use a symbol that represents you and your values – for example if you’re committed to effective and eco-conscious pest management then showcase through the imagery. Make sure your logo is used consistently across all your materials and in the same way – i.e. your standard colours unless black and white is needed for a particular placement, no distortion or at strange angles, all elements remain in proportion regardless of logo sizing, etc.

#2 COMMUNICATE YOUR BUSINESS’S PUBLIC IMAGE VIA A RESPONSIVE, EASY WEBSITE

Your website is often the first thing people see when they’re looking for a property services company. It’s important to make sure yours is easy to use and succinctly informative. A responsive website means that it’ll look good and be easy to use on any device, whether it’s a computer, tablet, or smartphone. This is important because more and more people are using their mobile devices to browse the internet. Your website should include essential information about your services as well as your contact information. You can also include informative blog posts or articles about pest control or building inspection to show your expertise.

#3 CLEAR AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

When people contact your business, it’s important to communicate clearly and effectively. This means being prompt, professional, and empathetic: •

Here are some tips for creating a responsive and • easy-to-use website: •

Write in clear and concise language.

Use large fonts and high-contrast colours.

Provide a simple navigation menu.

Make sure your website is mobile-friendly.

Respond to inquiries as quickly as possible. Use clear and concise language, and avoid using jargon.

Ask plenty of questions.

Communicate that you understand the customer’s concerns and address them in a way that’s helpful and reassuring.

You can also train your staff on techniques for communicating effectively with your business’s stakeholders, including how to listen actively and provide informative responses to customers. If you don’t have time there are plenty of online resources such as YouTube videos and podcasts that can assist. Even business.gov.au provides a useful guide on this. By communicating well, you can build trust with your customers and show them that you care about their needs. This article on How to Help Customers Prepare for a Pest Control Visit – Before and After Care is a good resource on communicating effectively about your services.

#4 PROMPT RESPONSE TO INQUIRIES HELPS YOUR BUSINESS’S PUBLIC IMAGE

The first point above really does deserve being emphasised. When people contact your business, it’s important to respond to their inquiries quickly. This shows that you’re interested in helping them and that you value their time. It also shows you operate efficiently, which gives the impression you’re well equipped to address their needs effectively. You can use a system to track and manage inquiries to make sure that you respond to all of them in good time. Even if you can’t solve the problem right away, you should acknowledge the inquiry and let the customer know when you’ll be able to follow up. 13

#7 CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND TESTIMONIALS

In today’s world, people often read online reviews before making a decision about a business. If you have positive reviews, be sure to highlight them on your website and social media pages. You can also ask satisfied customers to leave reviews on Google or other review sites. If you have negative reviews, don’t ignore them! Respond to them promptly and professionally. Show that you’re willing to listen to the customer’s concerns and address them. By responding to both positive and negative reviews, you can show potential customers that you’re committed to customer satisfaction. This will help you build trust and attract new business.

#5 PROFESSIONAL UNIFORMS AND VEHICLE SIGNAGE

Check out these customer service strategies for pest controllers for more info on keeping your clients happy. They can be applied to all sorts of businesses.

When you, your pest control or building inspection technicians, cleaning, maintenance or garden services team, or anyone else representing your business arrive at a customer’s property, their appearance should be professional. This means wearing uniforms with your company’s logo, at the least. The vehicles that they use should also be branded with your company’s logo. Be sure to read our article titled How To Set Up Your Pest Control Truck to find out how to create a well-organised, efficient vehicle that will serve you well. This visual consistency gives the impression that you’re a legitimate and trustworthy company. It also makes it easy for customers to identify your technicians when they arrive.

#6 HONESTY AND TRANSPARENCY

#8 TRAINING FOR A POSITIVE BUSINESS PUBLIC IMAGE

To be successful, a service business needs to have well-trained and qualified technicians. This means that the technicians should have the knowledge and skills to do their jobs, according to the standards of today rather than five years ago. They should also be qualified by a recognised training organisation.

It’s important to be honest and transparent with your customers. This means being clear about your pricing and the services you offer. You should avoid hidden fees or language that could confuse or mislead customers. Checklists that denote what a particular service entails will also be helpful. You can highlight the qualifications and experience When customers know exactly what to expect, they’re of your team on your website and in your marketing more likely to trust you and do business with you. materials. This will show potential customers that Transparency builds credibility and shows that you’re you’re a reputable company that uses qualified team a fair and honest company. E-MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2023

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN PEST MANAGEMENT IN CANADA GETTING TO KNOW YOU - RACHEL MENDES WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Rachel Mendes.

WHERE DO YOU WORK? Last Call Pest Control. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? Owner/Operator.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PEST CONTROL? I was beginning my entry exams for mortuary school when I had a terrible injury at work. I decided I needed to reframe my career and took a job at a hygiene/ pest company. I was pleased with the company but bored with hygiene, so I took my exams for pest control in 2012 and the rest is history! DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Empathetic, bold, innovative.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PEST CONTROL? Nothing is ever the same situation twice. There’s always something new and interesting to tackle. I love being able to help people and provide dignity in tough situations. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PEST PEEVE? Armchair experts.

WHO INSPIRES YOU? AND WHY? I can’t think of anyone specific, but women in general. Women in this field, women in other traditionally, male dominated fields. Women in general. Since truly embracing the power of female friendships, I have felt supported, inspired, and respected and I am so grateful for the women that have come into my life over the years. WHAT SCRAMBLES YOUR BRAIN EVERY TIME YOU THINK ABOUT IT? How mirrors work. I just don’t get it LOL.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST DETERMINED TO ACCOMPLISH? I have accomplished so much already it’s still hard to believe I came so far in the matter of four years. I would love to continue the success of Last Call and

18

have my unborn son take over the family business one day. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND A DAY OFF? Sleeping in, sipping delicious, iced coffee, relaxing on the couch with my hubby and our dog. On more adventurous days we like to kayak and take day trips to the beach.

HAVE YOU EVER READ A BOOK THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE? The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. I read it at a pivotal moment of change in my life and it gave me the courage and perspective to shift my thinking. IF YOU ENDED UP IN JAIL, WHAT WOULD YOU FRIENDS AND FAMILY THINK YOU DID? Probably something related to a political counter protest. IF YOUR LIFE WERE A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE MOVIE BE CALLED? Pest Mortem.

WHAT EMBARRASSING MOMENT HAS STUCK WITH YOU OVER THE YEARS? When I squeezed a bottle of chemical so hard it exploded in front of my boss at the time.

FACEBOOK-SQUARE INSTAGRAM-SQUARE LINKEDIN WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST FEARS? Bloodwork and heights.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? Spending my time between work and family, our little guy will be around kindergarten by then.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY? I’m proud I had the courage to leave a situation that wasn’t right for me and starting the beautiful life I have now. It wasn’t easy but every hard moment led me here and I have never been happier at work and at home.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I wish I liked a bigger variety of food. I don’t find eating very enjoyable, but I would like a naturally bigger palate. WHAT'S ONE OF THE MOST FUN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES YOU HAVE? Camping with my parents and my sister during the summer months as kids. Some of my fondest memories were spent on our boat. WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH? Florence Pugh.

WHAT'S THE WILDEST THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE? Oh boy I grew up in the 00s without the internet so some of that will stay in the wild LOL. WHAT'S YOUR WORST BAD HABIT? I leave little piles of mess everywhere I go.

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU? Unique but low key predictable.

WHAT IS A PRODUCT YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? These days it’s Tums hahah.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE INVISIBLE FOR A DAY? I don’t know!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW FEMALE TECHNICIAN COMING INTO THE PEST INDUSTRY? Stick with it! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something without a man. Be tough and confident and there is such a huge network of powerful women to look up to.

WHAT'S THE HARDEST THING YOU FIND BEING A FEMALE PEST TECHNICIAN? I don’t have to deal with major issues working for myself the way I did working for a company, but historically feeling like I was a “trophy tech” or “diversity hire” was very discouraging.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY OR SECRET TALENTS YOU'D BE WILLING TO SHARE? I know the Lord’s Prayer in Latin (learned in grade nine and never forgot it). I can fit my hand all the way to the bottom of a pringles can. I have never eaten steak ever. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TEENAGE SELF? Just get through it, it gets sooo much better!

GETTING TO KNOW YOU - SUZY RAYNER WHAT IS YOUR NAME? Suzy Rayner.

WHERE DO YOU WORK? Valkyrie Pest Solutions in Manitoba Canada WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? President - but still a full-time technician.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PEST CONTROL? I used to be a building manager for a large property management company. My building and my apartment suite went through a bout of bed bugs and German roaches. Through that situation I got to know our dedicated pest control technician who just happened to be a woman. We kept in touch after I left that job. Years later I saw the place where she worked was hiring and well, here I am! DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. I had to ask my youngest for help on this… they said: Cool. Bug. Lady. if I had to decide on 3 words myself, I’d probably say: Stubborn. Weird. Compassionate.

😂

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PEST CONTROL? I love love love that I will never be done learning! I’m

coming up on 10 years in the industry and I’m still learning new things. This is the longest I’ve ever done something and not gotten bored with it!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PEST PEEVE? I’d have to say people giving false information. It’s something I find a lot of people do in this industry. I just hate it when someone says a pesticide will kill spiders but is somehow not going to kill bees. 19

E-MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2023

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN PEST MANAGEMENT IN CANADA WHO INSPIRES YOU? AND WHY? IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SOMEONE IN THE PEST INDUSTRY. My children. They are the kindest and most beautiful people. They inspire me to never quit improving myself. My son is 16 and is a living example that men can be so much more than the role that society boxes then into. He’s caring, responsible and just lives his life according to his own values. I wish I would have been as sure of who I was at 16 like he is. My youngest is 10 and they inspire me for much of the same reasons. This year they came out to us as non-binary - I feel incredibly honoured that they felt safe enough to tell myself and their dad. There’s a lot of anti-trans rhetoric being spread right now and to see a 10-year-old standing true to themselves despite it. It’s the epitome of bravery. WHAT SCRAMBLES YOUR BRAIN EVERY TIME YOU THINK ABOUT IT? Why people don’t want to leave a better world for the future generations. I just don’t get not working towards future generations needing to work less and being able to enjoy the beauty of life more than working.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST DETERMINED TO ACCOMPLISH? I have two main goals in pest control. The first is to attract more women into the industry. The last statistic I saw was that we still only make up 6% of this industry. My company is currently only going to be hiring women, trans people, and non-binary folks to work in the field. I jump at every opportunity to speak at schools about this career! I want to be part of blowing up that 6% into 50+%!!! My second goal is to change the way licensing is done in my Province. Currently we are only required to take an exam and then retake that exam every 5 years. The problem is that that exam hasn’t changed in many years. There are people who have been in this industry for decades who are still doing pest control like when they first started! It’s not conducive to our industry being taken seriously when there’s no requirement for continuous education. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO SPEND A DAY OFF? My favourite way to spend a day off is being outside 20

with my kids, husband, and dogs… and then eat good food! HAVE YOU EVER READ A BOOK THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE? Oh, how can I pick just one!?!? Everything by Gabor Mate is life changing and his work is a big reason why I approach every human being with compassion. When I see someone struggling with addiction or even just someone being absolutely awful - I can’t help but think of what must have been done to them to cause the pain that they’re masking.

IF YOU ENDED UP IN JAIL, WHAT WOULD YOU FRIENDS AND FAMILY THINK YOU DID? They would think I did something that I felt was justified - righting a wrong/protecting someone. My husband literally said to me when I asked him this that it would likely be murder because someone would have had to have done something awful like hurt my children or hurt someone else’s children for me to get myself sent to jail. I’m too much of a rule follower - I only go against the rules when the rules are unjust. IF YOUR LIFE WERE A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE MOVIE BE CALLED? Takin care of business.

WHAT EMBARRASSING MOMENT HAS STUCK WITH YOU OVER THE YEARS? Probably the stupid Facebook posts that come back to haunt me in the “memories” section. Before I went to university, I was a fairly hardcore anti-feminist and a bit of a “pick-me”. It is a good reminder of how much I have grown as a person though. Before university I had a lot of awful views on women, gender roles, racism, and addiction. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST FEARS? The biggest fear I have is for my children’s future. The cost-of-living crisis in Canada is getting worse and worse and the “solutions” put out disproportionately affect low to middle class people. Housing prices are astronomical here. We are a country full of oligopolies and the people running these oligopolies seem to have the government in their pockets. Our grocery

FACEBOOK-SQUARE INSTAGRAM-SQUARE LINKEDIN stores, cell phones, internet providers, airlines are oligopolies in Canada. We pay some of the highest rates in the world for these things. The second biggest fear is climate change. I’ve seen it getting more and more obvious over the last 5 years. It’s disheartening that there are so many people in government who don’t see urgency in acting on it. This summer was awful for wildfires in Canada - I know Australia had similar issues in the last few years too. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? Buying my huge plot of land and starting my family’s little farm/commune. My goal is to purchase 100 acres and build a tiny home for each of my kids and for my husband and I too.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY? I’m proud of my kids first… but I know that I should be proud of myself too. I’ve had a bit of a rough life and somehow here I am! I’ve been homeless a few times in my life - once with a toddler. Escaped an abusive relationship- with said toddler! I’ve struggled with addiction. I guess I’m most proud that through it all I’ve always remembered where I came from. I don’t want to be one of those people who become successful and then look down on people who are just trying to survive. I worked hard when I was poor I’m not working any harder now. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’d like to quit people pleasing. I want to help everyone and sometimes I forget that I need to sleep lol. WHAT'S ONE OF THE MOST FUN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES YOU HAVE? Fishing with my dad. He would set us kids up on shore to cast for fish then he’d put on his snorkel and flippers, and he’d go spear fishing. It was great because if we got one of our lines stuck then Dad would just swim down and get it out.

WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH? I love Tom Hardy, but I equally love Seth Rogen. I’d be a happy happy woman if I could have both lol.

HOW WOULD YOUR BEST FRIEND DESCRIBE YOU? Probably that I’m straightforward and honest.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE EACH OTHER? Rachel is like the best cheerleader to have on your side. She’s a fierce advocate and will always make sure you do what’s best for you. She’s one of my best friends and I’m so incredibly grateful to know her. WHAT IS A PRODUCT YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT? Antiperspirant. Nobody wants to know me without this lol. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE INVISIBLE FOR A DAY? I would lay under a tree and look at the sky and just exist.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A NEW FEMALE TECHNICIAN COMING INTO THE PEST INDUSTRY? It’s ok to embrace your femininity in a female lacking industry. You don’t need to act like the men. You don’t need to be just like a man. Just be yourself!

WHAT'S THE HARDEST THING YOU FIND BEING A FEMALE PEST TECHNICIAN? The longer I do this the less hard it is to be a woman in this industry…but that could be because I work on my own now. I think the “old boys” in the “old boys club” are becoming fewer and fewer - and the hardest thing is always your coworkers and bosses. It can be a bit of a dog-eat-dog work environment. The customers are so impressed by a female technician - people are excited to hire me because I’m a woman! It was my motivation to start my own company. DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY OR SECRET TALENTS YOU'D BE WILLING TO SHARE? I am a soup witch!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TEENAGE SELF? Just enjoy being you. Spend more time discovering yourself and less time caring what other people think.

WHAT'S THE WILDEST THING YOU HAVE EVER DONE? Probably when I told my husband we were going to remortgage our house and put every last penny into this business. WHAT'S YOUR WORST BAD HABIT? I have an insane caffeine addiction. One day someone is going to do an intervention on me I just know it… I’m pretty sure my veins pump coffee.
