PERTAPIS Children’s Home

SHINES-IN-HARMONY AT NAN CHIAU HIGH SCHOOL 6 July 2019 A special Thanks to Nan Chiau High School for inviting our residents to their school carnival. 20 of our children were invited with warm greetings and were brought around to take a look at the booths available. Free coupons were also gifted to each individual. They had a fun filled time going from one station to another spending the given money on food and games. One of the most anticipated stations was the hunted house. Without looking back, the kids rushed and lined up in an orderly manner waiting for their turn to enter. They raced through the dark overcoming all the obstacles and came out feeling satisfied of their accomplishment. Residents returned eager to tell their friends of the exciting experience.

WATER COLOUR ARTWORK 12 & 19 July 2019 Water colour painting has always been an art that is admired by many. Thus, to be able to practice it by hand under the guidance of a professional is a privilege! That was how our residence felt upon hearing about the given opportunity. Artwork after artwork was produced by our kids with a glow of satisfaction displayed in their eyes upon the completion of each product. Each child was given a piece of art as a memento of their own creativity and hard work. Thank you for reaching out to us and for giving our residents an opportunity to exhibit their creativity and artistry.

HALAQAH SESSION 19 July 2019 PCH has managed to invite out local ustaz to hold a short session with the residents. As part of the Asatizah Youth Network team, Ustaz Faritz has managed multiple activities engaging our local youth in various events. In spite of the brief timing, issues were addressed, and many opinions and advises were exchanged in assuring them of the importance of self-respect and self-worth. They were reminded of their responsibility not only as a muslim, but also of their role as a student and a child to their parents. It was a meaningful ‘food-for-the-soul’ session for our teenage residents. Thank you ustaz for your time and hopeful words. Visit us again soon!

OUR HOMELAND 20 July 2019 In conjunction with our 54th National day, ITE East has conducted a pre-national day celebration to remind our kids of the importance of August 9. This is to reflect on the roles they can play and how they wish to celebrate Singapore’s birthday. Residents will appreciate and understand the significance of NDP celebrations as part of cultivating a sense of belonging and emotional rootedness to Singapore. Numerous activities were organised in relation to our country’s culture such as Musical Chair on Singapore’s classic snacks and quizzes. The event ended with a prize giving ceremony in appreciating the children’s effort. Our heartiest thank you goes to Joanne and Nadhirah for managing this successful event!

PULSE! SPORTS FIESTA 2019

LET’S CARNIVAL

In supporting the President’s Challenge 2019, People’s Association has organised PULSE! Sports fiesta to engage youths through street variations of basketball, soccer, netball, Hip Hop and K-Pop dance competitions. The invitation was extended to PCH to be part of the event in hopes of making it a great success. 5 of our residents were eager to be participating in the street netball challenge. Even though it was a competition, the participants were able to befriend one another and make new friends throughout the event. At the end of the day, the main objective was achieved and that is; to work together in contributing back to the community in helping the less fortunate. Thank you President’s Challenge for the invitation!

In alignment with the President’s Charity’s purpose to build a more caring and inclusive society, the main objective of this event would be to bring community together through a wide range of fun and activities. Thus, Adam Road Presbyterian Church organised a carnival which includes activity booth, games, fitness stalls and many more. Our kids were invited to pump up the event by promoting interactions and physical activities amongst members of the community. They returned with smiles and stories to be shared among the residents themselves. A heartfelt gratitude for the invitation and donation of $10 000 goes to the organiser of the event for keeping our kids in your hearts!


HIDAYAH’S WEDDING INVITATION 4 August 2019 Our kids were invited to witness the matrimonial union of one of our dedicated staff Hidayah and her husband. Their long awaited arrival was presented with arrays of scrumptious food spread available for them to devour to their hearts content. With their full tummy, our kids continued with a photo taking session with the bride and groom photographed in a beautiful ambiance to be kept as an eternal memory for both the newly-weds and our kids. Thank you Hidayah for letting our kids be part of your memorable day!

KIDS PLAY LAND 10 August 2019 Our friends from Kaplan Hero Club came down to kick start the Saturday on a good note with the kids by putting up a mini carnival of outdoor activities cum charity drive for PCH. Tents and booths were set up which allows them to hop from one booth to another with a carnival card given at the start of the event. They enjoyed different kinds of

CHILDREN’S INTERACTION WITH HOLY INNOCENTS PRIMARY 30 August 2019 Teachers and Primary 4 students from Holy Innocents Primary paid us a visit as an eort to understand each other for inclusiveness in the community. This initiative is to appreciate that all children have the same aspirations, wants and needs that lands everyone on an equal chance in live irrespective on their backgrounds and circumstances. The day proceeded with the kids sketching outlines of shadows of items to paint and at the same time exercising their creative minds and imaginations to produce and art piece. Snacks were given out upon completion followed by a sharing session among the participants. Hopefully this is the initiatory of an inclusive society.

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY 4 September 2019 As per the name of the event, the objective of the event is to keep our health in check and at the same time allowing their employees to better understand the charities and causes that our organisation support. The afternoon started off with a light indoor games and ice breakers to introduce themselves to our residents, followed by a tea break from McDonald’s sponsored by the volunteers themselves. Our guests then proceeded to join our residents in their weekly Fun Fit program to further fulfil the cause of the day. The exercises paid off when the all of them ended the day with a lighter body and a fresher mind. Thank you CapitaLand for the initiative!

GO SERVE DAY WITH SP 10 September 2019 PCH is beyond thankful to Singapore Poly for their unbeaten enthusiasm in supporting us here. SP once again came down to have an interaction with our residents to promote team bonding and teambuilding spirit. As the tradition of school holidays, it is a time for our children to relax and take a break from school. What better ways to kick start their holiday than to enjoy a fun outdoor activity? Their morning was filled with games and sports conducted by SP, followed by prize giving and scrumptious snacks. Both our kids and SP students ended the day with a photo taking session to be kept as a memory. Thank you Mr Akmar for bringing them in!

MOVIE OUTING WITH SPF 13 September 2019 What a perfect end to a perfect holiday week. Our residents were invited by SPF to watch The Angry Birds 2 movie. This sequel brings out the kid in everyone. Even though it is an animated cartoon movie, the staffs and volunteers seems to enjoy the movie too. Just when you thought it could not get any funnier, it gets you laughing even harder the very next moment. Our kids went on and on about the movie, encouraging all their other peers to catch them too. Our friends from SPF also prepared dinner for our kids to eat upon their return to the home. This is definitely a movie worth watching as it is recommended by the kids! Two thumbs up!

SEA AQUARIUM WITH PUB 12 September 2019 Why bother going overseas when u can get a glimpse of the majestic sea life right here in Singapore? PUB Employee’s Union had brought along our residents to witness the beauty of marine life contained within an aquarium at the SEA Aquarium during the September holiday. Not only were they awed by the magnificent creations, they were also taught about the importance of aquatic life in our eco system. Thus, our children were educated on the importance of saving the earth and their role in doing so. After an informative journey, an excellent lunch buffet was catered for them to devour. $20 was given to each child before their departure. Many thanks to our sponsors, your generosity overwhelm us.

BOLLY AVENGERS 28 September 2019 With an exciting theme and an interesting group names, our residents were geared up to start the day with full of energy. Knowing that our event-makers have lined up variety of activities, they quickly entered the activity area and attentively followed the instructions given. Each child then sat according to their groups named after our Marvel superheroes. The day started with a simple indoor ice breaking game, then proceeded to an outdoor activity. After shedding some sweats, they were surprised with a visit by Bo-Bo-Botak the magician! The day continued with performances by our friends themselves and subsequently topped with a dance performance engaging the children to join in the fun creating a human-train-line while grooving to the beat. The day ended with a prize giving ceremony to all the kids honoring them for their participation and encouraging them to strive and work hard to achieve success. Thanks a million to Project Charity for getting our young ones occupied with awesome activities during the weekend!

PERTAPIS Senior Citizens Fellowship Home

ARTS INSTALLATION TOUR 4 July 2019 Residents of PSCFH were invited to Telok Blangah Crescent for a tour of an arts installation put up by the residents living there. The arts installation consisted of various galleries consisting of art pieces of ageing well and interactive exhibitions that allow residents to experience some of the activities that the Telok Blangah residents engage in. The residents also put up a puppet performance for the residents regarding staying healthy and active in old age. The exhibition ended with a talk regarding using resources that will allow for them to age well.

RACIAL HARMONY DAY CELEBRATION WITH MYFIRSTSKOOL 16 July 2019 MyFirstSkool came to the home to interact and celebrate Racial Harmony Day with the residents. The students prepared singing and dancing performances for the residents. After that, the students taught the residents on how to do some crafts. The residents truly enjoyed the activities and we hope to see the students again soon!

INTERACTION WITH TANGLIN SECONDARY SCHOOL 27 July 2019 Students from Tanglin Secondary School came to the home to do some performances for the residents. Old-school songs from the 1960s era were played. This made the performances more enjoyable as the residents were familiar with the tunes and songs. Not only that, the students also had an activity session where they got to know more about the residents which allowed for the students to learn what it was like as the residents were growing up. The day was ďŹ lled with intergenerational learning and PSCFH would like to thank the students for making the time to come.

INTERACTION WITH HOUGANG SECONDARY SCHOOL

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT MACDONALDS

Students from Hougang Secondary School came to the school to interact and engage the residents in craft activities. The residents learned how to make cards. These cards were made together with the students. Messages from the students to the residents were then written on the cards. Not only that, the talented students even brought their own guitars to do a special performance for the residents. The songs consisted of classic songs that the resident enjoy. Thank You Hougang Secondary School for making the time to come and interact with the residents. We hope to see you again!

PSCFH held a birthday celebration for the residents at Macdonalds, and it was a fun day ďŹ lled with fun games. There were balloons, fun decorations and even attractive prizes prepared. Each person was also given a crown with their names on it. After playing the games, the residents had some burgers and fries. This is surely a treat for the residents! PSCFH would like to wish the residents born in August a Happy Birthday!

INTERACTION WITH KIFAYAH RIDERS

OUTING TO JURONG BIRD PARK

Volunteers from Kifayah Riders visited the residents in the home for a day of an interaction. The volunteers brought food and also goodie bags for the residents. The volunteers engaged the residents in sing-a-long as well as simple games such as pass the parcel. They also managed to cut the birthday cake to celebrate those who were born in September. The day ended with food catered by the volunteers. Thank You Kifayah Riders for taking the time to interact with the residents and we hope you come again!

Residents of PSCFH went on an outing to Jurong Bird Park with volunteers from Global Ehsan Relief. It was a day ďŹ lled with meaningful interactions as they enjoyed the park together. Other than having fun, this outing allowed for the residents to experience inter-generational bonding with the volunteers. The residents managed to watch the bird shows and enjoy having a look at the exhibitions. It was a day ďŹ lled with fun and education. PSCFH would like to thank Global Ehsan Relief for volunteering for the outing. We hope to see you again soon!

PERTAPIS Centre for Women & Girls

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE FAMILY DAY 6 July 2019 On 6th July 2019, our Beautiful People Little Sisters were invited to participate in Beautiful People Family Day 2019. The event with the theme of Summer Fiesta was held at Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre. Our little sisters had an enjoyable time engaging in many fun activities with their family members and Big Sisters. 5 of our little sisters also participated in BP’s Got Talent and had the opportunity to showcase their abilities in singing and dancing! Looking forward to another year of successful collaboration with Beautiful People Mentoring!

PCWG BITES - FRUIT TARTS 16 July 2019 On 16th July 2019, our inhouse girls had another session of PCWG BITES. This week, they were taught the skills on how to prepare short crust pastry as the fruit tarts base. They also learnt many other skills such as kneading, making whip cream toppings as well as assembling of fruits on the tarts. The girls did a good job in making the tarts and they look forward to their next PCWG BITES session!

SUSS STUDY VISIT 30 July 2019 On 30 July 2019, we are glad to be hosting Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) for a Study Visit at Pertapis Centre for Women and Girls (PCWG). The visit was conducted so as to generate an exchange of experience and understanding on the various services that is provided in PCWG as well as the deliberation of PCWG’s latest clinical trauma informed facility – Integrated Living Space (ILS). We are thankful for the ongoing collaboration with Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) and is glad to continue this partnership with them.

“TEATIME TALKS AT MILENNIA INSTITUTE” 31 July 2019 On 31 July 2019, Pertapis Centre for Women and Girls ,Deputy Head, Ms Humayra Md Naser and our Social Work Associate, Ms Sarah Sulaiman were invited to conduct a sharing session with students from Millenia Institute on the overview of residential services as well as the services PCWG provides such as our latest clinical trauma informed facility – Integrated Living Space (ILS).

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE BBQ & BONDING SESSION 3 August 2019 Our Beautiful People Little Sisters were invited to attend a BBQ Party at one of the Mentor’s aka Big Sister Residence. So many fun activities and getting to know each other better were organised. Our girls really enjoyed themselves that day!

SAILING YOUTH AMBASSADORS - JONG RACE 3 August 2019 As part of the Sailing Youth Ambassadors programme, our 5 sailors have participated in a Jong Race Activity at East Coast Park. They also had an enriching session learning about the history of sailing and Jong race in Singapore.

SERVICE LEARNING WITH PSCFH 26 August 2019 15 PCWG residents underwent service learning opportunity at PERTAPIS Senior Citizens Fellowship Home. The shortlisted residents were buddied to aged residents from PSCFH and assisted with pushing their wheelchairs and attending to their lunch. Thank you PSCFH for providing our residents with such enriching experiences and memories!

CNB PREVENTIVE DRUG EDUCATION & FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSION 12 September 2019 On 12 September 2019, we had invited Mr Md Noor from the CNB to conduct a Drug Preventive Education talk to all our beneficiaries. A sharing session by an ex offender have also provided our girls with the insights of life in prison, addiction and her road to recovery. A focus group discussion, facilitated by Mr Idrus Shaaban, another CNB officer was also conducted with our girls who have exhibited high risk in drugs vulnerability.

COMMUNITY MEETING 3RD QUARTER 13 September 2019 PCWG organised our 3rd Quarter Community Meeting on 13 September 2019. We kicked off the sessions with various activities such as Human Foosball, Escape Room and Water Dodgeball. We closed the event by doing an outdoor Movie screening under the Stars. Staffs and residents reported they had lots of fun, fostering their relationships through the many activities planned!

SAILING YOUTH AMBASSADORS - COASTAL PROTECTION EDUCATION & BEACH CLEAN UP 14 September 2019 As part of the Sailing Youth Ambassadors programme, our 5 sailors had participated in the Coastal Protection Education Programme where they had learnt about ways to preserve and protect our coastal areas and also participated in a Beach Clean-Up Activity.


STSPMF APPRECIATION DAY 27 September 2019 16 residents under the HSBC RICE Arts Incubation Dance programme were invited to perform at Straits Times School Pocket Money Appreciation Day. The Event was held at the SPH Auditorium and the Dancers have done an amazing performance with their lair and enthusiasm. Well done girls!

PERTAPIS Halfway House

DRAGON BOAT TRAINING Some of the most dedicated PHH resident rise up early in the morning to head down to Kallang River to train in the effective techniques of rowing Dragon Boating. And we have our own PHH staff certified as a trainer to the resident. This is to prepare themselves for the upcoming Dragon Boat Competition. The team comprising of PHH staffs as well been actively participating to the training. We hope to see the boys do their very best on the very day.

WHEEL CHAIR MAINTANENCE COURSE KAMPUNG SENANG COMMUNITY SERVICE conducted a one-day course for our resident. The resident was assisted and guide on how to identify and select the appropriate tools to maintain a wheel chair. They were assigned to learn different styles and created a kind of unique wheel-chair and instilled a sense of pride the talent within them. Throughout the session, resident have learnt basic and practical skills that worked to furnish a well good wheel-chair.

1 STAR KAYAKING COURSE Kayaking is one of the more exciting sports one can undertake to master the waves of the sea. Within this quarter, a batches of the PHH resident went forth to earn their Star 1 Kayaking course and every single one of them managed to achieve this in their 3 days’ course under People’s Association organisation. Despite the unpredictable weather of hot and sunny, the residents manage to persevere through with PHH Deputy Head who is also a certified Kayaking Instructor. The course marked a joyous occasion where families of the resident sit together on their kayaks and had a memorable day kayaking. Apart from the fun and skills that they learnt, the resident were also roped into mission of PHH in embracing the re-integrative philosophy. At the end of the course, sense of high spirit and camaraderie were enhanced for the year 2019.

GEYLANG INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL CLUB CHEERING SQUAD Geylang International Football Club offer a platform for our resident to cheer their team and support the local Singapore League. Such opportunity allowed our resident to engage in positive activities during their time and brought about an interest in sports. The resident are looking forward for every upcoming matches.

SPIRITUAL OUTING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (S.O.D) 10 residents and 1 staff in-charge went to Yusof Ishak Mosque for Spiritual Outing Development Programme. Topic that been shared is about “Society Desired by Prophet P.B.U.H”. In this talked, the speaker emphasised with 5 components/elements that can be related from the holy months (Ramadan, Syawal and Zulkaedah) as a muslim society that desire by the Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H. The resident had enjoyed the programme and heartful sharings.

WHEEL CHAIR SERVICING PROGRAMME 3, 12, 18 & 23 Sept 2019 3 residents from Pertapis Halfway House came down to Neurofeedback Learning Centre to participate for a Wheelchair Servicing Workshop. In this workshop, they are shown the mechanics of the wheelchair and how to solve common issues the device may have while going about its daily use particularly by the disable and elderly. With this addition to their skillset, the residents feel much more conďŹ dent about themselves.

YELLOW RIBBON PRISON RUN 2019 15 Sept 2019 Once again, Pertapis Halfway house was invited to attend this yearly event at East Coast Park. The 9 residents traversed the course set by the organiser, be it by walking or running, and reminisce the diďŹƒculties they faced as they walked by the walls that once kept them separate from society. At the end of the course, a carnival of sorts awaited them with some showcases reminding them more of the moments during their time in prison. The residents were generally grateful that all that is behind them now as they proceed through their programme. PHH expects they would be part of the event once again next year.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN UP 21 Sept 2019 A group of residents were invited to participate in this noble yearly event held at East Coast Park. PHH residents, young and old, would scour a portion of the beach in search of litter, usually ďŹ nding huge amounts of plastic trash among other things together with other members of the public. After the event, they left the event proud that the trash collected by them was one of the heaviest. PHH look forward to be part of the event again next year.

PERTAPIS Welfare Beneficiaries

INVITATION TO TEATER EKAMATRA - MAT CHAMPION 7 July 2019 TAJ families were given the opportunity to watch a theatre performance at LASELLE, Creative Cube. Organised and invited by Teater Ekamatra, it was a first for most of the beneficiaries. They were bursting out in smiles and laughter throughout the play and had expressed interest in watching more theatrical performances. Thank you Teater Ekamatra! Our beneficiaries certainly enjoyed the event.

HOME CLEANING 31 August 2019 A team of volunteers were involved in the Home Cleaning project where they spring cleaned our beneficiaries’ houses. The event proved to be an eye opener for the youths as they are able to witness the living conditions of the families and learnt to be more grateful in life.

COMMUNITY HAIRCUT 5 September 2019 During the monthly food ration distribution for the recipients in September. Atatcutz made a trip to Pertapis to give a free haircut to our beneďŹ ciaries. In conjunction of the school holidays, many children were able to have a haircut before going to school. Thank you Atatcutz!

SUSS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FAIR 25 September 2019 TAJ was invited to set a booth at for SUSS Community Engagement Fair 2019. This year marks the 4th year TAJ has been collaborating with SUSS. The students are volunteer tutors for the TAJ tuition program held weekly at We Care Community Services. The purpose of the fair, allows for students in their freshman year to select an organisation to volunteer and render their service to as part of the school’s curriculum. We are honoured to have SUSS as our community partner and hope for continued partnership over the years.

EVENTS PERJUMPAAN HARI RAYA WANITA Pertapis Women Wing had the opportunity to organise the annual Pertapis Perjumpaan Hari Raya Wanita. This time, held at Lagun Sari’s Majestic Suite at the Bukit Timah Plaza. Various artists were invited to perform their classic songs, entertaining the guests. The celebrations continued with a scrumptious buffet of traditional malay food and games on stage. Pertapis also presented Certificate of Appreciation to the Wanita in recognition and gratitude for their everlasting support.

QURBAN DISTRIBUTION Approximately 300 TAJ (Tabung Amal Jariah) welfare beneficiaries received 3kg of Qurban meat each during the PERTAPIS Qurban Meat Distribution event. The event, held at Pertapis Halfway House was graced by the presence of Guest of Honour, Dr Maliki Osman, Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who also helped in the distribution of Qurban meat, packed briyani and alms to the beneficiaries. PERTAPIS wishes to thank our donors and volunteers for all the contributions and support in making the event a successful one.

FLAG DAY Our volunteers from various schools, organisations and individuals adopted a tin and were up and about early in the morning, all around Singapore, in a bid to raise funds and collect donations from the public for Pertapis. There were over 800 tin bearers for this year’s ag day and we are thankful for the encouraging support by the public and volunteers!
