http://www.thenews.com.mx MEXICO CITY – President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto announced on Thursday that Francisco Bolívar Zapata will join his transition team as Coordinator of Science and Technology.
The president-elect said that his administration will prioritize the sectors by supporting better public policies and backing more federal funding for science and technology. Peña Nieto received a document from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) titled, “Towards an Agenda on
“Our reality requires that the state take the lead and invest in these fields, gradually incentivizing the sectors and creating tax incentives for more (private) investment,” Peña Nieto said. During Peña Nieto’s presidential campaign he made commitments to strengthen science, technology and innovation, and said that these fields are fundamental for the transformation of Mexico’s reality. Peña Nieto went on to say that he will analyze the proposals in the agenda, presented by UNAM Rector José Narro Robles, and that he would consider the creation of a Secretariat of Science and Technology.
The president-elect pointed out that one of his campaign promises included eliminating bureaucracy to better allocate resources, but assured the public that he would review the proposal. Bolívar Zapata will support his administration as the transition team’s Science and Technology Coordinator, and will help define his administration’s public policies for the sectors. Peña Nieto added that Bolívar Zapata has a significant track record with various institutions and that his contribution to the team will help advance Mexico’s science and technology fields. Bolívar Zapata is an expert on biochemistry and biotechnology, and has been a member of UNESCO and the World Health Organization.
