The collection also has a relaxed feel with a naturally soft colour palette of antique pink, beige and navy & brick red. Most of the collection is made with organic cotton poplin & jersey and new stripes in navy, red & beige are perfect for layering. For a relaxed tailored look, we’ve added drawstring and gathered waists to trousers, skirts & dresses and rolled up hems on trousers & sleeves. New shapes for this season include our first ever organic parka jacket (p.15) and a tailored, hand woven coat (p.27).

Safia Minney & Orla Kiely in conversation about this year’s collaboration.
Safia: People say that if there was more feminine power in politics and business we would have something much more sustainable, much more reflective of who we are and our diversity.
Safia: What inspired your choice of graphics and colours for this collection with People Tree? Grey ‘Birdwatch’ jersey fabric
Orla: The Birds, Alfred Hitchcock’s film, but made much sweeter! I looked at graphic designers from the 50’s and 60’s which have a folky Scandi vintage feel; I enjoy playing with those ideas. Midcentury modern is a source of great inspiration to me – designers like Lucienne Day and Charles and Ray Eames were really breaking the boundries. The wallflower is an Orla Kiely signature motif; it has evolved over time & we love it! The juxtaposition of the red and pink gives a bold, dramatic and feminine statement. These prints are simple and clean – they feel cool, sharp and fresh for summer. Together, we’ve created pieces that you can dress up or down, wear with high heeled sandals or relaxed summer brogues, espadrilles and of course - flip flops.
Orla: Women bring compassionate understanding to both people and planet which is fundamental to building a better world.

Orla: Absolutely! Very strong women can also be very feminine. There are no boundaries anymore.

women wanted clothes that reflected both their femininity and their new found strength, equality and independence. The shift from the 50’s housewife to the powerful women we find today is fascinating to me.
Safia: All your prints for us this season use 100% organic cotton, tell me how this makes you feel; do you think it shows to the fashion industry that fashion can be done with a completely organic supply chain? Orla: We’re creating a better future and a better planet! It is so great to realise that the farmers, who are farming organic cotton, have an opportunity to grow organic crops to eat in between the cotton plants. While they are earning money from their organic cotton they are feeding their families and their villages. I am truly inspired to be part of that story.
Safia: What was happening in mid-century culture and society that you are responding to? Orla: The post-war world wanted change, people were looking for something brave, new, bold and colourful – designers responded. Particularly in textiles and fashion,

Hand Woven with Love The clothing on these pages is lovingly woven by hand by traditional hand weavers in Bangladesh. Hand woven fabrics create not just a beautiful garment, but tell the story of the skilled, rural communities who are able to support their families through Fair Trade. The process begins with winding cotton onto a bobbin, it is then coloured with eco-friendly dyes and the threads are hand woven into cloth on a loom. 7-10 metres of fabric can be hand woven by a skilled artisan in one day. Each garment has a unique texture, making it totally individual to the weaver that created it.

Employing nine times as many people as a machine, hand woven fabric provides more communities with income and the ability for them to care for their families. Also respecting the environment, hand looms don’t use electricity and are carbon neutral, with each loom saving one tonne of CO2 per year. Today there are 5 million child labourers in India alone. Children are often sold into a cheap labour network that promises their families good work opportunities, but the reality for these children is extremely harsh. Each child is trapped by unfair labour practices and unsuitable working conditions. Children’s wages are between
a third and a half of what adults are paid. After working seven days a week, 12 hours a day, a child like the boy in this photo may typically have just $10 left each month after sending money home and paying for living & food expenses. These children continue to be trapped in a cycle of poverty through to adulthood, as they are deprived of any access to education and the love & care of their families.

People Tree works in partnership with TARA Projects in Delhi, India, who support small groups of adult artisans creating beautiful hand crafted
jewellery through Fair Trade. TARA also campaign against child labour, setting up evening classes for deprived and child labourers who have no choice but to work. Supporting more than 1,100 children, TARA provides them with free education, motivating them to continue their education and escape exploitation and poverty.
