SS23 Return to the Land For People Tree’s Spring Summer 23 collection, we look to the garden for inspiration. Being at one with nature and ourselves allows us to find joy in the little things, like growing our own plants, tending to the land or appreciating the beauty of fresh flowers in spring. Return to the Land celebrates the human desire to nurture and to preserve the simple things in life that are dear to us. Arts and Crafts prints and gardeners’ workwear inspire a casual mood that combines utility fabrics with naïve florals and handcrafted details. Pretty and understated, the soft use of the blue palette combined with warm blush tones is perfect for brighter days to come. Staying true to our artisanal roots, hand-woven checks, classic stripes, broderies and delicate embroideries celebrate the skills of our Fair Trade makers. We continue to focus on the importance of sustainable practice, environmentally-conscious design and Fair Trade values. We have designed a collection that’s easy-to-wear with beautiful standout styles, whose versatility makes them perfect for the everyday, special occasions and summer holidays alike.

Spring Our spring collection features transitional styles to take you from the winter months to warmer weather. New for SS23, our patchwork organic denim in natural and undyed twill celebrates our commitment to sustainable practice by saving water and reducing the need for dyes. Our standout olive range features new tailored shapes, while ditsy floral prints, hand-woven fabrics and beautiful ikat designs showcase the skills of our artisan partners. Designs that put a contemporary People Tree twist on gardeners’ workwear, such as the Tessie Jumpsuit, are perfect for layering with our luxuriously soft knits and classic stripes. Familiar favourites such as the Rena Striped Jumpsuit and Cody Jumper have been reimagined in uplifting shades of eco-white and sky blue. Tying in with the collection’s theme of respecting the land, our designs use eco-friendly fibres and sustainable processes.

Sustainable Materials At People Tree, we’re constantly searching for innovative materials and techniques to ensure our styles meet the highest environmental standards. From the fabrics we choose to the finishing touches, we work with amazing artisans around the globe to find the best design solutions. Sustainable Thread – Our SS23 denim is sewn using Eco Verde Recycled Sewing Thread. This thread is made from 100% recycled materials, making it eco-friendly as well as strong and durable. Corozo Buttons – Corozo buttons are a sustainable alternative to plastic and they last just as long. Made from the seeds of the tagua palm tree, corozo buttons are often referred to as “vegetable ivory” because of their smooth hard surface. Coconut Buttons - Coconut buttons are made from the outer shell of the husk. These outer shells are generally a waste by-product of the food industry, therefore repurposing this is not only a sustainable solution but provides further income for local communities. Removable Buttons for Denim - Our dark wash and patchwork denim range features removable buttons, making it easier than ever to recycle or upcycle garments at the end of their life - all you need is a screwdriver to safely remove the buttons. Fabric Hoop/Ties – An innovative approach to adjustable straps, our Mariana Linen Jumpsuit features fabric hoops to loop the straps through, avoiding the use of buttons while helping customers get the perfect fit. Similarly, the Viviana Floral Dress has fabric straps instead of standard for the same purpose.

Organic Cotton Global Organic Textile Stand (GOTS) certified organic cotton is part of our DNA and is the only way to guarantee that cotton has not just been grown organically, but that it’s processed organically too. Organic cotton farming does not use toxic chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers or genetically modified seeds. The cotton farms we use in India are based in rain-fed areas and the farmers use natural composting methods to create healthy soils. You can feel the difference in our super soft sustainable range. Free of toxic chemicals, the hypoallergenic quality of organic cotton makes it not just kind on the environment, but kind on your skin. People Tree is a member of The Organic Trade Board (OTB), which works to communicate the benefits of buying organic. They work in partnership with members, organisations and the government to promote the importance of shopping more sustainably. As part of our role leading their textile taskforce we are launching the first Organic Textile Awareness Week in May 2023, a counterpart to Organic September.

Fair Trade People Tree is a pioneer of Fair Trade fashion. Through close partnerships we work to the highest Fair Trade standards on projects to support our producers. This includes creating opportunities for disadvantaged producers, fair wages, no child or forced labour, gender equity, good working conditions and practical training. We are a Guaranteed Status member of The World Fair Trade Organisation – a global community of like-minded Fair Trade Enterprises. Unique to the fashion industry, our WFTO membership is regularly reviewed and agreed on via the 10 Principles of Fair Trade. We also hold the FAIRTRADE certification, which means products are Fairtrade certified throughout the whole supply chain, from the farm to final production. Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. People Tree continues to strive for the best Fair Trade practices to nurture and protect the core Fair Trade values of the Fair Trade movement.

V&A Collection Celebrating creativity, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance. Our seasonal prestigious collaboration with the V&A continues to seek inspiration from their collection of floral textiles, found in their rich archives. Both of our V&A prints this season are inspired by the ethos and aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and are made by Creative Handicrafts, an organisation which supports women in India by providing employment and fair wages. The fabric is made from organic cotton using methods that have a low impact on the environment. Organic cotton helps to combat climate change and uses less water. Harebell is based on an elegant and gentle pattern designed by C.F.A. Voysey (1857–1941) in 1929, while Merton features an allover pattern originally designed as a wallpaper for Morris & Co. by Kate Faulkner (1841–98) in 1888.

Organic Denim On average, 25 billion gallons of water is used per year to fuel global textile production. At People Tree, we are incredibly proud to work with our Fair Trade producer partner SARP Jeans to help reduce our own water consumption. SARP have been audited by FWF (Fair Wear Foundation) and require that their laundry partners are GOTS certified as part of their commitment to producing sustainable denim. In addition, their employees learn about the impacts of climate change, and environmental issues, so they can work collectively to protect both water and energy. Any dyes and washes used are GOTS certified. They also run a tree planting project in the arid regions of Turkey, and so far have planted more than 1,000 trees. All our denim is made from GOTS certified organic cotton, with Eco Verde sewing thread, to ensure the range is as eco-friendly as possible. New for SS23, we’ve introduced our patchwork range in natural and undyed denim, offering additional benefits by limiting dye and water use. We’ve also brought back familiar favourites from our original blue denim range plus our dark wash styles featuring removable buttons.
