AS A CONSUMER, THE MOTTO OR SLOGAN,

“The customer is always right,” is an idea that most people fully embrace. As a businessperson, the same motto or slogan can cause someone to flinch or wince. The slogan was first introduced in the early 1900s by Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridge’s department store in London. Another business magnate who popularized the saying was César Ritz, the founder of the Ritz Hotel. Ritz changed the saying, but not the meaning, to, “The customer is never wrong.” While everyone knows and understands that the customer is not always right, the idea behind the motto is to encourage employees to make customer satisfaction top priority, and to make the customer feel that they are valued and respected.

In the age of Customer Experience (CX), creating a positive CX is more important than ever, and is often how one business differentiates itself from its competitors. CX is especially important in the retail sector. As with all business principles, it flows from the top. While business owners and managers may embrace “The customer is always right” mentality, it’s paramount that all employees, especially those who have any type of customer contact, embrace the same thinking.

Kathy Dalpes, VP, Customer Advocacy with Zendesk, a help desk software company, posted a blog earlier this year on the five reasons why the customer is always right. The five points in the post by Dalpes are worthwhile sharing with managers and employees up and down the corporate ladder.

While critics of this customer service philosophy contend that it risks enabling rude or entitled customers, the phrase isn’t supposed to be taken so literally. The point isn’t that customers should always get their way, no matter how outrageous their demands are. On the contrary, the phrase is intended to prompt businesses to stop and truly listen to their customers. Here are a few reasons why the phrase is still relevant today, according to Zendesk Customer Experience Trends Report 2023.

Meeting customers’ standards gives you an edge over the competition.

Customers have high standards and are willing to take their business elsewhere if you don’t meet their expectations. Over 60% of

customers say they would switch to a company’s competitor after just one bad customer service experience. Make it more than one bad experience, and that number snowballs to 76%.

Happy customers lead to better retention metrics.

Whether you’re a well-established business or are just starting to scale and grow, wowing customers or personalizing their customer service can boost retention and increase sales among your existing customer base. In fact, 77% of business leaders recognize that deeper personalization leads to increased customer retention, and 66% believe it lowers acquisition costs.

Satisfying your existing customer base can help you attract new customers, too.

For companies that succeed at meeting the needs of their customers, the opportunities for growth are immense. So much so that 80% of business leaders plan to increase their customer service budgets over the next year.

Customer service is also a top consideration for shoppers when choosing companies to buy from, with many buyers shopping with a service-first mindset. Seventy percent of customers say that seamless conversational experiences led them to purchasing more from a company, while 64% will spend more if their issues are resolved on a channel they’re already using.

There is a direct link between happy customers and business performance.

With consumers having more choices than ever before, the way a company treats its customers is not a key differentiation in the eyes of consumers and companies alike. In fact, 60% of customers have purchased something from one brand over another based on the service they expect to receive.

Loyal customers are less likely to churn.

When businesses invest in their customers and make them feel like a priority, they can build customer relationships that will last through difficult times. Sixty percent of customers who often interact with support say that a bad interaction with a business can ruin their day, so it’s crucial for your team to invest in the customer experience.

HOME SWEET HOME

floor, complete with music, drinks, and light bites.

As springtime sweeps across the country, a similar sense of renewal is underfoot as final preparations for the inaugural Casual Market Atlanta are underway at AmericasMart. On July 10-13, the grandest presentation by the largest number of companies devoted to outdoor living will be unveiled, coupled with a roster of special activities that celebrate the new home for casual furnishings and living outside.

Major renovations of Building 1 of AmericasMart over the last year have produced four floors of outstanding permanent showrooms along with one-and-a-half floors of temporary exhibitors that will house more than 130 vendors. Another half-floor of permanent showrooms is under construction for debut in 2024. The result is a sparkling new showcase for the International Casual Furnishings Association, which marks its 65th year of serving the industry in 2023.

As manufacturers planned their new showrooms, many opted to take a larger space to enhance display of their product offerings. Creativity abounds in the form of distinctive architectural elements, set-ups intended to enrich the functionality for buyers and sales representatives reviewing merchandise, plus magnificent visuals on perimeter walls that create a spectacular ambiance.

To celebrate the large gathering of retailers, manufacturers, sales representatives, designers, and industry suppliers—at ICFA, we call them Solution Partners—a variety of activities are planned to facilitate networking and socializing among attendees.

Kicking off the party schedule is the ICFA Birthday Bash, slated on Monday evening from 6 to 8 on the second

Tuesday marks the return of Pink Out, ICFA’s spotlight on the race to find a cure for breast cancer through City of Hope in Southern California. This top research and treatment center is dedicated to preventing and curing cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases, and was selected as ICFA’s philanthropic partner. Market attendees are reminded to pack their favorite pink apparel to help spread awareness and show support for those remembered, plus today’s fighters and survivors. Donations to fund this effort are invited, and participants can receive a pink stone bracelet or hot pink pocket square as a gift for a contribution of $50 or more at the new ICFA Member Lounge on the second floor.

This year’s ICFA Awards Gala is staged at a nearby landmark, the Georgia Aquarium, on Thursday evening from 5:30 to 9. This wonderful event celebrates a variety of achievements and excellence in the casual furnishings industry. The cocktail receptions before and after dinner will be the perfect setting to reconnect with friends and colleagues, as well as applaud the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, the Lillian B. Winchester “Best of Show” award for exceptional product design, Apollo Awards for outstanding singlestore and multi-store retailers, Manufacturer of the Year and Sales Representative of the Year, and the Unsung Hero Award for superior customer service. New among the accolades will be the Dudley K. Flanders Leadership Award for industry ambassadors under the age of 40.

ICFA invites all market attendees to attend the Association’s Annual Meeting Wednesday morning in the 10th Floor Meeting Room from 7:30 to 8:30. A review of the past year’s activities and future plans will be presented. Coffee and continental breakfast will be available at 7 a.m. for an added networking opportunity.

Throughout the week, marketgoers are invited to drop into the amazing, new ICFA Member Lounge near the front escalator on the second floor to learn about the organization, discover the benefits of membership, and min-

gle with industry peers and business colleagues. Program details and earlybird registration for the 2024 ICFA Educational Conference, slated for February 18-21 at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Arizona, will be available. Refreshments and a place to sit and relax for a moment are offered each day!

With all the excitement of launching Casual Market Atlanta, together with beginning new traditions at AmericasMart and accompanied by expanded undertakings by ICFA, there is no better time for newcomers to enjoy the benefits of membership in the Association. From unique business insights to educational forums to exclusive programs that offer bottom-line savings on company operations and health services, ICFA members enjoy a sense of community where they can meet new people and learn ways to grow personally and professionally.

Our mobile app is a live source of important industry information along with online peer chat forums for members to seek advice and explore solutions to difficult situations. For more information, visit www.icfanet.org/ why-join-icfa for a list of benefits prioritized by current members as well as application forms.

Indeed, the ICFA mission is to help members build stronger businesses and enjoy the camaraderie with others who love the outdoor furnishings industry. And when you join the ICFA, you don’t belong to it alone—it belongs to you. You are invited to attend semi-annual membership meetings and planning workshops that identify new ways to advance your company’s success.

I want to congratulate all of the companies that have established their new home at AmericasMart and welcome all of the buyers who will no doubt be inspired by the astounding array of bestselling outdoor furnishings and marvelous new products for 2024. I also welcome the opportunity to tell you more about ICFA and hope that you will call me at 336-881-1016 or send a message to jackie@icfanet.org.

Frankford Umbrellas Marks 125th Anniversary

Frankford Umbrellas, one of the leading providers of superior-quality shade solutions for the contract and retail industries, celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. The company’s history is as colorful as the high-quality umbrellas it has long been known for.

In 1898, two ambitious young brothers, Samuel and Benjamin Frankford, made their way to the United States from Austria and started a door-to-door umbrella repair service. By 1908, the brothers were ready to make their own umbrellas, so they bought out their umbrella parts supplier and opened a showroom and workshop. But after 10 years in business, the brothers had an argument that culminated in a split, with Benjamin leaving the company. Samuel managed the business on his own until 1930, when his sons, Martin and Isadore Frankford, joined him and officially named the company Frankford Umbrellas.

Over the next 15 years, Frankford manufactured and repaired all types of umbrellas. They even made fancy umbrellas for the famous “Mummers” New Year’s Day parades in Philadelphia. As the company evolved, rain umbrellas became only a small part of the business, with increased growth in patio and beach umbrella sales. By the time Martin Frankford returned from World War II in 1945, the brothers began manufacturing larger umbrellas for private swim clubs, country clubs, and resorts. By 1949, the company grew even more

with the purchase of Baker Umbrella.

During the 1960s, Frankford moved to supplying beach clubs and apartment complexes. Over the next three decades, Frankford continued to be the premier supplier of classic beach umbrellas. In 1995, Marc Kaufer, nephew of Isadore Frankford, began working at Frankford Umbrellas. Just like his father had taught him, Isadore instilled in young Marc the importance of putting customers first.

Eight years later, Marc completed the purchase of Frankford Umbrellas. Shortly before “Uncle Izzy” retired after making umbrellas for 75 years, he gave Marc a special copper coin that had been given to him by Mr. Baker, who had received it in recognition of being the best worker at the W.A. Drown & Co., which was the largest umbrella factory in the United States in the 19th century. Today, this coin is displayed at

the Frankford headquarters.

Frankford Umbrellas successfully navigated the troubled economy due to the recession in 2008, moving to New Jersey in 2010 for larger warehouse space and proximity to major highways. In 2022, after experiencing more than a 400% increase in growth between 2010 and 2020, a second warehouse was opened to increase capacity, fulfillment, and logistics to meet the surge in demand for highquality umbrellas.

“I am truly humbled by the success that we’ve experienced, especially over the last several years,” Marc says. “We’ve had the good fortune to welcome so many new faces to the Frankford family and expand business with many of our existing customers. Our first priority is helping those customers grow their own businesses, so we made significant investment in our infrastructure to

ensure we meet that commitment. We know that our success is directly tied to the success of our customers … something we never take for granted.”

After many years in Chicago, Frankford this year opened its first permanent showroom in AmericasMart, one of the largest wholesale trade centers in the world, located in downtown Atlanta.

“When I look back on the history of this company, and reflect on my part in that history, I realize the importance of legacy,” Marc says. “If my legacy is to make umbrellas and provide a little comfort and enjoyment in people’s lives, I think there are worse ways you could spend your day.”

Modern Flames’ New Electric Fireplace Technology Makes European Debut

Modern Flames, the leading innovator in electric fireplace design and technology in the U.S., showcased its newly patented Heliovision flame technology at World of Fireplaces in Leipzig, Germany, in April.

Modern Flames has partnered with the Netherlandsbased Wanders Fires and Stoves to introduce the Orion Series virtual electric fireplaces, with new 3D technology, for the first time in Europe.

“Modern Flames Europe was established in 2016, and our new partnership with Wanders Fires and Stoves will help further establish Modern Flames as a leading fireplace brand in the European market,” says Kris Richardson, president of Modern Flames and its parent company, RPG Brands.

Modern Flames, which pioneered the modern linear electric fireplace throughout North America in 2008, is again revolutionizing the industry with its Heliovision patented flame technology. “Our engineers have figured out the way to bridge the gap between gas and electric fireplaces.”

The latest innovation creates an effect unmatched by any other on the market, thanks to an LCD flame display, lit ember bed, hand-painted log set, and downlighting to create a fully immersive fireplace.

The Orion Series allows for 12 different installation configurations right out of the box. It is available in two versions (the Orion Multi and the Orion Slim), has five different sizes (starting at 52” as large as 120”), three flame styles, six flame colors, and three flame speeds. The

Orion also has speakers installed, so consumers can hear the sound of crackling logs. Users can control their settings through a capacitive touch manual control panel, aluminum body remote control, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth app with Alexa and Google Voice capabilities.

“The Orion Series provides an entirely new platform that combines sustainable style and smart technology,” Richardson says. “We’re proud to be leading the way with electric fireplaces globally and will continue to blaze the trail in new electric fireplace technologies.”

Annapolis is the first in a series of next generation retail stores expanding across the U.S. over the next few years. Formerly known as Summer Classics Home, these new stores feature separate entries for Summer Classics (timeless luxury outdoor furniture) and Gabby (inspiring and eclectic indoor furniture). Additionally, clients will find treasures in homeware and accessories, as well as Wendy Jane performance fabrics and soft furnishings.

The new store’s design and shopping experience are based on client feedback from the company’s 36-year history in wholesale, contract, and retail furniture sales.

“We have 19 locations throughout the country and have learned from our extensive research that more people want to find Gabby and Summer Classics in their hometowns. We asked, we listened, we developed, and now we’re giving

guests more of what they love,” says William White, CEO of Gabriella White LLC. “We felt that Annapolis— with its sophistication, heritage, and regular influx of visitors—was the perfect location to test our new concept designed in partnership with Gensler.”

The goal of the store is to inspire guests to build their home sanctuary by offering carefully designed and thoughtfully curated displays that are refreshed regularly. The look is timeless, and the store is light, bright, and open so shoppers can walk seamlessly between Gabby’s interiors and Summer Classics’ outdoor furniture. The welcoming staff are all knowledgeable about design and space planning as well as offering gracious hospitality. Creating comfort, warmth, and authenticity are at the heart of Southern hospitality where the brands are rooted.

The latest outdoor furniture designs have customers and specialty retailers talking.

Supply chain issues have dominated the manufacturing world in recent years, and outdoor furniture makers have felt the pain in various ways. Higher raw material costs and a lack of available fabrics have often made it difficult to meet high demand.

Todd Wingrove, vice president of sales at Agio, USA, freely acknowledges these challenges, but his optimism is on the rise. “Availability of containers is no longer an issue,” he says, “and sourcing raw materials has leveled out. Our factories are at full capacity and we are bullish.”

On the occasionally unpredictable design side, bold is in. “Color is back in a big way,” says Jessie Flanders, CEO & creative director at Lloyd Flanders. “Bolder fabrics and eye-catching finishes that used to be prioritized mainly by designers are in hot demand from retailers and driving the bulk of our special-order business. A lot of retailers are putting more color on their floor.”

Finally, environmentally friendly furniture may not be top of mind for everyone, but dealers would be wise to include specific sustainable alternatives, particularly for certain demographics. “Sustainability is becoming

increasingly important for consumers, especially younger market segments,” says Joanna Leung, chief strategy & innovation officer at Ratana International.

With that in mind, Ratana International supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, primarily by using recyclable materials like aluminum frames, resin, Durarope, and Durastrap in their furniture, in addition to recycled aluminum for frames.

The goal for any sales floor should be to show off options that appeal to a wide range of design preferences and environmental sensibilities. The 11 companies in this issue’s spotlight fit the bill with a remarkable array of new furniture offerings that form the heart of any outdoor setting.

EMUAMERICAS

Many products from emuamericas (Wheat Ridge, Colorado) combine the comfort and visual appeal of indoor furniture with durability and performance to withstand the outdoor elements. Katrina Triska, executive manager, calls it “the perfect marriage of beauty and brawn.”

The Twins collection is a prime example, consisting of two identical

versions: one made of teak; the other a mix of teak and aluminum.

The blend comes courtesy of Sebastian Herkner’s vision and EMU’s structural know-how.

Coupole is another collection that Triska describes as a contemporary reinterpretation of a classic bestseller, designed and manufactured by EMU in Italy. “The distinctive pattern to its backrest takes its inspiration from the shapes of the Brunelleshi Dome in Italy,” Triska says. “The collection is made up of both chairs and barstools ideal for indoor or outdoor dining settings.”

The steel side chair is stackable to eight and features an e-coated powder finish that withstands the elements and is perfect for indoor or outdoor use. The accompanying steel barstool is stackable to four and features the same durable finish.

The industry-wide trend of mixed materials continues and can be seen in the Twins collection. Specifically, the addition of teak to the metal compo-

nents adds a touch of warmth, which customers want. Dealers looking to get their hands on Twins, Coupole, and other top-notch offerings from emuamericas can rely on a large and in-depth assortment of items in stock.

“These items are ready to ship from our Lebanon, Pennsylvania distribution center,” Triska says. “So when that first day of sunshine is out, dealers will be able to offer a variety of items for immediate delivery to customers.”

AGIO, USA

The Sonata Collection from Agio, USA (Virginia Beach, Virginia) continues to do well with its stylish shaping and porcelain tabletops.

Meanwhile, Agio’s Havana features a cube-friendly sectional that gives customers flexibility by allowing them to choose if they’d like the four quadrants with backs, without, or a combination of two with and two without. Havana is paired with a small-scale firepit that makes the entire sectional usable for a few people lounging or a full group.

Finally, the Dylan Collection is a comprehensive mixed media collection that provides an array of dining and deep seating options in a casually rustic presentation. “We were just touching the surface on applications in outdoor furniture with the develop-

ment of extrusions and using it for tabletops and accent arms,” says Todd Wingrove, vice president of sales. “Since then, the Agio product development team has done some amazing work with molded pieces, bending/tapering to make radiuses, and bringing products to life to provide full dimension.”

About five years ago, Agio introduced Resysta to its outdoor furniture retailers, and it is still going strong. The material has the look and feel of natural wood, but doesn’t fade or splinter like traditional wood.

“Resysta is sustainable and recyclable, developed from raw material that we produce ourselves,” says Todd Wingrove, vice president of sales. “And it’s predominately made from rice husks, sea salt, and mineral oil. Look for some interesting designs and accents, including greater use of Resysta moving forward. In July 2023, we will be unveiling several new concepts, including some unique Resysta material designs and firepits.”

PATIO RENAISSANCE, SUNLORD LEISURE PRODUCTS INC.

The last vestiges of COVID-related supply chain issues are still with the outdoor furniture industry, even in mid-2023. Mark Gorr, sales manager at Patio Renaissance, Sunlord Leisure Products Inc. (Rancho Cucamonga, California) laments that supply chain issues have impacted everyone with lockdowns overseas, as well as in the United States, making it difficult to maintain production schedules at factories.

“Fabric shortages and container shipping costs made the past couple of seasons difficult to plan and maintain a steady product flow for our customers,” he explains. “But with the COVID restrictions now being lifted worldwide, the balance of 2023 and 2024 look to be in a good position to provide on-time and complete shipping for the foreseeable future.”

Many of those shipments will likely include new collections such as Amalfi, Vieques, and Seattle, all three of which are produced with a scratch-resistant photo-engraved finish. “Amalfi and another collection called Tribeca Woven are non-cushion products that are almost maintenance-free,” Gorr says. “All have high quality and a high perceived value story for the retail sales staff.”

Sales staff may also wish to talk about the mission of Patio Renaissance to use recycled materials such as aluminum and HDPE (high density polyethylene). “We don’t hear a lot about sustainability from our dealers,” Gorr says, “but I am very sure our specialty retailers hear it every day on the sales floor from their clientele, especially younger customers shopping around for what fits their lifestyle.”

O.W. LEE

Back in early 2021, the venerable O.W. Lee Co. made headlines when it moved its operations from Southern California to Comfort, Texas. Comfort is about 45 minutes northwest of San Antonio and offers O.W. Lee a variety of favorable conditions. The move made sense for employees and customers, but that doesn’t mean it was an easy

transition—particularly in light of nationwide labor shortages.

“With our move, we have had to create an almost brand-new workforce and find new local suppliers for just about everything, in probably the worst environment to tackle those issues in decades,” says Leisa McCollister, vice president of marketing. “It has been the biggest challenge we have ever faced as a company, but we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel—and it is bright.”

The optimism is well-founded and resides in the company’s top-notch products, such as the new padded sling and its bestselling Monterra collection. “Our padded sling is sleek and comfortable,” McCollister says. “It’s the best-looking padded sling out there. Our Monterra collection is incredibly comfortable as well. We offer more than 120 stock fabrics on both the padded sling and Monterra.”

McCollister keeps an eye on trends and fosters a nimble culture to keep up with changing tastes. These days she is seeing “less cool-toned grays and more taupes and beiges with people continuing to be drawn to ultra-comfortable deep seating and firepits.” As for the shift from dining to seating collections, McCollister agrees that it’s still going, but even stronger than before.

WOODARD FURNITURE & MALLIN FURNITURE

In the woven category at Woodard Furniture & Mallin Furniture (Euless, Texas), the Lorenzo & San Michelle collections continue to do well. Tuoro & Alfredi in the cast group remain vibrant and the new NexTeak polymer teak called Sierra is a sustainable option. Perry Solomon, senior vice president, reports that company officials are expanding the NexTeak product, which is made from recycled materials and is fully recyclable.

Woodard’s iron and aluminum outdoor furniture is handcrafted and assembled in the United States. According to Solomon, more than 50 pairs of hands will craft and test each Woodard prod-

uct before it leaves the factory.

Solomon attributes the success of the Alexa Hampton + Woodard collaboration to a designer-driven ethos that reflects the company’s past and future. “Our customers are generally looking more toward traditional designs, but clean and sophisticated options are also doing well,” Solomon says. “We sell more seating but have not noticed any shift from dining to seating collections. We have accelerated our dining through extension tables, communal tables, and balcony tables.”

Special order has always been a large factor at Woodard Furniture & Mallin Furniture, and now that lead times are becoming more reasonable, Solomon is again encouraging the practice. Supply chain and employee shortages remain a challenge.

“The employee side is improving although it is still an issue,” Solomon says. “The supply side remains an issue as well, although we are stocking more parts for our key collections, reducing SKUs, and communicating shortages to our customers more quickly and effectively.”

RATANA INTERNATIONAL

Officials at Ratana International (Vancouver, British Columbia) recently opened a new flagship showroom at AmericasMart in Atlanta. The 8,000-plus-square-foot space showcases an extensive array of the Canada-based company’s outdoor collections. Ratana’s new Cabo San Lucas collection will soon arrive in Atlanta, showing off a woven resin padded seat, aluminum armrests and legs, and a new tree-bark resin color

with a hand-brushed aluminum finish in Seashell.

“This collection offers a transitional design with comfortable seating and high back support,” says Joanna Leung, chief strategy and innovation officer. “Our top-selling collections include Biltmore, which is fully woven with a Wild Truffle color resin and aluminum platform legs in a Hessonite Garnet heat-transfer finish, and Lucia, which offers a mid-century modern design with extruded aluminum in an Ash Grey hand-brushed finish.”

Ratana’s collections draw inspiration from nature and designers aim to create products that marry inside and outdoor living. “We use the latest innovations and technologies to create timeless collections that are luxurious, comfortable, and able to withstand the elements,” Leung says.

The goals fit in with the trend of customers extending their interior living areas into outdoor spaces. Ratana capitalizes on the trend with traditional to design-focused styles, natural tones, mixed materials, and the ability to combine styles and colors. “We have also noted that fabrics are trending to warm neutral tones,” Leung says, “and we have a wide array of those in our 140-plus in-stock fabric options.”

GENSUN

One of Gensun’s (Rancho Cucamonga, California) new 2023-24 offerings is the Hudson Collection, designed by Achella Design and combining hand-

finished, tactile materials. Jill Trinkley, director of design and marketing, believes the collection will catch on due to its “wide, straight arm and invitingly ample seat cushion” that provides a sense of presence and comfort.

“Hudson has an intricately woven back, with two woven color options, and beautifully finished arm caps, with two wood impression finish options,” Trinkley says. “This provides a visual and textural contrast, as well as a sense of natural warmth to Hudson’s clean lines. With transitional elements to go along with multiple finish options, Hudson can seamlessly integrate into any outdoor space.”

With its familiar designs continuing to do well, Trinkley is seeing a rise in sales for transitional designs, mixed media products, and collections that feature Gensun’s wood impression finish. Last year’s Ventura Collection has capitalized on this trend with a streamlined transitional design and creative use of materials.

The collection features a natural looking synthetic wicker, handwoven onto an extruded aluminum frame and teak-finished aluminum arms that give the warm look of wood without the maintenance. “This collection has done very well because of its low maintenance mixed media,” Trinkley says. “To help expand its growth, we have added a new woven and wood impression finish option for the 2023-24 season.”

SEASIDE CASUAL FURNITURE

New collections are rolling off the manufacturing floor at Seaside Casual Furniture (Coventry, Rhode Island) at a high rate of late. The MIA Collection, for example, is gaining momentum for its flexibility, style, and comfort, along with a modern

and inviting aesthetic.

Kate Carret, CEO and co-owner, says she believes the MIA offers the best of both worlds with sectional and sofa/love seat options in a space-efficient and contemporary design. “Miter joints and hidden hardware offer a seamless look when rearranging.”

While deep seating/lounge collections have been trending for the last five years and are still going strong, Carret has seen increased interest in dining sets, particularly larger ones with seating for eight to 10 guests. “Our longer 90-inch Greenwich Dining Table and 85-inch MAD and expanded offering of 70-inch-

plus tables have seen growth,” she says. “They provide many different styles and characteristics for consumers to choose from.”

Expansion of sustainable choices gains importance each year, particularly for younger buyers—but even customers in the older demographic want a “sustainable” product of a different sort. “Most of our customers purchase our product because they will not have to replace it, and that in itself makes it sustainable,” Carret says. “Add to it that many of our products are made with recycled materials, and are also recyclable, and it’s hard not to see the value.

“An additional attraction is that we offer design-rich collections with a 20year warranty, and we are a company that has been in business delivering award-winning service for more than a century,” Carret adds. “We will be here and stand behind our product should anything fail.”

LLOYD FLANDERS

By now, outdoor furniture retailers know The Visions Collection from Flanders Industries, Inc., d/b/a Lloyd Flanders (Menominee, Michigan).

The made-in-Michigan Lloyd Loom collection has seen a steady increase in sales from 2020 to present, thanks to contemporary styling and deep comfort that consumers want from luxury outdoor furniture.

“It’s available in all 20 of our custom finishes, which makes it easy to style according to a consumer’s tastes,” says Jessie Flanders, CEO and creative director. “For example, our sea glass finish with a soft neutral fabric creates a soft coastal vibe; the ebony finish with a crisp white fabric is perfect for a contemporary, sleek look; or one of our

statement finishes—denim blue, peacock, or terracotta—adds pop to an eclectic or maximalist style.”

The Low Country Collection, and in particular the high back porch rocker, sits within the synthetic wicker group with a wide variety of options from classic cushioned seating to low maintenance cushion-less deep seating. “The high back porch rocker rarely stays in stock on retail floors,” Flanders says. “Offered without a cushion, but with an optional seat pad, the distinctive styling appeals to all markets including retailers, designers, and the contract/hospitality industry.”

Appealing to diverse tastes is made a little easier with the Lloyd Flanders’ Loom Lounge program. Billed as a way for retailers to add pops of eye-catching color to their floors, a Loom Lounge display package includes five Lloyd Loom chairs in any fabric and finish combinations—plus a display stand, a fabric book, and a spool of raw loom material. The display takes up about 90 square feet and showcases multiple collections and frame finishes.

CASTELLE FURNITURE

Top-selling collections at Castelle Furniture (St. Augustine, Florida) are Berkeley, Trento, Prism, and Villa Bianca. Many retailers know these well, but less familiar are the relatively new Korda and Largo, along with sling dining line extensions to the popular Berkeley line.

Rory Rehmert, senior vice president of sales, attributes the enduring appeal of Castelle Furniture to meticulous craftsmanship. “Artisans within the production facility hand craft the designs with unique design elements,” he says. “All of the collections can be finished in a hand-applied brushed or antiqued finish that adds to the luxury look of the line.”

The latest introductions (such as Korda) highlight Castelle’s ability to transform aluminum into original looks and styles. The Korda Collections’ visual centerpiece is a hand-painted decorative cast aluminum back insert that simulates authentic nautical rope, while Largo features textured woven aluminum accents that are hand-brushed to look like authentic weave.

Rehmert believes the rope and weave looks are on-trend, while also acknowledging that tracking trends can be notoriously difficult. “The overall

shifts that we have seen have been to more mid-century designs,” he says. “We have also seen that consumers are more likely to buy better goods as a result of the pandemic. Also during the pandemic, we experienced a shift in the amount of dining being sold. We are now seeing that dining is back in line with historical sales, and consumers are shifting back to seating items.”

TELESCOPE CASUAL FURNITURE INC.

One of the hottest product introductions from Telescope Casual Furniture (Granville, New York) is the 7F50 Propane Patio Heater. The traditional patio heater in a big-box store is typically used only one way—freestanding; not so with the 7F50. “Not only is our 7F50 Propane Patio Heater beautiful, but it’s built with functionality and versatility,” says Kait Warren, vice president of marketing. “There are four ways to incorpo-

rate this item into any collection.”

1) Add this item to an outdoor space as a freestanding item. 2) Add the patio heater to your dining, balcony, or bar height table by installing the burner pole through any Telescope table top umbrella hole. 3) Remove the burner and pole in the warmer weather months and replace it with an umbrella, utilizing the patio heater base as an umbrella base. 4) Install a balcony/bar height adapter and a select table-top on to your patio heater, which converts the patio heater base into a table base, leaving the area around the legs clear.

“Most patio heaters at your local home improvement store come in only a few colors,” Warren says. “Telescope’s is available in our 9 MGP and powdercoated aluminum colors to match furniture, adding a more finished look to an outdoor space design…and by installing the patio heater through your umbrella hole, it’s certain that every

guest at the table will be comfortable.”

Telescope has no minimum order requirements on in-season, net-30 orders, allowing retailers to place special orders at their convenience. “All retail orders, despite their size, carry a 15-year limited warranty—three years commercially,” Warren adds. “Telescope will soon launch its annual ‘early buy’ program for the 2024 season, allowing customers to buy in early at the lowest possible price.”

RETHINKING OBSTACLES

An Atlanta-based hearth retailer confronts challenges head-on and becomes stronger.

North Atlanta Fireplace Grill & Patio (Peachtree Corners, Georgia) has learned the hard way to expect the unexpected. Over the past three years, the popular specialty hearth store has been in three locations—not by choice—yet owner David Esau and his team were able to pivot and rise above the challenges. “While I wouldn’t ever want to go through the experience again, I admit that we are in a better place and are a more unified team because of it,” he says.

Esau purchased North Atlanta Fireplace in 2013. It was his first foray into specialty hearth retail, and it was a natural fit. Since day one, he’s had big plans for the business and worked diligently to create the store of his dreams. He fine-tuned the store’s product mix (migrating from builder-grade to upscale, domestically manufactured hearth products), expanded into outdoor living and built a reputation for service and product knowledge. “We grew our customer base and expanded our position in the market more steadily than I could have ever hoped,” he says.

BUMPS IN THE ROAD

In 2019, North Atlanta Fireplace Grill & Patio’s lease was up for renewal. With business booming, Esau saw it as the perfect opportunity to purchase a building and some land with the intent of eventually expanding the showroom. After months of renovations, the new location was almost ready in October 2020. Excitement was in the air as finishing touches were being made to the showroom.

“We had just piped in the gas for the fireplace displays when everything came to a screeching halt,” Esau says. The county informed him that it was doing a study to possibly widen the road directly in front of the new store—everything went downhill quickly after that. “A short time later, the county confirmed that the store was directly in the path of the road, so they needed to buy us out. We had to find a new location because they had plans to completely demolish the building.”

It was a mind-numbing time for Esau and his staff. They had limited time to find a new building in the right location that was the right size and the

right price, all while trying to run the retail business. “We never even had the chance to set up displays, so we didn’t have one working fireplace.”

For a year and a half, they had no choice but to operate out of the unfinished store. The sales team sold products off brochures, product knowledge, grit, and pure determination. “Despite the upheaval, we never closed our doors—not even for one day,” Esau says. “I give the credit to all the people who were involved at the time.”

The one silver lining was that it happened during the pandemic, so product demand was high from people scrambling to update their homes. “In the middle of it all, we recorded two of our best sales years ever. It was an exhausting odyssey.”

NEW BEGINNINGS

Esau eventually found the perfect store in an affluent area in the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta. “We tripled our showroom space, gained an outside area to showcase outdoor living products, as well as an on-site warehouse,” he says. “We are ecstatic.”

The new store opened in May 2022. Its impressive 13,000-square-foot showroom features 35-40 gas log displays and 20 burning fireplaces from vendors including Ortal, Valor, and Kozy Heat. To take advantage of the extra space, Esau created a large section dedicated to electric fireplaces that include Modern Flames and Amantii.

“With all the regulations hitting our industry, there is no doubt it’s going to be a growth category for us. In terms of technology and product realism, we are seeing quantum leaps right now.” It’s gotten to the point that customers inquire about electric fireplaces daily. “I remember one day eight people came in specifically asking to check out our electric units—and it was a short day.”

Esau is thrilled about the store’s first-ever outdoor showroom for outdoor living products. “We are increasing our focus in this area because it brings in business during the off-season.” Products include outdoor heating, firepits, outdoor kitchens, grills (Hestan, Twin Eagles, and Coyote), as well as furniture (Lloyd Flanders and Wildridge).

North Atlanta Fireplace Grill & Patio is located in a huge metro market with over 6 million people, which has allowed the store to spread its wings. “There’s a lot of competition, but more than enough business to go around. You just have to create a niche.”

Esau credits much of the store’s suc-

cess to its ability to differentiate itself from other retailers. “We have a strong drive to continue finding better and more unique products for our customers. It gives them a reason to seek us out.” He is particular about the manufacturers he deals with, gravitating to those who value that the store has a

knowledgeable sales staff and a professional service organization that makes sure their products are installed and maintained properly.

“We recognize that our biggest challenge for the future is Mr. internet,” Esau says, adding that it’s a pressing concern for the majority of mom-and-pop retailers. In response, he’s recently spent a good deal of time and money investing in a web designer and internet marketing company to boost the store’s online presence—not to sell fireplaces across the country, but rather to make sure that consumers in the local market understand what the store has to offer.

“Our website is a window into our business. People think they want the convenience of the internet but end up realizing what they need is a localized personal touch,” Esau says, adding that hearth products are not inherently inter-

net-friendly purchases. “Customers need consultation to find the right unit, and experts to install and support them through the lifetime of the product.”

Repeat fireplace business is rare on the internet but is alive and well at North Atlanta Fireplace Grill & Patio. “When people are interested in what they see on our website, they’ll contact us and we invite them to visit the store. Once they see the glow and feel the heat of our fireplaces on our showroom floor, they are hooked. Our goal is to give people a reason to go into a store rather than push a button on a computer.”

Esau and his team are very optimistic about the future of the new North Atlanta Fireplace Grill & Patio. Industry veteran Jim Nufer joined the team as operations and sales manager in July to keep the store running smoothly. “It was a huge stretch for us to create a showroom in such a short time period. I think that final chapter is still being written,” Esau says. “When we are able to completely accomplish our vision for the store, North Atlanta Fireplace will be the preeminent fireplace, grill, and patio store in Atlanta.”

BBQ in the HEARTLAND

Customers come from far and wide to shop at this thriving Indiana grill and outdoor living store.

Tucked in the heart of Indiana farmland on a quiet country road, you will find The BBQ Store & More. For more than 32 years, Sam Schmucker and Wilmer Graber, coowners of The BBQ Store & More in New Haven, Indiana, have been keeping their fingers on the proverbial pulse of the grilling and outdoor living industries. They have made a name for their retail business among barbecue and outdoor living aficionados—both near and far.

It was back in 1991 that Schmucker first recognized his passion for “all things BBQ.” While visiting friends in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he was invited to a chicken barbecue event. As he

was enjoying the BBQ, he noticed a grill that he wasn’t aware was even available.

“It was the Meadowcreek BBQ42, a charcoal grill with a sandwichable grate to flip meats with ease. We ended up buying one for our own personal use the same day,” Schmucker says. “We couldn’t begin to believe all the interest this created in our community. So we decided to start offering this grill so others could get the same satisfaction of grilling with the same great end results all the time. Wouldn’t you know, one thing led to another. When we see value in items that are unique or even practical with quality, The BBQ Store offers them to our valued customers.”

Fast forward 32 years and today, The BBQ Store & More is a favorite among grilling aficionados, as well as outdoor enthusiasts who are eager to make the most out of their home’s outdoor living environments. Today, the store features a 4,000-square-foot showroom filled with grills, griddles, smokers, and grilling accessories, a 6,000-square-foot warehouse, and a 4,000-square-foot display of porch and patio products.

The vast array of grill selections includes brands such as Phoenix, Memphis, Twin Eagles, Big Green Egg, Summerset, American Made Grills, Smoking Brothers, Meadowcreek, and Blaze.

“Of all the grills we offer, we would have to say The Big Green Egg is definitely our ‘bestseller,’ although we also have customers shopping for pellet, gas grills, and pizza ovens,” Schmucker says. “The BBQ Store tries to make shopping or purchasing a grill as easy as possible. For instance, let’s say you want to buy a pizza oven, we also have pizza dough, sauce, and salts available to create and grill your own pizzas.” Essentially, anything that a grilling enthusiast could want or need, The BBQ Store offers.

And while grilling products and accessories are the backbone of Schmucker’s business, he and his business partner, Graber, also recognize that the trend of outdoor living—where consumers are creating ultimate outdoor living spaces and experiences at their homes—continues to grow. As such, within the area of outdoor living, the “more” component of The BBQ Store & More name includes such things as outdoor furniture, outdoor structures, firepits, play structures, as well as patio design and installation.

“We decided to offer products to better serve our customers for a complete backyard makeover, hence our store slogan ‘Your Backyard Headquarters,’” Schmucker says. “These products consist of Luxcraft lawn furniture, Country Lane Gazebos, stamped concrete patios, and Star Swing Play Sets. We strive to carry products that are known for quality, comfort, and durability while having a great warranty backing it. To give customers a visual of their back-

yard, we also offer design software creating a 3D rendering of their project, which allows the customers to see their dream before spending any money.”

It is this focus on customer service that has helped The BBQ Store make a name for itself. Customers recognize that there is a level of expertise they receive from Schmucker and his team when shopping for grills, seasonings, or outdoor living products. “We like to think we stand out by being knowledgeable on all of our products,” he says. “With being knowledgeable on all grills, asking a few questions to our

customers lets us direct them into a grill that best suits their needs.”

So how has The BBQ Store continued its strong growth for more than 30 years? Quite simply, wordof-mouth marketing techniques have helped the store experience solid growth throughout its history. The team has strived to create a solid customer experience that is shared among consumers, so people recognize the level of expertise that the staff offers, as well as the high-quality products the store carries.

In addition to word-of-mouth advertising, The BBQ Store team has also embraced traditional marketing techniques as well in an effort to grow the business. “While advertising via social media, direct

mail, radio and etc. is always a challenge tracking ads, it seems to have the best results,” Schmucker says. “We also encourage our customers to sign up in our database where we send out promos and more, even birthday coupons to better reach out to existing and new customers.”

Connecting to their customers in unique ways has also been a beneficial approach to expanding the store’s clientele. For example, each year The BBQ Store & More hosts its annual Eggfest event. As Schmucker explains, this is a culinary event introducing the Big Green Egg—smoking, grilling, baking, and anything in between. “With the correct Eggcessories, anything is possible to achieve on the Big Green Egg.”

Held on the first Saturday in June, The BBQ Store Big Green Egg (BGE) Eggfest features more than 35 BGEs, which are fired up and demonstrated. The 2023 Eggfest will be the 15th annual event for the store. “Most of our chefs have been cooking at our Eggfest for 10+ years,” Schmucker says. “Our Eggfest is all about introducing the BGE and Eggcessories to new and existing customers as well as creating a friendly environment for our local chefs to display their culinary skills.”

In addition to Eggfest, The BBQ Store team strives to connect with customers through the store’s blog, which features a wealth of BBQ recipes that customers have come to enjoy.

As with many retailers across all industries, the BBQ store is getting back to “normal” following the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The biggest challenges for us was definitely through COVID and just getting product in and keeping it stocked in store,” Schmucker says. “As long as everyone continues to enjoy grilling and eating great foods, The BBQ Store will be offering quality products for all your backyard dreams. What excites us for the future is that we are always looking for new products to better serve our customers. Although, we still believe that it is more important to focus on what we do today than what we have planned in the future.”

Small Town Charm

People living along California’s Central Coast enjoy a wonderful quality of life surrounded by beaches, mountains, and first-class wineries. A pleasant Mediterranean climate ensures residents can enjoy an outdoor lifestyle almost every day of the year. Limited commercial development— including a lack of retail stores—translates to less traffic and congestion. It also means there are fewer shopping options for area residents.

It was an untapped market for a high-end casual furnishings store, which led Fernando Martinez and Jonathan Araya to open The Cozy Patio (Arroyo Grande) in 2019. Partners in Chaparral Pavers, a Central Coast company offering complete high-end residential outdoor spaces including driveway, walkway, patio, garden, design & installation, they often felt the beautiful spaces they created were incomplete.

“They would see ill-fitting or cheap casual furniture placed into newly finished patios, which would bring down or distract from the high-quality maga-

zine-worthy landscaping projects they had created,” says Alex Flores, The Cozy Patio’s designer and lead merchandiser. He adds that it was a “no-brainer” to open a brick-and-mortar store to offer complete furnishings and design services.

Flores had been practicing interior design for about a decade before he was approached to help launch The Cozy Patio. He previously worked for a local interior design studio and various furniture retailers primarily in high-end interior residential. He also designed the interior of a nightclub in Los Angeles.

All this experience helped him to sharpen the skills he learned at design school and learn new ones

like merchandising. “The timing to help open and manage a high-end casual furniture store could not have been better for me, as I was looking to diversify my career portfolio,” Flores says.

LEAN AND MEAN

There are benefits and challenges to having no competition within about 50 miles of The Cozy Patio. “The obvious advantage is that when someone Googles ‘patio furniture stores near me,’ we are at the top,” he says. “When we first opened our doors, we realized that a lack of retailers also meant a lack of knowledge by the consumer.”

He explains that as people first begin to shop, they want to establish a baseline on price. Consequently, he adds, “A luxury patio furniture store, like ours, may produce both excitement and dread with sticker shock.”

Furthermore, a scarcity of brick-and-mortar stores also means The Cozy Patio faces even greater competition with online retailers and big-box stores. “This is when we rely on our expertise to educate people on the importance of choosing quality materials and how much more cost effective it is in the long run.” He adds, “There is something quite unique for the consumer to be able to work with a person who is an expert in their field. We don’t just sell furniture; we know furniture and long-term customer satisfaction is our goal.”

The main reason people buy from mass merchants is convenience and cost. To counter this, along with a wealth of knowledge, in-stock options are available as the store’s local warehouse is stocked with many products seen on the floor. “Clients can walk in, see a vignette they like—in designer-crafted color stories and trending options—and go home

41 PATIOANDHEARTHPRODUCTSREPORT.COM

with that very look,” Flores says. “This plays into our strengths as a boutique business.”

More localized customer support is also available to meet a client’s individual needs. It is these benefits that keep The Cozy Patio lean and mean, and the local authority for all things outdoor.

Flores manages the 3,100-square-foot showroom and provides personal design service to clients. To achieve this, he starts by asking customers many questions, including where they live and the orientation of their outdoor spaces. This is especially important living on the Central Coast with its various microclimates. The objective is to pair the right materials for the homeowner’s unique climate and level of commitment to longterm upkeep to help ensure that the product stays looking new longer and ages gracefully over time.

The Cozy Patio represents only the top brands in the industry, including Castelle, Palecek, Summer Classics, and Telescope Casual. Flores notes that people today are more concerned about the substance and sustainability a product offers over the brand name. He adds, “People love a good story, and our top performing brands are the ones that tell a story.”

As a designer, Flores sees certain trends in the outdoor casual market such as sofas with continuous bench cushions and occasional chairs replacing the loveseat, which he believes has become an outdated concept. “A pair of chairs offers more comfort and better visual appeal.” The maximalist design trend in the interiors is

also bleeding into the exteriors with the emergence of overstuffed cloud cushions like the Montecito and Monterey collections from Summer Classics.

In The Cozy Patio’s local demographic, Flores has noticed a shift in taste. An increased demand for transitional style has replaced requests for traditional or rustic farmhouse design. “I like to think we have something to do with that.” He also says people are more willing to explore different finishes. A large influx of transplants moving to the area from major metropolitan markets is further having a direct impact on the uptick in sales of contemporary furnishings.

Chaparral Pavers (ilovetocomehome.com) gives The Cozy Patio the opportunity to offer clients complete design and build services, along with furnishings of any outdoor room or space. This includes intentional paver designs, water conscious plantings, shade and outdoor warming solutions, and even dramatic outdoor lighting. “Clients really appreciate this service because it centralizes the decision-making process within a small, easy-tomanage nucleus. Because Chaparral Pavers offers so many services, we can truly create spectacular spaces.”

MEET AND GREET

Located in the quaint village of Arroyo Grande, which attracts many tourists who enjoy strolling the city’s cafes and small shops, The Cozy Patio receives a lot of walk-in traffic. This is great toward fostering positive public relations with the community and to meet curious visitors.

“We know not everyone is going to be a client, but we can get them excited about us,” Flores says. “It’s this enthusiasm that will make them tell their friends and family about us and generate that great word of mouth.”

Other forms of marketing focus on methods that can be done consistently while targeting a large audience. “Radio has been successful for us to help get the word out and generate interest in broad strokes,” Flores says. Social media has also been a valuable tool to reach a wide local audience with specific messaging such as showcasing new arrivals, announcing sales and promotions, featuring ongoing and finished projects, and even sharing some fun behind-the-scenes content. “Our goal is to keep people excited, and social media is a great way to keep the conversation going even after someone leaves the store.”

With its offering of quality high-end products, expert merchandising, and tailored design service, The Cozy Patio has filled a void on the Central Coast for luxury outdoor products. In fact, the store has been so well received that a second location is opening in the spring in nearby San Luis Obispo.

Flores understands high-end outdoor furniture may not be for everyone. “We do our best to make sure people in our community walk out and at the very least, feel more empowered with knowledge,” he says. “Once people get a feel for our professional recommendations, they gain a sense of empowerment from learning more. It’s at this point that they often see the value in the products and services we provide them.”

Premium Grilling

Dometic Twin Eagles helps customers create luxury outdoor kitchens.

DOMETIC TWIN EAGLES (CERRITOS, CALIFORNIA)

is continuing to build on its legacy of innovation with powerhouse grills that offer performance, style, and convenience. Patio & Hearth Products Report spent some time with Matthew Frey, marketing manager, residential, to get a glimpse into how this visionary company is paving the way for backyard cooking with no limits.

Who is Dometic Twin Eagles?

Frey: Dometic Twin Eagles has been a pioneering leader in the luxury premium barbecue space since 1999. It was founded by Dante Cantal, who was among a small group of forward-thinking engineers in the 1980s who saw the opportunity to apply commercial range technology in a residential setting. The concept took off and a niche industry was born. Since then, Dante has worked closely with a number of engineers in the industry to co-found several more of today’s most prestigious brands. It’s through his passion, insight, and achievements that we’ve been able to build and establish the brand as a respected market leader.

What is the brand’s reputation in the industry?

Frey: If I were to sum it up in two words, it would be engineered performance—that is what really

sets Dometic Twin Eagles apart. Each of our gas grills feature an innovative five-part cooking system that enables people to cook restaurant-quality food at home.

Part one is great airflow coming up through the grates and part two is direct heat that comes off the burners. The third part is the radiant heat that is created by ceramic briquettes layered just below the cooking surface. We also integrated thick plate stainless steel dividers between each burner to offer heat separation for zone grilling, which is the fourth part of our cooking system. The final part is our chef-grade hexagonal grates.

A typical barbecue has round grates, but we found that by flattening the surface with hexagonal grates, we are able to increase food-to-surface contact that results in incredible sear marks. The sheer surface area of our oversized grates also has incredible heat retention. In the end, it’s all about meticulously engineered performance for the purpose of delivering perfect results.

is the introduction of the Dometic Twin Eagles pellet grill. This super premium wood fired grill is in a league of its own. One can effortlessly bake, grill, sear, and rotisserie cook with just the push of a button. It also offers home cooks the ability to monitor the temperature of three different food items at one time, which offers a level of convenience and versatility that has really been welcomed. We consider it to be a great category extension for us. Our pellet grill seeks to meet that discerning customer with something that isn’t available elsewhere on the market.

Another success is our ever-growing line of Delta Heat specialty cooking accessories that includes a teppanyaki, power burner, side burner, and more. Most of our customers invest in a grill and at least two accessory items because it gives them the ability to expand their outdoor cooking capabilities. With our many choices, they can create a personalized outdoor kitchen that they love.

What is your approach to product design?

BOTTOM

BOTTOM RIGHT: C-Series 42 Gas Grill

What has been Dometic Twin Eagles’ biggest success over the past few years?

Frey: There are two things that come to mind. One

Frey: When we design our products, we set high expectations for ourselves in terms of performance and reliability. Our company was founded by an engineer—so that is our core. As a brand, we also

EXTERIORS Circle Reader Service No. 45

strive to keep it real. People want a grill that they don’t have to worry about that will last a lifetime. They want a grill that will grow with them as their passion for outdoor cooking grows.

What products are getting the most buzz for 2023?

Frey: We are really excited about the introduction of our Delta Heat grills with the option of black or white front control panels. Dometic Twin Eagles has a reputation for its classic design profile, so we thought it made sense to amp up our style with classic tuxedo colors.

The home design trend right now is about color and contrast in appliances, cabinetry, and décor, so our new color profile is on trend. It’s also the ideal way to offer designers new choices that bring indoor style outdoors for their clients. We debuted the new look at the Las Vegas Kitchen & Bath Industry Show last year, and the response was even better than we anticipated.

Why is Dometic Twin Eagles a favorite of specialty retailers?

Frey: Specialty retailers are drawn to our brand because we listen to them and stand behind our products. We are very much a customer-first company in how we approach our decision-making, strategic planning, marketing—everything. Our retail partners make the world go round for us. We keep our ears wide open and solicit their input in the area of prod-

uct innovation and development because they know their customers’ wants and needs better than anyone.

Retailers also like that we have a deep and wide selection of engineered products that appeal to any type of customer from our ultra-premium Eagle One grill to our flagship C-series grills and our affordable Delta Heat line of cooking equipment. The fact that they are all made by one trusted partner under one roof in Cerritos, California, is an added bonus.

Are there any specific ways you are helping retailers boost their bottom line?

Frey: One of the things we have been challenged to do over the past couple of years is to speak more directly to the consumer audience and to do our part to drive foot traffic into stores. One of the ways we are doing this is through social media.

We know staying active on social media can be time consuming for busy retailers, so we are creating content, bundling it, and passing it on to them to use—however and whenever they need it. We distribute it to them via email where they can download an asset package that contains photos, videos, suggested copy, and ideas on how to use certain platforms effectively, whether it’s posting reels on Instagram or product images on Facebook.

Since we started the program, we have found that the

retailers who have chosen to take advantage of what we have to offer are successfully reaching out to more potential business than ever before.

What do you see as the brand’s biggest opportunity going forward?

Frey: I think in many ways there is a lot of similarity in products on the market right now. There is an opportunity for Dometic Twin Eagles to differentiate itself because we offer commercial performance with a level of refinement that one would find in indoor appliances. We have plans to take some bold steps to fine tune and expand the capabilities of our luxury grills in a big way over the next few years.

Electric On the Move

Innovations from Dimplex advance electric fireplaces in the consumer market.

SEVERAL FACTORS SET DIMPLEXAPART AS A

front-runner in the electric fireplace category. At the forefront, Dimplex offers a tremendously deep product line, says Darin Del Gardo, director of sales. “In addition, we offer many different proprietary technologies built into every fireplace. It is these innovations, along with our product development, that gives us the ability to deliver one of the most realistic electric fireplace experiences in the market.”

Part of Glen Dimplex Americas (Cambridge, Ontario), the Dimplex brand produces a variety of energy efficient heating appliances and systems with a portfolio of more than 700 products and over 1,500 dealers located throughout North America. Dimplex always strives to give the marketplace more options. To this end, the company introduced two built-in linear electric fireplaces in 2022: the IgniteXL Bold and the Multi-Fire Slim.

These products have been very well received because they expand application options for existing products that have already been successful in the marketplace, Del Gardo says. Enhancements were made to each fireplace so that they would fit into different market segments.

For example, the IgniteXL Bold is a deeper, larger-scale fireplace than the IgniteXL model. Available in 50”, 60”, 74”, 88”, and 100” sizes, this premier model features a clean, front face with minimal trim creating a flawless, panoramic view. It also comes

with more features and choices such as four installation configurations from one unit, including front-facing, right and left corner, or bay; Dimplex’s Multi-Fire XD Flame Effect for brighter and more realistic flames; and the Comfort$aver Heating System that provides safe, ceramic heat, 11% energy savings, and the ability to warm up to 1,000 square feet.

A free mobile app is also available to control the fireplace from a smartphone. “Our IgniteXL Bold is a great fit for a larger home or commercial space, and it’s also the perfect transition for that consumer who was planning on a gas fireplace but now wants to go with electric,” Del Gardo says.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Multi-Fire Slim Linear Electric Fireplace is a product that can literally be installed anywhere, he notes. The fireplace is the perfect choice for smaller rooms of a home or those with limited space, like condominiums or townhomes. Since it is less than 4” deep, it is the first linear fireplace to fit flush into 2”x 4” framing, making it easy to

install into existing walls, and it can also be surface mounted and still have a very low profile—an even easier installation.

“For both of these fireplaces, we leveraged our technology that people already loved and were familiar with to give them more sizes and choices,” Del Gardo says.

Currently, Dimplex’s two biggest sellers are the original IgniteXL and the IgniteXL Bold. The company is very excited to unveil a third model in the series later this year. The new offering will be a combination of these two popular models featuring the size of the original XL with the features of the XL Bold, Del Gardo says. “It will expand our options even more, giving the consumer a good, better, best option.”

In the Opti-myst line—which uses revolutionary ultrasonic technology to produce a fine mist or vapor creating the real look of flames and smoke—a new glasssealed linear fireplace will be introduced. This innovation stabilizes the vapor inside the fireplace. Maximum flame height and appearance will remain consistent

since the seal will eliminate disruptions from drafts in the room generated by ceiling fans, HVAC vents, or air coming from open doors and windows. “In my opinion, this will truly provide the bridge in conversion from a gas fireplace to electric,” Del Gardo says.

THE CHOICE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

The global electric fireplace market is expanding with a compound annual growth rate of 3.7% between 2022 and 2032, according to a report by Future Market Insights. Several factors have led to the heightened demand for electric fireplaces, including increased energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, improved heat capabilities, more realistic flames, and the ease of installation almost anywhere with no chimney required.

In addition, Del Gardo notes, as homes and their HVAC systems have become more efficient, people are no longer relying on fireplaces as their primary heat source. “In fact, excessive heat from a convention-

al gas or wood-burning fireplace becomes more of a problem than a benefit. People still love the visual effect and ambiance of flames, but they don’t need or want all the heat that comes from those flames.”

Furthermore, as the trend continues with the

American Renaissance Grill Made In America

installation of televisions above a fireplace, it has become more advantageous to use electric alternatives to avoid excessive heat from a gas fireplace affecting equipment. “We have seen gas manufacturers coming up with ways to divert the heat to keep the electronics above their fireplaces safe,” Del Gardo says. “Our solution is to just not make the excessive heat.”

As climate concerns grow, there is an overall movement away from fossil fuels and toward electric as the energy source for homes, making an electric hearth a more desirable choice. “We are starting to see municipalities limit the amount of gas lines that are run, because in certain places the grid cannot handle the demand,” Del Gardo says. In fact, many cities across the United States have already implemented bans of natural gas hookups in new construction starts.

“When you look at the pros and cons, there are so many more benefits of going with electric in the fireplace category.” Similar to the automotive industry, Dimplex is putting the majority of its efforts into electrification, Del Gardo adds. “Dimplex is at the forefront of sustainability, and we are very proud of our efforts in this arena.”

DISCOVER DIMPLEX TOUR

In 2022, the company announced the launch of its Discover Dimplex tour—an innovative and first-of-akind program in the hearth industry. The tour gives dealers, their partners, and consumers the convenience of seeing products at an on-site mobile showroom that features a number of electric models, including the IgniteXL Bold, Multi-Fire Slim Linear, and Opti-myst Water Vapor fireplaces.

The 43-foot state-of-the-art trailer (encompassing 500 square feet) will tour many regions in 2023. In addition to serving as a luxury showroom, the trailer can also be used by dealers to host meetings with their prospective clients, including builders, architects, contractors, developers, interior designers, and end-users.

The program’s genesis came from numerous calls from prospective customers asking where they can see an actual working fireplace on display. People would watch videos on the internet, but they couldn’t believe the fireplaces could possibly look that good. “They needed to see a working display of our fireplaces for themselves,” Del Gardo says. “The response has been terrific.”

He says the tour also does a great job of getting eyes on the product from those professionals who are speccing out fireplaces such as architects, designers, and builders. Del Gardo’s concern is that, as the need for fossil fuels and gas is reduced, there will also be less demand for fireplaces. “Getting out in front and letting people know energy efficient options exist is crucial, not only for Dimplex but for the hearth industry as a whole— we need to keep it moving to the next level.”

GOING THE DISTANCE

Mendota Hearth endures by staying true to its corporate vision.

THE TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY WAS A time of innovation for many companies. It was in 1901 that Johnson Gas Appliance Company was first established, which manufactured gas lamps, as well as industrial furnaces, and has focused on combustion now for over 120 years. And while, during the company’s long-standing history, Johnson Gas Appliance Company has evolved, expanded, and welcomed new technologies into its fold of products, the company has also remained true to its original mission: To provide exceptional highend products to consumers.

According to Ron Schinnerer, sales and marketing leader for North America, Johnson Gas Appliance is the only true gas appliance company that builds gas fireplaces today.

“Johnson Gas Appliance Company, and now Mendota Hearth, tran-

sitioned from wood to gas fireplaces in the 1980s,” Schinnerer says. “Throughout the next 40 years, the company’s innovations in fireplace lines included burn quality, fronts, liners, detailed logs, and a variety of fireplace shapes, asking customers to imagine the possibilities. With our focus on innovation and growth with our retail partners, we have changed the expectations of our industry.”

PRODUCT FOCUS

Today, Mendota Hearth continues to focus on gas fire innovation while also looking to the future. One such recent innovation that Johnson Gas introduced is NetZero Fire, which was created in 2020 to offer sustainable and clean-burning options for the future of fireplaces and the industry. This forward thinking was well received, and NetZero Fire was awarded the 2023 Sustainable Product of the Year by Green Builder Magazine.

“What a wonderful recognition to receive as a new player within the sustainability space. Now customers can have luxury fire features without the constraints of venting or gas lines,” Schinnerer says.

“Indeed, NetZero Fire is being embraced by new consumers and industries who are looking for sustainable, environmentally friendly features to generate a focal point

that not only offers the aesthetics of a classic fireplace, but also boasts a realism to draw the family back into the living room for those special nights.”

“The NetZero E-One electric fireplace is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option for those who want to enjoy the beauty of fire without the negative impact of emissions or fossil fuels,” Schinnerer says. “Its design allows us to offer a front and rear burner on an electric fireplace for the first time in history. The E-One is suitable for various spaces and is customizable, allowing users to adjust flame type, height, tone, ember intensity, and even the sound of burning wood via an intuitive remote. Seeing is believing!”

And while the NetZero E-One is proving to be very successful among consumers, so too is the NetZero Waterplace, an innovative fireplace design that utilizes pure water to create dancing, rolling flames that have the allure of a conventional fire, but without any emissions.

According to Schinnerer, the Waterplace uses only water vapor to create natural-looking flames that provide alwayson ambiance without any emissions. “Like NetZero E-One, the NetZero Waterplace can be installed anywhere, but it also boasts a constant fuel supply provided by a water line,” Schinnerer

says. “The fireplace features a range of configurations, glass media, and integrated color-changing LED lights that can be controlled to create a unique feature.”

The third product under the NetZero Fire brand is NetZero Renew, which also offers a flueless install and is powered by renewable bioethanol to offer a “real” flame. Available in seven sizes, it comes with a range of LED lighting packages to customize the look of the flames.

“Like our Waterplace, the Renew burner can be installed in a NetZero firebox or it can be site-built for a specific location in any room,” Schinnerer says. “Safety is key with any fireplace design, and the NetZero Renew boasts a patented Burning Ethanol Vapor (BEV) system, keeping the fuel contained in a closed tank safely removed from the flame and combustion, ensuring safety during the entire burning process. A microprocessor and multiple safety sensors control and monitor the fireplace while in use.”

“Once the device is turned on, the fuel is automatically pumped to the evaporation accelerator where the liquid ethanol turns into vapor,” Schinnerer says. “The flame and combustion never have any contact with the fuel, creating a separation of raw fuel and combustion, for a new generation of safety for ethanol burners in NetZero Renew fireplaces.”

As Schinnerer further points out, the hearth industry is evolving and consumers are now open to consider alternatives to natural gas. “As parts of the country outlaw natural gas, the industry must evolve and provide options,”

Schinnerer says. “NetZero Fire has embraced this global initiative with the three alternatives: biofuel fireplace, water vapor fireplace, and holographic fireplace.”

CLOSE COLLABORATION

Since 1901, Johnson Gas has focused on understanding what consumers are looking for in gas products— whether that be for commercial or residential use. The company has recognized the importance of truly engaging with consumers. As such today, Mendota Hearth and NetZero Fire offer the hearth industry the next steps through innovation and partnerships. The ability to share the endless possibilities of design to match any décor to customers is the first step. “The endless possibilities break down the barriers of fireplace design and help customers create a work of art for their home,” Schinnerer says.

And while the selection process continues to be refined, so do the intricacies of the fireplace design elements. In recognition of this, Mendota Hearth has put a lot of effort into developing some of the most realistic flame designs. And the company has recognized that customization is key for today’s consumers and, therefore, offers a wealth of options for consumers to make fireplace design and functionality their own.

“With the push of a button or flip of a switch, customers can control the heat output of their fireplace, allowing them to enjoy the ambiance of the flames year-round without sacrificing comfort,” Schinnerer

says. “Some of our bestselling products include Mendota inserts, Mendota landscape fireplaces, and our large selection of linear fireplaces hitting the mark with customers.”

Johnson Gas recognizes that consumers want sustainable products, Schinnerer says. “Today, they want products with heat, they want products without heat, they want products that look and feel like real wood fire, and they want products that provide a focal point to their room. Mendota Hearth and NetZero Fire combine to meet all these needs.”

In addition, the company meets consumers’ desires to purchase high-quality products. With over a century of expertise, Mendota Hearth has clearly identified what it means to create high quality, durable products that not only meet discerning consumers’ interests but also truly provide products that last. It prides itself on offering products that are American-made.

Although Mendota Hearth has made a name for itself within the hearth industry for decades, their time at HPBExpo and the IBS tradeshows in 2023 confirmed that their latest vision is shared by dealers, designers, builders, and customers alike.

“We are a company focused on our relationships with our selected dealer network. Our dealers share our vision and are true partners in this philosophy. Our partnership is focused on innovation, growth, and respect,” Schinnerer says. “We are lifelong partners with our dealers.”

Winning by DESIGN

excellence in the world of casual furnishings, the most prestigious and prized award is the ICFA Lillian B. Winchester—Best of Show. In 2022, the design vision of Jensen Outdoor was recognized with this award for its Tempo All Weather Lounge Chair.

While also capturing the Lilly Award for furniture, Tempo’s accolades were not only a tribute to the work of Jensen in collaboration with an independent design duo, but also the company’s strong commitment to innovation and an ability to stay ahead of design trends focused on the luxury residential outdoor furniture market.

“The Tempo collection, by Italian designers and brothers Edi and Paola Ciani, showcases the incredible talent and craftsmanship of our in-house team working with furniture and fabric design partners,” says Eric Parsons, recently promoted president of Jensen Outdoor. “Our team is always striving to push the boundaries of what is possible in outdoor furniture, and this award is a testament to their dedication and creativity.”

Through inspiration, partnerships, and stewardship, Jensen Outdoor’s winning design process

results in casual furnishings each season that receive award consideration as much as make environmentally conscious outdoor statements.

WINNING DESIGN PROCESS

“The design process at Jensen Outdoor is meticulous and each design takes between one to three years to bring to market,” Parsons says. “Our Jensen in-house team ensures that every new design is thoughtfully curated and brings something unique to the collection. Our process is lengthy, but we believe that every piece should be made with intention and quality to ensure our customers have outdoor furniture that they can enjoy for many years.”

On a continuing basis, the product development team at Jensen Outdoor works closely with independent designers from Europe and North America. Additionally, these professionals receive feedback by listening to their customers.

“Customer satisfaction and feedback are integral to our design process,” Parsons says. “We listen closely to our customers and consider their feedback when designing new ranges; however, we forever consider trends in both the outdoor and indoor design worlds during the process. It’s important to us that our furniture not only looks great, but also meets the needs and desires of fashion-forward consumers.”

WINNING INSPIRATION AND TRENDS

Meeting those product needs starts with inspiration. For Jensen Outdoor, global design trends and cultural influences are the source of inspiration for its product designs.

“The inspiration behind the Tempo collection was to create a contemporary European-influenced aesthetic using element-enduring materials to bring comfort and elegant style to our outdoor furniture,” Parsons says. This award-winning carefree outdoor

style resulted in a blending of form and function when performance fabric characteristics were married with an impervious Ipe frame.

“We pay close attention to current outdoor living trends and use that information to inform our design decisions,” Parsons says. “For example, we’ve noticed a shift toward more modern and minimalist styles in outdoor furniture, so we’ve incorporated that into some of our recent designs, including the Tempo collection.”

In addition to reflecting current trends, Jensen Outdoor also considers the practical needs and preferences of their customers. “We want our customers to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces to the fullest, so we design furniture that is both beautiful and functional,” Parsons says. “An increasing trend among woven manufacturers of late has been the integration of foam cushioning beneath the woven fiber, thus offering a soft-seat frame without the requirement to bring cushions indoors in advance of inclement weather.”

WINNING DESIGN PARTNERSHIPS

A commitment to providing the best outdoor furniture experience for their customers is evident in Jensen Outdoor’s use of high-quality and sustainable materials, and a dedication to design innovation. This has been accomplished through not only design partnerships, but material component collaborations as well.

The designers of the Tempo collection blended a contemporary Italian aesthetic with weather-resistant materials and plush cushions dressed in waterproof Ultrafabrics performance fabrics. This fabric selection, with its water-shedding feature, allows for the collection to remain outside without having to bring the cushions indoors.

“This is a first in the casual furniture industry,”

Parsons says. “The use of Ultrafabrics performance cushions, known for their overall comfort and water resistance in the commercial and marine industries, helped us achieve this milestone for outdoor furniture.”

The milestone, as well as design collaboration, has proven to be a winning combination in many ways as the Tempo collection has been well received this season. Parsons states that “it’s a collection that speaks for itself.” The quality and design of the collection have been met with overwhelming enthusiasm from customers, and the

“Best of Show” award that Tempo received is just the cherry on top of an already successful launch.

WINNING DESIGNS IN THE WORKS

Jensen Outdoor strives to stay ahead of design trends and introduce fresh, new, and successful collections to the market every season. In speaking to the introductions at the Atlanta Market, Parsons emphasizes that “we always have to be thinking about what’s next and pushing the envelope in terms of design and functionality.”

Jensen Outdoor will showcase its newly introduced products at various markets this season. Included are the Spring High Point Market; the July Casual Market in Atlanta, at which they will unveil a 6,000-square-foot showroom; the September Outdoor Design Market in Atlanta; and the Fall High Point Market.

“At almost twice the square footage of our former Chicago showroom, the new Atlanta showroom will have the most diverse array of Jensen Outdoor products shown anywhere, providing retailers and designers with a comprehensive view of our offering,” Parsons says.

WINNING SUSTAINABILITY

For the 2023-24 season, Jensen Outdoor is excited to showcase a variety of innovative design elements and functions across its new Heritage and Foundations collections. Parsons emphasized that the company’s designs are always guided by its commitment to sustainability and the use of responsibly harvested FSC-certified Ipe and teak timber.

Parsons notes that Jensen Outoor’s Classic Ipe collection has long been the workhorse of volume for the company. Consisting of classically styled dining, hidining, tables, and accessory seating, this range drives almost 20% of company revenue. Recognizing both the importance of the range as well as the need for addressing the style interests of a younger consumer, Jensen will redefine this portion of the product offering under the descriptor of Heritage, which includes both Classic Ipe as well as the new category of Modern Ipe.

New for next season will be several dining, bench dining, hi dining, Adirondack, and occasional bench and table designs, all with a modern twist. Overall, the company estimates that these introductions will be well received by existing customers and those looking for a fresh new style in their outdoor living spaces.

WHAT’S NEXT

Jensen Outdoor has a strong commitment to innovation and staying ahead of design trends in the luxury residential outdoor furniture market. “We want to continue to provide the design industry with fresh, inspired collections that meet their needs for outdoor living spaces,” Parsons says. “At the same time, we recognize the value of our classic lines and are dedicated to updating their function in a modern design language.”

Jensen Outdoor’s commitment to quality and innovation in outdoor furniture ensures that customers can look forward to continued “Design Excellence.”

COOLCabinets

Stylish modular cabinets and grill carts from Rock Run Cabinetry appeal to outdoor living enthusiasts.

ROCK RUN CABINETRY (TOPEKA, INDIANA)

has revolutionized the use of aluminum cabinetry in the outdoor industry since it launched in 2020 as a division of Rock Run Industries LLC. The company has quickly built a reputation for providing premium, durable aluminum cabinets designed for garages, grill carts, outdoor kitchens, and more.

“After years of experimenting and dabbling in metal cabinetry, Rock Run Industries finally had the space to pursue it full time,” says John Schlabach, business development officer.

Rock Run has many years of experience building steel cabinetry for the RV industry. The company had wanted to expand by introducing an aluminum cabinet product for the residential market, and the purchase of an 80-acre industrial complex with 400,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Topeka made this possible.

While Rock Run continues to build RV components at their Millersburg, Indiana, location, Rock Run Cabinetry separated from Rock Run Industries in January 2021 because of rapid growth. Schlabach notes that the past two years have brought challenges, but Rock Run has overcome them. “Rock Run Cabinetry, however, has pushed through and created a premium brand without the premium price.”

The company’s cabinetry lives up to its reputation as “The ANYWHERE Cabinet,” having been installed in garages, indoor and outdoor kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, basements, dog kennels, and catering trailers. Crafted with high-quality aluminum, these cabinets

offer a level of durability that customers want, especially for outdoor spaces.

“Aluminum has a high strength-toweight ratio, making it an ideal substitute for wood,” Schlabach says. “There is no risk of mold, rot, rust, or thermal expansion or contraction with these.” Most of Rock Run’s products are constructed with 11-gauge or 14-gauge aluminum. “This is more robust than most other metal cabinet builders,” Schlabach says. “All components are individually powder-coated, creating a superior product where there is no raw aluminum show-

ing. Most of the assembly is done with stainless steel rivets ensuring a tighter construction than compared with screws or similar fasteners.”

Rock Run’s attention to detail enabled them to create sleek cabinetry that people enjoy using. “Customers love the quiet, smooth operation of Rock Run Cabinetry’s product,” Schlabach says. “Soft-close undermount drawer guides and soft-closing hinges make this possible. Another reason is the solid twoskin doors and drawer fronts that utilize sound dampening strips to further arrest

any noise typically associated with metal cabinets.”

While versatile, sturdy, and attractive cabinetry is a staple of the company, Schlabach notes that the fastest growing segment is the outdoor kitchen and grill cart lines. The top seller is the Grand Mesa cart for ceramic grills, which features a large-sealed drawer and a recyclable/wastebasket pullout. “The cart has everything you need for a complete grilling package,” he says. The patio line of cabinets, built to accommodate most grill brands and appliances, has also been a popular choice for outdoor spaces.

This year, Rock Run Cabinetry introduced many new additions, including the Double Grill Cart. This cart includes a trash pullout, two large storage drawers, and another drawer for utensils, providing ample grilling and storage room. “Two ceramic grills fit in this cart for the avid griller,” Schlabach says.

Another new addition is the Economy Grill Cart that can be shipped in a flat box via UPS or FedEx. There is some assembly required, but this option can save a lot of money on freight costs. “Custom-built trays to retrofit your existing griddle into Rock Run’s cabinetry are now available as well,” Schlabach says. “There is also a gas grill cart in the works that will fit most brands of gas grills.”

Rock Run Cabinetry is poised to continue to innovate products that are in high demand, such as its growing line of grill carts. Because the company does everything inhouse, it can ensure product quality and fast lead times. “Rock Run Cabinetry stands on its own in the industry when it gets to lead time and consistent quality,”

Schlabach says. “Rock Run has a solid four-week lead time from order to delivery. Steps are being made to lower this even further.”

The company also prioritizes making sure each product reaches the customer in the same condition it leaves the factory. “All cabinets come packaged with doublewalled cardboard, foam corners, and strapped to a skid to help mitigate freight damage,” Schlabach says. “Shipping direct to the end user is an option that Rock Run offers as well.”

The quick and convenient ordering process facilitated by a custom design tool and ordering software is another strength of Rock Run. “Dealer partners are able to design, render, and accurately quote projects for their customers within minutes,” Schlabach says. “Even freight is quoted in real time based on the order and location of delivery.

Rock Run teamed up with its online partner, Matchless Cabinet, to make this happen.”

With more than 800 SKUs in Rock Run’s product lineup, customers can design a semi-custom kitchen at a standard price. Magnetic toe kick, caster plates, and filler pieces are also available to help create an ideal final product.

When customers receive their cabinets, installation is easy, which appeals to a growing amount of DIY buyers. The design of the cabinets where both the left and right side are finished eliminates the need to add finished end panels because all the cabinets can be used on the end of a run. “The modular system Rock Run utilizes makes the design and install process a snap,” Schlabach says. “Simply mix and match cabinets and move them around to create the desired layout.”

As the young company grows, Schlabach emphasizes Rock Run Cabinetry will continue to build beautiful, high-quality cabinets at an affordable price. It will do this through a combination of state-of-the-art equipment, talented employees, and superior customer service.

“Being upfront, honest, and having a commonsense business model is Rock Run’s constant goal,” Schlabach says. “Rock Run will partner with our dealers to bring complete customer satisfaction to the end users of our cabinets.”

NorthCape lets customers personalize their outdoor spaces with fabrics and finishes.

CUSTOMIZATION

MAY BE ONE of the furniture industry’s most overused buzzwords, but it’s a very real buzz that’s driving short- and longterm growth at outdoor furniture resource NorthCape.

Longtime President Tom Murray says the development of customizable products—primarily made of poly lumber and aluminum—has created a buzz not only among his dealers, but within the company, since increased customization means increased domestic production.

“We’re maintaining some of our relationships with Asian factories, but the main growth driver will be product that is fully made in the United States,” Murray says. “We’re in the middle of those transitions now, which is exciting.”

Murray believes the customization push will be successful because most competitors at NorthCape’s middle to upper-middle price points are focused on

TOP: Hixon, a full-line mixed media collection, has many customizable options.

imports, which severely limits their ability to offer custom fabrics, finishes, and the like.

“There’s a gap in the market for customization at a reasonable price,” he says, noting that NorthCape dining sets typically retail for $1,999 to $4,999. “That’s a niche I think we can exploit because there aren’t a lot of people doing that right now. We want to offer some customization and still maintain a value.”

Customized or not, he said domestic production allows the company to offer dealers better lead times and improved inventory flow while avoiding many of the supply chain woes that have

plagued the industry since the pandemic.

Some of the domestic production involves the use of domestic and imported parts, but Murray is striving to find more domestic components suppliers as he works toward his goal of building outdoor furniture without any imported parts. “It does a lot for our customers,” Murray says of the customization and domestic production push. “We can add a lot of value by buying the parts ourselves and completing customization here.”

Nearly all of the domestic production takes place in the Chicago area near NorthCape’s main

Earth Friendly

This company’s products gain popularity as customers go green when furnishing their backyards.

Robinson says. “In 2020, we invested in a new pelletizer machine that allows us to take in even more variety and increased volume of recycled plastic material and continue to have consistent, high-quality recycled lumber.”

She says the vertically integrated process allows the company to deliver “a great value proposition” to retailers while maintaining high product quality and durability that appeals to both residential and commercial users.

“In addition to the sustainability movement, North American made and high-quality product design are also extremely important to consumers,” Robinson says. “We are continuously reinvesting in cost-saving equipment, automation, and improved manufacturing processes to offer the best value in outdoor furniture in the market.”

BY ENJOYING A GLASS OF MILK, washing your hair, or applying body lotion to your dry skin, you just might be helping supply raw materials to one of North America’s leading outdoor furniture producers.

No, the folks at C.R. Plastic Products aren’t going to personally pick up those empty plastic bottles. But if those bottles wind up at a recycling center, they could eventually become part of the roughly 12 million pounds of recycled plastic the company uses each year to make dining tables and chairs, deep seating pieces, and its iconic Adirondack chairs.

That’s a lot of milk jugs, but since it takes approximately 549 of them to make one Adirondack chair, the need is great.

This process makes the company a key participant in the so-called circular economy, where sustainability is king.

“Consumers want to purchase products that are sustainable and feel like they are contributing to investing back in the environment,” says Meaghan Robinson, director of sales and marketing. “With the prevalence of climate-related issues, sustainable products and companies are top of mind when making a key purchasing decision.”

She said the increased consumer awareness of sustainability has helped drive significant sales increases in recent years and, coupled with increased interest in outdoor living spaces, should continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

“We are positive about the upward trajectory of the outdoor furniture business,” Robinson says. “People want to

continue to invest in their outdoor living spaces and see it as an extension of their indoor living space and aesthetic.”

GRIND AND REUSE

C.R. Plastic’s entire lineup is made from recycled HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, a plastic commonly used for shampoo bottles, laundry detergent containers, bottle caps, and milk jugs. (Look for the numeral 2 inside the recycling triangle on the bottom of the container.)

As part of the company’s vertically integrated operation, it grinds up post-consumer HDPE at its 300,000-square-foot factory in Stratford, Ontario, where it has more than 180 employees.

“We control every part of our process from the intake of the recycled HDPE materials to our proprietary extrusion process to manufacture our own unique recycled lumber,”

And nowhere is that value demonstrated better than the company’s Adirondack chair, which has been one of its bestselling products for nearly 30 years.

Robinson says consumers are looking for great design, comfort, and durability when they’re in the market for outdoor furniture, and their classic Adirondack has proven itself a winner on all counts.

“It’s extremely durable and structurally designed to withstand heavy winds, storms, and extreme winters,” she says. “It has superior comfort built into its beautiful design with a waterfall front and ergonomically curved back, and it boasts our unique fit and finish with our proprietary recycled extruded lumber. It’s at a great price point in the market and truly offers consumers the value proposition they are looking for when investing in outdoor furniture.”

C.R. Plastic’s lineup now includes five Adirondack chairs. In addition to the classic style, there’s a rocker, a glider, and a model with modern styling that features a rectangular back instead of the traditional fan-shaped back. Plus, there’s an upright model for those who have a hard time getting in and out of a traditional Adirondack. The arms are higher, and the seat has been raised to allow for easier ingress and egress.

The classic and upright models are available

HPC Fire Inspired ™ Acquires Tru-Fab

OHIO BASED HPC FIRE INSPIRED ™ HAS EARNED A STELLAR REPUTATION in the fire industry, but company officials are not resting on their laurels. In a move that will enhance HPC’s ability to manufacture CSA-certified and engineered-to-order custom solutions, the company has acquired Tru-Fab.

The acquisition became official on May 1st and Sean Steimle, CEO of HPC Fire Inspired™ confirms that the bold move will boost HPC’s already strong fire fabrication solutions while creating additional value for customers. Tru-Fab is an experienced fabrication company and has been serving the industry since 1978.

Tru-Fab has been a valued strategic partner and supplier to HPC for many years and the acquisition is expected to expand customengineered designs, allowing the fire feature manufacturer to better accommodate consumer desires. “Our engineered-to-order designs are curated, maintaining both ANSI and CSA standards,” Steimle explains. “Each design is catered to the specs of our dealers and consumers’ requests.”

HPC’s signature designs can be found in many diverse commercial settings including professional and collegiate sport facilities. Unique HPC creations have been designed for professional ballparks and football stadiums throughout the country, which enhance the overall experience for sports fans.

“Our most popular custom designs are HPC’s long linear burners, radius, L shape/right angle, as well as our unique U shape,” Steimle says. “These burners are used in different applications such as highlighting the edge of a pool or enhancing an outdoor bar or kitchen. HPC is able to customize these designs by utilizing stainless steel tubing, which allows our team to create curvatures and angles.”

Each burner hole is tooled instead of punched out to ensure a quiet, unobstructed flame. With HPC, users enjoy a custom design that lights every time. Steimle is confident that the Tru-Fab acquisition will “further our current capabilities to create memorable moments in any backyard or commercial entertainment venues.”

The existing partnership with Tru-Fab has set a strong foundation. HPC believes this will aid in a smooth transition. With the added technology and experience, the Ohio manufacturer will be able to deliver enhanced designs with shorter lead times. Steimle adds: “HPC is always striving for continuous improvement and increased in-house fabrication will enhance our team’s ability to improve finishing operations as well as quickly develop prototypes designed by our Research and Design [R&D] team.”

The fabrication acquisition will seamlessly integrate with HPC’s current fire fabrication strategy and strengthen its vertical integration program, providing better control of inventory and supply chain and allowing HPC to provide fire feature

solutions across multiple customer channels.

Tru-Fab’s talented sheet metal engineers and skilled craftsmen have long worked to produce highquality custom metal fabrications. Now under the HPC banner, the team can provide quick solutions to their R&D center. Tru-Fab’s metal fabrication capabilities include: shearing, breaking, punching, painting, welding, grinding, and finishing. Each design will be fabricated with state-of-the-art equipment such as CNC automatic press breaks, turrets, shearing equipment, welders, lasers, and paint systems.

“Tru-Fab’s 40-plus years of fabrication experience, and their talented employees, will give HPC the ability to provide customers with unique commercial and residential designs,” Steimle enthuses. “We are excited to join forces and weave the Tru-Fab team into our HPC family.”

warehouse and corporate offices—where the company has more than 100 employees—but a small amount is also done at a second warehouse in New Jersey.

Murray believes the company’s domestically made product could become its biggest category in two years. “It has always been my dream to do something fun domestically and add value to it … not just broker goods from an overseas factory,” he says.

One of NorthCape’s newest upholstered seating groups, for example, is a fully domestic product (no imported parts) that features a frame made from the waste created by its poly lumber line. “Since the frame is covered with fabric, it doesn’t matter what color it is,” Murray says. “And it keeps our costs down because we’re repurposing poly lumber waste. It and all of our newer items manufactured in the U.S. are definitely the growth drivers right now.”

Despite the emphasis on domestic production, Murray says the company isn’t abandoning its woven product line, which has been a NorthCape stable for

in 14 colors, while the others have five to seven color options. Many also have matching footstools and side tables available.

GOING DEEP

Robinson says the fastest-growing product category, however, is deep seating. She says the transitional Tofino collection, in particular, has been on a rapid growth trajectory the past two years. “It appeals to a broad range of consumers and an array of outdoor spaces,” she says. “It boasts clean lines and a transitional design that is entirely modular, so you can customize the set depending on the outdoor space.”

Pieces include a sofa, loveseat, swivel armchair, chaise, coffee table, and end table. A corner piece is also available, which allows the seating area to be configured as a sectional. (And for those looking for a sustainability angle, no fewer than 6,469 recycled plastic bottle caps are used in each deep seating chair.)

All items are available in five frame colors and eight fabric cushion patterns.

Robinson notes that the cushions are produced by a local cut-and-sew manufacturer, and all of its fabrics are from Sunbrella. “The gray frame and fabric tones that have dominated over the last couple of

years. Because weaving is so labor intensive, it will continue to be done in Asia for the foreseeable future, but he’s exploring ways to complete the weaving overseas while doing final assembly at his Chicago factory.

Murray says there is still a “massive inventory problem” at the retail and wholesale levels, but he’s optimistic the situation will smooth itself out this season.

“Fortunately, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel because the end users (consumers) are still showing up,” he says. “At retail, we’re probably turning units close to 2019 levels … but dealers are going to be more sensitive to overstocking, so it’s a little difficult to project how that’s going to affect our orders. Most of us—including me—are sitting on inventory we paid way too much for.”

He says he’s advising his dealers to adopt a “hybrid strategy” for selling off excess inventory. That means selling some of it at a reasonable margin based on the actual (pandemic-fueled) landed

cost, and sell the remainder based on today’s landed cost—which should be much lower because freight rates have tumbled in recent months. “That way, they can avoid dumping everything at low margin,” he explains. “Only liquidate if you’re desperate for cash.”

Murray agrees with a theory promoted by some economists that the U.S. is in the midst of a “rolling recession,” which means a downturn doesn’t impact all segments of the economy at the same time. “Our industry might be coming out of it already,” he says. “I think the

rebalancing (of inventory flow) is going to be strong and it’s going to come in a wave.”

He says about half of NorthCape’s sales still come from specialty stores, despite a shift away from that retail segment following the Great Recession of 2007 and 2008. About 30% of sales come from traditional, full-line furniture stores, and the remaining 20% is generated by e-commerce. According to Murray, the e-commerce figure includes online sales made by full-line furniture stores and specialty stores.

years will continue to be a staple color palette,” she says. “We are seeing a design trend toward more warm, natural tones like beige, soft neutrals and whites, with people adding a touch of color like a coastal blue or seafoam green with their fabric or throw pillow choices.”

She says the company’s lineup of pub chairs, barstools, tables, and counterheight casual seating groups also has been doing well. “We have seen great growth in this casual seating category, as well, and expect customers to continue to gravitate toward these products because of the broad color range, functional designs, and highly durable qualities. These products are also great for commercial use.”

Key items in this segment include pub-height and counter-height armchairs with fan-shaped backs that resemble Adirondack chairs, as well as chaise lounges, benches, and picnic tables.

MOVING FORWARD

For the current season, Robinson says the company dialed back product introductions so it could focus on reducing lead times and realigning inventories that had gotten out of whack during the pandemic. That effort has largely been suc-

cessful, and she says the company is seeing a return to normal seasonal sales patterns—something that had all but disappeared during the previous two years.

Earlier this year, however, the company did successfully launch a quick-ship program. It features select bestsellers that can be shipped from its North Carolina distribution center in one to three days.

dealers a great way to increase sales revenue this season on our bestselling products with these quickship times and no inventory commitment,” she says.

For the 2024 season, the company is planning a number of product launches at Casual Market Atlanta, the newly relocated casual furniture market that takes place July 10-13 at AmericasMart. “We are excited to expand our product line for the 2024 season,” Robinson says. “We are bringing back some products and colors due to popular demand and releasing some new products.”
