into effect just over one year ago, there are so many things we miss seeing and doing. For some, it’s missing travel; dining in at restaurants; going to the movies; attending a concert, the theatre, or an athletic event; or just being able to sit inside Starbucks for 10 minutes enjoying a latte. For many students, it’s missing learning in a classroom, walking the halls with classmates, and participating in or attending after-school events. For many business people, it’s going to the office, partaking in offsite events, and attending trade shows and industry events. And for most all of us, it’s not being able to gather as usual with family and friends. If my wife were to make a list of the things that she misses the most, volunteering would be at the top of her list. For several years, my wife has been a hospital volunteer. Each week, she anxiously looked forward to going to a local hospital. Until vaccinations are made available to a larger segment of the U.S. population, and until the number of COVID-19 patients being treated at the hospital is greatly reduced, my wife will continue to miss assisting patients, working with other hospital volunteers and healthcare professionals, and getting that special joy that only comes from helping people and serving others. Over the years, we have profiled many specialty retailers and manufacturers that are involved with volunteer efforts and programs. Like many service-oriented industries, our industry is comprised of people who understand and appreciate the purpose of service, and people who go the extra mile of providing White Glove service. At the beginning of the pandemic, many manufacturers in our industry stepped up to the plate to help with manufacturing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Our industry has been very supportive over the year with Operation BBQ Relief, a non-profit organization with a network of volunteers and equipment across the country, that provides hot meals to communities impacted by disasters and first responders that are on the ground helping. Since specialty retailers in our industry are so enmeshed with the local community, their volunteer efforts and programs are greatly appreciated by those they help. A recent article by Joanne Fritz that appeared in the January 16, 2021, edition of The Balance Small Business, gave “15 Unexpected Benefits of Volunteering.” As Fritz points out, being a volunteer is not only

good for others, but it’s also good for yourself. Here’s an overview of just some of the unexpected benefits of volunteering: • Builds Community – You strengthen your community and your social network when you volunteer. • Ends Loneliness – 45 percent of people in the U.S. and U.K. admit to feeling lonely. Loneliness and social isolation are two of the most severe epidemics in the world today. Reverse the trend by helping others. • Increases Socializing – Social interaction improves mental and physical health. • Builds Bonds – People develop closer relationships, better connections, and more powerful attachments to people when they work together. • Develops Emotional Stability – When people with OCD, PTSD, or anger management issues volunteer, they feel more connected to others. • Improves Self-Esteem – When teens or young adults volunteer, they develop selfesteem, confidence, and feelings of self-worth. • Promotes Longevity – Long-term volunteers have longer lives and better overall health. • Reduces Risk of Alzheimer’s – Any social interaction can help delay or prevent this disease. • Helps Those Most Affected By Mental Illness – Volunteering reduces stress and improves well-being. It also keeps us young. • Leads to Graceful Aging – Older volunteers benefit the most from getting out of the house, engaging with others, and moving physically. • Develops Corporate Communities – Corporate philanthropy creates employee volunteer programs to help their philanthropic efforts and to retain employees. • Adds Joy to Your Day – The best part, and often overlooked, is that volunteering is just plain fun. So, while we all anxiously look forward to the day when riding in the elevator with another person is not considered violating one of God’s 10 Commandments, and when we can get back to gathering at work, at home, and on vacation, and when going to see a movie is no longer part of your bucket list, let’s also look forward to starting or getting back to volunteering. As so many people in our industry already know, it’s good for others and it’s good for you. Tony Ramos tramos@peninsula-media.com

Harold Hudson

I would like to start by saying

how honored I am to be serving as Chairman of ICFA. I just started my 29th year in this industry and to see the changes confirms my thought that the outdoor industry has some of best manufacturers, product designers, and retailers than many of the other home furnishings businesses. And to see how manufacturers have changed their factory base and how retail has evolved from brick-and-mortar, e-commerce, and master retailers to where it is today is exciting. With the times of business closings and store shutdowns mandated during the pandemic in the rearview mirror, the outdoor furnishings industry entered 2021 chomping at the bit to satisfy the anticipated demand from huge numbers of consumers planning to invest in their outside living spaces. Indeed, research conducted by the International Casual Furnishings Association in January reports that 90 percent of Americans consider their outdoor living space as “more valuable than ever before” and 58 percent of those surveyed plan to purchase outdoor furniture and accessories this year. From a simple refresh of upgrades to an entirely new setup of seating and dining groups and transformations of patios to outdoor rooms, shoppers are being welcomed by dealers dedicated to providing a totally safe in-store shopping experience or, for those who prefer armchair shopping, a robust online buying experience. And that’s where the ICFA comes in as a business resource to support retailers with educational and networking activities as well as discount programs to offset operational costs. Helping our retailer members restore their level of pre-COVID activity is my top priority as this year’s chairman of the board of ICFA. My entire 29 years in this industry has been spent at Summer Classics, where

our hybrid business model gives me a unique perspective on the relationship between manufacturers and retailers. I understand the challenges facing both in the best of times. In 2020, like all the other brick-and-mortar retailers, our sales were impacted by the pandemic. Our companyowned and licensed stores have maintained their recovery by implementing best practices, including ongoing education and receptiveness to change. The strategic initiatives pursued by ICFA in the coming two years will promote recovery and compel more retailers to join as they recognize the value of this dedicated support. We’ll continue to create and enhance the networking, educational, and philanthropic opportunities that make the ICFA so vital to professional success for every segment of our membership. Well-trained, highly effective sales teams are crucial to any retailer’s success. The ICFA recently conducted a survey that indicated this is a concern and area for improvement across our membership. This year, we have started the groundwork of developing training specifically tailored for casual furnishings sales associates. This will be a valuable tool for orienting new associates and will serve as a refresher course for experienced salespeople whose skills may have become rusty during the slowdowns. Since 2017, ICFA has earned high marks for its annual Educational Conference. Although our 2021 event was canceled, we’ll more than make up for it with “Innovate and Elevate” scheduled for February 14-17, 2022, at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Orlando. Anyone who participated in the four previous educational conferences will agree that you don’t want to miss the world-class speakers, exceptional workshops, and fabulous social events. The pandemic drastically limited our inperson meetings, and we will be so grateful for the opportunity to mix and mingle when we can get back together. I have countless examples of quiet moments of connection during ICFA events that resulted in longstanding relationships and close friendships. Whether it’s working out issues with vendors or sharing business concerns with peers, you can’t replicate the impact of those real-life meetings over the phone or through emails. I very much appreciate everything that theMART team is doing to provide a safe, healthy setting at the Merchandise Mart

in Chicago for the ICFA Preview Show on July 20-22 and Casual Market Chicago on September 21-24. The ICFA Retail Council is moving forward with plans for its annual afternoon seminar and networking session on September 20, the day before the official opening. And on the 21st, marketgoers are invited to arrive early for the ICFA Trends Seminar at Marshall’s Landing and the grand staircase in the lobby of theMART for an advance look at color directions for 2022 and the newest outdoor fabrics. I recognize that there will be changes in the way we gather, but I look forward to being together with industry peers. In the meantime, however, we’re making the most of educational webinars on topics designed to lift a dealer’s bottom line, scheduled on the third Wednesday of each month. Work is also underway to populate the ICFA website with detailed information about all of the programs— credit card processing, in-store financing, discounted office supplies and printing services, telephone systems and more— aimed at saving members money while building business. Often, troubled times lead to a rise in charitable activity, and I am proud at how ICFA members are supporting City of Hope, a research and teaching institution selected as our philanthropic partner in 2017. Two years ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Los Angeles-area campus. Until then, I didn’t grasp the enormous reach of this renowned hospital whose research and treatment protocols advance care for those who have cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. I saw firsthand the miracles they are achieving and the impact they are making in the medical world. I don’t think there’s any question that an ICFA membership is vital to every meaningful outdoor furnishings business, and I personally invite any interested company to contact Executive Director Jackie Hirschhaut at Jackie@ICFAnet.org or (336) 881-1016 to learn more. And if you want to compare notes on my favorite ‘Bama football team, stop by the Summer Classics showroom and ask for me!

industry news SCHOTT ROBAX Unveils New Innovative Pellet Stoves Pellet stoves are a popular alternative to wood-fired ovens because of their ease-of-use. The downside is that the display of flames in a pellet stove is somewhat different from the romantic flames in a wood fire. And when the stove is not in use, a transparent panel provides an open view of a dirty technical interior brimming with soot. Manufacturers have typically countered with complex double-glazing consisting of a fireviewing panel and a tinted front panel. SCHOTT ROBAX NightView now banishes this complex and bulky multi-panel construction to the past. When heating, the translucent-black glass-ceramic creates novel visual effects: The flames seem calmer and have a naturally warm color. At the same time,

SCHOTT ROBAX NightView pellet stove

when the stove is not in use, the tinted fire-viewing panel conceals the combustion chamber, and the dark, gleaming facade blends into any room. Pellet stoves are thus elegant design elements for homes year-round. For stove manufacturers, ROBAX NightView

means easier installation, cost savings, and opportunities for differentiation. This innovation from SCHOTT makes double-glazed glass-ceramic fireviewing panels and tinted front panels unnecessary. The 4-millimeter thick, innovative ROBAX panel also unveils new options in design and construction. ROBAX NightView is easily installed into pellet stoves of different sizes and shapes. Pellet stove designers will soon be able to unleash their creativity. Manufacturer La Nordica-Extraflame uses the new product in two of its pellet stoves. “Thanks to ROBAX NightView, our pellet stove Amika shows a unique, very effective flame picture. This innovative glass-ceramic from SCHOTT, developed and tested in cooperation with the LaNordica-Extraflame R&D department, enables us to realize completely new designs.” The project won the German Design Award 2021 in the Excellent Product Design category. SCHOTT ROBAX glass-ceramic has been mass produced for 40 years. SCHOTT, a leading manufacturer, has sold more than 100 million fire-viewing panels. Heat-resistant glass-ceramic is used in transparent form for fire-viewing panels, and as colored glass-ceramic for the inner and outer linings of stoves. Its mechanical, thermal-shock and heat resistance make ROBAX especially durable. The glass-ceramic consists of up to 95% natural raw materials and is RoHs and REACH compliant. All ROBAX production and product-testing processes have been certified by TÜV Hessen.

industry news HPC Acquires Forno de Pizza, a Hybrid Gas/Wood Oven HPC Fire Inspired, the leading gas firepit manufacturer, has acquired all intellectual property, designs, and assets of Forno de Pizza from Grand Haven, Mich. Hugo Laranja, Forno de Pizza’s founder, will join HPC as the business development manager for the HPC Outdoor Cooking Product Line. The Hybrid Gas/Wood is perfect for cooking pizza, grilling, smoking, and baking. The innovative design of the Forno de Pizza oven coupled with HPC ignition technology makes the acquisition for HPC a seamless fit into the company’s product offering. and compact when closed, our umbrellas add a stylish component to any patio without obstructing the flow of the patio or views across the patio,” says Arndt, who also serves as company president. High-quality components result in a higher initial price point, but Arndt stresses that durability naturally leads to lower overall costs for the life of the products. Part of that emphasis on quality is a result of a family-owned and operated workflow where products are designed and built with components sourced entirely from U.S. manufacturers. Arndt and staff are able to quickly react to trends whether they change or hold steady. “Blues and grays continued to be popular in 2020,” she says. “When choosing warmer colors, we saw a trend away from the neutral sands and beiges in favor of more vibrant yellows.” ARTiculatedshade continues to offer three sizes of hexagonal umbrellas—13 feet, 11 feet, and 9 feet—and one rectangular umbrella that is 7 feet by 11.5 feet. “Our commercial sales exceeded retail sales for the first time in 2020,” Arndt adds. “We assume this was due to the increased emphasis on outdoor dining brought on by the pandemic.” CALIFORNIA UMBRELLA California Umbrella (Jurupa Valley) is now offering

a collection of curated acrylic canvas selections under its new Pacifica Premium brand. The brand features 28 fabric options that can be used on all of the company’s 9-foot umbrellas. “This has added about 1,500 cover and frame item combinations to our collection of shade offerings,” says Bryan Sanches, senior vice president. “It’s a huge new introduction of style to our collections.” Within the California Umbrella line (offered by March Products), the patented auto tilt product collection known as the Casa series remains the top seller. Sanches credits the collection’s lower cost, which he says is “much less than competing push-tilt frames and lasts longer, so its value has really become a draw with customers and consumers.” Another subset of customers may seek out products that take an environmentally conscious approach to manufacturing. Sanches goes so far as to call it a trend, and he is responding by using sustainable materials in the construction of the framework. “Frames must hold up to all kinds of weather conditions and harsh usage, but if they fail, the framework is hard to recycle,” he explains. “The sustainable approach ensures that aluminum, for example, is easily

recyclable, or that the component parts can be easily replaced to enhance the longevity of the frame. These have become incredibly important to the value proposition that we offer.” At the high end of the market, cantilever umbrellas remain an important part of the business, but Sanches also maintains that “traditional umbrellas have an incredibly strong base of sales and more opening price points where consumers are entering the market. Consumers continue to require fantastic options that can deliver longevity and great value as they get into the lifestyle and trade up over time.” FRANKFORD UMBRELLAS Customers familiar with Eclipse and Aurora Cantilevers from Frankford Umbrellas (Mount Laurel, N.J.) can now find a new galvanized steel rolling base option for these venerable products. The rolling base also fits the company’s G-Series Greenwich and G-Series Monterey Giant Center Post Umbrellas. According to Laura Dudley, national sales manager, the 36-inch square (0.5-inch high) galvanized steel plate base can be used as a single plate (with G-Series umbrellas) or can be stacked two and three high for use with cantilevers. base weighs between 200 and 600 pounds, depending on whether one, two, or three plates are used. On the aesthetic side, Dudley relies on a Frankford team that continually monitors design trends, both interior and exterior. “We are extremely fortunate to have a fabric partner that listens to our needs, and to the needs of the industry,” she says. “Their ability

exceed all needs and expectations.” Retailers are choosing Frankford for many reasons, including the need to differentiate their product offerings from “big box” stores and online offerings. Dudley acknowledges that some retailers are feeling the pressure from online umbrella competition because of the “ease” of purchasing from big-box websites. “They have seen umbrella sales drop over recent years and are now looking for a product that is not found online everywhere, and a product that is more profitable for them,” she says. “Many retailers are growing tired of suppliers who focus more on big box, making it difficult for FiberBuilt Flight specialty retailers to get Umbrella 28 product. both 9-foot and 7.5-foot octagon sizes. Benjamin Ma, vice president, calls it a “one-of-a-kind design” that makes shade “as easy as a simple slide of the housing that effortlessly tilts the canopy to provide sun protection and comfort.” Top sellers at Treasure Garden continue to be its cantilever umbrellas, particularly the AKZ Plus collection. Other offerings are focusing on nighttime uses, typically a time when umbrellas are tightly closed and/or moved out of the way. With the goal of creating “exciting nighttime party umbrellas,” the 13-foot Starlux AKZ Plus Cantilever features built-in strip lighting in the ribs to illuminate evening relaxation. “In 2021, we introduced the EVO, a state-of-the-art multifunctional outdoor ambiance umbrella light with built-in Bluetooth speakers,” Ma says. “A light-sound accessory in one, the EVO is similar to Treasure Garden’s current Luna, with a twist. The EVO is an umbrella and a table light in one unit, and an integrated bass speaker that provides a crisp surround-sound experience outdoors. This pod can turn any umbrella into its very own entertainment and charging system.” Treasure Garden has several price points in the good, better, best mode, particularly among umbrella selections. “From our residential Treasure Garden 7.5-foot Push Button Tilt market umbrella up to our Jardinico 10-foot by 14-foot Belgium-designed hospitality umbrella, we absolutely cover the spectrum with over 25,000 different umbrella combinations available.” FIBERBUILT UMBRELLAS & CUSHIONS Jordan S. says Corey Lee, senior vice president. “And it is tough to beat in terms of features and value.” In the relatively short time that SunVilla has been in the shade business via its Royal Shade brand, Lee has seen the category expand into the fashion accessory range. Lee keeps an eye on the trend but is keen to stay focused on the “high end construction and materials” that continue to make their way into residential applications. “Especially pool-side, we are seeing a growing market for commercial-grade umbrellas,” she says. “Bigger always seems to be better, and we continue to see that in canopy shape and size. Cantilever umbrellas also continue to perform well as consumers look for flexible shade solutions. Their size and function are perfect for spaces and budgets where permanent structures aren’t an option, and traditional umbrellas don’t provide enough shade.” Price points reside squarely in the middle for SunVilla’s market and offset umbrellas, but different fabric options can open up opportunities for a wider range. Fabric expertise leads to options, as does SunVilla’s extensive background in furniture. Pairings of furniture and umbrellas make for striking visual combinations under the Royal Shade and SunVilla brands. “Umbrellas and furniture can ship direct together, allowing for smaller MOQs and greater flexibility and customization,” Lee explains. “This combination also allows for coordinating collections with fabrics and finishes for both umbrellas and furniture in our Portica line.”

pole and hub,” Beckner explains. “The structural ribs are completely hidden.” FiberBuilt’s Lucaya umbrellas continue to have a strong following, thanks to its one piece, 1.5-inch diameter pole, fiberglass ribs, seven finish colors, and solution-dyed acrylic canopy. Working “in-table” and free-standing, the finish colors coordinate with a wide variety of furniture, with what Beckner describes as “contract quality construction inherent to all the products in our Prestige Collection.” The 9-foot Market umbrellas with crank lift and optional push-button tilt also remain popular. Company-wide confidence in the products extends to a purchase requirement of “at least one, so we can prove how stress-free, accommodating, and service-oriented we are.” Beyond that, there are no minimums. The wide array of shade products are made in the U.S., and Beckner stresses that all those who commit to an order can take comfort that umbrellas and cushions are manufactured in the same facility, so shipping is coordinated. “The more we all spend time outside with our families, the more we recognize how important it is to create a comfortable environment, and shade products are an essential part of that recipe,” Beckner says. “With all due respect to Timbuk 3, the future’s so bright, you gotta sit in the shade.” SUNVILLA CORPORATION Core Market and Offset Umbrella sizes and shapes

Our commitment to inventory and devotion to our quick ship program is second to none, which enables dealers to rely on us to provide their shade products to them in a timely manner.”

“Everything has been some shade of beige/tan for a number of years,” Leisen says. “But now we are seeing a big demand for colorful fabrics such as Aruba, Gingko, and Navy.” Aesthetics have matched function as evidenced by the continuing success of Galtech’s cantilevers, deluxe autotilt umbrellas, and deluxe commercial umbrellas. “The quality and uniqueness of these products has separated

these models from the pack and enabled us to focus on quality-driven products, and not just low-priced items,” Leisen says. “Combined with our very successful quick ship program, we have created a strong demand for these items both at retail and e-commerce.” Like so many of his colleagues, Leisen has increasingly seen customers drawn to large shades, specifically can-

tilever umbrellas. As a result, Galtech’s 13-foot cantilever umbrella has seen strong sales over the past four years. Will that trend continue? Leisen is convinced it will. “As long as seating is the predominant furniture sale over dining sets, we will continue to see the cantilever market grow.” Resisting the urge to diversify has focused the company’s resources, elevating the existing expertise in a calcu-

BAMBRELLA Much has been made of the growing demand for large cantilever umbrellas. Gary Ecoff, president of Bambrella (Deerfield Beach, Florida) acknowledges the phenomenon, while also providing a bit of perspective. “Cantilevers will continue to perform well,” he says. “Consumers love them, and price points are bigger, so it’s a win-win. We will still sell more traditional umbrellas because there are many more sizes available and are still used more often than the cantilever.” Known for its signature use of bamboo, Bambrella is now branching out from the grass-family plant with an aluminum version of the company’s Alize Cabana. The bamboo unit, now a decade in production, continues to do well, but Ecoff reports that a chance to develop an aluminum version emerged and was too good to pass up. For now, Bambrella’s 10-foot round Levante bamboo center pole umbrella remains a top seller. Calling it the “cherry on the top of the sundae,” Ecoff sees all his products as having the ability to provide functionality “to bring your eye down and create the visual ceiling for your outdoor room.” Dealers who display Bambrella products on the showroom floor are aiming for a middle demographic that is not looking for “commodity level” items. “Our products are unique from the solid bamboo product to the aluminum collections,” Ecoff says. “We have a focus on strength and durability with all of our products wind-tunnel tested from 58 mph to 76 mph, but keeping to the medium price point.” TRIVANTAGE Trivantage (Glen Raven, North Carolina) has long made its mark with Solair products that are retractable, either manually or motorized, and that tradition remains strong in 2021.

Solair PS5000 Retractable Awning from Trivantage

The company’s most popular products are the Solair PS5000 and PS2000 retractable awnings, offering a large overhead shade footprint of up to 325 square feet, widths up to 25 feet, and projections up to 13 feet. “The Solair PS5000 is available in four frame colors and six projections,” says Franck Seguin, decorative fabrics and Solair sales manager for Trivantage. “Our entry-level stock offering, the PS2000, comes in three ideal frame widths, a popular white color option, and one 10foot projection.” Popular for decades around the world, Seguin sees retractable awnings increasingly making their way into American homes as a “more permanent, yet retractable” form of solar protection. “The most visible part of an awning is its fabric,” he says. “We offer Sunbrella fabrics which are both design-forward and durable. Homeowners have the opportunity to match or coordinate their outdoor furniture with their awning with the perfect fabric to enhance their patio area.” Trivantage distributes the new Sunbrella Shade Collection featuring contemporary colors and patterns that allow Solair awnings to enhance the latest in outdoor furnishings. “Available exclusively from Trivantage, the new Sunbrella Shade Mayfield Collection is a premium selection of shade fabrics created from 100% Sunbrella acrylic fiber,” Seguin says. “The Mayfield

Collection’s jewel-toned solids add vibrant sophistication to any awning application, while its assortment of multicolor striped styles gives projects a timeless feel.” Solair also developed the Awning Visualizer, a no-cost digital tool designed to help homeowners visualize how an awning would look on their home. Homeowners can upload a photo of their home patio space, or use one of three provided photos, then they select the frame and fabric colors from simple drop-down menus. From there, Seguin explains: “The online Awning Visualizer adds the awning to the image and the homeowner can email it to themselves for future reference. It’s a good way to see different fabric and frame colors next to your home’s cladding, patio materials, and backyard landscaping. It’s also a convenient sales tool for patio stores to show customers how a retractable awning would look next to fabrics they’ve selected for their new existing patio furniture.” INFINITY CANOPY INC. Alan Shargani, founder and CEO of Infinity Canopy Inc. (Los Angeles) does not sugarcoat it when he talks about 2020. In addition to the human toll of the global pandemic, he acknowledges various problems from suppliers, and several projects getting canceled or put on hold—particularly among the commercial installations that favor Infinity Canopy’s modular

system of slide-on wire canopy. “We did do a canopy for Children's Hospital of Atlanta,” Shargani says. “It’s a big outdoor area where patients and their families go to relax. We did a large mall in Ventura County in California called Paseo Nuevo. It's an outdoor mall, and they added canopies both for shade and to elevate the space. We worked with an architecture firm on that project.” Even with the cancellations, 2020 saw financial growth and Infinity Canopy did a bit better than the previous year. “If this pandemic didn't happen, it would have been a much better year.” Infinity’s signature materials have expanded, with Shargani reporting that the company now offers fiberglass and aluminum structures—both prefabricated as well as custom. “We frequently use Sunbrella,” Shargani says. “For us, it doesn't matter as long as the material is outdoor fabric that is going to last. However, we don't use furniture grade because the fabric doesn't really hold itself.” Infinity Canopy recently secured a utility patent for a new type of canopy system that Shargani hopes to launch this year or next. “It's a different kind of a system,” he says. “It's a cantilever retractable frame that is connected to a building. The frame of the canopy comes out of the building like an awning. It pulls the canopy with it, so that's something new. Now that we got it patented, we have to get it into

TUUCI The Shadowworks design and development team at TUUCI (Miami, Florida) is constantly creating and reengineering options on every shade structure. All functional elements of shade, automation, heat, and light are potentially on the drawing board. Recent creations include the Equinox Automated Louvered Roof, a roofing option for the Cabana Collection that controls the angle of the louvers via remote control—fully open for maximum sun or closed for rain protection. Adding to the customizable nature of TUUCI’s parasols, Patrick Troy, executive vice president, reports frame finish options have been expanded with new color assortments coordinated with furniture and design aesthetics. “Our Ocean Master, Max Northstar, allows for detailed customization of the mast on the parasol frames,” Troy says. “This channel and ridge technology was developed with inspiration from techniques traditionally used on wooden yachts. The end result is a mix-materials blend with added visual interest and texture.” TUUCI’s retail and trade showroom partners carry a mix of stock for clients with immediate need, while working as a design resource for clients looking to craft their own product for specific spaces. Experience and customization allow TUUCI to offer what Troy calls, “luxury products with enhancements to truly create an outdoor room with many of the amenities found indoors, while also offering paired down products suitable for more budget conscious projects.” With warranties of 15 years and products in the field far longer, the lifetime investment in quality translates to value for a wide variety of budgets. “The engineering and design team behind each product is unrivaled in the shade space—creating enduring products with an exceptional aesthetic presence,” Troy adds. “Our support team in Miami ensures that each TUUCI client is investing not only in an elevated product, but in an ongoing relationship there to support any future needs.”

ev Hawkins will always be grateful that the fireplace industry found her 17 years ago. Today, she and her husband, Jake, own Fireplace Outfitters (Hailey, Idaho) which offers a full range of premium gas and wood fireplaces, inserts, and stoves. The retailer also supplies products for the outdoor space including grills, furniture, fireplaces, heating, and hot tubs/spas. The store is located just a few miles from the popular ski resort towns of Ketchum and Sun Valley—a high-end market where almost every property has a fireplace. Bev first got her start in the industry in 2004 working in the small town of Grace, Idaho, for a local dealer, Long Bluff Stoves. The owner, Bob Teichert, needed someone to take, package, and ship orders; drive a forklift; order product; process warranty claims; and per-

form a variety of distribution tasks. “It was just Bob and I, and he was usually off snowmobiling, so I was able to learn a lot of things,” she says. She also enjoyed the work and the relationships she built with retailers. After Bob died in a snowmobile accident in 2009, Bev and Jake purchased the business. However, the timing coincided with the Great Recession. “We had put all of Jake’s retirement toward purchasing the business so we decided it might be time to diversify,” Bev says. The decision to branch out from solely being a dealer led the couple to open their first retail store in 2012 in the town of Pocatello, about an hour north. Three years later, the Hawkinses heard about two fireplace dealers who were interested in selling their retail businesses in the Sun Valley area (about three hours

away), and Jake arranged a meeting. “I told Jake he could talk as much as he wanted, but I was not moving.” However, she adds, “After a short road trip to the area, I was sold.” In 2015, the couple purchased one of the existing retail stores and reopened as Fireplace Outfitters. “I still get warm fuzzies thinking how lucky we are to live and work in such a beautiful place,” Bev says. The couple’s individual skill sets and talents balance each other very well. Bev primarily concentrates on the service side of the business. This includes everything from installing gas logs and creating and building fire pits to scrubbing greasy barbecue grills and doing regular calls like replacing blowers, valves, and pilot assemblies. “I love meeting people and working in their homes,” she says.

are grills from Big Green Egg, DCS, and Twin Eagles; furniture from Telescope Casual; outdoor fireplaces from Heat & Glo; and hot tubs/spas from Bullfrog. “We are fortunate enough to sell anything from a gas insert for a 1970s condominium to very upscale and high-end products,” Bev says. Currently, linear gas fireplaces and open wood-burning fireplaces are the most popular in the region, Jake notes. It is definitely an area with a mountain modern design influence, he adds. Furthermore, Sun Valley is unique in that the store does not need to offer many design services since most homeowners have an architect, a contractor, and designer. “We go out of our way to have log samples, panel and media samples on display, but typically the homeowner has a person who has a big vision of how the entire project will come together,” Bev says.

Along with the fireplace/firepit category, the store also offers casual furniture, barbecue grills, hot tubs, and spas

Jake, on the other hand, is more business-minded and enjoys the organization and details required to run a successful retail operation, Bev notes, adding that he is an excellent team leader and does just about everything

but service calls. “He’s also pretty great when I need an extra hand lifting fire tables or braking the occasional fitting.” The market for Fireplace Outfitters is diverse, and the store’s wide variety of top name products certainly meets the

needs of its customers. In the indoor fireplace category, this includes: European Home, Mendota, Montigo, Ortal, Heat & Glo, HearthStone, Lopi, Marquis, Pacific Energy, Quadra-Fire, and Stûv. In the outdoor category, there

STAYING IN PLACE When COVID-19 hit, many part-time residents moved into their Sun Valley homes full time deciding to live in the area permanently. This has led to an increase in home renovations, both indoor and out. In fact, some contractors are booked-out for several years,

Fireplace Outfitters serves a booming market where almost every home has at least one fireplace

Bev explains. In addition, even before the pandemic hit, the new home construction market in Sun Valley was already booming. Now, she adds, “It’s exploding.” All these renovations, new construction, and service needs translates into a full plate of business for Fireplace Outfitters. “This has caused a great deal of activity for us since we are a ski town

and most homes and condos have at least one fireplace. A house I was in the other day had 10,” Bev says. The store runs two installation crews with contractors taking care of framing and finishing the fireplace. Another crew of technicians completes service and repair on all products. “I can’t say enough about all the people who work for us, and I am

happy for all our crew to proudly wear Fireplace Outfitters gear,” Bev says. “Our staff is very honest, reliable, clean, and professional; I’m honored to say I work with them.” Due to the emphasis on ways to safely meet with friends and family during the pandemic, Fireplace Outfitters has experienced exponential growth in products in the outdoor segment, such as fire pits, fireplaces, and heating. “People are looking for a safe way to gather outdoors,” Bev says. “Our customers are happy when they are shopping for a spa, barbecue, fire pit, or beautiful pieces of patio furniture which will improve an outdoor space.” While these items may not be a necessity, they bring comfort in a home and are products people really want, Jake adds. The showroom is about 3,600 square feet with half dedicated to hearth and the other half to the store’s remaining product lines. Bev’s dream would be to have about 10 times the space, so she could really have fun with displays. “I want to offer a space where people can come in and enjoy a product while envision-

ing it in their own home.” Jake adds, “Our biggest challenge is offering great displays, which adequately represent all the options we have, without overcrowding the showroom.” The store’s best methods of advertising are direct, simple, and costeffective. Since the area and population are small, Jake notes that Fireplace Outfitters’ vehicles are one of its best assets. “We have enough of them running around that you can’t miss them.” Bev agrees that the decals on the store’s trucks are a good source of advertising and adds, “We take great care of people, and in a town as small as ours, word-of-mouth is the best source of advertising.” Most importantly, the store’s success is a result of the solid reputation the business has built in the community. “Everyone who represents Fireplace Outfitters works as if the company is their own,” Bev says. Jake couldn’t agree more: “Our people make all the difference. They truly take ownership of what they do, and I am always amazed by the number of positive emails and notes we receive from clients about our employees.”

ld school service is alive and well at Grills of Mississippi (Ridgeland, Mississippi). “When you stop working to make money and just focus on helping people—that’s when the money comes,” says owner Jonathan Huddleston. The dynamic retail operation is run by longtime friends Huddleston and Tracy Hopson, who took their hobby and passion for competitive barbecuing and translated it into a thriving business. Over the past year, the store has enjoyed record sales by being flexible, taking advantage of opportunities, and not being afraid to take risks. When one first walks into Grills of Mississippi, it has a different feel than a typical barbecue supply store—it’s a one-stop shop with an unexpected level of service. “The soul of our business is about cooking food that tastes good, so everything we sell is geared toward that end,” Huddleston says. The store has everything from a thoughtful selection of the best smokers and grills on the market to specialty charcoal, premium pellets, wood chips, and accessories. It even has a full-service catering business, meat market, and cooking classes. One truly unique offering that sets it apart is an impressive selection of local and competition rubs and seasonings—700 choices to be exact—that are created in small batches by cooks from across the country. “Each one has a special story behind it,” Huddleston says. People travel to the shop from all over Mississippi to get grilling tips, share recipes, and chat with the local

celebrity barbecue duo Huddleston/Hopson, who are eager to share their expertise. “Barbecue is the glue to a happy home, in my opinion. I’ve seen it bring families together.” Huddleston started the business in 2013 as a website that featured local competition rubs made by his fellow competitors on the barbecue circuit. “Grilling is a hobby for them and selling their homemade rubs provides the extra cash they need to pay for expenses. The website gives them an avenue to sell to the general public.” The site became an immediate hit because it opened the door to an untapped market. In 2015, after a few years of increasing success, a pellet grill

company offered to sponsor Huddleston—and Grills of Mississippi was born. Talk of the unique new store spread quickly because it was the first pellet grill retailer in the area. “Many people had never even heard of pellet grills before, so it was a whole new concept,” Huddleston says. It steadily gained a loyal following of both curious newbies and seasoned cooks looking for new ideas and products. Today, the store carries a wide spectrum of smokers and grills from Yoder Smokers, Primo Grills and Smokers, Weber, Pit Barrel Cooker Co., Memphis Wood Fire Grills, Napoleon Grills, and Green Mountain Grills.

“I think the biggest factor contributing to our success is that we are two honest guys who just want customers to make the right purchases,” Huddleston says. “They sense our sincerity, so even if they don’t buy a grill from us, they’ll come back to get cooking advice and to purchase all their supplies. When you build that kind of rapport, you have customers for life.” In 2019, Huddleston took a leap of faith when he moved the store from its 1,300-square-foot location into a brand-new stand-alone building. The showroom quadrupled in size to 6,000 square feet with plenty of room for a kitchen (for cooking classes) and a larger area to better showcase products. Huddleston, his wife Lacey, and the whole family have joined in to work at the store. “Our future was wide open at that point—then the pandemic hit. I remember wondering what was going to happen next, but we didn’t sit around worrying—we took action.” He started looking for opportunities to bring in income. Fortunately, the store qualified as an essential business because it has a catering operation—and the store took full advantage of the opportunity. All the area restaurants were forced to close their doors, so Huddleston spread the word about Grills of Mississippi. “The first week, we cooked 235 racks of ribs and 160 pork butts and 450 1-quart containers of side items that people picked up curbside,” he says, adding that it not only brought in income, but it also raised awareness of the new store location and catering service. “Many of the people who stopped by to pick up food were first-timers, because our current customers already had grills and knew how to cook.” The fact

that everyone was unexpectedly forced to cook at home also meant they needed to update or buy new grills—which was good news for Grills of Mississippi. “It has been hard to keep product in stock. We sold our entire spring inventory of 200 pellet grills in 30 days, our outdoor kitchen sales have tripled, and there are no signs of slowing.” The pandemic also pushed the store’s meat market business into overdrive. With restaurants not needing to purchase food, their grocery suppliers were stuck with an abundance of excess meat. Huddleston approached the suppliers and made a deal to purchase the inventory at a deep discount. In turn, the store was able to sell the meat to its customers for rock-bottom prices. This opened up a whole new avenue for income in fresh-cut meat. “We hand cut everything, package it and put it in a self-serve refrigerator on our showroom floor, just like a grocery store.” Always thinking two steps ahead during the pandemic, Huddleston started ordering extra inventory at the end of the summer. “I saw supply and demand issues coming, so we started ordering extra stuff— grill tools, sauces, and rubs—basically filling our warehouse. We knew this decision was either going to make us or break us, but we were willing to take that risk. We were determined to do everything possible mentally, physically, and financially to prepare for Christmas.” It paid off big time. December turned out to be the store’s most profitable month on record. Internet business tripled because Grills of Mississippi had product in stock that other retailers didn’t. “Social media played a big part in that growth because people were posting pictures of themselves cooking with hot new rubs and tagging Grills of Mississippi. All the exposure has helped expand our reach across the country, so now we are shipping our rubs, sauces, pepper jellies, and grill tools everywhere.” With all that went on in 2020, word of mouth and social media proved to be the best advertising for the store’s first year in its new location. “The exposure we got from the grassroots level was nothing we ever expected.” The store’s customer base is still growing exponentially. “People want to support us because we are a small business that’s part of the backbone of our community. I think they appreciate that fact more than ever before after seeing many small retailers go out of business during the pandemic.” Huddleston explains that one of his top goals for 2021 is to increase the focus on website sales. “There is going to be a lot more stay-at-home website shopping, so I am preparing to spend a huge percentage of my profits to go nationwide. The rubs we sell on our site have been the gateway to introduce people from all over the United States to our store.” Grills of Mississippi has managed to make the most of the situation with the pandemic and learned a lot about itself in process. “There have been many unexpected positives of which we are very thankful,” Huddleston says. “With all the ups and downs of quarantine, we feel like we have managed to come out the other end with strength and a future we never anticipated. We have been blessed.”

or so many, 2020 was full of challenges personally and professionally. However, with the focus on the home, the casual category also experienced tremendous opportunities, many of which are poised to continue into 2021. For one casual retail leader, 2021 will not only be a time of capturing sales opportunities, but also celebrating a rarely achieved business milestone. Leaders, headquartered in Largo, Florida, is set to mark its 50th year. This industry giant, previously known as Leaders Casual Furniture, will tap this positive outlook and execute a challenge-busting mission. In the past half-century, many familyowned businesses in the casual category have come and gone, but Leaders has prevailed and has a dynamic story to tell.

A laser-focused approach to product sourcing and internal manufacturing has contributed to Leaders’ success

With 19 locations across Florida, Leaders is recognized as one of the country’s top outdoor furniture chains

“Over our 50-year history, challenges have occurred,” said Tim Newton, president and son of the previous president and principal, Jerry Newton. “Throughout, though, we have continued to grow by staying focused on priorities such as embracing change while being decisive and disciplined in our business processes. We also continue to remain obsessed on the customer experience by creating an empowered culture that includes everyone on our team.” Launched in 1971 from a small showroom in St. Petersburg, Leaders has grown into an award-winning casual furnishing retailing success story. Under the guidance of Jerry and Linda Newton, Leaders beat the family-owned business odds. Today, Leaders flourishes with 19 locations across Florida. But the company is not satisfied with resting on its laurels. Each location continues to grow, and additional locations and remodels are on the drawing board to debut this year. The Leaders’ mission of “A Happy Customer the First Time” has been instrumental in the decades of growth realized and the continuing success planned. Tim Newton is proud of the commitment each member of his team has to this customer-centric mission. Organizationally, the company also embraces an additional mission of providing a great place to work. Newton believes it is fundamental to the company’s competitive advantages. This team philosophy has been one secret to Leaders’ ability to successfully navigate the dynamics that come within a family business. Newton, along with his wife, Ashley, Leaders’ executive vice president, believe in treating

everyone the same. The company understanding is that all team members are measured on their contribution to the organization, not on their relationships or tenure. Within a family-owned business, however, successful succession planning is always a consideration. It is one that this company navigated successfully 14 years ago with Tim and Ashley taking over the reins from his parents. The generational execution of Leaders’ mission is attributed to an ongoing emphasis on technology. The importance of technology within the retailer’s business model can be traced to Jerry Newton and his experience in the tech sector. This focus continues to be a major element in all daily operations. “We have always been interested in the benefits of technology,” Newton says. “We recently switched our ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system. “It is the core system that runs the business and streamlines processes. It has enabled our teams to see their job more clearly though a visually rich interface.” A warehouse management

than we were in 2007.” Leaders is proud of its current efficiency. Newton measures this by dividing the total hours worked by all team members by the total dollars delivered over the same period. With this calibration, a very positive model is being realized companywide. “A more efficient organization can exceed customer expectations and gain market share while increasing team member satisfaction,” Newton says. “We are proud of how our empowered culture focused on winning as a team.” This culture is evident with the addition of each of the locations that have occurred over the past 50 years. This is a feat few specialty retailers realize; but for Leaders, with each opening, there have been lessons learned. You need robust supply chain management to maximize your accuracy, investment, and customer-facing communication.” The added challenge of working in the outdoor category required Leaders to examine prospective supplier proficiency in technical knowledge and understanding of the quality and durability of items produced before being exposed by real experience in the field. Personally, Newton also credits successful sourcing with a combination of respect for the factory, their internal teams, and the desire to win along with a humility and desire to never stop learning. During the recent pandemic, the surge in popularity of the casual segment has been puzzling but welcome. For Newton, the reason is clear. “Prior to lockdowns, individuals were focused on lives driven by experiences. Those experiences were centered around such elements as travel and resort living. During COVID, we became refocused on the home and the desire to create resort-like

experiences in our own backyards.” Leaders benefited from the surge in interest and sought to deliver experiences efficiently. This positive business atmosphere, occurring as Leaders celebrates the halfcentury mark, contributed to Leaders’ plans to complete the rollout of its total rebranding. The casual retailing chain also is actively working on remodeling and growth. As the celebration continues, Newton plans for Leaders to stay focused on its goals and the mission of improving the brand while exceeding customer expectations. “I see nothing more important than the customer experience,” Newton says. “Whether it be empowering our team members or implementing focused technology, everything we are planning for the next 50 years is to improve upon our mission of ‘A Happy Customer the First Time.’” With a keen business sense, a respect for technology, and a rich legacy built on family values and a strong work ethic, Leaders is dedicated to its mission now and in the future.

Ratana’s collections are perfect for customers who use outdoor spaces for everyday living. BY SHARON SANDERS

navigating through our business challenges. There are so many industries that are still having a tough time (airlines, hotels, restaurants), and we feel fortunate to have fared so well. For a while, we weren’t sure when business was going to start back up again, but once it did get going, we had good momentum to finish out the year, thanks to the support of our customers. We spent the latter part of the year making plans for a robust 2021, taking measures to minimize disruptions retailers could encounter as they are getting back on their feet again.

Lawrence Wong

Ratana is known for its timeless design, exceptional quality, and a close connection with its specialty retail customers. This year, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based company is showing its strengths in a whole new way as it offers durable, stylish furniture people need to create outdoor spaces that go beyond relaxation and into everyday living. Patio & Hearth Products Report spent some time with Lawrence Wong, sales manager, U.S., to find out how Ratana is moving forward in 2021. What is the latest news from Ratana? Wong: It’s a good time to reflect and be thankful for where we are right now as a company. Through the pandemic, we were able to stay safe and healthy while

42 PATIOANDHEARTHPRODUCTSREPORT.COM

What do you see as your biggest recent successes? Wong: Our products have been a good match for what the market has been asking for over the past few years. We have been working with our suppliers to bring in new materials, which have led to innovative, fresh design that our retailers and designers show well. Even before the pandemic, we were seeing a growing trend of people extending their living rooms from indoors to outdoors. Our new soft, textured fabrics are the perfect solution because they bring the same comfort as something one would find indoors. Comfort is more important than ever because people are spending time outside for everyday living, not just leisure. Has the pandemic affected outdoor furniture purchases? Wong: People are doing less big-box shopping because they want durable outdoor furniture that will last for more than just one season. In the foreseeable future, I think people will continue to feel more comfortable

outside, so having a space that is an extension of your indoor living is going to be more of a necessity than it ever has been. People are starting to realize that there are plenty of quality products available to create an outdoor room that has all the comforts of the indoors. What is Ratana’s niche in the outdoor furniture market? Wong: Our warehouse program has always been our standout advantage. It allows us to customize our cushions with a wide selection of stock fabrics and ship in a short timeframe. People are looking for flexible options because there is so much uncertainty in the market right now, and our warehouse program is the perfect solution. Another advantage is our focus on design. People today have high expectations when it comes to design—they want furniture that is as sophisticated as something they would put in their home. Our team of designers develop all of our furniture with that expectation in mind. We have an array of collections in every style—from traditional to transitional and modern—that have the indoor look and feel people are looking for. What outdoor living trends are you seeing? Wong: Outdoor spaces have become more deliberate and planned—not just an afterthought. Architects are specifying outdoor living spaces in their blueprints that include covered areas for shade, barbecue islands,

as i see it and fireplaces. This trend even includes townhouses in urban areas that designate rooftop space for outdoor living. We are seeing the change across the country as well, not just in warm weather areas. Customers in the Northeast are outfitting covered outdoor areas with heaters and fire pits so they can spend time outside, even when temperatures drop in the fall and winter. Did the company make any changes in response to the pandemic? Wong: Customer connection is very much a part of who we are as a company. This past year, we went to extra lengths to stay in touch with specialty retailers through video conferencing or just a simple telephone call. It’s been beneficial because it has helped us see, firsthand, how they are really doing. We felt like we went through the ups and downs together and could relate to one another as everything unfolded. We received an overwhelming response of thanks from our customers and plan to continue working together this way as much as possible into 2021 and beyond. What Ratana outdoor furniture collections/pieces are you most excited about for 2021? Wong: We are really excited about our new collections for 2021: Diva, Poinciana, Cubo, Biltmore, Roca, and Coco Rico. Our owners and management insisted that we launch our full scale of six collections because

they want to send the message that Ratana is moving forward and that 2021 is going to be a better year. We want to give specialty retailers something new and exciting for their showroom floors. We’re lucky that all of our furniture is versatile, which has been a great solution during the pandemic. For example, Biltmore our basic L-shaped sectionals can be pulled apart to create three separate sofa areas as a way to social distance. Our Roca footstool can be used as a lightweight, moveable seating option that can be positioned anywhere in a space. It’s been an interesting journey that is causing people to be creative with the way they use furniture. I think this is a trend that’s here to stay and something we will focus on as a manufacturer as we create new products. How is Ratana planning to partner with specialty retailers this year? Wong: We took a hard look at what we could do differently this year and decided that good communication is what’s needed most. We have built great relationships with our specialty retailers over the years, and we will continue to communicate closely with them. We are going to invest heavily in our warehouse program in 2021—it may not be different than what we’ve done in the past, but it’s needed now more than ever.

We’ll also promote the fact that we have flexible options when it comes to lead times and delivery times. At Ratana, we know there are going to be challenges and uncertainties in the future, but there will be opportunities as well. Over the last 13 months, the industry has made it through a lot, so we know together we can overcome any obstacles. What do you think 2021 holds for the outdoor living industry? Wong: We are optimistic for 2021. Even with a COVID vaccine, there will still be people who will forgo events, gatherings, and be reluctant to travel, which means they will still be staying home more. In the latter half of 2020, many people shifted their spending to home renovation and we see this trend continuing—which brings unlimited opportunity for the outdoor living industry. Our focus is to work closely with retailers to get the right products into people’s outdoor spaces at the right time.

OutdoorVerve Outdura’s fashion-forward fabrics optimize open-air living.

Starry Night

Ahh, spring and summer. It’s that time of year when decks, patios, and porches become homeowners’ sanctuaries—prime spots to relax or entertain. These outdoor living spaces are essentially extensions of consumers’ homes. And as consumers look to enhance their outdoor areas, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, they are turning to Outdura for a plethora of fabric options to make their outdoor spaces truly shine. Because of the extra use these outdoor living spaces are likely to get, durability will be as important as looking beautiful and being comfortable. Outdura can certainly answer all those needs for fabric selection. When it comes to outdoor textiles, the late 1990s saw the introduction of the popular Outdura brand, which has been a trusted supplier in the solutiondyed acrylic performance fabric category for more than 30 years. While the Outdura brand was initially launched by Shuford Mills, the brand and the historic 1904 mill where the company’s product is made was purchased by Sattler AG in 2010. It will be accompanied by the Ovation 4 brochure, which is a great tool for retail sales associates to use to guide their customers on fabric selections that coordinate. Outdura will make this available for retailers as they have in the past with the Ovation 3, which is still an active program, as well. While performance issues are top of mind for interior fabric consumers, outdoor fabrics need to exude exceptional durability. Luckily, gone are the days of all performance fabrics looking “commercial or medical” in nature. And consumers are no longer selecting fabric purely based on looks and colors. environments opens up new options for living space and increases the livable square footage of their home. In addition, many of today’s consumers are requesting fabrics that resist damage from sunlight, mildew, rot, and atmospheric chemicals, yet are soft and breathable for complete comfort. Outdura’s bestselling colors continue to be neutrals, but they have seen a shift in focus. “Our whiter whites are more popular right now than the softer ivory and off whites,” King says. “Grays continue to be important for us and are warmer tones than in the past.” Outdura has also introduced intricate textures on body cloth. Specifically, Outdura’s most popular body cloth introductions are incorporating a unique weave (like the company’s Plateau pattern, which is available in 10 colors) or proprietary yarn (like the company’s Chic pattern, which is available in four colors), as well as Outdura’s bouclé or our marl yarns, which allow for greater depth and feel than a plain weave solid. “As neutrals continue to dominate body cloth

selections, consumers are looking to texture for added interest,” King says. “This trend also matches to the fabrics that consumers are selecting indoors leading to a seamless flow from inside to out.” When it comes to incorporating color within these fabric applications, the blue family is extremely important for Outdura and the outdoor environment. Outdura’s Ovation 4 program leads with two blue color families: Starry Night, a deep blue bordering on navy, and Morning Sky, which features a cooler and softer sky blue and ocean colors. To round out the collection, Ovation 4 includes earthy greens, soft corals, and deeper charcoals, and of course, neutrals that Outdura has packaged as “Warm Winter.” “We see growth for the outdoor living category in 2021 as consumers continue to focus on making the home a place of respite and restoration. This will directly affect the performance fabric market as people start to furnish the outdoor living spaces in the spring,” King says. “While travel may resume later in

2021, we do not see it returning to pre-pandemic levels this year. We also expect outdoor performance fabrics to continue to transition from the outdoors to the indoors as people expect the performance aspects in all parts of their home, especially in high-traffic areas, making homes pet and kid friendly.” Outdura plans to have it all covered with the company’s two active Ovation books: Ovation 3 is in stock now; Ovation 4 will be in stock mid-April. “Supporting those two books, we have Modern Textures available as cut yardage, as well. Modern Textures is a selection of seven of our most popular body fabrics bundled in nine colors each,” King says. “A staple for us and also available as cut yardage are our Upholstery Performance Solids—a collection of 40 popular colors. These four cut yardage programs, which we maintain our stocking levels to suit most quick ship orders, is our direction in support of the casual industry as well as indoor living, and designer and commercial projects.”

Valor G4 Insert

FLAME KEEPERS Valor Fireplaces has kept the home fires burning for generations of homeowners. BY MAURA KELLER

Valor Fireplaces is a family-run business that cares about its dealers and homeowners. In 1984, home heating industry leader Miles Industries obtained the exclusive Canadian distributorship of UK-built Valor products. A mere 17 years later, Miles Industries began manufacturing Valorbranded products in 2001 at a North Vancouver factory. Volume grew and Valor became a household name. Valor has a long history of technological advancements. In 1984, the company produced the first atthe-wall heater-rated fireplace. Valor also pioneered the direct vent fireplace back in 1985, along with the first power-vented fireplace in 1986. Valor’s HeatShift System changed the way linear fireplaces are designed and constructed today. When the

company introduced AutoFire— automatic fine tuning of the fire— they made inserts more efficient. “To this day, we use stainless steel burners, impingement in our radiant fires, adjustable burners, and smart technology,” says Berit Hansen, marketing communications coordinator at Valor Fireplaces. “We pioneered the energy-saving pilot that automatically shuts off when not in use for a period of time. Saving energy is a key principle that drives the design and engineering of each and every Valor fireplace.” Today’s homeowners experience Valor Fireplaces’ keen focus on the details that make the company’s products truly stand out. The details Valor puts into its fireplaces include realistic-looking logs, powder-coated

steel fronts, extra strong ceramic glass, and most importantly, the radiant warmth of our fireplaces. “In fact, many Valor customers have owned more than one Valor in a lifetime—an expression of their commitment to our product and service over several decades,” Hansen says. “Homeowners depend on our fireplaces because they don’t require electricity to run, so even in a bad storm, they still have the heat and glow of their Valor. Our dealers tell us that they feel good about selling a Valor because we stand behind our product. Dealers feel comfortable giving us feedback that we use to continually improve our product and service.” Because exceptional manufacturing techniques is top of mind at Miles Industries, the Miles’ manufacturing plant has been certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) since 2002. The company’s CSA-certified product engineering lab is well equipped and has played a key role in successfully designing and launching a full range of gas fireplace products, including the company’s best-selling Legend G3 Insert Series. Throughout its long history, the team at Valor has researched, developed, and perfected radiant heat technology in its fireplace product lines. Recently, Valor has been working on introducing new products that will be unveiled in June. Among other upgrades and innovations, the newest Valor products will include a

taller linear fireplace and an upgraded insert fireplace lineup. “As well, we continue to implement our latest VClass burner that includes the popular birch logs, among other updates,” Hansen says. The Valor Fireplace team continues to focus on enhancing key features that can be found on its existing product lines, which are favorites among homeowners. “These features are as important to us now as they have always been,” Hansen says. Unique features that have inherently earned Valor Fireplaces accolades aplenty include radiant warmth, AutoFire, and a secondary heat exchanger. In fact, Valor’s radiant warmth technology—a key feature of every Valor gas fireplace—means that Valor fireplaces emit heat through its glass, while spreading warmth that is absorbed by people, furniture, and objects within a room, rather than simply ushering warm air into a room, without heating objects. In addition, as consumers focus on green initiatives, Valor Fireplaces’ radiant heat technology is appealing because radiant heat uses up to 25% less energy compared to traditional forced air systems. And, with zone heating, you can heat the part of your home you use most, saving you money while improving comfort. HOME COMFORT Due to the ongoing pandemic, today’s homeowners are spending more time

product innovation in their homes. As such, home comfort is more important than ever. In response to this growing consumer interest, Valor Fireplaces has also seen an increased interest in renovations where a fireplace insert such as the company’s G Series, or other smaller ZC fireplaces—the Horizon, H3 and H4—are a perfect fit. Today’s consumers are drawn to inserts because they offer a lower cost option when compared to replacing an existing masonry fireplace or installing a zeroclearance option. For instance, the company’s G3 Classic offers exceptional quality and value in one. Complete with glowing flames, ceramic logs, non-thermostatic remote control, and radiant warmth, the Classic offers a simplified, clean design and is priced to compete. And Valor’s RetroFire Gas Insert is another favorite among consumers looking to turn their existing fireplace into an energy-efficient heat source. The RetroFire insert is designed for installation within a factory-built wood-

burning fireplace as well as within existing masonry. As Hansen explains, Valor Fireplaces’ fireplace inserts, in particular, are a great price and fit when consumers want to preserve their existing fireplace and surround. “The modern homeowner wants to replace their unsealed, inefficient wood-burning fireplaces with a safely sealed, efficient gas fireplace,” he says. “That’s where the real comfort happens: When homeowners feel both the radiant and convective warmth of a Valor Fireplace—and never have to chop another piece of wood again.” Natural gas is 100 times cleaner than a traditional wood fireplace because of all the air pollutants a wood fireplace emits. BRIGHT FUTURE In addition to altering consumers’ interest in improving their home environs, the pandemic has also impacted the way many companies are conducting business. Valor Fireplaces has modified the company’s operational strategies in response to changing business

and industry needs. Specifically, Valor Fireplaces’ sales team has embraced online interaction with dealers through Zoom meetings, and they offer safer forms of interactions when possible. In addition, Valor’s head office sees more people working from home part-time or full-time, accommodating the safety protocol of the office. Valor Fireplaces expects to continue its growth with the introduction of new projects mid-year 2021. The company also prides itself on working closely with retailers and dealers to help increase sales of Valor products. In fact, the company considers dealers to be part of the Valor family, and it strives to help make selling Valor products an easy process. The company listens closely to dealers, gaining key feedback that is used to con-

tinually evolve and shape internal processes, including fireplace setup guides and installation mechanics. In addition, the company offers a fireplace and lifestyle blog that dealers can share with consumers to help them identify the ideal fireplace as well as to stay abreast of trends within the industry. “Valor offers a variety of programs tailored to the unique needs of our dealers. We provide everything from in-house training to freight incentives,” Hansen says. “Our burn credit program is quite popular as is our co-op advertising, where we offer in-house solutions to our dealers’ advertising requests. We’re always thinking of new ways to support our dealers and welcome dealer feedback.”

experience of the EGG naturally centers around people gathering. “And people still have an innate need to be together and share good times with each other to create memories—even if we can’t do it in such large groups these days.” People are pursuing new hobbies and interests more than ever before, like baking, photography, embroidery, and exercise. Families are also making more home-cooked meals on a regular basis. “People have the available time to explore new ways to cook

MiniMax Egg

to add variety to their meals, and the versatility of the EGG fits very well with that,” Burson says. For abundant reasons, including a lifetime warranty, versatility, and the ability to consistently deliver delicious food, the Big Green Egg has always been a good investment. In fact, Burson notes, the EGG is the last grill anyone will ever need to buy. She also believes since people are saving money by not dining out, they are embracing the opportunity to acquire a quality product that can be used every day at home for years to come. Furthermore, the EGG is as equally efficient and versatile in the winter as it is in the summer. “EGG users don’t have a grilling season— they grill all year round.” Available in seven grill sizes from XL to Mini, there is an EGG sure to meet every need. The Large EGG still retains its ranking as the most popular size with the XL and MiniMax coming in right behind. “There is a lot of growth in the XL with more people cooking at home for the entire family. The MiniMax is very convenient to use as a second EGG at home, camping, or for a vacation place,” Burson says. While sales of EGG sizes have remained consistent over the past 12 months, the company has seen more interest in its EGGcessories category. This segment continues to expand to bring more enjoyment and versatility to EGG users. For example, a watertight storage cabinet with a shelf that holds charcoal and accessories was recently added to the modular nest expansion system. “People wanted a closed storage area, so this was a natural addition,” Burson says. In general, more people are choosing to place their EGGS in higher-end tables, islands, and modular nests instead of the basic nest unit, she adds. The EGGspander’s popularity continues offering incredible versatility to the EGG cooking experience by giving users accessories such as grids, racks, a pizza stone, wok, and basket. “The EGGspander system enables grillers to enhance their cooking through the use of multi-zone, multi-level cooking,” Burson says. There has been a lot of excitement around using the wok, she adds. “It’s a fun, cooking technique that most people have not tried on an EGG, and is almost impossible to do on a pellet or propane grill.” The company is also putting more of an emphasis on grill-cleaning products with four new items recent-

ly added to help keep any EGG in top shape for a lifetime. Two were added for the exterior of the grill and two for interior grid cleaning maintenance. BGE previously introduced the SpeediClean Palmyra Bristle Long-Handle Grid Scrubbers to safely clean grids and eliminate the possibility of stray metal bristles sticking to the cooking surface.

Big Green Egg is available in seven grill sizes from XL to mini

KEEPING IT FRESH The pioneer in high quality ceramic cooking, Big Green Egg is the largest producer and international distributor of the innovative cooking system. As more competitors have entered the field, the company continues to stay the course on what it does best, Burson notes. “What really sets the EGG apart is that everything has been designed to work together organically using all-natural products—from our charcoal to firestarters —to delivering a live-fire cooking experience without comparison,” Burson says. She adds that the Big Green Egg will continue to do what it has always done since creating the category years ago: Offer the best product with a great breadth of innovative EGGcessories. This approach will ensure that there will continue to be something new, exciting, and different to do on the EGG. “EGG owners look forward to what we will come out with next.” In addition, Big Green Egg is proud of the unmatched customer support it provides to a vast dealer network in over 55 countries. This includes marketing materials, national television advertising, online dealer training, and brand identity kits to help maximize the customer experience on the showroom floor. “When it comes to the competition, we haven’t shifted and will continue to provide the highest quality products coupled with excellent customer support,” Burson says. Early in 2020, Big Green Egg launched an innovative new omni-channel platform to facilitate e-commerce sales that are fulfilled by a dealer in the customer’s community. This e-commerce program was developed, “To be totally inclusive of our dealer network and not sell around them online,” Burson says. BGE developed a mechanism to tie a national online sales platform with local dealer engagement to make it happen locally. Dealers across the country experienced a strong rise in sales; however, in mid-2020 as COVID-19 impacted so many suppliers and inventory levels, the online program was paused. It is now back up and running. “We find people are buying EGGS online, with an added benefit of the program driving traffic to the dealer’s floor,” Burson says. Consumers will often search first online, perhaps choose to make the purchase then, or opt to go to a local dealer to make their final decision. “Either way, online or in-store, our dealers offer white glove delivery and setup service,” she adds. Burson notes there are not many people who purchase an EGG and remain casual users for long. In

fact, with an EGG purchase, the consumer often becomes an avid user and gains a reputation as an excellent griller or chef, depending on how far the owner wants to go with all the EGG has to offer. Generally, she adds, people who buy a Big Green Egg also have a love of learning and trying new cooking

techniques. “This is part of what drives us to constantly develop new accessories, like the EGGspander and the wok, so we can help enhance their cooking techniques and enjoyment of the EGG.” Furthermore, the enthusiasm, fervor, and genuine knowledge Big Green Egg users have is truly remarkable. Burson adds that the EGG has always enjoyed great user support and the company is grateful for the EGG community. EGGheads are very active on various social media platforms sharing recipes, cooking methods, and posting videos of themselves cooking or discussing the EGG’s numerous benefits. “Word-of-mouth advertising, especially in the early days over 45 years ago by our EGG owners, continued on page 96

FlexibleFire Custom Round Fireplace for Dakota Dunes Resort, Whitecap, Saskatchewan

Montigo stays ready to meet any fireplace need. BY KIMBERLY RODGERS

Jonathan Burke, president and CEO of Montigo, is grateful the Canadian-based man-

ufacturer of luxury residential and commercial fireplaces is on the upside of what he identifies as a twospeed economy brought on by the coronavirus. As with most businesses, there were some challenges in the first months of the pandemic while managing certain restrictions and production capabilities at the company’s two manufacturing plants located in British Columbia and Washington, Burke says. However, starting in May 2020 and continuing through today, Montigo has experienced a significant surge in residential fireplace sales. Burke says the company is lucky and happy to be part of the booming economy relating to home renovation and build-

ing supply. “Unfortunately, people in many other industries like restaurants, hotels, and the airlines are in a world of hurt right now. I am hoping everyone will stabilize and get back to normal.” In the early days of stay-at-home orders, when dealers were unable to go into people’s homes, many shifted their sales focus to new home construction. As a result, Montigo saw an increase in the new build segment, Burke says. By mid-summer of 2020, with safety protocols in place, dealers were able to go back into homes and renovation sales began to increase as well. Because there has been so much focus on the outdoor space as a safe way to gather with family and friends, the company also saw a lot of activity in this category, which features a variety of fireplace options for the outdoor room. In addition, Montigo serves a wide range of commercial industries including hospitality, health/wellness, restaurant, education, public spaces, and high-end luxury homes and estates. After some pandemic-related delays in major commercial construction projects, the company is now seeing a steady increase on this side of the business. Burke is also very happy that there have been no COVID-19 cases at either manufac-

turing plant or at the company’s main office in British Columbia. Although the Ferndale, Washington, facility was shut down for one month, Montigo was able to maintain 100% production since the Canadian plant in Langley City remained operational. He attributes this to a certain degree of luck but mostly to the hard work and dedication of Montigo employees. “They put in an incredible amount of effort to follow and sustain all safety protocols,” he says. The company also immediately instituted many significant measures to try and prevent COVID-19 transmission within all its facilities. This includes physical distancing on assembly lines, a mask requirement, and a smartphone app that allows employees to screen themselves daily for symptoms. NEW PRODUCTS In the early 1970s, Montigo’s president and founder, Dan Binzer, started the company based on the principles of innovation and great product design. In fact, Binzer developed the first sand pan log set, resulting in the first zero-clearance gas fireplaces on the market. Decades later, Montigo continues to set the highest standards in the fireplace industry by supplying new and fresh products featuring manufacturing excellence, dramatic design, and technology. The company recently introduced the DelRay Linear to its already impressive linear fireplace catalog. Available in 36- and 48-inch widths, this offering brings the elegance of a linear model at an entry-level price point. The highlight of the weekend was a movie, introduced by founder Ed Fisher, of past EGGtoberfests. “We have images taken at our very first festival, so it was a real walk down memory lane for a lot of us.” The hope is that EGG fans can be together again in person in 2021. Burson comments that there is nothing like walking into an EGGtoberfest and seeing over 200 EGGS going at once, smelling the cornucopia of foods and enjoying the camaraderie of everyone cooking together. “What started as a small group of EGG owners in a parking lot has grown to dozens of similar events around the world,” she says. “These EGGfests are truly spectacles of food and flavor.”

to make its grills easy to use with increased efficiency and precise cooking temperatures. Memphis grills have WiFi capability that, when paired with the Memphis Wood Fire Grills’ app, allows customers to monitor the meat and grill temperature, find recipes, track the history of the cook, and receive notifications such as when their grill reaches its target temperature to their smartphone or other device. Memphis ensures the quality of its grills, pellets, and accessories by designing, engineering, and testing each product in Bloomington, Minnesota. The reliability of their premium pellet grills has been widely recognized and awarded and is frequently listed in the top pellet grills by BBQ sites such as Amazing Ribs. Wagy predicts that the rapid growth of pellet grill sales will continue as more consumers discover the benefits of pellet grills. She also foresees growth in the popularity of built-in models and outdoor kitchens in general, especially as the effects of COVID has many people spending more time at their homes. “Wood-fired grills provide a much bet-

ter and more favorable cooking experience, and our team firmly believes that once you cook with wood, you will never go back to another fuel source.” As Memphis Wood Fire Grills expands its product lines, it is also striving to diversify its network of dealers that is mostly comprised of specialty retailers, BBQ, hearth, and pool/spa dealers. “We are actively looking to expand our distribution through these professional dealerships and offer many dealer programs as incentives to join our team,” Wagy says. “Our goal is to find, train, and support quality specialty dealers to expand our consumer reach.” Wagy notes that the ability to have well-informed dealers is a strong advantage because many people looking to invest in a pellet grill may want to see the grill, discuss its components, and even get a demonstration of how it works before purchasing one. “In addition to expanding our dealerships, we are continually investing in R&D to provide new products and features and to deliver the premier cooking experience for our customers today and long into the future.”

framing depth that allows a very shallow installation, Burke notes. “They are unique in that they work very well in condominiums and smaller spaces, yet they have all the hallmarks of Montigo’s quality reputation.” Both sizes are available in a starter unit or an upgraded model with additional features, including: Invisimesh screen, media-enhancing downlighting, black glass, and a standard circulating fan. “Montigo made its name in the linear space, effectively inventing the category in the 1980s,” Burke says. In winter 2020, Montigo introduced the DelRay Square. A more traditionally oriented fireplace, the line is available in 36-, 38-, 42-, and 46-inch sizes. Different configurations are offered in good, better, best, and deluxe categories. Burke notes the company is starting to see a resurgence in traditional fireplace design. For example, increased requests are being made for traditional log sets to go in its modern semi-custom linear Prodigy series over the contemporary linear burner inset. The new DelRay Square is in response to this interest. The design process for new product development often starts with feedback from Montigo dealers, Burke explains. However, these customer surveys do

more than just determine dealer satisfaction. “We want to glean some insight on where our dealers think the market is headed from a design perspective along with any questions consumers and designers have been asking,” he says. “This is how our creative process for new products really starts—a conversation with dealers, consumers, and professionals asking how we can do things differently.” Montigo’s network includes approximately 400 dealers throughout North America. The numbers are spread evenly between the United States and Canada. Already strong in the Pacific Northwest, West Coast, and the Rocky Mountain states, the company would like to have a greater presence in the East Coast and South. “We would love to expand and welcome new dealers to the Montigo family,” Burke says. FLEXIBILITY A characteristic of Montigo is that it is a small, labor-intensive company. Therefore, Burke says, the company can react quickly to address new changes and

needs in the marketplace. “We always want to do things differently and make our products Montigo special—this is a niche we have created for ourselves in the fireplace industry.” Montigo is often the go-to manufacturer for architects and designers who appreciate the company’s ability to adjust to help them meet the individual needs of their projects. The design market is a big segment of business for Montigo, and it takes a proactive approach to best serve these professionals. “We regularly reach out to the design community to listen and understand what is going on in their world and how we can help them incorporate our fireplaces into their projects,” Burke says. “And we want to do it in a unique Montigo way. This

gives us a competitive advantage.” In fact, Burke notes that Montigo welcomes the times when a dealer, designer, or architect comes to the company with a custom request—such as a unique venting requirement or a special size to fit an unusual space. “These are the kind of situations we love because it gives us a bit of an opportunity to have an edge. We always try to find a way to say yes.” While flexibility is certainly its hallmark, Montigo also maintains a diligent focus to stay ahead of the curve relative to trends and technology in the fireplace industry. This approach, Burke says, ultimately helps Montigo give the end user what they want— which is that wow factor. “People are not buying a fireplace as an appliance, but as a piece of modern art.”
