ISSUE 19 2023/24 MARALA | PROJECT FOX | 25 YEARS OF APPRENTICESHIPS | 5 YEARS OF VILANOVA

WELCOME

We knew that 2023 would be an important year in Pendennis’ story, with it being Pendennis’ 35th anniversary, the 25th anniversary of our apprenticeships and the 5th anniversary of our investment in Vilanova. As well as celebrating our milestone achievements, we were thrilled to be awarded “Best Rebuild” at the World Superyacht Awards for classic Camper & Nicholsons motor yacht Marala – a well-deserved accolade for the entire team involved in her meticulous restoration.

We were also very proud to be chosen as the host venue for the first Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America’s Cup in September. Pendennis Vilanova was selected to serve as the technical area to host the team bases and their AC40s and we were delighted to be able to support the teams in the run up to the America’s Cup Match in Barcelona in 2024.

The whole team is looking forward to the launch of our latest bespoke build, Project Fox – a pocket-sized explorer set for adventure in 2024. Her striking exterior design and unusual equipment carrying capacity make for an exciting proposition in a yacht of her size. We will take on our 350th apprentice this year, and we were recently ranked at number 35 in the UK’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers List 2023. We embrace training as part of the core DNA at Pendennis so it’s incredibly rewarding to be recognised amongst such large employers on that list. We certainly punch well above our weight with regard to our apprenticeship scheme! As we move into 2024 we look forward to sharing our latest news with you, and seeing you at the many events we have planned for the coming year.

REFIT – FALMOUTH

VILANOVA: FIVE YEARS IN

In the spring of this year, Pendennis Vilanova celebrated completing its 300th project. 2023 also marks five years since Pendennis invested into the marina and associated facilities in Spain, and through a programme of strategic investment and the hard work of the 50 plus team on the ground, the business is thriving. We welcomed several yachts to Vilanova for various projects, including:

LIONHEART

We completed the refit of repeat customer 43m J-Class Lionheart Works included painting, teak deck replacement, a new main engine, and a rig service.

SLIPSTREAM

The 60m motor yacht spent the winter of 2021/22 undertaking a large-scale refit at our Falmouth facility, after which the team in Vilanova supported her postCaribbean season with a small scope of maintenance works to ready her for the Med season.

CHRISTOPHER

S/Y Christopher was relaunched in April after spending just over a month out of the water on our hard standing. Here she continued her maintenance works and intermediate Lloyd’s survey, ahead of a busy summer cruising schedule in the Med. Read more on page 26.

TELEOST TURNS 25

M/Y Teleost was redelivered in June of this year, after she arrived in September 2022 for her 25year special survey with Lloyd’s – her fourth visit to Pendennis for refit work. Our team carried out structural repairs, installed a new power generator and management system and worked with interior finishers to give the VIP areas and Master Cabin a new lease of life. In addition, the exterior of the vessel was completely stripped down to facilitate a new paint job. This refit was particularly special as it marked the 25th anniversary of her commissioning at Feadship, and a celebration in the yard with Teleost’s yacht crew and the Pendennis team marked the occasion.

PENDENNIS VILANOVA TO HOST THE AMERICA’S CUP TEAMS

Vilanova i la Geltrú has been announced as the Host Venue for the first Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America’s Cup, with racing to take place over four days between 14-17th September 2023 in the world’s most exciting new foiling class – the AC40. Pendennis Vilanova has been selected to serve as the technical area which will host the team bases and their AC40s.

2023 is a big celebratory year for us – it marks Pendennis’ 35th anniversary and also the fifth anniversary of our investment in Vilanova with our local partners Copisa. As such, it is very fitting that we have been chosen to assist with the America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta and look forward to welcoming the sailors, support teams and spectators in September.

HOW TO COMPLETE AN AWARD-WINNING REBUILD

When the 1930s Camper & Nicholsons motor yacht Marala arrived in Pendennis in 2018, she came with a brief. "When people step on board they’re not to know what’s original and what’s been rebuilt,” the Owner had told the Captain and his team. Marala was to stay true to her original spirit but be built to current standards and class with a modern, easier-to-maintain functionality.

The team quite literally went back to the drawing boards of the late 1920s, referencing the trove of original drawings and blueprints archived at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, UK. “Camper & Nicholsons wrapped up operations around 40 years ago and all their archives were shipped to Greenwich, including several hundred documents and

drawings of Marala,” says Nick Kearton, the project manager of Marala at Pendennis. “We had a lot of information that covered from build right through to the last Camper & Nicholsons refit in the 1960s.”

It was literally a case of peeling back layers of history, tracing a timeline of her evolution from the first sketches drawn up by Camper & Nicholsons for commissioning owner Montague S Napier, an aircraft engine and car manufacturer, and the subsequent 90 years, which included military service during the Second World War and numerous design changes. The excitement was palpable.

“I spent a lot of time with the Captain researching and working, just kind of picking through all the old drawings,” adds Kearton, smiling. >>

“We even received a call from one of our Chairman’s contacts in the Solent, where Marala was built, who had found some original sketches of some interior work done on the boat in the 50s, which nobody knew existed.”

Her rich life’s tapestry was laid out at the shipyard as a patchwork of blueprints, design plans and holiday snapshots of the many, many venerable (and often eccentric) guests she welcomed onboard. Kearton was particularly taken by a photograph of the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí lazing nonchalantly in a steamer chair on the aft deck. “That very same steamer chair is quite clearly still onboard – it’s incredible to see.”

The months of research proved invaluable for interior designer Muza Lab, working out of Notting Hill, London, as they got to work spinning Marala’s illustrious history into a narrative that touches upon the many moments of her life. Despite being the first yacht project for the studio, its portfolio includes the restoration of the Belmond Andean Explorer train and many boutique residences.

Great effort was made to revive the 1930s style and restore original parts and décor wherever possible.

The main deck and Owner’s cabin, for instance, are laid with the original fir flooring that’s been onboard Marala since she made her first splash in 1931.

Where restoration wasn’t possible custom pastiche components were built and fitted, keeping to that all-important brief from the owner. Waxed linen wall panels, patterned carpets, Rubelli fabrics, dyed goat skin furniture coverings and monochrome tiled floors, brushed brass and bold Art Deco fixtures and wall hangings all serve to create the time capsule that is Marala, however between this thick veneer and original riveted steel structure is a strictly 2023 hotel system.

“Installing a modern hotel system into a classic net space was without a doubt the biggest challenge we faced with Marala,” reflects Kearton. “She was designed with passive ventilation: no air conditioning, fresh air make-up, or even any of the lighting and network cabling expected on a modern boat.” On top of that, the black and grey systems running from the cabins were suboptimal and had to be stripped back and replaced with all the necessary systems to domestically serve a cabin. >>

10 MARALA

MODERN TECHNOLOGIES FOR A CLASSIC RESULT

Once Marala was stripped and emptied she was scanned and a 3D model was made for every section of the yacht. The installation of the modern hotel system could then be planned digitally, as the scan paved the way to optimise the net space. Every technical aspect and service detail from the hot and cold piping and the electrical cabling, to the AC, generators and engines was mapped out. It was vital to do so as the available space was so limited and there was a great deal to pack in behind the Pendennis and Norfolk Interior Specialists luxury interior.

3D scanning is an invaluable tool and without it completing such a complex rebuild just wouldn’t be possible to the standard expected. The actual build and reconstruction of Marala may encapsulate the spirit of the 1930s, but getting there required cutting-edge technologies.

11 VOYAGE 2023/24 PENDENNIS.COM

The thorough and extensive research was invaluable for Pendennis and those original blueprints and schematics went much deeper than aesthetics for this rebuild. “From the archival material sourced from Greenwich, we could not only see how she first looked but we could see the original build methodologies used by Camper & Nicholsons,” says Kearton. “Many of these old methodologies aren’t necessarily as sound as newer technologies. During those early days we were continually asking ourselves: how did they originally build it and is it acceptable nowadays with modern standards and class?"

The powertrain is a case in point; from the flywheels of the main engine right down to the propellers, the Mechanical Engineering team reset the original powertrain using modern sealing techniques in the forward section and an antiquated water-cooled system aft in the stern tubes, using lignum vitae bearings. “You do still find the system used very occasionally in some parts of the world, but for the most part using wooden bearings in running tubes hasn’t been done for decades,” says Kearton. “The Pendennis Technical team found a rare supplier in the US that still works with lignum vitae and from our drawings, they custom-built what we needed.” The original methodology for the powertrain might not be commonly used today, but it certainly stood the test of time after 90 years of service onboard Marala

There’s no denying that yachts from the golden age were built to last. “Many ships nowadays are constructed with a 20 to 30-year lifespan in mind and recycling plans are considered from the moment the keel is laid,” reflects Kearton. This is far from the truth with Marala who still had many original parts and components – including her engines and shaft line – when she arrived at Pendennis. This philosophy was very much ingrained in the rebuild and when appropriate and without compromising originality, her design was slightly modified for durability.

“During one of her refits, either in the 50s or 60s, Marala had her original stanchions and rails cut off to be replaced with a flared bulwark around the bow; it was decided to go back to the original stanchion arrangement,” says Kearton. “The original 1930s stanchions would have been mild steel, but Pendennis and the Owner’s team agreed on stainless steel instead as it’s more corrosion resistant and easier to maintain for the crew.”

Stepping on board Marala is a step back in time; she’s a 1930s time capsule with all the modern trappings. A revived 1930s motor yacht rebuilt to last another 90 years.

2 5 YEARS TRAINING THE FUTURE GENERATION

Building for the future isn’t only about innovative technologies, new systems and novel techniques; it’s about training and educating the next generation. So we’re delighted to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of our award-winning apprenticeship scheme, completed by almost 350 men and women, many of whom are still working at our shipyard in Falmouth, with a few now based in our Mediterranean yard: Pendennis Vilanova.

“We punch well above our weight with regard to the apprenticeship scheme and are recognised both nationally and internationally, which makes us all terribly proud,” says Steve Hancock, Training Manager at Pendennis. “I get asked a lot: what’s the secret? And there really isn’t one thing. We’re incredibly passionate, hardworking and inspired to put our stamp on things! Our team of educators is brilliant, and we’ve got our directors' unwavering support and backing. It goes a long way.”

The Pendennis apprenticeship scheme as we know it would not exist if it wasn’t for the efforts of Jill Carr – the instigator and driving force behind the programme.

Although she, along with the team here, developed and improved the course over the years, since its inception in 1998 the essence of the apprenticeship scheme has remained the same: educate and train young people with the skills to build and repair superyachts to an excellent standard whilst helping them develop into well-rounded individuals.

It’s a future-proofing system, and Pendennis projects completed today are more often than not managed and run by our apprentices of yesteryears. “We expect a lot from our apprentices and inspire them to work hard and take pride in their work,” adds Hancock. “We have a bit of a reputation for it too! Colleges can be known to put a little extra pressure on our apprentices because they know the expectations we put on them.”

But the rewards are huge: a great career; work abroad opportunities at Pendennis Vilanova; extracurricular activities such as sailing qualifications and Duke of Edinburgh awards; and a versatile workplace that promotes mobility and further education. “The bottom line for Pendennis is that we’re building our future workforce; we invest a lot in our apprentices and >>

Tim Featherstone-Harvey on an apprenticeship that led to a two-decade career

Q When did you join Pendennis and how was your experience as an apprentice?

A I joined Pendennis in 2004 and was one of the fourth cohort of apprentices. There were 12 of us in total and after nearly 20 years, a number of us are still working at Pendennis. Even during those early years, Pendennis’ apprenticeship scheme had prestige to it and was ‘the one to go for’ – when I was accepted, I felt lucky.

Q Have you noticed many changes to the apprenticeship scheme over the years?

A The changes have been huge and there are many more extracurricular activities on offer today. Vilanova, for instance, is a great opportunity for the right person; a chance to temporarily live in Spain for a few months is relatively new. And there is also more guidance and support for the apprentices on site. It’s great to see how the scheme has evolved.

Q How does Pendennis support education and training after the apprenticeship scheme?

A I now have an apprentice on my team each week and without the skills and experience I developed during my apprenticeship, I wouldn’t be able to deliver the same training. I’m also still training and have just completed my HNC (Higher National Certificate).

Continual learning isn’t uncommon here. If there’s something you want to achieve and learn, Pendennis will support you. I’m incredibly grateful for the training I’ve received at Pendennis.

we support developing their skills,” Hancock continues. “Our graduates get an employment contract upon their completion where they trade their red hard hat for a white one with their name and trade on it. We host a special evening where we can celebrate what they have achieved.”

The scheme is dynamic and has evolved over the years: new courses have been added, and more recently we have led the development of an entirely new Apprenticeship Standard in Yacht Painting & Finishing. “It was a national project, and the new Standard is now ready to be rolled out across the country,” Hancock explains. “It was a challenge as we had to rewrite everything. The rollout of the new Government Apprenticeship Standards called for substantial change and we invested extensively by employing dedicated mentors and by upgrading facilities for on-site training and education. But it was worth it as we’re already seeing the benefits of the change.”

Before the new Standards were rolled out, the first year of a general apprenticeship was much more college-focused, while now they work two days a week on-site and gain much more practical experience as a result. It’s proving a popular change with our apprentices. Also, as higher education looks to develop apprenticeships and what they offer vocationally we have formed a new affiliation with University of Exeter where we are piloting a level seven strategic leadership apprenticeship. It's still early days but it’s a positive step at that level.

Throughout the apprenticeship programmes our young people continue to supplement their personal development through a wide range of extracurricular activities and events, with more being added to the calendar all the time; as well as the sailing and Duke of Edinburgh award our apprentices are ambassadors throughout the local community, representing Pendennis and promoting projects in schools and at exhibitions.

The hard work has recently resulted in the Pendennis apprenticeship scheme being named 35th in the UK Government’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers — a great achievement in the 35th year of Pendennis!

So, what will the next 25 years hold for the Pendennis apprenticeship scheme? “At the moment we’re looking at formalising international placements as part of the fourth year programme" Hancock says. "A number of our apprentices have completed international exchanges and work placements through various connections over the years, but to have a formal and regular arrangement in place would definitely be an exciting development for our scheme, and would give our apprentices an additional target to aim for. We’re always striving to keep our apprenticeship fresh and enable our young people to graduate with the skills they need to be the best. On completion we want them to continue on in their career with us - their journey doesn’t end upon graduating after their four years of training. Our greatest hope is that they will help us complete the cycle both in developing the apprenticeship, and in guiding our next cohort of apprentices.

We’re building our future workforce; we invest a lot in our apprentices and we support them developing their skills.

Q How many students enrol at the college per year because of Pendennis?

A Pendennis usually takes on around 25 apprentices a year through us at Cornwall College.

Q What additional skills does Pendennis teach that make it excel as a programme?

A Within the first year of the apprentices’ journey, the students undertake engineering, electrical and joinery to give them insights into the trades. This allows them to make a good decision about where they are best suited within the company. It also ensures the students are happy with the direction of their decision.

Q Why should a student choose Pendennis over other apprenticeship programmes?

A The Pendennis programme instils an amazing ethos of togetherness for its apprentices. What started as a small family business has grown and continually maintained a family feeling throughout all its employees.

Q How important an education and skills provider is Pendennis for Cornwall?

A Pendennis is incredibly important for education and skills in Cornwall, as the shipyard has provided nearly 350 apprentices with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to become fantastic tradespeople within the sector. This helps grow not only Pendennis, but also the local economy.

Q How does Pendennis support the college?

A Pendennis has always supported Cornwall College. We’ve worked closely together for over 25 years on events, showcasing what we do and what Pendennis offers as an employer. Pendennis’ commitment exemplifies what a brilliant apprenticeship provider it is – and that the blended learning and support it offers is second to none. Every year we support local schools including the high school for girls on International Women In Engineering Day, showcasing what we do as a college within the engineering field. Pendennis supports us with this and sends a number of apprentices to work with us to provide the younger potential students with inspirational talks on careers for the future.

PROJECT

REDEFINING EXPLORATION

At Pendennis, we have a long run of classic rebuild projects, which we are extremely proud of. Preserving and reviving heritage is an art in itself, but the fact that the same team behind these projects are just as able to build a modern pocket explorer yacht makes us prouder still.

Project Fox will join our fleet of unique bespoke-built yachts. We built the world’s largest privately owned sailing catamaran, Hemisphere, in 2011, and one of the hardiest and most instantly recognisable Ice Class explorers, STEEL, in 2009. Each of our sailing yachts built over the past 35 years has been one of a kind, with a special purpose for its Owner. Our approach to building yachts allows us to get under the skin of what our clients really want, and this is the difference between a customised standard design and a fully bespoke project. Having such a varied portfolio of sailing yachts and building them within constrained proportions has often led us to think outside the box and has

certainly thrown a few challenges at us over the years –so we have the benefit of that thinking, plus the passion of our people, all in-house trained in the Pendennis way. When Project Fox came along, there was no doubt that she would be a perfect fit for Pendennis.

“We have a history of owning smaller boats and spending time onboard yachts with family and friends, but Project Fox is the first yacht we have built,” her Owner explains. “We wanted a yacht just as suited in classic destinations like the Bahamas and the Mediterranean as she is in frigid conditions like the Fjords. We’re also keen to put the vessel to work on specific ecological projects so space and flexibility are key.”

“Project Fox is the culmination of the experience and knowledge gained from earlier projects; we’ve cherry-picked from the successes of other builds and applied them to Project Fox, Project Manager Peter Legg explains. “She may look revolutionary, but her build is far from it. Project Fox is built from tried and

20 PROJECT FOX

tested methods, and we’ve put the Pendennis stamp on her.” This does not mean she’s not forward-thinking, though – far from it.

“Project Fox’s ethos isn’t too dissimilar to other exploration vessels, but her size is. Smaller yachts aren’t expected to carry big tenders and other toys, as she does. We’ve found it frustrating when yachts are limited with what they can carry and when they’re expecting a single tender to cater for all occasions,” says her Owner. “It was important for us to be able to change tenders and alter our equipment if we have a specific purpose in mind. Project Fox also needed to be child friendly. She has to be safe.”

Project Fox is outfitted to the highest standards to meet these demands. Everything is easily accessible so that future maintenance work can be carried out hassle-free. We’re pleased with the collaboration with designer Q London, naval architect Diana Yacht Design and interior contractor Mivan – who have all echoed our commitment throughout this project.

“Although the yacht will be an escape for us, connectivity for work purposes is vital,” her Owner continues. “We like to entertain and travel with friends, so accommodation and usable guest space is a big consideration. Both my wife and I are tall, so we have designed high ceilings which will give us a feeling of space that is probably rare on yachts of this size. The contrast of the external shape to the light and modern interior is also fun.”

Project Fox is sleek, modern and unfussy. She underwent some minor alterations in recent months; for example her forward master stateroom now benefits from large windows, providing panoramic views and an abundance of natural light. Another recent change is the additional guest suite added to the lower deck, bringing her total offering up to five guest staterooms. Project Fox's social areas are informal and in lieu of teak, her decks have been laid with the more sustainable Tesumo.

“This has been a nice project for us that everyone has enjoyed working on,” says Peter Legg. “We’ve assembled very experienced team leaders and project managers and mixed in more youthful and energetic apprentices. There has been a strong positive atmosphere in the shed and we’re incredibly proud of both the team and the results.”

“Pendennis has been an exceptional partner to build a yacht and their quality can rival that of the best Dutch shipyards,” her Owner adds. “This is going to be the first of many projects we will do together and I’m proud to be building a British yacht.”

“Calculations! Designing and engineering her versatile, open 103.5 square-metre aft deck required a lot of calculations,” says Hayri Onur Uykan, the Client’s Technical Rep overseeing Project Fox. “Project Fox has two operational modes: loaded and unloaded. And, of course, it's paramount that her performance is optimal in both instances. You need to consider weight distribution; unlike more traditional builds.”

Unlike more traditional displacement yachts, Project Fox's centre of buoyancy is more forward to ensure that when unloaded, weight is distributed evenly – reducing the impact on the tilt and roll when at anchor and underway. “In essence, we engineered Project Fox with two different principles – two principles that directly communicate with one another. The technique isn’t new, but it was a challenge that required us to lean into the experience gained from earlier projects.”

Safety was most important and every part and component has been rigorously tested, including the two Hydromar SEASCOTER SC18-T-25-7.5 cranes, built in the Netherlands, which flank her aft deck. “Project Fox is expected to carry an eight-metre tender and a submersible, each weighing just over two tonnes. But they’d also be deployed and captured in remote locations. To ensure safety we carried out tests in numerous conditions for up to four tonnes.”

Experience is in demand – how does Project Fox meet these needs?

More clients are inspired to look further afield than the traditional cruising grounds, leading to more adventurous and experience-based itineraries. If there is a desire to carry a submersible or even ATVs and snowmobiles to support land-based adventuring, Project Fox is the yacht that will enable it.

She’s a pocket explorer expected to compete with 80m support yachts. Why?

One function that this yacht could undertake is that of a support yacht. Typically a buyer would need to look at platforms above 50m to find the functionality and capacity that Project Fox offers. There are then the obvious cost benefits of finding a smaller yacht that still meets the Owner’s requirements.

Rarely is a Pendennis-built yacht on the market mid-construction. How have you found working with the team?

Working with Pendennis and building a project in such a special location has been fantastic. The onboard team are enthused about the project and they take pride in being involved in the construction. The whole shipyard has a lovely atmosphere.

Why is Pendennis the perfect yard for her construction?

Project Fox will be an enormous success. I honestly believe she will inspire others to build yachts of this size, which have great functionality and can explore our oceans and coastlines. Pendennis was identified as a shipyard that would build something different; they are not afraid of the challenges that a forwardthinking design will create and, most importantly, will deliver the same exceptional level of quality and craftsmanship as if this were a more conventional “white yacht”.

APPRENTICE EMPLOYERS

We were recognised once again in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers List 2023, this year ranking at number 35. We’re very proud to receive recognition for our commitment to maintaining world-class standards of training and development through our apprenticeship scheme.

KING’S SILVER MEDAL

Two of our apprentices, Sam and Megan, have been accepted on to The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights King’s Silver Medal this year. The Silver Medal was instituted in 1944 by His Majesty King George VI, Permanent Master of the Shipwrights' Company, to be awarded to the Shipyard Apprentice of the Year. Today the scheme is run each year by calling for nominations from every known yard in the United Kingdom, with the best then being selected by the Shipwrights to undertake a week's course and evaluation at Hawkhirst on Kielder Water in Northumberland in September. The directors of the course shortlist four or five to

attend the Education and Charities Committee for interview in early December, at the end of which the winners are announced.

In addition, the Shipwrights’ Best Company Prize is awarded to the company judged to provide the highest degree of training and support to its apprentices during the various stages of the King’s Silver Medal.

We have a history of success in both medals, with numerous previous winners, as well as being the recipient of the Best Company Prize four times.

We wish Sam and Megan the best of luck as the competition progresses.

Pendennis Apprentice Community Week is a regular part of the company’s annual National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, where Pendennis apprentices volunteer their time and skills to local organisations and charities. Aside from the satisfaction of helping out some good causes, the apprentices get the chance to practice managing small teams, planning jobs and communicating with external contacts and colleagues from different trades.

Meanwhile, community projects receive a well-deserved boost. This year, Pendennis apprentices volunteered at St Mary’s Primary School, The Crypt Pre-School, Blind at Sea, Falmouth Hospital and The Sunrise Centre at Treliske Hospital.

At St Mary’s, the apprentices were helping to build a sensory garden in memory of one of the school’s pupils. They helped with laying foundations, building planters and doing gardening work. Sailing

charity Blind at Sea received help with their yacht Lucienne, which had just been surveyed and had a list of items needing attention. The apprentices helped with as many items from the survey list as they could, including electrical work, repairs, painting and antifouling.

Once the work was signed off and the rest of the list complete, the yacht was able to return to the seas, where it is a vital part of the charity’s operations offering sailing trips to the visually impaired. The Crypt Pre-School in Falmouth, Falmouth Hospital and The Sunrise Centre at Treliske all received help with maintenance, gardening and painting. The patients of Falmouth and The Sunrise Centre now have improved peaceful outdoor spaces, while the children of The Crypt have a colourful outdoor shelter and freshened indoor space to enjoy.

FIVE YEARS OF PENDENNIS VILANOVA

28 5 YEARS OF VILANOVA

Pendennis Vilanova is celebrating its fifth anniversary – and what a five years it’s been!

What started as a marina with a basic repair yard for Med-centric yachts has grown into a multifaceted technical hub for superyachts wintering in the Mediterranean. Pendennis Vilanova has a 48-berth marina and a 30,000-square-metre technical area. It can welcome yachts up to 135 metres in length to berth, and haul out motor and sailing yachts up to 55m.

Coinciding with the fifth anniversary of Pendennis Vilanova are two significant milestones: the completion of stage three of development, which has seen a brand-new paint facility added to the site; and the 300th project welcomed to the yard. Pendennis is proud of the team we’ve built over the last five years, and we have a wide range of nationalities that all play their part in the continual developments and future plans we have in Vilanova.

Strategically located on the eastern coastline of Spain between Barcelona and Tarragona, Pendennis Vilanova is centrally located in the western Med and benefits from the full backing of its parent company Pendennis Falmouth. Its location makes it an ideal pitstop for quick work between the two seasons and being less than 200 nautical miles from the Balearics, completed projects can be back out on the charter circuit in less than a day’s sailing.

The local city of Vilanova i la Geltrú has won the hearts of many, because of its world-class gastronomy, lively calendar of events and general tranquil atmosphere. “We have a fantastic local culture that we frequently share with our clients and guests,” says Miquel Lliteras, General Manager of Pendennis Vilanova. “Vilanova i la Geltrú is surrounded by vineyards and we often invite the local growers for wine-tasting events with music and barbecues. It’s a big hit for crew and captains, and many have even been inspired to take up residency in the area.” >>

Since its inauguration in 1851, the America’s Cup has come to Europe just twice – and both times to Spain. The competing teams will return for the third time, but this time further north and will race around Barcelona. We’re thrilled to have been chosen as the Host Venue for the first Preliminary Regatta of the 37th America’s Cup.

Pendennis Vilanova will serve as the technical area, hosting the team bases and their AC40s. The event coincides with our fifth anniversary. We look forward to welcoming the teams later this year.

But, of course, Pendennis Vilanova isn’t only about drinking wine and festivities! The shipyard offers strong technical know-how and a bespoke, tailored approach whereby clients can either opt for a full Pendennismanaged service, a hybrid approach or rent the space to complete work using their own contractors. The flexible approach is one reason why referral and return rates are so high.

“We’ve invested a lot into Pendennis Vilanova and just this year we added a new paint facility to complement our joinery, engineering and electrical workshops,” says Kirk Oldfield, Project Manager at Pendennis Vilanova. “We offer flexible storage solutions and workshop rental

when available, and we have multiple companies based within our facilities to better our offering to our clients. Health and safety plays a major role here and we offer 24-hour security.”

Pendennis Vilanova has a 620-tonne and a 200-tonne travel hoist on-site and is very flexible on short-notice requests. It can accommodate a variety of work on a wide range of vessels. If there’s a term to describe Pendennis Vilanova, it's dynamic.

“We’re transparent and open with our communications, delivering greater oversight and clear goals to our clients,” Oldfield continues. “It works for us and we’re very pleased to welcome the same yachts season after season.”

CASE STUDIES

CHRISTOPHER

Hybrid

46m ketch Christopher was originally built at Pendennis’ Falmouth facility in 2011 and first visited Pendennis Vilanova in January 2023 for her Lloyd’s class survey. She stayed in the marina before being hauled out for antifouling, underwater and support works. After completing her survey Christopher departed for a summer cruise, before returning to Vilanova in July for a short stay in the marina before heading to the Caribbean.

VA BENE

Pendennis managed

The 47.8-metre Va Bene is a repeat client of Pendennis – at both facilities. She arrived at Pendennis Vilanova in late 2022 for a full repaint, a rebuild of her generators and numerous mechanical works. Pendennis Vilanova managed the whole project, ensuring she was back in the water for a busy 2023 summer season.

LIONHEART

Hybrid

Much like Va Bene, the 43.4-metre J Class Lionheart has undertaken work at both Pendennis facilities. Lionheart ’s captain has their own contractors for painting and teak work, but required support for replacing the stern tubes, electrical troubleshooting and unstepping the masts. Pendennis Vilanova offers the space for the work and also the technical know-how for the more complex tasks.
