TOGETHER, CULTIVATING THE BEST IN EACH, FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL.

Pembroke Hill School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving students age 2 through grade 12. Created by the 1984 merger of the all-grils Sunset Hill School (1913) and the allboys Pembroke-Country Day School (1910), Pembroke Hill is located on two campuses, less than a mile apart in Kansas City, MO.

THE PEMBROKE HILL EXPERIENCE

The PHS experience is based on the concept that education of young people is society’s most important act. Great value must be placed on children and their individual growth by providing challenging and meaningful educational experiences that shape the whole child.

Students develop critical thinking skills through discussion, debate and the study of all topics along with participation in a multitude of activities representing academics, arts and athletics. Pembroke Hill’s goal is to teach students how to think, not what to think.

PEMBROKE HILL SIGNATURE PROGRAMS

SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECTS

All seniors propose a culminating project that demonstrates their skills in research, writing and oral presentation. They choose a subject with which they have a personal connection or passion. Past topics have included the ethics of cloning; memory, aging, trauma and the brain; the evolution of pop music; artificial intelligence; and the future of energy. Innovative presentations have included a one-person show illustrating the experiences of an individual with ADHD. One student even converted a car from gasoline-powered to an electric vehicle.

JANUARY INTERIM

January Interim (JanTerm) is a full week dedicated to alternative and experimental course offerings which provide non-traditional learning opportunities. JanTerm promotes interdisciplinary learning and independent study while providing opportunities for community service and travel. Students may also lead courses with mentoring from a faculty member.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

All Pembroke Hill students complete at least 60 hours of service over four years. In the Class of 2024, 76 percent exceeded this requirement. The entire class amassed a total of 10,102 service hours. Forty-three students earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

SPEECH & DEBATE

Nearly a quarter of upper school students participate in Pembroke Hill’s award-winning speech and debate program. Currently, the program is ranked 12th in the nation. In 2021-22, the team was the overall Show Me District champion, securing both the speech and debate sweepstakes. The group sent 17 students to nationals, the most in school history, and were Missouri state champions in 2023.
