Welcome to the Spring 2025 Auxiliary Programs at Pembroke Hill School! Our commitment is to provide your child with afterschool experiences that are safe, fun, and enriching. This booklet serves as your comprehensive guide to understanding the exciting range of programs we offer.

We are thrilled to announce that registration for enrichment classes and clubs is now conveniently available online. Please take a moment to review this handbook for the latest updates and detailed information about our programs.

LOWERSCHOOL,WORNALLCAMPUS

- Our Extended Day program serves Lower School students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade, offering a safe and nurturing environment for after-school activities. Students have the opportunity to complete their homework assignments, engage in reading, play games and participate in a variety of activities. The program is designed to provide a seamless extension of the school day, ensuring that children are well cared for and engaged until 6:00 p.m. beginning on August 19, 2024 and ending on May 22, 2025 throughout the academic school year.

The Extended Day program for lower school students is held in the Deramus Field House. Students are grouped by age to ensure activities are age-appropriate and engaging. Students can participate in Interactive games, beginner-level sports, homework assistance, and themed crafts. Activities take place inside the field house, on the playground, and occasionally elsewhere on campus.

HOURS - Extended Day begins when school dismisses and ends promptly at 6 p.m. Please note, after 6 p.m. late pick ups will be billed at the rate of $1 per minute for the first 10 minutes and $2 per minute thereafter.

CONTRACTS

- Multiple types of Extended Day contracts are available. Families with a daily contract will pay a discounted rate. The form is located on the Pembroke Hill website on the Extended Day page. Completed contracts can be sent to Mike Marcase in the business office. A drop-in contract is also available for those who wish to use the program on a flexible schedule.

Spring childcare days

Childcare is available from 7:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on the following dates when school is not in session. Advance registration is required. Communication will come from Haley LeClair approximately two weeks prior to each Childcare start date.

January 2-3, 2025: Winter Break

February 14, 2025: Professional Day

March 10-21, 2025: Spring Break

April 25, 2025: Parent-Teacher Conferences

The cost for childcare days is $90 per day, per child. You are not required to have an Extended Day contract to utilize this service. Childcare is offered 7:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. An email will be sent to all parents prior to each date, which will include a registration link with and further details. Please note, any changes to your registration must be made in advance by the specified date to avoid penalty. Late cancellation, late registration, and drop ins will incur an additional $20 fee per day per child.

Spring 2025 ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Pembroke Hill Auxiliary Programs offers after-school enrichment classes to students in kindergarten through fifth grade, designed to engage them in a variety of activities with their peers. Classes cover a wide range of topics and are offered in both the fall and spring sessions, meeting once a week for six weeks.

Enrollment is open to all students on a first-come, first-served basis. Space in each class is limited, so early enrollment is encouraged. A communication will be sent approximately a month in advance of the start of enrichment classes from Sara Dougherty.

All Spring 2025 Enrichment classes will start the week of January 27, 2025. Completing the registration form does not guarantee that your student will be placed in the class. Responses are time-stamped, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Spring 2025 Registration opens on December 17, 2024 at 9:00am. Confirmation emails for student placements in each class will be sent to parents as soon as possible, but no later than the end of the day on January 7, 2025. Students with an Extended Day contract until 5:00 p.m. or later will receive a 50% discount on enrichment classes. Enrichment classes will be billed to the student's business office account. Cancellations for enrichment class reservations must be made at least a week in advance to the start date of the class. Class reservations not cancelled within this timeframe will not be eligible for a refund. The dates and details for each class are listed below within the description.

Classes run from dismissal to 4:30 p.m. Students who are not picked up at the dismissal of their club at 4:30 p.m. will be taken to Extended Day in Deramus Field House, and will incur the drop-in rate for Extended Day if they do not have a contract for that day.

The Coterie's Adventure Stories, Grades K-2, $125

Mondays, January 27-March 3. Primary Building, pick up back lot. (Excluding February 17, 2025)

In this imaginative drama class, students will embark on exciting adventures inspired by themes like nature, outer space, and beloved picture books. Through playful activities, they'll use their voice, body, and imagination to bring stories to life, becoming the characters and exploring new worlds. Each week offers a fresh theme, encouraging students to express themselves and build confidence while having fun. Join us as we dive into stories and turn them into unforgettable adventures!

Checkmate Chess Club, Grades K-2, $175

Wednesdays, January 29-March 5. Intermediate Building, pick up back lot.

The Kansas City Chess Club chess curriculum will guide students from Rook level advancement Progress will be measured by a skills test taken at the end of each level. Students will practice visualization skills using The Kansas City Chess Club's workbooks. The club tournament each semester will prepare students for local tournaments

Rock Climbing, Grades 1-2, $100

Tuesdays, January 28-March 4. Deramus Field House, pick up back lot.

Harness your strength and learn climbing basics, safety techniques, and equipment use while building strength and confidence. Students will face fun challenges on the rock wall, developing problem-solving skills and teamwork in a supportive environment.

King & Queen Chess Club, Grades 3-5, $175

Thursdays, January 30-March 6 Intermediate Building, pick up front lot

The Kansas City Chess Club chess curriculum will guide students to King level advancement Progress will be measured by a skills test taken at the end of each level. Students will practice visualization skills using The Kansas City Chess Club's workbooks The club tournament each semester will prepare students for local tournaments. Advanced bug house and 960 chess strategy will be covered.

The Coterie's Mythical Journeys, Grades 3-5, $150

Wednesdays, January 29-March 5 Intermediate Building, pick up front lot

In this dynamic drama class, students will delve into themes from mythology and popular youth literature, exploring stories with rich characters and complex plots. This student-driven program encourages participants to take the lead in creating and performing, developing their storytelling skills through imaginative play With a focus on teamwork, problem-solving, and community-building, students will collaborate to bring tales to life, crafting unique narratives while honing their creativity and confidence Join us for an adventure into the world of myths and legends!

F.I.R.S.T Lego League Explore, Grades 2-4, $100

Mondays, January 27-March 3 Intermediate Building, pick up front lot (Excluding February 17, 2025)

F I R S T Lego League Explore offers students an engaging foundation in computational thinking and engineering skills. This program connects young minds to the world of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) as they explore real-world challenges, build problem-solving skills, and collaborate with peers Through hands-on learning and creative play, students begin their journey as innovative thinkers and future engineers.

The Earth and You, Grades 4-5, $100

Tuesdays, January 28-March 4. Intermediate Building, pick up front lot.

Join Dr. MacGregor and Mrs. Nibberich, along with stellar high school members of the Raider Sustainability Corps, to have fun learning about how we can help the Earth and promote sustainability Students will support the "reduce, reuse, recycle" initiative by sponsoring a clothing drive and encouraging recycling efforts at the Lower School, study plant and animal species in our area through walking field trips to Loose Park, build solar cookers out of pizza boxes and roast marshmallows and more! The class will culminate with students working to educate their own community about the importance of caring for the Earth by making posters to put up around school and presenting at a Community Days assembly this spring. Join us as we use the "Generation Carbon" curriculum to be more informed, educated global citizens-and have a blast while doing it!

PRIVATE MUSIC INSTRUCTION

Pembroke Hill offers private music instruction to nurture and develop students' musical talents. Our program provides personalized lessons tailored to each student's skill level and interests, fostering a deeper appreciation for music and enhancing their overall educational experience. By offering one-on-one instruction, we aim to help students achieve their musical goals, build confidence, and discover the joy of music

Instrumental music lessons will be offered through private music instructors between 3:15 and 6 p m , Monday through Friday, on the Wornall Campus. Any student who is interested in learning to play an instrument is encouraged to contact Sara Dougherty

Each instructor will require a parent to sign the studio policy, explaining the expectations for the student/parent/instructor arrangement. Music lessons will be billed to the student's business office account per the terms stated in the studio policy with the instructor Due to payroll cut-off dates, each billing is for the middle part of two months. During inclement weather, music lessons will be canceled along with other Pembroke Hill after-school activities Cancellations will be listed on the Pembroke Hill website

Meet our Instructors

Dr. Tom Aber, Clarinet & Saxophone

Dr. Tom Aber brings extensive experience as a performing musician to his teaching of clarinet and saxophone. A graduate of the Juilliard School and of the Conservatory Of Music at the University Of Missouri-Kansas City, he was the bass clarinetist with the Omaha Symphony from 1990 through 2021. Before that, he studied on a Fulbright-Hays grant in the Netherlands and performed with several Dutch orchestras, including the National Ballet Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. In Kansas City, he can be heard with the newEar ensemble and with the eclectic pop band BCR He has taught clarinet and saxophone for more than 20 years at the Antioch Music Center in North Kansas City, as well as through the extension division of the Conservatory (19881993) Since he began teaching private music instruction at Pembroke Hill in 2008, he has helped many beginning and intermediate students build and enhance their skills as musicians. Dr. Aber believes in developing his students' abilities to listen carefully to their playing and to use a relaxed, thoughtful approach as keys to enjoyment and success in music making

Laura Worms, Piano

Laura has been playing piano since the 7th grade, starting out as an organist for her local church She received her master's degree in piano performance at Southern Illinois University, where she also was a graduate assistant teaching piano to college students and earned a graduate award in Piano Pedagogy She has taught piano for more than 30 years to students of all ages and various levels of ability.

Lesson Fees: $33 per half hour

Lyra Pherigo, Flute and Piano

Lyra Pherigo is an active musician in Kansas City. As a flutist she has played with newEar, the Kansas City Symphony, the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, the Kansas City Ballet and the Kansas City Civic Opera She also plays for Starlight Theater and Theater League productions. Recent collaborations include recording for a documentary titled "We the People" created for IMAX Theater, and learning to play Asian flutes, called Dizi flutes, for a production of Miss Saigon. As a singer, she adds her soprano voice to Schola Cantorum, a professional ensemble that provides music at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. As conductor, Lyra enjoys leading the Chancel Choir at Bonner Springs United Methodist Church She also enjoys teaching private music lessons. She teaches flute and beginning piano. Her favorite musical collaboration is with her husband; pianist, singer, and composer: Robert Pherigo Her son Lucas is a talented singer-songwriter and barbershop enthusiast in Kansas City. She is grateful for a life filled with music.

Cody Young, Brass and Music Theory Lessons

Cody Young is a dedicated music educator and performer with a rich background in brass instruction and music theory. With Bachelor’s degrees in both Music Education and Music Theory from the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory of Music, Cody is currently pursuing a Master’s in Educational Administration at the University of Kansas. He serves as the Band Director at Pembroke Hill School, following a successful tenure at Bolivar R-1 Schools Cody's extensive experience includes conducting the Missouri State University Community Band, guiding the Fountain City Youth Brass Academy, and working with various elementary, middle, and high school ensembles and honor bands His commitment to fostering musical excellence is further evidenced by his recognition as an SBO Magazine “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” recipient and his role in numerous professional music organizations With a passion for nurturing young musicians and a track record of inspiring performances, Cody is dedicated to helping students achieve their full musical potential.

Candice Hill, Percussion Lessons

Candice Hill is a percussion performer, educator, clinician, composer and adjudicator Candice received her Master of Music Performance, Steel Pan, from Northern Illinois University, and Bachelor of Music Performance, Percussion, from Missouri State University As an educator, Candice has spent over a decade teaching drumline and concert percussion for the North Kansas City School district as a percussion specialist, and has given clinics for other area school districts, including Shawnee Mission, Raytown, and Desoto She has an active private lesson studio for students studying all areas of percussion, and adjudicates auditions and performances for drumline, marching festivals, and Missouri High School Activities Association events every year. She formerly served on percussion faculty with the School of Music at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS where she directed the KU World Steelband, and formerly at Avila University as Drumline Director and World Music Lecturer Candice has performed as a featured guest artist with dozens of middle school, high school and college ensembles, as well as wind ensembles, community bands and choirs throughout the United States.

Wornall Campus Chorus

Fifth grade students may elect to participate in an extracurricular chorus, the 51st Street Singers, under the direction of Stephanie Springate Students experience the joy of singing a variety of musical styles The lower school chorus meets for 30 minutes twice a week before school. Repertoire is selected to enhance the students skill levels while ensuring a rich experience in singing varied literature and exploring new musical concepts Students perform in the winter and spring in venues both on and off campus.
