SERMON OUTLINE
TELL THE STORY
Psalm 107
“Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story…” - Psalm 107:2a
“One of the things we’ve lost in this country is our story. It is the narrative that unites us around a common multi-generational project, that gives an overarching sense of meaning and purpose to our history. For most of the past 400 years, Americans did have an overarching story. It was the Exodus story…. Many people don’t know what this country is here for, and what we are here for. If you don’t know what your goal is, then every setback sends you into cynicism and selfishness.” – David Brooks
1. Story – We live in narrative, not ideas.
With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a story [parable]. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything. – Mark 4:33-34
“The best arguments in the world won’t change a single person’s mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story.” – Richard Powers
“Stories are like flight simulators for the brain.” – Chip and Dan Heath
2. Their – Everyone has a story and is part of a larger story.
“One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” – John 9:25
Structure of a good story (Kindra Hall):
• Normal – things as they are
• Explosion – something happens
• New normal – things are different
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he [Jesus] explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” – Luke 24:27
3. Tell – Stories are meant to be shared.
“In the future, when your son asks you, “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the L ord our God has commanded you?” tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the L ord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Before our eyes the L ord …”
–Deuteronomy 6:20-22a
4. Redeemed – The heart of every story is restoration.
The Pixar formula … Once upon a time there was
Every day .
One day
Because of that .
Because of that
Until finally .
5. Let – Stories are an invitation, not a demand.
“For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.” – Ernest Hemingway
“Story is the most natural way of enlarging and deepening our sense of reality, and then enlisting us as participants in it…. They welcome us in. Stories are verbal acts of hospitality. ” – Eugene H. Peterson.
“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” – Romans 10:14a
