SERMON OUTLINE

BLESS ME

Psalm 67

Three mistakes when we pray for blessing:

1. Blessing is what I have—when it’s really about who has me.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us (v. 1)

Question: Do you seek God’s face or just his handout?

2. Blessing is just for me—when it’s really meant to flow through me.

—so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations…. May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. (v. 2 and 4)

Question: Do you see your life as a vacation or a vocation?

2. Blessing is something I’ve earned—when it’s really something I’ve received.

May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. (v. 5-6)

Question: Do your blessings lead to pride or praise?

“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven…but we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us. And we have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own…. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient… too proud to pray to the God that made us.” — Abraham Lincoln

Daily Dwell: May 18-May 24

“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us — so that your ways may be known…” - Psalm 67:1–2

ROMANS 5:1-5

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

PSALM 23 (ESV)

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
