You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

SERMON OUTLINE

THE CAVE PRISON

Psalm 142

“I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy. I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble. When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way.” – Psalm 142:1-3

• Have there been moments in your life when you felt utterly desperate?

• Times when the weight of your circumstances left you feeling isolated—even from God?

While Psalm 142 was written by David from a literal cave, isolated and desperate he is describing the situational and spiritual caves we sometimes find ourselves in. The truth is, pain cannot be resolved solely with our minds; it must be felt, expressed, and brought before God with our hearts. Rationalization is no substitute for lament.

This psalm offers a model for prayer when we are at our lowest. It teaches us how to endure and how to open ourselves to God’s grace:

Pray in Desperation

Be honest with God expressing your pain.

Pray in Hope

Trust that God hears you and sees the path ahead.

Pray in Praise

Even in the cave, believe that God is still worthy of worship.

Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.

As Eugene Peterson reminds us, “The Psalms train us in prayer that is honest and personal. They don’t teach us to be nice — they show us how to be human.”

Daily Dwell: July 20-July 26

“Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name….” - Psalm 142:7

THE CHURCH: Local

Roots, Global Mission

AUGUST 3, 10 AND 17 | 9:45AM

FELLOWSHIP HALL

How did the Church begin, and where is it headed today? What does it mean to be part of a local church in America—and how do we relate to Christians worshipping in underground gatherings across the world?

This 3-week Sunday morning class explores the Church from three angles: its historical roots, its American expressions, and its global realities—especially where believers endure persecution for their faith. In our final session, we’ll hear from Rev. Dr. Sasan Tavassoli, a former Shi’ite Muslim from Iran who came to faith in Christ through American missionaries. Now a Presbyterian pastor and missionary with the Outreach Foundation, he brings decades of experience serving the Iranian and Persian-speaking Church and will offer a powerful firsthand look at the global Body of Christ.

Whether you’re new to the faith or a longtime member, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the Church as a living, global Body shaped by Scripture, history, culture, and the Spirit of God. Join us for an honest, hopeful look at how Christ’s Church has taken shape through the centuries—and what it means for us today.

Registration is not required.
