With the Czar of the Metro, Diandino Peña Criqué, another close confidant of former President Leonel Fernández came into the firing line. In his affidavit, he stated that he was living solely of the salary of 150,000 pesos which is paid to him as a public functionary. He stated that he does not own any real estate, cars or luxury goods that are not derived from this salary. Now Alicia Ortega, a revelation journalist, published a completely different story. She asked Diandino Peña Criqué for an interview, and he thought she would only ask him about his career in the private sector. When she confronted him with a total of 29 companies, of which he founded 25 after his entry into the government of Leonel Fernández, he failed to offer an explanation. However, Wagner Rivera from the Meteorological Institute Onamet in Santo Domingo warns that even in an underaverage season it can not be predicted whether the rains caused by hurricanes will be strong or weak. In the Hurricane season 2016, seven of the 15 tropical storms with a name turned into hurricanes, three of them in higher categories. The worst was Hurricane “Matthew”, which caused severe flooding in the Dominican Republic. Four people were killed in landslides. Very hard hit by “Matthew” was the southwest of Haiti, where more than 900 people lost their lives due to the floods.
Panic among the dwellers of the north coast of the Dominican Republic, was caused by the sudden retreat of the Atlantic Ocean in the morning of the 2 nd of May of a distance of more than 50 meters. The coastal dwellers feared that there was a seaquake and that the sea had retreated to return as a tsunami. But the authorities quickly gave an all-clear. There has no near seaquake, nor had the heavy rainfall of the past few weeks anything to do with this extreme retreat of the sea. It was a so-called neap tide, which occurs when the moon and the sun are at a 90degree angle to the earth and there is low tide. Actually this is nothing very special. Only that this time the sea level was extremely low, which can occur in this form every three years. Often this phenomenon is not even noticed by the people, for example, when it takes place at night.
Export Hit from Baní Mangoes exported for 6.9 Million Dollars per Crop / Damage to Infrastructure by Rains The “mango banilejo”, the small, yellow mango from Baní, is known for its exquisite taste, but it is not the most exported fruit of Baní. The only reason: it is simply too small. The race is made by the large red-green Keith, which accounts for 65 percent of Baní's mango exports. Mangoes have now become an important export item of the Dominican Republic. Last year, according to figures from the Mango Producers of Baní (Abapromango), the revenues were more than 20 million dollars for the whole country. The Bani region, one of the main mango regions, contributed 6.9 million dollars with each crop. The chairman of the Dominican Mango Cluster, Rafael Leger, said that in the year 2000, Haiti exported two million crates of mangoes, the Dominican Republic only 300,000. “But today we have overcome this situation, thanks to an evenly growing growth in exports to Europe, the USA and the Caribbean islands.” Today, the prospect of each harvest alone from Baní is 535,500 crates.
According to Abapromango, the Dominican Republic cultivates 1,500 commercial farms on an area of 84,000 tareas (about 5,300 hectares) of export-appropriate mango. 70 percent of these farms are located in the Baní zone. In addition to Baní there are three other major cultivation areas in the southwest: Ázua, Neiba and San Juan de la Maguana. Mangoes are originally from India, which today is the main producer with an annual production of about 15 million tons, and mangoes are already mentioned in the Veda texts as “food of the Gods” in 1,200 BC.
The heavy and long-lasting rains in April and May have resulted in damage to the infrastructure of the Dominican Republic of more than 105 million dollars. A total of at least 42 bridges broke down, unable to resist the water masses, 13 roads, 18 municipal roads and numerous retaining walls were destroyed. According to the Minister of Economy, Ángel Estévez, around 40 percent of the rice cultivation has been affected in various parts of the country. But there will not be any scarcity of this basic food, since at the beginning of the rains already 60 per cent of the harvest were in the granaries. “The difficult part is where the rice is ripe,” said Estévez. In total, however, there are less than 5,000 tareas (315 hectares) which are still under water. Murderous Region Caracas has highest Murder Rate / 43 of the 50 most dangerous Cities in Latin America Latin America with the Caribbean is the region of the world where most of the murders are committed. With a world population share of just nine percent, onethird of all murders of the world happen in this region. Every month, 11,000 people in Latin America and the Caribbean lose their lives due to violence. In addition to the tragic personal fates, these violent acts also cause immense economic damage. The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB, Spanish: BID) estimates that this is causing an annual damage to the region by 261 billion dollars, equivalent to 3.55 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). These losses are calculated as follows: Social costs and losses as the detainee is no longer productive: 0.64 percent of the GDP, private sector expenditure on security, for example for monitoring and security personnel, services: 1.37 percent, and costs for courts, police and prisons: 1.51 percent of the GDP.

The reason for the many violent acts is, in most cases, the delinquency for the drugs. Gangs are fighting for territories, “traitors” are killed, shootouts between police or military and members of drug bands. Often, people who accidentally are present at the wrong place and the wrong time are also killed. The violent delinquency in the Dominican Republic is pretty worrying, but still far from what happens in other countries of the continent. Among the world's 50 most violent cities in 2016, no Dominican city appears. Of the 50 most violent cities of the world, 43 are located in Latin America. 19 of them in Brazil, eight in Mexico and seven in Venezuela, with the Venezuelan capital Caracas at the top with 130.35 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. However, Mexico's Citizens' Council for Public Security, admits that the figures for Caracas can not be verified, because the Venezuelan government does not provide regular information, and because many of the dead come from outside to the morgues of Caracas.
Next to Caracas follows the Mexican seaside resort of Acapulco with 113.23 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. On the ranks three and four follow the Honduran cities San Pedro Sula and Distrito Central, the capital. On place 13, Cape Town in South Africa is the first city outside the region with 60.77 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. One rank lower comes St. Louis in the USA (60.37) one of a total of four cities of this country. These include Baltimore (51.14 on rank 26), New Orleans (45.17, rank 34) and Detroit (44.60, rank 36). The list includes two other cities outside the region: Nelson Mandela Bay and Durban in South Africa on the positions 43 and 50. The most murderous city in the Caribbean is Jamaica's capital, Kingston (45.43 murders per 100,000 inhabitants on rank 32). In the “unsafe” Dominican Republic, the murder rate was 15.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2016, only Panama and Costa Rica show less.
“Operación Sonrisa” 53,000 Operations in Latin America and the Caribbean in 35 Years / Mission in April Every three minutes somewhere in the world, a child with a so-called “harelip”, or today cleft lip, or a cleft palate is born, that is, one of 500 to 750 newborns. In the rich countries it is usually no problem to correct this birth defect with an operation and to allow the child a normal life. Reasons for these maladies are probably both hereditary and external factors such as smoking or alcohol and drug use of the mother during pregnancy or mother's diseases such as rubella or lack of folic acid, overdosage of vitamin A, and much more.
In contrast to countries with good health care, a cleft lip or palate is a serious problem for the newborn in the poorer countries. The probability of dying before their first birthday is twice as high as in children without this defect. Since nasal and oral cavity are not separated in the palate, they can not swallow properly and thus do not get enough food. They simply starve to death. If they survive, many cannot speak or hear well. In some cultures, these poor little beings are also considered cursed.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, almost one million people live with a cleft lip or palate today. The US-American Operation Smile, in Spanish “Operación Sonrisa” is a non-profit organization that carries out free operations in about 40 countries in order to give these children a smile and thus a dignified life with an average 45-minute intervention. In the 35 years of its existence, this organization has operated more than 53,000 children in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the Dominican Republic, these free operations have been carried out by Operación Sonrisa only since 2009. The last mission took place from 3 to 7 April in Santo Domingo. In these years there have been operated about 1,000 children.

Recently, the American rapper Wiz Khalifa caused a furious reaction in Colombia because he laid down flowers on the tomb of Pablo Escobar, who was shot dead by a police officer in 1993 (see LA PLAYA 195). Now the Dominican singer of Música urbana, Jaroimi Matos, known as El Super Nuevo (see LA PLAYA 164), also felt the need to imitate this idea. He published a photo on Instagram, showing him kneeling before the boss of the bosses. Together with the remark: “If you know his story, leave a comment #RIP.” Comments followed, like: “Great story, hahaha, Pablo Escobar, the god of criminals. What a clown you are!” Others applauded, “He may have killed many, but he also did much good.” But contrary to Wiz Khalifa, who fights for the legalization of marijuana, none of the Dominican Dembowseros has balls of steel. In their songs, they flirt with drugs, as in “Tengo una mata en mi casa” (I have a plant at home) by Químico Ultra Mega, where he fleetingly shows a marijuana-like plant. But when these guys are confronted to maintain their opinion publicly, their poor response is always: “Drugs? Not me! Never! All the others yes!”
In an interview with the Dominican TV presenter Dafne Guzmán, who traveled to Miami exclusively for this interview, the Venezuelan singer José Luis “El Puma” Rodríguez said he would like to retire in the Dominican Republic. “El Puma” is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Latin music with hits like “Dueño de nada” or “Culpable soy yo”. He is both, a Venezuelan and a US citizen, and he is a critic of the current Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro. José Luis Rodríguez said in the interview, “I feel something very special for the Dominicans. Because this place in truth is a paradise.” He is residing in Miami because of his pulmonary fibromatosis, a progressive disease for which he asks his fans to form a prayer chain. “I try to live day by day, every moment, now, because I didn't do that before,” he mused. Nevertheless, he recently recorded a new album in which he sings songs of his 50-year career, in duets with stars like Alejandro Fernández or Chayanne.

Olga Teresa Tañón Ortiz was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, on the 13th of April 1967. Since she was a child, she loved the Dominican Merengue, and she is still regarded as one of the most genuine performers of this genre, although she is a Puerto Rican. After working with different orchestras in her youth, Olga Tañón published her first solo album in 1992, which is still dominated by Dominican Merengues. In the nineties, she was one of the biggest Merengue stars. From her fourth album in 1996 she was looking for new ways with Mexican themes and ballads. No less successful. Meanwhile, she released more than 20 albums. Olga Tañón has won numerous high-profile prizes such as two Grammys, three Latin Grammys, twelve Latin Billboard Music Awards and nine Premios Lo Nuestro. On this 12th of May, her new album “Olga Tañón y Punto” was released, which includes the Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Wisin.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them. a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing
