Second Season is over “Amber Cove” tipped for Success / Lighthouse at La Puntilla in Puerto Plata to be restored

The second season of the cruise port “Amber Cove” in the Bay of Maimón, west of Puerto Plata, now is over. Between the beginning of November and the end of March, more than 20 cruise ships docked each month. In April will start the low season, when on average only eight ships will arrive a month. In the full year 2016, a total of 120 cruise ships arrived in “Amber Cove”, bringing 470,003 passengers. Since January 2017 there came 49 more ships with 128,652 passengers. According to the Tourist Cluster of Puerto Plata, between January and August 2016, the number of tourists in Puerto Plata rose by 7.1 percent compared to the previous year. The highest increase since 2000. Beside some shops and businesses, mainly the carriers have an additional income due to the cruise ships. Thus, since January, 4,434 taxis were booked by the arriving guests, but only 129 rented a car.

The next arrivals in “Amber Cove” Maimón March, 22 Crown Princess March, 27 Carnival Magic March, 28 Regal Princess March, 28 Eurodam March, 29 - 31 Adonia March, 29 Carnival Conquest March, 31 Carnival Splendor April, 3 Carnival Glory April, 10 Carnival Magic April, 11 Carnival Splendor April, 12 Carnival Conquest April, 12 - 14 Adonia April, 24 Carnival Magic April, 25 Carnival Splendor April, 26 Carnival Conquest April, 26 - 28 Adonia

Julio Almonte, Vice Minister for Tourism on the North Coast, said the arrival of a total of 1.1 million cruise tourists in 2016 had revolutionized the Dominican Republic. The 1.1 million were in addition to the six million tourists who came to the country by the airports. “There is now a phenomenon that forces Puerto Plata to reinvent itself,” Almonte said in a talk about the development of the destination Puerto Plata. There are not only the cruise tourists, the tourists who come by plane or from the other provinces of the country, but also the real estate market. The hotels of the region now will focus on good service and are not eager any more to attract many guests with a low budget.

The restoration of the lighthouse at the entrance to the port of Puerto Plata, built during Gregorio Luperón's government in 1879, when Puerto Plata was a provisional capital, is about to be completed. The lighthouse was neglected for many years and the sea air destroyed its structure sustainably. The remodeling of the lighthouse is part of the second phase, which will bring the national park La Puntilla with the Fortaleza de San Felipe and the newly built amphitheater back to the front. The amphitheater will be inaugurated with a concert of popular stars on the 15th of April.

“Llama Verde” Massive Protests against Corruption / “Somos Pueblo” asks Brazilian Justice for Help

The case of the Brazilian international construction group Odebrecht, which paid high bribes to political officials in twelve countries of Latin America and Africa in order to obtain lucrative orders, causes a dangerous stir in the Dominican Republic. After a massive protest of the citizen's movement “Marcha Verde” - the Green March - in Santo Domingo on 22 January, the organization collected signatures in the so-called “Libro Verde” - green book, where more than 300,000 people signed. These signatures were handed over to the National Palace in February.

Now, “Marcha Verde” launched another action: “Llama Verde” - green flame, which was ignited in Dajabón on the hill of El Capotillo (right), where the Restoration War against Spain began on the 16 th of August 1863, which ended in the final independence of the Dominican Republic. In various other provinces, a torch was lit, which the followers of the movement carry throughout the country, to submit it at the next big rally in the Parque de la Independencia in the capital Santo Domingo on the 19th of March. On the 5th of March there was also a large rally (left) in the city of Puerto Plata. Thousands were demonstrating against corruption and impunity. President Medina promised in his speech on the state of the nation, that his government will be mercilessly against corruption. However, few believe it. On the contrary. The leader of the opposition party Alianza País, Guillermo Moreno, demands that the president has to testify in the corruption case before a commission.

The citizen's movement “Somos Pueblo” we are the people, which supports the “Marcha Verde”, has asked the Brazilian Prosecutor to hand them over a copy of the documentary with Dominican officials mentioned by name. The Dominican Prosecutor's Office has already done this, but “Somos Pueblo” is wary of this. It states that the General Prosecutor Jean Alain Rodríguez is a member of the Central Committee of the governing party PLD, the party, which is obviously deeply involved in the scandal. It was therefore impossible for him to act impartially and objectively. Rodríguez was appointed by President Medina, who was presumably entangled in the scandal. Since the ruling party “kidnapped the National Congress”, the solidarity of the Brazilian judiciary with the Dominican people was necessary to bring light to this case.

Bahía de las Águilas 15,000 Hotel Rooms planned / Huge Touristic Potential / Medical Tourism is booming

The development of tourism in the country will be further pushed ahead. The touristic potential of the Bahía de las Águilas has long been discovered, but legal disputes concerning false land titles have hitherto prevented serious planning. José Ramón Peralta, Minister of the Administration of the Presidency, announced that in April the representatives of some of the world's biggest hotel chains will accompany President Danilo Medina to the province of Pedernales in the south-west of the country, where the Bahía de las Águilas is located. They want to investigate the construction of at least 15,000 residential units. The prospects for this are excellent.

Beside the beautiful beaches, Pedernales, one of the poorest provinces in the country, offers numerous intact ecosystems that increase the attractiveness for tourists. One of the problems of this region near the border with Haiti is the lack of infrastructure, which must be developed first in a tourist development. This includes, in addition to the roads, an airport and the construction of several ports. According to Peralta, President Medina aims to be the best government in the history of the country, which is why he was working tirelessly with people and for people. Especially for the poorest. The creation of jobs in the poorest provinces also serves this purpose. In the second term of President Medina, which ends in 2020, those planned projects will be realized, which have not yet been completed. One of these plans is the touristic development of the provinces in the southwest, which will be of great benefit for the people living there. The overwhelming beauty of nature in this region has an exceptional touristic potential.

Medical tourism is an international trend. An aging population and better access to Internet infomation add to this development. In many European countries, it is nothing unusual to go to a neighboring country for a dental treatment or plastic surgery, where the same service is offered cheaper or in better quality than at home. At the International Tourism Fair in Berlin (ITB), the largest tourism trade fair in the world, in a talk, experts predicted a growth of 25 percent in this sector in the coming decade. The Dominican Republic has also been trying to gain a foothold in this segment for some time. It can provide well-equipped private practices with the best attention, generally run by specialists who are mostly trained abroad and who have nothing in common with the poor public health system in the country.

Ex-President of Haiti dead René Préval elected twice / Two full Terms in Office / UN Troops MINUSTAH to leave

René Préval, twice President of Haitis, died on his way to the hospital, where he was to be treated for heart problems on the 3rd of March. After the Duvalier dictatorships of Papa Doc and then Baby Doc, Préval was the first president to rule two terms without being overthrown. His first term was from 1996 to 2001 and the second from 2006 to 2011. In his second term occured the earthquake of the 12th of January 2010, which caused devastating damage especially in the capital Port-au-Prince and took the lives of about 300,000 people. Préval is highly respected in the Dominican Republic for thanking the Dominican Republic for its first aid, and which subsequently provided its ports and airfields for international aid. Former President Leonel Fernández described Préval as his personal friend. René Préval was the son of a large landowner and studied agricultural science in Belgium. His family had to leave Haiti in 1963 under the dictatorship of François Duvalier. After living five years in New York, Préval returned to Haiti in 1975 and opened a large bakery in Port-au-Prince in 1988.

Préval became the ally of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, under whom he became Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Defense. After the overthrow of Aristide in 1991 by the military, Préval fled to Washington, where he stayed until 1994. When Aristide was reinstated by the US, Préval became the director of FAES, a government agency financed with loans of 20 million dollars from the World Bank and the IDB. Préval was elected president of Haiti in 1996. In his first term of office, he privatized state enterprises under pressure from the IMF. At the end of his term, the unemployment rate was the lowest since the end of the dictatorship of “Baby Doc” Duvalier. During the 2006 election campaign, Préval dissociated himself from his former ally Aristide and his party Fanmi Lavalas, who, unlike Préval, did not accept the occupation of Haiti by the UN troops (MINUSTAH). After a very controversial election, the election committee declared Préval the winner. After his takeover, there were food riots in Haiti due to the high food prices. After the earthquake in 2010, Haiti descended into chaos. Préval's government failed completely in the organization of the international aid and the United Nations had to raise the MINUSTAH troops by 3,500 more soldiers and policemen. In the past elections in Haiti, René Préval supported the candidate Jude Célestin, who clearly lost against Jovenel Moïse. All the still living former presidents of Haiti honored Préval at his funeral.

After 13 years, the signs are growing that the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) wil finally end this year. The troops, consisting of soldiers from such diverse nations as Uruguay, Brazil, Nepal and Jordan, was sent to Haiti in June 2004 to bring the unrest after President JeanBertrand Aristide's second overthrow under control. Many Haitians consider MINUSTAH as an occupation force and demand that it has to leave the country. In addition, Nepalese soldiers introduced cholera in Haiti in 2010, which until now has killed more than 9,000 people. The United Nations consider the situation in Haiti to be stable enough now, so that the troops are no longer needed. However, the UN will not withdraw their humanitarian help entirely from Haiti. UNICEF or the World Food Program (WFP) will continue to provide help in the poorest country on the American continent. However, President Jovenel Moïse does not regard the country's police as strong enough to maintain order and wants to strengthen the military.

News on Zika Virus is nesting in Testicles / Zika sexually transmitted According to studies in mice by the Yale University, the Zika virus was found in the testes after leaving the bloodstream of the infected animal. Ryuta Uraki, head of the investigation, said, “It has been reported that the virus can still be detected in human sperm after infection for a longer period of time. That was why we suspected it could multiply in the testes, and we have demonstrated it in a model experiment in mice. In the experiment, the Zika virus disappeared from the bloodstream of the

experimental animals, but it lived on in the testes. The gonads shrinked significantly, which according to Uraki points out that cells are dying. In addition, the sperm has a reduced mobility, which can lead to a decrease in fertility. For the researcher Uraki the following questions arise: It would be interesting to know why the Zika virus can survive in the testes and is not destroyed by the immune system. Secondly, are the findings transferable to humans? The Zika virus is usually transmitted by the tiger mosquito (Aedes aegypti), but also by sexual intercourse - from the man to the woman, not vice versa.

Dominican Cuisine Awarded “Capital de la Cultura Gastronómica del Caribe” 2017 A saying mocks, the Dominicans love to eat any kind of meal, as long as it consists of rice, beans and chicken. This is not entirely false, because the “bandera dominicana”, the Dominican flag, is considered the Dominican national dish. And this precisely consists of rice, beans and the accompanying meat mostly is chicken. But of course, the Dominican Republic has far more to offer in culinary specialties than this nutritious poor man's food. Dominican cuisine has now been recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy and the Iberoamerican Academy of Gastronomy as the “Capital of the Gastronomic Culture of the Caribbean”. The President of the Dominican Academy of Gastronomy, Luis Ros, proudly presented the certificate to President Danilo Medina, pointing out that this international recognition also means strengthening the brand name Dominican Republic. And furthermore, it is very valuable for making tourism in the Dominican Repblic even more attractive, above all in Santo Domingo, said Ros.

María Marte, the chef of Madrid's luxury restaurant Club Allard and the only Dominican cook with two Michelin stars, says, “The gastronomy of a country is its people, its colors and its taste. We have all that already. Now, in order to make ourselves more visible in the world, we must transform our own food to compete with other flavors.”

Despite its small territory, the Dominican Republic has a very varied regional cuisine, due to its history and its many cultural influences. There are even remains of the Indian Taíno culture such as “casabe”, a kind of dry and hard bread made from “yuca” (maniok).

From the culinary stock of the Lebanese immigrants who came in the 19th century, are the “quipes”, small cones made of bulgur wheat and minced meat, which are frequently offered by street vendors. In the north-west of the country, with its dry and barren landscape, goat's meat (chivo) is a specialty, spiced with oregano and often also spicily prepared, which is usually not found in the Dominican cuisine. A specialty of the peninsula Samaná with its endless coconut plantations is “pescado con coco” - fish in coconut milk. The Chinese fastfood snacks, which are now to be found almost in every city, serve mostly only “dominicanised” Chinese food. Photos: at the top left: “pastelón de plátano maduro”, mash of ripe plantains, filled with minced meat and gratinated with cheese. Top right: fried fish. Bottom left: “sancocho”, a nutritious soup of root vegetables and meat. Bottom right: The national dish “bandera dominicana”, rice, beans and chicken.

What is this Guy singing? “Dulcito e coco” by Vicente García A rather untypical Dominican musician, away from Merengue and Bachata, is the songwriter Vicente García, who used to play Soul and Funk with the group Calor Urbano, but then returned to his Caribbean roots with a mixture of styles. Dulcito e coco, nada me hace tanta falta como tu. Ay como tu, ay como tu.

I went up to the road which leads me to misery. Instead of stone, instead of asphalt at least give me war. Do not throw me on the ground, do not break the chain. I miss the taste of coconut, the one which is in your gaze. Coconut candy, honey, you are my sweetie, my good. Coconut candy, Like the honeycomb, which gives honey. Coconut candy, Nothing I am missing as much as you. Take me to the road that takes me to your house. Waters of the springs, little flower from my valley, come and take this grief from me, Come, radiate your details. I miss the taste of coconut, the one that is in your gaze. And I miss the taste of coconut, of which I know it is on your lips. Coconut candy, honey, you are my sweetie, my good. Coconut candy, like the honeycomb, which gives honey. Coconut candy, Nothing I am missing as much as you. Coconut candy, honey, you are my sweetie, my good. Coconut candy, like the honeycomb, which gives honey. Coconut candy, nothing I am missing as much as you. Ay, as you, ay, as you.

Vicente Luis García Guillén was born in Santo Domingo on the 30th of March 1983 into a family of artists. His father comes from a family with classical pianists, his mother is a sculptor. At the age of twelve, Vicente stole a classical guitar from an aunt and started to play and compose. At home there was heared music of Herbie Hancock or Peter Gabriel. At the age of 16 he played the music of the time with friends, such as the Deftones. During his studies, it was Reggae and African music, Stevie Wonder became his big idol. In 2002, he founded the group Calor Urbano with three friends, which won several Premios Casandra. In 2008, he accompanied Juan Luis Guerra at the „La Travesía“ tour and noted the international influence of Dominican music. „I started to fall in love with mine, with everything that was already there,“ he recognized. Vicente García also accompanied the Mexican Rock band Maná or the Colombian Juanes. So far, he has released two albums. „Dulcito e coco“ is found on the second one. He currently lives in Bogotá, Colombia.

X-Sudoku

Boring

A pretty young woman and a lawyer sit side by side on the train. The attorney tries to get in contact with her „Would you like to play a game? We ask each other questions - who does not know the answer, pays five dollars to the other.“ The woman is not in the mood for this kind of advances and refuses. But the lawyer keeps trying, „Okay, you get 50 dollars if I do not know the answer, I will get only five.“ Now the woman accepts the offer. The lawyer starts with a very complicated legal question. The woman does not know the answer, of course, and has to pay five dollars to the lawyer. Then it's the pretty woman's turn and she asks, „What has four legs when it goes up the mountain, but only three legs when it comes down?“ The attorney is sweating and thinking hard. In vain. Finally, he gives in and pays the 50 dollars to her. She takes the money and gets up. The attorney takes her hand and asks her, „Wait a minute! What would have been the answer?“ The woman says, „No idea“, pulls away her hand, gives him five dollars and leaves.

Each row, column and square has to contain the numbers from 1 to 9. X-Sudoku must show these numbers also on the two diagonal lines. Solutions on page 14.

When he finally comes home after work in the evening and sees her lying on the sofa, he asks, terrified, “Something happened to Grandma?”

A professor lectures on „involuntary muscular contractions“ at the university before medical students. Since he knows that this is not necessarily the most exciting topic, he decides to make the lecture a little less monotonous with a few brisk quotes. He points to a young female student in the front row and asks her, „Do you know what your asshole is doing while you have an orgasm?“ She replies, „Probably sitting in the pub and drinking beer.“

Why I'm divorced? It was last year on my birthday. Neither my wife nor the kids wished me a happy birthday. Even my colleagues forgot it. As I entered my office, my secretary said, “Happy birthday, boss!” I felt so special. She asked me out for lunch. After lunch, she invited me to her apartment. “Do you mind if I go into the bedroom for a minute?” ”Okay,” I said. She came out 5 minutes later with a birthday cake, my wife, my kids, my friends, my colleagues - all yelling, “Surprise!” And me waiting on the sofa ... naked.
