Scandals continue in the new Year Odebrecht admits Bribery of 92 Million Dollars / “Tucano” Case waiting to be solved

In every nook and corner of the republic, the name of the Brazilian multinational company Odebrecht could be seen at the state construction sites. In the course of the Brazilian corruption scandal „Lava Jato“, the business activities of this international group were examined more closely, and it was found out that Odebrecht had massively bribed politicians in all the countries in which it got construction contracts, in order to compete against competitors. In other countries of Latin America, this had already serious consequences for the company and for the bribed politicians. In the Dominican Republic its activities are still under investigation. Odebrecht, after set

under pressure by the US prosecutor's office, admitted to have paid 92 million dollars of bribes to Dominican politicians. However, the only published name was the businessman Ángel Rondón Rijo, Odebrecht's liaison in the Dominican Republic, who is said to have received this sum in order to redistribute it, so that Odebrecht gets the lucrative construction contracts. Little surprising: Rondón denies. General Prosecutor Jean Alain Rodríguez has interrogated seven high-ranking officials, requested files, searched the premises of Odebrecht, and even invited Víctor Díaz Rúa, one of the closest confidants of former President Leonel Fernández, who has long been suspected of having embezzeled public funds, but his case has already been archived by the courts. The period of the bribes affects three presidencies: Hipólito Mejía, Leonel Fernández and the current President Danilo Medina. Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado (PRD), the most wealthy of all government members, who was Minister of Public Works under President Hipólito Mejía (2000 to 2004), simply refused to work with the prosecutor to clarify the scandal.

Also other festering bribery scandals are currently back in the spotlight, such as the construction of the Punta Catalina coal-fired power plant, which is partly constructed by Odebrecht, and whose construction costs seem farly overpriced at two billion dollars. The purchase of the „Tucanos“, small aircrafts to monitor the airspace, bought from the Brazilian Embraer farly overpriced too, is still far from being solved satisfactorily.

Festival de Ballenas Whale Watching Season in Samaná has begun / Humpback Whales come for Mating The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Tourism officially opened the whale watching season 2017 in Samaná on the 12th of January. The season will last until the 15th of March. The arrival of the humpback whales is celebrated with the sixth edition of the “Festival de Ballenas” (Festival of Whales), which will take place on January 27 and 28. This is followed by the Quelonios Warm Up on Sunday, 29th of January, which aims to strengthen the awareness for the protection of the sea turtles and also to draw attention

to the pollution of the sea through plastic and other waste. This event takes place on the beach of El Valle on the north coast of the peninsula Samaná. On the beach there are sporting activities, yoga, food and music. In the town of Samaná, a statue of a humpback whale is inaugurated at the Malecón on the 27th. On Saturday, the 28th, there are mainly activities for children and young people. Later a folklore ballet will show Dominican dances and the evening is closed by performances of different artists. The event is supported by the Caribbean Program for Marine Diversity, USAID and The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Minister of the Environment, Francisco Domínguez Brito, reminded at the opening of the season, that it is 30 years now when tourists came for the first time to observe

the whales in the Bay of Samaná. At that time, it was just a little over a hundred visitors. In the 2016 season there were 55,000 guests from home and abroad who came to observe the giant sea-mammals. The humpback whales arrive in January from the icy waters of the North Atlantic to mate in the warm waters. They also give birth here, because the fat layer of the calves would not protect them yet from the cold in the North Atlantic. The whales can be observed both from an observatory on land as well as from boats.

Keep on rolling! The year 2016 was a difficult one in many aspects, not only for LA PLAYA. It was not easy to make ends meet during summer. Several times, good friends came to the aid. Hereby I want to thank them. Without them, possibly would have happened before what was happening with the edition of December 21: It was not printed. This was due to the immense problems of the printing company, which I don't want to go into detail. In any case, the issue was finished by me punctual as usual and available on the Internet at www.laplaya-dominicana.com. With this first issue of 2017, I hope that everything will come back on track, and I would like to apologize and ask for your understanding. It was also good to see that LA PLAYA is still attractive to the readers after more than seven years, because I was continually asked when the next issue will be published. And for lack of the new issue, many readers took an older one in the office. Werner Rümmele, Editor

Damage caused by Rain 30 Percent of exportable Organic Bananas were destroyed The extremely strong and long-lasting rains of this season, which have been falling since November, have led to huge losses in plantains, a basic foodstuff of the Dominican Republic, especially in the north of the country. But also the export of bananas to Europe, especially to the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands, which are the main buyers of Dominican bananas, has suffered immense losses. 700 tons are exported to these three countries alone. 60 percent of these bananas come from organic cultivation. So the producers report that they have a 30 percent loss through the rain, because the ongoing rain has literally “drowned” 90,000 tareas, about 5,700 hectares or 610 million square feet. The Dominican Association of Banana Producers (Adobanano) estimates the loss of organic bananas exported to Europe to around 1.6 million dollars per week. There is also the risk of losing these customers if the delivery contracts can not be met, since they then will be supplied elsewhere.

The most affected areas are Villa González, with a high concentration in La Colonia, Cerro Gordo, Piloto in Mao, as well as Hatillo Palma in Montecristi and Palo Verde in La Castañuela. Alone from here come 95 percent of the production of the Dominican organic bananas, one of the ten most exported products of the Dominican Republic. Plantations near the rivers have lost almost everything. Another problem with organic bananas is the increased fungal attack caused by the damp weather, which can not be combated by conventional chemical fungicides.

Jovenel Moïse new President End of an agonizingly long Election Period / Senator Guy Philippe deported to the USA After several demurred and annulled elections which furthermore were delayed for years, Haiti finally managed to get a new president who will take office on the 7th of February. Jovenel Moïse is a member of the same

party, PHTK, of Michel Martelly, who resigned from office last January, although no new president was elected yet. Since then Interim President Jocelerme Privert ran the country and held elections in November, which Jovenel Moïse won with more than 55 percent of the votes. The Provisional Electoral Commission (CEP) finally concluded that the election was valid, despite the fact that there were some irregularities.

After his arrest, the Haitian militia officer Guy Philippe, who participated in the overthrow of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004, and was elected Senator in November, was deported to the U.S.

Breast Cancer Most common Cancer in the Country / Treatment often too late / Poverty main Reason According to the statistics of the Oncological Institute Dr. Heriberto Pieter, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the Dominican Republic, followed by cervical, prostate, skin and colorectal cancer. More and more, relatively young women are suffering from breast cancer. 14.48 percent of them are between 31 and 40 years old. Doctor José Ernesto Ramírez Féliz, surgeon and medical director of the institute, and

George Gil from the Registry of the Health Center, said that these data are only the ones treated in this center. That is between 30 and 35 percent of the cases from across the country. As with all types of cancer, it is important to recognize breast cancer in an early stage, which unfortunately is not the case for various reasons. In addition, the tissue samples can not be analyzed in the country, but must be sent abroad, which causes further delays in diagnosis. Dr. Ramírez Féliz says that a large proportion of the women who are ill are only visiting the doctor, when the cancer has already progressed. More than half of these women already have cancer in the third stage when they come to a first medical check-up. Primarily, this is for financial reasons, regrets the doctor. “More than 50 percent are at a stage when the cancer is no longer curable.” He says that many of the cancers can be treated without huge costs if discovered early. He urged the government to spend more on the timely detection of breast cancer. There must be equipment in every health

center in the country to carry out and analyze tissue samples. It was unjust if, for example, a woman from Elías Piña has to travel to the capital if she wants to have a mammography done. Every woman should be examined for breast cancer once a year from her 40 th birthday. In cases of illness in the family, this should already be done starting at 35 in order to detect malignant tumors on time. The specialist said that women suffering from breast cancer, often afterwards also are suffering from cervical cancer or skin and colorectal cancer. Besides the early discovery one should pay attention to a healthy way of life, which helps to avoid cancer, the doctor advises. People should move and eat foods with little fat, but plenty of fiber. In addition, alcohol and nicotine should be avoided.

What are these Guys singing? “Mi princesa” by Revolución Salsera Currently one of the most popular Salsas is from Revolución Salsera, founded by ex-members of Chiquito Team Band. No valían nada.

If you once felt excited and you watched the stars in your face. If that guy has dared to hurt you he is worth nothing. If you think he deserves your caresses after he cheated on you with that chick. It is classy not to fight among women for some caresses. If you knew how I want to hold your hands and take you to the stars. Whatever, I would give anything to bite your lips and kiss them whenever I wanted. Stop crying for a coward, who even damaged the heart of a princess. You don't have to justify yourself, that he removed the mascara in the middle of a party. You should look for someone like me. I want you to be my princess. If the coward didn't tell you in your face. If he's such a man, why didn't he tell you anything? That's why his caresses where so strange. They were worthless. Let him go! Leave that guy, let him go! Leave, leave, let him go, if he damages your heart. Let him go! Leave that guy, let him go! Give yourself value, let him go now. See, the one who loves you is me. From the heart. Revolución Salsera Doble U, Nueva Era. Let him go! Leave that guy, let him go! If he is unfaithful to you, please, go away from him. Let him go! Leave that guy, let him go! If he treats you bad, let him go. Revolución Salsera La Nueva Era.

Alberto María, Kelvin Saviñón and Lugo Santana parted in anger from the successful Salsa group Chiquito Team Band in 2015 to go their own way. With the Salsa producer and Salsa vocalist Víctor Weill (LA PLAYA 96) they produced their first hit “La última noche”, a cover version of Diego Torres' hit (LA PLAYA 165). The three musicians parted from the Chiquito Team Band because they did not earn enough. They were friends of the other members of the band and were paid a thousand pesos per evening. When the Chiquito Team Band became more and more successful in the course of the Dominican Salsa Revival, they still got paid the same musician's fee. So they left their old group, who insulted them as “ungrateful”. But they did not even have a contract with the Chiquito Team Band. The demerit of many of the new Salsa hits is, they are quite unimaginative, as the hits of others are simply converted to a Salsa, which also Revolución Salsera did with “El amor es libre” by Yoskar Sarante, or also this presented song “Mi princesa”, which in the original is sung by the Mexican Remmy Valenzuela.

Three Marines are ordered to the Commander after their last mission. „Soldiers, for your outstanding achievements, the President wants to give you a special reward! You will be measured and will receive 1,000 dollars for each measured centimeter!“ He asks the first soldier, „Soldier, how do you want me to measure you?“ The soldier stands upright and replies: „Sir, from the tip of my toes to the tips of my hair, Sir!" Said and done. The Commander measures 185 centimeters and hands the soldier 185,000 dollars. Then he asks the second one. This one thinks, I'm smarter than the first one. So he stands upright, raises his left arm and says, „Sir, from the tip of my toes to the fingertips, sir!“ Again the commander measures: 235 centimeters. He hands the soldier 235,000 dollars. The third one is an old black Sergeant, who answers the question, „Sir, from the tip of my dick to my balls, Sir!“ Commander: „Are you sure, Sergeant?“ The Sergeant: „Yes, Sir!“ Commander: „Then let's do it!“ The Sergeant opens his pants, pulls out his best piece, and the commander puts the tape measure. Suddenly he stops and asks, „Sergeant, where are your balls?“ „Sir, in Iraq, Sir!“

Each row, column and square has to contain the numbers from 1 to 9. X-Sudoku must show these numbers also on the two diagonal lines. Solutions on page 14.

On their way to the church to get married, a young couple has a deadly car accident. Shortly thereafter, the two find themselves in front of the Pearly Gates, waiting for Saint Peter. They think it would be nice now to marry in Heaven when they get in. When Saint Peter appears at the gate, they ask him if that is possible. Saint Peter replies, “I can not answer your question because I hear it for the first time. Wait here, I'll try to figure it out.” Then he goes away. The couple is sitting in front of the Pearly Gates, waiting and waiting. For a long time there is nothing to see of Saint Peter. They ponder and think that if they can get married, it should also be possible to divorce in heaven, if the marriage does not work. After twelve days, Saint Peter comes back to the Pearly Gates, exhausted. “Yes,” he says, still gasping for air. “You can get married here.” “That's great,” the woman replies. “And if the marriage does not work, can we also get a divorce?” Saint Peter gasps and throws his heavenly key angrily to the ground. The couple gets frightened, and the man anxiously asks, “What's going on?” Saint Peter is put out and curses: “You can't be serious! I have been searching for twelve days now to find a priest up here to answer your question. What do you think, how long I'll have to search now until I find a lawyer?”
