Official Final Results Most Senators and Deputies re-elected / Allegations are going on / JCE unable to pay
After a completely chaotic week and a half, the Electoral Commission (JCE) was finally able to announce the official results of the general elections of 15 May. Accordingly, President Danilo Medina won the presidential election with 61.74 percent. He received the votes of 2,847,414 voters. Challenger Luis Abinader came to a total of 1,613,207 votes, representing 34.98 percent of the valid votes. The ruling party PLD will lead the Senate in the coming four years. Of the total of 32 senators, 28 belong to the ruling party. In the Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados) it looks similar. Of the 190 deputies, 110 belong to the PLD. In addition, 17 come from the ally PRD, which makes a total of 127. The votes for the former big people's party sank to a meager five percent now.
By press time, the discussions and protests against the elections still continued. Several results from districts in Santo Domingo were invalidated. However, new elections are not necessary because they would not change any of the results. Roberto Rosario (photo), chairman of the JCE, who is blamed by opposition parties as the guilty of the chaos caused shortly after the elections, caused even more ire with a comment on a post of his daughter on twitter. He thanks her, that what she, who lives in the United States, has written, gave him an unexpected lesson. “But I prefer that you are far away from this jungle.” Meanwhile, it was announced that the JCE has not left a single peso due to the spendings in the elections. In order to pay the staff, the JCE had to be take a loan of 175 million pesos from the pension fund. The employees of the JCE were asked not to make any more overtime since they cannot be paid. The working hours had to be respected carefully.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) congratulated President Danilo Medina on his re-election and promised to support him further, in the way in which he sees fit. His re-election was the result of his leadership and the implementation of a policy that helps to promote the strong growth of the country. None of the opposing candidates congratulated the president for his victory, except his former ally Hatuey de Camps (PRSC). At the same time, de Camps offered him his services. A group of Christian organizations were among the first who auditioned the President to congratulate him. Pastor Jenny de Reynoso as a member of the Association People of God said after the courtesy visit to the President: “We congratulated him on his election and gave him spiritual and emotional support, so that he knows he has a people who trusted him, who is the citizen number one, and we pray, that God gives him the necessary wisdom.”

National Hero Imbert Barreras dead 39 Percent covered with Forest / Pro Consumidor: 85 Percent false Publicity on Mother's Day
One day after the 55th anniversary of the assassination of the dictator Rafael Trujillo on May 30, 1961, died the last surviving assassin, Antonio Imbert Barrera, who bore the official title of National Hero, at the age of 96 years. President Danilo Medina ordered three days of national mourning. After the tyrant found his well-deserved end in a hail of bullets of assassins on the Malecón in Santo Domingo on his way home to San Cristóbal, Trujillo's military intelligence SIM launched a merciless retaliation hunt for the participants of the command. Of the six bombers survived only Imbert Barrera and Luis Amiama Tió who died in 1980. Imbert Barrera was President of the Dominican Republic from May to August 1965, after he took part in the overthrow of the elected president Juan Bosch in 1963, which triggered the Revolution of 1965 with the subsequent US invasion. He survived being shot several times in 1967. From 1986 to 1988 he was Minister of Defense.
President Danilo Medina planted a mahogany tree (caoba) in the presence of Environment Minister Bautista Rojas Gómez on the 6th of June, the World Environment Day, in the Parque Mirador del Este in Santo Domingo, to underline his commitment to environmental protection. With various events it was tried to increase people's awareness of environmental protection, so that they change their behavior and do something positive for the environment. Bautista Rojas said: “Our country is covered by forest to 39 percent and is thus one of the countries that comply with the Millennium Development Goals.” Thisgoal is to cover 34 percent. “And more than 25 percent of the forests we have are under protection.” The Minister also mentioned that more than 50 million new trees have been planted and that ecosystems have been restored. The events had the motto “Enloquezca con la Vida, el futuro de la vida silvestre está en nuestras manos” (Go crazy with life, the future of nature is in our hands.) The environmental and recreational activities were funded by the UN organization UNDP and ECORED.
The consumer protection organization Pro Consumidor lamented that 85 percent of businesses have not followed the guidelines for advertising on Mother's Day, which is celebrated in the Dominican Republic on the last Sunday in May, to a greater or lesser extent. Only 15 percent of the businesses advertized their products truthfully. Pro Consumidor controlled many businesses that had the greatest customer influx. Advertising specialists tested randomly in different department stores to see if they have fallen into illegal trade practices or deceptive advertising by comparing, for example, an advertisement with the actual prices in the store. Besides trifles they found the usual fraud with super offers of articles that they do not have in stock, or the phrase “while stocks last” to attract customers that otherwise would not have entered the store, to the wrong price labeling or “We are not responsible for typographical errors”.

There are already present several real estate companies that have recognized the future prospects of the small, yet quiet location, only a few kilometers west of the city of Puerto Plata. Their deals are usually objects such as housing complexes or exclusive villas which will be sold for sure.
But who prefers the original, individual style, also has the possibility to find something special, a little bit off the new housing areas for foreigners. For example, a piece of land from the best, only about five minutes away from the port area. The foreign resident, who himself lives there for several years, offers 600 square meters or more of his property for sale. The plot is completely flat, but never flooded, even in days of heavy rainfall. It is completely surrounded by a wall. Uninterrupted water supply is guaranteed because it has its own well. The location is quiet, because all the neighbors are old-established families from Maimón, which for years are working in tourism, such as employees in the RIU hotels or as taxi drivers, or they have their own business. There is absolutely no traffic noise, except for a now and then passing motorcycle, although the plot is virtually on the main street Puerto Plata - Santiago. But it can be reached only on a short paved, flat access road, and there is no through-going traffic.
The road is cleaned every day by workers of the ocal authorities of Maimón and waste collection comes three times a week. Life is quiet, in a tropical relaxed environment. The sea cannot be seen, but gentle, green hills. There is nothing more peaceful than to sit on the balcony listening to birds. Who still needs the sea, gets to the beaches of Maimon, Costambar or Cofresí in a few minutes. To get to Sosúa it takes an hour. In 1869, not quite a century and a half ago, Santo Domingo, as the Dominican Republic was then called, signed a Treaty of Annexation with the colossus to the north, the United States of America. The treaty called for eventual United States statehood. Although only 30% of Dominicans voted in the referendum held to approve the treaty, 99% who did vote voted in favor. Ulysses S. Grant, hero of Vicksburg and Appomattox, then the President of the United States, favored the treaty. In 1869 neither Puerto Rico nor the U. S. Virgin Islands were United States territories. Annexing “Santo Domingo” would have provided the United States a strong presence in the Caribbean, including, of strategic importance as Grant emphasized, a naval base in the Samana peninsula. The Senate had overwhelming approved the purchase of Alaska from Russia just the year before. Adding territory in the Caribbean to serve as a southeast bookend to the new northwest territory seemed to many to make geographical as well as geopolitical sense, sand and surf to balance snow and tundra. Despite President Grant’s strenuous efforts, however, the United States Senate refused to provide the
two-thirds support required by the United States’ Constitution; the treaty died in a tie vote, 28 – 28. And so, except for the United States invading, as the United States is wont to do in the Caribbean from time to time, in 1916 and 1965, “Santo Domingo” and the United States have gone their separate ways. Nearly a century and a half has now passed. Depending on how you look at it, either salvation was spurned or disaster was averted. What do you think? Peru has voted Pedro Pablo Kuczynski new President / After Cancellation, Elections in Haiti in October After counting 94.1 percent of the vote in the elections in Peru, there was an extremely thin lead of Pedro Pablo Kuzcynski against Keiko Fujimori. The Electoral Board (JNE) of the Andean country asked the public to wait until the final results. Kuczynski had 50.28 percent, Fujimori, who was first in the first ballot was at 49.72 percent. Also, none of the two candidates declared himself the winner prematurely. With PPK, as Kuczynski is called shortly, the next Latin American country is going from a leftist government to economic liberals. The full ballot count will probably not be finished until the weekend. Ballots, mostly from Peruvians living in the United States and Europe, were still arriving. A count of about 80 percent of U.S. votes showed Kuczynski with an eight-point lead over Fujimori, and also a partial count of votes

Due to sickness of the editor, LA PLAYA could not be printed in time and distributed the scheduled date. Since LA PLAYA is made by one single person, things are getting critical immediately if this person gets sick. So the color pages were already finished and sent to the printing - the reason why there is still the date of issue 8th of June. But before the center pages in black and white could be written, the editor fell sick and was forced to stop his work for several days completely. So the printer couldn't finish his job and the magazine could not be distributed. Probably it's only three days late. The next issue will be distributed normally on June 22. Kuczynski has promised to invest in infrastructure projects and lower sales taxes to revive economic growth that has slowed with tumbling mineral prices. A week ago, Keiko Fujimori had been the favorite to win. But Kuczynski caught up with her in final opinion polls as Peruvians weighed the legacy of her father, Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for directing death squads, embezzlement and bribery. But some Peruvians credit the elder Fujimori with defeating the violent Shining Path guerillas that had the country under a state of emergency with murders and terror attacks, and building rural schools during his decade-long rule. The Kuczynski campaign was significantly boosted by the endorsement of Veronika Mendoza, the former presidential candidate for the leftist Frente Amplio coalition. She exhorted Peruvians to vote for PPK to block a return to power for the Fujimori dynasty. “We cannot allow Fujimorismo to return to power. It not only represents corrupt practices but a terrible dictatorship.” A cut was made now by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) in Haiti. To end the tricky situation after the electoral disaster in the past year, the CEP now decided to annul the whole ballot and called for new elections on the 9th of October. For a possible runoff has been set the 8th of January 2016. Opponents of the previous President Michel Martelly accused him, he had helped the candidate of his party PHTK, Jovenel Moise, to get the most votes through electoral fraud in the first ballot on the 25 th of
October 2015. A runoff election was not possible, as the second, Jude Célestin, part of the so-called G-7, the candidates of the opposition parties, prevented everything Martelly tried to solve. Also a last attempt of the outgoing Martelly to perform presidential elections before his departure, they prevented successfully. The opposition accused Martelly of wanting to stay president with all the tricks, but his term ended constitutionally and without causing a stir on the 7th of February. Since there was no new elected president, Jocelerme Privert took office as interim president to finally carry out the elections. A truth commission found so many irregularities during the verifications that it recommended new elections. Privert's tenure as interim president ends now, and now it is the PHTK that accuses him of wanting to stay in power with tricks. At least until after the elections he will probably do so.

After the proclamation of an international health emergency, a group of experts of the World Health Organization (WHO) said, Zika perhaps had evolved to a new birth syndrome. WHO has startd a process, intending to define the spectrum of this syndrome. This focuses on the preparation of maps and an analysis of diseases, which is including neurological, auditory, visual and other anomalies. It will
include more new information and observe affected babies over a longer time. In Brazil, where Zika last year appeared on the American continent for the first time, 1,403 cases of microcephaly have now been officially registered, of children who were born with to small heads. Another dangerous disease that can be caused by the usually harmless course of Zika, is the Guillain-BarrĂŠ syndrome, which can cause a paralysis that can lead to cardiac and respiratory arrest. Only this year, already nine people died in the
Dominican Republic from this disease. Since the first appearance of Zika in the country, 123 contiguous cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome have been registered. Most cases are registered in the provinces of Independencia and Santo Domingo, followed by Ă zua, Valverde and the National District. According to new findings of the WHO, Zika is transmitted much more frequently by sexual intercourse, than previously thought. A pregnancy after having suffered from Zika, therefore should be postponed not just four, but eight weeks. In order to strengthen the country's image as a healthy and safe tourist destination, there were established strategic hygienic alliances in tourist areas.

Premios Soberano Gran Soberano for Fefita For the second consecutive time, a Dominican living in the United States was chosen “Nuestra Belleza Latina” (Our Latin Beauty). After Francisca Lachapel, now Clarissa Molina, born in Santiago, who was representing the province of Espaillat already at the contest Miss República Dominicana last year, when she won the first place, managed to get 53 percent of the vote in the reality show of the television channel Univision, where she participated since January. 24-year-old Clarissa Molina gets 200,000 dollars as prize money, a Kia Optima and an annual contract of Univision. At the age of twelve years, the parents of Clarissa Molina separated and moved to New York. Clarissa remained with her brother and a sister-in-law, until she went to New York at the age of 15. In the show Nuestra Belleza Latina, the candidates have to prove their talent, their skills and their power. Clarissa Molina said in her first interview after the victory, it was her destiny to win this prize. When Univision called her last year, she could not participate because she had already signed a contract with Miss República Dominicana.
After years of hope, the Musician of Merengue típico, Fefita la Grande, often less respectfully called “La vieja Fefa” (the old Fefa), finally got the awaited Gran Soberano, the highest price Dominican artists can receive in their own country. The accordionist and singer started her career in the fiftees at the age of twelve. Among the other winners, there were no big surprises, Raulín Rodríguez, Miriam Cruz, … Romeo Santos ... Mozart La Para managed to win the Soberano of the audience for the second time in a row .

Latinos singing Creedence Clearwater Revival. Artists as diverse as Juan Gabriel (photo), Juanes or Enrique Bunbury are interpreting the hits of most popular Californian band of the sixties and seventies in their own way. So Juan Gabiel sings “Gracias al sol” (Have You Ever Seen The Rain). The album “Quiero Creedence” will be officially released on the 27th of July.
The Argentine Pop star Diego Torres (see LA PLAYA 165) stays firm in his social responsibility in areas such as gender equality, peace and human rights, even 15 years after the release of his album “Color esperanza”. In an interview during his Columbia tour, the winner of three Latin Grammys said, he sing of feelings and emotions, but there are also many problems, where it is difficult to find an answer. But in all these things he finds his inspiration. For which his new album “Buena vida” was the proof. He will present this album internationally on a world tour in the next two years. Torres was presented as an ambassador of the campaign “He for She” in Latin America and the Caribbean by the UN organization for women in Bogotá. The search for gender equality was something with which he was very identifiable and he found it “strange” that still existed expressions of machismo. “I've written songs that deal with the woman. This is very important in my life. It always has been and always will be, because I have a daughter, a wife and a mother.”

Initially the producer of Ana Gabriel tried to urge her to make her songs, almost all of them are self-composed, more commercial for the huge Latin American and US market. But she refused, and the success proves that she was right.

María Guadalupe Araújo Yong was born in Guamúchil in the Mexican state of Sinaloa on the 10th of December 1955. At the age of ten she was on stage, after she already discovered at the age of six that her life will be singing and composing. She never took music lessons, but her maternal grandfather, a Chinese immigrant, gave her first advices when she started to compose. At the age of 15, Ana Gabriel, as she calls herself as an artist, moved to the border city of Tijuana together with her parents in search of a better life. It was not until 1984, when she started to sing in public. Before she only composed. The result are countless national and international awards of any kind.
