Violence in the Election Campaign Candidate shot dead in Mediation Attempt / Bishops against US Ambassador Brewster Political analyst César Pérez told the news agency EFE, the Dominican policy had reached a level of degeneration that seems to be irreversible. In Dominican politics there are candidates who represent the worst interests. People of dubious reputation will be elected in the coming elections. The Foundation Law and Transparency (FJT) lamented the violence in the election campaign and called on the Central Election Commission JCE, who is organizing the electoral process, to sort out the candidates of the different political parties “with tweezers”. The murder of Mateo Aquino Febrillet (photo), former rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and candidate for Senator of the opposition party PRM must serve the political class for reflection.

Aquino Febrillet was shot when he tried to mediate between two candidates for the House of Representatives. One of the two, Blas Peralta, president of the transport union Fenatrado, suspect of a number of criminal activities, is accused to have shot. Fenatrado defends its president and says Blas Peralta defended himself from alleged “political adversaries” without telling names. Another case is the complaint of the family of the mayor of La Romana (east), Tony Adames, who accuses the deputy of the PRSC, Pedro Botella, to have shot at their house because he did not agree with the proposals who will be vice mayor. In December, two men were killed during the primaries of the ruling party PLD. Senate President Cristina Lizardo therefore called on the candidates to serenity, they should be forgiving and not be carried away by passion. “In the elections you will always find people who disagree with you,” she says. Political organizations should be careful when chosing their candidates.

The visit of a school in Santiago by US Ambassador James “Wally” Brewster, accompanied his husband Bob Satawake, has caused strong reactions in conservative circles of the country. More than 30,000 people signed a petition on the website of the White House, which calls to recall Brewster because he was abusing his office to promote the Agenda LGBT and thus works against the cultural and traditional values of the country. The Dominican Episcopal Conference demanded in a letter to the government to reject the “interference” of the American ambassador who was trying to confuse children and adolescents by showing a distorted picture of the family and disregarding the local laws.

Awarded on ITB Best Video in 4D Format / 100 Millions of Dollars invested / Punta Cana awarded

At the ITB (International Tourism Fair) in Berlin, the largest tourism fair in the world, the Dominican Republic was awarded the prize “The Golden City Gate” for the best video in 4D format. The award-winning video “The Battle of Santo Domingo” tells the story of the invasion of Santo Domingo by the English privateer Francis Drake in 1536. The video has a duration of 14 minutes. The video can be seen in Santo Domingo in the Colonial Gate Cinema 4D in the Zona Colonial in nine languages, which is the first 4D cinema in the Caribbean, located at the corner Isabel La Católica and Padre Billini. It is open from 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.

At the opening of a restaurant in the shopping street El Conde in Santo Domingo, Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García Fernández said, private investors have invested more than 100 million dollars since the start of the renovation of the historic Colonial Town (Zona Colonial). The number of tourists had increased since then. Furthermore, he said, eleven percent of the tourists who visited the Dominican Republic, came to see the Zona Colonial. Last year, 616,000 visitors enjoyed the beauty of the first city of the New World. In a survey of visitors, 98 percent of the tourists said they would not regret the visit, 87 percent want to recommend the destination Santo Domingo to others. In September last year in a count it was found out that the number of new businesses has increased by 23 percent in the Colonial Zone. According to Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García Fernández, Santo Domingo has the best gastronomy per square kilometer and inhabitants in all of the countries of Latin America.

The Punta Cana International Airport was awarded the “Airport Service Quality (ASQ)” as one of the three best in the Caribbean and Latin America. The award was handed over by the Airports Council International (ACI). Airports from all around the world participated in the competition, 17 of them from the Caribbean and Latin America. The participating airports were evaluated analyzing the opinion of passengers based on 34 key indicators on the quality of management and service. Frank Ranieri, vice president of the Group Puntacana, said, this recognition reaffirms the commitment to have the best airport infrastructure of the Caribbean.

Historic Visit Barack Obama in Cuba / Cuban Exiles demonstrate / Demanding End of US Embargo It is reported that in 1973, Fidel Castro cynically said in an interview with British journalist Brian Davis: “The US will come to talk to us when they have a black president and the world has a Latin American pope.” It was not thought as a prophecy, as many see it now, but something what was simply unthinkable in 1973.

Fortunately, history does not stop and even mortal enemies sometimes are able to recognize that hatred is not a permanent solution. Sometimes it just takes a long time, as in the case of the United States and Cuba. But now large parts of the United States seem to have realized that it is time to redefine the relationship between the two countries. But it is not easy to convince the diehards through reason. As if the 50 years lasting isolation of the Caribbean island would have brought the slightest progress, in particular for the people of Cuba, for whom the Cuban exiles ostensibly are fighting, the opponents of US president Obama's three-days visit as the first US President in 88 years who visited the neighboring country, were at their best. Ted Cruz, Republican pre-candidate for the US presidency and son of a Cuban who emigrated to the United States, called Obama's visit Cuba a “bad show” that will enrich the dictatorship in Cuba and make it more powerful. Furthermore Cuba would export terrorism to Latin America, an old and long time refuted accusation.

Somewhat illogically, Cruz said he was the son of a Cuban who was beaten and tortured under the regime of dictator Fulgencio Batista - it is well known that Batista was overthrown by Fidel Castro - because he joined Castro's revolutionaries when he was 14 years old. In Little Havana in Miami, hundreds of Cuban exiles demonstrated against Obama's visit. They called Obama a miserable traitor, a Communist and a Castroite. Furthermore, it was a slap to Obama's face that he was not received by Cuba's President Raúl Castro on his arrival at the airport not. The other Republican pre-candidate Donald Trump said, in such an “affront” he immediately would have boarded his plane and flewn back. The private meeting of Obama and Castro so far was the highlight of the rapprochement process initiated in 2014. Obama spoke directly to the Cuban people and demanded to bury the “remnants of the Cold War”. He admitted mistakes and urged the US Congress, to end the blockade of Cuba, since the isolation of Cuba did not have the expected effects. Raúl Castro said the US embargo is the most important obstacle to Cuba's economic growth. That is why he asked to end the embargo, as well as he demanded the withdrawal of the United States from Guantánamo, which is on Cuban territory.

Cannabis Medication Brazil's Health Ministry allows Medical Marijuana / Derivatives do not cause Addiction One country after another starts cautious experiments with medical marijuana. After Chile, Puerto Rico, Colombia and others, now the National Agency for Health Surveillance (Anvis) in Brazil gave the permission to import drugs and other products that contain cannabis. Anvis wrote in a press release that doctors may prescribe these drugs and patients could import them if they are used to treat diseases and for individual use.

Anvis is an agency affiliated to the Ministry of Health, and it stressed that it could not give any information about the efficacy or safety of these products, because none of them was registered in the country. “Many of these products were not registered as medicines in their countries of origin and not reviewed by any medical authority. Last year in January, Anvis took cannabidiol out of the list of banned substances and allows it now as a chemical constituent of controlled drugs.

According to Anvis, clinical studies have shown that cannabis derivatives do not cause addiction, which is why a ban can no longer be justified. Cannabidiol has an antispasmodic, antiinflammatory, anxiolytic effect and helps to fight nausea. It has been proven that it helps in certain forms of epilepsy in children, it lowers intraocular pressure in glaucoma, in multiple sclerosis it is used as antispasmodic, it helps cancer and AIDS patients against nausea and stimulates the appetite. In Brazil, the cultivation, sale and possession of "maconha" remains a punishable offense, but in Congress a number of projects are to be debated, such as how marijuana can be decriminalized.

The Lobster Close Season until June 30 / From Pig Feed to Gourmet Food / Protest against Lobster The first European settlers on the Atlantic coast in New England and Canada reported that there was a plague of lobsters, that along the beaches they were wading kneedeep in the animals. The native Indians took lobsters to fertilize their fields or as bait for fishing. The settlers feeded their pigs with lobsters. Losters were considered the food of the poor. They were given to children, the inmates in the prisons and the servants who had to serve seven years to work off the cost of their passage to America. The reputation of lobster was so bad that in Massachusetts servants in households rebelled and attained that according to their employment contracts lobsters were not allowed more than three times a week on their menu. John J. Rowan, an English observer of North American customs, wrote in 1876 that lobster shells before houses were considered a sign of poverty and degradation. The lobster was called “cockroach of the sea”. In addition to the oyster, another social parasite of the sea, which also rose from the food of the poor to gourmet food, the lobster was unwanted by the fishermen, because they wanted to catch fish, not lobsters. However, the reputation of lobster began to change in the late 19th century, when industrialization progressed. With the first cannery in Maine in 1841, lobsters were transported to the west in cans with the also new railway. This increased the demand for

the cheap food and, according to it, the price. Added to this came the beginning of tourism. The staff in the dining cars of the trains had the idea to offer lobster to the traveler, who often did not know the bad reputation of this crustacean, served with herb butter on a throne made of porcelain and silver as a royal menu. And since lobster really does not taste bad, restaurants in Maine started to offer lobster with pomp and ceremony to the well-heeled tourists from the southern states, who preferred to come to the temperate climate of the North during the hot summer. On their return these travelers did not want to miss this delicacy any more. With the advent of the refrigeration of food, it was possible to ship lobster to England, where the gourmets were ready to pay ten times the price. Over time, lobster changed from being the poor man's food to a delicacy that only the rich could afford.

In the decadent twenties, the demand for the crustacean reached its first climax, interrupted by the Great Depression. But in the fifties, the lobster was able to strengthen its reputation as a food of kings, or at least of the wealthy and Hollywood stars. Due to the high demand of lobster, it now is threatened in parts of the Caribbean, so that for several years a closed season for lobster was introduced between the 1st of March and the 30th of June. During this time lobsters are in their highest reproductive period and to catch them obstructs this vital cycle and puts its survival in risk. Lobster has not only fans, but it is also regarded as overvalued, such as from the sharp tongued British-American author Christopher Hitchens, who died in 2011. He said: “The four most overrated things in life are champagne, lobster, anal sex and picnics.”

“América Latina Olé Tour”

50 Years in Music Business

Kristhielee Caride Dethroned Miss Puerto Rico The dinosaurs of all Rock bands now performed the last concert of their “América Latina Olé Tour 2016” in Cuba's capital Havana on the 25th of March - for free. The tour of the Rolling Stones started in early February in Chile, then they came to Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Mexico, before it ended in Havana in a show with 200,000 fans, which will be found in the history books, like many other events that currently are happening in Cuba. Shortly before, 60,000 fans in Mexico City witnessed a larksome Mick Jagger making jokes in Spanish about the interview of Sean Penn with the then fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán: “Sean Penn came for an interview to my hotel, but I escaped.” The Stones gave two concerts in Mexico, where they performed for the first time since 2006. In Bogotá, Mick Jagger caused laughter when he said, the band supported the Colombian economy for many years. The same he said in Mexico, but there he referred to Tequila.

Four months ago Kristhielee Caride (left) was crowned Miss Puerto Rico. Everything seemed to go well for the 24-year-old beauty until she told a local newspaper she hated cameras. The owners of the competition asked for an apology from Caride which she did not give. She just said she had personal problems that day, but that would not be repeated. This was not accepted, because Miss Puerto Rico was a public figure and because her job is to work in front of cameras. It is the second time that a Miss Puerto Rico was fired. The first was Brenda Robles who had to leave in 1994 because she was pregnant. Brenda Jiménez (right) now is the new Miss Puerto Rico 2016.

Omega Violence against Woman? Antonio Peter de la Rosa, known as Omega “El Fuerte”, handed himself in, after a warrant to respond to renewed allegations of violence against a woman. Omegas stepfather said: “They throw stones at a good tree. All what these women say, is an invention. He gives his money for children without documents. And when they want money, they invent something.”

Willie Colón is one of the greatest of Salsa. The trumpeter, who was born in New York as the son of Puerto Rican parents, will celebrate his 50th anniversary in the music business in November at the Coliseo in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Colón has released more than 40 albums during his career. His heyday was in the Seventies, when he produced with the late Héctor Lavoe (“Calle Luna, Calle Sol”) and Celia Cruz (“Usted abusó”), or with Rubén Blades, with whom he later completely fell out, when Salsa hits like “Pedro Navaja”, “Tiburón” or “Ligia Elena”, the story of a girl from a good family, who abandons her life of luxury for a trumpeter, were heard in every corner of Latin America. “This whole story is recorded in a complete repertoire, which was prepared especially for the occasion,” said Osvaldo Rocafort, whose firm Lana Productions is organizing the event. Willie Colón also is active politically. In 1999, he was one of the participants of the delegation Jubilee 2000, a movement of 40 countries, that called for the suspension of Third World debt at the turn of the millennium. Result: President Clinton renounced 14 percent of the debt to the United States.

Was singt denn die?

Was interessiert mich die ganze Welt?

Piggish

X-Sudoku

Unbelievable

A farmer wins 1,500 euros in a lottery. When the money courier hands him over three 500-euro notes, they fall out of the farmer's hand, just in front of his big, fat pig, which immediately snaps and swallows the three bills. The farmer is horrified, but the money courier knows what to do. „Give the pig a corn schnapps and then kick it in its hindquarters, then it will puke the bills.“ Because the farmer has no corn schnapps in his house, he pulls the pig on a rope to the nearest pub, where he orders a beer for himself and a corn schnapps for his pig. He drinks beer in one go and gives the corn schnapps to the pig. Then he kicks the pig's derriere with full force, after which it vomits a 500 euro bill. The innkeeper is impressed and asks the farmer if he would sell the pig. „Not for sale“, says the farmer, and ordered another beer and corn schnapps. After the same procedure the pig vomits again a 500 euro bill. The innkeeper can hardly control himself, but the farmer is adamant: „Not for sale!“ He orders another beer and corn schnapps, and again the same: The pig vomits another 500 euro bill. Now the innkeeper gets greedy: „All right, I'll pay you 10,000 euro in cash right now!“ The farmer accepts contented and hands the pig over to the innkeeper. The next day he reads in the local press: „Drunk innkeeper kicks pig to death.“

Each row, column and square has to contain the numbers from 1 to 9. X-Sudoku must show these numbers also on the two diagonal lines. Solutions on page 13.

A blind comes to a restaurant. The waiter, who is also the owner, hands him a menu. “I'm sorry, sir, but I am blind and can't read the menu. Just bring me a dirty fork from a previous customer. I'll smell it and order from there.” A little confused, the owner picks up a greasy fork from the dirty dishes and hands it to the blind man who puts the fork to his nose. “Ah, yes, that's what I'll have - meatloaf and mashed potatoes.” Unbelievable, the owner thinks as he walks toward the kitchen. The cook is the owner's wife. He tells her what had just happened. Several days later, the blind man returns and the owner mistakenly brings him a menu again. “Sir, don't you remember me? I'm the blind man.” “I'm sorry, I didn't recognize you. I'll go get you a dirty fork.” The owner gets a dirty fork and the blind man takes deep breath and says, “That smells great. I'll take the macaroni and cheese with broccoli.” Walking away in disbelief, the owner thinks the blind man is fooling with him and tells his wife that the next time he will test him. The blind man returns the following week, but this time the owner sees him coming and runs to the kitchen. He tells his wife, “Sue, rub this fork on your panties before I take it to the blind man.” Sue complies and hands her husband the fork. As the blind man walks in and sits down, the owner is ready and waiting. “Good afternoon, sir, this time I remembered you and I already have the fork ready for you.” The blind man smiles and puts the fork to his nose, and says, “Hey, I didn't know that Sue worked here!”
