At a dinner for the 25th anniversary of the Foundation Institutionality and Justice (Finjus), President Danilo Medina said that he was not ready to accept that everything is generalized and all are put into a same sack when it comes to corruption scandals, which are concerning the various institutions of the country, in particular the justice system. If only a slightly ambitious agreement will be signed in Paris, the only ones who will benefit from it, will be a group of billionaires who got rich with fossil fuels.

The FAD'H will collaborate closely with the National Police PNH with its 14,000 members and take on tasks for the maintenance of internal peace, but it also will be used in the case of natural disasters and will help combat drug and human trafficking as well as piracy and terrorism. Everything will be done in accordance with national and international agreements.
Zika, a Risk for Pregnant Women Virus can cause Microcephaly / Zika already spread in some Countries of Latin America The Brazilian health ministry has confirmed a link between Zika, the mosquito-borne virus from Africa that has spread in many countries of Latin America and also to the Caribbean, and a high incidence of birth defects. According to officials, the Zika fever is behind a spike in cases of micro-encephalitis - an inflammation of the brain contracted in the first months of pregnancy, which can stunt the growth of the foetus’ head. Doctors had found Zika virus in the blood and tissue of a baby with micro-encephalitis in the north-eastern state of Ceara, the ministry said, and officials have issued warnings to women to think carefully about getting pregnant at the moment in areas where there are Zika fever cases. Zika was first detected in Brazil in April and has since spread to 18 states. It is a viral disease, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito (photo), which is also the insect vector for Dengue and Chikungunya. The symptoms are also very similar to these diseases and include fever, muscle and joint pain, headache, nausea, inflammation of the eye and eyeball pain, vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness and rash. There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika and symptoms last approximately four to seven days in the absence of complications. Until recently, no deaths due to Zika had ever been recorded. Up to now, 739 cases of the disease and three deaths had been recorded. This was the first time in the world that adult deaths from Zika virus had been registered.
Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) announced earlier this month that the Zika virus has been detected in a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nation. While CARPHA did not identify the country, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) indicated that five cases of the Zika virus had been confirmed in Suriname. The virus had previously been reported in Colombia and there have been suspected cases in the Dominican Republic. Since last July, there were at least 520 cases of babies born with microcephaly in Brazil, five times the usual number of the statistics for the entire year. A laboratory test in an infant with microcephaly and other congenital diseases had confirmed the Zika virus. Microcephaly is a neurodevelopmental disorder. It is usually defined as a head circumference more than two standard deviations below the mean for age and gender. Microcephaly may be congenital or it may develop in the first years of life. There is a wide variety of conditions that cause abnormal growth of the brain, or from syndromes associated with chromosomal abnormalities.

It is the second album of the 65-year-old Mexican singer Juan Gabriel, also called “El Divo de Juárez” (divo - male form of a Diva, due to his extravagant behavior), published this year. Juan Gabriel showed great interest to sing in duos. His partners are high-profile stars such as Marc Anthony, Laura Pausini, Alejandro Fernández or late Joan Sebastian who has died in July. But also the Colombian newcomer J. Balvin (LA PLAYA 142) sings in the old hit of Juan Gabriel, ”La Frontera” from the year 1980. Or Wisin, member of the former Reggaeton duo Wisin y Yandel accompanies the song “No tengo dinero” from the year 1972. After Juan Gabriel had to struggle with serious health problems, and there were rumors of the end of his career, this album hopefully proves the contrary.
On the National Day of Merengue, the National Bureau of folklore (Dinafolk), a department of the Ministry of Culture, honored two outstanding interpreters of Merengue típico for their contribution to this branch of Merengue: Juan Robles (El Viejo Puro) and José Cabrera (José el Calvo - photo), who is considered one of the best saxophonists in the country. On this occasion, their photos were hung in the National Gallery of Merengue. The “National Day of Merengue” is celebrated annually since 2005 on November 26, in honor of the first mention of the name “Merengue” in the newspaper “El Oasis” on the 26th of November 1854.

Maria's Skipper Does the mysterious butterfly of Sosúa still live here? / How to raise your own Butterflies Raising butterflies is entertaining and great fun. In case you are living in the Sosúa area you could even help scientists to rediscover one of the most enigmatic butterflies of Hispaniola: Maria's Skipper. How to raise butterflies in three steps: Step 1. Find eggs or caterpillars. Raising butterflies can be great fun. Take a stroll trough your garden or trough some woods and fields and observe butterflies. Butterflies show a variety of behaviours, and you might see them feeding on flowers or on fruit (rotting Mango seems to be especially attractive). You might observe them drinking at a puddle, or even see them flirting and dancing with each other trough the air. In case you see a butterfly flying in a zig-zag pattern low through the greenery, landing very often on leafs and stems, then you are probably observing a female that is looking for a the right place to lay some eggs. Observe her closely! Is she curving her abdomen to the plant in order to attach some eggs? Is she shortly probing only, or is she serious and stays some seconds? Check out that leaf when she is done! You might find a small yellowish or whitish egg. You can collect the branch or the leaf with the egg and raise your own butterfly! While out on your excursion you should also have an open eye for caterpillars. Maria's Skipper feeds on palm leafs. If you find a fan shaped palm leaf that has some rolled up tips, You might want to cut of a good portion of the leaf and take it home. Caterpillars found on Passionvines, Citrus trees or Milkweeds are especially worth raising. Some very colourfull butterflies feed on these plants as caterpillars. Step 2. Raise caterpillars. Use a plastic container with a tight lid. A big tupperware or something similar will do. Put a sheet of tissue on the bottom, for easy cleaning. This will be the new home for your egg or caterpillar and its food. Close the lid and place the container where it doesn't get any direct sunlight. Check your new pets every day or at least every other day and observe them eating and growing. In case the leafs start to wilt or rott, collect some fresh leafs. Many cater-
pillars are very picky when it comes to food. They will eat leafs of a single species of plants only. In case you are not shure what species of plant they are feeding on, it is best to collect leafs from the very same plant where you found them. Caterpillars shed their skin from time to time. They need to do this in order to grow. If you are raising several caterpillars, give
each one a separate container. This way you will know what kind of caterpillar belongs to which kind of butterfly. You caterpillar will eventually shed its last caterpillar skin and a pupae will hatch. The pupae will not need any food and will not move very much. Some pupae are quite well camouflaged, others have iridescent colours. The biggest miracle occurs however invisible within the pupae. Most of the organs of your caterpillar dissolve and the whole body is reorganized. Step 3. Release your butterfly. After about ten days (some species need much longer) a slight color change of the pupae will show that the butterfly is about to hatch! Take it outside to a shady place, open the container and unpack your camera. The newely emerged butterfly will need half an hour to an hour to enfold and harden its wings. This is the best moment to take excellent butterfly photos! After about an hour, your butterfly will fly off ... Maria's Skipper is certainly the strangest of all Hispaniolan butterflies. Don't get me wrong, it is a small reddish skipper like many others, and like all skippers the antenna have hooked tips and the caterpillars live in
rolled up leaves. That's not really unusual. The really unusual thing about Maria's Skipper is, that it has never been seen in the wild. And not a single photo of a living specimen has ever been published. How do we know it exits then? Let's tell the story step by step. There were 3 species of closely related small red skippers known from Hispaniola. They are called Haitian Skipper, Schwartz's Skipper and Mellisa's Skipper. You see a Haitian Skipper on the photo here. This is a common species on Hispaniola, that feeds on grass. The other two species occur in the high mountains of Hispaniola. Schwartz's Skipper can be found in the Cordillera Central, Mellisa's Skipper in the Sierra de Bahoruco. Their food plants are not well known, they might feed on grasses too. In the year 1989 a American scientist visited Sosúa and searched for butterflies and caterpillars. In a coastal wood 1.5 km east of Sosúa, he found some palms that had rolled up leave tips. These rolls were made by caterpillars of skippers. He raised one of these caterpillars and a small red butterfly hatched which nobody had ever seen before. While it looks similar to Schwartz's Skipper, it is different, as it occurs near sea level and feeds on palms. The scientist named this new species of butterfly Maria's skipper, I honour of his wife. The mystery doesn't end here... It seems that this small red skipper that feeds on palm leaves was never found again! So where could you find this elusive bug? Go to some woods or some shrub in and around Sosúa, where palms with fan shaped leaves are in the under-story. Watch out for leaves with rolled up tips. This is the place where this mysterious caterpillar might still live. How can you report the butterflies and caterpillars you found or raised? All you need is one or two photos and Internetaccess. Silvio Mora was born in Switzerland in 1979. His father got a job at the Swiss Embassy in Santo Domingo in 1988 and decided to stay here after the end of the job for health reasons (asthma). Silvio's mother opened a successful beauty parlor in the shopping street El Conde in the late eighties, where stars like Vickiana came to make their hair. When his father died in 1991, his mother asked Silvio, if he wanted to return to Switzerland, but he said no. After graduation, Silvio Mora chose the music and played in various orchestras, such as the Orchestra of the Merengue Bar in the Hotel Jaragua from 1998 until 2001, where his talent was noticed by the audience. He founded his own group, La Mezcla, the mixture, which he understood as a mix of different countries. But despite many appearances in TV shows, success failed to materialize until his first hit in 2007. His recipe for success are now funny Merengues, such as “El pollito Pío” or the presented song.
