Understanding Fears and Phobias Live a Fearless Life

What is it that scares you and can it be fixed?

Fear is a normal human reaction, and it is part of our survival instincts when we sense danger.When faced with danger, our sympathetic nervous system produces adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormones.

This change in internal chemistry prepares us to fight or to flee the physical threat.

You may have heard of "fight or flight." In this situation, you may experience an increase in heart rate and blood sugar as a way for the body to provide you with more energy.

Although it is normal and even helpful to experience fear in dangerous situations, with phobias the fear and danger are greatly exaggerated or imagined. The good thing is that these fears and phobias are able to overcome.

Types of Phobias Fears and phobias are extremely common, with approximately 8 to 18 percent of Americans suffering from some irrational fears. There are over 400 recognizable phobias. The most common are fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of driving, fear of tight spaces, fear of needles, and fear of germs.

What causes fears and phobias?

Fears and phobias can develop as a result of having a traumatic or negative experience related to a specific object or situation. It can also be related to genetics and the environment. You may find that you share the same phobias as your parents. .

How do my fears affect me?

Your subconscious mind, the control center of your deep rooted beliefs and behaviors, plays a great role in how we react to fearful stimuli. It makes up 95 percent of your daily thoughts and runs on autopilot 24/7, responding to the thoughts and perception of your conscious mind.

When you are faced with your fears and phobias, your subconscious mind is alerted and responds in the fight or flight response as a way to protect you. This is what it is trained to do and why you may feel triggered by certain situations.

Overtime, your brain collects more and more memories of similar fearful experiences and for most people those fears get worse instead of better, unless it is worked on. .

What can I do to move on?

There are different levels in the brain at which change can be processed, and to overcome a bad habit or fear, we must first figure out how deeply rooted the phobia is.

Sometimes all it takes is becoming aware of a particular pattern or identifying the root of the problem to see enough change.

How Hypnosis Works The thought alone of facing your fears might make you nervous. The great thing about hypnosis is that a relaxed, calm state is required in order for change to occur.

Through relaxation, we are able to access your mind at a subconscious level.

Other times, it takes a few tries and repetitions to dissolve the fear or phobia.

We may even find that the root of our fears and phobias isn't what we actually think.

For example, you may have a fear of driving that doesn't stem from an accident but a time when you were little and watched one of your parents get involved in serious road rage.

This incident where you felt unsafe may have caused you to feel unsafe driving in general, and with hypnosis, you can feel a sense of safety again.
