Thai passport trauma O verseas travel restrictions for Thai passport holders seem to be tightening. Whilst Singapore nationals can travel to 156 countries without a visa, Thais are restricted to about a quarter of that total. As regards travel to European countries and the United States, Thais are now evidently subject to increasingly stringent visa rules. Indeed, many Thais have commented how difficult it has become to obtain a visit (tourist) visa to the United Kingdom. Of course, British authorities deny there has been any recent change, but Thai applicants say that the documentation now required goes beyond the financial position of the sponsor and good reasons for returning to Thailand at the conclusion of the holiday. The “interview” is no longer as significant as the stack of paperwork required. Several embassy refusal letters shown to Pattaya Today by disappointed Thais illustrate that the awarding authorities are looking for substantial proof of employment in Thailand or independent income or ownership of land or property. It is apparently no longer good enough to have dependent children living in Thailand or being in receipt of regular, ongoing cash donations from the sponsor. However, even this position is better for

the applicant than American embassy practice which dismisses an application without any written explanation at all. Immigration specialists say that the difficulties for Thai passport holders are linked to the fact that many Thais want to be economic migrants and/or have overstay issues. Even so, applying for a visa in Thailand can be a traumatic experience. Visa fees tend to be high and non-refundable for the popular destinations, confusing questions on the application and demands for more and more documents about financial status. Refused applicants say one of their problems is that working on a family

farm, for instance, does not necessarily produce the sort of proof embassies are seeking. Tax returns and business registrations in Thailand can be much more informal than in Europe. The fact that many countries have now outsourced their visa application procedures is another complicating factor. It can be very difficult or impossible to contact the people making the actual decisions. These issues are leading some Thai government bureaucrats to talk of ‘visa reciprocity’, or making life more difficult for foreigners wanting visas to stay in Thailand. Continued on page 4

News VISA FORUM SESSION OVERSTAY PROBLEM Q:  I shall be leaving Thailand by air next week, but I have a two months’ overstay.  Will I be arrested or jailed or deported, or all three?  A:  You will need to pay the 20,000 baht maximum overstay fine, but usually you will be allowed to board your flight if the overstay is less than three months.  But the immigration officer still has enormous discretion.  If you have a good reason for your overstay, for example medical problems, take some documentation with you.   RETIREMENT ALTERNATIVE Q:  I have heard that there is a better alternative to the one year retirement visa which can offer you five or twenty years for a one-off payment of cash to the Thai  government.  Do you know about this? A:  You are referring to the elite card (20 years) or the baby elite card (5 years).  There is all the information you need on the website.  The baby elite card offers a five year permit to reside in Thailand for a one-off payment of 500,000 baht which is obviously non-refundable.  There is still some bureaucracy with the elite card options, but less than with the retirement option.  There is no minimum age for the elite card, so it can be useful for well-heeled aliens who are not yet 50 years old.   EMBASSY CLOSURE Q:  I have read that the British embassy in Bangkok will close as the land has been sold off.  So how will I get any embassy services in the future?  A:  It probably won’t make any difference because all passport applications and UK visas are already handled by Trendy House, a rented office space which is not based at the Wireless Road complex in any case.  Some embassy services are available only by post, for example the income letter for the immigration bureau.  But the British embassy will no doubt fill in all the details about services when (and if ) closure of Wireless Road is imminent.   BEFORE AND AFTER TAX Q:  One way of obtaining a retirement visa is to obtain a letter from the embassy confirming you have an overseas income of at least 800,000 baht in foreign currency.  Should this be a pre-tax gross sum or a post-tax amount?  A:   It has never been clarified, so don’t worry about it.  Some embassies require proof of your income, for example bank statements, which suggest after-tax.  Other embassies don’t require any evidence to give you the letter.  As things stand, the immigration bureau will accept the total figure in the letter without further inquiry.  Best to leave it that way, eh?   TM30/TM28 Q:  I am very confused about these two immigration forms which people tell me I must fill in or be fined.  What’s the difference?  A:  The TM28 is the change of address form which aliens should fill in and hand to immigration if they move from a long-term address.  It does not apply to tourists moving their hotel.  The TM30 is for the owners of condos, hotels and private apartments with a foreign guest or tenant.  The detail is complicated and varies from office to office.  The 100% answer is to check your situation at your local immigration bureau.   LAMINATE IT  Q:  I have heard that I should carry my passport with me at all times, but I am fearful of losing it.  What does the regulations actually say?  A:  Yes, technically, you should carry it as you say.  In practice, it is OK to carry around a photocopy or small lamination of the passport, provided the current visa is still valid.  An alternative, if relevant in your case, is to carry your Thai driving licence in your wallet so that it is always ready for inspection.  Apart from the law, it is common sense in any event to have a proper ID on your person.

Thai passport trauma

One immigration official told Pattaya Today that Thailand needs to pay a lot more attention to the dangers of undocumented aliens entering the country because of the risk of admitting terrorists or criminals. He also pointed out that president

Duterte of the Philippines had said recently that there is something wrong about an immigration system which freely allows US citizens to visit the Philippines whilst forcing nationals of his own country to pass through numerous hoops to get to

America, even for a short stay. Some visa specialists believe that the Brexit referendum result in UK and the problem of African and Asian refugees across the European continent have led to a stiffening of the decisionmaking process for both British and Schengen visas. Although this is impossible to prove as embassies invariably stonewall, there is no doubt

that more documentation is now being required, especially relating to the financial status of the applicant. Those Thais wholly dependent on the sponsor’s financial backing and lacking any kind of independent assets, such as ongoing employment or ownership of land or property in the mother country, seem to be most at risk of being refused a tourist visa.

Pattaya restaurateur dies suddenly Richard Burk, who managed Pattaya’s famous Amor restaurant for many years, has died in his condominium after suffering a heart attack. He was 70 and had suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure for many years. Born in Canada with a British father who was a journalist, Richard spent his entire working life in the hotel, restaurant and catering industries, mainly in Thailand..

He opened the Amor restaurant in 1993, situated in the heart of Boyztown, with a business partner who allegedly cheated him. Richard himself then took over the reins and was highly successful before falling on hard financial times in 2008 and 2009 and being forced to close. During the final few years of his life, Richard ran several restaurants for other owners before becoming, only last year, a junior school science teacher

on a voluntary basis. Barry Kenyon, former British embassy official who confirmed the death, said “Richard was a hardworking and sincere guy who always re m a i n e d c h e e r f u l e ve n when adversity struck him, which unfortunately it did on several occasions. The Amor days were the happiest of his life and many expats and visitors still remember his friendly supervision of a huge international menu.”

Our Community St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2017 The annual Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place on the afternoon of March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. This year, the seventh year since the parade started, was a quieter affair than usual as the participants paid respects to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and also to the current monarch, King Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun. It was also the first time that His Excellency Brendan Rogers, ambassador at the embassy of Ireland in Bangkok, attended the event, and he led the parade from start to finish. Ambassador Rogers was accompanied by his good wife, Kevin Doris Rogers. It was at the Alcazar Theater that everyone gathered, decorated floats, marching bands and paraders and prior to the start of the parade entertainment was provided. The ladies from Hooters gave a unique performance of Y.M.C.A., the students from the School for the Blind sang beautifully, as they always do, and the staff from Centara Grand Resort got everyone dancing. A trio of traditional Irish musicians flew in from the Emerald Isle especially to play on the day, and they brought back memories for many. Father Michael Picharn welcomed the ambassador, who gave a short speech before the flags of Thailand and Ireland were raised to the sounds of the two national anthems. The parade was led by the marching band from the Royal Thai Navy, followed by the ambassador and a group of students from the Vocational School for People with Disabilities who all carried portraits of the late and the current kings. The parade is growing each year and this year was

the biggest in its short history. Thousands took part and even more spectators lined both sides of Beach Road to watch the spectacle. The number of marching bands was reduced to just three this year, compared to eight in previous years but this lack of music did not stop anyone having fun. One of the loudest floats was from the School for the Blind. Give a group of blind teenager boys a trombone, four saxophones, cymbals and a set of drums and they will entertain you for as long as they can. The parade ended at School No. 8, on South Pattaya Road, and everyone gathered to listen to the list winners of the Best Decorated Floats, this year won, again, by Centara Grand Resort. Pattaya Floating Village and King Power also received well deserved trophies. Ambassador Rogers and Father Michael presented a special award to Steven Devereux for all his hard work and dedication over the past seven years; the Pattaya parade would not be what it is today without the enthusiasm of Devereux. As the sun was starting to dip, Ambassador Rogers thanked everyone for attending and he promised he would be back in 2018. While the Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade is always a lot of fun, there is also a serious side to the event. All money raised and donated will be donated to Pattaya’s largest charitable organization, the Father Ray Foundation, who currently care for and educate more than 850 children and students with disabilities. UNO MAS at Centara Grand at

Chef Joan Tanya Dot

CentralWorld Bangkok

Livin’ The High Life Hola! from the Food Lovers who have just returned from a short sojourn in Bangkok where Centara Grand at CentralWorld teleported us to one of the snazziest, swankiest tapas bars that could have been anywhere in contemporary Spain. Tapas have taken the world by storm and Bangkok is no exception. Here at UNO MAS authentic tapas are flying out of Chef Joan Tanya Dot’s Iberian kitchen and in particular the Josper charcoal oven. Hailing from Barcelona, Chef brings a wealth of gastronomy from his working experience in a myriad of top establishments including the famous Catalan Escola Hofmann, Michelin star restaurant school. Tapas restaurants are so “now” in Bangkok. But, it is worth mentioning how the trendiest prevailing food fad started. Tapa simply means a lid or cover and derives from the fact that in the past a glass of wine (or

by Mick & Di Barker

ale) was covered with a slice of bread or ham to avoid flies diving into the drinks. From this humble creation it has won the hearts and stomachs of bon vivants the world over. From the moment we stepped onto the Mediterranean blue glazed floor in reception we were sold. A Flamenco guitarist provides the atmospheric falceta excitement and at other times a DJ spins the Latin beat. Then there’s the 8-metre wine tower containing over 2,000 bottles. Remarkably, bottles are retrieved when a very acrobatic wine server, wearing a harness, and known as the “wine angel” is lowered into the tower to locate your preferred bottle. Then there’s the casual 60-seat Tapas & Raw Bar and the fashionable 78-seater open air dining deck, all of which adds up to a very chic, stylish culinary destination. Mick and I opted for the Weekday Lunch menu, which offers three

courses for B.999++ or 2 courses for B.799++ chosen from a weekly changing menu. Gambas al Pil Pil (sizzling prawns with garlic and chilli) was our first taste. A speciality dish from Spain’s Basque region, it truly fulfilled our expectations. This was followed by Argentinean Tenderloin Carpaccio. Rizzla-thin cuts of this most prized and expensive beef had been tenderly layered with shavings of Idiazabal cheese (another Basque speciality), apple puree and peppery leaves of rocket to create a succulent and meltingly delicious dish. Creamy wild porcini mushroom croquettes then hit the table accompanied by salmon canuto (salmon rolls wearing

Sublime Fizz – Lombard Champagne eve n ts c a le n d a r Dinner at Plaza Athénée Bangkok HOLIDAY INN PATTAYA “Champagne is one of the elegant extras in life.” – Charles Dickens What is it about French Champagne? Why so exclusive? Isn't it just a white or rosé (pink) wine by John K. Lindgren with bubbles? Not really. It's like automobiles; there are many sports cars – but only one Ferrari, one Porsche brand. Something to do with history, legacy and a bit of marketing, too. There are many sparkling wines but only one Champagne by origin, reputation and classification. And price, of course! El Cheapo French Champagne? No have! Recently Bangkok Champagne aficionados were treated to a memorable Lombard & Cie sixcourse Champagne Dinner at The Reflexions restaurant, Plaza Athénée Bangkok, A Royal Méridien Hotel. Modern French cuisine in a stylish setting with a five-star menu created by Chef de Cuisine Roxanne Lange. The exclusive importer and distributor of Lombard, G Four Fine Wines and Spirits, Davide Contu Salis, introduces Paul-Henri Perrot, brand ambassador of Maison Lombard & Cie, all the way from France. Chef Roxanne's kitchen brigade opens the soiree. Amuse-bouche: Smoked oyster – potato ice cream – caviar. Followed by crispy chicken skin, hamachi, lime and chicken mousse. Gastronomic fireworks! In the Champagne flutes Lombard & Cie Brut Reference. Small persistent bubbles. Good acidity with pleasant yeasty characteristics and toasty overtones. The blend is made of the three classic Champagne grapes: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. First starter: Hokkaido Scallop, a culinary assemblage of citrus, fennel, red chili and pork belly. The fennel adds a unique licorice-like flavor to this delectable dish. Scallop and Champagne always the absolutely perfect match. Here with Lombard & Cie Brut Grand Cru Millesime 2008. Exceptional vintage. Bright golden color with very fine bubbles. Nuances of almond, nuts, cinnamon and cocoa. Second starter: Boston Lobster, the culinary pride of New England accompanied by beetroot, goat's cheese, apple and shallots. Goat's cheese and lobster? Yes, washed down with Lombard & Cie Brut Premier Cru Rosé. Boasting beautiful pale, salmon pink color. On the palate the freshness of Chardonnay and fine cherry flavors provided by the Pinot Noir. Ample and generous finish. Rosé Champagnes account for between 3 to 5 percent of Champagne's yearly production. Before the main course, in

between Chef Roxanne Lange surprises us with Duck Liver Scorched, the perfect cleanse palate. A chive, almond and apricot ice cream. Champagne Tanagra Brut Grand Cru (grand cru: a wine of the highest rank or reputation). The elegance of this comes from its three-part balance of minerality, fruit and finesse. Superbly constructed, this great Champagne is tailor-made for haute cuisine like Chef Lange's duck liver, apricot ice cream culinary creation.

The main course. Drum roll! Quail, black currant, roasted grains, Jerusalem artichoke and quail sauce. Not a mountain of meat but a light, lean serving with delicate game flavor. In the sparkling glasses the cream of the crop: Lombard & Cie Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs 2004. Exceptional Lombard bubbly made from the best vineyards of only white Chardonnay grapes, hence the name: Blanc de Blancs. Grand Cru Champagne effervescence with remarkable precision and complexity. The dessert: Pomelo – chili meringue – caramelized peanuts – brown sugar ice cream. Exquisite presentation and finger-licking good with another sip of that sublime fizz. Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs. All the way from the northernmost wine producing region in France called Champagne. A Lombard & Cie Champagne dinner to be cherished. overcoats of crunchy sesame seeds) and served with a lively wasabi aioli. Diversely different taste sensations so far and more was yet to come… A Spanish centric wine list features over 2,000 bottles and pleasingly includes over 30 by the glass in 9 cl and 15 cl pours with prices from B.170++ to B.820++. We enjoyed a glass (or two) of a ruby red La Vendimia Rioja 2013 which we just loved with its silky tannins and an elegant crisp white to start, namely an Albarino from Martin Codax costing B.1,600++ and B.1,400++ per bottle respectively. Joselito is considered the best cured ham in the world and here Chef offers five opportunities to discover for yourself just why this is the case. For first-timers try the 120gram mixed selection at B.1,290++. Chef’s signature dishes include the celebrated “Cochinillo” Asado. A half roasted suckling pig Segovian style served with green Mojo sauce, house gravy and a fusion nam jim jaew. The Josper oven (or more correctly grill) is the hottest indoor barbeque available and a much-prized piece of equipment by Chefs worldwide. At UNO MAS it produces exciting dishes such as the famous Basque large ribeye steak weighing in at 1 kg or the 600 grams of Spanish suckling goat leg or the grilled boneless shoulder from the legendary black-footed Iberico pigs. There are so many “notto-be missed” dishes on this menu it fairly sparkles with authentic, premium items.

Spanish Cochinillo Asado

Cecina de Leon Carpaccio

Our lunch continued with an angel hair pasta (Catalan Fideua) cooked like paella. Soft, tender squid joined huge prawns, chillis and chopped green and red pepper. Chef then presented us with a rabbit confit. Rabbit confit is just like duck confit cooking the meat slowly in olive oil loaded with herbs and spices. It was a superb rendition and afforded even more luscious with a tranche of foie gras cooked quickly in a pan to a glazed medium rare with just the right amount of pinkness.

Joselito Ham Croquettes

Yes, this menu is a privileged collection of the world’s gourmet food items with prices that reflect their provenance, but also the cold and hot tapas items showcase a wealth of Spanish recipes to enjoy here in Bangkok with exceedingly reasonable prices, i.e. the Iberian artisan cheeses at only B.190++ and the opportunity to savour Joselito ham croquettes at only B.190++. Beverage of Centara Grand at CentralWorld, David Nowak, told us that CRU is the only bar in Thailand to serve GH Mumm’s No. 1 Pink, the limited edition Rose crafted by Didier Mariotti Maison Mumm’s cellar master. La Vie en Rose was our initial Champagne cocktail tipple. Pointed bubbly glasses of Mumm’s finest pink were held in a vice of ice cubes accompanied by raspberry and pure juice of strawberry plus a phial of Absolut Vodka for bespoke cocktails. Not too much sweetness for me, just the pure, virgin originality of the fruit and flora finish to savour this most exquisite Champagne. The Rose blend is dominated by Pinot Noir and is rounded off by the fruitiness of Meunier to reveal the full subtlety and elegance of Chardonnay. Mick enjoyed several drops of Absolut and just a tear of the strawberry to declare it sensational. Paired with a portion of lobster, crab and corn fritters with delicious aioli for dunking, the marriage was hi-so indeed. If you

really want to push the gin palace out – a bottle of Mumm’s limited edition Rose will set you back B.4,800 but what an evening to remember that would be. Expect to pay B.999 by the glass. Bollinger and Taittinger vintages are also readily available for celebrating in style. Premium Russian caviar sells itself in the rarified air here, never are such friends made more quickly and more firmly than Champagne and caviar. Foie gras and chicken yakitori skewers are bestsellers at B.388, while the cheese platter with figs, grapes and walnuts is a delight highlighting only the very best imported cheeses. Or why not order the assorted Joselito cured meats with cheese to share around the table for only B.740? Oysters naturally are a marriage made in bubbly heaven while the Peking duck steamed buns have their fans pairing chef’s penchant for Southeast Asian twists and the innovative CRU cocktails. Champagne is such an amiable companion it lends itself to sweet or savoury, don’t climb down from your CRU perch without tasting the rich chocolate mousse with chocolate soil and mint. Top up your flute and float away on an excess of the luxe life. CRU opens at 5 pm (till 1 am) so a long, evening with the joy of a scarlet sunset to initiate the proceedings and great music and Champagne to follow. Thermage for younger-looking eyes The skin around our eyes is the most sensitive part of our face and the most noticeable as we age. Reduced collagen tends to make the skin lose its elasticity; it begins to sag, and wrinkles form—making us look older. Overexposure to sunlight also contributes to the rapid aging of our skin, which is known as photoaging. by Dr Natnicha Loichuen During the month of April, when Thais celebrate Songkran, many of us will be exposed to extreme heat and sunlight, which can damage collagen fibers—a protein fiber found in abundance throughout our bodies. It provides strength and cushioning to many different body parts, including skin. Overexposure to sunlight also can damage elastin, the protein that helps skin tissue resume its original position or shape after stretching. If you want to rejuvenate the skin around your eyes without undergoing invasive treatment, then Thermage is the ideal treatment for you. Thermage for eyes is a FDA-approved procedure for tightening and lifting skin; it reduces wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet). The treatment is safe and non-surgical, using radio

frequency energy to create a uniform heating effect deep into the dermis. The heat tightens and rejuvenates existing collagen. At the same time, it stimulates the production of new collagen to tighten and lift the skin around the eyes, giving you a more youthful appearance. Thermage produces immediate results after the procedure, but the ultimate improvement may take up to six months and usually lasts 12 to 24 months. A Thermage for eyes treatment takes about 45 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the affected area. You can apply make-up and return to your routine activities right after treatment.

Jiu-jitsu, or Brazilian jiu-jitsu as it is commonly named outside Brazil, is a grappling orientated martial art/combat sport that evolved from its Japanese roots in 1920s Brazil, and continued to evolve for many decades until its present format. This style though previously established in its native country became highly popular within the northern hemisphere after a series of performances from BJJ fighter Royce Gracie in the early UFC’s (Ultimate Fighting Championship) where he battled against competitors from many different martial arts backgrounds in the no-holds-barred tournament, becoming the fighting promotion’s first champion. This event proved jiu-jitsu’s efficiency and helped raise awareness all around the world becoming one of the reasons behind the sport’s growth. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably taking the fight to the ground. Then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Sparring, commonly referred to as rolling, and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not solely a martial art but also a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people and ultimately a way of life. Sport BJJ focus on submissions without the use of strikes while training allows practitioners to practice at full speed and with full power resembling the effort used in a real competition. Training methods include technique drills in which techniques are practiced against a non-resisting partner; isolation sparring, commonly referred to as positional drilling, where only a certain technique or sets of techniques are used, and full sparring in which each opponent tries to submit their opponent using any legal technique. Physical conditioning is also an important part of training. URBAN HEALTHY CO., LTD. 64/2 Moo 1 Nongprue Soi 1, Nongprue Banglamung, Chonburi Tel: 038 248 079 | www.313trainingstudio.com

fairness-fitness-finery Feel like you’re losing it?

Vol. 05 No. 07 | Apr 1-15, 2017

Maybe you are and you don’t know it Of course, we’re talking about your hair. Are you finding more and more locks in your comb or hairbrush lately? How about on your pillow? Or around the shower drain? Why is this happening? It’s probably one of five reasons, the most common of which is hereditary hair loss. For men, hereditary hair loss usually means a receding hairline, whereas women (yes, hereditary thinning or baldness also affects the fairer sex) start thinning on the front center part of their heads. While many men in Pattaya immediately resort to shaving their heads in defeat, that is not necessary; there are treatments that can help. Propecia (for men only) can stop hair from falling out if caught early. Products with minoxidil may promote hair growth for men and women. Check with your physician or dermatologist. Secondly, stress. Family difficulties, financial worries or any number of factors may make you feel like pulling your hair out. In fact, such stresses can mess with your tresses. Major stresses—either physical or emotional—can cause hair roots to go into a resting state prematurely and then shed. For women,

hormones can play a role. After childbirth, falling estrogen levels may cause hair to thin, but it will grow back over time. A third cause of hair loss may be your diet. Iron deficiency often is the reason—especially in women. So add more iron-rich foods to your diet: meat, beans, tofu and fortified grains (found in breakfast cereals and some bread). And make sure you’re getting enough protein; low levels can cause your body to store what protein it has, stopping hair growth. Or the culprit may be medical in nature, such as thyroid disease or one of more than 30 other

conditions that cause hair loss. Once you have a diagnosis and begin treatment, hair growth can be restored. Certain cancer treatments such as chemotherapy are another well-known cause of hair loss but, again, hair regrows when treatment ends. Some medications may also result in thinning hair. These include blood thinners; meds for depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis and gout, and starting or stopping birth control pills. Finally, beware poor hair-care practices. That may be the case if your hair is over processed with dyes, relaxers and straighteners. Or if you subject your mane to constant heat from a blow dryer or flat iron that leaves hair dry, brittle and prone to break. A flat iron on hair that is even a little wet can fry your hair. Not to be overlooked in the realm of poor practices is wearing a tight ponytail day after day. It puts too much physical traction on the hair follicles and you can lose your hair. This also applies to cornrows and braids as well.

Making Real Estate More Attractive to Foreigners The Thai government’s sporadic ‘I love you, I love you not’ mind-set toward foreigners appears to be swinging in favor of farangs once again. With the demise of real estate on the heels of a long and successful property boom throughout the Kingdom, regulators are returning to the drawing board to figure out what can and should be done to support the property market and encourage foreign investment. It is quite obvious that foreign investment in the property sector is high on the government’s priority list, while investors are resistant, given property laws and regulations that make it more difficult and far less attractive to buy real estate in the Magic Kingdom. So the idea that the government might be looking for ways to make property ownership safer and easier with new incentives is music to the ears of foreigners who own property or want to invest here but are deterred by prejudicial laws and regulations. One of the most discouraging regulations is the restriction on foreigners

by Clayton Wade Managing Director

from purchasing and selling long-term property leases. So it was a welcomed surprise to read in the Bangkok Post last week (March 25) an article entitled ‘50-year foreign lease mulled’. The article noted that Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong was studying the ramifications of a proposal that would allow foreigners to buy and sell property through 50-year leasehold contracts, thereby encouraging foreign investment in real estate. At a seminar late last month, Apisak acknowledged that “The Finance Ministry is looking at this idea, which is highly possible.” What a difference a couple of years can make in Thai real estate; it was not that long ago (February 2015) that a Phuket court ruled that 'secured' or 'collective' leases were void in Phuket. The ruling came unexpectedly and was a shock to almost everyone. Seen by many of us as wild and reckless, this decision by the Phuket Civil Court and subsequently upheld by

Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com

the Region 8 Appellate Court declared all ‘so-called secured leases’ previously offered by real estate developers to be invalid in Phuket province. Can you imagine this decision-coming out of nowhere and without warning--invalidating previously-signed agreements, inclusive of cast-iron 90year leases? Yes, what a difference we are seeing as we have gone from boom to bust. We now are witnessing the finance minister pursuing schemes to encourage a recovery in real estate. So moving forward, just how might a new 50-year lease law affect property values and sales if it were legal for foreigners? Well there is one thing I am sure we can all agree on and that is the Phuket renegade law machine needs addressing and it needs it fast as that one single ruling did more harm to the Thai real estate industry than anything else in years. At that time, in response to the Phuket Long-Term Lease debacle, Jerrald Kippen of Duensing Kippen, attorneys and arbitrators, offered some hope when he said, “Secured leases can be restructured to provide actual long-term lease security legally and without any downside to the developer by securing the pre-paid renewal terms with a mortgage over the land involved”. Kippen went on to say, “It is a simple and straightforward legal structure that provides security for the investor. A current ‘secured’ lease can be restructured into this better and genuinely secure alternative, before it is too late”. Again this was great to learn but, to be honest, many investors and business people are getting more and more fed up with the grey laws and the grey regulations and the grey this and grey that. This is 2017 and it is time for Thailand to start facing reality,

Having done business successfully in the Eastern Seaboard/Pattaya area for over 20 years, Clayton Wade is known throughout the Asia-Pacific region for his public speaking and television presentations as well as

and that reality is that the national real estate sector is suffering while neighboring nations are experiencing dynamic markets. Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia and the Philippines are leaving Thailand in the dust--in the dark ages of proper and sound real estate laws and regulations. Those countries are all taking big steps towards making it safer and more secure for foreigners to purchase, lease and invest in properties. It is inspiring that Thailand’s finance minister thinks that more secure and longer term leases will invigorate the economy. “If we can do it,” he stressed, “the property industry will boom again because demand will come from all over the world”. Better and more secure real estate laws and regulations would be a ‘win win’ for Thailand and for foreigners eager to purchase and invest in properties here. The military government currently is funding more and more infrastructure projects across the country in a bid to impel growth; it’s obvious that the next real-estate cycle will be even more vigorous and successful than the last. With the passion of change in the air, perhaps we can inspire our finance minister to consider drafting some proposed changes in laws and regulations concerning the 49 percent limitation on foreign ownership in condominium developments—maybe liberalizing it up to 70 percent or even removing the restriction altogether. Let’s get this Thai real estate market rejuvenated and start doing great business once again. We boomed! We crashed! We’re in shock! It’s time to pull out of it and move on. Must be of legal age in accordance with the Thai law and the law under which he has nationality; 2. Must have good behavior; 3. Must have a regular occupation; 4. such foster home, under their responsibility, for not less than 10 years. second consecutive year and we have 10 finalists this year. The Mazda CX-3 has proven itself as a vehicle with outstanding quality that excels in terms of performance, environment, safety, versatility and most of all high value-for-money.” The CX-3 was first introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2014 and is the fifth model featuring Skyactiv technology. KKday Launches E-commerce Travel Platform in Thailand

KKday, a leading E-commerce travel platform in Asia offering localized travel across the globe has officially launched in Thailand, bringing unique and authentic tour experiences abroad to Thai tourists looking to travel independently and explore other cities around the world through organized excursions. Established in 2014, KKday is a Taiwan-headquartered company offering over 6,000 experiences, in 25 different categories, in 174 cities and 54 countries worldwide. After recently launching in Singapore, the Thai branch of KKday will appeal to the growing number of FITs (Free Independent Travelers) in Thailand in search of fun activities and memorable sightseeing trips on holiday. Whilst FITs book their own flight and accommodation, they look to online travel experts with local knowledge to book unforgettable travel experiences that give them genuine insights into a destination; discovering local

culture and heritage, hidden gems and off-the-beaten-track adventures and sampling incredible food and activities along the way. Ming Chen, CEO of KKday, who was at the launch in Bangkok, believes city break tours will appeal to the Thai market. “Thais are renowned for their warm welcome to tourists visiting their country and this openness extends to a genuine interest in other cultures and a love of travel. Asia is home to some spectacular cities and I envisage that KKday members in Thailand will want to soak up the atmosphere and truly experience city breaks in Taiwan, Korea and Japan which are all popular vacation destinations for Thais; exciting cities like Taipei, Seoul and Tokyo. I am pleased to be launching KKday in Thailand and with the huge growth of E-commerce within the country, an online travel experience platform fits perfectly with what the market wants and how consumers behave

here.” Hassle-free and competitively priced, KKday is easy to browse, read reviews and book online; the ideal travel companion for the digital Y Generation of under 35s who are primarily booking with KKday. In 2017, the travel trend for Gen Y tourists is all about experiential vacations and immersive getaways rather than finding some far-flung undiscovered destination or simply ‘being’ a tourist abroad. The launch of KKday in Thailand is aimed at expanding the platform which already has a presence in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea and Singapore. A branch in Thailand will build on KKday’s already 7 million plus page views per month, Facebook fan base of over 600,000 and membership that exceeds 300,000. Promotions are also on the horizon with relationships being established with some big-name brands in Thailand too. Expansion is part of the future strategy of KKday with two rounds of funding in 2015 and 2016 totaling $11.5 million led by Singaporebased venture capitalists, Monk’s Hill Ventures and AppWorks, the largest start-up accelerator in Asia. In Thailand, KKday has partnered with DTAC Rewards, Eatigo, Tourkrub, Show DC (Lotte) and Nokscoot. Celebrating its debut in Thailand with an exciting campaign, #KKvacay rewards one lucky winner and a friend will win a holiday in either Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore or Taiwan!

Chevrolet is taking blue to another level as well with the new Blue Me Away body color. The trendy metallic color and Storm package are a perfect combination for the Colorado, which is also available in pull me over red, black meet kettle metallic, summit white, satin steel grey metallic and auburn brown metallic. Honda unveils features of i-DTEC diesel turbo Engine Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd., unveiled appealing features of its advanced intelligent powertrain i-DTEC diesel turbo engine for the first time in Thailand integrated with 9-speed automatic transmission in the ‘All-new, fifthgeneration Honda CR-V’ with a sport premium design that was launched in Thailand on March 24. The 1.6L i-DTEC 4-cylinder diesel turbo engine was developed under Honda’s Earth Dreams technology. The maximum power of 160 hp at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 350 Newtonmeters at 2,000 rpm is equivalent to a large-size diesel engine with exceptionally high fuel efficiency of 18.9 km/l. Working together with 9-speed automatic transmission provides superior acceleration and fuel efficiency with CO2 emission rate at only 141 g/km. The Allnew Honda CR-V will be available with two alternative engines, diesel and benzene. To perfectly meet all lifestyles, all variants come with seven seat passenger capacity and equipped with a full range of advanced safety features and advanced function technologies. This results in the Allnew Honda CR-V being a more premium SUV compared to its previous generations. The 1.6L i-DTEC diesel turbo engine features a more powerful turbocharged diesel engine which includes Powerful driving performance, fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness. torque at a low 2,000 rpm. The Euro 4-compliant engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with a choice of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Safety remains a priority for Chevrolet, and the Colorado High Country STORM reflects this with a host of safety features that include front air bags for the driver and passenger along with a knee air bag for the driver, the Traction Control System (TCS), Panic Brake Assist (PBA), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-Rolling Protection (ARP), Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Other features include Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Front and Rear Parking Assist, and the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. The Colorado High Country Storm is also equipped with a wide array of convenience features, including front-park assist and a reverse camera that aid maneuvering in tight urban confines, auto rain sensors, automatic headlamp on/ off and a first-in-class remote-start function. In addition, it comes with advanced technologies such as the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, the Apple CarPlay application, Siri Eyes Free and front windows that automatically drop a fraction to facilitate door closing.

i-DTEC diesel turbo engine with 9-speed automatic transmission developed under Earth Dreams Technology in the All-new Honda CR-V is designed to offer number of real-world benefits to consumers. With a wider spread of gears, the very low first gear ratio ensures a quick and powerful launch, while a high top-gear ratio results in reduced engine speed and reduces fuel consumption and noise level at cruising speeds. Depending on the driving situation – engine speed and throttle application – the new nine-speed automatic transmission can even shift directly down gears from 9th to 5th gear and 7th to 4th gear, additionally to all two gears and one gear downshifts. All other multiple down shifts are overlapped shifts where an additional shift needs to be performed in background in order to achieve the target gear.

The 5th generation of CR-V is offered with the updated Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™. Software and hardware upgrades result in an increase in engine torque (up to a total of 40 percent) that can be sent to the rear wheels, based on the driving conditions. The result is improved performance in low traction conditions when AWD comes into play. The compact and efficient Real Time AWD provides a high degree of four-wheel-drive sophistication in rain, dirt roads and dry pavement. Real Time AWD offers the optimal balance of confident capability and user friendliness in a lightweight and fuel-efficient design. The driver can simply step on the accelerator and let the system maximize use of available grip and climbing capability. The system operation is completely automatic and virtually transparent in smoothness.

Youth Focus Rights and responsibilities in the classroom by Anthony Lawrence Kelly

There are many tiring aspects of classroom teaching, aside from the daily grind of meetings and assessments, we have the small matter of successfully managing groups of typically between 15 and 30 children, whilst still striving to achieve what some like to call ‘learning objectives’. From experience, I’ve learned that preventative measures are preferable to symptom management. With this in mind, I would like to briefly discuss some simple ideas and techniques to help us

avert chaos in our classrooms. However, first I would like to take a trip back in time, many moons ago. Once upon a time there was a young boy and a rather robust, may I say in the kindest way, battle axe of a primary school teacher named aptly Mrs Marshall, a wonderful ‘no nonsense’ lady was she, with ample bosom and half lens glasses assisting her stern glare. The boy was a real pain, you know the type, pulling girls’ pony tails, hiding pupils’ pencils when they went to the toilet and stealthily placing drawing pins on other children’s seats seconds before

they were about to sit down. One would be right in thinking this child was a mischievous rapscallion who was the kind of child that, along with a couple of scamp like partners in crime, immediately doubled, nay tripled the time Mrs Marshall had to spend dealing with nonsense, this would be true. Mrs Marshall was, however, a wise old dear and she had learned that, over her many years of teaching, sanctions alone were insufficient to remodel the behaviour of the most bothersome rascals. Often, it is true that ‘badly behaved’ pupils feel disconnected from their classroom environment. Mrs Marshall was all too aware of this so she gave these children some classroom jobs, most memorably the responsibility of reading and noting down the daily temperature as a reward for good work, soon every child wanted to be the ‘temperature monitor’. Behaviourist theories of learning have long held that positive reinforcement trumps punishment when it comes to moulding behaviours. With this in mind, here are some classroom strategies to keep children busy and / or motivated. (1) Rewards (certificates / badges reflecting effort and / or achievement in school; team points; can play educational games online for one period while others work in their books; taking the register in the

morning; sit with a friend). (2) R e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s (classroom equipment monitor; line leader; date monitor; deciding who may go for break first based on desk tidiness and classroom conduct for that morning). (3) Choices (selecting the end of term movie; first choice of games / toys during golden time). Finally, for those students who have strict parents, the ‘phone call home’ can be one of the most terrifying moments of one’s school days, however, this need not be so. The phone call home is typically assumed to be a negatively motivated action, but this premise need not be true. Parents love nothing more than to have their progeny praised and singled out for excellence and achievement, so to phone home (or in 21st century methodology, send an email) and tell a parent about how splendid their child has been this week can do wonders for guiding a child towards improved school conduct or productivity. Have a safe and productive year! Anthony Lawrence Kelly, teacher at Mooltripakdee International School, Pattaya.

GIS celebrates International Day by Mark Beales Garden International School (GIS) celebrated International Day with flags from dozens of countries, performances from around the globe and a range of food. International Day last month featured a samba band flag parade, highlighting the 40 nations that make up the GIS community, making it a truly international school. Parents and students then watched some stunning performances from Spain, China, India and other nations as students sang and danced their way through a special show. Throughout the performances, the national anthem of each country was played and people from that country went on stage. After the show, the Friends of Garden group, staff and other parents supplied an eclectic range of food that included Polish snacks, English scones and samosas. In the week before, there were several quizzes and events, including an ecochallenge and a costumes’ parade. GIS is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya.

Russian day celebrated at GIS by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona Russia's Maslenitsa Festival was celebrated at Garden International School . Some of the school's Russian students came up with the idea of celebrating the festival, which marks the end of

winter and the start of spring. Russian pancakes were sold during break and lunch, raising 800 baht for the Baan Kruu Boonchoo special school in Sattahip. There was also an assembly where students learned about the history of Maslenitsa, then took part

in a Russian tongue-twister challenge and a push-up competition. Well done to the students who arranged the school's very first 'Russian Day'. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

This & That Popular Conspiracy Theories Not much is uncontested about the death of President John F. Kennedy. He was struck down on Nov. 22, 1963 by two bullets – one in the head and one in the neck – while riding in an open car in Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with killing him and a presidential commission, headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren, found that the

killer had acted alone. But few people believe that, according to numerous public opinion polls. An ABC poll actually found that 70% of Americans believe Kennedy’s death was the result of a broader conspiracy or plot. Some say the trajectory of the bullets doesn’t square with Oswald’s known position on the sixth floor of a schoolbook

Conspiracies without number

depository. Others suggest a second gunman on the nearby grassy verge. Or maybe the president was killed by CIA agents angry about the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, or even at the behest of vice-President Lyndon Johnson. Other candidates for the crime include the KGB, mobsters and even aliens from outer space. The most enduring theory relates to that second gunman on the grassy knoll of Dealey Plaza. In 1964 the Warren Commission concluded there were only three shots – all from behind the president, all from that book depository and all from the bolt-action rifle of Lee Harvey Oswald. But in 1979 an investigation conducted by Congress disagreed and claimed that a fourth shot, which missed, had been fired from behind a white picket fence on that grassy knoll.

Yet in 1981 a special panel of the National Academy of Sciences insisted the fourth shot was random background noise, probably static. More recently, the consensus has swung back to the belief that a gunman was indeed lurking on that grassy knoll. The source of the disagreements arises from the fact that audiovisual technology was rather under-ripe in those days. The famous “Zapruder film” – which shows Kennedy’s head being blown apart – was “unmiked” (without a microphone) and the primary sound recording available comes from Dallas police transmission channels as a motorbike patrolman had inadvertently left his microphone on. But it’s easy to argue with this evidence and to confuse audible events with actual gunfire. Conspiracy theorists

and authors continue to this day to argue the ins and outs. Writer D.B. Thomas has determined that the gunshot-like sound from the grassy knoll occurs at exactly the same moment that the president was assassinated. He tabulates a 96 percent likelihood that a second gunman took a potshot at Kennedy and actually hit him. However we still don’t know who the second gunman was, nor whom he was working for. The magic of the Kennedy assassination literature is that we never

shall. The problem is that there’s still mega-cash to be made from the Kennedy fracas. Last year, the cardboard toe-tag in the morgue where Lee Harvey Oswald was brought after his own murder by Jack Ruby sold for 320,000 US dollars. Even authentic Titanic relics can’t match that sort of expenditure. A genuine receipt from the purser’s office on the doomed liner recently brought a paltry 35,000 dollars at public auction. Chicken feed eh?

How To Talk So He’ll Really Listen: Follow These 5 Expert Tips To Communicate Better With Your Spouse Today! Nearly all women in the world have had that maddening feeling at some point, that when they’re talking they’re not really being listened to by the man in their life. Most often it is not that the man in your life does not care about you, honestly it isn’t. Simply it’s that most men’s brains deal with information in a different way to a woman’s, and often this means your words simply get lost in translation. However there’s no need to get stressed, as by following our top five expert tips you can communicate with your man in ways that will make sure he always pays full attention to you in future. 1. Talk Loudly Enough It’s a clinical fact that men simply do not hear as clearly as women do. This is partly the reason men like loud music, and big surround sound systems etc., whilst us women leave the room with aching ears. When it comes down to it, men simply do not hear things as well as women do, so make sure that you speak up if you want your man to hear what you say. 2. Watch The Tone Of Your Voice Nobody likes to feel they are being reprimanded or told off for no reason at all, so when you need to make an important point then you should keep your voice calm and even, whilst you try and get your point across to your man. If your man feels like you are attacking him or starting to blame him for something, he is likely to get defensive and you may find out that what started out as a conversation ends up as an argument. So our point is that if you need him to listen to you then you need to be firm, but keep conversation friendly. 3. Choose The Right Time To Speak Sometimes we think we need to speak as soon as we have a thought or an idea. However, just remember that your partner may be right in the middle of something else just when you want to speak to him, it could be he’s watching a game that’s important to him, making dinner, or simply a bit sleepy, or working on some DIY project, or he might simply not be in the right frame of mind to talk to right now. Use your feminine intuition to tell you whether it is the right time or not to talk to him. As well as this, if you begin to talk to him and you observe that he’s just not listening, ask him, “Is there a better time to talk?” However, don’t ever be sarcastic or stonewall him. 4. Talk Side By Side When you need to broach a sticky subject that could potentially be a sticky issue to talk about, then try to avoid conversation face to face. This is because by looking him in the eye he can feel threatened by you, and most men when confronted, instinctively switch into survival mode, and this can trigger a fight or flight reaction to your conversation. So to make him feel him at ease, make a point of talking to him whilst you’re alongside him, such as walking side by side, or in the car driving, or just having dinner with him on the sofa. 5. Get Straight To The Point A recent study published in the “NeuroImage” journal has shown that a man’s brain interprets other men’s voices as speech yet interprets a woman’s voice as being like music. This explains why your man is able to easily focus when his friends are talking about some mindless ball game, yet he has to work really hard to concentrate on you when you’re telling him how bad your day’s been. So to make sure that he hangs onto your every word, you need to make sure you get your point across to him as quickly as possible. Do this by grabbing his attention and use direct statements like “Here is why I am so upset” or “The bottom line is that it comes down to this.” For additional information on romance, health, fitness, beauty, skin care, hair care and more, go to www.urbanewomen.com.

10 best exotic hostels Who says you have to stay in a fancy-pants resort to experience tropical luxury? We have exotic hostels in some of the most staggeringly beautiful locations on the planet from tree houses in rainforests, infinity pools on mountains and beach huts on Caribbean shores. Whether you’re after a private room or a social dorm, here are some examples of how you can travel in paradise on a backpacker’s budget… 1. Mad Monkey Backpackers Resort (Koh Rong Samloem, Cambodia)

This hostel is tucked away in private beach on the tranquil island of Koh Rong Samloem and is only accessible by tail boat. Most of the island is unexplored, which means Mad Monkey is the ultimate base for outdoor adventure. The hostel’s schedule is jam-packed with activities and parties kicking off every night at the huge bar, so it’s super easy to meet other islanders. You can stay in a spacious dorm with separate showers or upgrade to a beachfront en-suite bungalow. Just heaven! 2. Casa Elemento (Minca, Colombia) Do you long for that fresh mountain air on your face? To wake up to the soft sound of toucans and monkeys? Then this hostel nestled in the Colombian Sierra Nevada Mountains is for you. Besides the 9.6 location rating from our customers, you can’t beat the family-type atmosphere here. There’s a campfire every night, a BBQ every Sunday *with smoked meats* and everything is locally sourced – even the beds are handmade from jungle pine! We don’t have favourites, but we doubt things get any more blissful than watching the sunset in a giant hammock or eating breakfast in a tree house looking out to sea. 3. Far Out Beach Club (Ios, Greece) The Greek Islands are known for their wild nightlife, and this hostel is a fun-packed party zone anchored on Mylopotas Beach with the idyllic backdrop of the Aegean Sea. There’s accommodation for all budgets including dorms, privates, and cabins from £6 per night, plus the Far Out Camping site next door if you are on a cheaper budget. Aside from the pool parties and live music, there are facilities coming out of your eyeballs here, such as tennis and volleyball courts, a diving centre, sushi restaurant, and an outdoor cinema for chilling under the starry night sky. It certainly ticks all of our boxes!

5. Hangover Hostels (Mirissa, Sri Lanka) Can you get any more tropical than coconut groves, the Indian Ocean and rolling alabaster beaches? We think not! 150 km from the capital of Sri Lanka is Marissa, a beach where you can while away the hours diving, surfing, and experiencing some of the best whale watching in Asia. Let Hangover Hostels be your modern paradise. With free breakfast and morning yoga on the overhead deck, it’s no surprise our customers stay longer than they intended: “I booked the hostel for 2 days but ended up staying for 20 days! LOL!” Lol indeed. 6. Good Vibes Bungalows (Gili Trawangan, Indonesia) Prepare to become a part of the good vibes familia! There are no dorms in these newly built topical bungalows on Gili Trawangan, just 2- to 3-bed private rooms all to yourself. Picture sitting on your own private balcony eating free banana pancakes for breakfast! Good Vibes also make sure that there are hostel vibes with a garden, bar and organised adventures to meet other islanders. 7. Selina Bocas del Toro (Bocas del Toro, Panama)

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago made up of nine stunning islands, rainforest jungles, banana plantations and adventure. Selina Hostel is THE place to enjoy a rum punch and soak up the Caribbean vibes of the Bocos – it is literally ON the waterfront of Bocas Town! After floating in the azure Caribbean Sea, you can take a break from that tough island life with a free salsa class, rooftop yoga session, or let loose at the Caribbean Day Party on Saturdays! 8. Base Magnetic Island (Queensland, Australia) This hostel is on an island off of Queensland, an extraordinary oasis surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef, wild rainforest, untouched beaches and 800 koalas! You can choose from dorm rooms, female sanctuary dorms (which includes a sanctuary pamper package on arrival) or a double room if you want to wake up to the Pacific horizon every day. It’s certainly not deserted here though – the hostel bar is one of the liveliest on the Island, and every month they ignite their beach to throw the legendary Full Moon Down Under party. A note to Scuba enthusiasts – you better get your flippers on because Base ensures that you that you won’t find a cheaper diving qualification anywhere else in Australia! 9. F&F Hostel (Punta del Este, Uruguay) It’s easy to see why this haven holds a 9.5 superb rating from our customers. It’s next to the famous surfers’ beach Playa Brava in Punta del Este and has its own swimming pool, pool table and garden bar. But what makes F&F special is the homely atmosphere, awesome staff and dorms are the same price as a twin private for the sweet deal of £7 per room! Be careful, you may never leave! 10. Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay (Boracay, Philippines)

4. Tribu Hostel (Holbox Island, Mexico)

Ah, La Isla Holbox, where have you been all our lives? Holbox – meaning black hole – was founded in 1873 by pirates, and today it’s just 40 miles northwest of Cancun where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean. Today the island retains its magical charm with pink flamingos, colourful murals and yellow golf buggies, the only method of transport. The rainbow-painted Tribu Hostel is just 40 metres from the beach. Owners David and Mia (plus Mango, the hostel dog) encourage you to “leave your footprint” and try Spanish language courses, yoga sessions, a “blind dinner”, or just simply flop in the hammocks for your Mexican siesta!

“No stress, no worries” is the motto at this new hostel on Boracay Island. Mad Monkey make no qualms about showing you a good time with a swimming pool, two bars, and a “selection of salacious cocktails from dawn ‘til dusk” and a “mean Bloody Mary” for the day after. Could you be a kite boarding beach legend and you didn’t know it? The hostel is 1-minute walk from Bulabog Beach – the Number One kite boarding beach in Asia. A bonus for creatives (photographer, blogger, writer, musician or artist) you can join the Mad Monkey creative hub and stay for free! http:// madmonkeyhostels.com/creativehub/ Of course it’s not all about the mind-blowing locations and bargain prices. Hostels have a soul and character that you can’t buy and dinners over campfires, tours from locals and the fascinating travelers you meet enrich your trip more than a hotel ever will!

Local Sports Mike Johns makes it three Tropical golf from BJ in a row and five out of six by Derek Brook

by Peter Grey Khao Kheow Monday brought 18 golfers at the ready for the Growling Swan’s outing at Khao Kheow, a favorite of many golfers in Pattaya. We were playing C and A nines in that order. The course was in good nick, until the heavy rain hit. Of course it then became quite steamy, then most of our walkers found the going quite tough, particularly off the yellow tees with minimal run on the fairways, although this was not the case for all. With the field being under 20 we were to play one flight only with five placings in the run down. It was Mike Johns yet again returning with a good score of 36 points. Second in was Pete Bye two shots adrift. Third saw Mashi Kaneta come in a further two

Alan Sanders, Mike Johns and Brad Todd

shots behind. Then Eric Black and Kae Dayton needed to go to the count back with the judge getting the nod. We welcomed back the lovely Rita Zobelli and Peter Bye, but had to say goodbye to Bradd Todd and the colonel, Alan Sanders. Finding serenity in Kabinburi! by Steve Ellison

Silky Oaks – Stableford – White Tees With the All Thailand Tour invading Green Valley, we were shifted over to Silky Oaks for our comp today. There is no more snickering about this being ”Silly Oaks”, the 18 holes here have developed and matured quite nicely, thank you very much. Pricing is also correct, and we have no trouble filling up our sign-up sheet when we play here. If you had less than 40 points, fuggeddabowditt! The lads were playing their little hearts out here today and were rewarded with some fine scoring. A 41 for Brett was only good enough for third place, and Fred Birch (still recovering from his hole-in-one) blasted out a brilliant 43 that should have won on another day. Today the Silver Senior

was back, and Tommy Balch showed those young whipper snappers how the game should be played. I think this is the best round the ever young Balch has had in Thailand, and a great finish to his four month stay in Pattaya. By the time you read this, Tom will be landing back home in Washington State for a peaceful summer of bliss… and let the other guys have a chance! Results: 1st –Tommy Balch (32 S) 44 points 2nd – Fred Birch (16) 43 points 3rd – Brett Chan (18) 41 points Khao Kheow A&B – Stableford – Yellow Tees Nice weather (OK, a bit on the hot side) and a nice course

made sure that three vans were full for our outing at Khao Kheow this morning. There was realistic scoring today after yesterdays’ thrashing of Silky Oaks and only one man shot better than his handicap. We had a tie for second with regulars Kenny Aihara and Alan Rothwell both level at the 36 mark. Kenny also managed to slip inside for the Caddy Smile near pin on the fabulous island green B-8, so a good day for Mr. Aihara. Visiting American Bud O’Meara stole the show with a well-deserved win and 37 Stableford points were all that were required. Bud is another deportee and will be wheels up at this publication, so have a good trip back home, Bud!

Strange as it may seem, just one night away to Kabinburi and the relaxation of the Serenity Hotel works wonders. As I have written in the past, this hotel is the best on our list and a real treat at the end of the round.

Royal Lakeside (Stableford) I suppose most of our readers know where Royal Lakeside is, just in case you do not, it is a long way up the rickety road, well on the way to Bangkok. It is just about as far as we go to play golf on a daily basis. Depending how the traffic is it can be a long time or a quick trip. However as per this day if we play it on a Tuesday usually the trip is much better. So Tuesday off we went. Early morning at BJ’s is usually a happy place as the golfers tuck into a bit of food, have a hot drink and depart for the days test and the smiles are a mile wide. Into cars and away we went. On this day, the road was not too bad, in fact we made good time. The trip was quick and we were soon there. The entrance to Royal Lakeside is quite ordinary as is the ride to the clubhouse, however once inside it becomes quite impressive and a look at the club house from the course shows how impressive it is. On this day we were soon booked in, changed and onto the start where we were soon off. The weather was nice, if a bit warm, and if you looked ahead you would see a straight fairway and a par five, so off we go. The course seems to straight as you play it but of

In the daytime, the ladies took advantage of the spa and onsen (Japanese hot springs) and after golf we all put on the bathers for a dip in the pool. Our wine and cheese party was a great poolside chill out session in the bean bags as the vintage cheddar, black forest ham, black pepper cream cheese and several others went down a treat. Olivier put on a beautiful spread for their Thursday buffet to end a perfect evening. The leaderboard speaks for itself and Captain Phil finally got in a great round for the win. McHugh and Jimmy Brackett also put on a fine performance to fill up the podium tonight. Aussie sharpshooter Richie McGhee took the Caddy Smile near pin with a dink wedge flying 115 yards to precision on the 16th. Flight winners with one of BJ’s finest enjoying the moment course it has its bends, or doglegs. However the course is essentially what I would call a clean course and what you see is what you get. Well designed with definite fairways and clearly defined rough. The greens were a test and true and fast. This is designed as a course to enjoy your golf and will not destroy a golfer. Unless they play bad. The course was in good condition. Soon finished it was into the showers, and they are good, then into the restaurant. I collect the score cards here and put down the results so am busy and usually order ‘French Fries’ as I did on this day to eat while I record. Results in and ready to leave I paid for my French fries, at 150 baht, and left for Pattaya. I must say I forgot to check the Menu but they are a top club.

We got back a bit late so it was soon into the results. The best score of the day by far was by the winner of the A flight, zero to 18, when Landis Brooks scored a Gross 73 and 44 points to win the flight. Back in the dust a countback on 36 points saw Brian Parish in second and Steve Truelove in third. In the B flight another good score of 38 points saw Nigel Perry win ahead of Dick Warberg in second with 36 points and John Fenwick in third with 35 points. Front nine best score was Mick Coghlan with 20 points and best score back nine was Walter Baechli with 16 points. Then it was time To relax. T.T.F.N. morning as the festivities of last night were catching up with us. Nonetheless, we all made it down to the breakfast buffet to put on our game face. You gotta try Olivier’s homemade Raspberry Ginger jam on his amazing, fresh baked croissants to get things rolling. Two flights today made the long hitters happy and the rest of us were quite content at the 6,250 yard mark. For reference, this is actually the longest golf course in Thailand and from the back “Kato” tees it is an astonishing 8,075 yards! Yoshikazu Kato is the Japanese designer of K.B.S.C. and he also holds Treasure Hill and the legendary Blue Canyon Phuket to his credit. Richie McGhee plays a lot of tournaments at five-star golf courses around the world and his comment was that the fairways were the best he has ever seen. It was quality, not quantity on this trip and the gang had a great time but with the same complaint as last time…why can’t we stay another night? Peter and Kenny shared the win off the yellow box and Jimmy Brackett stole the win from Johnny McHugh having a 6,652 yard challenge. Alan

Rothwell beat them all for the Caddy Smile near pin to cap off another perfect road trip.

Local Sports Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik to race a Lamborghini GT3 in Blancpain Asia Thai racing driver Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik will compete in the inaugural season of Blancpain Sprint Series Asia in a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 run by Italian racing team Vincenzo Sospiri Racing. Vincenzo Sospiri is a former F1 driver and has recruited Sandy to partner Croatian driver Martin Kodric in the team’s assault on the Blancpain Asia title. This will see Sandy’s first season in a GT3 car, deciding to branch out from open-wheel racing which he has competed in since 2010. The team has done comprehensive testing of the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in Italy to ensure that it is fine tuned before the official tests in Sepang, Malaysia. The first race of the season will take place on the Sepang Circuit from the 7th-9th April. Sandy feels confident that he and the team can produce good results throughout the season. “I’m excited to be joining Vincenzo Sospiri Racing for my first year in GTs. We have completed a few days of testing, and have another test scheduled in Imola in a week’s time. My teammate

has experience in the Huracan Supertrofeo and I’m sure that together we will be able to fight for podiums this season. The Blancpain Asia grid is shaping up to be very competitive with

Bangpra (white tees) It was nice to see a couple of new faces, one from Oz and one from Japan, join the Bunker Boys for today’s round at Bangpra. Sixteen players made the trip so just one flight. The course was all but deserted as we teed off in anticipation of a quick round, however, the weather gods intervened and by the time we reached the fourth a combination of thunder, lightening, and heavy rain had us racing for cover. The ugly weather continued till the ninth when it cleared and became hot and steamy. Most struggled with the conditions with the exception of Les Cobban who on his favorite course returned the only par round. One group had a turtle for company for a few holes carried by a very caring caddie until we reached a pond where it was returned to a more appropriate setting. A benefit of Bangpra is that players have the opportunity to commune with nature if they tire of golf. Near Pins: Jimmy Carr, Chris Depp, Akira Sekiya Royal Lakeside (blue tees) A very fine low season turnout of 23 golfers made it to Royal Lakeside for today’s round, four did not want to participate in the competition so a field of nineteen meant only one flight. A 50-minute drive to a course in pristine condition made the trip worthwhile. Today was the second medal comp of the month, a format that always generates angst amongst some of our members. Les Cobban continued where he left off on Monday returning an impressive net 69 off

an 8.7 handicap. In second place and losing the count back on the back nine having one shot more than Les, was new member Brad Gordon, unkindly referred to by some as the burglar from down under. A number of our members will soon follow their normal migration pattern and return to foreign parts, among them Ken Davidson and Raleigh Gosney. Results: 1st - Les Cobban (9) 69 net oco 2nd - Brad Gordon (27) 69 3rd - Dave Maw (13) 72 Near Pins: Les Cobban, Dave Maw (2), Thomas Nyborg Already we are starting to see courses offer special low season deals with the introduction of “Sports Day” pricing. Most will relish the prospect of more affordable and faster golf. Preparations are already underway for our annual Songkran getaway. This is an event not to be missed. Normally the venue is Kanchanaburi but this year for a change the venue is Kao Yai, so a good time is expected by all those venturing forth. Pleasant Valley (white tees) Life is full of surprises and golfing in Pattaya throws up more than its fair share. Our first surprise happened at check in at Pleasant Valley where we discovered it cost 200 baht more to walk than use a cart, so naturally, everyone had a cart and those in need of exercise walked. Another surprise occurred on the 160-meter par three 13th where Neil Griffin took out the big dog and proceeded to nail down a near pin. It’s easy to tell when some are having a good round, in Raleigh Gosney’s case it is marked by the absence of regular “Damn it” and in his last round for the

Emerald GC It was 17 golfers (both male and female) set out to take on Emerald Golf course, with 1,150 baht all-inclusive I am surprised that we did not get a larger crew. Playing from the white tees the course was in tip top condition, with the greens playing true. Great value for a very good course. Weather was fine, a little on the hot side but no rain

or any sight of rain suited our players (or most of our players) turned out a great day as it always is at this course! It was Irish eyes are smiling our friend has returned and came back in the fashion that only he can, JJ Harney greeted the judges with a fine 41 points. We would all like that! Taking second position was Martin Kempton, has been a little while since Marty

Jimmy Carr present tour of duty was on his best behavior but unfortunately lost third place on a count back to Keith Smithson who had 18 on the back nine to Raleigh’s 15. Following his first win in a while, last week’s winner Jimmy Carr continued his resurgence with a well compiled 40 points to take first place. Are we seeing the beginnings of a sustained run of good form from Jimmy or is this just a “flash in the pan?” Time will tell. Despite some firmly held beliefs that Pleasant Valley is in fact not pleasant, the course was in very good order and continues to improve with every visit and many of our golfers continue to enjoy playing here. Heavy overnight rain made the course long and the greens, particularly on the front nine, were among the slowest we have encountered in a while and were in need of a visit from a mower which was not possible due to the rain. Despite that, scores were not adversely affected. All eyes should now be open for special deals from courses, and bookings should be made with this in mind. Pattana A & C – St Another Friday, and what better way to kick off the weekend than with a fine round of golf? Of course to many regulars everyday is Friday, or one of the other six...

it doesn't matter. With many regulars traveling or escaping the heat, we had a tidy 17 golfers head out to Pattana, one of the best courses in the area. This day the Tropicals left extra early to get the round started before a charity

tournament at Pattana. Some liked the early and cooler time; others dragged themselves in at the last moment. Pattana? What's not to like? The layout is interesting; there are three nines to spread out the customers, and a clubhouse that rivals any in the area. Sure we'd like it a little cheaper, but it is competitive and near the top of what you get for the money. Even the caddies are overall well trained. Oh... did we forget to mention it's usually in excellent condition? It was this day also. Pattana is not overly easy, but fair, and the nice fairways assure you can get always get a club head on

the ball. With one flight, the final scores had to be good. It was a close finish, by which we mean a count-back was required. Finally John Davis (13) edged out Bob Watson (8) at the 38 point mark. The next two places were decided on a triple score count-back with Jerry Garcia (18) over Brian Parish (13) with 36 points, leaving Paul Weatherley (17) the job to clap and smile. Overall it was a great day.

18th – Martin Kempton We welcomed back JJ Harney, Keith Buchanan and Roger Ellis, but then say farewell to Martin Todd and David Maw We hope you travel safe and don’t stay away too long! We once again let our resident charity hound D-For off the chain to collect for the needy in Pattaya. Golfers and Punters at the Swan should be commended for the way

they support D-For and of course the needy in Pattaya. The GS is a friendly golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers male and female to have a hit at any of our weekly outings. You & Your Pets Tripping with Toto and Tabby Do you enjoy driving around Pattaya with your dog or cat at your side? Take note: such joy rides can be dangerous for your furry friends…and for you. If you allow your pet to hop into the car when you set out to run errands or take a leisurely drive along the beach, you might want to consider safer activities. Particularly if Toto or Tabby are not harnessed or confined in a pet carrier—which they likely are not. If your pet’s in a crate and you have an accident, he is far less likely to be thrown around—or even out of—the car, thus reducing chances of serious injury. Do you take your children with you as well? That ups

the risk. Make sure they are constantly aware of pets so they don’t shut the door as pets are entering or exiting the vehicle. And do not let kids or pets ride in the front seat. If you’re involved in a crash, they could be severely injured by deployed airbags. Other hazards also arise with a pet in the front seat that may jump onto your lap, distracting you, and or jump onto the floor under your feet or, worse yet, under the brake or gas pedal. That’s a major danger that can be prevented by securing pets with seatbelts or crates in the backseat. “But,” you may argue, “my dog loves sticking her nose out the window as we drive.” Dicey on more than one level. A dog with her snout out an open window is exposed to dirt, rocks, dust and other debris that can easily puncture and scratch their eyes. Beyond which, what if she sees a squirrel or a cat and jumps out the window while you’re driving at high speed? Finally, there’s the hazard we’ve often been warned about: leaving your pet in a locked car, particularly in Pattaya. Even on a relatively cool day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly spike to life-threatening levels. Next time you take off to tend to tasks, tell Toto and Tabby to stay at home and guard the house.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

Wilber

This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his 3 brothers and sisters. Sadly he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home unlike his siblings. As you can see he is grown up now and still waiting to be chosen.

Smudge

This friendly but shy girl has been with us for a few years now. She just loves helping in the garden or with the chores! Smudge's best friend is her sister Bobbie Bobtail who is also shown in this article and it would be nice to find them a home together.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

James

James is a fine looking fellow who is friendly and loving but quite shy with strangers at first. He loves running and playing in the garden and his favorite hobby is teasing the girls here. A new home with an outside area for him would be ideal.

Pet Poisoning

Poison is a common threat to pets that everyone should anticipate. In general, any substances that are harmful for people are also harmful for pets, like cleaning products, pesticides, and antifreeze. If your pet's skin or eyes are exposed to a toxic product, check the product label for instructions on what to do when people suffer exposure; if the label says wash the area with soap and water, then wash your pet's skin with soap and water (protecting his eyes, mouth and nose). If the label tells you to flush the skin or eyes with water, do this immediately for your pet. And then take the animal to a veterinarian, clinic or animal hospital immediately. Describe the symptoms to the vet and provide the following information: the name or description of the toxin; the amount the animal was exposed to or length of time of the exposure, and how long it's been since

Bobby-Bobtail

This friendly soul has been with us for a few years now, she was always a bit shy when people came to visit but seems to have come out of her shell over the last few months. She is happy to be an indoor cat too so would be ideal for a secure apartment. your pet ate it or was exposed to it. It’s also a good idea to take the product container and any material your pet may have vomited or chewed.

Going to the Dogs...

Cat Corner Tip

I like a bit of mongrel myself, whether it's a man or a dog; they're the best for everyday.

~ George Bernard Shaw

Smuggling a cat out of ancient Egypt was punishable by death. Phoenician traders eventually succeeded in smuggling felines, which they sold to rich people in Athens and other major cities. Puppies are born blind, deaf and toothless. The ancient Mbaya Indians of the Gran Chaco in South America believed that humans originally lived underground until dogs dug them up.

Are you a vegetarian? Would you like your pets to share your meat-free lifestyle? Forget about it. Cats, for one, are "obligate carnivores" — they must eat meat to survive. They depend on nutrients that are found only in animal tissue. Beyond which, many cats do not drink an adequate amount of water every day; the moisture in canned food helps supplant at least some needed water. If your pet is a dog, however, he may be able to handle a vegetarian diet if it is well balanced. But check with your vet first.
