Cambodian visa confusion

Cambodian immigration authorities announced that, effective last month, the regulations for long-stay visas for foreigners would be overhauled. The general idea is to separate the various categories - working expats or retirees or students - each with their own defined visa and required paperwork. However, the much-trumpeted innovations have created a good deal of confusion. Traditionally, the Cambodian government has had a much more relaxed view of long-term expats than the Thai one. Here, in Thailand, one-year extensions for retirement or study or marriage have each had their own bureaucracy with detailed documentation and minimum income or bank deposits. The Thai work permit is separately a most complex animal and is linked to the national incometax system. By contrast, any expats wanting to live in Cambodia have simply needed to obtain a US$35 “ordinary” (formerly “business”) visa on arrival for one month -- not a “tourist”

visa - and have been able to extend it for a full year by paying around US$280 to an agent. No documentation has been necessary, apart from the applicant’s passport. It should be noted that it is almost universal practice in Cambodia for these extensions to be handled by liaison agents. The foreigner is not expected to turn up at the police immigration office and isn’t really welcome there. The agents, who are also travel and tour agencies, can be found in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other tourist areas. For example, there are several on Phnom Phen’s waterfront district known as Riverside, all of whom interact regularly with the immigration department. This straightforward policy was scheduled to end at the beginning of September. It was announced that foreigners seeking to renew their one-year, “business” extension would need to show a Cambodian work permit which in turn required a letter from their employer. In the past, the requirement for a work permit was rarely enforced.

Moreover, foreigners applying for work permits on a selfemployed basis or because they had opened a business were sometimes refused, so they chose not to bother. At the time of writing, it seems that the one-year extensions continue to be renewed without the need to obtain a work permit, but many working expats are confused to say the least. Another group in limbo are the 20,000 or so foreigners living in Cambodia as retirees, some married to Cambodian nationals. Traditionally, they have simply followed the same

path as the working ones - pay the US$280 on an annual basis - and forget all about work permits. The Cambodian immigration authorities have stated that the retirees will now have their own one-year retirement extension which will also cost US$280 and will -- maybe -- require unspecified proof that the applicant is retired in his or her home country. Whether this new retirement visa has actually been introduced, and precisely on what terms, is hard to say. Some agents say it is possible, others deny it.

News Banglamung damn collapses

Katoey and Thai lady hit Russian tourist

Car stolen from parking lot A Thai man and his Chinese girlfriend parked their car in a pub’s car park, only to return to an empty parking space. The pub’s security guard said two or three young men drove off in the couple’s vehicle, claiming that the car was owned by a relative. Pattaya’s finest is reviewing CCTV footage.

Russian tourist Alexey Chebotarev, 44, was hit by a Thai woman and a lady boy on Jomtien Beach. The victim has been on the phone when the suspects approached and talked to him. Teen thief arrested

The months’-long battle between Pattaya’s taxi drivers and Uber was settled following an altercation between two competing drivers seen in an online video. It seems that an Uber driver was picking up a passenger but was hemmed in by a metered taxi. When shouting turned to fisticuffs, bystanders restrained both men and the passenger departed on foot. The altercation brought the dispute to a head after months of complaints from taxi drivers and more and

more passengers opting to use Uber and Grab services, both of which offer fixed rates while taxis notoriously refused to turn on their mandates meters. As a result, a meeting at Pattaya City Hall last week settled the matter, ruling that Uber could not operate in the city; Uber drivers would be fined 2,000 for violating the order, and taxi drivers were once again warned to use their meters or else. The group also was told that officials are considering allowing taxi drivers to raise their fares. Master Class Beat the Heat Zumba Fitness was held in Eastern Grand Hotel in Soi Kaotalo. Organizers from Bangkok taught the Zumba fitness routine to nearly 100 participants.

A Thai teenager pinched a handbag that a Russian couple had left on the table while they swan in Pattaya Park. When the husband and wife returned to the spot, the bag was nowhere in sight, so the tourists reported the theft to police. Officers reviewed CCTV footage and traced the thief to the Sriracha area where they made an arrest. The 18-year-old suspect was in possession of the handbag and its contents, including a gold necklace, cell phone and documents.

Cambodian visa confusion

Insiders, familiar with Cambodian immigration matters, say there is actually a heated debate going on with government officials about whether the country wants to follow Thailand and introduce various extension categories with detailed check-lists. The laissezfaire policy of the past, say some Cambodian sources, has worked well without a copious bureaucracy and one-year visa holders could always be questioned as they passed through airport or border checkpoints. But others claim that the easy-visa policy has encouraged foreign criminals and undesirable elements to settle there. That sounds familiar! In fact, it is not uncommon for immigration authorities in Cambodia to herald a new policy which never happens. Two years ago there was a fanfare about three-year tourist visas but they were never introduced and have apparently been forgotten. The normal tourist visa remains one month and is purchased for US$30 on arrival, although it can be

extended once for a further 30 days. That will continue as before. In fairness, Cambodia is currently undergoing tremendous economic and social changes. Its economic growth rate is amongst the highest in Asia and Phnom Penh is rapidly being transformed into a contemporary mega-city on the back of huge Chinese investment in infrastructure and transport. The traditional reliance on the United States and the European Union is shrinking even as local politics are turning increasingly authoritarian in nature, as in many other ASEAN countries. Expats who are considering moving to Cambodia as a base should certainly obtain the 30-day “ordinary” visa - not “tourist” - on entry. This can be extended up to one year without problems. By the time of the first renewal in 2018, the visa options may be clearer. Those facing renewal in the near future will keep closely in touch with their agent for the latest updates.

Chiang Mai gets ready to host ASEAN Tourism Forum 2018 Chiang Mai is counting down to the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2018 (ATF) from January 22 to 26, 2018, as the city makes final arrangements for one of the most significant annual travel events in Asia. ATF rotates between ASEAN member nations and comprises numerous high-level public and private sector meetings. These include the ASEAN Tourism Ministers Meeting, a gathering of ASEAN National Tourism Organisation chiefs plus airline meetings, press briefings, tourism conferences and the must-attend Travel Exchange (TRAVEX) trade fair. Widely viewed as the region’s best buying and selling platforms for Asia’s burgeoning tourism industry, ATF returns to Thailand for the sixth time with the focus on its iconic northern travel destination of Chiang Mai, also known as the ‘Rose of the North’. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand said, “Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city and the economic engine of Northern Thailand and remains one of the Kingdom’s mustvisit destinations. “However, Chiang Mai maintains its charming traditions and is still known for its lovely Lanna temples and family friendly attractions. Chiang Mai’s travel trade continues

to expand its product offering, diversifying recently into adrenalinebased adventure tourism and gastronomy tourism to name just a few activities.” Chiang Mai was recently named third best city in the world by the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards: The World’s Top 15 Cities for 2017 in a recent reader’s poll. The Travel + Leisure magazine poll places Chiang Mai tops among Asian cities for the second consecutive year, while Bangkok appears number eight. The score is based on a survey of over 300,000 international Travel + Leisure readers who were asked to rate the ‘best of the best’ in international travel experiences. The award-winning city also ranked 12th in the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards Top 25 Destinations in Asia.

Yuthasak added, “Chiang Mai received the accolades because it remains the perfect place to enjoy unique Thai local experiences such as traditional fire massages at Ban Rai Kong Khing Community Centre or a sit-down Northern-style Khantoke dinner. “Blessed with a wonderful climate, rich local cultural, natural heritage and numerous Royal Projects, Chiang Mai continues to benefit from convenient air access with a multitude of flights arriving from around Southeast Asia, North Asia and Europe in addition to numerous domestic flights. Chiang Mai boasts a complete range of accommodation including many top-class resorts and hotels, said TAT.” Registration for the ATF 2018 in Chiang Mai is still open both for buyers and media.

News TAT to target more Japanese first timers and female visitors Promoting more Japanese first timers and female visitors to Thailand was the core theme of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s marketing presence at the Tourism Expo Japan 2017 (TEJ), the country’s largest trade event held on September 21 to 24 in Tokyo. Formerly known as the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) Tourism Expo, the trade show was attended by exhibitors from 150 countries and regions around the world, with over 1,180 companies. Nearly 50,000 trade visitors and 136,000 consumers visit Japan’s premier travel and tourism event. This year was an important year to promote Thailand as a preferred destination for Japanese travellers, as the two nations celebrate 130 years of diplomatic relations. Japan is one of seven countries expected to generate more than one million arrivals this year. With the Japanese economy showing strong signs of recovering, TAT believes the number of Japanese travelling abroad will soon be rising significantly. Thailand welcomed 1.4 million visitors from Japan in 2016, a 5 percent increase over 2016. In January to August 2017, Japanese arrivals to Thailand totalled 890,317, up 6.07 percent over the same period of 2016. TAT expects the total number of Japanese arrivals to hit 1.5 million this year, generating tourism income of around 214 billion yen (65 billion baht). At the TEJ 2017, the Thai team organised a number of events to clarify the situation in Thailand to Japanese travel trade buyers, briefed them on the marketing and

promotion strategies in Japan, and introduced many of the emerging new products, services and activities of interest to the Japanese visitors. The 108 sq.m. Thai pavilion had the theme of ‘Local Experience’ and ‘Women Travelling to Thailand’. The ten Thai exhibitors in the Thai pavilion include Asiatique the Riverfront, Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant, Urbana Hospitality, Ramada Plaza Menam Riverside Bangkok, King Power International, The ASHLEE hotels – Patong Phuket, Thai Airways International, Olonade Travel Thailand, Mae Jo Golf Club and Resort, and the Duangtawan Hotel. Other Thai private sector companies were represented independently. Trade and public visitors to the pavilion were also treated to cultural performances including massage of anchorite, Thai classical dance, a demonstration of Thai boxing, Thai food, quiz games, and photo shooting with Happy Chan. TAT also launched “Meet the NEW Thailand” campaign by changing the image of Thailand in the Japanese market as a destination for females, youth, working groups, and first-time visitors through Japanese idol group “Nogizaka 46”. A workshop on targeting the female market was also organised. TAT G o v e r n o r Y u t h a s a k Supasorn said, “TAT is seeking to attract more middle to high-end visitors by targeting first-time visitors, as well as university students and newly working women. Country Group Development joins Canadian embassy of Thailand to support ‘Clean Up The World’ event in Bangkok On Tuesday, September 19, leading Bangkok-based international real estate developer, Country Group Development, in partnership with the Canadian embassy of Thailand, joined the annual “Clean Up the World” initiative along the Chao Phraya River. Some 70 volunteers from both organizations, including Country Group Development’s CEO Ben Taechaubol and Her Excellency Donica Pottie from the Canadian embassy, helped clean up a stretch of the river close to company’s landmark residential urban resort project, Chao Phraya Estate. “The Chao Phraya River has played a significant role as Thailand’s lifeblood throughout history, and the waterway holds a special place in the hearts of all Thai people as symbol of Bangkok,” said Taechaubol. “Now more than ever, it’s important that we help protect the River of Kings for future generations,” he added. This year marks the 24th anniversary of the Clean Up the World campaign, which is held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). To mark the event, Bangkok River

Partners worked closely with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and several foreign embassies in the Thai capital to clean the streets, spruce up green spaces, and remove rubbish from the many canals that run into the Chao Phraya River. For the first time, the organisers of the event also recorded data on the waste collected during the activities in order to work towards their long-term goal of totally eliminating river pollution. In collaboration with Wayne Phillips of Mahidol University and Madeleine Recknagel of Bangkok University, all

EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY ABLE THE DISABLED FOUNDATION, HORSESHOE POINT PATTAYA Volunteers needed Able the Disabled Foundation (ADF) Thailand is a foundation that provides therapy riding for special needs children. A horse’s movement is therapeutic and improves the child’s balance, coordination, behavior and muscle tone, along with confidence and self-esteem. The warmth of the horse’s body and rhythmic gait relaxes spastic muscles and stimulates muscular development. The horse’s movement naturally in walk simulates the movement of the human walk. ADF Thailand relies heavily on volunteers for its operation, and community support for its funding. There is a constant need for motivated, cheerful and reliable people to help. It is not necessary to know anything about horses, or disabled children, to make a big difference in the lives of these riders. ADF teaches its volunteers what they need to know in order to walk alongside a rider or lead a pony. The classes are held at Horseshoe Point on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10 am to 12 pm. Private lessons are available afternoons from 2 to 6 pm weekdays and weekends. If you wish to know more about volunteering, contact Sandra Cooper on 086 848 3684. the collected waste will be counted and categorised to establish a baseline for future comparison. This insightful hard data will then be used to create measurable goals and provide high-impact solutions. “Being able to call Chao Phraya River home is a privilege, and one that we certainly don’t take for granted,” explained Taechaubol. “Everyone shares a responsibility not only for keeping the river clean, but also making it more beautiful than it was before. We look forward to collaborating with many more of these valuable environmental initiatives in the future.”

Scheduled for completion next year, Country Group Development’s prestigious Chao Phraya Estate encompasses some 14 acres of prime waterfront land and features a 73-storey residential tower housing the ultra-luxurious Four Seasons Residences Bangkok at Chao Phraya River. The development will also bring two new worldclass hotels to the capital – Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River and Capella Hotel Bangkok – offering owners and visitors from around the globe the chance to enjoy modern luxury waterfront living at its finest.

Rebuilt my burned body A little Thai girl wants to travel to France where a dedicated team of surgeons wait to give her arm reconstruction and hair implants after she was trapped in a fire that ravaged her house. Boilt, who lives in a poor neighborhood of Surin in the North-East of Thailand, got her left arm melted and face burned only one month after her birth in a fire that destroyed her parent’s house. A French expat living in Thailand married to Boilt’s aunt, found a surgeon’s association in France called “Face au monde” which will be able to take care of the young girl. Through several surgeries they will rebuild her hand and the damaged part of her face and skull. In order to make this happen, the family is currently trying to raise funds through crowdfunding so Boilt would become happier and more independent and would fulfill her dream to look like every other little girl.

ightly this extraordinary value-for-money seafood extravaganza presents its pageant of quality dishes for only B.700 net or with free flow wine for only B.990 net complete with nightly live music. Mick and I were invited recently and were blown away with the premium quality of the buffet presenting a spectacular spread not normally offered at these prices. Santos entertains nightly and the whole experience is lavish and abundant with a cool, laid-back ambiance. Take the lift to the 6th floor and on exiting you are thrown headfirst into the fantasy world of the ocean; jelly fish lamps hang from the ceiling, a fish tail forms the bar with those industrially

conceived elements of naval ships and submarines all vying for your attention. It is here, in the all day dining restaurant, called Big Fish, where the nightly buffet is held. This extravagant seafood BBQ buffet has already gained a faithful following and with the addition of even more luxury items will undoubtedly gain more. The prices are extraordinary for the quality of the produce that is available, especially when we tell you that imported oysters have now been added to the already sumptuous fresh seafood items. Dinner starts at 6.00 pm (until 10.00 pm) and we were fully aware that every food item was constantly replenished throughout the evening, yes, even those expensive babies, the oysters. The house wine

is a pleasant Spanish white, Finca de Malpica and Mar y Sol a very quaffable Chilean red. It’s certainly free flow with efficient servers reloading your glass at every turn. Explore all those pots and chafing dishes before commencing your foray into the delights of buffet dining. The freshest seafood: mussels, crabs, jumbo prawns, squid and of course those oysters languish on their icy trays awaiting your selection. If you wish you can select uncooked shell fish and request that they are cooked directly and delivered to your table. The freshest sushi winks at you from across the room together with its companions of seaweed salad and

EAR OF FLYING? Not me. Train-spotter not me. I am more of a plane-spotter and sometimes I like to drop big words like propeller, airframe, fuselage and fly-by-wire. Linen, wood and wires that's what Wright brothers rickety flying machine named Flyer was made of. But on that cold December day 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, it did lift-off and fly 12 seconds, a distance of 67 meters (a run shorter than the wing of new the Airbus A350).

Full throttle to 2017. Pattaya Today Life & Leisure Aviation writer John K. Lindgren member of a select Thai media group, has landed in Toulouse south western France, after a memorable BangkokFrankfurt flight on the Thai Airways super jumbo A380 in the Royal Silk Class, THAI's business class. “Smooth as Silk” in every sense from the seamless service, in-flight entertainment, delectable cuisine, superb wine assortment and the spacious full lie-flat seat. Thai Airways A380 fleet consists of six double-decker A380s. TG flies them on premier routes from Bangkok to Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, London, Paris and Frankfurt. Our next leg Toulouse. Toulouse Airbus HQ - Thai Airways A350 XWB Final Assembly & Delivery

Grand Lobby

Up Up and Away on TG's 6th Brand New A350 “Ferry Flight” Toulouse-Bangkok by John K. Lindgren

Moments after we touch down at Aéroport de Toulouse–Blagnac (TLS) on starboard side I spot a huge, white hilarious guppy looking airplane. It's the Beluga the whale-shaped super transporter specifically built to carry the oversized A380 parts from the Airbus plants in the UK, Spain, Germany for final assembly in Toulouse, France. Toulouse located on the banks of La Garonne river, is France's aeronautics capital, a telecom research center and university town also called La Ville Rose, because of the pink-orange bricks used in its architecture. France’s fourth-largest city hums with innovation and joie de vivre. Squares full of cafés and restaurants, Gothic churches, a student buzz and fine restaurants serving everything from foie gras and truffles to delectable wines. This is a whistle-stop tour. However, after the city-walk we have time “at leisure” which is much appreciated by the Thai female journalists who shoot straight for Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Galerie Lafayette department store. The compulsory “Le Shopping.” The ollowing day under cobalt blue skies - Airbus HQ. The company, previously called Sud Aviation and Aerospatiale was born 1970. Today a European multinational corporation that designs, manufactures, and

sells civil and military aeronautical products worldwide. Staff: 55,000 around the globe. Suppliers: 7,700. Airbus' comprehensive product line boasts of highly successful aircraft families ranging from 100 to more than 600 seats. From the smallest A300 to the biggest A380. Including the new technologically advanced, twin-engine Airbus A350 XWB mid-size, long-range passenger aircraft. Vanessa Gerencseri A350 Marketing Manager “A350 XWB will shape the future of air travel. We have currently 848 orders to airlines in the Americas, Europe, Asia & Pacific and Africa & Middle East. 84 aircraft flying with 12 airlines and more than 46,000 flights to date or 11 million passengers have flown it” says Vanessa Gerencseri. She adds, “The A350 XWB is powered by two state-of-the-art massive RollsRoyce Trent XWB engines. The world's most efficient large aero-engine flying today” Here are some fast facts about the new 350 XWB. First of all “XWB“ – stand for Extra Wide Body. The cabin brand Airspace by Airbus providing more room, higher ceiling, and the largest overhead storage bins. More comfort in business and economy class and a new Innovation: “Cabin mood lighting“ to reduce jet lag. Furthermore, the A350 boasts 25 percent lower fuel burn, and lowest twin engine noise level of all aircrafts.

And world's largest carbon-fibre wing panel, constructed from 53 percent composite materials which makes the plane extra light. Note, also the cool A350 trademark winglets that save kerosene by reducing drag while also lowering noise and carbon dioxide emissions. Aerodynamics inspired by nature or the flight of the eagle. Joaquin Toro-Prieto, Head of Market Analytics & Messaging says “Passenger demand will continue to grow over 35,000 new aircraft required by 2036. Market value of 5,3 trillion USD”. He adds, “we have a long-standing partnership with THAI. First order was in 1977 for the original Airbus A300 B4. In 2004 six A380 double-deckers ordered. Mr Toro-Prieto elaborates, “currently Thai operates a Airbus fleet of 48 aircraft: 20 A320 (THAI Smile), 17 A330s, six A380s and five new A350 XWBs”. Onwards. From marketing to assembly. The newest Airbus final assembly line (FAL) inside the Toulouse airport In the towering, cavernous hangars, the size of 300 tennis courts where huge Airbus airliners are assembled including the join-up “marriage” of fuselage and wings. I notice that everything is XXL, super sized, super clean and so quiet. Here safety is paramount. I see bright yellow warning signs “FOD!” Foreign Object Discharge or “Do Not Drop Stuff On The Factory Floor!” Conceived with

eco-efficiency in mind, this streamlined aircraft assembly process for the A350 allows teams to work in parallel, reducing the time from start of final assembly to aircraft delivery by 30 percent. Last day, the day of the “Ferry Flight”. Airbus delivery center. Like a swank First Class lounge with catering and an observation deck. Outside on the tarmac THAI’s sixth A350 XWB has been royally bestowed the name PHU PHA MAN aircraft registration: HS-THB (“Hotel Sierra - Tango, Hotel, Bravo”) is now ready in shining TG livery for the flight to Suvarnabhumi (BKK). For the eleven hour flight to Thailand Khun Khun Itt Sirisawat, the THAI chief technical pilot for A330/350 will be the commanding officer on the ferry flight. “Most of the pilots that fly the A350 also love it. The cockpit is wider and has a lot of space. This is the most beautiful cockpit in the world right now compared to other aircraft,” says Captain Sirisawat. THAI’s A350 XWB offers outstanding two-class service. Royal Silk Class with Business Class seats arranged four abreast in a 1-2-1 configuration for a total of 32 seats, with a width of 21 inches which can be adjusted to 180 degree recline, and allowing individual easy access to entry and exit from any seats without disturbing other passengers. Each seat is fully equipped with a 16 inch touchscreen with Wi-Fi and the latest in-flight entertainment system. Economy Class

seats are arranged nine abreast in a 3-3-3 configuration for a total of 289 seats, with a generous 32-inch pitch and 18-inch width. Each seat is equipped with an 11 inch touchscreen and Wi-Fi connection. Both Business Class and Economy Class passengers enjoy wider, more comfortable seats and with more leg room. By the way. Airbus has it but Boeing does not have it - the tail mounted external camera. Who needs in-flight entertainment when you can watch the world below in-real time. High definition, too. Currently THAI's Airbus A350 routes include Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Frankfurt, Bangkok-Milan, Bangkok-Rome, Bangkok-Singapore, Bangkok-Brisbane, and BangkokPhuket-Frankfurt. Even if you're a not a plane spotter next time you see a big, long and sleek airliner on the tarmac of an commercial airport. And if it's got that cool raccoon mask windscreen, and those unique eagle inspired wingtips. Yes, it's the new Airbus A350 XWB-900. Get a boarding-pass and a great in-flight experience awaits you. www.thaiairways.com www.airbus.com

STARS BBB

A Hidden Gem in the Huay Yai Countryside Set in the rural Huay Yai countryside, near to Phoenix Golf Club, the new Stars BBB (Bar, Bistro, Bungalows) is a unique lifestyle destination. With the owners, Kim Nutcha and Mike Contoni firmly on the radar to turn their new venture into the best country resort in this up and coming area, it is a delightful find nestled as it is in its pastoral setting. The bar/bistro is a welcoming restaurant zone of a long bar with comfy stools and a separate breakfast-anytime nook furnished

with sofas for relaxing with one of Kim’s speciality coffees, smoothies and pastries. This bistro of good eating is under the direction of the charming Chef Kim who pioneers her food philosophy of quality combined with value for money. The allday menu (10.00 am to 10.00 pm) will satisfy all your food fancies embracing not only the best in Western cuisine but also everyone’s favourite Thai dishes. Kim brings boundless enthusiasm to the venture; her proficiency

in the kitchen and managerial skills throughout the resort are exemplary. Mike brings 30 years of serving in the US Navy, his time in Japan at the helm of his own bar together with the experience of running a small hotel in Pattaya. Mick and I visited on a Friday lunchtime so, as tradition dictates, we ordered the fish and chips (B.290). But I’m running away with myself, I’m sure you’d like to know what’s on the menu for breakfast. They all receive Kim’s excellent freshly ground coffee and toast and offer cheese omelets, the country skillet, two eggs, bacon and vegetables in the pan, the all-star English (B.220), plus eggs any style and the healthy option with yogurt, muesli oats and fresh fruit and honey (B.170). Snacks to fill a gap anytime during the day feature battered calamari, chunky potato wedges with tartar sauce (B.160) chicken nuggets and spring rolls. We sampled the spring rolls before our fish ‘n chips and they hit the table hot, crispy and tasty. For heartier fare there’s short pork ribs in tomato sauce with butter fried rice or the Stars homemade cheese hamburger plus a mountain of French fries. For duck lovers there’s a grilled smoked breast with cherry sauce and grilled vegetables or for

a light lunch, the smoked salmon or smoked chicken salad come highly recommended. Pasta is served (spaghetti, fettuccini or penne) with a seafood tomato sauce, a meat sauce with pork or spicy chilli, bacon and anchovies in an olive oil emulsion (B.240). House wine is B.100 for a generous glass and there is a selection of wine by the bottle: Hugo Cassanova Chardonnay and Merlot, Stonefish, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz and Beau Rivage with prices starting at B.780 for the Hugo Cassanova labels. Kim’s Thai dishes reflect her love of the cuisine and present fried rice with chilli paste and salted egg or with stir fried chicken, beef or seafood with basil, minced pork or chicken with spicy herbs on rice (B.180) and more. The curries

include not only Thai Penang and Green but also two Japanese Tonkatsu curries with crispy pork and either rice or salad. Stars BBB is a hidden gem tucked away in the Huay Yai countryside but once found it gives the perfect reason to get out of the city and enjoy the beauty of rural Thailand while stopping for an icy beer or a spot of breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Tel: 064 980 1956 or check it out on www.starsbbb.com or the facebook page. For directions look up Stars Bar Bistro & Bungalows in Huay Yai on Google Maps. Directly adjacent to Stars BBB is Thailand’s only inside lawn bowling rink, ,1000 square meters of covered sports area with a variety of games.

fairness-fitness-finery Laser Skin Resurfacing Carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers are one of the latest advances in nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments. The CO2 has the longest wavelength of all the lasers on the market and can be used safely on darker skin types with appropriate adjustments in the settings. Fractionated CO2 lasers excel at treating deeper wrinkles, more severe textural by Dr Natnicha Loichuen changes from sun damage, wrinkles, blotchiness, acne scars, and surgical or traumatic scars. It can be used on the delicate eyelid skin and around the mouth. It is also a very effective treatment for sun damage and precancerous growths. It can be used to improve texture, wrinkles, and blotchiness on the neck, chest, arms and legs but this should only be done by experts because the risk of complications, including scarring, is higher in these areas. How does the fractional CO2 laser work? The fractional CO2 laser takes the CO2 laser beam and fractionates, or pixellates that beam into thousands of tiny little shafts of light. These tiny shafts of light penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The skin then repairs those tiny shafts by pushing out the old sun-damaged skin and replacing it with new skin. The “collateral” heat damage also helps to shrink existing collagen. Benefits of CO2 laser skin treatment By precisely removing damaged skin layer by layer, a CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment is able to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, “turning back the clock” on your complexion and revealing the more youthful looking skin that lies underneath. The CO2 laser – when used for the skin resurfacing procedure – can also lessen the appearance of scars and many other skin imperfections. Benefits include not only the effective correction of moderate to deep lines and wrinkles, but also treatment for uneven pigmentation, photodamage, precancerous spots, and a host of other skin imperfections and benign lesions. If you believe you may be a candidate for CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment, a qualified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist can carefully analyze your skin and determine if the procedure is right for you. When will I see results? Bear in mind that the fractional CO2 laser can be customized. Treatments can be deeper, with more healing and downtime, or shallower, with less healing time. The deeper the treatment, the better the results generally. But some patients prefer to have two treatments that aren’t as deep so they can avoid a lot of downtime. You will see some immediate results but you won’t see the full results for 1-2 months. After your skin heals, which may take up to 3-14 days, there will be a period of 2 to 4 weeks after that when your skin might be slightly pink. During this period, your skin will feel smoother and looks less blotchy. As the color returns to normal, you will see fewer lines, less blotchiness, and more glow. Is CO2 laser treatment safe? Yes, with the guidance of a skilled cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist, a CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment is perfectly safe. With the predictability of the CO2 laser, skin can be precisely ablated layer by layer to provide incredibly safe results with minimal side effects. A responsible cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist will discuss possible CO2 laser skin resurfacing complications and how they can be avoided during your recovery. Weight loss dieting and eating times by Rory Coughlan

Studys shown switching from three daily meals to six did not boost calorie-burning or fat loss. In fact, researchers concluded, eating six meals a day actually made people want to eat more. And a research review reached no conclusions about whether meal frequency helps or hurts with weightloss. Here are more tips to lose weight even faster: • Eat a high-protein breakfast. • Fruit juice. • Drink water a half hour before meals. • Choose weight loss-friendly foods. • Eat soluble fiber. • Drink coffee or tea. • Eat mostly whole, unprocessed foods. • Eat your food slowly. It takes about three hours for your body to finish digesting a meal. If you eat every two or three hours, as many experts now advise, your body will constantly be in what nutritionists call the “fed state.” This simply means that you are always in the process of digesting food. URBAN HEALTHY CO., LTD. 64/2 Moo 1 Nongprue Soi 1 Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi Tel: 038 248 079 www.313trainingstudio.com

Foods to avoid when you're trying to lose weight. • French fries and potato chips. Whole potatoes are healthy and filling, but french fries and potato chips are not. • Sugary drinks. • White bread. • Candy bars. • Most fruit juices. • Pastries, cookies and cakes. • Some types of alcohol (especially beer) • Ice cream. Trying to figure out the best time to eat can be confusing, and researchers are looking to see if there are answers. One study showed that late lunch eaters (after 3 p.m.) lose less weight than early-eaters. It also found no difference in weight loss for the timing of breakfast and dinner meals. Restricting when you eat to 6 am to 7 pm can reduce overall calorie intake by 244, according to another study. This is most likely due to the fact that you eat fewer calories due to less time spent eating. A longer overnight fast can also help with increasing fat loss as your body has time to reach a state of ketosis, which indicates that the body is using fat for energy.

All-New HONDA CR-V 7-Seater Diesel Turbo Petrol head? Not me. I am more of a Diesel aficionado. I like torque and fuel efficiency, turbo charged diesels. Those coveted German luxury sport SUV's by John K. Lindgren Porsche Cayenne and Macan Diesels, Audi Q7 TDI and BMW X3 and X5 “Torque of the Town” - these are clean, high-tech turbo diesels. Now Honda CR-V has gone diesel. Finally! Remember the old frumpy looking first generation 20 years ago? Like a boxy delivery truck (lorry) with a spare wheel sticking out at the rear. Many complained how thirsty it was the old Honda CR-V or “Compact Runabout Vehicle!” Flash forward 2017 the 5th generation totally redesigned, re-engineered all-new Honda CR-V also the best selling compact crossover in north America finally arrives in Thailand powered by a downsized i-DTEC Diesel and boasting new spacious interior, three rows, seven seats. Thailand Property Awards 2017 This year’s Thailand Property Awards once again proved to be another spectacular event with the gala dinner well attended by the country’s real estate elite. The gala dinner was sold out with more than 600 guests--another recordbreaking number. All the leading real estate agents, property developers, interior designers and architects from throughout the nation's housing, condominium, commercial and hospitality industries gathered at the Athenee Crystal Hall, Plaza Athenee Bangkok ‘A Royal Meridian’ on Friday September 15. The evening began with an entertaining reception where fine wines and appetizers were enjoyed by the influential industry figures. That was followed by a four-course dinner during which the awards presentation began. Without question these highly regarded and much soughtafter awards once again showed themselves to be the highest symbol of achievement that a

company or an individual can aspire to in Thailand’s world class real estate industry. This year’s event was hailed as an outstanding success, owing to the efforts of organizer Terry Blackburn, founder and managing director of the Asia Property Awards. In just 11 years Terry and his team have created a cuttingedge awards venue. In each of those years, in every category, more and more entries have been submitted from around the country, enhancing the competitive nature of the contest.. Blackburn reported that more than “200 developments were entered this year – up over 65 percent from 2016, and a recordbreaking number of entries were chosen. Time and again Thailand has proven to be one of the region’s real estate leaders – whether it’s the retail, hospitality, villa or luxury residential segment – as we have seen in the quality of entrants in the past 12 years. The Awards are meant to put a spotlight on the

The Eastern Seaboard Best Villa Development Award went to X2 Pattaya Oceanphere by Habitat One Co., Ltd. Vera Key, an Eastern Seaboard judge, presented the award to a proud and deserving Chanin Vanijwongse, Habitat CEO, and Sasivimol Sutthibut, COO. Then the Eastern Seaboard’s Best Affordable Condo Development Award was presented to the Dusit Group for the Dusit Grand Park condominium. Accepting the award for the second consecutive year was the surprised and excited Dusit Group CEO Jarin Changlek and her sons Paradorn Changlek and Theerathon Changlek. Special Feature Pattaya to become marine leisure hub of Asia EEC driving business and tourism in the East Coast of Thailand. 2017 Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show to showcase Thailand's marine tourism potential to the world. Boat show to generate more than 2 billion baht of trade for the marine industry. Organisers of the sixth Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show expect more than two billion baht (approx. US$60 million) of trade to be generated by the show while supporting the government's policy to make Thailand the “Marina Hub of ASEAN” and showcasing the marine leisure credentials – onshore and off – of the Gulf of Thailand. To be held 23 – 26 November at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Pattaya, the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is a key consumer boat show in the region, showcasing global boat brands and marine products to a Thai market with a growing appetite for the marine leisure lifestyle. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Pattaya welcomed approximately eight million visitors in H1 2017 with spending up 15 percent on the same period in 2016, while Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations Ranking placed Pattaya as the 20th in the world by number of visitors. “Pattaya is showing strong growth in visitor arrivals and receipts, and is central to the development of the country's Eastern Economic Corridor. Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show has an important role to play in this, being the leading platform for marine businesses to promote their products and services to a domestic and international audience. Now in its sixth year, the consumer-focussed show has earned a reputation as being a boat show for boat lovers, where people come to see and test the latest products in the industry, and has a track

record of trade,” said Dr. Tirachai Pipitsupaphol, managing director, Ocean Property. Top international yachting brands will exhibit alongside Thailand's leading marine businesses with pleasure yachts and commercial vessels ranging from under 1 million baht to superyachts priced at more than 200 million baht. New and brokerage boats, charter services, Thai boat builders, and a wide range of marine products and services will be on display over the four days. “Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show actively promotes the Gulf of Thailand with its spectacular cruising grounds and worldclass onshore facilities, and generates a direct economic gain for the marine and tourism industries in Thailand's East through trade at the show and business stimulated thereafter. This year we expect the show to exceed more than two billion baht in trade,” added Dr. Tirachai. With the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) a national government priority, Ocean Marina Yacht Club have been actively working with government departments and authorities to promote and develop the East Coast and Gulf of Thailand's marine leisure facilities. “Thailand's East Coast has huge leisure potential. The natural marine assets are relatively untouched and following changes by the Customs Department last year we are receiving more enquiries from international pleasure boats and superyachts who wish to berth themselves in Pattaya and discover the

Gulf of Thailand. We are also seeing more Thai people chartering boats for private vacations and more charter companies opening up in the Gulf region to cater to this market. In terms of day trips to nearby islands, this segment is growing rapidly – in H1 2017 18,000 people on average per month departed from Ocean Marina Yacht Club to the islands, up 60 percent year-on-year. All this bodes well for the local marine industry and provides a solid foundation for further growth of the marine leisure sector in the Gulf of Thailand,” said Scott Finsten, harbour master of Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Kicking off the Asian boat show season, more than 6,000 people are expected to visit the 20,375 sqm of onshore and in-water exhibition space at the Ocean Marina Pattaya

Boat Show. A multi-billion baht line-up of boats and businesses will be showcasing everything from small day boats to superyachts, marine products and services, luxury cars and property, and all manner of marine gadgets and water toys. Highlights include experiential activities for visitors and in-water demonstrations from Seabreacher, Jetsurf and many more, as well as free daily yacht cruises. Held from November 23 to 26, 2017 at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Pattaya, Thailand, the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is open daily from 11am to 7 pm (closing at 6 pm on Sunday) and entry is free to all. Kramer. Patterson, 43, began his Goodyear career in 2002 with roles of increasing responsibility in Latin America. He has been part of Goodyear’s North America leadership team since 2008, first as finance director, consumer, and then in 2012, as vice president, consumer operations and customer development. Companies with T Mark are required to renew their membership every three years, thus, they must keep up their standards as assessments are made every three years. “Thai products and services are already well-known in international markets. The DITP finds that T Mark is an important factor that positively influences the decision-making process of foreign buyers in purchasing products and services from Thailand as they are confident that these products and services are carefully made in Thailand with high quality.” This year, 67 companies have met the requirements to be certified with T Mark, with 20 companies from the food industry, 14 companies from the heavy industry, 12 companies from the lifestyle products industry, two companies from the fashion industry and 19 companies from other industries.

He has been president, of the North American consumer tire business since September 2014. A key architect of Goodyear’s North America consumer strategy and its focus on high-value segments, Patterson played an integral role in the turnaround of that business. He led the creation and activation of North America’s aligned distribution model, helping Goodyear become a better supplier to its customers. Delaney, 56, led Goodyear’s Asia Pacific business for the past two years. Under his guidance, that business delivered record results and increased the value of its brand. By launching award-winning tires and improving the company’s mix of product offerings, Goodyear has earned a leadership position in key emerging markets in the region. Also, Delaney expanded the footprint of Goodyear retail outlets across China and drove the company’s increased presence in rapidly growing cities in the country. Delaney joined Goodyear in August 2015, following four years

as the chief executive officer of Goodman Fielder Limited, the largest public food company in Australia and New Zealand. He has extensive leadership experience in both North America and Europe, working in sales and business development in Europe for Procter & Gamble before becoming vice president and general manager for P&G in the Middle East. For more information about Goodyear and its products, go to www.goodyear.com/ corporate.

Companies that have received the certification may put the T Mark symbol on their products and packaging to promote the image of the product to consumers both in Thailand and in other countries. T Mark members also receive privileges from the DITP such as opportunities for brand exposure in domestic and international media as well as support in business development, from joining the T Mark Festival, joining training sessions in the T Mark Training Series and joining the Road to Shanghai program that helps develop business strategies to enter the luxury market in China. The DITP established T Mark

Currently, 763 Thai companies have received T Mark, divided into two main categories: products ranging from the food and agricultural products, industrial products, lifestyle products, fashion products and other products; and services from health and beauty services, international education services and medical services.

Business News The magnificent seventh Shell celebrates its 125th anniversary celebration of Siam anniversary in Thailand Kempinski Hotel Bangkok Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok celebrated its seventh anniversary of providing unrivalled comfort and luxury to guests to a traditional Thai classical masked dance based upon Ramayana (or Ramakien Epic). The performance took place in the lavish setting of the hotel’s spacious lobby on September 27. This classical ‘Khon’ performance was formerly witnessed only at the royal court, performed by men in masks accompanied by narrators and a traditional ‘Pipphat’ ensemble playing classical Thai music on wind and percussion instruments. Hotel guests and visitors watched the performance – an episode from Ramayana Epic called Phra Ram and Thotsakan in Combat or The Royal Battle by members of the Fine Arts Department at the Ministry of Culture. This episode portrays the royal battle between Phra Ram (Rama) and his brother Pra Lak (Lakshmana) on one side and

Thotsakan (Rayana), the demon king of Krung Longka (known as Sri Lanka) on the other side. As Thotsakan sweeps aside monkey warriors he provokes Phra Ram (Rama) and Phra Lak, and challenges them to individual combat – an invitation accepted by royal brothers without hesitation. Hanuman, the white monkey, also joins in the fray on Rama’s side. The battle is pursued in earnest but, after a short while, Thotsakan withdraws and retreats into Krung Longka (Sri

Lanka) with his army of demons. “This Khon performance undoubtedly enchanted our guests and visitors as we welcomed remarkable Thai culture whilst celebrating our hotel’s seventh anniversary,” said hotel General Manager Samir Wildemann. “We are eager to share with our guests the essence of Thai culture. The traditional Thai classical masked dance symbolizes the nobility, elegance and gracefulness of that era. It was a mesmerising performance.”

Shell Thailand celebrated 125 years of operations in Thailand last week by affirming it will continue to deliver on its mission of “Making Life’s Journey Better.” Over 100 honorable guests, including senior representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Industry, together with ambassadors and leading business executives, joined Shell to commemorate this special occasion at an anniversary appreciation dinner held at the Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park.

Youth Focus GIS praised after IB review by Mark Beales Photos by Ritche Guisona The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) has praised Garden International School (GIS) following a five-year review. The review, which is a standard procedure for all IB World schools, looked at every aspect of how the IB Diploma Programme is run at GIS. This included examining the curriculum, the school's educational beliefs, its leadership, resources and the teaching and learning that takes place. The 30,000-word document, written by GIS, was sent off earlier this year and the IBO has now released its findings. They found that: 'Based on the findings included in the report, the IB has not identified any matters to be addressed.' The report also commended GIS in several areas, including how the

school promotes Thai language by offering Thai A as a subject (and discounts for students taking it) and also how the IB's learner profile is reflected in several subjects. IB Co-ordinator Mark Beales said, "It's fantastic news to have such a positive report. This confirms everything that we already believed about GIS - that we offer excellent-value education and the highest academic levels." News of the review comes

after this year's examination results, where for the secondyear running GIS students had a 100 percent pass rate in the IB Diploma. The IB Diploma is the world's leading qualification for 16 to 18 year olds. It is a challenging course that opens doors to the world's leading universities. GIS is the most experienced IB Diploma school in this part of Thailand. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.

National Jet Ski Champion at Regents by Susan Dineen As a school, we are focused on helping our students achieve the greatest academic achievements, but we also encourage them to be ambitious, believing there is no limit to what our students can achieve. One of our Year 13 students is a fantastic example of this philosophy having become a Jet Ski Champion this summer at the age of 17. She is an amazing competitor and has been a rising star in the Jet Ski world since her first competition at just 9 years old. Jet (her nickname of course!) is a Thai-born student and has been a part of our Regents International community since Early Primary. Her talent for the water sport was first put into practice when she was only six years old, when her father started to show her how to jet ski. Three years later, when she was only 9 years old, she took part in her first Jet Ski competition,

although she didn’t realise it was a competition at the time. She put in an impressive performance and walked away as the Junior Champion. This summer she competed in the Jet Ski Pro Tour 2017 Thailand Championships and turned in an exciting performance to walk away as the youngest Champion

in this competition. Now Jet has her sights firmly set on becoming Champion in the next league, Pro Am. But her ambitions go even further – her ultimate goal is to become a World Jet Ski Champion, just like her father. Susan Dineen is the director of Admissions and Marketing at Regents International.

If you have been wondering what has been going on at MIS, here is a bit of an update. First thing to mention, the children and teachers have returned after a long (but well deserved) summer holiday break. It is very nice to see everyone back again and to welcome many new faces to our school. Another thing: MIS is gr- o- w -I –N-G! A few new changes happened during the holidays. We added three new Primary Year classes, a second art class and a new Year 10! We welcome our new teachers and wish them much happiness and success here at MIS. We are anxiously awaiting the completion of our newest building which will house our extra subject classes, sometime in early 2018. Our sports teachers and coaches have already begun signing up students who would like to participate in our school’s boys’ and girls’ basketball and football teams. These teams will represent our school and compete against other international schools locally. Also, we have some new afterschool sports activities for teachers which offer a great way for them to get fit and stay in shape with various games and aerobics during the week. Music and drama classes are underway with lots of creativity and excitement planned for this term. With song writing and play rehearsal being taught, we hope to see and hear from them in the very near future! Lunchtime drama classes and an afterschool singing and acting club is offered to those students who wish to further expand their hidden talents. Some other exciting events are happening with our swim classes. There are several swimming galas scheduled throughout this

term with other international schools. Our students spend time every week improving their technique and building up their fitness so they can compete at a proper level. MIS will be hosting a swim gala on November 23, so keep this on your calendar. The Art teachers are planning many different activities for their students to help develop their skills in drawing, crafting, painting, sculpting and other techniques of art. We look forward to seeing some great pieces of artwork being displayed around our school. Last but not least, if you walk around our school you can’t help but notice all of the wonderful new green plants and fragrant flowers

that have been planted to make our surroundings as beautiful as they can be. We have our own mini tropical oasis right outside every door! There is also new, interesting and colourful playground equipment on the Primary playground. Our environment is fantastic! Well, as you can see there is so much going on in our school and this is just the beginning. We are off to a great start with great teachers and great planning. Even with all this there is so much more to come. We wish all of our students and teachers a wonderful first term and happy school year. Sandra Haeberli is a ESL Teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That

Corteguay belongs to the Revolution! It always has and always will

In his later years Lewis Gilbert, director of the 1969 big screen disappointment The Adventurers, appeared on Desert Island Discs and freely admitted this was the worst movie he had ever made. The acting and the storyline were crap, he claimed, but the music was OK. Based on a novel by Harold Robinson (or Harold Robinson if you prefer Basil Fawlty’s version in Fawlty Towers), The Adventurers came out just when censorship codes were being relaxed in the United States. Thus the movie is caught between the old and the new. In some ways it is a stilted soap opera about the crimes of the rich and the powerful, but in other ways it’s all about bums, tits and nudity. The Adventurers in other words is a mish-mash. The movie tells the story of Dax Xenos (Bekim Fehmiu) who flees the troubled South

American dictatorship if Corteguay at a young age after his mother is raped and murdered by government thugs. Vowing one day to return for revenge, Dax grows up in Italy and becomes a gigolo who goes to bed with middle aged, rich women for a handsome fee. Olivia de Havilland is one of the unlikely objects of his forced intercourse. Dax drifts from one woman to another – in a forthcoming movie remake the character is inevitably bisexual – whilst his home country of Corteguay drifts from crisis to crisis under the military autocracy of “senor presidente” general Rojo, played far too stiffly by Alan Badel. Eventually, Dax does help bring about the fall and murder of the dictator but is then promptly shot dead by the incoming president who promises to be even worse

than the last one. The acting of the often famous actors is really dreadful. Bekim Fehmiu, a new actor from Hungary, failed to impress and soon disappeared altogether from the movie circuit. Charles Aznavour unconvincingly plays a deceitful spy for general Rojo and ends up being left to starve to death in his own secret torture chamber. Ernest Borgnine seems to play his role as friend and adviser to Dax as if he is still Ragnar the Dreaded in The Vikings. Even some of the smaller parts are strangely cast. Sydney Tafler, who many will remember from his Ealing comedy successes, surprisingly turns up in The Adventurers as the head of the secret police whose job it is to kill off anyone vaguely suspected of “treason”. Presumably he was chosen for the part of colonel Guttierez because, with round glasses, Tafler does rather remind everybody of Heinrich Himmler. Corteguay is a fictitious

country and much of the film was shot in Columbia. To be fair, the rural sequences are beautifully photographed in colour which show up particularly well in the DVD version of this movie. Much of the screen fighting is done by Columbian soldiers, as actors, and they perform a convincing job. Many of them must have seen real active service in Columbia’s drugs and frontier wars. The crowd scenes are particularly well done throughout the film. The Adventurers also has a lot of unintentional comedy. One of the actresses falls off a swing during an unwanted pregnancy and the music is wholly inappropriate, resembling a Tom and Jerry chase. One of the actors finds his wife in a compromising position with another woman and exclaims, “Well, we have something in common at least!” without apparently appreciating either the humour or the ambiguity in the remark.

In spite of everything, the basic political message of The Adventurers has stood the test of time: the reality that as one military dictator follows another in coup and violence

ridden societies, the next one tends to be worse than the last. In view of the 2011 Arab Spring, we might all do well to remember that truism.

Popular Conspiracy Theories Elvis Wanted Dead or Alive!

If Elvis were still alive he’d be in his late 70s now. Of course, there are many reasons to believe the singing sensation is dead. But what of the opinion of many thousands today that the corpse in the coffin in 1977 was not actually the King after all? For starters, they say, the middle name of Elvis is spelt wrongly on the grave: his middle name was Aron but the tombstone transcribed it Aaron. His father would surely never have allowed this to happen. When Elvis’ name was misspelled on the birth certificate, dad went to enormous lengths to have it changed. Surely the family would never have allowed such a crass mistake after the death of their loved one. As is well known, Elvis gained a great deal of weight in his final years thanks to a diet of junk food. At his death he was around 250 pounds, yet the death certificate lists him as a reasonable 170 pounds. Something odd here, especially as the original death certificate disappeared and the

surviving one is dated two months after his so-called fatal heart attack. Then again, why did Elvis’ coffin weigh 900 pounds? He can’t have been that big. Attendants at the funeral reported that the air around the coffin was decidedly cool so maybe they were carrying a hidden air conditioning unit to keep the body from decomposing. Except that it wasn’t a body at all but a wax model. After all many people who inspected the open casket said he looked rather waxy. Not to mention that his hands looked soft and pudgy whereas the real Elvis was an eighthdegree black-belt whose fingers and palms were rough with calluses. Anyway, the funeral was scarcely over before a man looking very like Elvis boarded a plane for Buenos Aires, paid in cash, and using the name John Burrows. But wait a moment. John Burrows was the name Elvis used as an alias several times. And why did the Elvis’ treasured books – the bible and Chiro’s book of num-

bers amongst them – never show up again? Perhaps he took them as hand-luggage on the plane. The day after Elvis’ presumed death, a woman named Lucy de Barbon and a former lover, received a single rose in the mail. The card indicated that the flower was sent from “El Lancelot” which had been her pet name for Elvis and one which nobody else knew. Since flowers can’t be sent from beyond the grave, the implications are obvious you might think. Elvis wasn’t dead but did not want to be found. Elvis had many reasons to fake his own death. He had recently lost millions of dollars in a real estate deal with a California-based organization, The Fraternity, with links to the mafia. In addition, the King was a prisoner of his own fame. Sometimes, when he wanted to leave Graceland, he would send out look-alikes to distract his followers. He was even known to ride in the trunk of someone’s car to avoid detection. Everywhere he went he was overwhelmed by fans. At the time of his death, Elvis was nearing the end of his career. He was 42 and his hair was beginning to go gray. He was grossly overweight and his voice was starting to weaken. The King would never want his fans to see him in such an unhealthy condition over time. Additionally he knew how to fake his own death as he was a pharmaceutical expert, knowing which drugs to administer to create a deathlike state. There were rumours at the time that mortuary staff had been paid a higher fee than was usual. Had they been bought off? Then there are the sightings – thousands of them over the years from Seattle to Singapore and all points between and beyond. There is even a photo of him taken in the Royal Cliff Hotel, near Pattaya, in 1983, although it’s true that Elvis has his back to the camera. Surely all these people can’t be wrong. It seems that Elvis Presley is worth more dead than alive. By faking his own death and relocating with a new identity, he is safe from his fans and the mafia whilst Graceland can reap immense financial benefits from all that attention. Meanwhile Elvis is known – absolutely and definitely – to be a regular at McDonald's near Walking Street. And with double fries please!

much of the time, nobody of consequence trusts you. This is why you are interviewed in the supervisor’s office every time you approach the immigration desk at Bangkok airport. Don’t believe the rumour that you will soon be going on a long journey. In fact, it’s only a few kilometers to the local crematorium. Pisces (Feb 23 – Mar 22) True, you are brimming with self-confidence but the downside is that you think everyone else is a complete dickhead. This explains why you are never invited to parties and why most people won’t sit next to you in a baht bus. All the heavenly signs agree that most Pisces are, and will always be, complete burks. Aries (Mar23 – Apr 22) You have a wild imagination and think everyone is following you with an axe which is stupid. The only time it happened was when you walked out of an Indian restaurant without paying the bill. Your finances are suspect and don’t be surprised if you are refused admittance to the better supermarkets in town. Taurus (Apr 23 – May 22) Apart from being bullheaded, you are a hopeless drunk like most people born under this particular animal. This condition has caused you to neglect personal hygiene to the extent that most laundries reject your business or add a stiff surcharge. You need to note that seven alcohol units a week does not mean seven large bottles of imported Scotch. Gemini (May 23 – June 22) You are popular only because you are a bisexual with a big bank balance. You are inclined to expect too much for too little which results in your being regarded as a Cheap Charlie. Geminis are notorious for hoarding pornography and continually changing their personal computer password. Cancer (June 23 – July 22) You are sympathetic to other people’s problems which is why you are a sucker who has lost all the money you brought to this country. If Pattaya had a welfare fund for foreigners, you would certainly be a prime candidate. As it is, and just like other Cancer persons, you will likely spend much of your later life in prison.

yourself to be a born leader, others think you are an idiot. This is why there is always a poor attendance at the expatriate society when you are the guest speaker. Your arrogance is absolutely disgusting and, to cap it all, you are a thieving soand-so. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) You are a complete cheapskate who looks for balloons outside a bar since you suspect there will be a free buffet on offer. Most Virgos came to Pattaya to find non expensive sex although they usually claim to be interested in temples and elephants. Virgos make excellent pimps. Libra (Sep 23 – Oct 22) You are the artistic type who spends a lot of time on Thepprasit Road. You are looking for people who can debate the Renaissance era with you. In other words, your chances of ever being employed or having any serious cash are zero. Be careful if you are a woman as most Libras are whores. Scorpio (Oct 23 – Nov 22) You are the worst of the lot, self centred, clever but totally untrustworthy. Nobody would ever let you borrow their condo ownership papers even for a moment and for obvious reasons. You wanted to be a lawyer but failed your exams. The chances of Scorpios being murdered are higher than average. Sagittarius (Nov 23 – Dec 22) Because you believe that life is a complete lottery, you have a reckless tendency to rely on luck rather than on common sense. Your chances of being involved in a serious road accident are much higher than average, especially as Sagittarians are well known as hopeless drunks. Capricorn (Dec 23 – Jan 22) You are a total failure in every respect and came to Pattaya to be with others of your goatish kind. You are incapable of the simplest operations and invariably cause an area power outage when you try to change a bulb. The stars are unanimous that you should commit suicide and save us all a great deal of inconvenience during the current hot weather.

Bunker boys golf Than City G.C. Our golf tour of Bangkok kicked off on a bright note at the beautiful Thana City course just 30 minutes drive from downtown Bangkok. Opened in 1993, this is the only Greg Norman designed course in Thailand. Par 72, 7,000 and eight yards, the course is set in beautifully landscaped surrounds and provides a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Most holes have water in play somewhere and add to the challenge and the intimidation factor. The clubhouse and facilities although undergoing major renovations, were top class and staff and caddies were professional as expected from a course of this standard. As always there were some things whinge about; the greens had recently been heavily sanded and were variable in speed, a late arriving three ball was put out on the tenth tee in front of our lead group and slowed play a little, and planes constantly taking off from nearby Suvarnabhumi were a bit of a distraction. Whilst the course is at least 15 minutes extra travel time from Pattaya than Bangkapong or Royal Lakeside, it is certainly worth consideration for inclusion on the Pattaya playing roster especially at sports day rates. The star of today’s round was Neil Carter, but Jimmy Carr was afflicted by a serious bout of a peculiar South African disease, (i. e.) getting lost and a full four hours later Jimmy was still trying to complete a 30 minute trip. Results: 1st - Neil Carter (12) 37 points 2nd - Alan Sullivan (15) 32 points 3rd - Les Cobban (7) 29 points Near pins: Les Hall, Alan Sullivan, Jimmy Carr Lam Luk Ka The second day of our Bangkok golfing adventure was at the beautiful Lam Luk Ka Country Club. We were allocated the A/B East (Championship Course). This is a course not for the faint-hearted, there was water on every hole so straight shooting was at a premium. At 6,635 yards off the yellow tees and well watered, the course played to its full length, even our longest hitters struggled to hit the par fours in regulation, so anyone planning to play this course needs to bring their A game. On reflection, we may have had much more success off the white tees as in many cases the yellow and blue tees were in the same place. Our round started off slowly with a five ball group at the front of the queue. They seemed to have little understanding of the etiquette of golf, and no consideration for anyone else and held up the whole course for six holes until the marshal intervened and removed them to another part of the course. Thereafter play was at normal speed and far more enjoyable. It’s fair to say that nobody covered themselves in glory today, scoring was on the very low side with only two players breaking 30 points. At the end of the round, Neil Carter and Michael Brett were locked together on 31 points and had to be separated by countback, the latter taking the spoils with the better closing holes. One notable incident occurred on the second fairway when a crow swooped down, picked up Neil Carter’s ball in its beak and flew away with it, seen many times on YouTube but never in real life. The golf course looked at first glance to be a fairly easy open course, but how wrong can first impressions be. Only two holes were without a water hazard, bunkers were very strategically placed and numerous and even off the white tees the course was long with several parr fours in excess of 400 yards. Scoring was difficult with no one managing to return a decent score. Les Cobban after a shocker on the previous day returned to form and looked like posting a decent score only to fall away still coming in first with 32 points.

Local Sports John Davis wins on a rainy day at Emerald Emerald – St Emerald, not a course we visit often, but an interesting and challenging layout. This is only the second visit for the group this year and with recent reports of green maintenance going on, we set off with questions in mind of what we would find. However with the very good rate in effect for green fee, caddie, and cart, it seemed worth the trip no matter what. After all, the courses do have to perform the maintenance or there would be complaints about that and, with some rain and warm sunshine, greens can recover quickly. Arrival and check-in were smooth and we were soon off under cloudy skies with no groups in front or waiting to follow. As we worked our way around the front

nine there were no signs of greens maintenance and they were rolling true, at a good speed, but typically “quick” if putting down a slope. After the turn, the skies darkened and the drizzle started, turning into a steady, drenching rain, stopping play as our last group arrived at the 14th tee. Sheltered there under a small hut, they watched the group in front play out the long, uphill par 5 and head off to the 15th tee. After a wait of 45 minutes or so, the rain returned to the drizzle stage and off the last group went finding the fairways wet but playable and the greens a bit slower but without standing water. All good. However, when all finished and the scorecards collected, it was learned that five of the group had packed it in and headed

Winner with one of BJ’s finest to the clubhouse during the rain. One of them had a very good round going and most likely would have been on the podium had he completed the round. Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees For whatever reason, the traffic was very calm today and our little Monday excursion to the Barcelona Valley complex was a seamless 30 minutes in the van. Khun Dave Ferris is the D.O.G. all this week and with this lot, he has his hands full. Green Valley is back in the great shape is used to be. The recent rains have improved the turf considerably and the fairways are pretty much patch free these days. The greens were outstanding. If you had seen this course two months ago, you would be amazed, but things grow quickly in Thailand! Never mind, off we went for another adventure smackin’ that little white ball around the jungle. Treasure Hill is a bitch of a track. It’s a Tom Jones kind of golf course, and blobbing the first two holes here is not unusual. We did manage to have a special (no extra charge) entertainer in the van as Jimmy Brackett was in fine early morning form and had them rolling in the aisles. They should have had their seatbelts on. Stuvik grabs his first pole position and 4th place in Shanghai! The fifth round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the Shanghai F1 Circuit which lies on the outskirts of the bustling metropolis. Thai driver Sandy Stuvik would have a new teammate for the weekend in Yuki Nemoto. The young Japanese rising star has had numerous successes in the European Super Trofeo Championship. Friday's practice sessions were contested in dry conditions. As part of the team strategy for the weekend, no new tires were used, instead saving them for possible use on Saturday's official practice. Saturday morning saw a wet official practice session, with Sandy leading most of the session, only to be pipped to third during the closing stages. Less than one-tenth of a second separated the top 3. Up next was the first qualifying session, again in wet conditions. Sandy was confident to improve on his official practice time. The Thai driver went on to do exactly that and managed to secure his first pole position in the Blancpain GT Series Asia! Yuki Nemoto carried on in fine form in the second qualifying session, taking a well-earned 11th position in his first-ever GT3, qualifying with difficult conditions. The rain, however did not continue to fall after the qualification sessions and the track began to slowly dry up before race 1. The discussion in the teams was whether to opt for slicks or wets in the damp conditions, with Sandy choosing to go for slicks, like most of the rest of the grid. With Sandy leading the pack, race 1 got underway and the Thai driver fell from the lead, seceding three positions to cars on the initially grippier wet tires. The safety car was despatched due to a turn-1

incident, but the race quickly got underway again. With the slicks beginning to heat up, Sandy started making up ground and was back in the lead. The Thai driver would stay in the lead until his pit-stop window opened and he was able to give the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 over to Yuki Nemoto, who managed to keep the lead after the pit-stop window thanks to a string of fantastic laps. Unfortunately, the Thai driver was given a drivethrough penalty for his battling in the first lap, and with that served, the pair dropped to 4th place, where they would finish. Race 2 on Sunday was wet, this seemed ideal for Sandy as

he qualified his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 on pole just one day before on similar slippery conditions. However as the race unfolded the Thai driver did not find the edge he had in his previous sessions. Sandy finished the race in ninth place. The final round will take place on October 21 and 22, at the all-new Zhejiang circuit, around four hours inland from Shanghai. Sandy Stuvik is honored to be supported by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Thai Airways, Thaiwings Travel Agency, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand.

You & Your Pets

Dueling Duos If you have more than one cat, you may already realize that cats are very territorial creatures and often vehemently defend their turf. Even cats that have gotten along in the past may eventually take a dislike to one another. You must be the mediator. Creating peace in a home with more than one pet may require some

work, but be patient and consider the following tips on getting them to at least tolerate one another—and maybe even your dog. Most importantly, have all your cats spayed or neutered. Beyond that, provide enough resources for each animal including one litter box for each cat, separate food and water dishes for each, ample resting places

and perches, and a variety of hiding spaces. Give every cat individual attention every day. Play with each of them and make things interesting to reduce their stress. When they are getting along, reward them with treats that they enjoy. Keep a bag of treats handy so you can reward them when you witness good behavior. Play with both (or all three) cats at the same time, using separate toys if necessary, so that they begin to associate play time with each other. The best types of toys are fishing rods with feathers attached to a long string. This toy is also very useful when you need to distract and redirect one or both cats because they've begun showing signs of hostility toward each other. If the animals usually are aggressive, do not allow them to be together unless you can monitor them. Do not leave them unsupervised until you are certain that they are not a threat to each other.

Some tips to help provide for your pet’s well being.

Pet Pampering

You may love to pamper your pet with tasty treats, but do it thoughtfully with your pet’s health in mind. What's more natural than sharing a tidbit or two from your dinner plate? No problem. A nibble of chicken or steak is usually fine. But go easy with giving pets people food instead of a well-balanced pet food. Quality products designed for dogs and cats contain the nutrients your pet needs for good health, and should make up 90 percent of your pet's daily calories. Overfeeding can lead to lifethreatening obesity. Vets advise limiting treats to 10 percent of your pet's total daily calories. The number of required calories depends on the pet’s weight, age, and activity level.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Celia and Wilson

This lovely mum and son combination were rescued from our local temple. Celia had 3 kittens 2 of which have already been re-homed, leaving just this little black and white rascal Wilson. This "Purrfect pair" would love to go to a new home together if possible.

Mr.Tibbs

This friendly handsome boy has been with us for a few years now, he just loves playing in the garden and is a good cat for catching vermin. He would love to go to a new home where he could be the centre of attention, but could also be a good friend for your lonely puss.

Temple kitten 1

This lovely kitten was born here just 6 weeks ago: we found her mum at our local temple. She was heavily pregnant. Just a few days later she gave birth to 5 beautiful babies. This one is called Moley and has many lovely colours.

For example, a small 10-pound dog may only need 290 to 450 calories a day. By all means pamper your little pal, but limit treats to 29-45 calories. Ask your vet about your pet's dietary needs. And beware: some treats can weigh in at more than 75 calories each!

Temple kitten 2

This next lovely kitten is an unusual ginger girl as most ginger cats are boys. Just like her sister above, she is lively, friendly and very naughty as most kittens are. It would be nice to re-home her with one of her brothers and sisters.

Going to the Dogs... “A well trained dog will make no attempt to share your lunch. He will just make you feel so guilty that you cannot enjoy it.” ~ Helen Thomson

Fleas can jump 350 times their body length. Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards. Crocodiles cannot stick their tongue out.

Cat Corner Adoption Option

Thinking of sharing your home and life with a cat? If so, think adoption rather than buying a kitten from a pet mill. But keep in mind that while cats are independent by nature, they nevertheless require much of your time and attention. Before you adopt, make sure that your lifestyle can make room for a feline. How busy are you? How much time do you spend at home? How nurturing and playful are you? Answers to those questions will dictate whether and what kind of cat you should get. Very busy people, for example, may not have the time to properly care for a cat, particularly highly intelligent and active breeds. Think carefully and do your research.
