2015-16 OUTLOOK

Patriot Women open with young faces and new instruction The The Francis Marion University women’s basketball team will open its 2015-16 season under the direction of firstyear head coach Jeri Porter on Friday (Nov. 13) at 2 p.m. against Erskine College in the Peach Belt Conference-Conference Carolinas Challenge in Dahlonega, Ga. The two-day event is being hosted by the University of North Georgia and will be held in the Nighthawks’ 1,025-seat Memorial Hall. On Saturday, the Patriots will take on North Greenville University at noon. Porter welcomes back five letterwinners – four of whom were starters – from last year’s 8-20 squad that suffered eight losses by six points or less. On that team, freshmen accounted for 56 percent of the offense. Porter owns more than 200 career coaching wins during a career that has seen her patrol the sidelines at both the Division I and II levels. Her initial FMU squad will consist of two seniors, two juniors, four sophomores, and four freshmen.

game tells you what areas you need to improve upon. “This group has shown good chemistry, and I like the fact they can play well together. The ‘buy-in’ factor that every new coach must strive to instill has also been good with this unit. “As far as team leadership, the positive of being an entirely new staff is that all players are new to us and therefore there is no pressure on any returnees. Point guards are key to leadership because they have the ball in their hands, and seniors are always looked to by freshmen. Leaders can be developed and we have communicated this to our seniors, and we follow that by saying it is OK to have different styles of leadership. We want them to understand that role.”

The returning starters include senior 5-6 guard Camille Dash (6.3 ppg, 2.9 apg), senior 5-11 forward Alaysia Watts (6.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg), sophomore 5-10 guard Khayani Chandler (10.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg), and sophomore 5-8 forward Briana Burgins (7.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg). Also back is sophomore 6-0 forward Courtney Wood (4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg), who appeared in 25 contests and did make five starts as a freshman. Three newcomers arrive with previous collegiate experience. Junior 5-5 point guard TeTe Flowers (15.9 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and junior 5-7 guard Victoria Dye (11.3 ppg, 5.8 rpg) both come to FMU from Volunteer State Community College in Tennessee. The Patriots also gain the services of sophomore 5-10 guard-forward Kristin Tines, who transfers from Cloud County Community College in Kansas. The freshmen class consists of four Palmetto State products: 5-9 forward Lauryn Bush from Hilton Head High School, 5-8 guard Brooke Dixon from Camden High School, 5-10 forward Shaunice Fulmore from Lake City High School, and 6-2 center Kacey Medlin from Florence Christian School. “I feel really good about the effort and the work these young ladies have put in during the pre-season,” Porter said. “We are ready to play somebody so we can see where we stand, and not stand pat in where we think we are. Every opening

One, we have stressed that we want to play a certain way and everything in the pre-season has been predicated toward that goal.” Porter talked of an 8-to-9 player rotation that likely would have Flowers and Dash starting in the backcourt with Dye, Burgins, and Watts along the frontline. “I believe that our four upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) can provide scoring, but we need to get them the ball in the right spots. Not that she wouldn’t ever start, but right now I like Fulmore in a ‘sixth-starter’ role because she can do so many things offensively.” Francis Marion has an all-time mark of 28-14 in season openers. The Patriots lead the all-time series against Erskine 22-2, although the Flying Fleet captured last year’s season-opener by a 75-59 decision. FMU defeated North Greenville 6160 in last season’s challenge, the firstever meeting between the two programs since NGU moved to four-year status. FMU’s opening three games will be on the road, including a Nov. 18 tilt at Division I UNC Greensboro, prior to the Patriots’ home opener against Pfeiffer University on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Smith University Center. This year’s slate includes 14 home contests.

“The strength of this team should be our defense. The players understand that good defense makes offense easier. The emphasis on defense will also hopefully take some pressure off the players at the offensive end, and help us relax. We have talked about getting to the free throw line – especially given that all trips will be two shots with the new rule change – and in turn not fouling on the defensive end. In two scrimmages, we played eight quarters without allowing our opponents to reach the penalty. “We also practice turning defensive in offense. If we can defend, we can be competitive every night. We need to also commit to being a good rebounding team. If we want to run, we need to control the defensive boards. “Our conditioning has been good. From Day

In the team’s 42-year history, FMU has totaled 811 all-time victories and twentytwo 20-win seasons – and stands 11th among all Division II programs in total wins. The Patriots advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011, but since then FMU is looking for its first winning campaign. FMU is 68-5 in its last 73 games (over 15 seasons) when scoring 85 points or more.

2015-16 HEAD COACH JERI PORTER 1st year at FMU She was named the head coach at Radford in 2002 and led the Highlanders to 93 wins in six seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and two second-place finishes in the Big South Conference. Her 2007-08 squad was 23-12 and earned a WNIT invitation.

Jeri Porter begins her first season as head coach of the Francis Marion University women's basketball program. Porter was named to the position on May 11. She has 15 years experience as a collegiate head coach – 11 at the NCAA Division I level and four at the Division II level – and has recorded 208 wins. She comes to Florence after spending the 2014-15 season at Georgia State University as an assistant on the Panthers’ staff. Porter’s first head coaching position was at Division II University of North Alabama, where she posted three winning marks in four seasons, including a 21-7 record in 1999-2000. That squad captured the Gulf South Conference East Division title, while Porter garnered conference Coach of the Year recognition.

In 2008, she accepted the head coaching position at George Mason University, where she remained until 2013. Porter increased the Patriots’ win total over her first four seasons (from four to 15 wins). During her time in Fairfax, she also created and directed the Jeri Porter Girls’ Basketball Camps. Her final two squads posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.09. Porter is a 1991 graduate of Liberty University, where she earned a B.S. degree in psychology. She garnered first-team All-Big South Conference honors as a senior and was twice named her squad’s most valuable player. She was inducted into the university’s Lady Flames Hall of Fame in 1998. She began her coaching career at her alma mater serving as an assistant coach for six seasons, during which time the Lady Flames won two conference tournament championships and advanced to the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Tournaments. FMU HALL OF FAME CAGER PEARL MOORE (1975-79) Pearl Moore, women’s basketball’s all-time scoring leader, is a 1979 Francis Marion University graduate. Moore, a native of Florence and a graduate of Wilson High School, played for the Patriots between 1975 and 1979, and the four-time All-American scored 4,061 career points. Moore started her collegiate career at Anderson Junior College in the fall of 1975. After one semester at Anderson (eight games and 177 points), she transferred to Francis Marion. Fortunately, the Patriots did not open their cage season until after the first of the year, and thus Moore played the entire 1975-76 Francis Marion schedule. At that time under Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) rules, a player could transfer and be eligible immediately. The 5-7 guard-forward went on to score 3,884 points in a Patriot uniform. Her career point total includes the points scored at Anderson, because at that time in women’s basketball, two- and four-year schools regularly competed against each other and all results counted. During her junior year, she scored a then single-game record 60 points in a 114-71 victory over Eastern Washington State College in the 1978 AIAW Small College National Tournament (see lower left photo). In her final collegiate game, March 10, 1979, an AIAW Small College Regional Tournament consolation game against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she tallied 42 points to break the previous all-time record of 4,045 set by Travis Grant of Kentucky State University. Moore averaged 30.6 points per game over her four seasons (127 games) at Francis Marion, and helped lead head coach Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell’s program to an 85-42 record and three national tournament appearances. She scored below 20 points only 18 times in her Francis Marion career, and reached the 50-point mark on three occasions. She scored 1,109 points in her junior year alone. In addition to her point total, recorded in an era that did not have the three-point field goal, Moore grabbed 1,270 rebounds and shot 45.9 percent from the field and a then school-record 70.0 percent from the free-throw line. Since that time, two male players (John Pierce and Philip Hutcheson, both of David Lipscomb University) have surpassed her total, but she still stands as the only female player to reach 4,000 career points. Miriam Walker-Samuels of Claflin College (SC) is second on the women’s scoring list with 3,855 points. Following her career at Francis Marion, Pearl went on to play two seasons in the Women’s Pro Basketball League (1979-80 with the New York Stars and 1980-81 with the St. Louis Streak), earning All-Star status in 1981, and one season in Venezuela. Moore was one of the first inductees into the FMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1994, she was nominated by the university for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and her name remains in the nomination process. During the summer of 1996, several items from Pearl’s playing days were sent to the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., for inclusion in the Women’s Basketball Exhibit Area. In 2000, she was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2008 became a member of the Florence Area Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2011, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.

WHERE THEY STAY (FMU CAMPUS HOUSING) Living on campus is a once in a lifetime experience, and campus life is the best way to fully immerse yourself into life as a college student. FMU works hard to make sure the residence halls and apartments are an inviting and comfortable place to live and learn. Francis Marion University offers a progressive residence life program, offering both residence halls and apartment buildings. Freshmen live in the residence halls. The new Forest Villas complex provides an additional housing option for upperclassmen. FMU campus life promotes academic sucess in a safe, attractive, modern and well-maintained environment. All facilities have air-conditioning, telephone, cable TV, and Internet connections. Each room is equipped with a smoke/fire detector. Student Housing consists of the Forest Villas Apartments (top and bottom photos), Resident Halls, and the Village Apartments. The Housing Office Complex includes a Tutoring Center/Study Hall and provides such services as mail delivery, equipment check out, package acceptance, and an information desk. Call the FMU Student Housing Office at 843-661-1130.

WHERE THEY PLAY (SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTER) FMU’S SMITH UNIVERSITY CENTER Named in honor of the university’s first president, Dr. Walter D. Smith, the Smith University Center provides comprehensive facilities for student services and activities as well as for recreation and athletic programs to serve students, faculty, and staff. Opened in 1974, the center’s gymnasium orginally seated 3,027 for basketball, but with recent renovations that include new theatrestyle seats, a new hardwood floor, new scoreboards, a new lighting and sound system, and a new paint job it now seats 2,547. The Patriot Women have compiled a 428-137 (.758) mark in the Smith University Center, including a 190-69 run in the past 259 games. The FMU men’s basketball team owns a 330-206 (.616) record in the building. In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises. Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament, and in 1988, the U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team played an exhibition game against the Cuban National Team. In 1998, 1999, and 2008, FMU hosted the NCAA Division II women’s basketball South Atlantic Regional Tournament.

FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Where the Swamp Fox Lives.................

Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, prides itself on providing a strong liberal arts education. Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for using the South Carolina terrain to outfox the British, the University enrolls more than 4,000 students. The University offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select number of graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businesses and industries of the Pee Dee region. Francis Marion is the only state university serving the Pee Dee region, and many of its students are the first in their families to go to college. The campus features modern classroom buildings, laboratories and residence facilities to provide a safe, comfortable learning environment for students. The campus also features a number of recreational facilities that are available for use by students, faculty, staff and alumni, and for use in intramural and intercollegiate athletic competition. Most buildings have been constructed or renovated since 1970. Facilities are equipped with ramps, and those of more than one story are equipped with elevators. Though each building has its own unique design, all are planned for architectural harmony. The campus facilities include: Wallace House (President’s Home), J. Howard Stokes Administration Building (above photo), Office Services Building, Facilities Management/Campus Police Building, Walter Douglas Smith University Center, The Edward S. Ervin III Dining Hall, John K. Cauthen Educational Media Center, Founders Hall, Peter D. Hyman Fine Arts Center, Hugh K. Leatherman Sr. Science Facility (bottom right photo), Frank B. Lee Nursing Building (top left photo), Robert E. McNair Science Building, The Observatory, James A. Rogers Library, Thomas C.
