FMU is named in honor of South Carolina’s Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox,” for using the terrain to out-fox the British. Located about seven miles east of Florence, in the beautiful northeast section of South Carolina, the 400-acre campus is about 90 miles from the state capital of Columbia, 60 miles from the shores of Myrtle Beach, and 180 miles from the mountains of the Carolinas.

Francis Marion University placed 87 student athletes, including 12 volleyball players, on last year’s Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), nearly half of all our student athletes. FMU also placed 10 vb student-athletes on the FMU 2015 fall Swamp Fox Athletic- Academic Honor Roll, and eight on the 2016 spring honor roll.

Francis Marion University 2016 Coaching Staff Paul MacDonald - FMU Volleyball Coach Paul MacDonald, 43, is entering his 11th year as the head coach for the Francis Marion University women's volleyball program. He owns a 213-196 career coaching mark in 13 seasons, including a 164-147 record in his 10 years at Francis Marion. In his time on the Patriot sidelines, his teams have produced 13 All-Conference selections. Last year, the Patriots posted a 16-14 record, nearly doubling the win total from the previous season, while placing sixth during the PBC regular season. Two Patriots earned All-Conference recognition and two were placed on the PBC All-Academic squad. The program also garnered AVCA All-Academic Team recognition for the fourth time in seven seasons. FMU was one of only 19 programs nationwide to earn the honor while also reaching its Dig Pink fundraising goal. In 2014, MacDonald's charges posted a 9-20 mark. The squad ranked 46th nationally in service aces per set (1.73) and 76th in total aces served (176), and two players were named to the PBC All-Academic Team. In 2013, he directed FMU to a 21-9 overall record and the program's highest Peach Belt Conference win total (12-6 mark) in 15 seasons. The Patriots placed third during the PBC regular season and MacDonald was named the conference "Coach of the Year" for the second time. Three team members earned All-Conference honors (one All-Region selection) and three picked up PBC All-Academic Team recognition. FMU ranked among the top 45 percent of all Division II programs in every one of the seven national team stats categories. Heading those accomplishments was the Patriots ranking 43rd nationally in service aces per set (1.74), 52nd in won-loss percentage (.700), and 87th in assists per set (11.66). In 2012, MacDonald guided a relatively young Patriot squad to an 18-12 overall record. The Patriots earned a fourth-place finish in the Peach Belt standings and narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Four team members also earned PBC All-Academic Team recognition. In 2011, the Patriots finished with a 12-18 record. Six team members earned Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team recognition. Francis Marion earned an AVCA Team Academic Award (for the third straight year) -- one of only three PBC schools to gain that honor for 2011. In 2010, FMU posted a 15-16 mark with a pair of Patriots earning All-Conference honors and two gaining PBC All-Academic recognition. The Patriot squad earned an AVCA Team Academic Award (for the second year in a row) -- one of only four PBC schools to gain that honor for 2010. In 2008, MacDonald earned PBC "Coach of the Year" honors while guiding the Patriots to a 23-9 record and the program's third-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament invitation. FMU placed second during the PBC regular-season and advanced to the title match of the PBC Tournament. In 2007, FMU was 13-21 and placed fourth during the Peach Belt regular season. In a very successful first campaign (2006), MacDonald guided the Patriots to a 26-8 record and a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship. MacDonald came to FMU from Mount Mercy College, an NAIA school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In three seasons directing the Mustang program, he compiled a 49-49 record, including a 25-11 mark in 2005 - the team's best record in more than a decade. Utilizing a roster that did not include any seniors, he also guided Mount Mercy to a second-place finish in the Midwest Classic Conference with a 6-1 record and to a spot in the NAIA Region VII Tournament for the first time since 2002. For that effort, he received conference "Coach of the Year" honors. A native of Flat Rock, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, he earned a B.A. degree in business from Michigan State University and an M.Ed. degree in physical education from Wayne State University. He earned CAP I certification through the USA Volleyball Coaches' Accreditation Program in 2007. Prior to accepting the position at Mount Mercy, he was an assistant coach at Division II Wayne State for the 2002 season, an assistant coach at Macomb County Community College for the 2001 campaign, and was an assistant and interim head coach during the 1999 season at Division I Oakland University. MacDonald spent five years (2004-2008) with the USA National Olympic Development Program. He has five years of experience coaching at the high school level - including winning a district championship at Regina High School in Harper Woods, Mich. - and seven years of experience coaching at the Junior Olympics and club level. His Junior Olympic squads placed first in the state of Michigan in 1998 and third in 2002. He is a member of the United States Volleyball Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He has worked camps at the universities of Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin; Michigan State University; Stanford University, Purdue University; Eastern Michigan University; Mount Mercy; and at high schools in Michigan. He was a coach for the 2006 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Charlotte, N.C., the 2007 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Davidson, N.C., and the 2008 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Baltimore, Md. He directs the FMU Patriot Volleyball Summer Camp programs and the Florence Juniors Volleyball Club. MacDonald was married in the summer of 2012.

FMU 2016 Volleyball Outlook The Francis Marion University women’s volleyball team will open its 2016 season by playing four matches this weekend, Sept. 2-3, at the Queens University of Charlotte Volleyball Fall Invitational. On Friday, the Patriots will face Queens at 12:45 p.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne University at 5:15 p.m. FMU will conclude its tournament play on Saturday by taking on Belmont Abbey College at 10:30 a.m. and Catawba College at 5:15 p.m. Following this weekend's play, Francis Marion will return home to host its annual FMU Invitational Tournament on Sept. 9-10 in the Smith University Center. FMU head coach Paul MacDonald welcomes back six letterwinners, including four starters and the libero, from last year's 16-14 squad that finished sixth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season and nearly doubled its win total from the 2014 campaign. The Patriots were tops in the PBC and ranked 19th nationally in aces per set (1.90) and 18th nationally in total service aces (224). In 10 seasons at FMU, MacDonald is the winningest coach in program history with 164 victories, while his career mark stands at 213-196. Returning starters include 2016 PBC pre-season All-Conference and 6-2 senior middleblocker Caroline Boone, 6-1 senior hitter Carlie Smith, and 5-9 sophomore hitter Georgia Garrison. Last season, Boone played in every set for the Patriots and ranked among the conference’s Top 25 in 17 different statistical categories. Boone ranked third in the PBC and 46th nationally in total blocks (123) and fourth in hitting percentage (.300). She earned All-Conference accolades for both her play on the court and her work in the classroom, and was an honorable mention All-Region pick in 2015. Smith appeared in all 30 of the Patriots’ matches last season and averaged 2.36 kills per set and 2.00 digs per set. Garrison had a stellar freshman campaign, ranking second in the PBC and 49th nationally in aces per set (0.43) and a conference-best 51 total service aces. Also returning are 5-8 sophomore setter Carrie McGinnis (who started 22 times a year ago), 5-9 junior libero Shelbi Meek, and 5-10 sophomore hitter Chloe Attram. McGinnis will look to be the primary setter for the Patriots in 2016 after splitting time at the position last season. McGinnis ranked 12th in the PBC in assists per set (4.92) and 11th in total assists (580). Meek will once again handle the libero duties for FMU after ranking fifth in the PBC in digs per set (4.62) and fourth in total digs (545) a season ago. The team's recruiting class includes one transfer in junior hitter Erika Hartings (Coldwater, Ohio); freshmen middleblockers Megan Dash (Bethany, Ill.), Lenee’ Blot (Miami, Fla.), and Alanna Anon (Hialeah, Fla.); freshman defensive specialist Natalie Vaughn (Newport News, Va.); freshman defensive specialist and outside hitter Felicia Kessler (Moreno Valley, Calif.); and freshman setter Kaitlyn Ziegelmaier (Naples, Fla.). "The Queens Invitational will be a really good gauge to see what we need to do early on to be successful in 2016," said MacDonald. "We will be seeing four very good teams. The connection between our freshmen and returning players will be huge, so miscommunication must stay at a minimum. I have been most pleased with the connection that has continued to grow between our hitters and our setters. Carrie has a year with the program under her belt and with Kaitlyn getting more comfortable, we are ready to see all of the pieces work together throughout the season.” "Caroline will be our anchor when it comes to blocking and our middle attack. Coming off a solid junior season, she is doing a phenomenal job of leading the squad and helping the newcomers to transition. Carlie had a really good season after dealing with some injuries. She possesses the knowledge of our system, and has shown an understanding of how the system can make any player better.” “Shelbi will be an extremely steading force for us on the court. It’s nice to know what you’re going to get from her, and that’s an exceptionally high-level of play on every single point. She does a really good job of shaking off a bad play. She really helps to show the rest of the team that you can work past mistakes and that leads to a higher level of play from everyone else on the court.” "The addition of Erika into the program gives us another offensive threat. It has been really nice to see her thrive early on in practice, but we are looking forward to a successful year." Hartings joins the Patriots after playing two seasons at Owens Community College. As a sophomore, she earned first-team All-Conference honors and helped lead the Express to a 40-8 record and a ninth-place finish at the NJCAA Division II national tournament. In addition to Hartings, MacDonald also had positive comments to make on the rest of his recruiting class with the 2016 season quickly approaching. "Lenee’ and Megan in particular have demonstrated that they can both be an offensive force on the court.” The Patriots' 2016 schedule includes 13 home contests among the squad's 29 matches. The Patriots open their 43rd year of intercollegiate volleyball with an all-time record of 804-652. FMU is 51-23 on its home-court over the past four seasons. The post-season PBC Tournament will be hosted by Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., Nov. 18-20. The top eight teams in the PBC will advance to tournament play.

Smith, the Smith University Center provides comprehensive facilities for student services and activities as well as for recreation and athletic programs to serve students, faculty, and staff. Opened in 1974, the center’s gymnasium seats 2,547 for volleyball/basketball and has recently undergone several renovation projects. Improvements include new theatre-style seating on the east side, a hardwood floor, new scoreboards, a new lighting system, a new sound system, and a new paint job. The FMU women’s volleyball team owns a 377-211 (.641) record in the Smith University Center, including a 9-5 mark last season and a 51-23 record over the past four seasons. In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises. Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament. FMU hosted AIAW regional volleyball tournaments in 1978 and 1981 and the Peach Belt Conference volleyball tournament in 1992, 1993, 1998, and 2006.
