2016 SEASON OUTLOOK

10 Patriots Return for 2016 Campaign The Francis Marion University softball team was to have opened its 2016 campaign on Thursday, Feb. 4, with a doubleheader at North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C., but Mother Nature demanded that twinbill be postponed to a later date. Therefore, the Patriots will play their season and home opener as part of Homecoming 2016 festivities on Saturday, Feb. 6, when Francis Marion entertains Southern Wesleyan University for a twinbill at 2 p.m. at the FMU Softball Stadium. FMU head coach Stacey Vallee, entering her 12th season on the Patriot bench, welcomes back 10 letterwinners, including six position starters and one start-ing pitcher, from her 2015 squad that finished 25-22 and tied for sixth in the PBC standings. Leading the returnees are pair of AllConference performers: senior utility player Shannan Lopez and junior outfielder Briana Barzola. Lopez started at four different positions in 2015 and led the Patriots in batting (.393), doubles (16), home runs (7), runs batted in (44), and slugging percentage (.662). Barzola was second on the squad in hitting with a .364 average, scored 25 runs, and stole six bases. In addition to Barzola, the other two starting outfielders from 2015 also return in junior Mikala Barnhart (.355, 34 runs, 14-of-14 stolen bases) and sophomore Tori Gaskins (.241, 13 RBIs). Also returning among the starters are senior shortstop Sharee Blomquist (.233) and senior first baseman and right-handed pitcher Shelby Kelley (.169 avg). In the circle, Kelley posted a 5-7 pitching record and tied the FMU singleseason record for saves with three. Joining Kelley on the pitching staff will be junior lefty Kaylee Childers (transfer from Lake Land College in Illinois), sophomore righty Samantha Wrobleski (transfer from Division III Brandeis University), and freshman southpaw Jessica Thompson (Pedricktown, NJ).

Other newcomers include freshman shortstop Taylor Johnson (San Diego, CA), freshman outfielder Shelby Cox (Galivants Ferry, SC), junior infielder Kellie Howard (Georgetown, SC), freshman utility player Chelsea Welty (St. Helena, SC), and junior infielder Taylor Brunson (Shawnee, KS). Two additional players also return: senior infielder Kristen English and junior utility player Danielle Myers (.224). 2016 PBC Softball Preseason Coaches’ Poll

“I am happy with our squad as we prepare to open the season,” Vallee said. “Our hitting should be better than last season. We have been attacking good pitches in our scrimmages, and that is always a good sign. As long as our pitchers can hit their spots, we should be successful.” Last season, FMU hit .275 as a team, while allowing opponents to hit .275. Vallee pointed to Kelley and Wroblewski as the workhorses who will should the majority of innings in the pitching circle. Behind the plate, Vallee has strength in numbers. Returnees (senior) Taylor Barrineau, (senior) Mykah Nevin, and Lopez have combined to start 89 contests over the past three seasons. Welty could also see time catching as well as at first base. “I feel very comfortable with our outfield given that four players return who started last season – one of whom 4

(Barzola) was All-Conference and another (Barnhart) was our team most valuable player.” Vallee is also excited about what Johnson can bring to the table as far as defense up the middle, while she says Brunson will be the likely starter at second base. The likely choice at the hot corner will be either Blomquist, Howard, Welty, or Lopez. At the plate, the coach is looking for Childers and Welty to assist Lopez with power numbers in the middle of the line-up. FMU was picked to finish eighth in the 2016 Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The Patriots’ 56-game slate includes 14 home doubleheaders and an inseason tournament hosted by the Patriots on Feb. 19-21. Regarding the opening day opponent, FMU and North Greenville have split four previous meetings, including a doubleheader in Florence last season. Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., will serve as the host for the PBC Tournament on April 22-23. In 37 seasons, the Patriot program owns a 1053-678-4 all-time record, including seven national tournament appearances.
