Francis Marion University Men’s Soccer Head Coach John Campbell - FMU Men’s Soccer Coach John Campbell begins his fifth season as head coach of the Francis Marion University men's soccer program. His four-year mark at FMU is 38-2310 and his career coaching record is 124-50-30. This past season, FMU registered an 11-5-2 mark and made a third straight appearance in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals. It marked the third consecutive season of double-digit victories -- something that had happened only once before in program history. The Patriots placed fourth during the PBC regular season with two players being named to each of the All-Conference and All-Aacdemic squads. In 2015, Campbell guided the Patriots to a 12-4-2 record, a third-place finish during the PBC regular season, and a second straight appearance in the PBC Tournament semifinals. FMU narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA National Tournament, was nationally ranked during the regular season, and was ranked in the NCAA regional poll. Three team members earned All-Conference recognition and six were named to the PBC All-Academic Team. Each of Campbell's first three years, the Patriots improved in the win column: from four to five wins in 2012, then to 10 victories in 2013, and to 12 in 2014. In 2013, FMU posted a 10-5-4 record and advanced to the PBC championship match. The season included a pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents, including the nation's top-ranked team -- a program first. Three team members earned All-Conference recognition and four were selected to the PBC AllAcademic squad. In his first year in Florence, he guided a relatively young Patriot squad to a 5-9-2 overall record, a one-win improvement over the 2011 season. Campbell also saw improvement from the FMU defense that allowed 10 fewer goals than in the previous season. Campbell came to Francis Marion from Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y., where he posted an 8627-20 record in seven seasons and earned four invitations to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. His squads captured three Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular-season crowns and three conference tournament titles. In his final season at Domincan (fall 2011), Campbell directed the Chargers to a 9-6-3 record, while three of his players earned conference All-Academic Team accolades. Six times in his seven seasons with the Chargers, his squads recorded double-digit win totals. In 2005, the Chargers were 18-2-0 and ended the year ranked 11th in Division II. The following year, Dominican posted a 12-4-3 mark, including a perfect 8-0 conference record, and ended the year ranked 25th nationally. His squads advanced to NCAA post-season play in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010. He twice earned conference coach of the year honors and was once named the New England Region Coach of the Year. His teams produced 28 all-conference performers and 10 all-region selections. Prior to taking over the coaching reigns at Dominican, Campbell served as an assistant coach at Bucknell University (2004) and Bloomsburg University (2003). He also spent three seasons as the women’s assistant coach at Division I Binghamton University (2000-02). FMU 2016 Men’s Soccer Pre-Season Outlook The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team will open its 2016 campaign on Thursday evening (Sept. 1) with a road match at Lenoir-Rhyne University. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. FMU head coach John Campbell welcomes back 11 lettermen, including seven starters, from last season’s 11-5-2 squad that finished fourth during the PBC regular season and advanced to the semifinals of the PBC Tournament for a third straight season. This past season was the third consecutive season the Patriots have recorded double-digit wins – something that had happened only once before in program history. Recently, FMU was picked to finish fourth in the annual Peach Belt Conference coaches’ pre-season poll. The Patriots return 2015 PBC second-team All-Conference sophomore forward Levin Sandmann and junior midfielders Harrison Smith and Tommy Kues. Sandmann led FMU in goals (10) and game-winning goals (5) – with the latter stat leading the PBC. Sandmann scored the game-winning goal in the PBC quarterfinals to bounce USCA and send the Patriots into the semifinals. Smith totaled 14 points (six goals, two assists) and converted on one of two penalty kicks that the Patriots would get on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes returns for his second season. Last year, he went 10-4-2 with six shutouts and a 1.28 goals against average. FMU returns a pair of defensive starters in junior Gaspard Mianne and sophomore Niklas Sundell. Mianne started in 17 of the Patriots’ 18 matches, while Sundell started in 12 and appeared in 16. The youthful 2016 Patriot edition also includes nine freshmen and one transfer. Of the squad’s 21 members, 14 will be in their first or second year of collegiate eligibility. The Patriots will be led by a junior class that includes six returnees and goalkeeper Jordan Le Guyader (Jersey, United Kingdom), who transferred from Franklin Pierce University. In two seasons with the Ravens, he started 29 matches and registered 126 saves with a 1.64 goals against average. “For us to be successful this season, we have to be a team,” said Campbell. “It will be important for us to communicate and be on the same page every day.” FMU will have a battle in net as Mannes and Le Guyader are both vying for the starting nod to open the season. Campbell noted that the performance by both players in the team’s final practice would determine the opening-day starter. “It’s been a fairly even battle and the opportunity is still there for either one of them to take it. Both players want the job and that has helped them to work harder each day.” In addition to the battle in goal, Campbell noted several other newcomers who might make an immediate impact for the Patriots. “Along the back line, freshmen Luca Knoerzer (Binau, Germany) has had a strong pre-season. I see him coming off the bench and even starting a few matches in the back.” In the midfield, Campbell mentioned freshmen Matthew Bainbridge (Liverpool, England), Lee Northfield (Biggleswade, United Kingdom), and Mathias Hjort (Hoejby, Denmark) as newcomers fighting for starting berths. Campbell also mentioned that junior Jevon Williams would be switching to defense this year after patrolling the midfield for the Patriots last year. At the forward position, Campbell singled out Sandmann as the one who he looks forward to leading the way offensively for the Patriots. Junior midfielder Gael Mabiala and sophomore forward Oliver Drakenhammar have shown both in pre-season this year and over the course of last season that they can put the ball in the back of the net. Last season, Mabiala netted four goals and three assists for the Patriots. Following Thursday’s opener, Francis Marion will play host to the University of Mount Olive on Saturday (Sept. 3) at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field. The Patriots’ 16-match schedule for 2016 includes eight home matches. FMU is 20-5-1 at home over the past three seasons. Francis Marion is 16-23-2 all-time in season openers; including a 4-0 win over Catawba College in last year’s opener. The Patriots have won three of four season-opening matches under Campbell. The post-season PBC Tournament will begin with quarterfinals at campus sites on Nov. 1 and the final four will once again be played at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., on Nov. 4 and 6.

Maddox In the fall of 2014, Francis Marion University and the Patriot Men’s Soccer Team joined forces with the Team IMPACT organization and signed Maddox as the newest member of the FMU squad. Organized in 2001, Team IMPACT has matched children with illnesses to college athletic teams and created relationships that have enhanced the lives of hundreds of courageous children and touched the lives of thousands of student-athletes across the country – more than 430 schools in 45 states nationwide. Team IMPACT believes that by focusing on the best experience for the child, all those involved can also significantly impact families, student-athletes, colleges and communities. Team IMPACT children are drafted onto a squad and become an official member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation. Through this relationship, the child gains great strength, camaraderie and support, while the student-athletes are taught lessons about courage, resiliency and life perspective.

Hartzler Field Completed during the summer of 2012, the Murray G. Hartzler Soccer Field serves as the home facility for both the Francis Marion University men's and women's soccer programs. The field is situated in the new $11.1 million R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex located across the street from the main FMU campus. Hartzler Field is lighted with field dimensions of 120x75 yards and a seating capacity of 650 with a enclosed press box. The physical address is 4700 East Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29506. FMU posted a 7-1-1 mark last season and is 23-10-2 overall on the new pitch. The facility is named for the current athletic director and former men's soccer coach. Hartzler also began the women's soccer program in 1995 and coached for eight seasons. The Patriots leave behind the FMU Soccer Field, located behind the Smith University Center at the southern end of the campus, where the Patriot men posted an all-time home mark of 141-127-19 (.524) and the Patriot women a 101-27-7 (.774) record. Prior to building the FMU Soccer Field, the Patriot men’s team played its home matches on the university’s Cormell (baseball) Field, which at that time included an astroturf infield.

Francis Marion University is a member of the 14-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference (formerly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members include Armstrong State University (in Savannah, Ga.), Augusta University (Augusta, Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.), Flagler College (St. Augustine’s Fla.), Georgia College (Milledgeville, Ga.), Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Ala.), University of North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga.), UNC Pembroke, USC Aiken, and Young Harris College. Formed in December 1989 and headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 15 sports, seven for men and eight for women. Ten of the Peach Belt members sponsor men’s soccer. The 2016 PBC men’s soccer tournament will be held Nov. 1 at sites of the higher seeds and Nov. 4 and 6 at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
