2016 SEASON OUTLOOK

FMU prepares for 2016 campaign The Francis Marion University baseball team will open its 2016 season on Saturday (Jan. 30) when the Patriots play host to Limestone College at 1 p.m. on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium in FMU’s Griffin Athletic Complex. General admission for all games is $8 for adults and $5 for students (FMU students are admitted free with ID). FMU’s 16th-year head coach Art Inabinet returns five position starters and two starting pitchers from last year’s 28-19 squad that placed seventh in the PBC regular season. Altogether 15 of 30 letterwinners return from a year ago. The Patriots have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in four of the last seven years. “I believe if we field .960 as a team and play sound defensively, we’ll have a chance to win a lot of games this season,” said Inabinet. “Our pitching staff has a lot of depth along with velocity. We’re excited to see what the new pitchers can bring to the table. The key for us is playing well defensively behind our pitchers, especially up the middle of the field and in center field.” Senior left-hander Matt Kelley will get the opening day start for the Patriots and senior right-hander Brandon Cook will be on the mound for Sunday’s game. Opponents struck out 109 times in 88.1 innings against Kelley in 2015, as he posted a 7-3 record and a 4.69 earned run average. He was recently named to the 2016 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America Team (honorable mention). Cook made 17 appearances out of the bullpen last season and posted a 1-2 mark with a 5.04 ERA, but will look to transition into a starting role this season. He fanned 27 batters in 25 innings of work, while limiting opponents to a .248 batting average. “Matt and Brandon both have a great ability to throw strikes, and they are both tremendous competitors,” Inabinet said. “Matt can really blow batters away with his stuff and I’m excited for his senior year.” The starters for the third and fourth spots in the rotation are a toss-up between senior southpaw Daniel Barfield (4-3, 5.22 ERA last year), redshirt freshman left-hander Arien

Seymour (Nassau, Bahamas/Linsly HS), and freshman righty Cole Hinnant (Clayton, NC/Clayton HS). Senior left fielder JD Crowe is expected to bolster the heart of Francis Marion’s batting order again in 2016. Inabinet said of Crowe, “JD is one of the best pure hitters that I’ve ever seen and he comes to the field prepared to play every day. He’s a perfectionist when it comes to hitting. He doesn’t swing at bad pitches and battles every at-bat. His work ethic has paid off for him and it rubs off onto his teammates.” Crowe reached base safely in 46 of the 47 games that he suited up for last season, including the last 32 games and will look to extend that at home against Limestone. The position returnees also feature senior center fielder Casey Clauss (.326 avg., 31 RBIs, 11 SBs), senior infielder Randy Loew (.309, 3 HRs, 41 RBIs, 11 doubles), senior infielder Cole Morris (.300, 18 RBIs, 6 SBs), and junior utility player Zach Callahan (.269, 19 RBIs, 8 doubles). “Casey was solid defensively in center-field for us a year ago, he also jump-started our lineup in the lead-off spot (reached base in exactly half of his 74 leadoff opportunities),” Inabinet added. “He has good arm strength, is a tremendous baserunner and he really sees the ball well at the plate. Randy played a good chunk of the season at third base last year and improved as 4

the season went on. We’re going to give him a look at first base this year and see what he can do at the other corner of the infield. Callahan will get time out of the bullpen after converting to a sidearm pitcher. He’s done really well this spring on the mound and we like the versatility that he has to still play defense if needed.” Callahan made 32 starts at shortstop last season and eight at the hot corner. Newcomers who may see opening day action include junior third baseman Tad Martin (USC Lancaster), sophomore infielder Brooks Kennedy (Univ. of North Carolina), junior infielder Antonio Pino (Montgomery Community College), junior catcher Logan Koch (Univ. of South Carolina), and junior catcher Zack Haralambis (USC Lancaster). Pitchers that are new to the staff and look to make an immediate impact in 2016 include junior right-hander Jacob Shumate (Florence-Darlington Tech), junior right-hander Kyle Majette (Old Dominion Univ.), and junior right-hander John McGinty (Univ. of Hartford). Looking to make a return this season after missing 2015 due to injury is junior right-hander Chance DuCharme. He pitched in 14 games as a sophomore and posted the third-best ERA (3.91). The Patriots will play a 50-game schedule, with 32 games being played on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. For the first time ever, the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Tournament will be held at Francis Marion University, May 11-15. In his tenure as head coach at FMU, Inabinet owns a 497-287-2 record. In his 18 seasons as a head coach at the four-year collegiate level, Inabinet holds a 581-341-2 record. The Patriots begin their 45th year of intercollegiate baseball with an all-time record of 1153-728-3 (.613 winning percentage). In 2015, three Patriots earned first-team All-Conference recognition, three gained All-Region honors, one picked up Academic AllPBC accolades, and one was named All-American. FMU ranked seventh nationally in scoring, averaging 8.5 runs per contest and 10th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.9).


FMU BASEBALL HEAD COACH the Patriots ranked among the Top 20 in three statistical categories: fifth in total hits, ninth in fewest walks allowed per nine innings, and 13th in sacrifice bunts. Francis Marion also ranked 25th in earned run average, 28th in runs scored, 33rd in doubles, 37th in batting average, 48th in strikeouts per nine innings, and 50th in scoring.

HEAD COACH Art Inabinet Art Inabinet, 50, is entering his 16th season as head baseball coach at Francis Marion University and his 18th year overall at the university. He owns a 497287-2 coaching mark at FMU, and a career coaching record of 581-341-2 in 18 seasons at the four-year collegiate level.

In 2011, Francis Marion equaled the school record for wins with a 41-16 mark, won the Peach Belt Conference regularseason crown, received its third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, and reached the regional title game for the second year in a row. The Patriots ranked ninth in the final 2011 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II Top 30 poll, the third such end-of-the-season Top 10 ranking in school history (and the second year in a row). In addition to Inabinet earning PBC Coach of the Year honors, FMU also achieved a conference first by garnering Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Freshman of the Year awards. Nationally, the Patriots ranked among the Top 20 in ten statistical categories: second in sacrifice flies, third in sacrifice bunts, fourth in hits and hit-by-pitches, fifth in fewest walks allowed per nine innings, 11th in fielding percentage, 14th in fewest hits allowed per nine innings, 15th in ERA, 16th in triples, and 17th in runs scored. FMU ranked 21st in winloss percentage, 22nd in team batting average, and 37th in runs per game.

In nine of his 15 seasons as head coach, the Patriots have won 30 games, and seven times FMU has earned invitations to the NCAA Division II national tournament. Nine times during his tenure the Patriots have appeared in the final Top 30 national poll, and between the 2005 season and the 2013 campaign, the Patriots appeared in 127 of the 153 national polls. Eleven Francis Marion players have been chosen in the Major League Baseball draft over the past 13 years, and several are currently playing professionally. The St. Matthews, S.C., native served as a Patriot assistant for two seasons (1999-2000) before succeeding long-time head coach Gerald Griffin as the second head coach in the program's history. The Patriots posted a combined 37-48 record during Inabinet's two years as Griffin's assistant.

In 2010, FMU was 40-14, the second-most wins in team history, and the Patriots tied for the PBC’s East Division crown. For the first time, FMU was selected to host the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament where the Patriots placed second. Francis Marion ended the year ranked 10th in the final Top 30 poll. At the end of the season, the Patriots were ranked among the Top 20 nationally in six statistical categories, including eighth in sacrifice bunts, 13th in earned run average and fewest hits allowed per nine innings, 14th in won-loss percentage, 15th in fielding percentage, and 20th in players being hit-by-pitches.

This past season, FMU posted a 28-19 mark and placed seventh during the Peach Belt Conference regular season. Three Patriots earned first-team All-PBC and All-Region honors, one picked up Academic All-PBC accolades, and one was named All-American. FMU ranked seventh nationally in scoring (8.5 runs per contest) and 10th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.9). In 2014, Francis Marion registered a 28-22 overall record and placed ninth during the PBC regular season. FMU was eliminated from the PBC tournament by the eventual champion.

In 2009, FMU posted a 38-15-1 record, finished second during the PBC regular season, won the PBC Tournament title, and earned its fourth national tournament bid in the past seven years, placing third at the regional. The Patriots were ranked 14th in the final Top 30 poll. In the NCAA endof-the-season team rankings, the Patriots ranked in the top 50 of 13 different categories: including 29th in fielding percentage, 39th in batting average, and 42nd in team ERA.

During the 2013 campaign, the Patriots posted a 28-20 mark and finished sixth during the Peach Belt regular season -- only one win shy of placing second. In 2012, Francis Marion finished with a 40-18 record and made a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament – where the Patriots reached the regional title game for the third consecutive season. The Patriots tied for second during the PBC regular season, reached the semifinals of the PBC Tournament, and were ranked seventh nationally in the final Top 25 poll. In 2006, Inabinet directed the Patriots to a program-best 41-18 record, a No.6 national ranking, and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II College World Series. The Patriots were ranked as high as third in the national poll during the 2006 campaign and spent seven weeks in the Top 10. FMU placed second in the Peach Belt regular-season standings. Following the 2006 season, Inabinet was selected as the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company Coach of the Year for the South Atlantic Region.

"Coach of the Year" for the NJCAA Region X, as the Mounties posted a 31-22 record and won the region title. Inabinet earned both the B.S. degree in history and the M.A.T. degree in secondary education (social sciences) from Winthrop University. As an undergraduate student, he was a four-year letterman on the Eagle baseball team. Following his playing career, he served as a graduate assistant coach at Winthrop from 1989 to 1991. He also was the head baseball coach at The Catawba School for one year (1992). Inabinet is director of the annual FMU Baseball Camp held during the summer. He is married to the former Kimberly Reese, and the couple has one child, Reese.

In 2005, he led FMU to a 34-16-1 record, a No. 14 national ranking, and an NCAA post-season invitation. During the 2005 campaign, he captured his 200th career win, and FMU's 34 wins was one shy of the then team record. Ten of the 16 losses were to nationally ranked opponents. FMU's team ERA of 3.11 was the lowest for a Patriot staff since 1980 and ranked eighth in NCAA II. The Patriots placed third in the PBC standings. In 2004, Inabinet guided the Patriots to a 29-17 record and a fifthplace finish during the PBC regular season. FMU won 10 of its final 11 contests and spent six weeks in the Division II Top 30 poll, including one week at No. 7, the program's then highest ranking ever. The team's ERA of 3.47 led the PBC and ranked 11th nationally. In 2003, he directed FMU to a 30-20 mark, a No. 18 national ranking, and a third-place finish at the NCAA's South Atlantic Regional. Picked to finish eighth in the PBC preseason coaches' poll, the Patriots finished third in the PBC with an 18-10 mark, only one-half game away from winning the program's first-ever conference title. The 18 conference wins were a team record. Playing an extremely tough schedule in 2003, FMU was 10-10 against Top-30 opponents. In Inabinet's first two seasons at the helm of the Patriots, FMU posted records of 24-27 in 2001 and 26-27 in 2002. Prior to joining the FMU staff in 1999, he served as head coach at North Greenville College for six seasons, recording a 155-122 mark (84-54 as a 4-year institution). He guided the Mounties program from junior college status to a four-year program in 1996. After making that transition, North Greenville was 14-21 in 1996, 34-17 in 1997, and 36-16 in 1998, including a pair of second-place finishes in the Mid-South Conference his last two years. Kyle Gallman

Josh Eachues begins his first year as an assistant coach with the Francis Marion University baseball program. His responsibilities include working in the areas of hitting and fielding, as well as recruiting.

Kyle Gallman, a native of Orangeburg, S.C., begins his first year as an assistant coach on the Patriot baseball staff, and his second year with the program. He joined the staff in 2014 as a volunteer assistant.

Eachues most recently served as an assistant coach at USC Sumter for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, the latter of which included an appearance in the 2015 NJCAA World Series.

Gallman played two seasons at Coker College and FlorenceDarlington Technical College as a catcher and outfielder. He graduated from Coker in 2013 with a B.S. degree in physical education and sports management.

A native of Newberry, he attended and played at both Coastal Carolina University and USC Aiken, earning his undergraduate degree in exercise and sports science from USCA.

Gallman graduated from Edisto High School where he was a two-time All-Region performer.

Following his collegiate playing career, he played in the South Coast (Independent Professional) League for both the Aiken Foxhounds and the South Georgia Peanuts. Eachues signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008 and palyed in the Gulf Coast League in Clearwater, Fla. He later played two seasons of professional baseball with the Washington Wild Things in the Independent Frontier League, sandwiched around a season of winter ball in Australia. He also coached an Under-19 team in Perth while playing winter ball.

Matt Rubino Matt Rubino enters his first year as a student assistant with the Patriot program. A native of Aliquippa, Pa., Rubino played for the Patriots during the 2015 season and earned AllAmerica recognition from two different organizations: first-team honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and second-team accolades from Daktronics, Inc. He became the sixth All-American in the history of the FMU program.

He returned to the USCA baseball program and served as a volunteer assistant coach for four seasons until taking the position at USC Sumter. His also own coaching experience as an assistant with the Outer Banks Daredevils in the Coastal Plains League and the Silver Spring (Md.) Thunderbolts of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Summer League.

Rubino finished third in the Peach Belt Conference in hitting (.431), runs batted in (63), triples (4), and on-base percentage (.514), while ranking fourth in doubles (19), total bases (129), and slugging percentage (.713). He also led FMU with eight home runs. His batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage are all second-best in program history – second only to marks set in 1984, 1990, and 1982 respectively – while his RBI total is the fourth-highest total in team history and only four shy of the school record.

At Coastal Carolina, he was a member of the first 50-win team in program history and the top seed at the NCAA Regional in Tempe, Ariz. During his one playing season at USCA, Eachues was named to the 2007 Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team.

In the field, he started 23 games behind the plate, 17 games at second base, and was the designated hitter on seven occasions. He garnered first-team All-PBC honors and firstteam All-Region recognition from three voting organizations. Rubino transferred to FMU from the University of North Carolina, where he played two seasons. He was also an AllRegion selection at Florence-Darlington Technical College in 2012. He is a graduate of Hopewell High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. 7

Francis Marion University will hold two sessions of its annual Baseball Camp in 2016, June 27-July 1 and July 11-14. This camps provides the opportunity for young athletes to develop and polish their diamond skills.

FMU PATRIOTS SUMMER CAMP

The camp is open to children ages 7-12, and runs from 9 a.m. until noon. Conducted by Francis Marion head baseball coach Art Inabinet, his staff, and members of the Patriot baseball team, the camp will stress learning basic game strategy and making the most of individual skills. Applications are now being accepted. The camp will cost $90 per session, if paid in advance, or $100 on the first day. Enrollment is limited. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium

Opened in the spring of 2012, the R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex houses the new home for Patriot baseball -- the new Clifford S. Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. The street address for the complex (GPS) is 4700 East Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29506. The field is part of the $11.1 million west campus athletic complex that includes a lake, fieldhouse, softball stadium, and soccer stadium. One main ticket office -- on the east side -serves the entire complex. The baseball facility consists of 800 seats with capacity of 1,755, and includes concession area, restrooms, two VIP suites, and pressbox. The field dimensions are 330 feet down each line, 375 feet to the power alleys, and 400 feet to center center, with approximately the same foul territory as at old Cormell Field. Bullpens are located down each foul line, and the first phase of the fieldhouse is located adjacent to the bullpen down the right field line.

Old CLIFFORD S. CORMELL FIELD Named in honor of Florence businessman Clifford S. Cormell, Cormell Field was offically dedicated on March 5, 1974. Cormell was instrumental in helping establish Francis Marion University, and early on he served as cochairman of the Patriots Brigade (now known as the Swamp Fox Club). When opened, The ‘Cliff was one of only a handful of collegiate facilities with an astroturf infield. The astroturf was replaced by natual grass in the 1990’s. The dimensions of the field are 320 to right and left fields, 365 to the power alleys, and 400 to center field. Seating accomodates 400 spectators with standing room for up to 1,000. FMU lost that first game in 1974, 5-3 to the University of South Carolina before a standing room-only crowd. Francis Marion ended its run at this field with a 20770-1 mark in its final 278 home games. FMU beat Flagler College 2-1 on April 7, 2012, in the final contest before moving across the street to the new Comell Field at Sparrow Stadium in the Griffin Athletic Complex.

Francis Marion University is a member of the 14-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference (formerly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members include Armstrong State University (in Savannah, Ga.), Augusta University (Augusta, Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.), Flagler College (St. Augustine, Fla.), Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, Ga.), Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.), University of North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga.), UNC Pembroke, USC Aiken, and Young Harris College (Young Harris, Ga.). Formed in December 1989 and headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 15 sports, seven for men and eight for women. Of the 14 members, only Clayton State does not sponsor baseball. The Peach Belt Conference post-season baseball tournament will be held this year (for the first time) in Florence at Sparrow Stadium, May 11-15, 2016.

Francis Marion stuns Gamescocks 5-4 in stadium debut FLORENCE, SC -Twentieth-ranked Francis Marion University plated all its runs with two outs and the Patriots held on for a 5-4 win over ninth-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Division I champion South Carolina, Wednesday evening (April 11) at the opening of the new Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. Francis Marion improves to 27-13 and avenges in a way an earlier christening loss against USC (24-10). The Gamecocks rallied for a 5-3 win on March 5, 1974, at the official dedication of the Patriots' former facility, "old" Cormell Field. Wednesday, FMU sophomore right-hander Jeffrey Stoner induced a sharp line-out to right field by USC pinch-hitter Sean Sullivan for the final out with the tying run on second base to send the capacity crowd of 1,755 into a frenzy. The victory was the 400th at FMU for Patriot head coach Art Inabinet, now in his 12th season as head coach. Junior first baseman Stephen Tarkenton was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, while sophomore third baseman Michael Wilson and junior right fielder Jarrod Reed both collected a pair of hits. Junior first baseman Christian Walker led South Carolina with a 3-for-4 night that included an RBI single and a mammoth 372-foot solo homer to left field. Francis Marion broke up the scoreless contest with three runs in the bottom of the third. After South Carolina starter Adam Westmoreland (2-1) retired the first two batters of the inning, Wilson singled to left center. Senior outfielder Tyler Boyd extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a bunt single to the left of the mound. Junior second baseman Tyler Hibbs plated the first run at the new stadium with an RBI single to center field. Senior center fielder Buddy Sosnoskie followed with a run-scoring single to left center, and he took second on the unsuccessful throw to third. After a pitching change by USC, Hibbs scored the third run on a wild pitch by Patrick Sullivan. Walker got one run back with his solo shot in the top of the fourth. An RBI single up the middle by catcher Dante Rosenberg drew South Carolina to within 3-2 in the fifth. However with the tying run at second base, FMU senior southpaw Matt Broderick (6-1) got the third out by covering first on a ball that eluded Tarkenton at first and was flagged down by Hibbs in the hole between first and second. Broderick limited the Gamecocks to two runs on four hits in five frames, while striking out three and walking one. Junior Patriot righty Don Sandifer then held the Gamecocks at bay with two scoreless and hitless innings. FMU added a pair of two-out runs in the seventh to go up 5-2. Wilson reached on a fielder's choice grounder, stole second, and moved to third after back-to-back walks to Hibbs and Sosnoskie. Tarkenton then poked an 0-1 pitch from Evan Beal up the middle to plate Wilson and Hibbs. Walker's run-scoring single in the top of the eighth cut the margin to 5-3, but Stoner stranded two runners by fanning Joey Pankake. In the ninth, pinch hitter Kyle Martin got the Gamecocks to within 5-4 with an RBI groundout, but Stoner got the final out to earn his second save of 2012.
