FMU is named in honor of South Carolina’s Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox,” for using the terrain to out-fox the British. Located about seven miles east of Florence, in the beautiful northeast section of South Carolina, the 400-acre campus is about 90 miles from the state capital of Columbia, 60 miles from the shores of Myrtle Beach, and 180 miles from the mountains of the Carolinas.

Francis Marion University placed 83 student athletes, including five volleyball players, on last year’s Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), nearly half of all our student athletes. FMU also placed eight vb student-athletes on the FMU 2014 fall Swamp Fox Athletic- Academic Honor Roll, and five on the 2015 spring honor roll.

Francis Marion University 2015 Coaching Staff Paul MacDonald - FMU Volleyball Coach Paul MacDonald, 42, is entering his 10th year as the head coach for the Francis Marion University women's volleyball program. He owns a 197-182 career coaching mark in 12 seasons, including a 148-133 record in his nine years at Francis Marion. In nine seasons, his Patriot teams have produced 11 All-Conference selections. Last year, MacDonald's charges posted a 9-20 mark. The squad ranked 46th nationally in service aces per set (1.73) and 76th in total aces served (176). Two team mebers were named to the Peach Belt Conference AllAcademic Team. In 2013, he directed FMU to a 21-9 overall record and the program's highest Peach Belt Conference win total (12-6 mark) in 15 seasons. The Patriots placed third during the PBC regular season and MacDonald was named the conference "Coach of the Year" for the second time. Three team members earned All-Conference honors (one AllRegion selection) and three picked up PBC All-Academic Team recognition. FMU ranked among the top 45 percent of all Division II institutions in every one of the seven national team stats categories. Heading those accomplishments was the Patriots ranking 43rd nationally in service aces per set (1.74), 52nd in won-loss percentage (.700), and 87th in assists per set (11.66). In 2012, MacDonald guided a relatively young Patriot squad to an 18-12 record. FMU earned a fourth-place finish in the Peach Belt standings and narrowly missed earning a bid to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Four team members also earned PBC All-Academic Team recognition. In 2011, the Patriots finished with a 12-18 record. Six team members earned Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team recognition. Francis Marion earned an AVCA Team Academic Award (for the third straight year) -- one of only three PBC schools to gain that honor for 2011. In 2010, FMU posted a 15-16 mark with a pair of Patriots earning All-Conference honors and two gaining PBC All-Academic recognition. The Patriot squad earned an AVCA Team Academic Award (for the second year in a row) -- one of only four PBC schools to gain that honor for 2010. In 2008, MacDonald earned PBC "Coach of the Year" honors while guiding the Patriots to a 23-9 record and the program's third-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament invitation. FMU placed second during the PBC regular-season and advanced to the title match of the PBC Tournament. In 2007, FMU was 13-21 and placed fourth during the Peach Belt regular season. In a very successful first campaign (2006), MacDonald guided the Patriots to a 26-8 record and a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship. MacDonald came to FMU from Mount Mercy College, an NAIA school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In three seasons directing the Mustang program, he compiled a 49-49 record, including a 25-11 mark in 2005 - the team's best record in more than a decade. Utilizing a roster that did not include any seniors, he also guided Mount Mercy to a second-place finish in the Midwest Classic Conference with a 6-1 record and to a spot in the NAIA Region VII Tournament for the first time since 2002. For that effort, he received conference "Coach of the Year" honors. A native of Flat Rock, Mich., a suburb of Detroit, MacDonald earned a B.A. degree in business from Michigan State University and an M.Ed. degree in physical education from Wayne State University. He earned CAP I certification through the USA Volleyball Coaches' Accreditation Program in 2007. Prior to accepting the position at Mount Mercy, he was an assistant coach at Division II Wayne State for the 2002 season, an assistant coach at Macomb County Community College for the 2001 campaign, and was an assistant and interim head coach during the 1999 season at Division I Oakland University. MacDonald spent five years (2004-2008) with the USA National Olympic Development Program. He has five years of experience coaching at the high school level - including winning a district championship at Regina High School in Harper Woods, Mich. - and seven years of experience coaching at the Junior Olympics and club level. His Junior Olympic squads placed first in the state of Michigan in 1998 and third in 2002. He is a member of the United States Volleyball Association and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He has worked camps at the universities of Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin; Michigan State University; Stanford University, Purdue University; Eastern Michigan University; Mount Mercy; and at high schools in Michigan. He was a coach for the 2006 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Charlotte, N.C., the 2007 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Davidson, N.C., and the 2008 USA High Performance A2 Camp in Baltimore, Md. He now directs the FMU Patriot Volleyball Summer Camp programs and the Florence Juniors Volleyball Club. MacDonald was married in the summer of 2012.

FMU 2015 Volleyball Outlook The Francis Marion University volleyball team will open its 2015 season by playing at the Newberry College Tournament, Sept. 4-5, and then the following weekend by hosting its annual FMU Invitational Tournament on Sept. 11-12 in the Smith University Center. FMU head coach Paul MacDonald welcomes back five letterwinners, including three starters, from last year’s 9-20 squad that finished eighth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season. Returning starters include 5-9 senior hitter Alexzandra Reed, 6-2 junior middleblocker Caroline Boone, and 6-1 junior hitter Carlie Smith. Last season, Reed ranked second in the PBC for kills per set (3.92) and fourth in total kills (400). Boone led the Patriots in hitting percentage (.265) and blocks (67), while ranking seventh in the conference in service aces per set (0.36). Smith suffered through an injury-plaque season in 2014, but still averaged 1.63 kills and 2.02 digs per set. Also returning are 6-1 senior middleblocker Shelby Schindler and 6-1 sophomore hitter Meagan Fajman. In addition to the returnees, 5-11 senior outside hitter Emily Sears will also be back on the court. A second-team All-Conference selection in 2013, she missed all of last year with an injury. Sears led the team in 2013 in kills per set with 3.17, a figure that ranked sixth in the conference. She also ranked sixth in the PBC in total kills (355), seventh in points per set (3.57), 19th in hitting percentage (.219), 25th in block assists (46), and 44th in aces per set (0.17). Her hitting percentage was 18 points higher in PBC matches and she notched 20 matches with double-figure kills, including 12 in PBC play. Sears came to FMU in 2013 after transferring from the University of Southern Mississippi. The team’s recruiting class includes transfers Kadeeja Griffin (middleblocker), Samantha Hinrichs (setter), and Shelbi Meek (libero/outside hitter) and freshmen Georgia Garrison (outside hitter), Emily Stanley (libero), Carrie McGinnis (setter), and Chloe Attram (middleblocker). “The keys to our success in 2015 will be to work hard, work together, stay healthy, and remain disciplined in both good times and bad,” said MacDonald. “Our pre-season has gone well. The team defense has made very good progress and our passing has improved tremendously since our initial workout on Aug. 17. I have been most pleased with the connection between our hitters and our two new setters. Despite both (setters) Samantha and Carrie being new to the program, we are ahead of schedule in meshing the hitters and setters. I expect both to see playing time as we start the season. “Along the frontline, Alexzandra is coming off an impactful junior campaign that saw opposing defenses focus their attention on her. I am looking for her to apply her experience to lead the squad.” Reed is only 145 kills shy of 1,000 for her career. “Caroline will be our anchor for the blocking and middle attack. Coming off a solid sophomore season, she is still improving in all facets of the game. A healthy Carlie has had a good pre-season, possesses the knowledge and understanding of our system, and has made great strides since the spring season. “The addition of Emily back into the fold gives us many more offensive options. It has been a long road back for her, but we are looking forward to a successful senior year.” With her in the line-up, the Patriots posted a 21-9 mark in 2013 and placed third in the Peach Belt. “Shelby Schindler is an excellent blocking threat and Meagan has improved her play and should see time hitting on the right side.” In addition to the two setters, MacDonald also had positive comments to make on the rest of his recruiting class as they prepare for the 2015 season. “Georgia, Kadeeja, and Shelbi Meek have demonstrated that they can elevate our play and make an impact on the court. Chloe’s athleticism has been impressive and as she develops she will also impact the scoresheet. Emily has shown nice improvements, especially her serve, as she adjusts to the collegiate game.” The Patriots’ 2015 schedule includes 14 home matches among the squad’s 29 matches. FMU open its 42nd year of intercollegiate volleyball with an all-time record of 788-638. In nine seasons at Francis Marion, MacDonald is the winningest coach in program history with 148 victories, while his career mark stands at 197-182.

The FMU women’s volleyball team owns a 368-206 (.641) record in the Smith University Center, including a 6-8 mark last season and a 42-18 record over the past four seasons. Between 1995 and 1997, the squad won 30 consecutive home matches, and between 1995 and 2000, won 54 of 56 home contests (including undefeated home seasons in 1996 and 1998). In addition to numerous sporting events, the building has hosted musical concerts, an appearance by Miss America 1994 Kimberly Aiken, U.S. Presidential candidates, and both college and high school commencement exercises. Francis Marion hosted the 1978 AIAW Division II National Women’s Basketball Tournament. FMU hosted AIAW regional volleyball tournaments in 1978 and 1981 and the Peach Belt Conference volleyball tournament in 1992, 1993, 1998, and 2006.
