Francis Marion University Men’s Soccer Head Coach John Campbell - FMU Men’s Soccer Coach John Campbell begins his fourth season as head coach of the Francis Marion University men's soccer program. His three-year mark at FMU is 2718-8 and his career coaching record is 113-45-28. Last season, he guided the Patriots to a 12-4-2 record, a third-place finish during the Peach Belt Conference regular season, the progeram’s 300th win, and a second straight appearance in the PBC Tournament semifinals. FMU was nationally ranked during the regular season and was ranked in the NCAA regional poll. Three team members earned All-Conference recognition and six were named to the PBC All-Academic Team. Each of the past three years, the Patriots have shown improvement in the win column: from four to five wins in 2012, then to 10 victories in 2013, and to 12 in 2014. In 2013, FMU posted a 10-5-4 record and advanced to the PBC championship match. The season included a pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents, including the nation's top-ranked team -- a program first. Three team members earned All-Conference recognition and four were selected to the PBC All-Academic squad. In his first year in Florence, he guided a relatively young Patriot squad to a 5-9-2 overall record, a onewin improvement over the 2011 season. Campbell also saw improvement from the FMU defense that allowed 10 fewer goals than in the previous season. Campbell came to Francis Marion from Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y., where he posted an 8627-20 record in seven seasons and earned four invitations to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. His squads captured three Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular-season crowns and three conference tournament titles. In his final season at Domincan (fall 2011), Campbell directed the Chargers to a 9-6-3 record, while three of his players earned conference All-Academic Team accolades. Six times in his seven seasons with the Chargers, his squads recorded double-digit win totals. In 2005, the Chargers were 18-2-0 and ended the year ranked 11th in Division II. The following year, Dominican posted a 12-4-3 mark, including a perfect 8-0 conference record, and ended the year ranked 25th nationally. His squads advanced to NCAA post-season play in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010. He twice earned conference coach of the year honors and was once named the New England Region Coach of the Year. His teams produced 28 all-conference performers and 10 all-region selections. Prior to taking over the coaching reigns at Dominican, Campbell served as an assistant coach at Bucknell University (2004) and Bloomsburg University (2003). He also spent three seasons as the women’s assistant soccer coach at Division I Binghamton University (2000-2002). Campbell graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College with a bachelor of arts degree in psychological sciences. He helped lead the Raiders soccer team to back-to-back conference titles and NAIA National Tournament appearances as a junior and senior. He played one season at Green Mountain College – where he led the team in assists and was second in goals scored – before transferring to Robert Wesleyan. He went on to play one season for the Vermont Voltage in the Professional Development League. He holds an NSCAA National and Advanced National Diploma.

FMU 2015 Men’s Soccer Pre-Season Outlook The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team will open its 2015 campaign on Thursday evening (Sept. 3) with a road match at Catawba College. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. A live video feed and live stats will be available on www.fmupatriots.com . FMU head coach John Campbell welcomes back 10 lettermen, including five starters, from last season’s 12-4-2 squad that finished third during the PBC regular season, was nationally ranked during the regular season, advanced to the semifinals of the PBC Tournament, and was ranked in the NCAA regional poll. Each of the past three years, the Patriots have shown improvement in the win column: from four to five wins in 2012, then to 10 victories in 2013, and to 12 in 2014. Recently, FMU was picked to finish third in the annual Peach Belt Conference coaches’ pre-season poll – the squad’s highest pre-season ranking in seven seasons. Catawba was 6-9-2 a year ago, including a 2-0 loss to Francis Marion. The Indians have been tabbed to finish 10th in the South Atlantic Conference according to that league’s pre-season poll. Francis Marion leads the all-time series 9-6-1 and has outscored the Indians 29-25. The Patriots return two-time All-Conference midfielder Sven Ricke and All-Conference defender Jeremy Bonyaa. Ricke led FMU in scoring (19 points) and assists (9). He has also scored five goals, one of which was a match-winner, and took the majority of the team’s corner kicks. Senior defender David Sheridan also returns for his fourth season. Last year, he tallied four goals and one assist. He has appeared in 51 career matches and helped the Patriot defense improve from allowing 42 goals in 2011 to just 21 last season. The other two returning starters are sophomore midfielder Thomas Kues and junior center back Peter Beniseau. The young 2015 Patriot edition also includes 15 newcomers. Of the squad’s 25 members, 20 will be in their first or second year of collegiate eligibility. “For us to be successful, we have to be organized on both sides of the ball,” said Campbell. “It will be equally important that we outwork our opponents every day.” FMU will be working with a freshman goalkeeper this season as newcomers Jonathan Mannes (Auckland, New Zealand) and Robert Schreiner (Clover, SC) are battling for the starting nod. Campbell noted that Wednesday’s final practice would determine the opening day starter. “It’s been a pretty even battle and the opportunity is still wide open for either one of them to take it. Both players are similar in many ways. They are both tall (Mannes 6-6 and Schreiner 6-2) and cover a lot of goal. They both are really good at making the first save, and are even in what their strengths are.” In addition to the two keepers, Campbell pointed to several other newcomers who might make an immediate impact for the Patriots. “Along the back line, freshmen Caleb Jenkins (Columbia, SC) and Niklas Sundell (Enebyberg, Sweden) and sophomore Gaspard Mianne (Meudon, France) have had strong pre-season camps. All of these guys I see coming off the bench and giving time in the back.” In the midfield, he mentioned freshmen Donovan Hanzal (Aiken, SC), Sindre Traaseth (Lillehammer, Norway), and Anton Jonsson (Karlshamn, Sweden) as newcomers fighting for possible starting berths. At the striker position, Campbell singled out sophomore Levin Sandmann (Heidelberg, Germany) as one who has done a good job in the pre-season and who could fight for a starting spot this season. Following Thursday’s opener, Francis Marion will play host to local rival Coker College on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field. The Patriots’ 17-match schedule for 2015 includes eight home matches. FMU is 13-4-0 at home over the past two seasons. FMU has won two of three season-opening matches under Campbell. The post-season PBC Tournament will begin with quarterfinals on campus sites on Nov. 3 and the final four will once again be played at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., on Nov. 6 and 8.

Maddox In the fall of 2014, Francis Marion University and the Patriot Men’s Soccer Team joined forces with the Team IMPACT organization and signed Maddox as the newest member of the FMU squad. Organized in 2001, Team IMPACT has matched children with illnesses to college athletic teams and created relationships that have enhanced the lives of hundreds of courageous children and touched the lives of thousands of student-athletes across the country – more than 250 schools in 36 states nationwide. Team IMPACT believes that by focusing on the best experience for the child, all those involved can also significantly impact families, student-athletes, colleges and communities. Team IMPACT children are drafted onto a squad and become an official member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation. Through this relationship, the child gains great strength, camaraderie and support, while the student-athletes are taught lessons about courage, resiliency and life perspective.

Hartzler Field Completed during the summer of 2012, the Murray G. Hartzler Soccer Field serves as the home facility for both the Francis Marion University men's and women's soccer programs. The field is situated in the new $11.1 million R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex located across the street from the main FMU campus. Hartzler Field is lighted with field dimensions of 120x75 yards and a seating capacity of 650 with a enclosed press box. The physical address is 4700 East Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29506. FMU posted a 7-3-0 mark last season and is 16-9-1 overall on the new pitch. The facility is named for the current athletic director and former men's soccer coach. Hartzler also began the women's soccer program in 1995 and coiached that squad for eight seasons. The Patriots leave behind the FMU Soccer Field, located behind the Smith University Center at the southern end of the campus, where the Patriot men posted an all-time home mark of 141-127-19 (.524) and the Patriot women a 101-27-7 (.774) record. Prior to building the FMU Soccer Field, the Patriot men’s team played its home matches on the university’s Cormell (baseball) Field, which at that time included an astroturf infield.
