Francis Marion University placed 83 student athletes, including 13 baseball players, on last year’s Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), 45 percent of all our student athletes. 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK
FMU opens first full season at Sparrow Stadium The nationally ranked Francis Marion University baseball team will open its 2013 season on Friday when the Patriots play host to Claflin University at 3 p.m. in the opening game of the Carolinas Hospital System Baseball Classic. The four-team event will continue through Sunday with two games each day on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium in FMU’s new Griffin Athletic Complex. Daily admission will be $8 for adults and $5 for students. FMU students will be admitted free with identification and appropriate Swamp Fox Club passes will be honored. In addition to FMU playing Claflin on Friday, King College (TN) will meet Belmont Abbey College at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Belmont Abbey will play Claflin at noon and FMU will battle King at 3 p.m. To conclude the event on Sunday, Claflin and King will play at noon and FMU and Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m. Francis Marion is ranked seventh in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper pre-season 2013 national poll. The Patriots also appear in the rankings of two other preseason national polls: 10th in the College Baseball Lineup NCAA Division II Top-30 poll and 19th in the D2BaseballNews.com Top-25 poll. FMU head coach Art Inabinet welcomes back 14 letterwinners, including six position starters and five members of the pitching staff from last year’s squad that posted a 40-18 record and made a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Patriots have reached the regional title game each of the past three seasons, while also registering 40-win seasons. According to Inabinet, senior righthander Gary Ashcraft (6-0 record in 2012 with a 3.27 earned run average) will start the season opener. Sophomore righty Chris Harrison, a transfer from Coastal Carolina University (0-1, 1 save, 1.35 ERA), is the Patriots’ probable starter on Saturday and senior right-hander Don Sandifer (1-4, 3 saves, 4.62 ERA) will pitch on Sunday against the Crusaders. “For the first time in a while, I feel as though our strength will be in our hitters,” Inabinet said. “We return some position players who have a lot of collegiate experience. Our pitching staff took a hit when pre-season All-Region selection Spencer Jordan (10-4, 2.97 ERA) went down with a seasonending arm injury earlier this month. That being said, we do return two quality starters in Ashcraft and Sandifer and now some of the newcomers and returning bullpen guys will have to step up and fill Jordan’s void.” Sandifer, the lone fourth-year senior on the roster, has a career record of 19-8 with a 3.03 ERA in 50 appearances. He has fanned
209 batters in 237.2 innings.
FMU does return closer Jeffrey Stoner, who was recently named to the PBC preseason All-Conference team. The junior right-hander moved to the Patriot bullpen midway through the 2012 season and finished second in the conference, and 27th nationally, with nine saves. He registered a 6-4 record with a 3.67 earned run average and struck out 88 batters in only 83.1 innings pitched. He finished fifth in the conference in total strikeouts and ranked 45th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (9.43 per game). As a freshman in 2011, he was 9-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 15 appearances and earned All-Conference recognition.
Leading the position returnees are senior third baseman Stephen Tarkenton (.294 average in 2012 with 11 doubles, and 37 runs batted in), senior outfielder Jarrod Reed (.333, 32 RBIs), junior shortstop Michael Wilson (.318, 27 RBIs), and senior

first baseman Rhodes Dickerson (.256). Seniors Jacob Golliday ( .283, 9 2Bs, 2 HRs, 24 RBIs) and Will Chandler (.306, 3 HRs, 17 RBIs) both return to handle the catching and designated hitting roles. Outfielder Isaac Davenport, a transfer from Chattanooga State Community College, and infielder Jacob Watson, a transfer from Louisburg College, head a list of 18 newcomers – eight of whom are true freshmen. “We are excited to get the season started, and the players are ready to play someone other than themselves. We have been beating up on each other for the past three weeks.” On being picked as the Peach Belt Conference’s pre-season favorite, Inabinet pined, “It is nice to be recognized by your peers as having a quality program, but at the same time it is pre-season and we want to be there at the end of the year. Our goal is to play hard each and every day, communicate, catch, and throw so at the end of the season we can put ourselves in a position to make a run at a championship.” The Patriots’ 50-game slate includes 30 home contests in their new facility. Inabinet, who is entering his 16th year (13 at FMU) as a college head coach, is three wins shy of 500 for his career with a 497-280-2 record.

HEAD COACH Art Inabinet Art Inabinet, 47, is entering his 13th season as head baseball coach at Francis Marion University and his 15th year overall at the university. He owns a 413226-2 coaching mark at FMU, and a career coaching record of 497-280-2 in 15 seasons at the four-year collegiate level. In nine of his 12 seasons as head coach, the Patriots have won 30 games, and seven times FMU has earned invitations to the NCAA Division II national tournament. Nine times during his tenure the Patriots have appeared in the final Top 30 national poll at the conclusion of the season, and dating back to the 2005 season, the Patriots have appeared in 126 of the past 135 national polls. Eleven Francis Marion players have been chosen in the Major League Baseball draft over the past 11 years, and five are currently playing professionally. The St. Matthews, S.C., native served as a Patriot assistant for two seasons (1999-2000) before succeeding long-time head coach Gerald Griffin as the second head coach in the program's history. The Patriots posted a combined 37-48 record during Inabinet's two years as Griffin's assistant. This past season, Francis Marion finished with a 40-18 record and made a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament – where the Patriots reached the regional title game for the third consecutive season. The Patriots tied for second during the Peach Belt Conference regular season, reached the semifinals of the PBC Tournament, and were ranked seventh nationally in the final Top 25 poll. FMU has posted 40-win campaigns each of the past three seasons. In the final NCAA stats, the Patriots ranked among the Top 20 in three statistical categories: fifth in total hits (658), ninth in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (2.68), and 13th in sacrifice bunts (59). Francis Marion also ranked 25th in earned run average (3.42), 28th in runs scored (385), 33rd in doubles (103), 37th in batting average (.314), 48th in strikeouts per nine innings (7.3), and 50th in scoring (6.6 runs per game). In 2011, Francis Marion equaled the school record for wins with a 41-16 mark, won the Peach Belt Conference regular-season crown, received its third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, and
reached the regional title game for the second year in a row. The Patriots ranked ninth in the final 2011 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II Top 30 poll, the third such end-of-the-season Top 10 ranking in school history (and the second year in a row). In addition to Inabinet earning PBC Coach of the Year honors, FMU also achieved a conference first by garnering Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, and Freshman of the Year awards. Nationally, the Patriots ranked among the Top 20 in ten statistical categories: second in sacrifice flies (40), third in sacrifice bunts (75), fourth in hits (629) and hit-by-pitches (93), fifth in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (2.41), 11th in fielding percentage (0.971), 14th in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (7.65), 15th in earned run average (2.83), 16th in triples (20), and 17th in runs scored (407). FMU ranked 21st in win-loss percentage (0.719), 22nd in team batting average (0.323), and 37th in runs per game (7.1). In 2010, FMU was 40-14, the second-most wins in team history, and the Patriots tied for the PBC’s East Division crown. For the first time, FMU was selected to host the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament where the Patriots placed second. Francis Marion ended the year ranked 10th in the final Top 30 poll. At the conclusion of the season, the Patriots were ranked among the Top 20 nationally in six statistical categories, including eighth in sacrifice bunts (56), 13th in earned run average (3.67) and fewest hits allowed per nine innings (8.63), 14th in won-loss percentage (.741), 15th in fielding percentage (.967), and 20th in players being hit-by-pitches (83). In 2009, FMU posted a 38-15-1 record, finished second during the PBC regular season, won the PBC Tournament title, and earned its fourth national tournament bid in the past seven years, placing third at the regional. The Patriots were ranked 14th in the final Top 30 poll. In the NCAA endof-the-season team rankings, the Patriots ranked in the top 50 of 13 different categories: including 29th in fielding percentage (.965), 39th in batting average (.333), and 42nd in team ERA (4.34). In 2008, FMU went 34-20, tied for third in the PBC regularseason standings, and ended the year ranked 27th. The Patriots ranked in the Top 20 nationally in six different statistical categories. The 2007 Patriot team was 36-18, placed third during the PBC regular season, and ended the year ranked 29th. Each of the those two seasons saw FMU narrowly miss out on a bid to the Division II national tournament.

In 2006, Inabinet directed the Patriots to a program-best 41-18 record, a No.6 national ranking, and the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II College World Series. The Patriots were ranked as high as third in the national poll during the 2006 campaign and spent seven weeks in the Top 10. FMU placed second in the Peach Belt regular-season standings. Following the 2006 season, Inabinet was selected as the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company Coach of the Year for the South Atlantic Region.
"Coach of the Year" for the NJCAA Region X, as the Mounties posted a 31-22 record and won the region title. Inabinet earned both the B.S. degree in history and the M.A.T. degree in secondary education (social sciences) from Winthrop University. As an undergraduate student, he was a four-year letterman on the Eagle baseball team. Following his playing career, he served as a graduate assistant coach at Winthrop from 1989 to 1991. He also was the head baseball coach at The Catawba School for one year (1992). Inabinet is director of the annual FMU Baseball Camp held during the summer. He is married to the former Kimberly Reese, and the couple has one child, Reese.
In 2005, he led FMU to a 34-16-1 record, a No. 14 national ranking, and an NCAA post-season invitation. During the 2005 campaign, he captured his 200th career win, and FMU's 34 wins was one shy of the then team record. Ten of the 16 losses were to nationally ranked opponents. FMU's team ERA of 3.11 was the lowest for a Patriot staff since 1980 and ranked eighth in NCAA II. The Patriots placed third in the PBC standings. In 2004, Inabinet guided the Patriots to a 29-17 record and a fifthplace finish during the PBC regular season. FMU won 10 of its final 11 contests and spent six weeks in the Division II Top 30 poll, including one week at No. 7, the program's then highest ranking ever. The team's ERA of 3.47 led the PBC and ranked 11th nationally. In 2003, he directed FMU to a 30-20 mark, a No. 18 national ranking, and a third-place finish at the NCAA's South Atlantic Regional. Picked to finish eighth in the PBC preseason coaches' poll, the Patriots finished third in the PBC with an 18-10 mark, only one-half game away from winning the program's first-ever conference title. The 18 conference wins were a team record. Playing an extremely tough schedule in 2003, FMU was 10-10 against Top-30 opponents. In Inabinet's first two seasons at the helm of the Patriots, FMU posted records of 24-27 in 2001 and 26-27 in 2002. Prior to joining the FMU staff in 1999, he served as head coach at North Greenville College for six seasons, recording a 155-122 mark (84-54 as a 4-year institution). He guided the Mounties program from junior college status to a four-year program in 1996. After making that transition, North Greenville was 14-21 in 1996, 34-17 in 1997, and 36-16 in 1998, including a pair of second-place finishes in the Mid-South Conference his last two years. Robbie Wilson begins his ninth season as assistant coach for the Patriot program. His responsibilities include working in the areas of hitting and fielding, as well as recruiting. He also serves as the university's coordinator of the Champs Life Skills program. Wilson, 35, has helped the Patriots to eight 30-win seasons, six NCAA Tournament invitations, and a spot in the final Top 30 poll each of the past eight campaigns (including four Top-10 rankings). Last season, Francis Marion finished 40-18, were ranked seventh nationally, and made a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament – where FMU reached the regional title game for the third consecutive season. In 2011, FMU posted a program-best 41-16 record, won the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship, and reached the title game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament. With Wilson in the first base coaching box, the 2006 FMU squad compiled a then program-best 4118 record, ended the year ranked sixth nationally, and made the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II College World Series. During the summers of 2007 and 2008, Wilson served as head coach of the Outer Banks Daredevils of the Coastal Plain League. He guided the Daredevils to a two-year mark of 48-58, and his 2008 squad earned a spot in the Petitt Cup Championship Tournament. During the summers of 2005 and 2006, he was the head coach of the Allegany Country Nitros of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. He guided the Nitros to a 27-23 record in 2006 and a spot in the league championship series. Prior to joing the FMU staff, Wilson spent the 2004 season as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University. The NCAA Division I Bulldogs compiled a 32-25 record and placed fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference final regular-season standings. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Wilson is a 1999 graduate of King College, where he was a four-year letterman on the baseball diamond. A center fielder, he was named his squad's most valuable player in 1999. He visited South Africa in 1998 as a member of an Athletes in Action squad. He also earned a master's degree from East Tennessee State University in 2002. He served as a graduate assistant at ETSU, instructing four collegiate-level physical education classes. Prior to taking the position at Gardner-Webb, he served as an assistant coach at King for three seasons (2000, 2001, 2002). An avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan, Wilson has also worked as sports editor and writer for The Chattanoogan.com, and spent one year as assistant to the general manager of the Johnson City Cardinals minor league baseball organization. He and his wife have a daughter (Hallie) and a son (Banks).
Former Patriot player Tyler Boyd is entering his first season with the Patriot staff as an assistant coach. His duties at FMU include working with hitters, outfielders and recruiting. Boyd, a native of Lamar, S.C., was a four-year starter in the outfield for the Patriots from 2009 to 2012. Boyd earned the B.A. degree in history in 2012. During his Patriot playing career, he appeared in 194 contests and hit .296 with 24 doubles, seven home runs, and 94 runs batted in. He registered a .366 on-base percentage, stole 16 bases in 21 attempts, and committed only four errors with 13 outfield assists. He helped lead the Patriots to a four-year mark of 159-63-1 and four trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. He is a graduate of Lamar High School and comes from a coaching family. At Lamar, he played for his dad J.R. Boyd. He earned All-State and All-Region honors in baseball and football as a senior. He batted .564 with 13 extra base hits, 22 runs, 28 RBIs as a senior and was a 2007 WPDE TV-15 AllZone Team member as a quarterback.
FMU PATRIOTS SUMMER CAMP Francis Marion University will hold two sessions of its annual Baseball Camp in 2013, June 17-21 and July 15-19. This camps provides the opportunity for young athletes to develop and polish their diamond skills. The camp is open to children ages 9-12, and runs from 9 a.m. until noon. Conducted by Francis Marion head baseball coach Art Inabinet, his staff, and members of the Patriot baseball team, the camp will stress learning basic game strategy and making the most of individual skills. Applications are now being accepted. The camp will cost $70 per session, if paid in advance, or $80 on the first day. Enrollment is limited. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium
Opened in the spring of 2012, the R. Gerald Griffin Athletic Complex houses the new home for Patriot baseball -- the new Clifford S. Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. The street address for the complex (GPS) is 4700 East Palmetto Street, Florence, SC 29506. The field is part of the $11.1 million west campus athletic complex that includes a lake, fieldhouse, softball stadium, and soccer stadium. One main ticket office -- on the east side -serves the entire complex. The baseball facility consists of 800 seats with capacity of 1,755, and includes concession area, restrooms, two VIP suites, and pressbox. The field dimensions are 330 feet down each line, 375 feet to the power alleys, and 400 feet to center center, with approximately the same foul territory as at old Cormell Field. Bullpens are located down each foul line, and the first phase of the fieldhouse is located adjacent to the bullpen down the right field line.

Old CLIFFORD S. CORMELL FIELD Named in honor of Florence businessman Clifford S. Cormell, Cormell Field was offically dedicated on March 5, 1974. Cormell was instrumental in helping establish Francis Marion University, and early on he served as cochairman of the Patriots Brigade (now known as the Swamp Fox Club). When opened, The ‘Cliff was one of only a handful of collegiate facilities with an astroturf infield. The astroturf was replaced by natual grass in the 1990’s. The dimensions of the field are 320 to right and left fields, 365 to the power alleys, and 400 to center field. Seating accomodates 400 spectators with standing room for up to 1,000. FMU lost that first game in 1974, 5-3 to the University of South Carolina before a standing room-only crowd. Francis Marion ended its run at this field with a 20770-1 mark in its final 278 home games. FMU beat Flagler College 2-1 on April 7, 2012, in the final contest before moving across the street to the new Comell Field at Sparrow Stadium in the Griffin Athletic Complex.

Francis Marion University is a member of the 14-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference (formerly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members include Armstrong Atlantic State University (in Savannah, Ga.), Augusta State University (Augusta, Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.), Flagler College (St. Augustine, Fla.), Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, Ga.), Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood, S.C.), University of Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.), North Georgia College & State University (Dahlonega, Ga.), UNC Pembroke, USC Aiken, and Young Harris College (Young Harris, Ga.). Formed in December 1989 and headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 15 sports, seven for men and eight for women. Of the 14 members, only Clayton State does not sponsor baseball. The Peach Belt Conference post-season baseball tournament will be held this year in Greenwood, S.C., May 8-12, 2013.

2012 SEASON RECAP - PATRIOT BASEBALL Francis Marion finished the 2012 year with a 40-18 record and made a fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament – where the Patriots reached the regional title game for the third consecutive season. FMU has posted 40-win campaigns each of the past three seasons. FMU was ranked seventh in the final 2012 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II Top 30 poll. ♦ Francis Marion earned the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Team Sportsmanship Award. ♦ FMU made its 4th straight NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance, 7th in the past 10 years, and 8th altogther. ♦ Former Patriot left-hander Josh Edgin became the first FMU product to reach the major leauges when he was called up following the All-Star Break by the New York Mets. Francis Marion stuns Gamescocks 5-4 in stadium debut FLORENCE, SC -Twentieth-ranked Francis Marion University plated all its runs with two outs and the Patriots held on for a 5-4 win over ninth-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Division I champion South Carolina, Wednesday evening (April 11) at the opening of the new Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium. Francis Marion improves to 27-13 and avenges in a way an earlier christening loss against USC (24-10). The Gamecocks rallied for a 5-3 win on March 5, 1974, at the official dedication of the Patriots' former facility, "old" Cormell Field. Wednesday, FMU sophomore right-hander Jeffrey Stoner induced a sharp line-out to right field by USC pinch-hitter Sean Sullivan for the final out with the tying run on second base to send the capacity crowd of 1,755 into a frenzy. The victory was the 400th at FMU for Patriot head coach Art Inabinet, now in his 12th season as head coach. Junior first baseman Stephen Tarkenton was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, while sophomore third baseman Michael Wilson and junior right fielder Jarrod Reed both collected a pair of hits. Junior first baseman Christian Walker led South Carolina with a 3-for-4 night that included an RBI single and a mammoth 372-foot solo homer to left field. Francis Marion broke up the scoreless contest with three runs in the bottom of the third. After South Carolina starter Adam Westmoreland (2-1) retired the first two batters of the inning, Wilson singled to left center. Senior outfielder Tyler Boyd extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a bunt single to the left of the mound. Junior second baseman Tyler Hibbs plated the first run at the new stadium with an RBI single to center field. Senior center fielder Buddy Sosnoskie followed with a run-scoring single to left center, and he took second on the unsuccessful throw to third. After a pitching change by USC, Hibbs scored the third run on a wild pitch by Patrick Sullivan. Walker got one run back with his solo shot in the top of the fourth. An RBI single up the middle by catcher Dante Rosenberg drew South Carolina to within 3-2 in the fifth. However with the tying run at second base, FMU senior southpaw Matt Broderick (6-1) got the third out by covering first on a ball that eluded Tarkenton at first and was flagged down by Hibbs in the hole between first and second. Broderick limited the Gamecocks to two runs on four hits in five frames, while striking out three and walking one. Junior Patriot righty Don Sandifer then held the Gamecocks at bay with two scoreless and hitless innings. FMU added a pair of two-out runs in the seventh to go up 5-2. Wilson reached on a fielder's choice grounder, stole second, and moved to third after back-to-back walks to Hibbs and Sosnoskie. Tarkenton then poked an 0-1 pitch from Evan Beal up the middle to plate Wilson and Hibbs. Walker's run-scoring single in the top of the eighth cut the margin to 5-3, but Stoner stranded two runners by fanning Joey Pankake. In the ninth, pinch hitter Kyle Martin got the Gamecocks to within 5-4 with an RBI groundout, but Stoner got the final out to earn his second save of 2012.
