Paterson, N.J he former mayor of Paterson, N.J., was sentenced to five years in state prison on Tuesday (Nov 14) for second-degree conspiracy to commit official misconduct. Jose “Joey” Torres, 59, agreed to resign as mayor of New Jersey’s third-largest city when he pleaded guilty in September. Prosecutors say he instructed city employees to perform work at a property leased by his daughter and nephew. A tearful former mayor of New Jersey's third-largest city apologized before a judge sentenced him to five years in prison. As part of a plea deal, the judge also ordered former Torres to forfeit future public employment and pay the city $10,000. "I wholly regret," Torres said before he paused to compose himself, "my lack of judgment or judgment that led me to these charges. I'm sorry." He said he was remorseful and embarrassed. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," Torres said, sobbing. "That's it your honor."

t began as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest from the preceding year. On Nov. 23, millions of Americans will be celebrating another “Thanksgiving Day,” not just as a holiday, but as a time for sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying good food with family and friends. Thanksgiving is now one of the busiest holidays. Just about every American family gather around the dining table to chow down on an assortment of colorful and tasty home-cooked meals and to give thanks for the good fortunes in their personal and family lives. But there is also the commercialized side of this iconic American holiday that signals the start of the Christmas shopping season.

From grocery stores, food suppliers and dairy farmers to small mom-andpop shops and large corporations, the potential for sizable profit margin is limitless. Catering activities soar because not everyone cooks their own Thanksgiving meal. This holiday period is also a popular time for companies, individuals, and other groups to host holiday parties. Other industries such as food, retail and travel also stand to earn billion of dollars in sales and they bombard consumes with an avalanche of promotions.

In essence, opportunities to sell a wide range of goods and services are endless as millions of energized and exu b e r a n t consumers splurge to impress families and friends. H o w e v e r, not many entrepreneurs and small business operators in our communities are taking full advantages of the vast spending power of our people. For example, our restaurants, hair salons, nightclubs and groceries stores could do more to attract or to appeal to customers during Thanksgiving. tactical. Someone must supply the goods and deliver the services during the holidays. Why not you as a business operator? It has been a very challenging year, as most businesses continue to face increased operational costs and poor income from sales. Therefore, companies must adopt aggressive revenue generation strategies as the most cost effective way to boost sales. Nevertheless, we want to maintain the traditional spirit of Thanksgiving by urging everybody to reach out to the less prosperous among us. People Are Talking...! Ethical leadership increases trust and commitment

eadership is often linked with improved organizational performance, because this approach to leadership is more effective for motivating followers. In organizations, followers tend to perceive ethical leaders as concerned not only about achieving organizational objectives but about the interests of multiple organizational stakeholders. In contrast, followers tend to perceive unethical leaders as focused on short-term results and uncaring about the interests of others. Ethical leadership can contribute to positive performance regardless of the type of organization. The financial performance of firms stating and demonstrating a leadership commitment to ethics is better than firms that do not emphasize ethical leadership. Research has indicated that firms committed to ethical behavior among leadership tend to outperform peers over the long run. These firms tend to have lower costs created by unethical behavior, such as litigation over contract breaches or employee theft. It is also less likely that the firms will be subjected to governmental enforcement actions for violation of various laws and regulations. Ethical leadership behavior can also foster greater confidence among customers, which can lead to higher sales. From the perspective of commercial firms, ethical leadership is necessary to improve competitive positioning. Some research evidence has also suggested that ethical leadership improves organizational performance by increasing trust and commitment among employees. Organizational commitment is the relative strength of an individual’s identification and involvement with an organization.

If individuals have high levels of organizational commitment, they are more likely to adopt organizational goals as their own and be self-motivated to achieve the goals. At the same time, leaders can more easily exert influence when the members of an organization trust them. In theory, ethical leadership fosters the perception among organizational members that the leaders are

NEWARK, N.J: Bronx man on Nov 6 admitted his role in an extensive scheme to obtain money through fraudulently obtained refund checks issued by the U.S. Treasury, Acting U.S., Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced. Hector Urena pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez in Newark federal court to an information charging him with one count each of conspiracy to steal government funds, theft of government funds, and aggravated identity theft (Count Three). According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court: Stolen Identity Refund Fraud (SIRF) is a common type of fraud committed against the United States government that involves the use of stolen identities to commit tax refund fraud. SIRF schemes generally share a number of hallmarks. Perpetrators obtain personal identifying information, including Social Security numbers and dates of birth, from unwitting individuals, who often reside in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. They then complete Form 1040 tax returns using the fraudulently obtained information and falsifying wages earned, taxes withheld, and other data, always ensuring that the fraudulent tax return generates a refund. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2018.

A biofuel created by blending oil extracted from coffee waste with diesel is to be added to the public transport fuel supply. Technology firm bio-bean says it has produced enough coffee oil to power one bus for a year. Transport for London (TfL) has increasingly turned to using biofuels to reduce transport emissions. Will buses be run on coffee in future? Biofuel made using waste products such as cooking oil and tallow from meat processing is already used in many of the capital's 9,500 buses.

Mugabe not quitting

R

HARARE, ZIMBABWE: obert Mugabe has vowed to stay in power as President of Zimbabwe for several weeks, despite mounting calls for him to quit immediately. In a live TV address, Mr Mugabe said he would preside over the governing party's congress in December. Zanu-PF earlier sacked him as party leader, and gave him less than 24 hours to resign as president or be impeached. His grip on power has weakened since the military intervened on Wednesday, in a row over who should succeed him. The crisis began when the 93-year-old president sacked his deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, two weeks ago, angering army commanders who saw it as an attempt to position his wife as his successor. Crowds had gathered in Harare to watch

the speech, with Mr Mugabe widely expected to resign. Instead though, flanked by military generals, he said "the (ruling Zanu-PF) party congress is due in a few weeks and I will preside over its processes". President Mugabe acknowledged criticism from Zanu-PF, the military and public, and stressed the need to return Zimbabwe to normality. "Whatever the pros and cons of how they (the army) went about their operation, I, as commander-in-chief, do acknowledge their concerns," he said, in reference to the army's move last week to take over the state broadcaster. The BBC's Africa Editor, Fergal Keane, said his understanding of the situation was that Mr Mugabe had agreed to resign, but then changed his mind.

By Douglas Mcintosh KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS): Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, has called for the strengthening of relations between Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states and nonEnglish-speaking countries across the Caribbean and Latin America. He was speaking at the closing panel discussion on ‘Challenges and Opportunities in the Caribbean’ at the sixth International Monetary Fund (IMF) High Level Caribbean Forum in New Kingston on Thursday, November 17. The prime minister was supported in his call by Grenada’s prime minister, Dr Keith Mitchell, and The Bahamas’ deputy prime minister and finance minister, Peter Turnquest. Holness, who indicated that he is a “big proponent” of full Caribbean integration, argued that significant benefits can be derived from stronger relations between CARICOM countries and countries such as the Dominion Republic, Haiti and Cuba. He said Jamaica is actively pursuing a policy of outreach and engagement with the Spanish-speaking countries within the region. “I have paid an official visit to the Dominican Republic (with which) we are pursuing a joint tourism agreement… and we have done the same with Cuba,” he pointed out. “There is a huge market in Latin America, which Jamaica has to tap into… and I think the rest of the Caribbean has to do the same. For us, I think there is greater advantage with us reaching out,” he added. While acknowledging that “language is a barrier”, Holness maintained that “it is in our interest that we have the policies to support our people speaking a second language, in particular Spanish and French”. Mitchell, for his part, said much is already taking place towards integrating non-English-speaking countries. He pointed out that Haiti will be the next chair of CARICOM, while Martinique has been admitted as an associate member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Additionally, he said Guadeloupe has applied for Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) membership “and most likely will be admitted, so I think there is some significant movement in that regard; we are moving in the right direction”. Turnquest also agreed that CARICOM needs to do more to support and integrate non-English-speaking countries. He noted that opportunities often available to English-speaking territories are invariably not afforded to the other countries “because of the fact that they are isolated, in some respects, because of the language issues”.

The Attorney General's Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau filed a lawsuit in May against Barrone and her company, NYS Prisoner Assistance Center, also known as NY Parole Aids. The suit charged her with bilking hundreds of people, including prison inmates and their families, out of thousands of dollars by purporting to handle administrative parole appeals and other legal matters. "Deceiving vulnerable New Yorkers into paying for unlicensed legal services is reprehensible, costing them thousands each and jeopardizing their rights," said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. "My office won't hesitate to prosecute those who defraud New Yorkers by practicing without a license." Although Barrone is not an attorney, she advertised an array of legal services on the company website and charged thousands of dollars to provide legal services, according to papers filed by the Attorney General's office. The services included filing administrative and judicial appeals on behalf of inmates who were denied parole by the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and representing inmates at administrative hearings and individuals facing criminal charges in various state courts. In some cases, Barrone accepted fees but did not perform any services. In August, Albany County Supreme Court Acting Justice Gerald W. Connolly ordered Barrone and the NYS Prisoner Assistance Center to pay a $244,500 penalty to the state as well as full restitution of $23,427.70 to consumers who paid for legal services. The judgment also prohibits Barrone from practicing law without a license or advertising or selling legal or paralegal services. The Attorney General's Criminal Enforcement and Financial Crimes Bureau also launched a criminal investigation into Barrone's conduct. On Oct. 16, Barrone was arrested and arraigned in Albany City Court before Judge Holly A. Trexler on a felony complaint filed by the Attorney General's office charging: five counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, two counts of third-degree grand larceny, one count of fourth-degree grand larceny, one count of unauthorized practice of a profession, and one count of scheme to defraud. CONCACAF Nations League set to start next September C

ONCACAF president Victor Montagliani has announced that the highly-anticipated Nations League is set to begin in September 2018. The Canadian says this event will serve as a qualifier for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup which will include all 41 members in the region. He says this tournament is being introduced so that even the smaller Caribbean nations can get more matches in a calendar year. The governing body for football in the region will release the schedule of details in February.

By Sportsmax orld’s fastest man Usain Bolt has resumed training after being given the go-ahead from his doctor having fully recovered from a hamstring injury. Having retired from the sport of track and field in the summer, the 31-year-old has confirmed that he will begin his odyssey into the sport of football, a discipline he has long admired from the sidelines. Bolt, who recently missed out on an appearance as a specially invited guest of Manchester United legends team after suffering an injury at the World Championship, has already begun training in Australia but, has confirmed he will return to Jamaica where he will continue training with the country’s national coach.

The runner has been invited to train with Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, but remains unsure if he will take up the offer. “It’s something that I want to do. I’m trying to get fit now,” Bolt said of playing professional football. “My doctor finally passed me after my hamstring problems at the world championships, so now I can start training. I’ve started training while I’m here (Australia) and trying to get into shape before I get home and next year I’ll get a trial and we’ll take it from there,” he added. “When I put my mind to something, I’m going to do it. I’m going to train hard, put myself through some drills. Coach of the team in Jamaica – I’ll do some work with him also to figure out the finer details.”

New Yorkers raving about 'Blue & Bougie' all inclusive party

By Anthony Turner Contributing Writer

ew Rochelle has joined the list of elite cities that are now hosting upscale, all inclusive Jamaican theme parties with the recently launched Blue and Bougie fall event at the posh Radisson Hotel ballroom in New Rochelle. While the event does not yet boast exotic frills like cabanas and elevated multilevel sponsor booths, event organizers are clearly on to something special based on feedback from patrons. The mouthwatering Jamaica dishes which were specially prepared by celebrity Chef Jarrett, who was flown in first class from Jamaica, was sumptuous. The ambience was bougie, while the music...ah the music, it was off the hook with DJs Icopsycho, Rickly Genius, and DJ Roy & Stretch from Road International turning the heat way up. In between the musical juggling, New York based Royal Khaoz band had patrons in a tizzy, as lead vocalist Bama belted out a variety of traditional reggae selections including cover songs by Chronixx, Beres Hammond and Stephen Marley. Chef Jarrett, who has worked at the luxurious RITZ Carlton Hotel in Montego Bay and as an executive chef on the Disney Cruise line said, "I am happy to be invited to showcase my culinary skills for this exclusive, upscale party. Everyone enjoyed the dishes we prepared." Among the VIP guests attending the shindig were 'First Lady,' Sonia Harvey, mother of Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness; Damion & Omar Hawthorne, sons of Lowell Hawthorne, CEO of Golden

What people say about Thanksgiving? I

Anthony Turner, Freelance Journalist: Thanksgiving is an extraordinary time to give thanks to the Lord for all he has blessed us with. It's about getting together with family and close friends.

Trevor Dalling, Real Estate Broker: Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and be appreciative of your family and God.

Kadia-loy Knight, Media Personality: This was a day when we recognized those who have impacted our lives in a significant way. Giving thanks to those contributing to our present achievement.

Tina Chin, Blogger and Author: Thanksgiving draws family closer. It is the only time of year that most people find it possible to hang out with members of their families.

Kimmy Maitland, Student: The celebration of gratitude should always be something that is placed in high regards. Taking a moment to appreciate the things we have should not be limited to one day. Therefore show immense love to those who genuinely take care of you at all times.

Audrey Murray, Life Coach: Most grateful this year for the health, wealth and a beautiful daughter that keeps me striving for bigger and better. We are starting our own Thanksgiving tradition this year, by cooking together at home and giving back to a local community cause.

n America, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, so this year will be on November 23. The modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is traced to a sparsely documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts, and also to a well recorded 1619 event in Virginia. The USA isn't the only nation to mark celebrations - Canada, Puerto Rico, Grenada and Liberia do so too. The tradition has continued for hundreds of years since and is celebrated with a lots of delicious food and wine. A typical Thanksgiving menu consists of roast turkey, roasted sweet potato casserole and winter vegetables - a plate that resembles a British Christmas dinner.

PREPARING A MOUTHWATERING

Grace Jerk Turkey For Thanksgiving

F

or many decades, the turkey has been the hallmark of Thanksgiving celebrations on dinner tables across the United States. But if the truth be told, Jamaicans have never been wholly enthusiastic about the traditional bird, and recently our chefs and our home cooks have been experimenting with an exciting new Thanksgiving idea that is winning raves across the country- the jerk turkey! Since Thanksgiving is almost here, I asked the very talented and creative chef, Alton Henry, who is based in Newark, New Jersey to point us to his recipe for creating a most mouthwatering Grace jerk turkey for the holiday. Here's what he shared. Brining is a pretreatment in which the whole turkey to placed in a salt and water solution known as brine. This pretreatment produces a wonderfully moist and well-seasoned bird. Brining should be done in the refrigerator or in a cooler with 5 to 6 ice packs to keep the turkey and brine at 40 degrees or below during the entire brining process. Brining is more manageable with a rather small turkey from 12 to 14 pounds. Table salt or kosher salt can be used to make the brine. Crystal kosher salt is recommended since table salt contains additives such as anti-caking ingredients, iodine and other additives. Table salt is also very finely ground and more is required to produce good results. Ingredients The brine 3 cups kosher salt 2 gallons of cold water 1 cup vinegar 1/2 cup of sugar The marinade 3 Tablespoons Grace Jerk Marinade 2 Tablespoons cooking oil 1 Tablespoons Grace Browning Combine all ingredients (If desired a more spicy bird , add four tablespoon of Grace Jerk Marinade.)

1. Start the brining method the day before you plan to cook the turkey. Start with a fresh or completely thawed turkey. Wash the bird inside and out and remove the giblet bag and neck. 2. In a large stockpot, plastic tub or cooler dissolve 3 cups kosher salt or 11/2 cup table salt in 2 gallons cold water. Add 1/2 cup sugar and 1 cup vinegar. Stir until the salt and sugar are completely dissolved. Water will look clear, not cloudy.

3. Herbs and spices may be added to brine to enhance the flavor. Add several crushed allspice seeds, several sprigs of dried thyme, or other dried herbs, if desired.

Grace Jerk Turkey

4. Place the turkey in the brine solution, breast down. Cover and chill for 6 to 8 hours. Or use the overnight method by reducing the salt and sugar amounts by 1/2 so the turkey does not retain too much salt. 5. Remove the turkey from brine, rinse inside and out under cold running water. Pat dry with paper towels. Place on a shallow pan and refrigerate overnight. This allows the skin to dry out so it becomes crisp during roasting. This step may be omitted if desired. 6. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place turkey on shallow roasting pan. Season the turkey inside and outside with the Jerk marinade .Tie legs together and tuck wings underneath the bird. Add 1 cup water to bottom of pan and place in the oven. Let turkey get a beautiful golden brown color, then cover with aluminum foil. 7. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of the turkey. Check the wrapper to see how much the turkey weighs and determine the approximate cooking time (see chart). Roast the turkey until temperature in the innermost thickest part of the thigh reaches 165 °F as measured with a food thermometer. Check the internal temperature in the wing and the thickest part of the breast as well. The temperature in all parts should read 165 °F or higher. The thigh juices should run clear when pierced with a fork. 8. During the last 1/2 hours of cooking time remove the aluminum foil and baste with pan juices. Add more water to the pan if necessary. 9. A 12-pound turkey will take about 2 and 1/2 hours to roast. 10. Enjoy a Tasty, Most and Delicious Grace Jerk Turkey.

Visit PorkBeinspired.com for more pork cooking inspiration this holiday season. Honey Balsamic-Glazed Ham with Smashed Potatoes Recipe courtesy of Jose Mendin, Pubbelly Noodle Bar, on behalf of the National Pork Board

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Servings: 8

1 3-pound boneless ham, netting removed and casing trimmed off 1/2 cup water

Honey Balsamic Glaze: 1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple (2/3 cup pineapple, 1/3 cup juice) 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme

(or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme) 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Smashed Potatoes: 3 pounds small red potatoes, scrubbed but unpeeled 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (or 1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley)

Make the Honey Balsamic Glaze: In a small heavy saucepan, bring ingredients to a boil over high heat, stirring often.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring often, until the liquid is reduced by about half, 7-10 minutes. Transfer to small bowl and let cool to room temperature. Preheat oven to 350 F. Using a sharp knife, score ham in a crosshatch pattern. Place ham in roasting pan and add 1/2 cup water. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and spread half of the glaze over the ham, forcing it into the scored cuts. Bake for 15 minutes. Repeat with remaining glaze and bake until a meat thermometer inserted into the center of the ham reads 140 F, about 15 minutes more. If necessary, to keep glaze from scorching, tent ham with aluminum foil. Let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes before slicing. Make the Smashed Potatoes: After about 30 minutes of baking the ham, place potatoes in large saucepan and add enough cold, salted water to cover by 2 inches. Cover saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Uncover and reduce heat to medium. Cook until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain well and return potatoes to saucepan. Add butter, oil, salt and pepper, and crush with a large fork then stir in the parsley. Partially cover with the lid to keep warm. Slice the ham crosswise and serve with the smashed potatoes.

FAMILY FEATURES: hen temperatures plummet, a seasonal wardrobe change helps protect most of your body from the elements. However, your face and hands are likely still exposed and even areas protected by clothing can be affected by a harsh climate. A fall skin-care regimen can help ensure your delicate features fare well even as blustery winds blow. Sunscreen smarts. Most people know that slathering on the sunscreen is a must when heading to the pool or beach, but your skin can actually take a hit from the sun’s damaging rays year-around. Apply a sunscreen lotion or moisturizer containing SPF daily to reduce the risk and minimize your chances of sun spots and wrinkles. Healthy hydration. When it’s hot, you’re more likely to feel thirsty and drink more, but staying well hydrated is important in colder weather, too. Proper hydration affects numerous body functions, such as ensuring your muscles and joints are well lubricated and helping your body to regulate its temperature. Water is the solution most experts recommend, but non-sugary options like tea can also help. Food factors. Although limiting the amount of fat you consume is generally recommended for a nutritious eating plan, in the fall and winter it’s especially important to be sure you’re consuming enough healthy fats and omega-3s to promote moisture from the inside out. Good sources include eggs, nuts, avocados and lean proteins like fish, turkey, chicken and beef. Clothing concerns. Even if you don’t feel the chill, cold wind can do a number on your skin. Be sure to cover up adequately when outdoors to prevent the chapping and irritation that can come from sustained exposure. Also be wary of precipitation; be sure your outer layers repel

Also skip the temptation to warm up in a hot shower, which can dry your skin even further. Manage moisture. Even oilier skin types may need extra moisture when dry, cold conditions prevail. Oil-free options let you add moisture without overstimulating oil glands, while natural oils such as coconut or jojoba are ideal for dryer skin. Apply lotion after every shower to trap in moisture and as needed throughout the day to prevent chapping and cracking, and give special attention to areas that are prone to damage, such as your lips and hands. Bronx Man admits role in stolen identity refund fraud scheme

A

NEWARK, N.J: Bronx man on Nov 6 admitted his role in an extensive scheme to obtain money through fraudulently obtained refund checks issued by the U.S. Treasury, Acting U.S., Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced. Hector Urena pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez in Newark federal court to an information charging him with one count each of conspiracy to steal government funds, theft of government funds, and aggravated identity theft (Count Three). Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2018.

When Love is not enough

18 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • NOV 19-30, 2017

T

By Mark Manson he problem with idealizing love is that it causes us to develop unrealistic expectations about what love actually is and what it can do for us. These unrealistic expectations then sabotage the very relationships we hold dear in the first place. THREE HARSH TRUTHS ABOUT LOVE 1. Love does not equal compatibility. Just because you fall in love with someone doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a good partner for you to be with over the long term. Love is an emotional process; compatibility is a logical process and the two don’t bleed into one another very well. It’s possible to fall in love with somebody who doesn’t treat us well, who makes us feel worse about ourselves, who doesn’t hold the same respect for us as we do for them, or who has such a dysfunctional life themselves that they threaten to bring us down with them. When dating and looking for a partner, you must use not only your heart, but your mind. Yes, you want to find someone who makes your heart flutter and your farts smell like cherry popsicles. But you also need to evaluate a person’s values, how they treat themselves, how they treat those close to them, their ambitions and their worldviews in general. Because if you fall in love with some-

one who is incompatible with you…well, as the ski instructor from South Park once said, you’re going to have a bad time.

2. Love does not solve your relationship problems. My first girlfriend and I were madly in love with each other. We also lived in different cities, had no money to see each other, had families who hated each other, and went through weekly bouts of meaningless drama and fighting and every time we fought, we’d come back to each other the next day and make up and remind each other how crazy we were about one another and that none of those little things matter because we’re omg so in love and we’ll find a way to work it out and everything will be great, just you wait and see. Our love made us feel like we were overcoming our issues, when on a practical level, absolutely nothing had changed. This is how a toxic relationship works. The roller coaster of emotions are intoxicating, each high feeling even more important and more valid than the one before, but unless there’s a stable and practical foundation beneath your feet, that rising tide of emotion will eventually come and wash it all away. 3. Love is not always worth sacrificing yourself. One of the defining characteristics of loving someone is that you are able to think outside of

yourself and your own needs to help care for another person and their needs as well. But the question that doesn’t get asked often enough is exactly what are you sacrificing, and is it worth it? A loving relationship is supposed to supplement our individual identity, not damage it or replace it. If we find ourselves in situations where we’re tolerating disrespectful or abusive behavior, then that’s essentially what we’re doing: we’re allowing our love to consume us and negate us, and if we’re not careful, it will leave us as a shell of the person we once were. Remember this: The only way you can fully enjoy the love in your life is to choose to make something else more important in your life than love. You can fall in love with a wide variety of people throughout the course of your life. You can fall in love with people who are good for you and people who are bad for you. You can fall in love in healthy ways and unhealthy ways. You can fall in love when you’re young and when you’re old.

6 Things to Consider Before Buying a New Computer

B

uying a computer is no easy task, and with the cost of many of the machines out on the market today, you want to make sure you’re making the right purchase so you don’t blow your money on something that stops meeting your demands within a year. This guide should help you get a better understanding of what all the components of the computer will mean for you and make it easier to decide what you want, need, and which elements to prioritize. That way, you’ll be better equipped to get the right computer for you, and to avoid spending any more money than you must.

Operating system According to April 2015 research by NetMarketShare, various versions of Microsoft® Windows make up 90 percent of the operating system market share, so that’s likely the right choice for your business. Windows 7 is the most popular at 58 percent, with the Windows 8.1 netting 11 percent of users. (Owners of machines using Windows 7 and 8.1 qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 10.) Versions of the Mac OS earned just 6 percent of the market share. Some industries favor one operating system over another, but the most important consideration is usability, since Microsoft makes Mac versions of its popular Windows software.

less important than it used to be. While internal storage is the fastest way to retrieve data (with solid-state drives being even faster than hard disk drives), network-attached storage and cloud drives are gaining popularity because they allow remote access. USBconnected external drives are an easy way to keep information handy, and even transfer it to another machine later.

Processor Processing power is all about speed, so get the fastest one you can afford. That makes your life easier if you’re doing standard business functions, but it’s a mission-critical factor if you’re working with huge files like music, video or big data. Time spent waiting on the computer to do its thing is time wasted.

Memory RAM (random access memory) is what your computer uses to run programs. Buy as much memory as you can to ensure you’ve got the power to run programs efficiently and more than one at a time. As software matures, it inevitably requires more RAM — even if all you do is surf the web — so choose a computer with easy access to RAM so you can add more as needed. That’s a lot

cheaper and easier than buying an entirely new machine. Hard drive With the proliferation of highspeed Internet and cloud services, onboard storage capacity is much

Monitor The big-screen craze isn’t limited only to televisions. Many people like working on huge computer monitors — and sometimes more than one. An external monitor is also nice if you’re using a Chromebook, Ultrabook or convertible — but give them a test drive to make sure the resolution is suitable.

Risk factor Laptops are great computers for getting work done wherever you need to — in the office, at a conference table or on a plane. But their portability can put them at risk. Whether taken from a desk in your workplace or left in a cab, lost or stolen laptops have the potential to cause big damage to your business. Though both laptops and desktops are easily hacked, it’s definitely harder to misplace or make off with a desktop unit. So if you’re risk averse, a laptop may not be for you. Combine your wants and needs for computing functionality with these six additional considerations and you’ll take a lot of the guesswork out of choosing the right computer.

7 Ways to Plan for Cold and Flu Season

(Family Features) eclining temperatures can bring fun, cool-weather activities, but they also mean cold and flu season is lurking. While everyone hopes to stay healthy, it can be difficult to completely avoid viruses and bugs. Dr. Deborah Gilboa, a board-certified family physician and Braun spokesperson, offers some simple suggestions to help your family plan for cold and flu season.

“As a doctor and a mom to four boys, it gives me the confidence to know that I’m accurately taking my child’s temperature before I take any next steps, like administering medication.”

Stock Up Before cold and flu season, make sure to stockpile must-haves like ginger ale, ice pops and recommended cough suppressants. Thinking ahead means you won’t have to rush out when you or a family member comes down with something.

Manage Humidity Levels Control your home’s humidity levels with a humidifier to help prevent the survival of flu viruses on surfaces and in the air.

Have Important Information on Hand To save time when your child is ill, keep a reference of your child’s allergies, prescribed medications, dosage amounts and current weight handy. Health care providers typically need this information to correctly prescribe and dose most medications. Other items to keep on-hand include school sick day policies, operating manuals for medical devices and a reference of temperature readings that classify a fever.

Dispose of Expired Medicine Spend some time checking the medications you already have at home. Review the expiration dates and if any need to be thrown out, research how to properly dispose of them according to local government guidelines.

Practice Healthy Habits Encourage the entire family to maintain healthy habits such as regular hand washing, following a nutritious diet, drinking plenty of water, and coughing or sneezing into a tissue to help minimize the spread of cold and flu viruses. Use a Reliable Thermometer Reading the temperature of a person who feels ill can help provide confidence and peace of mind. Make sure you have a reliable thermometer like the Braun Ther-

moScan 5 Ear thermometer, which takes professionally accurate temperature readings via the ear canal and, based on a survey, is the number 1 brand recommended by pediatricians who recommend a brand of thermometers.

“It’s important to carefully monitor potential illnesses to make sure children get and stay well, and taking an accurate temperature reading is a necessary part of this process, which is why I trust my Braun thermometer,” Gilboa said.

Keep Contact Information Accessible Keep a list of important phone numbers and addresses inside your medicine cabinet door or on the fridge so they’re easily accessible to family members, babysitters and caretakers. Include your family doctor or local clinic, schools, pharmacists and anyone else you may need to reach in an emergency. If cold or flu reach your household this winter, it’s always important to consult a doctor if you have any questions regarding the health of your family members. Five tips for creating a business plan Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business

nce you’ve settled on a business model that meets your needs, developing a business plan is an essential next step. These five tips can help you get started:

• Think long-term. A solid business plan should account for your start-up, of course, but also the longer range future of your operations. Consider how you want your business to look five years down the road. Create goals and build in milestones to chart your progress on that long-term path.

• Write it yourself. No one can embrace your vision as completely as you can and developing the plan yourself gives you a deep understanding of every aspect of the business, which is essential for good management. Even if you hand over certain responsibilities down the road, being aware of each aspect of your business can make you a stronger, more successful leader. • Review the plan over time. Know that time brings change. The business climate and other variables that influenced your

original plan will likely shift over the course of your ownership. That’s why it’s important to revisit your plan at least annually to ensure your original roadmap is still on the right track strategically. • Share your plan with others. Inviting input from an adviser or experienced friend or colleague is a great way to spur new ideas and identify potential problem areas. Be sure you’re prepared to accept constructive criticism to help

shape the best possible business plan.

• Stick to it. After all the sweat equity you invest in creating your business plan, the worst thing you can do is allow it to collect dust on a shelf. Use the plan to guide you in launching and growing your business. When business is booming and you’re too busy to think strategically, you’ll be grateful to have a well-conceived plan to rely upon.

Tips For Growing Business

1. Get Organized To be successful in business you need to be organized. Organization will help you complete tasks and stay on top of things to be done. A good way to do this is to create a to-do list each day - as you complete each item, check it off your list. This will ensure that you're not forgetting anything and you're completing all the tasks that are essential to the survival of your business. 2. Keep Detailed Records All successful businesses keep detailed records. By keeping detailed records, you'll know where the business stands financially and what potential challenges you could be facing. Just knowing this gives you time to create strategies to overcome the obstacles that can prevent you from being successful and growing your business.

Don’t Fall Victim to Financial Distress Caused by Credit Card Debt Credit counseling is the easiest, most effective way to explore the options for credit card debt and identify the best solution for your needs.

HIGH MONTHLY CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS combined with even higher interest rates can make it almost impossible to maintain control over your credit card debt. Even with your monthly payments you may not see much of a reduction in debt no matter what you do. What’s more, as your credit card balances increase, it can also cause problems for your budget – you end up juggling bills, choosing between expenses, and putting off important purchases. Luckily, there’s a way you can find the solution that works for your unique financial situation – and even better, it won’t cost a thing to get the information you need.

CREDIT COUNSELING IS THE EASIEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO EXPLORE THE OPTIONS FOR CREDIT CARD DEBT AND IDENTIFY THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDS. Speak with a certified credit counselor at no charge to analyze your debt and budget. They will review your options to see what solutions may work best for you. Your credit counselor may be able to lower high interest rates or even eliminate them while consolidating your credit card debts into one easy payment through a debt management program. Get Out of Debt Faster As a result of those lower interest rates – more of your monthly pay-

ments go toward your debt instead of adding more interest – which means you can get out of debt faster. Every financial situation is different, but most people see their total monthly debt payments reduced by up to 30 to 50 percent as they get out of debt faster. The program is usually completed in around 40-60 payments, so you can be debt-free in just a few years instead of taking decades to eliminate everything you owe.

It’s the fastest and easiest to get professional financial advice without incurring another bill to do it. Build a Positive Credit History Additionally, consolidating debtthrough a certified credit counseling service may help save your credit score from additional damage. You stop future penalties and prevent further damage from missed payments and overdrawn credit lines. Even better, as you work your way through the program,

you’re able to build a positive credit history while reducing your overall debt level. As a result, some people see their credit score even increase over the course of their time with a credit counseling service. FREEDOM FROM DEBT IS POSSIBLE! Don’t spend another sleepless night worrying about your debt problems, or another day stressed about your bills instead of focused on your family and life.

Call Consolidated Credit now at

1-800-721-4370 to speak with a certified credit counselor today.

(Fees may apply for voluntary participation in debt management - all counseling services are free.)

22 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • NOV 19-30, 201 AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): "To fight or not to fight" may be the question of the day for you. Your sensitive, feminine side is likely to say one thing while your masculine, warring side is apt to say another. The key is for you to not act too hastily in any situation.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): New friends could come your way today, and you might well feel that you've known them all your life. Close bonds may be formed quickly, as communication flows freely between you. Make sure, however, that you don't make too many commitments to anyone at this time, as you could spread yourself too thin, and you also aren't in the proper frame of mind to discriminate.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Seek the counsel of someone older and wiser today. Whether you want to or not, you just may encounter someone with authority over you who is likely to tell you how they think. Heed the advice that comes to you from others. You will find that there is a whole other perspective out there that needs to be taken into account in order to bring things back to a status of equilibrium. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some close friends, or perhaps the man in your life, may suddenly propose taking a trip together - definitely by air, and possibly to a distant state or country. You like to be spontaneous, and are therefore open to the possibility and ready to make definite plans. Make sure, however, that the others involved are really serious about it before you charge on

CANCER (June 21-July 22): There is a practical grounding to the day that may be cramping your style. More than likely, you will feel restrained by the restriction of time that is asking you to be more aware of your own limits. It could be that you are not being realistic about certain areas of your life. These things will become clear today as things progress.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You could be feeling sluggish today. Your desk could be piled high with papers that need attending to. No matter how much you push yourself, it still could be difficult to get everything done. Try to be realistic and just focus on the tasks that need to be finished today. Other, less essential things, you might want to leave for tomorrow.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Today you might have to focus on your obligations to other people. Maybe you should spend some time babysitting. You might enjoy taking care of your niece or your nephew for a bit. Or your spouse might need your help with something around the house. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You might not see eye-to-eye with someone today. Sometimes you can get swept up in passionate opinions. It's easy for you to believe that your way is right and the other person's way is wrong! But things aren't quite so black and white right now. Today you might need to look for gray areas.
