Jamaican Business Men US Visa Revoked By Kimmy Blair Street Hype Writer

S

everal leading Jamaican business people and entrepreneurs had their US visa revoked in recent times for alleged corrupt activities. Last Friday, United States Ambassador to Jamaica Donald Tapia confirmed the allegations while speaking on Jamaica's Radio Jamaica's Hotline program. Ambassador Tapia said the US has been targeting persons, including members of the private sector and business people, who are involved in corruption. "Many times, I notice that the papers and the media zero in on government. But you must keep in mind that corruption within the private sector is at the highest levels and they are dealing in illicit goods. We will be looking at them and targeting them also," he declared, noting that the

Jamaican government has been "very, very cooperative in working with us and us working with them." Tapia declined to provide details when asked about the recent visa revocations but told Hotline host Emily Shields that "there's some people that better be more capable of getting a visa going to China than it would be to come to the United States." He also declined to comment on how many people have been affected by the recent visa revocations. But probed further by Shields, the ambassador admitted: "I don't know... I do know of some, but I do not know of the total." In the meantime, Ambassador Tapia said progress is being made to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU with the Andrew Holness led administration to stamp out corruption at the island's ports. CARIBBEAN NEWS US announces visa restrictions on Guyana's Election riggers

EDITORIAL Be prepared for a second spike in the COVID-19 cases

W

ith the steady decline in hospitalizations in New York since March 18, 2020, and the reported less than 1% positive cases of COVID-19 tests as of now. The question is- is New York City becoming Coronavirus free or should we anticipate another spike in the fall season (colder months) New York City is now transitioning into phase four of re-opening and according to Governor Cuomo-this includes outdoor venues and activities such as zoos, outdoor film production, and professional sports without fans in the stands, excluding indoor dining, museums, and malls that are deemed to be too high a risk for exposure of the virus. However, many other states such as Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and more are facing worse times with the increase in Covid-19 cases- since their re-opening. Therefore, although we are moving in stages in re-opening New York, we will still have to take the necessary precautions not to allow a spike again. On the other hand, there is an increase in food distribution and food pantries across the Tri-State area. This certainly helps to support those who have lost their jobs since COVID-19 as there is a rapid increase in the unemployment rate currently. Hence, do not miss out on the food that

By Kadia-loy Knight editor@streethype.net is being distributed now- I urge New Yorkers to use the available resources to stock up on food items in preparation for a suspected return of increase in the COVID-19 cases. If you live in New York, there is a food pantry close to you, and the volunteers there are more than willing to serve you. We are not yet out of the ballpark where the virus is a concern, and the only way we can enforce that we keep each safe is to follow the guidelines and to remain indoors if possible. Eventually, this Coronavirus will pass over us, but in the meantime- the fewer people are congregating, the more our chances of survival increase.

he United States will be revoking the visas of individuals “responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Guyana.” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the sanctions during a live press briefing on Wednesday, July 15th. “Immediate family members of such persons may also be subject to restrictions,” Pompeo warned. “The Granger Government must respect the results of democratic elections and step aside.” Pompeo had warned sanctions

were coming at his July 1 briefing as he noted “Guyana’s election is long past due for a peaceful transition.” However, the process has been stalled due to legal challenges and the Chief Elections Officer’s refusal to submit his election report.

COVID stats increase in Haiti, Guyana; remain stable in Jamaica Port Au Prince, Haiti: he death toll from the coronavirus pandemic rose to 139 in Haiti after the country recorded four more deaths in the past 24 hours. o New York State has a new rent relief program to help tenants who have lost income during the COVID-19 crisis. The COVID Rent Relief Program will provide eligible households with a one-time rental subsidy that will be sent directly to the household’s landlord. Accepted applicants are not required to repay this assistance. o Applications for the COVID Rent Relief Program, administered by New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) opened on July 16, and applications must be submitted online or by mail by July 30. o You can apply and find detailed information at: hcr.ny.gov/RRP. The website also includes FAQ documents in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Haitian-Creole, Bengali, and Korean. How do I know if I’m eligible? o Before March 1st and at the time of application, household income must have been below 80% of the Area Median Income, and you must have spent more than 30% of household income on rent. Review NYC Area Median Income, based on household. o You must not have been in receipt of a housing subsidy that caps your rent at 30% of household income (like Section 8 or NYCHA). However, you can apply if you live in a rent regulated or market-rate home. o You do not need a lease. o Households must have someone in the household with U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status (can be a minor). Mixed status families (e.g. a family with a U.S. born child) can apply. IDNYC is accepted as proof of identity. o Households must have lost income between April 1 and July 31. · How does it work? o This one-time rental subsidy paid directly to landlords will cover the difference between the percent of household income spent on rent on March 1, 2020 and the percent of household income spent on rent at the time the household is applying for assistance. You can apply for up to four months in assistance for the months of April through July 2020. o Tenants do not have to be behind on their rent to receive assistance (tenants who are current on their rent payments can have funds applied for a credit for future months). The program is open to households that rent apartments, single-family homes, manufactured homes and manufactured home lots. o This is not a first come first serve type of program. Due to limited funds, HCR will have to prioritize applications from tenants with the lowest incomes and highest rent burden. o Applicants will be given notice whether they are eligible and the amount of funds that will be sent to their landlords. Need more information? o You can visit the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants’ website or call 311 and say “Tenant Helpline” to inquire further about program eligibility or to receive guidance on the application. o For assistance with problems with your application, you can call the New York State HCR Call Center at 833-499-0318. Call Center support is available from 8:00 a.m.

to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. o If you have questions about immigration and public benefits, call the free, confidential ActionNYC hotline at 800-354-0365, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., or call 311 and say "Public Charge" to access timely and trusted information and connections to legal help.

T Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz presents check for recovered funds to Kadribegic family. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz returned $38,671 to Ms. Alemina Kadribegic, with her father Husamedin, after the Housing and Worker Protection Bureau foiled a business email scheme targeting their family and attorney. The Kadribegics believed they were sending money to their attorney but instead got robbed by an online imposter.

usiness transactions that require good faith and trust are increasingly being conducted online and through email. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and increasing reliance on technology, transactions once done by inperson interactions and even a trusted handshake now take place virtually. Unfortunately, online predators and scammers have caught on and are using manipulative business email schemes to prey on consumers. Individuals are led to believe they are communicating with someone they trust – a lawyer, business acquaintance, etc. - and then

are conned into sending or transferring money to the perpetrator who is just pretending to be someone they trust. My Office is actively pursuing wrongdoers to protect Queens residents from these scam artists. Members of the Queens Bar and realty community members should be aware that their electronic communications could be vulnerable and should take measures to protect their clients. Today, our office is returning $38,671.50 recovered from an attempted business email compromise scheme.

Jamaican Business Men US Visa Revoked Continued from page 1 The MOU will allow American intelligence and customs authorities to partner with local law enforcement to build cases against persons involved in the shipment of illegal items into the island. Tapia said the agreement should be finalized soon. "The Government of Jamaica is working very hard - the Attorney General, the other agencies... Keep in mind that it's not just one agency that it affects, it affects two or three, so each one of them must review it, make sure that their attorneys are OK with it and I believe that we will have that MOU that I spoke of in the very near future," he revealed. Tapia said the agreement should be beneficial to both countries, and not just for the US. "As long as it works for Jamaica and itworks for the US, it's a good MOU. When it's a one-way street when it only works for the US, it's a bad MOU for Jamaica," the US Ambassador insisted. Contributing stories from www.radiojamaica.com

Ms. Alemina Kadribegic and her father thought they were exchanging emails with their lawyer. They sent a down payment for an apartment they were buying in Queens to their attorney’s escrow account. In reality, Ms. Kadribegic had actually been misdirected by an imposter to send the money to a bank which the scammer had accessed. Instead of depositing money into a bank in Long Island, our investigation revealed, the account that received Kadribegic’s funds was actually physically located in Texas.

A Caribbean immigrant is suing the Trump administration News Americas: Caribbean immigrant in Philadelphia is suing the Trump administration. Maria Campbell Davis, who was born in Jamaica, along with Syrian national Abdel Wahab Alaussos, are suing to become citizens of the United States and gain the right to vote in the November 2020 elections, according to Inquirer.com’s Jeff Gammage. The two are asking the U.S. District Court in Eastern Pennsylvania to order the government to quickly administer the oath to everyone in their position, while there’s still time to register to vote in their state. “In a country where only 60% of eligible voters go to the polls and where the president actively sows doubt about the integrity of the election system, the right to cast a ballot means everything to them — a fundamental privilege of U.S. citizenship,” they state in the suit filed by four attorneys including two from National Immigration Litigation Alliance. Campbell Davis was interviewed for naturalization in January and was set to take the oath on March 19, 2020. But

the ceremony was canceled and not rescheduled, the suit said. That means she’s unable to petition for her Jamaican sons to immigrate to the U.S. or vote in November. “A much larger, expedited effort is needed to accommodate the hundreds of plaintiffs [whose] paths to U.S. citizenship have been delayed,” the lawsuit stated, “to ensure that they are not needlessly harmed by any additional delays.” Campbell Davis is a lawful permanent resident as is Alaussos. They both filed the class-action lawsuit against USCIS and other federal agencies and officials, saying that while the initial delay was understandable, it now has gone on too long. They want USCIS to use all available means and technologies — from virtual, online interactions to live, drive-up appearances — to conduct naturalizations by Sept. 28, 2020 in the COVID-19 era, three weeks before Oct. 19th, the last day on which Pennsylvanians can register to vote in the November election. The lawsuit comes as immigrant voters are poised to exert new impact on

a purple Pennsylvania that Donald Trump won by less than a percentage point in 2016. USCIS declined to comment on the suit.

Jamaica Continues To Welcome Visitors As it extends phase I of reopening through July KINGSTON, JAMAICA: amaica has announced revised measures for international travelers visiting the island as of July 15. All visitors will still be required to complete an online Travel Authorization. Travelers from Arizona, Florida, New York, and Texas (areas declared by the Ministry of Health and Wellness as high risk at this time), will be required to upload negative COVID-19 PCR test results. Tests should be no more than ten days old measured from the day the sample was taken to the day of arrival in Jamaica. These results, provided by a CAP-accredited lab, are required for travelers from high risk locations to receive the Travel Authorization certification, and must also be presented upon arrival in Jamaica. All visitors will still be screened upon arrival in Jamaica via thermal temperature checks, symptom observation and a brief interview with a Health Officer. Leisure travelers from areas not currently designated as high risk may be subject to swab testing based on symptoms or responses to the risk assessment. Those with negative results – as well as those who do not require testing – must adhere to the Stay in Zone order, which requires persons to remain at their hotel or resort within the Resilient Corridor for the duration of their stay. Those who are screened and assessed and show symptoms upon arrival will be subject to swab testing and must quarantine in their hotel room until test results are available. “Health and safety are paramount as we reopen our tourist industry on a phased basis,” said Donovan White, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. We have developed and are implementing procedures throughout the visitor journey that ensure a seamless process so they are able to enjoy what our island and its people have to offer.”

two and five days prior to their planned arrival in Jamaica. The online authorization includes the immigration form, thereby streamlining the entry process. Approved travelers will receive a travel certificate, which must be presented (printed or electronic) during the airline check-in process. Travelers from high-risk areas will receive their travel certification or denial 48 hours after submitting their questionnaire. All other travelers may complete the form any time within the five days prior to planned arrival and will receive immediate approval or denial through a scoring algorithm. The current process will be in effect through July 31. Jamaica’s health and safety measures are revisited every two weeks, which is consistent with the government's approach of evaluating the COVID-19 global situation. Shaggy revamps past hits for new album

G

rammy winning dancehall artiste Shaggy has revamped some of his most famous hits for his new album Hot Shot 2020. The project which is available since June 10th is in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his diamond-selling album. The album will feature familiar songs like Keepin' It Real, Luv Me Luv Me, Boombastic and Oh Carolina but with a twist. While speaking on Good Morning America Shaggy said he incorporated trap and reggaeton beats in line with the current musical climate. He also shared that close friend and frequent collaborator Sting is featured on the project's new version of Angel, a track he released in 2000 with fellow musician Rayvon. Shaggy hopes the album serves as an escape and brings joy, smiles and sunshine amid COVID-19.

Past students association helped hundreds of current students impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, and are planning to further extend their benevolence. The group already distributed 200 care packages to students, said Shaw. He said the association also handed over a microwave and a refrigerator to the school’s Welfare Department.“Some of our parents have expressed financial hardship resulting from COVID-19, preventing them from finding lunch money,” Shaw explained. He said the initiative, which raised $332,000, was a joint effort by the local association and its overseas chapters, including the Jose Marti Alumni Association (New York Chapter) and the Canadian Chapter.

In the works, is a collaboration with India based label Omari Banks IncSync Music. Although Omari's name and presence rings familiar in India to cricket fans, it is in 2018 that he brought reggae music to that side

Windies skipper Holder gets stokes again to spark England collapse South Hampton, United Kingdom: est Indies captain Jason Holder removed opposing skipper Ben Stokes to trigger an England collapse that saw a late flurry of wickets fall on the fourth day of the first Test at Southampton July 11th. England were 284-8 in their second innings at stumps, a lead of 170 runs in a match that marks international cricket's return from lockdown. England fought back during a fourthwicket partnership of 98 between Zak Crawley and Stokes. But their 249-4 was soon transformed into 279-8 as five wickets fell for just 30 runs inside the final hour. No sooner had stand-in England skipper Stokes (46) fallen to rival all-rounder Holder for the second time in the match than Crawley was caught and bowled by paceman Alzarri Joseph for a Test-best 76. Jos Buttler then fell for nine when bowled through a huge gap between bat and pad by Joseph, who had stumps figures of 2-40. And there was still time for Windies spearhead Shannon Gabriel (3-62) to bowl Dom Bess and Ollie Pope. West Indies hold

W

the Wisden Trophy but they have not won a Test series in England for 32 years. Victory on July 12, however, would put them 1-0 up with two to play. “All you can do is get the two remaining wickets and bat normally,” West Indies coach Phil Simmons told reporters. “If we bat for five hours tomorrow to chase 180-190 it's a normal batting day, not a chase where you have to go at it.” But teams have faltered before facing seemingly modest fourth-innings chases and Crawley told Sky Sports: “It should be tight if we bowl well. “We've definitely got the bowlers to take 10 wickets on there.” England were still one run behind West Indies' first -innings 318 when Crawley came to the crease. But the 22-year-old, in his fifth Test, completed a well-made fifty when he reverseswept off-spinner Roston Chase for four before surpassing his previous best of 66 against South Africa at Johannesburg in January. Stokes, skippering the side in the absence of Joe Root, had already top-scored with 43 in England's meagre first-innings 204 before leading their attack with 4-49.

Paterson Councilwoman Mimms gives out 28 scholarships to students More than two dozen college-bound city students received scholarships from councilwoman Lilisa Mimms on Saturday afternoon. Mimms gave a third-year Virginia State University student a $250 scholarship. Her scholarships for students heading to college in the fall took the form of two-inone tablets. She said the total scholarships were worth $5,000. “Every year, for 15 years, I’ve been doing scholarships for students throughout the city of Paterson because I believe our students are important,” said Mimms, a former school board member, while giving out the scholarships at Mary Ellen Kramer Park. Mimms pointed out the students receiving scholarships are all Paterson residents. She also said the students come from the city’s many ethnic communities. One student to receive a tablet computer was Michael Boria, 18, of the Silk City Academy.

5 tips for communicating with your partner while stuck at home By Kara Fletcher any of us are several weeks into stayat-home directives from our governments and health officials. For many, social distancing means sharing a confined space with romantic partners while navigating new stressful issues including sudden unemployment, working from home, child care and the never ceasing uncertainty. Unsurprisingly, there are reports of divorce rates skyrocketing in China since the outbreak of COVID-19. Instability and stress can exacerbate insecurities and increase conflict for couples. As a scholar and a couple and family therapist, I offer five practical, evidence-based tips for couples when being stuck at home is making you feel stuck in your relationship. 1. Take space: Sharing a physical space with your partner for extended periods of time can increase pressure and stress. Without the daily routine of leaving the home, your space may begin to feel very small and irritation with one another may escalate quickly. Research demonstrates that actively choosing to take alone time can contribute to relaxation and reduced stress. Consider taking regular blocks of alone time each day, whether it is a walk around the neighborhood, closing the door to a room where you will not be disturbed or engaging in an activity that is just for you. Communicating how you plan to take space will help your partner know how to support your efforts, and will encourage them to do the same. If you’re not taking care of yourself, you will have little to offer your partner. 2. Where possible, use “I” statements: When you need to tell your partner how you feel, try to speak from your perspective as opposed to accusing them of doing something wrong. For example, “I feel really defeated when I continue to find dirty dishes in the sink. Is there any way you can help me keep the kitchen clean? “Using “I” language has been found to reduce perceptions of hostility and anger. “I” statements can help your partner hear your perspective instead of interpreting it as an attack and becoming defensive. 3. Press pause: Press pause on conflicts that are not going anywhere and set a time to try again later. When conflicts become heated, many couples enter into an automatic “fight, flight or freeze” response. Our brains can experience conflict as a threat, and emotions and defenses can become activated. When this happens we shut down and conflict resolution becomes impossible. If you notice you or your partner getting angry or distressed in a conflict, request to put the conversation on pause to give you both a chance to step back, breathe and think. 4. What’s your part?: If you find yourself continuing to get stuck in conflict with your partner, ask yourself, what part do I play in this conflict? Do I nag or pursue my partner when I am feeling anxious? Or, do I have a tendency to shut down, or avoid my partner when I am feeling pressured? Emotionally focused therapist and researcher Sue Johnson, has found that couples often get stuck in problematic interaction cycles. Considering what role you take in a conflict cycle can help you try out new positions. For example, what happens when you respond to your partner’s anxiety with com-

M

passion as opposed to feeling annoyed and walking away? What happens when you share your worries with your partner, instead

of getting angry at them for not taking the garbage out, or not helping enough with child care?

5. Acknowledge strengths: Try to acknowledge one another’s strengths. What special skills does your partner have to get through hard times? If your partner is the one making home school schedules for the kids, or braving the grocery store while you work, let them know they are appreciated and compliment their ability to handle difficult situations. Note what strengths they have that you admire. As recent research demonstrated, greater appreciation for one’s partner’s strengths predicted increased relationship satisfaction and intimacy. Acknowledging your partner’s positive attributes creates more good feelings between you. While these tips will help you mitigate conflict in your relationship, remember to not expect perfection. These are stressful times, and you will inevitably lose your patience and experience frustration.

IRS debunks tax refund myths WASHINGTON: ith the July 15 tax deadline now past, the Internal Revenue Service reminds all taxpayers that there is no secret way to find out when a refund will be issued. Most taxpayers have already filed their federal tax return, and many have already received their refund. Those that have not are understandably eager for details about when their refund will arrive. When it comes to tax refunds, a few common myths keep circulating and misinforming taxpayers. Some key facts can help people understand the refund process better: Taxpayers who file electronically and use direct deposit can expect their refund faster than those who mail a paper return, especially since the COVID-19 outbreak has reduced IRS staffing available to process paper returns. Taxpayers who file a paper tax return are likely to face processing and refund delays. The best and easiest way to check on a refund is Where's My Refund? The Where's My Refund? tool available on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app. A tax refund's status can be checked within 24 hours after the taxpayer receives the e-file acceptance notification.

W

Processing delays for paper tax returns The IRS continues to process electronic and paper tax returns, issue refunds, and accept payments. The IRS is experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. This is causing refund delays. Taxpayers who have already filed a paper return should know that the IRS is processing paper returns in the order in which they are received. In addition, interest on individual 2019 refunds reflected on returns filed by July 15, 2020, will generally be paid from April 15, 2020, until the date of the refund. Interest payments may be received separately from the refund and are considered taxable income in the year received. Taxpayers who filed a paper return should not file the same tax return again or call the IRS. Common myths about tax refunds include: • Getting a refund this year means there's no need to adjust withholding for 2020. To help avoid a possible surprise next year, taxpayers should look to make changes now. Adjusting tax withholding with an employer can help ensure that neither too much nor too little tax is withheld from an employee's pay-

check. The Tax Withholding Estimator helps taxpayers figure out the right amount. Calling the IRS or a tax professional will provide a better refund date • Contacting the IRS or a tax professional will not expedite a refund. IRS assistors and tax professionals cannot move up a refund date nor do they have access to any "special" information that will provide a more accurate refund date. Ordering a tax transcript is a secret way to get a refund date • Ordering a tax transcript will not help taxpayers find out when they will get their refund and it does not accelerate the issue date of a refund. The Where's My Refund? tool is wrong because there's no deposit date yet • When Where's My Refund? shows the tax return status is received it means that we have received the tax return and are processing it. Some returns may take longer to process than others and needs further review. This includes when a return: • Includes errors • Is incomplete • Is affected by identity theft or fraud • Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation, which could take up to 14 weeks to process Taxpayers will be contacted by mail if the IRS needs more information to process a tax return. People waiting for a refund in the mail should plan for the additional time a check takes to arrive. Something is wrong when the refund amount is less than expected There are a lot of reasons that cause a tax refund to be different than expected. Situations that could decrease a refund include: Taxpayer math errors or mistakes Owing federal or state taxes, child support, student loans or other federal non-tax obligations A portion of the refund is held while IRS reviews an item claimed on the return The IRS will mail a letter of explanation if these adjustments are made. Some taxpayers may also receive a letter from the Department of Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service if their refund was reduced to offset certain financial obligations. Taxpayers can call the IRS's automated refund hotline at 800829-1954, which uses the same information as "Where's My Refund?". There is no need to call the IRS unless Where's My Refund? says to do so.

We Cancel Timeshares for You Many people believe their timeshares cannot be canceled, but they often can be. Our founder and CEO, Chuck McDowell, has successfully fought in federal court for the right to help timeshare owners — like you — out of their “binding” agreements. Whether you were misled or pressured, you may have an easy exit.

How Does the Cancellation Process Work? • Start with a FREE consultation to discuss your needs. • If we see that the circumstances of your agreement qualify you to exit the timeshare, you’ll be assigned a specialist to walk you through gathering documentation. • Our Resolution Department then works quickly to have your timeshare and related fees permanently terminated. We are able to help most timeshare owners that contact us. You could be one phone call away from complete peace of mind.
