He was joined by State Sen. Jamaal Bailey, State Assembly Member Victor Pichardo, Bronx Deputy Borough President Marricka Scott-McFadden as well as members of National Action Network, Bronx Chapter; Community Board 12, Williamsbridge NAACP, local school principals, clergy, parents, and youth. A way to make paying your rent work for you! R ecently the NYC Comptroller, Scott M. Stringer visited the North East Bronx at a Town Hall meeting. The meeting was full as many Bronx residents came out to learn about the new changes that will occur in the Bronx; one of which is the “Making rent count pilot program initiative.” According to the NYC Comptroller, “One of the economic threats to our city is credit and the lack of access to it.” As Americans, we know that a credit score reveals a person’s financial power. It helps a person to get the things that he or she needs such as a loan or a credit card with the promise that they will pay later. Therefore, working towards increasing or maintaining a good credit score will get you the things that you need when you need it. In a nutshell, a good credit score is equivalent to having a good life. However, according to Scott M. Stringer, “one in five New Yorkers have no credit score at all and in communities with

By Solemn_Vow editor@streethype.net low credit scores. Seventy-eight percent of residents rent their homes, more than ninety percent of residents are black or Hispanic, and one in ten residents live in the New York City Housing projects.”

Therefore, to combat this disparity, Scott Stringer, and the Banana Kelly, Community Improvement Association launched a pilot program to help New Yorkers boost their credit scores by paying their rent. New York City renters will be able to apply their monthly rent payments toward their credit scores. This pilot program will be launched first in the South Bronx where six hundred tenants across twenty-seven buildings will now be able to add their rent payments to their credit histories. This will be similar to what homeowners do for their mortgage payments. Consequently, this will benefit those who usually pay their rent on time to boost their credit score. This will also help to encourage those who are delinquents in paying their rent, to start doing so now and on time to increase their credit score and in the same breath to improve their quality of life.

ou should know that the City of New York has become the first city in the nation that has regulated Uber. It is also very important for you to know that even those responsible for Uber being the cause of drivers taking their lives, and the devastation of the Yellow Taxi industry, now are taking and claiming credit for what The For Hire Vehicle Committee has accomplished. The For Hire Vehicle Committee was created by Council Speaker Corey Johnson under a negotiation with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and the Bronx Democratic County Chairman, Assemblyman Marcos Crespo. After becoming aware of my efforts to solve the problems of The For Hire Vehicle drivers, and my serious commitment and concern for this industry, Assemblyman Crespo was very influential in convincing the Speaker, Corey Johnson to appoint me as the Chair of this newly created Committee. This Committee is geared toward exploring the issues that negatively impact the drivers of the taxi industry, especially the livery drivers under the Transportation Committee which was led by Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez. Councilmember Rodriguez and some of the same councilmembers that are now claiming credit were responsible, in 2016, for approving legislation to increase penalties up to $10,000.00 for those drivers picking up passengers in the street in order to give Uber and others the opportunity to be the ones allowed to do street hails. By taking away the Taxi Section from the Transportation Committee, and creating the newly independent Committee, Speaker Johnson gave me the authority and the opportunity to hold public hearings and to question, even The Taxi and Limousine Commissioner, about the abuses done to livery drivers and allowing Uber to devastate the Yellow Taxi industry. There were some central council staff and some councilmembers working to put an end to my efforts as The Committee Chairman,

Christopher Collins of New York was arrested Wednesday on charges he fed inside information that he gleaned from sitting on the board of a biotechnology company to his son, helping others dodge hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses when bad news came out. The charges were announced against Collins, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump who is up for re-election in November.

Intern class sees city government firsthand R Congressman Collins

An indictment unsealed in federal court in Manhattan charges Collins, the congressman’s son and the father of the son’s fiance with conspiracy, wire fraud and other counts. Prosecutors say the charges relate to a scheme to gain insider information about Innate Immunotherapeutics Limited, a biotechnology company headquartered in Sydney, Australia, with offices in Auckland, New Zealand. According to the indictment, the defendants tried to get early word on the results of trials of a drug the company developed to treat multiple sclerosis. The 68-year-old Collins, a conservative who was first elected in 2014 to represent parts of western New York between Buffalo and Rochester, has denied any wrongdoing. When the House Ethics Committee began investigating the stock trades a year ago, his spokeswoman called it a “partisan witch hunt.”

Williams' office had the opportunity to see New York City government operating up close, on a trip to City Hall for the Council's Stated Meeting. During Stated meetings, large amounts of legislation are put before the full body for deliberation and a vote. The intern class took the opportunity to watch the proceedings from the balcony of Council Chambers as a number of important bills were discussed and voted upon. These included a proposed street co-naming by Council Member Williams, creating Jean-Jacques Dessalines Boulevard in Flatbush. The measure passed overwhelmingly. The summer class of 2018 interns comes from all different backgrounds and schools, including many from the 45th District. They work in various departments, including legislative, community outreach and constituent affairs. The group visiting on Wednesday operates primarily out of the district office in East Flatbush. Council Member Williams has made it a priority to open up internship opportunities at his district and legislative offices, providing summer employment for youth throughout the city. It is his hope that other local businesses

that this legislation was motivated by political contributions. This not true! And this is not right. You should know that my only intention was to bring equality and justice to the taxi industry, that for many years had been used, abused, and ignored by everyone including the NYC Administrations. The press and some of my colleagues have refused to give me any credit or acknowledge that it was the efforts of my Committee for this historic moment in NYC. However, everyone, Uber and company know that no matter how much money, lies and scare tactics, there is now, a For Hire Vehicles Committee, in the NYC Council with a Chairman that are not for sale, not for rent, and not for hire. Man pleads guilty to robbery charges WESTCHESTER: ykeem Hines, 22 of the Bronx pleaded guilty last Thursday to Robbery in the Second Degree, a class C violent felony, following a January home robbery in Mount Vernon. Westchester County Court Judge Barry Warhit accepted the plea.

Tykeem Hines On Jan. 14, 2018, Hines committed a gunpoint robbery in an apartment on South 13th Avenue in Mount Vernon. He negotiated to sell a Moncler brand jacket to the victim over social media. Instead, when he met the victim for the sale, he brandished a gun inside the victim’s apartment and demanded money. At the time of the robbery, three adults and a 6-year-old child were present in the apartment. Hines threatened to shoot the victims and stole money and a bracelet before fleeing from the apartment. He ran from the scene and threw his unloaded gun to the ground, which was recovered by Mount Vernon Police. He was arrested Feb. 27, 2018, when he appeared in Bronx Criminal Court for a pending gun charge. Hines is expected to be sentenced Sept. 27, 2018. In accordance with his plea agreement, he will receive a sentence of six years in state prison.

We are standing here today united, with the support of the governor, the mayor, the NYPD and the entire community,” said Council Member King. Drawing attention to the dangers of K2, Council Member King announced that he would be introducing a piece of legislation in the City Council that will fine businesses that sell K2 or landlords of companies that sell K2.

“The bill proposes $100,000 fines to a business or landlord whose storefront is found to have been selling K2 drugs,” said Council Member King. “Landlords, I say to you that it’s time you pay attention to who you rent your storefronts to from now on.”

kills 1,400 in Puerto Rico By Caribbean News Now contributor SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — he government of Puerto Rico has now estimated in a report to Congress that Hurricane Maria killed more than 1,400 people, though the official death toll remains at 64. The island’s government, citing updated statistics it first reported in June, said in its latest report to Congress in connection with a $139 billion reconstruction plan that there were 1,427 more deaths from September to December 2017 than the average for the same time period over the previous four years. The territory’s government said that the additional deaths resulted from the effects of a storm that led to a “cascading failures” in infrastructure across the island of 3.3 million people. The administration of Governor Ricardo Rossello stopped updating its official death toll months ago and ordered an investigation amid reports that the number was substantially undercounted. Public Safety Department Secretary Hector Pesquera said the new total will reflect the findings of the investigation, which is expected in the coming weeks.

Grenada PM to launch inquiry into citizenship by investment program By Caribbean News Now contributor ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: ew chairman of the St Kitts-based Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Monetary Council, prime minister of Grenada, Dr Keith Mitchell, has announced he will be launching an inquiry into whether the region’s citizenship by investment programmes (CIPs) are making it mandatory for their applicants to go through regional security due diligence, as they have committed to doing. “There are reports circulating of some citizenship by investment applicants receiving passports without the regional body getting the data about the applicant and not conducting the relevant due diligence,” Mitchell told reporters during his weekly post-cabinet briefing on Monday, according to Now Grenada. “Despite the fact that some are saying this doesn’t happen in their jurisdiction, the fact is that rumours are out there, and I told my colleagues that we have to deal with this. If it’s not true, then we have to confront it. We cannot just say it’s not true because the rumours are circulating, so they have mandated me to get the facts and to examine the issue,” he continued. Applicants to the Caribbean’s various CIPs are supposed to get the green light from regional vetting bodies like CARICOM’s Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and the Joint Regional Communication Centre agency.

Dominican Republic top the list for overstaying on their US visas By NAN Staff Writer News Americas, New York, NY: ome 45,303 Caribbean nations entered the U.S. on a business or visitor’s B1/B2 visa in fiscal year 2017 but never left, a News Americas analysis has found. The NAN analysis of latest Department of Homeland Security data for last Fiscal Year, shows the majority of Caribbean overstays from the last Fiscal Year were by nationals from the Dominican Republic. The US recently released its ‘Fiscal Year 2017 Entry/Exit Overstay Report,’ which identifies all overstays, including of foreign-born students, from across the world, shows 11, 349 DR nationals overstayed their visas in FY 2017 alone. The second largest number of Caribbean overstays from FY 2017 were Haitians, who tallied at 10,558 according to the DHS data. Jamaicans took the third spot with 9,553 overstaying in FY 2017. The Bahamas and Barbados rounded out the top 5 with 3,760 and 2,677 overstays in FY 2017, respectively.

The DHS defines an overstay as “a nonimmigrant who was lawfully admitted to the United States for an authorized period but remained in the United States beyond his or her authorized period of admission.” Meanwhile, 711 Jamaican students, who entered on F, M or J visas as non-immigrant students or exchange visitors, also overstayed their visas after the period was complete in FY 2017, the highest for any Caribbean nation. They were followed by 306 Haitian and 296 Dominican Republic nationals.

Jamaica issues cultivating licence to grow medical cannabis KINGSTON, Jamaica: lobal Canna Labs Limited (GCL) has now formally received its Tier 3 cultivation licence from the Jamaican Cannabis Licensing Agency, which allows the company to cultivate organic medical cannabis at its 270,000 square feet facility within its 6.23 acres site in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The company was founded in 2015 and engages in cultivating, manufacturing, import, export, distributing, and sell cannabis for medical and recreational purposes in Jamaica.

Pursuant to its licence, GCL has commenced planting 8,000 seedlings for its first cycle. The first harvest is anticipated in Q4 2018. GCL has also started the expansion of its current growing facility in Montego Bay. GCL is committed to achieving its GGAP (Global Good Agricultural Procedures), GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and GMP EU (Good Manufacturing Practices – European Union) certifications in months to come. GCL is also working towards the acquisition of an additional 300 acres of land in Jamaica.

A press statement from the organization said Howard, 75, was found dead in his Brooklyn home by his son William E. Howard, Jr. shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday. A coroner’s report has apparently indicated he died of natural causes. “We are all devastated,” Howard’s family was quoted as saying. “We loved Bill dearly and will miss him terribly. We would ask that our privacy is respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.” Howard grew up in Fredericksburg, Virginia before moving to New York. At 23, he became campaign finance manager of then New York State Legislator Shirley Chisholm, a Caribbean-American lawmaker who would go on to become a congressional representative and later a candidate for President. Howard went on to a celebrated career in business and government, including a stint as a deputy trustee in the U.S. Justice Department. He worked in a decades-long job as vice president for finance with the Equitable Life Assurance Society, where he was involved with making multi-milliondollar loans to various municipalities, corporations and individuals. Later, he also served on the Board of Brooklyn’s Jewish Hospital, which then became the Interfaith Hospital Cente, where he chaired the finance committee and once was president of the nursing school. In addition, he was a City University of New York board member from 1983 to 1995. Howard also served as First Vice President of the Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute for Children and also participated in the former President Barak Obama’s Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony in tribute to Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in Washington, DC.

How USCIS Estimates Application and Petition Processing Times

Samantha J recovering from fall in Belize Jamaican-born singer Samantha J is recuperating from injuries she received after falling down a flight of stairs last Friday night at a hotel off the mainland of Belize. The injuries include broken teeth and jaw, a fractured hand and swelling to her lower back.

Jamaica Celebrates its 56th year of Independence T

he Colony of Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962. In Jamaica, this date is celebrated as Independence Day, a national holiday. The Caribbean island now known as Jamaica was first settled by the Arawak and Taíno peoples, who originated in neighboring South America. Genoan explorer Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica in 1494 during his second voyage to the New World, and claimed it for Crown of Castile. At this time, over two hundred villages existed in Jamaica, largely located on the south coast and ruled by caciques, or "chiefs of villages". The Spanish Empire began its official rule in Jamaica in 1509. After 146 years of Spanish rule, a large group of British sailors and soldiers landed in the Kingston Harbor on 10 May 1655, during the Anglo-Spanish War. The English, who had set their sights on Jamaica after a disastrous defeat in an earlier attempt to take the island of Hispaniola, marched toward Villa de la Vega, the administrative center of the island. Spanish forces surrendered without much fight on 11 May, many of them fleeing to Spanish Cuba or the northern portion of the island. British colonial jurisdiction over the island was quickly established, with the newly renamed Spanish Town named the capital and home of the local House of Assembly, Jamaica's directly elected legislature. Slavery was abolished in the British Empire by the Slavery Abolition Act in 1834. Following a period of intense debate, the native and African populace of Jamaica were granted the right to vote; as the 19th century continued the government allowed some of them to hold public office. Despite these accomplishments, the white members of Jamaican colonial society continued to hold the real power.

n celebration of Jamaica’s 56th Anniversary of Independence, the Consulate General of Jamaica – New York will be hosting its annual an Independence Church Service and Flagraising Ceremony on August 5, 2018.

Norman Manley and Alexander Bustamantee - Jamaica’s Founding Fathers During the first half of the 20th century the most notable Black leader was Marcus Garvey, a labor leader and advocate of Black Nationalism. Marcus Garvey is regarded as a national hero in present-day Jamaica. As World War II came to a close, a sweeping movement of decolonization overtook the world. British Government and local politicians began a long transition of Jamaica from a crown colony into an independent state. The political scene was dominated by PNP and JLP, with the houses of legislature switching hands between the two throughout the 1950s.

After Norman Manley was elected Chief Minister in 1955, he sped up the process of decolonization via several constitutional amendments. These amendments allowed for greater self-government and established a cabinet of ministers under a Prime Minister of Jamaica. On 19 July 1962, the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the Jamaica Independence Act, granting independence as of 6 August with The Queen as Head of State. On that day, the Union Jack was ceremonially lowered and replaced by the Jamaican flag throughout the country. Princess Margaret opened the first session of the Parliament of Jamaica on behalf of The Queen.

The ceremony will be held at the Catholic Church of St. Frances of Rome located at 761 East 236th Street, Bronx, NY 10466. The Flag-raising ceremony will begin at 3:00 pm to be followed by the Church Service at 4:00 p.m. Under the theme, “Jamaica 56, Gratitude, Love, and Unity,” Consul General Deans noted that as is customary, the Jamaican community in the Tri-State area and greater New York will come together in worship and fellowship as they seek God’s continuous guidance and prosperity for the people of Jamaica. “Despite challenges over the years, the people of Jamaica have achieved significant successes in both economic and social gains for which as a Christian nation we are very thankful to our God and savior Jesus Christ. We could not achieve much without a demonstration of genuine love, unity, and respect for each other as suggested in the Holy Bible,” Consul General Deans emphasized.

ifty-six years of democratic nationhood for any country, particularly for a small developing country like ours, is a major accomplishment! Jamaica has such a colorful history, making the transition from centuries of colonial rule to decades of independent rule. We celebrate this distinguished tradition of social and political stability and democratic rule, marked by free elections and seamless transition of government. We should never take this accomplishment for granted. Our impact internationally also belies our small size. Jamaica is well known for the role it played in shaping the global human rights architecture as far back as the 1960s, even before gaining independence. As host of the headquarters of the International Seabed Authority in Kingston, our outstanding role in shaping global governance of the oceans is clearly recorded. In addition, we have earned the moniker, â&#x20AC;&#x153;sprint capital of the worldâ&#x20AC;?, which is attributed to the strong athletic prowess of our skillful athletes. We continue to tantalise the tastebuds of many with our renowned jerk, the iconic Jamaican patty, the inimitable blue mountain coffee and several other gastronomic delights, which characterise our exquisite cuisine. Our reggae music, immortalised by several of our talented artistes and musicians contributes not only to the music industry but also to global culture.

As you are well aware, the Government of Jamaica has made economic growth and job creation as well as the reduction of crime and violence its top priorities, as we seek to position our country to achieve its fullest potential. Already, we are seeing some encouraging results of this approach: we have achieved macroeconomic stability and low inflation; unemployment has fallen to 9.6%, the lowest recorded since October 2007; and there has been modest growth in the economy, driven by an increase in exports in goods and services. Let me take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to the members of the Jamaican Diaspora in the United States who continue to give sacrificially, volunteering their time, energy and resources towards the well-being of the wider Jamaican family, both those at home and abroad. e set foot on the path of nationhood August 6, 1962 and sang a new anthem, Jamaica Land We Love. The lyrics came from the pen of Reverend Hugh Sherlock, a man of God who led a ministry to the poor in Trench Town. The words were composed by the Hon. Robert Lightbourne, the then Minister of Trade and Industry and the arrangement was by the Lawyer and Musician, Mapletoft Poulle. Our anthem did not express the strain of militancy that characterizes many of the anthems in the world; ours was a prayer to god for guidance and protection as we entered the new estate, “Eternal Father Bless Our Land, Guard us with Thy Mighty Hand.” As we mark the 56th year of nationhood, it is fitting that we should express our gratitude to God for watching over us through these many years and the blessings that see us still living together in unity, still loving one another, and still loving our country. One of the distinguishing marks of Jamaica, is that the country is a living example of the fact that people of different cultures and ethnic origins can live together as one people as they move forward in their quest for political, social and economic success. One of the best expressions of this philosophy came from the pen of international reggae artiste, Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley in his song, “One Love, One Heart, let’s get together and feel all right.” This song, some years ago was recognized by the BBC as

the international song of the year and a goal to which all mankind should strive. But Marley is not the only Jamaican who has won international acclaim for the country; other persons like Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Veronica Campbell have been the toast of more than one renewal of the Olympic Games. Our second- generation Jamaicans such as Brianna Williams is making her mark on the world athletic stage. So too is Michael Rainey Jnr, as an Actor in the acclaimed Starz series, Power. In the field of science, the Jamaican Scientist, Dr. Henry Lowe is at the forefront of the effort to develop the healing properties of Cannabis for the benefit of those

who fall ill. Recently, Professor Reginald Blake, who hails from St. Catherine, received the United States Presidential Award for Excellence in teaching or mentoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This award is the highest honour bestowed upon mentors who work to expand talent in the STEM fields. Jamaica continues to uphold at home and in the international community, the principles of government based on the will of the people and of open economies where people from disadvantaged groups may rise to the highest levels in the society. Jamaica continues to observe and promote the United Nations International Declaration of Human Rights and is active on many of the World Body’s committees that promote cultural diversity and the removal of the barriers to human development based on gender, religious belief, racial origin or social class. In these and other areas, Jamaica has and continues to give her best to the world. NEW JERSEY Man sentenced to 17 yrs for bank robberies NEWARK: Union County, New Jersey, man was sentenced today to 204 months in prison for robbing seven banks – and attempting to rob an eighth bank while brandishing a firearm – committing one carjacking and attempting to commit three additional carjackings, and taking a hostage at gunpoint while fleeing, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced. Marlon Peek, 42, of Plainfield, New Jersey, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden in Newark federal court to Counts One through 11, 13, 15, and 17 of an indictment. The counts include: seven counts of bank robbery, one count of carjacking, one count of attempted bank robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of use and brandishing of a firearm during a crime of violence, three counts of attempted carjacking, and one count of forced accompaniment in attempting to avoid apprehension for the attempted armed bank robbery. At each bank, Peek presented a note demanding cash from bank tellers, including, on at least six occasions, statements that he had a gun and would shoot. During the robbery of the TD Bank in Edison, New Jersey, on March 17, 2015, Peek handed a teller a note that read, in part, “I have gun will shoot to kill you have 3 seconds.” In the course of the attempted robbery of the Bank of America, Peek pointed a loaded firearm directly at a bank teller. ————

Police Chief arrested on drug charges M ichael Coppola, the chief of the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department, was arrested Thursday for allegedly buying cocaine and having it shipped to a Passaic County post office box, authorities said in a news release. Investigators believed Coppola was ordering drugs through the internet and having it delivered to the post office box, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

So prosecutor's office detectives ensnared Coppola, 43, by putting a package filled with imitation cocaine in the post office box in response to a recent order, according to the prosecutor's office. Coppola allegedly picked up the package, which he thought contained cocaine, on Thursday, according to the prosecutor's office. A team of detectives then stopped and arrested the chief on Route 80 in Ridgefield Park.

New Jersey reports first human case of West Nile virus this year Hunterdon County: ew Jersey health officials report that the state has seen its first case of West Nile virus in a human this year. Officials say that the case was confirmed in Hunterdon County and that two other potential cases are under investigation. Mosquito pools in every county in New Jersey except for Passaic have tested positive for the virus. Officials say that 284 pools tested positive — almost 100 more than at this time last year. Bergen County may be the hardest hit, with 20 of those pools located there. More than 100 people across the country have tested positive for the illness this year.

Health officials say that most people infected with the virus do not see any symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that one in 150 people infected develop a serious illness that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms include high fever, convulsions and muscle weakness, and the illness can put someone in a comatose state. Of those who develop a seri-

ous illness from the virus, one in 10 die, according to officials. Several counties around the state are spraying for mosquitoes to reduce the number that could potentially carry the virus. Residents are urged to keep pets indoors overnight while spraying is underway.

nited States Attorney Trent Shores announced that a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Adam Gallardo Arrendondo, 56, of Waxahachie, Texas, charging him with Illegal Remuneration for Health Care Referrals. The indictment alleges that Arrendondo solicited and received checks in exchange for referring compounding prescriptions paid for by federal programs. Compounding prescriptions are the result of combining or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient that are not FDA approved. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. United States Attorney Shores stated, “Illegal payment for health care referrals undermines the integrity of our health care system. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will bring to justice those who engage in health care fraud by exploiting programs that provide care for millions of Americans.”

Knowing when your relationship is really over By Samantha Grasso

s the song goes, breaking’ up is hard to do. Maybe you’re a partner hanging on for dear life wondering how to know when a relationship is over.

Or maybe you’re the one who feels like the relationship has run its course. Either way, reaching that agreement is no simple feat. We asked two experts for relationship tips that will help you know when your relationship is over. International renowned sex and relationship therapist, Cyndi Darnell, and John Daly, an interpersonal communications expert and communications studies professor at the University of Texas at Austin. There is no hard and fast sign indicating that a relationship is over- We’ll start by saying that there is not a catch-all sign that tells you, point blank, that a relationship is over. As Darnell puts it, “life is not a series of soundbites.” Daly, too, says that prescriptiveness about relationships doesn’t work, and each couple is different. “We cannot say, categorically, these are the things that mean a relationship is good, and these are the things that mean a relationship is bad,” Darnell says. “Life is really damn complex.” One person in the relationship is totally checked out-Darnell says less-invested partners aren’t paying attention. You might notice they’re spending more time answering emails or perusing Facebook. Maybe you realize that you haven’t gone on a date in a while. And this doesn’t necessarily mean a date where you spend money. Rather, it’s spending intentional time doing something that gives attention to the relationship. Darnell says ultimately, someone decides a relationship is over when they can’t be bothered to participate, or are no longer willing. Certain behaviors might indicate that one person is investing less in a relationship- Daly references the work of Dr. John Gottman, who launched the world’s first couples laboratory—the Love Lab—at the University of Washington in 1986. Gottman developed what Daly calls the “four deadly sins that [show that] we need to break up,” which Gottman called the “Four Horsemen:” criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Partners criticize when they critique the person, instead of the behavior they take issue with. A partner may not want to spend time with you and find excuses not to be around, or might withdraw physically or emotionally (though you should determine the reason for withdrawal). They may exhibit cynicism about the relationship, or relationships in general, Daly says. For example, they might say, “Wow, look at that couple cuddling over there. They’re so cute, but they’re going to learn how bad it is.” One partner just isn’t ready for what the other partner wants- Sometimes you’re just not ready for what your partner is ready for, like marriage or having children, Daly says. Perhaps you’d be OK with these life changes if you had met them 10 years from now, but not today. That doesn’t mean the relationship is bad, but if you’re on different pages regarding life changes, things are going to be “awkward,” to say the least. You may love your partner, but this breakup may still be necessary, even if it’s difficult. You stop communicating about important feelings and stressors- A person in a shifting relationship may also start seeing their partner’s gains as their own losses, instead of not caring who “wins” or “loses.” Partners might stop talking to each other about stressors. That may seem good at first, but he says that the things that stress us out are probably

the most important to talk with a partner about. He says that feeling a relationship is “hopeless” may also be a predictor. “People will end up saying, ‘Well, we’ll never agree on how I spend money, let’s just not talk about it again. Or, ‘We’re never going to agree on sex, let’s just not have it anymore.’ And you just wear each other out, because those are the things that you actually have to work through to keep the relationship going,” Daly says. Daly says couples also clearly want to be careful of abusive relationships, including physical and emotional abuse—he says those are signs that the relationship is “really bad.”

Things you have to know to be computer literate By Justin James any of your readers are coasting along without adequate computer knowledge. Help them close the gap by sharing this list of essential skills. It is tempting to think that because you have used a computer for a long time, you are "computer literate" or "computer savvy," but this is not the case. Here are some skills you absolutely must know to be considered computer literate.

1: Search engines Using a search engine is more than typing in the address, putting a couple of keywords into the big text box, clicking Search, and choosing the first result. While that may work, it won't give you the best results much of the time. Learning the advanced search, Boolean operators, and how to discern good results from bad results goes a long way toward enabling you to use a computer as a powerful research tool.

6: Common keyboard commands If you do not know how to copy/paste without a mouse, you are not computer literate. Sorry! Every operating system has some universal keyboard commands, and while knowing them won't add 30 minutes back into your day, it will take a lot of the "friction" out of using a computer. Learning these commands is more a matter of routine than anything else; a short tutorial done once a day for a week will probably be enough to put you in the habit, and it will make you a happier user.

7: Basic hardware terminology It is tough to have someone help you with a problem when you tell them that your "hard drive" is unplugged, when you really mean "the computer." There are a number of common hardware misunderstandings out there, and while some are understandable (for instance, confusing a NIC with a modem — the cables look similar and they serve the same purpose, networking), knowing basic hardware terminology is a must-have skill to be a savvy user.

8: Simple networking diagnosis Networking problems create the most common trouble with most computers. While you don't need to be able to program a Cisco router, you should know how to: Determine your IP address; Verify physical connectivity to the network; and Check that you have a logical connection to the network 9: How to hook it up Despite the color coding of connections and the fact that most cords can be plugged into only one hole, tons of people still can't hook up a

computer. It is tough to claim to be computer literate if you can't even get it hooked up and turned on without some help. 10: Security/privacy 101 Artificial intelligence is ushering in a new era of supply chain optimization: an era where supply chain systems can think, analyze, present findings and provide recommendations, and constantly learn from interactions with humans. 2: Word processing Word processing is one of the oldest uses for a computer. And it continues to be extremely important, even though in many ways its functions have been put into other applications. (For example, people may write more emails than documents, but the task is nearly identical.) It is tough to claim to be computer literate if the basic functions of word processing — like spell check, table creation, and working with headers — are outside your capabilities. 3: Spreadsheets Spreadsheets were the killer application that got a lot of people willing to pony up big bucks for a PC in the early 1980s. Spreadsheets offer incredibly powerful analysis possibilities... if you know how to use them for more than storing the holiday card address list. (Okay, I use Excel for that too.) Being able to use formulas, references, and macros can turn a "grid of numbers" into actionable information in the hands of the right person. 4: Browser basics It is almost painful to watch some "computer savvy" people operate a Web browser. he Health Department announced that a recently recognized invasive tick species now found in parts of the United States was for the first time in New York City. The tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, also known as the “longhorned tick,” was found in the southern section of Staten Island. The tick is primarily found on livestock and wild animals, and has not been shown to transmit disease in the United States. The Health Department identified this species and worked with Rutgers University Center for Vector Biology to confirm the identification. Last month, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Staten Island Borough President Jimmy Oddo announced a new initiative that will enhance tick surveillance, outreach and control measures on Staten Island to reduce the risk of Lyme and other diseases that are acquired from certain types of ticks found on Staten Island including the blacklegged tick.
