What to Know About COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters R

ecently, important updates about the COVID-19 vaccine were announced—that certain people are now eligible for a “booster” dose. Since the beginning of COVID-19, our scientific understanding of the virus has constantly evolved, and many New Yorkers understandably have questions about this new development. I would like to provide the “who, why, and where” about boosters. Who should get a booster? All three brands of booster shots are available for many New Yorkers—Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson—and “mixing and matching” of the vaccines is safe. But who is eligible for a booster depends on the vaccine you originally received. At this time, the Pfizer and Moderna boosters are approved for certain people vaccinated at least six months ago—specifically, people who are aged 65 or older, adults with underlying medical conditions (like diabetes), and adults at higher risk of exposure due to their job (like health care workers) or due to where they live (like nursing home residents). The Johnson & Johnson booster is approved for anyone ages 18 or older who re-

By Dr. Dave A. Chokshi New York City’s Health Commissioner

ceived at least two months ago—as I did. Since “mixing and matching” is now authorized, Johnson & Johnson recipients can get a booster of any of the three authorized vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer, or Johnson & Johnson). There is limited data showing that Moderna or Pfizer vaccines could result in higher antibody levels.

Why get a booster? The science continues to show that all three of the authorized COVID-19 vaccines are safe and save lives. That’s why getting more New Yorkers vaccinated with their first and second doses remains the most important thing. The booster adds another layer of protection— it is meant to “boost” your immunity. This is particularly important for people who are most at risk for severe illness. Where can New Yorkers get a booster? In New York City, booster shots are available at sites in all five boroughs, and for inhome vaccination. To find a location near you, go to nyc.gov/vaccinefinder. The vaccines are free at City sites to all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status. Already, over 250,000 New Yorkers have received a booster shot. That means thousands of New Yorkers will have stronger protection from COVID-19. They will be able to gather with friends, family and loved ones more safely. And for any New Yorkers who are still unvaccinated, I urge you to take the first step today—join 6 million other New Yorkers and get vaccinated. It is our single best way out of this pandemic and a return to normal life again.

Advocates Decry Watered Down Immigration Provisions in Build Back Better as Unacceptable New York, NY: oday, House Democrats released the text of their Build Back Better reconciliation package. The spending plan includes immigration provisions, which would grant temporary and time-limited immigration and work benefits to immigrants brought here as children, TPS holders, and farmworkers, but without any path to a green card and eventual citizenship. The New York Immigration Coalition immediately joined national partners in demanding the Democratic Party deliver on their promise to deliver legalization for millions. Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition: “After four years of enduring the most anti-immigrant President in recent history, who sought out new and cruel ways to terrorize and rip apart families, immigrants need and deserve more than the temporary solutions and half-measures offered in this bill. Every one of us who calls America home, regardless of race or religion, deserves stability, safety, and opportunity for our families. It’s time for Senate Majority Leader Schumer to use his power to deliver for immigrant communities. We can’t wait any longer and we won’t accept the scraps of a makeshift stopgap as a solution because we know all too well the human costs of deferring the enactment of real lasting immigration reform. Senate Majority Leader Schumer has the power to build a better vision of our country and secure a true recovery. It’s time he and his caucus listened to the majority of the American people and delivered on their promise of a pathway to citizenship in the reconciliation bill.” Throughout the month of September, the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) has joined its national partners in a series of actions demanding that Congressional Democrats hold firm on their promise to deliver a pathway to citizenship.

DHS announces countries eligible for H-2A and H-2B Visa programs T

he Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in consultation with the Department of State (DOS), has announced the lists of countries whose nationals are eligible to participate in the H-2A and H-2B visa programs in the next year. The notice listing the eligible countries will be published in the Federal Register on Nov. 10, 2021. For the next year, the secretary of homeland security, with the concurrence of the secretary of state, has decided to: Add Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Cyprus, the Dominican Republic (currently only eligible for the H-2A program), Haiti, Mauritius, and Saint Lucia to the list of countries eligible to participate in the H-2A and H-2B programs; and No longer designate Moldova as an eligible country for the H-2A visa program because it no longer meets the regulatory standards for that program. However, Moldova’s eligibility for the H-2A program remains effective until Jan. 18, 2022.

DHS maintains its authority to add countries to the eligible countries lists at any time, and to decide not to redesignate any country at the end of the one-year period following the date of publication of a country’s last designation in the Federal Register, should DHS and DOS determine that a country fails to meet the requirements for continued designation. Examples of factors that could result in the exclusion of a country or the removal of a country from the list include fraud, abuse, denial rates, overstay rates, human trafficking concerns, and other forms of noncompliance with the terms and conditions of the H-2 visa programs by nationals of that country that are contrary to U.S. interest. The H-2A and H-2B visa programs allow U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary agricultural and nonagricultural jobs, respectively. Typically, USCIS approves H-2A and H-2B petitions only for nationals of countries that the secretary of homeland security has designated as eligible to participate in the programs. However, USCIS may approve H-2A and H-2B petitions, including those that were pending as of the date of the Federal Register notice, for nationals of countries not on the

list on a case-by-case basis only if doing so is determined to be in the interest of the United States. Effective Nov. 10, nationals of the following countries are eligible to receive H-2A and H-2B visas: Andorra, Fiji, Madagascar, Saint Lucia, Argentina, Finland, Malta, San Marino, Australia, France, Mauritius, Serbia, Austria, Germany, Mexico, Singapore, Barbados, Greece, Moldova, Slovakia, Belgium, Grenada, Monaco, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Guatemala, Mongolia, Solomon Islands, Brazil, Haiti, Montenegro, South Africa, Brunei, Honduras, Mozambique, South Korea, Bulgaria, Hungary, Nauru, Spain, Canada, Iceland, The Netherlands, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Chile, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, Colombia, Israel, Nicaragua, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Italy, North Macedonia, Taiwan, Croatia, Jamaica, Norway, Thailand, Republic of Cyprus, Japan, Panama, Timor-Leste, Czech Republic, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Turkey, Denmark, Latvia, Paraguay, Tuvalu, Dominican Republic, Liechtenstein, Peru, Ukraine, Ecuador, Lithuania, Philippines, United Kingdom, El Salvador, Luxembourg, Poland, Uruguay, Estonia, Portugal, Vanuatu and Romania.

Keep Healthy for the Holidays (Family Features) uring this year’s holidays, many families are looking forward to celebrating a closer-to-normal season. However, that means staying healthy and keeping all kinds of germs at bay, including seasonal cold and flu bugs. “With life getting back to normal, we are expecting a more severe cold and flu season than we encountered last year,” said Dr. Jennifer Caudle, family physician. “It’s important to both take preventative measures and stay prepared for keeping symptoms at bay. I recommend looking for over-the-counter medicines with active ingredients like dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, which help relieve both cough and chest congestion.” Practice good hygiene. Washing your hands has become a common refrain throughout the pandemic because it’s a simple and effective way to keep germs away, whether they’re of the global pandemic variety or a common cold. As you’re out shopping and mingling this holiday season, you’re likely to come into contact with more germ-laden surfaces than usual. Shopping carts, doors and public restrooms are major culprits, so carry sanitizer and be sure to give your hands a thorough wash when you get home. Treat symptoms. While addressing the

elbow if you don’t have a tissue, can be effective in preventing the spread of germs. Know when to consult a doctor. In most cases, minor cold symptoms don’t require a visit to the doctor (unless you think you may have been exposed to COVID-19 and need to arrange for testing). However, if symptoms don’t resolve within a week, grow worse in a short period of time or aren’t responding to over-the-counter medicines to ease your symptoms, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor or at least speak with a triage nurse for advice. Find more resources to help you prepare stay healthy for the holidays at Mucinex.com.

An option like Mucinex 12 HR Extended Release Tablets provides relief for 12 hours by helping thin and loosen mucus to relieve chest congestion. The tablets are also available in a DM formula, which provides relief for both wet and dry coughs. Protect your immune system. A healthy immune system helps your body fight off germs so you don’t get sick, or if you do come down with a cold or the flu, you may have a milder, shorter illness.

Getting plenty of rest, staying well hydrated, eating well-balanced and nutrientrich meals and getting plenty of regular physical activity can all help keep your body in good condition to fight off seasonal germs. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked. There’s hardly anything worse than waking in the middle of the night with a cough or sinus trouble and discovering your medicine cabinet is empty. Be proactive by restocking on over-the-counter basics to help keep your symptoms in check. It’s also a good idea to check the expiration dates of any medications you do have on hand and replace anything that is out of date. Be mindful of spreading germs. If you do get sick, you can take steps to protect your loved ones. If possible, stay home until your symptoms have passed and you’re less likely to be contagious. With great anticipation, the video will premiere on World A Reggae (worldareggae.com), Friday, November 12, 2021, followed by a wide release to online and TV outlets. The "Never Had a Dream Come True" visual is truly a family affair, as Shinehead's partner in life and business DJ Papalotl (Kingston 12 Hi Fi), sister Starfire and brother-inlaw Shango (both Reggae artists with a presence in Jamaica, U.S. and Japan) join him for memorable scenes. A young boy can also be spotted as the video's sweet storyline of making dreams come true progresses. Sunny Southern California serves as an ideal backdrop for the "Never Had a Dream Come" video. Pristine beaches and a variety of aerial views vividly capture West Coast beauty and give the video quite a "dreamscape" effect. As the video unfolds, Shinehead can be seen in solo shots and with his love enjoying life and nature. Released during the pandemic, the illustrious cover saw the "Jamaican in New York" singer return to the commercial music space to much fanfare from listening audiences, DJs, sound systems, radio and other media. Notably, Shinehead is known for electrifying and innovative music that transcends Reggae, Dancehall, R&B and Hip Hop genres and equally high caliber visuals. Much to his credit, Shinehead's legendary "Chain Gang" music video was the very first shown on the premiere episode of the cult classic "Yo MTV Raps" in 1988. The new visual is not all the "Chain Gang" crooner is celebrating this year, as it's the 30th Anniversary of the epic "Strive." The phenomenal song, which still moves the masses, bears a timeless and powerful message. Shinehead will release a special Anniversary edition of "Strive," which fans are going to love.

SPORTS Jamaica to host the 2022 Carifta Track & Field Championship

N

ACAC president Mike Sands has confirmed that Jamaica will host the 2022 Carifta Track and Field Championship from April 16-18. NACAC recently approached the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) about the island hosting the championship. The event was last held in 2019 and has been on a break since the onset of the Covid19 pandemic. Guyana was slated to host the 2022 championship but asked to be considered for 2023 instead after experiencing some challenges. Sands who was speaking on Hitz 92 FM's Sports Grill on Monday, added that a full scale staging of the championship is being planned for next year despite the possibility of Covid-19 protocols still being in place. The 2020 staging was set for Bermuda but was cancelled due to the pandemic. It was rescheduled for Bermuda this year but again had to be cancelled due to rigid Covid19 protocols implemented by the government in that island. Jamaica has previously hosted the Carifta Championship on six occasions with the last time being 2011 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Sports admin slams Caricom leaders

O

ne of the region’s leading sports administrators, Keith Joseph of St Vincent and the Grenadines, has criticized Caricom leaders for not doing enough for the development and growth of sports in the Caribbean. Joseph who is General Secretary of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) has criticized the leadership of Caricom for not taking a lead role to establish the region as a hub for sports tourism among other things.

O

lympic double sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah has been named as the NACAC Female Athlete of the Year. NACAC made the announcement on Sunday. Within the span of just over three days, between the end of July and early August, Thompson-Herah won two individual gold medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Her 100m win came in an Olympic

ith a full complement of players at his disposal for Nov 12 CONCACAF World Cup qualifier away to El Salvador. The Reggae Boyz were hampered by late player withdrawals for the October window of the World Cup Qualifiers resulting in the squad being reduced to 17 outfield players to choose from for the last game against Honduras. But, Reggae Boyz head coach Theodore "Tappa" Whitmore says things are looking positive for the encounter on Friday. Meanwhile, having not conceded in their last two World Cup qualifiers, Whitmore says he’s is looking to maintain that discipline for the match against El Salvador. The Reggae Boyz have conceded eight goals so far to be only better than bottom place Honduras and are sixth on five points, the same as El Salvador who have only two goals in qualification so far.

record time of 10.61 seconds, while her 200m victory four days later then yielded a national record time of 21.53 seconds. Shortly after her double Olympic triumph, which she topped off by winning the sprint relay with Jamaica in a national record 41.02 seconds, Thompson-Herah lined up at the Prefontaine Classic. She stamped her class with a run of 10.54 seconds, a new national record, and like her 200m Olympic win, the fastest time in the world since Florence Griffith-

Joyner's world record in 1988. Thompson-Herah went on to take her third Diamond League title, winning the women's 100m final in Zürich with a time of 10.65 seconds. Only five women this century have ended a season with the fastest times in both the 100m and 200m. Coming into the season, four of those five were Jamaicans. American Ryan Crouser was named NACAC Male Athlete of the Year.

NEW JERSEY NEWS Mother & Son Arrested on Fraud Charges Jersey City: anya M. Howard, 47, Jersey City, NJ and her son Trevon Howard, 26, Far Rockaway, Queens, New York have been charged with burglary, grand larceny and other crimes for allegedly assuming a prior owner’s identity in order to obtain false title papers and take possession of a home in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. The pair allegedly occupied the home on several occasions through September 2021, despite the rightful owners’ attempts to get them out. According to the charges, on several occasions in September 2021, the defendant Tanya M. Howard and her son Trevon allegedly forced their way into a house on Beach 15th Street near New Haven Avenue. The home already had two tenants, who were renting from the legitimate owners. As alleged, the female defendant claimed to own the two-story brick house. The Howards moved in with their belongings and appliances and took control of several rooms on the first floor of the home. The renters – including an elderly, disabled individual – were cut off from using parts of the house, including the kitchen and bathrooms. On September 2, 2021, defendant Tanya M. Howard exploited the similarity between her name and that of the prior owner – Tanya L. Howard – and allegedly filed for a new title in both her and her son’s names with the Department of Finance Business Center in Queens. The true owners of the property purchased the house from Tanya L. Howard in 2019 for $500,000. On September 18, 2021, the victims – a

Incumbent won New Jersey governor race New Jersey Democrat and incumbent Phil Murphy narrowly claimed victory over Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli in the state's Nov. 3 governor race. " Murphy won a second term in office after a tight race for governor. Murphy beat Ciattarelli by about 2.8 percentage points, bringing in 1,296,512votes, or roughly 51% of the vote, according to the Washington Post's live election updates. Ciattarelli received 1,225,506//votes, about 48.2% of the vote. An estimated 97% of votes had been counted by Nov. 9. Murphy is the first Democratic governor to win a consecutive second term in New Jersey in 44 years. There is no automatic recount law in New Jersey, but candidates are permitted to request one within 17 days of Election Day by filing a suit in State Superior Court in the counties where they want to contest tallies. Because of the close margins, conspiracy theorists quickly took to the internet to assert the election was stolen.

man and his mother who are the actual owners of the property – discovered the Howards and a third individual inside the house and contacted the police to remove them. When law enforcement arrived, defendant Tanya M. Howard refused to vacate the premises and continued to insist she was the rightful owner of the house. After being arrested, the defendants allegedly returned to the home and barged inside again refusing to cede occupancy. Then on September 29, 2021, the male homeowner discovered the defendants Tanya M. Howard, her son Trevon Howard and a teenager inside the house again. He called police and the pair were again arrested.
