Hurricane Dorian uprooted more than houses in the Bahamas I

f you have been paying close attention to hurricane times and seasons. It would be noticeable that around mid- August to late October, hurricanes are often in their developing stages or if not, in full effect in the islands and other areas. Recently, hurricane Dorian took the attention in the media and the airwaves when it traveled straight to The Bahamas. What happened next caught us all by surprise. Dorian went specifically to the island of Abaco and Grand Bahamas and stalled over the island for two days. This was a category 5 storm, the worst natural disaster to date to hit the island. With a wind speed of 183 mph over fifty people were killed and everything was left in ruins. Abaco Island is located about 55 miles (90km) north of Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas. Their economy is based mainly on tourism and citrus farming. This means due to the hurricane, all of their source of income and lifestyle were destroyed. Therefore, the government is hoping for much support and help from without to pick up the pieces. Another interesting thing about hurricane Dorian is that, it uprooted the flaw in their immigration system and inequality that lies in the midst of the storm. Even though Abaco is known for having a luxurious destination, it is also a place where a lot of poor people dwells. Some of these people are Haitians or of Haitian descent. People who are seen as a marginalized population within the Bahamian society. This storm exposes the intense inequality that the Haitians face living in the Bahamas and the constant fear of deportation, especially since the storm. Research shows that many have been treated unfairly and have been ostracized by many Bahamians because of their darker hue and their religious practices. Since the storm, many people lives have been unrivaled, which leads to the high fear of deportation from many of the Haitians and the Bahamian- born people of Haitian descent living on the island.

By Solemn_Vow editor@streethype.net Sadly the fear of reporting their missing family members makes it unclear to know the actually number of people who have died in the storm. Based on the above report, it is plain to see that the Bahamian government’s main focus is mainly for the pure blood citizens especially during this time of catastrophe. On the other hand, it was reported that many Bahamian refugees arrived at the shores of Florida in the US for help. According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security, in a statement said: “The U.S. Embassy in Nassau is open for emergency visa appointments and CBP Ports of Entry are prepared should Bahamians request to temporarily relocate to The United States.” Also, there are many people and countries who have to send supplies and foods to the island. I think the Bahamian government should take a page out of some of these leaders’ books especially when disaster strikes. Humanity is fragile and temporary therefore we should work to treat others with the same respect and compassion as we would want for ourselves.

NY sues ICE to stop courthouse arrests By Kimmy Blair Street Hype Writer ew York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit Wednesday against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, alleging the agency's practice of making arrests in and around Empire State courthouses violates the U.S. Constitution, federal law and state court rules. The arrests of undocumented immigrants in and around New York courthouses has skyrocketed by more than 1700% since Donald Trump became President, according to elected officials and advocacy groups. "The courthouse is no longer a place of safety and justice, it is a trap," said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. Now, they've filed two federal lawsuits against the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees Immigration and Customs enforcement. The suits argue ICE agents have arrested 400 undocumented immigrants, as well as those who are legally here, at courthouses since January 2017. State Attorney General

whole, making it harder for the state to carry out its critical law enforcement function," James said. They want a federal judge to order ICE to stop these sort of arrests. The Trump Administration has taken a hard stance on deporting undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes. The Brooklyn district attorney says he's had to drop cases because witnesses and victims are afraid to come forward. "Calls to our Immigrant Affairs unit, a unit tasked with assisting immigrants in our city, who are victims of crime have decreased by two-thirds from 2016," said Gonzalez. It’s easy for ICE to track down people they are looking for by accessing court records. The Legal Aid Society has often protested outside of courthouses when ICE arrests its clients.

The organization says a sex trafficking victim fighting a case decided to be locked up when she found out ICE was in the courtroom. "In order to have that person from being taken, we had to ask for bail because, in that moment, Rikers was more protective of her rights," said Tina Luongo from the Legal Aid Society. Homeland Security says it tries to avoid sensitive locations— places like hospitals, schools and houses of worship—when making arrests. Under current policy, a courthouse is not a sensitive location. Homeland Security says courthouse arrests are necessary because of the unwillingness of some jurisdictions to cooperate with ICE in transferring people from their jails and prisons. Advocates say the immigrants often arrested have committed minor crimes or violations.

Brooklyn Man Sentenced for Stealing Elderly Neighbor’s Home By Kimmy Blair Street Hype Reporter

A

Brooklyn man was on Sept 11 sentenced to five months in jail and five years’ probation for stealing and attempting to sell the home of his 85-year-old neighbor, a diabetic man for whom the defendant was a parttime caretaker.

Jordan Horsford, 29, was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun after the defendant pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny in June and consented to an order nullifying the fraudulent recorded deed. According to the investigation, in August 2016 the defendant, who was known to do odd jobs in the neighborhood, began helping the victim as needed, including carrying his wheelchair up steps and helping him get in and out of vehicles; he was paid for each task by the victim’s family. In April 2017, the victim’s family began paying the defendant $400 a week to accept Meals on Wheels deliveries and set them out for the victim, to make sure he took his medicine and to check in on him at night. Between June 19, 2017 and November 1, 2017, the defendant convinced the victim to sign away the deed to his home on Bar-

Jordan Horsford, 29 bey Street in East New York, Brooklyn. The defendant told the victim he risked losing his home if he did not sign a document, and had the document notarized by a notary. The defendant then realized he needed another document notarized, but the notary refused so the defendant cut and pasted her

original signature. He then recorded the deed, which had been signed over to him. Finally, the defendant attempted to sell the house almost immediately after securing the deed, but a title company suspected foul play and refused to insure the home. The would-be purchaser then reached out to the 85-year-old victim’s family. At around the same time, the victim’s daughter, while going through her father’s mail, found a letter from the Department of Finance notifying them about documents filed relating to the property. The daughter pursued the matter with the DOF and the case was ultimately referred to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office for further investigation and prosecution. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said “With today’s sentencing this defendant is being held accountable for preying on his elderly neighbor and abusing his trust. I urge seniors and their family members to protect their homes, especially as property values continue to rise in Brooklyn, by taking care not to sign any documents pertaining to their properties without the advice of a reputable attorney. I remain committed to prosecuting deed thefts like this and assisting all homeowners whenever possible.” -0-

US Supreme Court to hear Malvo’s murder case

New York, NY he United States Supreme Court is to make a decision in the case of Jamaican-born Lee Boyd Malvo, who at age 17 was sentenced to life without parole for his part in the infamous DC (District of Columbia) sniper case that claimed the lives of 10 people. “For 47 days in 2002, a thick pall of fear and tension hung over Washington and Virginia — and a traumatised nation — as the Jamaican teenager and a man whom he saw as a father figure, drove across the District shooting randomly at people on the street, eluding perplexed authorities before being finally caught. The youngster was said to have met his then mentor, John Allen Muhammad, in Antigua where he was allegedly left by his mother. He was subsequently taken to the US by Muhammad. Malvo, now 34, along with Muhammad, was convicted for the series of murders between September 5 and October 22 that year. Muhammad, who had served in the Louisiana National Guard before joining the regular US army and also served in Iraq in 1991, was executed in Virginia in 2009 for being the mastermind behind the rampage. The US 4th Circuit Court of Appeal in a 3-0 ruling last year June had ordered that Malvo be given a new sentencing hearing in Virginia for the murders he was convicted of committing there. The court cited a 2012 ruling in a similar case ‘Miller

The court also cited as a reason for its ruling the 8th Amendment of the US Constitution, which prohibits mandatory life without parole for juveniles, except in rare circumstances. The ruling to grant Malvo a new sentencing hearing is however being chal-

lenged, but it was not yet clear by whom. Prosecutors in Virginia had previously said they had met the requirements of the Supreme Court. The current case lists Randall Matthena, a warden, as the petitioner and Malvo as the respondent. Legal circles in the Jamaican community here are generally in doubt that the outcome would be favorable to Malvo, pointing to the dissenting opinion of Chief Justice John Roberts — now considered the swing vote on the Supreme Court — in the Miller case. In that opinion Roberts wrote: “A mandatory sentence of life without parole cannot be described as 'unusual' when a number of states support such sentencing schemes. While crimes committed by juveniles is tragic on many levels, neither the constitution nor the court's precedent prohibits mandatory life without parole for juvenile homicide offenders.”

The team beat Colombia 2-0 on penalties in the final after the match was tied 2-2 at full-time. The other teams in the competition were Venezuela, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. “Jamaica continues to show the rest of the world how good we can be in sports which are not traditional to us and I really want our Senior Men's Ice Hockey Team to know how proud we are of what they have accomplished on the ice,” Grange said. She also said the Jamaica Ice Hockey Federation must also be highly commended for the fine showing of the team.

Williams reprimanded with no period of ineligibilty Kingston, Jamaica WI: ouble World Under 20 sprint champion Briana Williams is now eligible to participate at the IAAF World Championships which gets underway in Doha, Qatar on Friday. This follows the ruling handed down by the Independent Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (IADP) which presided over her disciplinary hearing which ended on Tuesday. In a release on Thursday afternoon, the IADP said Williams who tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrchlorothiazide at the Senior National Championships in June, has been reprimanded without any period of ineligibility. The panel said it found that the ath-

acebook has gained exclusive digital content rights to the ICC's global events in the Indian subcontinent. The deal, which is set to run until 2023, will bring eight major ICC events - two Men's T20 World Cups (2020 and 2021), two Women's T20 World Cups (2020 and 2022), the 2021 Women's ODI World Cup, the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup, and the World Test Championship finals of 2021 and 2023 - onto the social networking platform. Financial details of the deal have not yet been disclosed. The TV rights for all ICC events until 2023 belong to Star, who signed an eightyear deal in 2015. Facebook will carry digital content including match recaps, key moments, and other feature content in the region across four years. As part of the deal, it will also carry post-match recaps for the rest of the world in this period. "The combination of one of the world's most-watched sports with one of the world's largest platforms is exciting for the future of our game," ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said. "The record-breaking growth in digital consumption at this summer's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup demonstrated the continued power of cricket to connect and engage more deeply with diverse audiences around the world.

lete has established no significant fault or negligence as she was given tablets by her gaurdian and had no intention to cheat in her in-competition sprint event on June 21. However, the panel noted that Williams was in breach of article 2.1 of the 2015 AntiDoping Rules as she had a specified substance in her body. Williams' coach Ato Boldon said: “I’m satisfied that the panel came to the right decision based on the evidence and based on what the IAAF rules and the WADA code is. I wouldn't want what Briana has endured at her age to happen to my worst enemy," said Boldon who also confirmed that Williams will travel to Doha for the World Championships.

County jails can no longer check immigration status of inmates New Jersey: ounty jails in New Jersey will no longer be allowed to check on the immigration status of inmates under a new order issued by Attorney General

C

Gurbir Grewal. The directive ends the federal agreement between local law enforcement agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Grewal’s directive is be-

lieved to be in response to an ongoing dispute between the Democrat and the Republican sheriffs of Monmouth and Cape May counties. "I've concluded that these agree-

ments undermine public trust without enhancing public safety and that any of their purported benefits are already achieved through our Immigrant Trust Directive,” Grewal said Friday.

Adams’ nonprofit organization the Team Adams Foundation held the online raffle. It’s not clear how many teachers entered the contest. He initially wanted to pick 25 winners, but ended up picking 50. “Teachers give of themselves every day, and often make personal sacrifices in order to provide their students a suitable learning environment,” said assistant superintendent Cicely Warren, who was present at the dollar store along with other district officials and mayor Andre Sayegh.

BEAUTY CARE

Ways to attract clients to your salon or spa A

re you looking to get more clients to walk in the door of your salon or spa? Marketing is probably the number one concern for salon owners as it can seem impossible and quite expensive at times. If you are not getting enough clients, chances are you need to switch up your promotion tactics and kick it up a notch. Here are some great ideas to attract more clients to your salon or spa: 1. Introduce a solid loyalty program. A great loyalty program can win the hearts of your potential clients. If you currently have a program, try spicing it up and making it more worthy for your customers. A great loyalty program can be simple; schedule three haircuts, get one half off. Rewarding your clients with a point system or some sort of a giveback will ensure they’ll come back to your salon. 2. Start networking more. Don’t be scared to go out there and network. Websites like Meetup have several networking groups in various areas, and some are even free to join. Bring plenty of business cards and introduce your own company or the one you represent. It is a proven way to build your book of business. The truth is…networking really works! 3. Ask for referrals. Most of us don’t like to ask for business, but if you have a happy client, shouldn’t they spread your name around? We know that most clients will, but sometimes they get so busy with their daily routine that they simply forget about you. Instead of waiting for referrals, send out a few e-mails to your VIP clients who love you but have not sent any referrals your way. Keep it short and to the point. The key is… don’t be afraid to ask. This strategy can also be true for past clients who haven’t been to your spa in months. This is your chance to reconnect with them and have them come in for a service. 4. Capture leads. If you don’t have a contact form on your website, get one immediately. You could have hundreds of web visitors who want to hire your salon or spa services but can’t get in touch with you. Perhaps the customer prefers filling out their information through a contact widget instead of giving you a call right away. If you don’t do this, the potential client can just leave your website and never come back. A great way to capture leads is to offer an eBook, a guide, or a free consultation. 5. Start blogging. Offering free advice

through a personal or company blog will always be appreciated by your readers. This is a long term strategy that involves offering ideas, feedback, or just plain advice. This is a proven approach to building new relationships and acquiring business over time. Though this approach does take time to build, you can establish yourself as the expert in your industry and become the one to follow. An even better approach to blogging would be to guest blog on a leading online spa magazine and get a tremendous amount of feedback (and quite possibly clients) through their existing readership. 6. Partner with other agencies. This

goes back to networking. If you meet the right people who can refer your services through their company, you can partner up with them. Perhaps you know a salon owner who doesn’t offer massage services, a service that you provide. If you have a good relationship with that salon owner, they may be inclined to refer you. When the right client comes along who does not fit your scope of services, you could return the favor and refer them back to that salon. It’s a win-win situation for both businesses. 7. Use social media heavily. Social media is a free and powerful advertising tool.

Create a lasting impression on your followers. Share your work on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. Got a new haircut style? Share an image on your social media platform and watch the engagement grow. This is a great way to stay in front of your customers and reach an untapped pool of new clients. Want to know the best approach for spas on social media? Running a contest. Any raffle or competition of sorts can possibly increase your customer base tenfold. If you are not convinced, check out some of the most successful Facebook contests that skyrocketed with results. Source: www.millenniumsi.com/

RELATIONSHIP

Tired of being in the Friend zone? Here’s what to do By Susan Winter re you stuck in the friend zone? It’s a rotten position to hold when you’d prefer to be the “lover.” Making the shift to internal freedom requires a grounded method that feels comfortable and secure. It’s empowering and nonthreatening. Here are the steps to take when you’re ready to leave the friend zone and move forward: 1. Speak Up: Speaking up and owning your truth is the hallmark of empowerment and confidence. Courage and conviction show you know yourself and have the internal strength to speak your mind, without fear. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If love is your goal, better to take the chance to attain it than stand by sadly, mute and frustrated, as you watch your friend date others. 2. Use “The Monologue” approach: “The Monologue” approach is a term I use for a onesided series of statements. Here’s where you make an admission of your feelings. This strategy is highly effective, as it’s not activating a discussion that requires a response.

A

It’s a monologue. Therefore, it eliminates the tension of “hunting” for the recipient’s approval or acceptance. 3. Begin with a statement of fact: The beauty of a ‘statement of fact’ is that it’s pure information. Admitting your feelings is no different than saying, “The sky is blue today.” Your friend may be surprised and need time to adjust to this new input. Perhaps they had no idea you felt this way. Remember, it’s just information.

4. Make it short: Boil your statement down to three or four definitive sentences, max. Get to the point and shut up. Don’t elaborate. Don’t explain. Don’t plead or bargain. Again, you’re not waiting for a response. You’re simply stating the facts... with the same tone as warmly placing an order for a meal. Directly, confidently and without hesitation. 5. Don’t play the “sex card:” If you tell your friend they’re hot, sexy and you can’t stop thinking about how they’d be

in bed... you’ll shoot yourself in the foot. This frames your intention in the wrong light. The better approach is to highlight the qualities you admire in them and the characteristics they have that inspire your affection. 6. Don’t ask how they feel about what you’ve said, or if they find you attractive: This is a cardinal rule! Never, ever, give another person the power to validate your worth. Asking shows you doubt your value. It’s a sign that you’re begging for their approval. There’s nothing sexy about weakness and a lack of confidence. 7. Look them directly in the eyes when delivering “The Monologue.”: If this conversation must be made via the phone, make sure there is a pause in the conversation to allow for the power of your statement: Flipping from a friend to lover doesn’t work in a text or email. It may seem like the easy way out, but don’t do it. You will fail. They need to either see your face or feel the warmth and conviction in your voice to make your statement work.

8. Once you’ve made your statement, take a long beat: You want to punctuate the power of your admission. Then, resume your former conversation or activity. Your friend won’t hear what you’re saying, anyway. They’re still processing the new information. This shows your special friend that their response is irrelevant. 9. Let it go: You’ve made your statement. You’ve presented your information. The trick is to now let it go. Don’t belabor their response or question how they feel about you and the revelation of this new input. It’s tempting to worry that your friendship may be damaged as a result of this admission. But think it through. Were you really happy staying locked in the friend zone? 10. Continue to be yourself with this person, as before: Your friend needs time to process this information. No pressure, and no demanding an answer on your end. They now have the information they need to assess the situation. Stay calm and let the winds blow between you.

It’s always a big night when you have a little blue pill.
