EDITORIAL

Religious believers must demonstrate tolerance and respect N ew York City on Oct. 31 experienced another act of terrorism that caused the death of eight people and injured 11. Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbekistan who is also a husband and the father of three, was charged with the atrocious crime. The families, friends of the victims, and indeed the people of New York City, will never forget the vicious and brutal attack on innocent and harmless people, most of whom were visiting the City for the first time. For the victims, it was about celebrating and having fun in one of the most prosperous and safest cities in the world. Saipov is among a growing list of terrorists being motivated by their Islamic religion, politics or just a plain old-fashioned, cold-blooded and heartless desire to hurt innocent people. Despite intense security measures, including intelligence

support, thousands of misguided religious extremists, who are said to be motivated by the Islamic State in Iraq (ISIS), are seeking opportunities to hurt ordinary people -mainly in US and Europe. These merciless terrorists will do anything to kill Americans, Christians and other “Western” nationals in the name of “Allah.” Equally, hundreds of Muslims are always on a suicidal mission to destroy with compassion, gratification, and claim to be carrying out Allah’s purpose. Muslims consider the Quran (Koran), their holy book, which contains over 100 passages that call on Muslims to take up arms against un-

believers in the name of Allah. “Kill them [unbelievers] wherever you find them… And fight them until there is no more unbelief and worship is for Allah alone” (Quran 2:191193). “Strike off their heads and strike from them every fingertip” (Quran 8:12). However, these passages could have various interpretations. Most Muslims have been preaching that “Islam is a religion of peace” and that Islam “does not tolerate wanton murder.” Other experts on the religion claim that the resentfulness and bitterness towards Americans and other non-muslim countries are also not in keeping with the religion.

On the contrary, in this era of modern civilization and technological advancements, we have no choice but to respect and tolerate the religious beliefs of everyone. Eighty-three percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians. Most of the rest, 13 percent, have no religion. That leaves just 4 percent as adherents of all non-Christian religions combined — Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists. We are living a society with various cultures and lifestyles, which are influenced by several religious convictions. Therefore, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and people with no religion will have to share the limited space with tolerance and respect in keeping with the laws of America.

We want justice for Memorial Field!

S

Dear Editor: ince 2014, I have critically questioned the situation at Memorial Field in Mount Vernon. Between demands for transparency and countless community meetings, organizing for action on restoring glory at our sacred park has remained one of my top priorities. The state of decay at Memorial Field is representative of the state of local government dysfunction. It represents how far we have fallen from athletic grace. It describes how much work we must do to bring our community back. For years we have impatiently waited for the moment to bring justice to those that were involved with destroying our park. Based on recent admissions, we can finally start an aggressive pursuit for justice for Memorial Field. On November 3rd, subpoenas were issued to former Mayor Ernie Davis, Comptroller Maureen Walker, City Councilman Marcus Griffith, John Royce, Nicolas Cichetti, Anthony Bove and others in connection with the illegal toxic dumping that occurred at Memorial Field. The subpoenas, issued in conjunction with a particular proceeding filed in the Supreme Court of Westchester, are necessary to preserve evidence and identify potential defendants. We all know the sad story of the crimes that were committed at Memorial Field - the bribery, the illegal dumping of over 12,000 cubic yards of construction debris and other materials containing contaminated substances. The recent news reports that a "handshake deal" by the prior administration was responsible for the toxic dirt at the field is heartbreaking, frustrating, and requires a response. We have called upon the contractor that was paid over $1 million to demolish the grandstands to come back and finish the job, at no

cost to the taxpayer. It's time to bring those responsible to justice! It's time for them to come clean about what happened at our par. We have lost the opportunity to make beautiful family memories, to walk on our track, to play and come together as a commu- Richard Thomas nity. When I entered office as Mayor, I had every expectation that the City Council and Comptroller would work collaboratively with me to fix Memorial Field. At this point, lawsuits are the only option available to successfully get to the truth; for a community to receive economic and restorative justice. The cost to clean-up and fix Memorial Field will run into the millions of dollars. We,

White freshman Accused of poisoning her Jamaican roommate with used tampons

A

Hartford, Connecticut: white Connecticut college student has been charged with smearing body fluids on her black roommate's belongings, and police are saying it was a bias crime. Brianna Brochu, a freshman at the University of Hartford, Connecticut was last Wednesday arrested and charged with criminal mischief, breach of peace and intimidation based on bigotry, after rubbing used tampons on her bag, pouring moldy clam dip in her face lotion, putting her toothbrush in her rectum and spitting in her coconut oil. She is currently out on bail. West Hartford police also asked a judge to add a felony bigotry charge. University of Hartford officials confirmed that Brochu was expelled after her “deeply disturbing” behavior.“She will not be returning to the institution,” said University President Greg Woodward. "The accused student's behavior was reprehensible and does not reflect the values of our institution," Woodward said in a statement to the campus community Tuesday. "The incident has brought about accusations of racism, and I want you to know that I hear and share your anger and frustration. Acts of racism, bias, bullying, or other abusive

spoon because she was frustrated with her roommate's rude behavior. Brochu denied other actions she wrote about on Instagram, including that she put her roommate's toothbrush "where the sun doesn't shine." Brochu allegedly wrote in an Instagram post, "Finally did it yo girl got rid of her roommate!! After 1½ month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotions... putting her toothbrush places where the sun doesn't shine, and so much more I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie." The roommate, Chennel Rowe, said in a Facebook video that she had a tense relationship with Brochu and moved to another room about two weeks ago. Rowe, from New York City, said other students told her about Brochu's social media postings, and she realized the contamination of her personal items may have caused the extreme throat pain she was suffering. She also said that university officials were at first slow to respond and threatened to remove her from campus if she talked about what happened.

Suspect charged with terrorism

T

By Kimmy Blair, Street Hype Writer he suspect in last Tuesday’s deadly New York City truck attack appears to have been inspired by violent Isis videos depicting beheadings and shootings, according to prosecutors. Sayfullo Saipov was taken to the New York federal courthouse in a wheelchair, handcuffed and with his feet shackled on Wednesday, shortly after the charges were announced at a press conference. The 29-year-old was charged with providing material support to a terrorist group and violence and destruction of motor vehicles. The details of the charges were outlined in criminal complaint filed Wednesday by the US attorney for the southern district court of New York. Prosecutors said in the complaint that Saipov planned the attack for Halloween because he knew more people would be out on the streets. It was the deadliest terrorist act in New York City since 9/11. Saipov drove a rented Home Depot truck down a bike lane intentionally, killing eight and injuring 12 before crashing into a school bus, exiting and being shot in the stomach by a New York City police department officer. He had planned to continue the attack for several more miles to the Brooklyn Bridge. According to the complaint, Saipov was inspired by Isis videos he watched on his cellphone and began planning an attack in the US almost a year ago and had rented a truck on 22 October to practice making turns.

96-year-old retired priest and one-time senior official of the Archdiocese of New York had a trove of child pornography on his computer and showed it to others at the retirement home for priests where he lived, prosecutors alleged on Tuesday. Monsignor Harry Byrne faces 37 counts of possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child, Bronx D.A. Darcel Clark said in a statement. He allegedly had dozens of photos of girls as young as 8 either posing naked or engaged in sex acts with men. Prosecutors also allege that Byrne viewed the images "in front of many individuals" at the St. John Vianney Center for Retired Priests, where he lives. "People at the defendant's residence were subjected to it when they entered his room," Clark said.

Byrne's attorney said the priest was currently being cared for in a medical facility. "Monsignor Byrne has dedicated 72 years to charity and church with an unsullied history. He was ordained in 1945. It is difficult to imagine that at the age of 96+, this stellar member of the priesthood knowingly understood and is responsible for the content of the subject on a computer accessible to numerous people," his attorney said in a statement. Monsignor Harry Byrne, 96, appears at his arraignment in Bronx Supreme Court on Oct. 31.

Council votes to repeal law banning dancing at most nightspots

t is now legal to dance at nightclubs and bars as the New York City Council on Tuesday voted to repeal a 91-year-old law that banned dancing at most nightspots. Originally passed during prohibition, the city's cabaret law made dancing inside establishments illegal without a license. It was done to regulate speakeasies and jazz bars.

Of the more than 20,000 bars and restaurants in the city, fewer than 100 had a cabaret license. Brooklyn City Councilman Rafael Espinal, who sponsored the measure, said the Cabaret Law has long been used to target specific communities. Jamaican Muslin el-Faisal facing further investigation

A

Kingston, Jamaica WI: bdullah el-Faisal, a controversial Jamaica based Muslim cleric, is facing further investigation for his alleged links to terrorism. Reports have surfaced in India that the Gujarat Anti-terrorist Squad has discovered social media conversations between two arrested Islamic State (IS) operatives and elFaisal.

Abdullah el-Faisal

It is said that the operatives discussed weapons, jihad, and Islamic State. The IS operatives have been identified as Kasim Stimberwala, a lab technician in India and Ubed Baig Mirza, an Indian lawyer. It's reported that they were in touch with el-Faisal, a radical preacher, through Facebook and WhatsApp, and were planning to move to Jamaica. Anti-Terrorist Squad sources said the duo's Facebook account was blocked for using radical words during their conversation with the Jamaican Muslim Cleric. A Squad official said India's Ministry of Home Affairs will be contacted to coordinate with Jamaican authorities for facilitating interrogation of the radical preacher based in Jamaica. The US Government has reportedly submitted to the Jamaica authorities evidence it claims links Abdullah el Faisal to terrorism. The cleric was arrested in August on an extradition warrant. Extradition proceedings against him are scheduled to commence on December 14 in the St Andrew Parish Court. The US Government has accused him of recruiting persons to join terror group, Islamic State from his base in Jamaica. US prosecutors say they have him on tape recruiting an undercover New York cop to join ISIS. Abdullah el Faisal, a former Imam in Britain was deported to Jamaica a few years ago, following his conviction for terrorism in the UK. He migrated to the UK as a youth and it was there that he converted to Islam.

Quebec bars people with face coverings from getting public services

Q

Quebec, Canada: uebec's lawmakers passed a bill Wednesday that would require public workers and citizens seeking government services to have their faces uncovered. Bill 62 would affect whether Muslim women could wear religious face covering such as a niqab or burqa on government jobs or when they receive government services. The Liberal government's bill on religious neutrality was passed in Quebec's National Assembly, reported CBC, CNN partner. The bill needs the lieutenant-governor's assent to become law in the province. "We are just saying that for reasons linked to communication, identification and safety, public services should be given and received with an open face," said Premier Philippe Couillard of Quebec. "We are in a free and democratic society. You speak to me, I should see your face, and you should see mine. It's as simple as that." Bill 62 was sponsored by Quebec Justice Minister Stéphanie Vallée, who said people's faces should be uncovered for "communication reasons, identification reasons and security reasons." "As long as the service is being rendered, the face should be uncovered," Vallée told the CBC on Monday. The bill has its share of critics, including many Muslim groups that say it targets and

stigmatizes Muslim women who wear faceconcealing veils. A niqab covers the woman's face except for the area around the eyes. A burqa covers the entire face and has a mesh over the eyes. Vallée said Bill 62 doesn't specifically target religious symbols, as the law would also apply to masked protesters. "We're talking about having the face uncovered. It's not what is covering the face," she told the CBC. The niqab and burka are not mentioned in the legislation, according to CBC. But the debate over the bill has turned to what would happen to Muslim women wearing a niqab or a burqa who ride on public transit. The National Council of Canadian Muslims slammed the bill's passage, saying it "boils down to ugly identity politics" before the provincial election next year. "By tabling this discriminatory legislation, the Quebec government is advancing a dangerous political agenda on the backs of minorities," the rights group's executive director, Ihsaan Gardee, said in a statement.

Uncles sentenced to life for raping 10-year-old girl

A

MUMBAI, India: n Indian court on Thursday sentenced to life in prison two Indian men who were convicted of raping their 10-year-old niece in a case that caused a global furor when the girl was denied an abortion and had to give birth earlier this year. A fast-track court in the northwestern city of Chandigarh also imposed a fine of 350,000 rupees ($5,416) each on the two men, who are brothers. “This is an appropriate punishment for such a heinous crime and should be a strong deterrent,” said Sangita Vardhan, head of the Chandigarh Child Welfare Committee that is counseling the girl, who continues to live with her parents. “That the conviction and sentencing took place so quickly is encouraging,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The girl was 30 weeks pregnant in July when the court turned down her abortion plea as she was too far advanced. Indian law does not allow terminations after 20 weeks unless the mother’s life is in danger. The girl did not know she was pregnant and was unaware she delivered a baby girl in August as her parents told her she was undergoing stomach surgery to remove a stone. The baby was put up for adoption. The girl, whose identity has been kept secret, initially told police and child welfare activists that she had been raped several times by the first uncle, who is aged in his 40s. But after DNA tests did not link him to the baby, police began searching for more suspects and a second uncle was arrested. An increasing number of such cases have come to the courts in recent years, with as many as 10,854 cases of child rape reported in India in 2015, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. In May, a court allowed another 10year-old girl allegedly raped by her stepfather to undergo an abortion.

New USCIS Policy Creates Obstacles for Employers and Foreign Workers

By Leslie Dellon www.immigrationimpact.com n a major reversal of longstanding policy, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has created new and unnecessary hurdles for employers and foreign employees temporarily working in the United States. In the past, USCIS followed a streamlined approach when employers filed petition extensions. Now, USCIS officers will be encouraged to redetermine every petition extension as if it was a new filing. The abrupt policy change makes the bureaucratic process even more time-consuming and costly for employers and creates more uncertainty for them and their foreign workers. For more than 13 years, USCIS followed a commonsense policy when deciding whether to grant foreign workers the opportunity to extend their employmentbased nonimmigrant status. Under the former approach, a USCIS officer could defer to an earlier petition approval if the same employer was filing an extension petition for the same worker and there was no change in circumstances since the first approval. Doing away with this more efficient process will impact extensions of employment-based nonimmigrant visa status, such as H-1B, L-1 and O-1. Under the new policy, USCIS officers will essentially be redetermining every petition extension anew. This is an unnecessary change as there were already safeguards in place to prevent improper extensions. When the initial petition is filed, the employer has the burden to present sufficient evidence to establish that the requirements for the visa classification have been satisfied. Importantly, under the former policy, USCIS would not defer to the original finding of eligibility if there was a material error in the initial approval, a substantial change in circumstances, or new material

information that adversely impacted eligibility. Contrary to the government’s claim for the policy change, the petitioner was required to meet the burden of proof throughout the entire extension process—USCIS only gave deference if the evidence remained sufficient. Moreover, an initial grant was by no means a guarantee of an extension of that benefit. USCIS’ rejection of the longstanding deference policy likely will result in more employers being more frequently subjected to unnecessary requests for documentation after filing petition extensions. All employers and workers are protected when the agency makes decisions according to the objective requirements of the law, rather than suggesting that USCIS officers have unfettered discretion to deny employment-based petitions. Their discretion is not absolute as federal courts have overturned USCIS denials of employmentbased petitions when the agency failed to

connect its decision in a rational way to the evidence in the record. Courts also have reversed USCIS denials of petitions to extend employment-based nonimmigrant status where the agency failed to explain why the prior approval was wrongly decided. The Trump administration also continues to mislead the public by linking policy changes such as these to its Buy American Hire American initiative. This new policy is part of a pattern by the administration to pit American workers against foreign workers in an “us vs. them” scenario. Employment is not a zero sum game. We all benefit from a competitive economy where businesses employ qualified foreign and American workers.

Basketball returns to Westchester Community College

W Caribbean-Roots Tennis Pro and US Open Champ

A

SLOANE STEPHENS

FLUSHING: 24-year-old tennis pro, whose roots extend to the Caribbean, has won the 2017 women’s finals of the US Open and her first Grand Slam title. Sloane Stephens, whose grandfather was born in the Caribbean island of Trinidad & Tobago, created history Saturday in Flushing, NY, by beating Madison Keys, 6-3, 6-0 on to win the US Open. The Plantation, Fl-born 83rd rank Stephens won 16 of 20 points she served in the first set and didn’t face a single break point until 50 minutes into the final, deep in the

second set. She is the first ever known Caribbean roots US Open champ. Stephens, who spent a lot of time with her grandfather, who grew up poor in Trinidad, then won a scholarship to Howard University and became a doctor in the United States, commented after: “I should just retire now.” Stephens won despite the odds of sitting out 11 months with a left foot stress fracture until this year’s Wimbledon. “BEST. DAY. EVER,” the 24-year-old tweeted after the match.

West Indies win series after drawn Zimbabwe Test

A

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe: n obstinate stand of 91 between Regis Chakabva and Graeme Cremer secured Zimbabwe's first draw in Test cricket since 2005, leaving the West Indies to settle for a 1-0 series victory at Queens Sports Club recently. The West Indies were on course to win the second Test on the final day when Sikandar Raza's dismissal for 89 left Zimbabwe on 210 for seven, leading by just 88 runs with nearly 64 overs still left to play. But Chakabva and Cremer combined in an unbroken stand for the eighth wicket that chewed up nearly 50 overs, leaving West Indies Coach Stuart Law frustrated at the slow, placid nature of a Queens Sports Club pitch that permitted just 27 wickets in five days.

“I'd just like to see a more even contest between bat and ball,” said Law. “There are a lot of people saying that Test cricket is dying, and on a pitch like this it is.” Both sides had an outside chance of forcing a result when Zimbabwe went into the final day on 140 for four in their second innings, leading by 18 runs. But Zimbabwe's hopes narrowed when they lost Peter Moor for 42 in the fourth over of the day, particularly with man of the match Raza tiring from his efforts. The all-rounder became just the second player after South Africa's Jacques Kallis to score 80 or more runs in both innings of a Test and take a five-wicket haul, but was ultimately undone by a vicious inswinger from Jason Holder after lunch.

With Win Over Monroe College On Thursday, Nov. 2

Patrick Hennessey Contributing Writer estchester Community College welcomed the return of men’s basketball with a home win over Monroe College (Monroe Express) on November 2. When all was said and done, it was a terrific basketball game for the Vikings. Over forty exciting minutes of dramatic end-to-end play with fans in a packed, raucous gym roaring at every turn, this was a sweet victory for the home team to open the season. For the administration, staff, and student-athletes who worked tirelessly to make the Westchester Community College Men's Basketball team a reality this season, it was the culmination of years of exhaustive planning and preparation. Ultimately, it was a night during which the entire community claimed victory. When the Vikings closed out a 101-74 win over visiting Monroe College, the applause, hugs, and handshakes meant one thing: Westchester Community College Men's Basketball was back. After several seasons of dormancy, the Vikings opened the 201718 season 1-0, and can now go about the business of redeveloping a program capable of competing with the very best in Region XV. The game opened with a defensive stand that saw sophomore Tremaine Frasier steal an errant Monroe pass, and blast down the middle of the court for an uncontested lay-up to give Westchester a lead. From there, the Vikings dominated, opening up a 10-2 run that never let up. Westchester led by more than 20 points during parts of the opening half, and withstood a Monroe (0-1) run to take a 56-39 lead into halftime. Any hope of a Monroe comeback was thwarted early in the second half as the Vikings overcame a constant Monroe full-court trap, and virtually ran Monroe out of the gym. As time wound down, the only drama remaining was whether or not Westchester Community College’s team would break 100 points, which they did when Derrick Hamlin converted a three-pointer from the cor-

ner with just under a minute of play. Frasier led Westchester with 19 points, while sophomore Brandon Martin added 14 points, and Hamlin chipped in 12. The Vikings dominated all statistical categories, and shot an incredible 14 for 17 from the free throw line. Westchester returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 5 when they host Jefferson Community College for a 1:00 p.m. start at the gym on the Valhalla campus. “This season promises

to be an enriching experience for many of our students, not only those who field the team,” says Dr. Belinda S. Miles, President, Westchester Community College. “The student athletes now have an opportunity to showcase their skills on the court, while their fellow students are now able to show their enthusiasm and exhibit school spirit during the season. This will truly enhance the overall college experience for all,” she adds.

Takkas, who pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering conspiracy, played a relatively minor role in the massive football scandal compared to Webb, helping to launder $3 million in bribes his boss took during his time at the helm of CONCACAF. Takkas has already served some ten months in custody when he was held in Switzerland after his ar-

rest in May 2015 and his lawyers were hopeful he would actually serve no more than a few weeks in a US prison. The court also ordered him to pay $3 million restitution, along with Webb, who pleaded guilty in November 2015 to much more serious charges and who is expected to be sentenced in January.

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: Costas Takkas, 61, the former general secretary of the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA), has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for his part in the FIFA corruption scandal. He worked as Jeffrey Webb’s attaché when the former CIFA president was also vice president of FIFA.

More Jamaican Lottery Scammers Plead Guilty

F

NORTH DAKOTA: our more Jamaicans have thrown in the towel in the US courts, pleading guilty to their involvement in a lottery scam that bilked at least 90 Americans out of more than US$5.7 million. Dario Palmer, Alrick McLeod and Kazrae Gray all pleaded guilty to conspiracy under deals with federal prosecutors, while Kimberly Hudson signed a deal and is scheduled to plead guilty on November 20. No sentencing date has been set as yet. Their guilty pleas bring to 10 the number of defendants who have admitted to the crime. Another accused is negotiating terms of a deal, according to the Associated Press. In return for the guilty pleas, the government is dropping fraud and money laundering counts. The suspects are accused of calling victims about bogus lottery winnings, persuading them to send advance fees to receive the purported winnings, then keeping the money without paying out anything to the victims. The latest four to plead guilty were among eight Jamaicans who were extradited from Jamaica to North Dakota to face the lottery fraud charges. The charges allege the scam bilked mostly elderly US residents.

By Derrick Scott Contributing Writer amaica’s Ambassador to the United States (US), Audrey Marks, is inviting Israelis to explore investment opportunities in Jamaica. Ambassador Marks, who addressed members of the B’nai B’rith International Center for Human Rights and Public Policy at its headquarters in Washington DC recently, urged members who have an interest in trade and investment to organise a delegation to Jamaica to look at prospects in the areas of information and communications technology

(ICT), agro-processing, medical tourism and infrastructure development. “Avenues through which partnerships between Jamaican and Israeli investors could be forged could also be explored,” she pointed out. She also offered to help organise a similar mission of Jamaican investors to Israel. “Ladies and gentlemen, Jamaica is open and ready for business. Over the last five years, a stable economy has been maintained. Jamaica was listed as having the best-performing stock market in the world in 2015 and was

rated as being among the 10 most improved economies in the world. The (2015) Forbes Best Countries for Business Report has improved Jamaica’s ranking from 64th to 59th for ease of doing business, and the number-one country in the Caribbean for doing business,” the Ambassador pointed out. She noted that Jamaica is considering establishing a Jamaican diaspora bond, like that of the highly successful Israeli Diaspora bond, and would welcome any guidance or support that can be offered “as we seek to undertake this endeavour.”

REBNY: A Plague On New Yorkers

16 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • OCT 19-31-NOV 1-18, 2017

P

By Shirley Irons Contributing Writer rominent labor and human rights advocate, Ray Rogers, has launched a counterattack against the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) asserting that REBNY more appropriately stands for Real Estate Bullies of New York. Rogers claims, "REBNY's top policymakers are a cartel of billionaire bullies and racketeers.” Their abuse of political power is at the core of NYC's lack of affordable housing and homeless crisis leaving 62,000 living in shelters and thousands more in the streets. Rogers says these conditions are exacerbated by REBNY orchestrated rezoning plans leading to “hyper-gentrification on steroids.” Millions of residents face displacement and thousands of small businesses are shutting down, Rogers explains, "as profit-driven landlords and property speculators are charging exorbitant rents and finding more ways to evict renters from their apartments, shops and offices." Rogers says "REBNY corrupts our political system by feeding compliant politicians with fat campaign contributions to see things their way." Two glaring examples are REBNY's large contributions to the Independent Democratic Committee (IDC), eight Democratic state senators who vote with Republicans to assure rent stabilization and rent control laws are weakened and REBNY's developers can continue to rake in billions in corporate welfare subsidies and tax abatements. Rogers points out how NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City

(SBJSA).until they became mayor and speaker and raked in contributions from big real estate interests. The SBJSA has never been voted on

even though the majority of the City Council supports it. REBNY and its developers, Rogers claims, have led the assault

on organized labor so that unionfree construction sites will proliferate and become the norm. Rogers points out that more work is going to non-union contractors, even while union members are giving more and more concessions. Union workers are well-trained in their trade and safety procedures and receive far better pay and benefits. It's no coincidence that 29 of 31 construction workers who died on the job in NYC in 2015-2016 worked on non-union sites often dubbed "construction sweatshops." REBNY's developers leading the charge against unions saying union workers are too costly, include Stephen Ross (net worth $7.6 billion), of Related Companies, Rob and Jerry Speyer (net worth $3.9 billion) of Tishman Speyer and Jed and David Walentas (net worth $2.1 billion) of Two Trees Management! Undercover prostitution sting in Paterson nets 10 arrests

A Fetty Wap arrested for drink driving

T

New York City: he 26-year-old rapper has reportedly been arrested for 15 charges including drag racing, driving under the influence (DUI), driving without a valid licence and speeding after he was pulled over by police in the early hours of Friday morning. Law enforcement sources have told gossip website TMZ that the 'My Way' hitmaker was allegedly driving at speeds of 100mph in a 50mph zone on a New York City highway while racing another driver. It is claimed when he was stopped he handed an officer an expired New Jersey driver's licence, failed a field sobriety test and blew a 0.9, which is just above the legal limit. Earlier this year, Fetty - whose real name is Willie Maxwell II - was robbed in New Jersey, having a chain and an unspecified amount of cash taken. Police were dispatched to the scene in Patterson in the early hours of the morning amid reports shots had been fired during a fight. But the singer was said to have later refused to file an official complaint, with sources close to the 'My Way' hitmaker saying he didn't want to get involved in the incident, which saw three people injured. He is said to have thought it was better to let the "streets handle his feud" with Raheem Thomas, who was arrested on gun charges after he flashed Fetty's stolen 1738 chain on his Instagram.

PATERSON: n undercover prostitution sting targeting those who patronize the city’s illegal sex workers yielded the arrest of 10 “Johns” from around the area, police announced Saturday. The Paterson Police Narcotics & Vice Division conducted the undercover operation on Nov. 3 in two city locations – the corner of Van Houten and Auburn, and the corner of E. 25th Street and 19th Avenue, according to Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale. Arrested during the sting were Sakib Razzak, 26, of Paterson; Moshe Schori, 66,

of Bronx, New York; Brian Sierens, 32, of Wayne; Joseph Solari, 31, of Wayne; Justin Floyd, 22, of Prospect Park; Jerardo Florez, 33, of Passaic; William Simmon, 71, of Hasbrouck Heights; Wojtek Kolkowski, 38, of Wallington; and Felipe Maldonado, 46, of Haverstraw, New York. The suspects arrested were transported to headquarters and charged with soliciting prostitution. Their vehicles were subsequently towed, said Speziale. "We are focusing on all aspects of quality of life in our city and have zero tolerance,” for lawbreakers, said Speziale.

Gang member had 'mini drug store' in her apartment, sheriff says

NEWARK: nvestigators raided the home of a reputed Crips street gang member in Newark's North Ward, where they seized a range of drugs, officials said Friday. The arrest of Edda Vasquez, 37, marked the third alleged drug dealer arrested by Essex County Sheriff's narcotics detectives in the city within two days. Irvington police and sheriff's detectives knocked on the door of Vasquez's North 5th Street home to serve a search warrant Thurs-

Vasquez tossed a plastic bag containing 20 grams of crack cocaine before she was arrested. In the dining room, detectives found 19 grams of crack cocaine, 35 plastic jugs also filled with crack cocaine, drug packaging materials and $2,000, according to officials. Police also discovered a shoebox in a bedroom that contained suboxone and endocet.

PATERSON: t's about three miles from the South Paterson apartment of the Uzbek immigrant charged last week in the New York terror attack, to the run-down tenement over a bodega on Union Avenue that provided a haven for those plotting the 9/11 attacks more than 16 years ago. The two neighborhoods, in the same city, are worlds apart. South Paterson is the heart of a thriving Muslim center, where signs in Arabic welcome shoppers into stores and restaurants. On the other side of the city's Great Falls, Union Avenue is a gritty place where the signs are mostly in Spanish. What both share is an unwelcome connection to yet another horrific news event that once again thrust New Jersey's third-largest city back on the map. And for some, there is a growing fear that the attention from authorities, and the return of the news media, will further cement an image into the minds of some who see Paterson as a hotbed for extremism or radicalization. To Ahmed Youssef, 42, Paterson is just a home--a town to raise his four children, a place to work and somewhere to eat what he claims to be the best falafel sandwiches in the county. "This is crazy. We've never had this happen since I've lived here," he said, sipping his Dunkin Donuts coffee while talking about the swarms of police and federal agents who have taken over local streets since Sayfullo Saipov-who lived blocks away--was charged in the terror attack that killed eight people in New York on Tuesday.

Tops signs of a cheater

18 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • OCT 19-31-NOV 1-18, 2017

I

By Jessica R./Truthfinder t is estimated that 30-60% of all married people in the U.S. cheat on their spouse, and this number is even higher for people who are dating. This means that if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, statistically they're more likely to cheat on you than they are to stay faithful. Below are the top signs of a cheater.

1. Heavy Phone Privacy Cheaters always get very protective over their phones and who can access them. Phone locks, frequent private phone calls from a "relative" they need to step away for, or changed passwords are all signs they are hiding something. 2. Excessive Social Media Cheaters setup secret social media accounts to cheat. They also join social websites built specifically for cheaters or people in relationships. Cheaters will have many social profiles pretending to be single, all managed online.

3. Girls/Guys "only" Night Out Going out with their friends and the significant others aren't invited. If these become too frequent, they could just be using this as an excuse to sneak away.

4. Increased Effort on Their Looks Going to the gym, grooming, and nicer clothes. Who are they trying to impress all of a sudden? Watch out for this trend as they usually aren't looking better for you!

5. Less interested in physical/emotional intimacy Less sex, less intimate conversations, if your partner feels "checked out" along with any of the signs above it is very likely there could be another they are being intimate with. One final factor that is a huge indicator of cheating -- have they cheated before? If they've cheated in the past, they are much more likely to cheat again.

What You Can Do to Investigate If your significant other is displaying one or many of these signs? One of the simple things you can do is get a social media checkup done. The most common traits of a cheater are guarded phones and excessive social media. Follow the sign to avoid going further with some-one that seeks only to satisfy themselves.

CARIBBEAN DAYS OF GIVING:

Carbbean Days of Giving raises over $40K

The Dumplin Shop’s CEO and co-host of 'Caribbean Day of Giving' Kerieth Mair (4th l) poses with other participants including (l-r) Syn Clarke, Robert Clarke, Jennifer Lumey and Jerry McDonald at the mediathon which was held on October 7, 2017 to assist Caribbean countries hit by recent hurricanes. The event which was broadcasted from The Dumplin Shop, Bronx raised over US$40,000 in cash as well as several barrels of goods to be shipped to Barbuda and Dominica.

T

By Anthony Turner Contributing Writer he recently held 'Caribbean Day of Giving' #CaribbeanDayofGiving mediathon on Saturday, October 7th, to assist Caribbean countries hit by recent hurricanes was deemed a successful venture with widespread collaboration from the Caribbean Diaspora media fraternity. The organizers of the Day of Giving reported that the event raised over US$40,000 in cash as well as several barrels of goods, which were handed over to Ebenezer Pilgrim Holiness Church in New York, which will coordinate shipping to Barbuda and Dominica. Most funds raised, came from New York based Caribbean Food Delights’ Vincent HoSang Foundation. The event also had the backing of corporate and organizational sponsors such as Digicel, Tower Isles Frozen Foods Limited, Irie Jam Media Group, Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records, Team Jamaica Bickle, Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations, Golden Krust, IMAGES LLC, Caribbean Business Connections and www.shareitcamp.com. These efforts were in conjunction with fundraising efforts by The American Friends of Jamaica, the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies and the Caribbean Tourism Organization Relief Fund, all 501(c)3 charity partners of Caribbean Day of Giving. Much of the funds raised will benefit The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), which is the official body coordinating relief efforts to the various Caribbean countries affected by the hurricanes. The all day media-thon, which involved over 32+ radio programs and other media platforms, featured interviews with Prime Ministers Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda; Keith Mitchell of Grenada; An-

drew Holness of Jamaica; Hon. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Allan Chastanet of Saint Lucia; the Premier of the British Virgin Islands, Orlando Smith as well as Ronald Jackson, Executive Director of the CDEMA and Her Excellency, Loreen Bannis-Roberts, Permanent Representative of the Commonwealth of Dominica to the United Nations. The Door Restaurant in Queens and the Dumplin’ Shop in the Bronx, were the location sponsors and sites of the radiothon. The day ended with a Caribbean Day of Giving Benefit concert which was live streamed from Usain Bolt’s Tracks and Records Sports Bar in Kingston, Jamaica. Performers included Romain Virgo, Chris Martin, Richie Stephens, Jermaine Edwards, D'Angel and D-Major. Beyond the day, the organizers acknowledge the significant need for ongoing support to aid in the recovery efforts in the Caribbean region. Persons wishing to donate may still do

so at www.caribbeandayofgiving.com or text AFUWI to 41444. As the group design or promote new activities to raise funds, addi-

tional entities are also invited to support this disaster relief and recovery effort.

No to Excessive Drinking

D

Just one more drink rinking too much alcohol can cause physical and emotional damage to you, your friends and your family. One out of every six New Yorkers drinks more than the recommended guidelines described below, and alcohol leads to nearly 1,800 deaths in the city each year. If you are an excessive drinker, there are steps you can take to cut back and lower your health risks. Drinking Guidelines While everyone is different, these recommended guidelines are designed for you to stop drinking before you increase your risk of illness, injury or death. Men ages 64 and younger No more than four drinks in a short period of time, such as a 2-hour period No more than 14 drinks per week Women of all ages and men 65 and older No more than three drinks in a short period of time, such as a 2-hour period No more than seven drinks per week You should not drink at all if you are: Taking medications that interact with alcohol

Younger than 21 Pregnant or trying to get pregnant — there is no level of alcohol consumption known to be safe during pregnancy Defining One Drink 12 ounces of beer 5 ounces of wine, or 3.5 ounces of fortified wine 1.5 ounces of distilled liquor or brandy (many mixed drinks contain more than this amount) Tips to Drink Less If you are an excessive drinker and want to cut back, you can get help from the City, your primary care doctor or another health professional.

Ten ways to improve your diet

Courtesy of The National MS Society 1. Eat three fruits every day. Keep a bowl of fruit on hand to satisfy those sugar cravings. 2. Add beans to your diet. Black bean soup, bean burritos, red beans and rice, and bean dip are examples.

3. Increase your vegetable intake. Double up veggies at your evening meal. Add sliced tomatoes to your lunch. Snack on raw vegetables. 4. Stop eating when you are satisfied. Be aware of portion sizes—most restaurant meals could feed two people. Take leftovers home for another meal. 5. Eat whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole grain cereals.

6. Enjoy two sources of low-fat dairy products every day: milk, yogurt, cheese.

7. Use olive oil or canola oil. Limit saturated fat. Read the labels. And remember that fatty meats or cheeses, butter, and whole milk products have large amounts of saturated fat. 8. Eat three meals every day. People who skip meals tend to make up the calories anyway. 9. Drink more water. Plain water. It's caffeine and calorie free.

10. There's more to nutrition. A good diet can help you fight fatigue as well.

Family Features: reating a business from the ground up is no small endeavor. From planning to financing to putting standard business services in place, there’s a lot to tackle. All of that is in addition to operating the day-to-day business. To overcome these obstacles, franchising is an ideal solution for many aspiring business owners. It provides the advantages of business ownership, but with the added support of a recognized brand and an established method of doing business. Partnering with a franchise like The UPS Store offers numerous benefits. Flexibility. Opening a franchise allows you to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of making your own business decisions and being your own boss, while working toward your goals of personal and financial independence at your own pace. Start-up resources. Getting a new business off the ground requires a wide range of activity, from site selection and lease negotiation to hiring and training staff. A franchise can help you navigate these early decisions and needs with a deep pool of experience and knowledge to help overcome the hurdles you may encounter. Training. Even a well-educated business owner has room to learn. With a franchise, you have the opportunity to receive in-depth training in areas such as business operations, technical systems, human resources, marketing and financial management. Networking opportunities. Connecting with other franchisees at area meetings, regional conferences and national conventions

Product development. Part of developing your business is understanding your customers’ needs and introducing new products and solutions. As a franchise owner, you can contribute insight to the process but focus on running your business while development experts dedicate themselves to researching and innovating new products and services that can help you better serve your customers. Marketing support. Many franchises conduct national advertising campaigns to build brand awareness, while regional efforts and local store marketing can build excitement in your market. A layered marketing plan extends the reach of your marketing budget and lends credibility to your business. Financing assistance. A Milestone Accomplishment A focus on small business is driving big results for one national retailer. The nation’s largest franchise system of retail shipping, print and business service centers, The UPS Store, Inc., is now 5,000 locations strong. “The UPS Store network is made up of dedicated individuals and families who are committed to serving small business owners, customers and their communities,” said Chris Adkins, vice president of franchise develop-

ment for The UPS Store. “We look forward to welcoming more franchisees into our network as we continue to challenge ourselves to find new ways we can bring convenience and value to our customers.” Over the years, the retail concept has expanded to include a range of solutions for small business owners, creating a one-stop shop for small-business support. Small business owners can find resources such as notary services, shredding, mailbox and locker rental, and, in some cases, even inventory management solutions, as well as the packing and shipping services that business and non-business customers alike can utilize.

HIGH MONTHLY CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS combined with even higher interest rates can make it almost impossible to maintain control over your credit card debt. Even with your monthly payments you may not see much of a reduction in debt no matter what you do. What’s more, as your credit card balances increase, it can also cause problems for your budget – you end up juggling bills, choosing between expenses, and putting off important purchases. Luckily, there’s a way you can find the solution that works for your unique financial situation – and even better, it won’t cost a thing to get the information you need.

CREDIT COUNSELING IS THE EASIEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO EXPLORE THE OPTIONS FOR CREDIT CARD DEBT AND IDENTIFY THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDS. Speak with a certified credit counselor at no charge to analyze your debt and budget. They will review your options to see what solutions may work best for you. Your credit counselor may be able to lower high interest rates or even eliminate them while consolidating your credit card debts into one easy payment through a debt management program. Get Out of Debt Faster As a result of those lower interest rates – more of your monthly pay-

ments go toward your debt instead of adding more interest – which means you can get out of debt faster. Every financial situation is different, but most people see their total monthly debt payments reduced by up to 30 to 50 percent as they get out of debt faster. The program is usually completed in around 40-60 payments, so you can be debt-free in just a few years instead of taking decades to eliminate everything you owe.

It’s the fastest and easiest to get professional financial advice without incurring another bill to do it. Build a Positive Credit History Additionally, consolidating debtthrough a certified credit counseling service may help save your credit score from additional damage. You stop future penalties and prevent further damage from missed payments and overdrawn credit lines. Even better, as you work your way through the program,

you’re able to build a positive credit history while reducing your overall debt level. As a result, some people see their credit score even increase over the course of their time with a credit counseling service. FREEDOM FROM DEBT IS POSSIBLE! Don’t spend another sleepless night worrying about your debt problems, or another day stressed about your bills instead of focused on your family and life.
