s Christians around the world are preparing to celebrate Christmas, several members of the African American community are very upbeat and looking forward to enjoying themselves with family and friends. Many also view Christmas as a time for peace, love, and joy.

Here are a few who shared their thoughts with Street Hype reporters: Audrey P. Marks, Ambassador of Jamaica to the United States of America - Christmas is that special time of year which radiates a nostalgic feeling for reuniting with family, friends and loved ones, participating in various festivities and the exchanging of gifts, while not losing sight of the real meaning of Christmas – hope bestowed upon humanity through the birth of Jesus Christ.

Celebrating Christmas with the family

I

n just a few days, we will be celebrating another Christmas, an annual holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is more than a religious or cultural celebration. It is a way of life for billions of people around the world.

However, Christmas is observed by perhaps an equal number of Christians and nonChristians alike.

What started out several hundred years ago as the humble birth of Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem, is today the most celebrated event on earth.

Despite its religious association, more people are attracted to Christmas as it is

more about giving and caring for others, and expressing the pride and joy of family. The social gatherings, symbolic decorations, feasting with food and drinks, are among the beautiful things about Christmas.

We are grateful for being alive, but we all need happiness and comfort as we try to escape the challenges and the hardships we confront daily.

Nevertheless, as our informal Christmas survey reveal, most people in our community are expressing the

view that Christmas today is about supporting and spending time with the family.

A majority of the people we spoke with appear to be very compassionate and sincere about spending time and caring for their families. These are positive signs towards building a healthy African American family which has been deteriorating over the last several decades.

The demographic findings on the quality of life for African Americans are not looking good.

Marriage, for example, has been a declining institution in American. But this decline is even more evident in the Black community. Research has also shown that the number of single-parent homes has risen dramatically for black women.

Therefore, as we celebrate Christmas, let us consider longlasting bonds to build and support the family.

In the words of Lee Iacocca, “No matter what you've done for yourself or humanity, if you can't look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you accomplished?”

My Christmas as a child

hristmas! The most spectacular event celebrated across the world. It is a special time of the year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

My childhood was fun. Raised in the small community of Retirement in the parish of St. Elizabeth Jamaica, and the second of nine siblings, my parents did their best to ensure our memories were unforgettable.

Such memories were filled with the sound of the wind, with chills that only country bunking’s could tolerate. Our cravings ranged from Christmas dinners, cakes and puddings, carol services, treats, gifts, and many other activities during the Yuletide season.

But how could I reminisce and not share the glitter and glamour of Christmas lights that shone from the trees as we decorated our home. The setting was picture perfect.

Our Christmas meals were delicious.

Breakfast would include boiled bananas, slices of hard dough bread with roast beef, ackee and salt fish with fried dumplings served with hot chocolate tea - the one with the oil pon the top…yummy!

I cherished those memories because our house was filled with joy.

Flash Forward to Christmas in New York City.

I still get chills when I remember those days. Living in New York has not changed the way I feel about my siblings at Christmas. The major change however, is the relationship, which I have developed with God. I now understand and celebrate the true reason for the season – Jesus Christ.

Today, my accomplishments include celebrating with my husband and children, fine dining, selecting gifts with love for my loved ones, and most importantly, tokens for the less fortunate.

I truly love Christmas, the season of good cheer. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Rockaway Beach) joined Channel View School for Research this past week for their annual College March. The College March is a powerful annual event during which the entire senior class marches their college applications to an on-campus mailing box while the rest of the school and local community cheers them on. The College March originated in 2011 and is an annual NYC Outward Bound Schools’ event. Since its inception, the College March has grown beyond a New York City March to schools across the nation. Last year, 2,700 seniors marched at 35 schools from 12 cities across the country. The event now serves as a powerful ritual that helps foster a college-going culture in the schools that implement it.

Clarke Opposes Republican Tax Bill

WASHINGTON: ongresswoman Yvette D. Clarke issued this statement following today’s GOP tax vote. Clarke voted against the bill: “Policy reflects priorities and the GOP's priorities are clear: billionaires first, everybody else second.

“Eighty-six percent of middle class families will pay more in taxes. Americans will face higher healthcare premiums and 13 million people will lose their coverage altogether.”

“Twenty-five billion dollars will be cut from Medicare. The bill slashes the highly popular state and local tax (SALT) deduc-

tions and increases the debt by as much as $2.2 trillion, leaving our children and grandchildren to deal with crushing debt.

City Council Passes Police Oversight 'right To Know Act'

elissa Mark-Viverito made sure her final stated meeting as city council speaker was a full agenda — and it was filled with goodbyes and controversies.

At issue were two bills dealing with how police and the public interact.

One requires that the NYPD direct officers to search only after obtaining "voluntary, knowing, and intelligent consent."

The second requires police give out business cards, including name, rank, and shield number, while noting 311 can be called to submit comments about the encounter.

Mayor Bill de Blasio supports the bills, while the largest police union has called them dangerous overreach.

But because handing out cards is not required on all police interactions, others have said the bills do not go far enough.

"So if you're not including traffic stops, that means an officer can stop you, a lot of things can happen, they still don't have to give you a card," Brooklyn City Councilman Jumaane Williams said. The bill's sponsor grew emotional talking about the blowback.

Senator Ruben Diaz becomes Councilmember

his Thursday, December 21st Senator Rubén Díaz will be taking his oath of office as the New York City Councilman for the 18th Council District in New York City.

This special ceremony will take place during the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization’s Annual Christmas Breakfast, which will take place at Maestros Caterers located at 1703 Bronxdale Avenue in Bronx County starting at 9:00 am.

The Senator Diaz’s swearing in ceremony will be officiated by the New York City Clerk Michael McSweeney who will travel to the Bronx for the occasion.

After serving 16 years representing the residents of the 32nd Senatorial District, Senator Ruben Diaz has decided to give up his Senate seat for the position of NYC Councilman, which he won in the past general election conducted on Tuesday, November 7, of this year.

During the Clergy breakfast, the ministers will also conduct the swearing-in ceremony of their newly elected Board of Directors for the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization.

Senator Diaz will officially begin serving as a City Councilman on January 1st, 2018 at 12:01 am.

opular Bronx chef and event promoter, Kevin Michael “Big Red/Mr. K” Johnson, was laid to rest on Dec. 16 at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Hawthorne following a thanksgiving service held at Bronx Bethany Church of Nazarene, Bronx.

Johnson, 49, known for preparing the best seafood dishes in the Bronx and Mount Vernon, died after a suffering a heart attack on Dec. 5.

“It came as a surprise to us as Kevin did not have any major ailments or medical conditions,” according to commonlaw-wife and business partner, Judith Jackson.

Johnson is survived by three children, his father, six siblings, one grandchild, nieces, nephews, aunties, uncles and hundreds of other relatives and friend.

Jackson expressed appreciation to several members of the community, including restaurant and bar owners, for their support and participation in the “farewell and funeral” for Johnson. “It was a tough time for us as we say goodbye to a man that we love dearly,” Jackson noted.

Harrison Trainer Arraigned on Sexual Abuse Charge

ric Betz, 31 of Irvington, NY has been arraigned on sexual abuse and forcible touching charges.

Betz is charged with Forcible Touching and Sexual Abuse.

Betz and the victim initially met at LifeEric Betz time Fitness in Harrison where Betz is a trainer. On or about July 1, 2017, Betz contacted the victim and arranged to meet her. He then forcibly groped and sexually assaulted the victim in spite of her protests. After a brief struggle with the victim, Betz left the premises.

Betz pled not guilty. His bail was set at $3,000 cash over $3,000 bond, and his next court date is Jan. 25, 2018.

Betz faces up to one year in jail.

New national identity system in Jamaica to cut transaction costs, facilitate services

KINGSTON, Jamaica: amaica will have a reliable identification system that will make it easier and cheaper for citizens and legal residents to prove their identity for a variety of transactions, from opening bank accounts to getting social services from government agencies.

By reducing transactional costs on identity verification, the National Identification System (NIDS) will help cut bureaucracy and improve the delivery of government services. Among other benefits, it will make it easier to access birth certificates, especially for mothers and persons with special needs.

The project – which will strengthen the civil registry, enhance the ability for the public and private sector to introduce identity verification and the implementation of the National Identification System – is being financed with a US$68 million loan approved by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and will bring Jamaica to the forefront of modern identity management, in line with Estonia, South Korea, Finland and Uruguay, among others.

As has occurred in other countries, the National Identification System will be instrumental in improving the quality and efficiency of public services, as well as spurring the development of e-government.

The provision of online services by the private sector, such as e-banking and e-commerce, will also benefit from the implementation of this system.

To obtain a passport, Jamaicans must present four documents, a time and resource burden on both citizens and government agencies. Jamaicans must present three proofs of identity and two references to open a bank account, raising the cost of the transaction due to lost time and other costs to US$93 (Jamaican dollars: 11,653).

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: ccording to local reports, a 40-year-old wealthy Pakistani national has been issued a Grenada diplomatic passport by the current administration of Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell.

The individual has been identified as Fahad Sultan Ahmed, born on May 14, 1977, in Karachi, who reportedly obtained a Grenada diplomatic passport two years ago. However, he is not named in any official diplomatic capacity at the Grenada High Commission in London, nor does he hold any other portfolio or assignment anywhere for Grenada.

This latest revelation follows allegations earlier this year that Henley and Partners, an advisory firm that plays a major role in promoting the citizenship by investment (CBI) programme run by Grenada, was involved in an alleged scheme to obtain a diplomatic passport from the government of Grenada for a Ukrainian businessman, in exchange for a payment of US$1 million.

CARIBBEAN NEWS Over 80 Caribbean Nationals Among Interpol’s Most Wanted

NEW YORK, NY: whopping 84 Caribbean nationals are on the current Interpol’s Most Wanted List for a range of serious crimes ranging from murder to drug trafficking to sexual assault and rape News Americas has found.

Leading the tally is Jamaica, which ranks sixth globally with the highest rate of violent deaths in the world. According to News Americas analysis, the number of wanted criminals from Jamaica on the Interpol list is a whopping 52. The list includes 29 who are wanted for murder.

Second on the list of Caribbean nations is the Dominican Republic, which has 16 nationals on the list. They include two women – Elizabeth Cleydy Peralta Marte and Joan Jose Espinal Carvajal, both 27, who are both wanted for counterfeiting Guyana has six wanted persons on the list including Julie Elizabeth Ravel, a German citizen reportedly living there, who is wanted for alleged murder while Suriname has five including Brazilian-born, Surinamese national, Patrícia Terezinha Miguel Bom, 43, who is wanted for narco trafficking.

Two nationals are wanted from The Bahamas. They are Alexander Antonio Thompson, 39, who is wanted for aggravated assault

with a firearm, resisting an officer with violence and possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis and Nicole Russell, 28, who is wanted for aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a knife during commission of a felony.

Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago each have one person on the Interpol list.

From St. Kitts is Russian-born, St. Kitts national, Alexander Rodionov, who is wanted for bribery while 27-year-old Tyson Joseph of Saint Lucia who is wanted for robbery while armed with a firearm, attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Ralph Anthony Sheppard, 49, is the lone person making the list from T&T. The TriniCanadian is wanted for sexual assault on a minor and incest.

Cuba postpones presidential election; Raul Castro to stay in power until April

HAVANA, Cuba — he Cuban government has announced that it will postpone a presidential election originally planned for February 2018, which means that Raúl Castro will remain in power at least until April 19, the new date in which a new legislature and the president of the Councils of State and Ministers will be elected.

Castro had announced that he would retire at the end of his two terms on February 24, the original date of the election of the new National Assembly, although any transfer of power is likely to be largely symbolic since he will remain as head of the ruling Communist Party.

China puts forward Grenada’s Development Plan

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: f the Grenadian government accepts a multibillion dollar plan, it would become the first in the world to opt for the wholesale adoption of a Chinese development blueprint – increasing Beijing’s influence in what is frequently described as ‘America’s backyard’.

The Chinese foreign ministry said this month that “China Development Bank, at the request of the Grenadian government, is helping them draft a national development strategy”, the South China Morning Post reported.

It said the Grenadian government “assumed the primary responsibility for the development of their own country” and that China was “willing to provide necessary assistance to their economic and social development upon request”.

Wang Yingjie, a lead researcher involved in the drafting of the Grenada national development strategic plan, told the Post this month the plan had been finished recently and “should be in the hands of the Grenadian government already”.

According to the Post, Beijing’s blueprint envisions the construction of massive infrastructure projects in the small Caribbean island, which has a population of about 100,000. They include the construction of a highway connecting the major towns on its main island and a railway line encircling it.

The plan also calls for the building of deepwater ports that could accommodate a large number of cruise and cargo ships, a large wind farm to replace diesel-fuelled generators and a modernised airport.

Eleven Caribbean countries defy US on UN resolution on Jerusalem

NEW YORK, NY: n a roster that could be described as the courageous, the circumspect and the craven, eleven Caribbean countries supported a UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, despite US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley’s threatening letter to General Assembly members not to support the resolution and that Trump “will be watching [Thursday’s] vote carefully” and “requested I report back on those who voted against us…”

On Thursday, the UNGA overwhelmingly rejected the Trump administration’s decision to recognize the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. By a 128-9 vote, the representatives of the member countries gathered at UN headquarters in New York City ignored US objections and approved a nonbinding resolution calling on countries to avoid moving their embassies to Jerusalem.

Among the countries that voted in favour of the resolution are many traditional US allies, including the United Kingdom and France.

Thirty-five countries abstained, including nine regional countries, with two others – Saint Lucia and St Kitts and Nevis being strategically absent.

Two regional countries joined Israel and the US, along with five other countries, in voting against the measure.

Earlier in the day, before the assembly voted on the largely symbolic declaration, Haley reiterated her resistance in no uncertain terms.

“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation,” Haley said on Thursday.

Latin American and Caribbean exports to China increased by 30%

WASHINGTON: Exports from Latin America and the Caribbean increased by around 13 percent in 2017 and are nearing the $985 billion mark. This sharp acceleration contrasts with the 3.3-percent drop of 2016, according to “Trade Trend Estimates for Latin America and the Caribbean,” a new report published by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The main explanation for this growth is the recovery in exports to China, which are up by 30 percent, and to the United States, which grew by ten percent. These two destination markets accounted for two-thirds of total growth. The 12-percent increase in intraregional flows also contributed significantly to the region’s trade performance.

Exports from the region grew more than total global exports, which saw a year-on-year variation of 9.7 percent between January and September this year.

Foreign Entrepreneurs Can Come to the US to Grow Their Businesses

by Leslie Dellon oreign entrepreneurs who want to build innovative companies in the United States received good news on Friday, when federal judge James E. Boasberg of the U.S. District Court ruled in favor of a lawsuit brought by the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), entrepreneurs, and startup companies on September 19, 2017.

Represented by the American Immigration Council and Mayer Brown LLP, the plaintiffs’ lawsuit challenged the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) delay of the

International Entrepreneur Rule (IER).

The rule was created to allow talented foreign-born entrepreneurs to travel to or stay in the United States to grow their companies for two and a half years, with the possible extension of another two and a half years.

As a result of the agency’s delay, foreign entrepreneurs that intended to use the rule to grow businesses in the United States were blocked from doing so.

NVCA and the other plaintiffs argued that because DHS did not solicit advance comment from the public on the delay, it vi-

olated the Administrative Procedure Act’s requirements. The United States would consequently miss out on the economic activity that would have been generated by these new businesses.

With Judge Boasberg’s ruling in place, DHS must now cease the delay and begin accepting applications of foreign entrepreneurs who wish to grow their companies in the United States. This will no doubt provide a significant boost to the U.S. economy, as it has long thrived on the contributions and innovations of foreign entrepreneurs.

Immigration Arrests Inside the U.S. Spiked While Border Crossings Dropped to Record Lows

by Joshua Breisblatt he Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly released immigration enforcement data for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, which shows that apprehensions at the border are at their lowest levels in over 45 years, while arrests in the interior of the country have increased.

The data for FY 2017 covers the final four months of the Obama administration and the first eight months of the Trump administration (As it relates to border security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which is housed within DHS, announced that CBP had apprehended 310,531 individuals trying to enter the country without authorization this past FY, which was a significant 23.7 percent decrease from FY 2016. Apprehensions conducted at the border are used as proxy for determining whether migration flows are up or down.

Thus while the number of apprehensions along the border are declining, this is not likely due to the administration’s anti-immigrant rhetoric and calls for a border wall. Rather, the decline is simply a continuation of historically low levels not seen since the early 1970s.

Asafa Powell Leads Strong Jamaican Contingent at NYRR Millrose Games

The Daily Telegraph said Wagner - an agent linked to Gatlin - offered to "illicitly supply performance-enhancing drugs" to undercover reporters.

A video released by the Telegraph features a man the newspaper says is Wagner insinuating Gatlin is taking banned drugs, "just like every other sprinter in America".

The paper also said Gatlin's coach, former Olympic gold medallist Mitchell, told reporters that athletes are able to get away with doping because the drugs they use cannot be detected by tests. Both deny the allegations.

Writing on Instagram on Tuesday, Gatlin said he "fired" Mitchell "as soon as I found out about this".

The 35-year-old American said he is "not using and have not used" performance-enhancing drugs. He added: "All legal options are on the table as I will not allow others to lie about me like this."

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) set up by the sport's world governing body the IAAF - and the US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) said they had opened an investigation into the claims.

"Investigations stemming from tips and whistleblowers play a critical role in anti-doping efforts," Usada said in a statement.

One of the all-time greatest sprinters in history, Powell will be joined by compatriots Natoya Goule, Simoya Campbell, Kimarra McDonald, Aisha Praught Leer, Kemoy Campbell and the previously-announced Omar McLeod, in addition to other athletes expected to be added to the lineup.

“It’s been a good few years since I’ve run at the NYRR Millrose Games,” Powell said. “This year will be my first with it being held at the Armory. I hear the Jamaican crowd there is amazing. I’m really looking forward to putting my mark down in a building with such history.”

Asafa Powell has represented Jamaica at the last four Olympic Games, taking 4x100m gold in 2016. He has earned outdoor World Championships medals in the individual 100m and 4x100m relay, including two relay gold medals.

He is the fourth-fastest male 100m athlete of all time, having run 9.72. He has run

under 10 seconds 97 times; and under 9.90 a total of 43 times, more than any other athlete. His legendary fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt is second, with 35 sub-9.90 races.

At the NYRR Millrose Games, Powell will feature in a star-studded 60m, the distance over which he clocked a personal best of 6.44 at the Portland World Indoor Championships.

In New York, he will face Omar McLeod, the reigning gold medalist in the Olympic and World Championships 110m hurdles as well as the World Indoor Championships 60m hurdles. The former University of Arkansas standout McLeod has run 9.99 for 100m outdoors and 6.61 for the indoor 60m.

The two Jamaicans will also be challenged in the NYRR Millrose Games’ 60m by the previously-announced CJ Ujah of Great Britain, whose 4x100m team struck gold at the London 2017 World Championships.

For the first time at the NYRR Millrose Games, several Jamaican high schools will be sending their top runners to compete in multiple relays against some of America’s fastest high school relay teams.

IRAWMA/Chicago Music Awards set for Feb 2018

ext year's 36th staging of the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMAs) will be piggybacking on the 37th Annual Chicago Music Awards.

The decision was taken as the IRAWMA hopes to nationally televise their ceremony.

To allow for adequate planning, the awards' rebranding committee has pushed the reintroduction of the IRAWMA ceremony until 2019.

As a result, the 36th IRAWMA winners will be revealed in conjunction with the 37th Chicago Music Awards (CMA) in February

2018, instead of the previously announced date of September 30.

The rebranding committee is currently seeking the most appropriate venue to host the IRAWMA 2019.

Jamaica, New York and South Florida are being considered.

Missy Elliot to receive Essence's Black Women In Music honour

issy Elliot is set to "work it" early next year when she receives Essence's Black Women In Music honour. The iconic rapper/producer will receive the honour that Essence first began awarding back in 2010 to recognise the accomplishments of both emerging and established artists and influencers during Grammy week.

‘Compassionate Visionary’

By Kimmy Blair Street Hype Reporter ————————————————housands of mourners poured into the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn on Tuesday for the solemn and tearful funeral of the man who was remembered as God-fearing and compassionate.

The former CEO of the Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill, Lowell Hawthorne died on December 3, of a selfinflicted gunshot wound to the head at his company’s headquarters, Bronx.

At the funeral service to honor the life and legacy of the man who founded Golden Krust, the services began with prayer and song as the room filled with loved ones, friends and people whose lives Hawthorne had impacted over the years.

He came to the U.S in 1981 from Jamaica, and first worked as an accountant for the NYPD before opening his first bakery on E. Gun Hill Road in the Bronx.

The franchise grew to more than 120 stores in 10 different states.

He's received numerous awards over the years and was featured on the TV show “Undercover Boss.”

He even created a foundation which has awarded more than 300 scholarships to aspiring students in the U.S and Jamaica.

Hawthorne was 57 years old.

The widow of Golden Krust founder Lowell Hawthorne said that his shocking suicide left her family heartbroken and grasping for answers, as she shared her personal sentiments in a tribute on the back of a 45-page printed program. Lorna called her husband a "Phenomenal Extraordinaire."

"My husband was a visionary, a dreamer, a motivator, a courageous and compassionate person," she said in the message to the more than 4,500 mourners who packed the Christian Cultural Center to capacity.

"You were my confidant, a faithful and loving husband, the greatest Dad our children could ever wish for and a tower of strength to our family," she said. "Though you left us with many tears and questionswe must continue our life and will see you in paradise," she wrote.

One of his four children seemed to allude to the growing work stress in his eulogy delivered Tuesday. "You are now in eternal peace. Fret no more," son Haywood Hawthorne, a vice president at Golden Krust, told the crowd.

Omar Hawthorne delivered a touching tribute to his late father, stating: “Thank you for teaching me never to take anything for granted and pushing me to become the best possible man I could be.”

Hawthorne's daughter choked back tears as she described losing her "best friend.” "For anyone who knows me, you know my dad was my first love," Monique Hawthorne said from the stage. "As a father-daughter duo, we fit together quite well. He was the yin to my yang."

"I'm sure he was probably joking, but in those circumstances and those unseen moments, my father was always protective, always loving and always supportive," she

said. Hawthorne's two other sons also gave eulogies, with one voicing the family's shock over the unexpected tragedy.

Hundreds of mourners braved the cold and packed inside the megachurch to pay their last respects to the beloved Jamaicanborn entrepreneur who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in early December.

Andrew Holness, both of whom were not present at the ceremony but had their speeches delivered by representatives.

“Lowell has brought hope and possibilities to many young Jamaicans through the Golden Krust scholarship,” Patterson said in reference to the scholarship named after Hawthorne’s parents – the Mavis and Ephraim scholarship - which allowed about 350 students to go to college.

“He was a man of integrity, he found time to help others despite his many commitments,” Patterson said.

Teacher raises money to buy entire

Man convicted in girlfriend's school Christmas gifts in New Jersey death gets 70 years

ELIZABETH, NJ: New Jersey man convicted of killing his girlfriend whose remains were scattered in at least two locations has been sentenced to 70 years in prison.

Matthew Ballister III was also ordered Monday to spend at least 55 years in prison before being eligible for parole in the October 2013 death of April Wyckoff.

The Union Township man was convicted earlier of murder, hindering apprehension, desecrating human remains and other counts.

Union County prosecutors say Ballister stabbed, hit and intentionally ran over the victim because he thought she was having an affair. He said he accidentally ran her over during a drug-induced hallucination.

Some of Wyckoff's remains were recovered in Newark, but the rest of her body was never found. Judge Stuart Peim called the case "particularly vile and barbaric."

PATERSON, New Jersey: A New Jersey teacher has bought Christmas gifts for the entire school using donations from her online fundraiser, and she says next year will be "bigger and better."

Jennifer Olawski says she was inspired to buy gifts for the students at Community Charter School of Paterson last year after one student told her she wasn't expecting anything for Christmas.

The Spruce Street branch serves students in grades kindergarten through four, and school officials say many come from families living below the federal poverty level.

The 31-year-old says she raised about $2,500 last year. This year, she raised more than $4,500 to give each of the 500 students coloring books, slime kits and winter hats and gloves Monday.

Olawski says she is already collecting donations for next year online through GoFundMe.

But, at this time of year, we're all reminded of the true test of a relationship: giving each other presents.

• The etiquette of gift giving in relationships isn't always obvious. Particularly when it's early in a relationship, or Christmas shows up before you've actually identified whatever it is that is going on between you as a relationship. Emily Post never included a rule for how many times you have to sleep with someone before they warrant a Christmas present.

• A gift to someone you've just started seeing — And, should you decide to take the risk and give a gift to someone you've just started seeing, what you get them can be even more revealing. Something too personal might have too much meaning; something impersonal might not have enough. Something too generic is, well, too generic. Something too practical lacks romance; something too romantic is too risky. Spending too little seems cheap; spending too much is extravagant. Before you know it, an innocent little gift has taken on the ability to define a relationship faster than you can say, "I hope you kept the receipt."

• When you're seeing someone, giving without receiving sucks - A friend of mine learned this lesson last Christmas. The guy she was seeing was about to leave the country for at least a year, but despite their attempts to avoid getting too involved before he left, they did, and she felt strongly enough about him to want to give him a Christmas gift. "I put a lot of effort and thought into a gift for him -- a homemade CD and a safety charm for travelers, wrapped up very lovingly. When I gave it to him, he said he felt bad because he hadn't got me anything. Yes, despite all that "to give is better than to receive" crap, when you're seeing someone, giving without receiving sucks. It screams "Obviously, I care more about you than you do about me."

• A bad gift can be very telling Once, a guy gave me a pair of sparkly, plaid Converse running shoes for Christmas after we had been going out (and I use the term loosely) for less than a month. Trust me, I'm not a sparkly plaid kinda gal. In fact, I'm not even a running shoe kinda gal. Right then, I knew it wasn't to be. I thanked him politely and shoved them into the Sally Ann bag in the back of my closet. We broke up a few weeks later.

• Gift giving can speak volumes about the relationship - But the politics of gift giving isn't lost only on the newly united. Even if you've been together for years, gift giving can speak volumes about the relationship. One year I agonized over what to get my boyfriend. I combed stores in two cities, searching high and low for that perfect gift. I finally found it: a vintage hockey sweater, the last one in the store -maybe even the last one on the planet. This, I thought, would tell him how much I cared, how well I understood and accepted who he was -- a big issue in our relationship was that he was into sports and I wasn't -- and how much I loved him. I couldn't wait to give it to him. We didn't end up exchanging
