Lawyer Found Guilty of Immigration Fraud By Kimmy Blair Contributing Writer Street Hype Newspaper Queens lawyer has been found guilty of large-scale asylum fraud after she was caught running a scheme to help immigrants who would typically be denied entry to the US, win asylum in the country. Andreea Dumitru Parcalaboiu, 43 was running a fraudulent immigration system that would allow dangerous criminals to be granted asylum in the United States by fabricating travel history and personal narratives. Dumitru, who was also previously investigated over a $5 million corporate tax evasion scheme, was charged with a range of crimes in association with her job as an immigration attorney. The attorney was found guilty in Manhattan federal court of asylum fraud, making false statements to immigration authorities, and aggravated identity theft on Nov. 19, 2018, following a two-week trial before United States District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.

According to the Superseding Indictment, other filings in Manhattan federal court, and the evidence presented at trial: Between March 27, 2013, and 2017, Dumitru operated a scheme to submit fraudulent I-589 forms in connection with applications for asylum. Specifically, Dumitru presented over 100 claims in which she knowingly made false statements and representations about, among other things, the applicants’ narratives of alleged persecution, criminal histories, and travel histories. Dumitru deliberately fabricated detailed personal stories of purported mistreatment of her clients, forged her clients’ signatures and falsely notarized affidavits. The crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, one count of making false statements, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail, and one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory consecutive sentence of two years in prison. No sentencing date has been announced.
