The Celebration of ‘Love’ on Valentine’s Day

alentine’s Day in the Western world is known as the day when lovers express their affection through gifts and messages.

Even though it is not a public holiday, it is celebrated with such hype that causes many who are single to feel left out of the lovefest.

I often see people go out of their way to buy something expensive for their significant other because the fear of not doing so might end the relationship or create a wedge between the two. Some do not necessarily buy a gift, but put on a whole production to seduce their lover into falling for them all over again. Then there are others who take the opportunity to seek out a lover even for the day just to feel a sense of being loved.

Others use the day to rekindle a love that is dying. I am sure there are many other ways in which Valentine’s Day unite or divide lovers.

However, it makes me question the type of “Love” we are actually celebrating on Valentine’s Day. This led me to dig a bit deeper into the foundation on which this holiday was built. And its origins are dark!

According to National Public Radio (NPR), “from February 13th to the 15th, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia.

The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain. The Roman romantics were drunk. They were naked,’ says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually lineup for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile.”

It was a brutal fete, included a matchmaking lottery in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be coupled up for the duration of the festival or longer if the match was right.

Also, on a separate note, Emperor Claudius II executed two men both named Valentine on February 14th of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.” In other words, Valentine’s Day was built on a foundation of murder and a ritual that has nothing to do with actual love. I know we are living in a different time and we have given Valentine’s Day a new norm.

Fast forward to today, some women push, encourage or influence their men to buy them gifts so they can feel loved or to show the world that someone loves them. Both rituals may not look the same, but there are similarities.

Conversely, what if real love is loving someone else unconditionally and expecting nothing in return. Celebrating love is a beautiful thing and we should celebrate it, but in way where it creates more love than conflict.

It should not be a day when people expect someone to buy them gifts or to prove to them that their lover loves them -- especially by showering them with gifts that are temporary. It should be a day when we try to outdo the next person by demonstrating how loving we can be to everyone, not just to our significant others. In essence, this display of love should be an everyday expression to everyone who cross our paths. We should decide to show others love through our kindness, gentleness, and compassion because real love is a decision, not a feeling. It is loving someone without the expectation of a reward from the person we are loving.

Nevertheless, go ahead: buy your gifts!

But consider the real reasons you are doing it. Is it a real expression of your love?

TOP RANKIN’ Jamaican is first Black woman to command Marine Corp

By Kimmy Blair Street Hype Writer omen make up a mere 8 percent of the United States Marine Corps, but a Jamaican-born woman has risen to the top of the Corp.

Lorna Mahlock, who hails from Kingston, made history in 2018 when she became the first Black woman promoted in to brigadier general in the 243-year-old Marine Corps, the smallest of the four military services. She is also the Corp’s director of command, control, communications and computers (C4), and CIO. According to the Marine Corps Community Services, the branch has the fewest female service members. The Corps made history in 2017 by welcoming its first female infantry officer. The unidentified woman was the first to finish training for a military occupational specialty (MOS), which was opened up to women in April 2016. In 2015, the Pentagon historically made all combat jobs available to women.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Mahlock immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, and was commissioned into the Marines in 1991. She was selected for the Marine Corps Enlisted Commissioning Education Program, graduated from Marquette University.

Prior to her current assignment, she served as Deputy Director, Headquarters Marine Corps Plans, Policy and Operations and Commanding Officer, Marine Air Control Group 18, Okinawa, Japan.

Designated as an Air Traffic Control Officer, she earned certifications as a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Tower Local Controller and a Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Instructor. She has commanded and led at various levels globally and in combat, including but not limited to: Air Traffic Control Detachment Commander; Executive Officer – 1st Stinger Battery; Director - Marine Corps Instructional Management School; Air Control Officer - G3 Future Operations 1st Marine Aircraft Wing; Company Commander - Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and IRAQI FREEDOM 01; Operations and Executive Officer - IRAQI FREEDOM 02; Director - Marine Air Command and Control System Experimental; Commanding Officer - IRAQI She holds a Masters Degree in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma at Norman; a Masters in National Security and Strategic Studies with distinction from the Naval Post Graduate School, Newport, Rhode Island; a Masters in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College and a Masters Certificate in Information Operations from the Naval Post Graduate School. Jamaican couple plead guilty to lottery scamming charges in US court A PENNSYLVANIA: Jamaican couple living in Pennsylvania in the United States admitted on Tuesday to ripping off elderly persons in a lottery scam.

U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed a term of time served on 22 year old Ashani Levy after he pleaded guilty to money structuring in connection with the scam.

He was in the U.S. on a tourist visa and has served about three months in jail.

Levy will be turned over to immigration authorities for deportation. His wife,

According to the Pittsburg Post Gazette newspaper, the couple was involved in a lottery phone scam designed to trick senior citizens into sending them money.

Several of the victims sent money to the couple's address.

U.S. Postal Inspectors found that 15 packages had been sent to the location since June last year.

After months of criticism from elected officials in New York unhappy about the incentives offered to Amazon to establish a new campus in Queens, the online retail giant announced Thursday it is scrapping its plans.

In recent days, officials across the country—from nearby locations like Newark and Connecticut to Chicago—have publicly suggested the company should instead pivot to their areas. But Amazon attempted to tamp down those efforts Thursday, saying in its statement that the company does not "intend to re-open the HQ2 search at this time."

off her campaign, promising to restore dignity and honesty to the mayor's office.

Mayor Richard Thomas on Monday formally announced his bid for reelection. Thomas, the youngest mayor in the city's history, says he will continue to fight to serve the people of Mount Vernon.

What is Social Security Disability Insurance?

S

ocial Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federally run benefits program that provides aid to people who are unable to achieve gainful employment due to a permanent disabling condition.

SSDI is financed by the Social Security tax. Therefore, any person that qualifies as disabled according to the definition provided

by Social Security Administration (SSA), and who has paid Social Security taxes long enough to achieve sufficient work credits, can qualify for SSDI. Do You Qualify for SSDI? In order to qualify for SSDI, you must suffer from a permanent condition that prevents you from working. In other words, your disability must have lasted, or be expected to last, a minimum of twelve months and you must be unable to earn an income greater than $1,220 per month (prior to 2019, this standard allowable level of Substantial Gainful Activity was only $1,180 per month).

In addition, an individual must have earned sufficient work credits in order to qualify for SSDI. The normal requirement is a total of 40 credits, 20 of which must have been earned in the 10 years prior to the onset of disability. Usually, this means that a person must have a fairly consistent work history and have worked (and paid Social Security taxes) for a combined five of the ten years prior to becoming disabled.

These work requirements can be somewhat less for younger individuals, as parents’ work credits can be applied to applicants under the age of 22.

Due to the limited resources of the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the extreme volume of applications processed, more than 60% of initial stage applications are currently denied. Sting and Shaggy win 2019 Grammy award for 'Best Reggae Album' O

n February 10, Sting and Shaggy reigned supreme at the 2019 Grammy Awards, which took place at the Staples Center in Los Angels, California.

Sting and Shaggy took home the Grammy award for "Best Reggae Album" for their collaborative album 44/876. They bested competition from such albums as As the World Turns by Black Uhuru, Reggae Forever by Etana, Rebellion Rises by Ziggy Marley and A Matter of Time by Protoje.

In his Grammy acceptance speech, Shaggy expressed his gratitude and thanked his family, especially his wife and daughter, as well as his Jamaican crew. "Thank you to all of the nominees in the reggae category," he said, and he gave a shout-out to each of their names.

This marked Shaggy's second career Grammy award, as well as his second Grammy win in the "Best Reggae Album" category. He previously won in 1996 for Boombastic. For Sting, on the other hand, this marked his 17th career Grammy trophy.

Evans is the television writer, producer, director and actor who is co-creator of The Jamie Foxx Show and was the leading Executive Producer behind a number of American sitcoms including Martin (1992–1997) on FOX, The Jamie Foxx Show (1996–2001) on The WB, and Love That Girl! (2010–2014) on TV One. Keith L. Smith is known for his work on Three Kings (1999), A Few Good Men (1992) andJFK (1991), and has worked on multiple films with award winning Hollywood Director Oliver Stone.

CARIBBEAN NEWS Jamaican farmers to benefit from marijuana industry KINGSTON, Jamaica: rime Minister Andrew Holness says that the Alternative Development Programme (ADP), which will provide an avenue for small farmers to benefit from the marijuana industry, will start by March. The programme is intended to prevent and eliminate the illicit cultivation of marijuana and channel the process through legal system.

The pilot, which will begin in Accompong, St. Elizabeth, south west of here and Orange Hill in We s t m o r e land, west of the capital, will involve the farming of marijuana to provide raw material for processors. “It is a real fear that as that (marijuana) industry emerges to become more corporatised, that the original ganja man, the original farmer, could very well be left out of the gains and the benefits, when you were the ones singing the praises and the benefits from how long,” Holness said.

“So this programme is of significant importance to ensure that small farmers, and, in fact, communities like Accompong, where there is certain discipline, a certain order, a certain social system that will ensure that it is not used in illicit ways, will benefit,” he added.

Speaking at a ceremony in commemoration of the 281 anniversary of the peace treaty signed by the Accompong Maroons with the British and to commemorate the birthday of legendary leader Cudjoe, Holness said he has received the commitment of the Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Audley Shaw, that the programme will begin within the first quarter of this year.

“I know that you have actually started your part of the programme, but you are now awaiting the Government’s part of the programme to commence. I had a word with him (Shaw) and he gave me a commitment that the Alternative Development Programme for the small ganja farmers to produce for the legal trade will start,” he said.

The 1998 Action Plan, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, provides for the inclusion of a programme, such as the ADP, through specifically designed rural development measures consistent with sustained national economic growth.

Jamaicans Among the Most Wanted Nationals On Interpol

By NAN Staff Writer News Americas, FORT LAUDERDALE: whopping 55 Caribbean nationals from just one country are on the Interpol’s most wanted list, News Americas Now has found.

The 55 are from Jamaica and comprise the any country in the region, including the Dominican Republic. The majority – 40 – are wanted by Jamaican authorities for murder or unlawful wounding.

Others like Tuvares Narado Thompson, 30, is wanted by Costa Rican authorities and Albert Bolt, 64, is wanted by US authorities – also for murder.

The others on the list are wanted for rape, assault with intent to cause grievous harm or gun crimes.

However, Benjamin Thomas, 67, of Jamaica, is wanted for narco-trafficking – conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute crack cocaine, while Ian

Haiti president breaks silence after week of violent unrest PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti: aitian President Jovenel Moise broke his silence after a week of violent protests demanding his resignation as the US announced it was pulling "non-emergency personnel" from the country over the deadly unrest.

US Pledge $100 M to aid in the Venezuela crisis CARACAS, Venezuela: wenty-five countries have pledged US$100 million in aid to Venezuela, a top US official said Thursday, as the crisis-hit country's Supreme Court took aim at oil executives appointed by the opposition. Venezuela is plagued by hyperinflation and major shortages of basic goods, and two men— opposition leader Juan Guaido and President Nicolas Maduro are vying for control of the country.

The United States is among more than 50 countries that have recognized Guaido as interim president, but Maduro backed by the country's military as well as Russia, China and dozens of other states has so far refused to relinquish his office.

US national security advisor John Bolton made the announcement on the aid pledged to Venezuela following an Organization of American States conference on assisting the country.

According to David Smolanksy, coordinator of an OAS working group on migration and refugees from Venezuela, the money will go directly to aid collection centers set up on the borders with Colombia and Brazil and on the Caribbean island of Curacao.

Councilman pay’s being garnished for defaulting on $140,000 loan PATERSON, NJ ouncilman Michael Jackson’s paycheck is being garnished for defaulting on a $140,000 business loan.

Jackson’s lender, the Paterson Restoration Corporation (PRC), obtained a court order in late December to collect on the defaulted loan.

10-percent of his gross weekly wage has to be withheld to pay back the loan.

Jackson earns $41,213 as a councilman, according to payroll records.

Jackson declined to comment on Friday. The Paterson Restoration Corporation gave him the loan $140,000 loan at 2.25-percent interest in 2009 to renovate his restaurant, Jacksonville, on Grand Street.

NJ granted $1.6M in aid to undocumented students TRENTON: ew Jersey granted $1.625 million in state aid to over 500 undocumented students for the 2018-2019 academic year, according to state officials. The report from the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority states that 513 students received financial aid grants in the fall of 2018. The students were all part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which means that they were brought into the country illegally when they were only children.

New Jersey clergy accused of sexual abuse named NEWARK atholic Church officials in New Jersey have named nearly 200 priests credibly accused of sexual abuse.

Each of the five Catholic dioceses in the state released their own lists of names, totaling 189 in all. The lists include parishes where each priest worked, if they had more than one accuser and if the priest has either been removed from their ministry or is now deceased.

Cardinal Joseph Tobin released a video statement following the release of the names. “Victims, their families and the faithful are rightfully outraged over the abuses perpetrated against minors,” Tobin said.

Tobin also said, “Anyone aware of suspected sexual misconduct by any cleric, employee, or volunteer of the Archdiocese [should] report it immediately to law enforcement and to the Archdiocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator: 201-407-3256.”

You can designate your paid tax return preparer or another third party to speak to the IRS concerning the preparation of your return, payment/refund issues, and mathematical errors.

The third-party authorization checkbox on IRS tax forms gives the designated party the authority to receive and inspect returns and return information for one year from the original due date of your return (without regard to extensions).

1. French Fries and Potato Chips Whole potatoes are healthy and filling, but french fries and potato chips are not. They are very high in calories, and it's easy to eat way too many of them.

Sugary drinks can negatively affect your weight and general health. If weight loss is your goal, then giving up soda and similar drinks may have a big impact.

3. White Bread White bread is highly refined and often contains a lot of added sugar.

It is high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels.

One study of 9,267 people found that eating two slices (120 grams) of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (14).

Fortunately, there are many healthy alternatives to conventional wheat bread. One is Ezekiel bread, which is probably the healthiest bread on the market.

However, keep in mind that all wheat breads do contain gluten.

Some other options include oopsie bread, cornbread and almond flour bread.

4. Candy Bars Candy bars are extremely unhealthy. They pack a lot of added sugar, added oils and refined flour into a small package.

Candy bars are high in calories and low in nutrients. An average-sized candy bar covered in chocolate can contain around 200–300 calories, and extra-large bars may contain even more.

Unfortunately, you can find candy bars everywhere. They are even strategically placed in stores in order to tempt consumers into buying them impulsively.

If you are craving a snack, eat a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts instead.
