mbattled Pastor Ivan Plummer will be in court on September 18 to appeal a 10-day notice to cease management of the Emmanuel Seventh Day Church Ministries in the Bronx.

According to court papers obtained by Street Hype Newspaper, Supreme Court Judge Allison Y. Tuitt, July 19 court order, found Pastor Plummer in contempt for deliberately violating two previous court orders dated April 16, 2013 and Aug. 24, 2017.

“Defendant Plummer and all defendants, their agents and representatives are hereby enjoined from interfering with the functioning of the Board of Trustees and restrained from entering the church premises effective immediately,” Judge Tuitt ordered.

The pastor was given 10 days from July 24, 2017 to submit complete financial records of the church from 2009 to date, as well as all equipment and other properties belonging to the organization.

Failure to comply with the order would “result in further civil contempt, civil sanctions, and criminal contempt,” the judge warned.

However, within days, Plummer’s attorney, Joshua S. Brass of the Law Offices of Regina L. Darby, filed an appeal and asking the court to fix an undertaking of

The leadership battle for the church erupted on April 7, 2011, when the board accused Plummer of misappropriating church resources and failing to keep proper records.

He was then fired. But Plummer pushed back and in an attempt to maintain the power of the church, he dismissed the original board and appointed new trustees and directors.

However, Judge Tuitt deemed his action “illegal” and ruled that the original board be re-instated.

In 2013, the Bronx Supreme Court intervened in the ongoing financial dispute between the Board of Trustees and Pastor Plummer.

According to court documents obtained by Street Hype, the board and the members of the congregation alleged that Plummer, with the help of other church officers, misappropriated and embezzled church funds and had taken over sole control of all church assets.

Plummer’s decision to appeal the July 24, 2017 court order to quit the management of the church was the latest move in an ugly battle for control of the 120-member church, located at 3301 Laconia Ave. Plummer and his attorney were not available for comments.

More Educational Support Needed in the Black Communities

E

ducation and training continue to be the most important vehicles to achieve personal sustainable social and economic development.

The summer holiday is just about over for thousands of students in schools and colleges across the country. The shopping for back-to-school supplies has been robust, while just about everyone is engaged in some effort to assist students with school supplies.

In our opinion, people in the African American communities are getting the message that a good education is important for everyone, including adults and children.

But it appears that they are not reaping the benefits, especially with the increasing number of African Americans filling college classrooms or pursuing professional courses.

Despite real gains in academic achievement, the per-

formance of African American students across the country still significantly lag behind that of their white counterparts.

Sadly, educational expectations are lower for black children, according to Child Trends, a nonprofit and non-partisan research center that tracks data about children.

African American parents, most of whom are less educated than their white counterparts, do not expect their children to attain as much education as white parents expect.

Lower expectations become self-fulfilling prophecies,

contributing to lower expectations from the student, lesspositive attitudes toward school, fewer out-of-school learning opportunities and less parent-child communication about school.

In the areas of justice, several studies have revealed that people with lower wealth, lower health and lower parental education levels in most cases have more dealings with the justice system.

In other words, these negative circumstances create a perfect storm that leaves blacks without the same educational opportunities as whites.

We are sharing these findings to make the points that we

must focus more on education.

We should demand that more resources be allocated to ther schools and other educational institutions in our communities.

It is no secret that the schools in the black communities nationwide are in deplorable conditions compared with those in neighboring white areas.

Our political leaders – city, state and federal -- can do more to serve us better. But in most cases, they fail because it appears education does not top their agenda.

The politicians know that education is not the immediate needs of grown men and women trying to pay their bills each day. It is more about people being fed today and not a worry about the education of the next generation.

Getting your baby ready for school..!

A s we get ready for school, I would like to give you some ideas on the importance of helping to develop children's fine motor skills.

Having these muscles develop reduces the need for occupational therapy later on.

Fine Motor Development skills are very important. Give your baby small toys that she can grasp. You are helping your infant to develop their finger muscles. These muscles are needed for writing.

As your baby gets older you need to provide different experience that allows fine motor development.You should provide snacks that the baby will be able to pick up using the thumb and the pointer fingers. Provide opportunities that will allow the baby to develop her wrist muscles.

You can purchase developmental toys.

You can also provide items that you can find within your home.

For example, you can give your baby the top from the small liquid detergent or any other empty container. Just clean it and give it to your baby to play with.

She will try to screw on the top. This movement helps to develop the finger muscles and the wrist muscles. Once your baby is able to master one item you can add two.

Just present the items to the baby do not show her what to do. Babies love to discover and if you show her what to do you are denying her that cognitive experience to demonstrate her problem solving skills.

You are planting the roots for learning; remember that infants/toddlers put everything in their mouths don’t be alarmed. Just clean the items.

When your baby is about nine months you should allow him to feed himself with his hands.

I do not recommend high chairs because the baby is not able to sit comfortable with their feet on the floor. You should purchase the small infant chair that sits on the floor. It is called Healthy booster chair.

This chair allows your baby to sit comfortable with her feet on the floor. When your baby is comfortable she will sit there for a while and will indicate when she wants to get out. You are teaching your baby self discipline the idea on sitting a completing a task. This skill is need for school.

Your baby will play with the food, throw some on the floor and also wash her hair and face. This is natural part of development.

When your baby gets to school she will be required to sit and listen during circle time.

You are giving her that experience .Your infant and toddler learns these skills through repetition, patience and time. When your infant gets to pre-school and lacks the ability to sit for a while and listen, complete an activity or play independently for a while that is that is age appropriate.

Bronx DA charges 29 gang members on Rikers with violent attacks

BRONX ozens of current and former Rikers inmates were indicted for allegedly assaulting fellow prisoners and two jail guards.

The Bronx District Attorney says 29 gang members were involved in four separate attacks between October and February. In the first assault, six men allegedly slashed an inmate who needed more than a hundred stitches.

A

BRONX Bronx community on Wednesday night honored a young girl who suffered severe burns when another girl allegedly poured boiling water on her earlier this month.

Jamoneisha Merritt, 11, was the star of an anti-bullying block party near Morrisania.

"I feel great because mad people are about to be here," she said just before the festivities. "I just feel good."

Her family says she was the victim of the hot water challenge, for which kids and teens do pranks or dares using boiling water and post them on the internet.

Bronx girl doused with boiling water during sleepover is back home The 12-year-old who threw the water on Jamoneisha during a sleepover faces assault charges.

Jamoneisha's face is still scarred from the water, but she said she is feeling much better thanks to her friends and neighbors.

"Once they cleaned her face and she was saddled with medication, she was good, she was back to herself. She was really rocking [by the] second day in the hospital," said Jamoneisha's mother, Ebony Merritt. "Her spirit and everything, it's amazing."

New panel to evaluate New York nightlife policies

Brooklyn court officer indicted for allegedly pressuring woman for sex

BROOKLYN Brooklyn court officer is indicted for allegedly pressuring a woman to perform a sex act on him in the courthouse.

58-year old Timothy Nolan of Long Island is charged with official misconduct, second-degree coercion, and public lewdness. Erica McRae says back in October,

the officer took her to a stairwell inside of Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Nolan allegedly offered to help her boyfriend beat a case if she said yes, then he exposed himself to her.

McRae says she wants to prevent anything like this from happening again.

"I'm just grateful for the DA for pro-

ceeding along with the case and getting an indictment," McRae said.

"I don't want this to happen to anybody else, especially in the court system. This happened at court and I think if something like this was to happen again they should know that they're gonna get charged and something's gonna happen."

Citizenship firm denies involvement in Grenada passport allegations

By Caribbean News Now contributor ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: ttorneys acting for citizenship consultants Henley & Partners have denied that the firm had any knowledge or involvement in an alleged scheme to obtain a diplomatic passport from the government of Grenada for a Ukrainian businessman in exchange for a payment of US$1 million.

Specifically, Henley & Partners assert that a purported copy of a wire transfer for such a sum, ostensibly to the Wells Fargo account of Henley Global in Singapore, is "clearly bogus", "faked" and "created maliciously".

The situation first came to light in regional government circles on October 27, 2016, when the businessman in question sent an email to the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, saying that he had been dealing with “a person called Chris who represents Henley and Partner who according to him are authorized as agents and advisors to Antigua and St Lucia.”

Browne categorically told the Ukrainian that his government would not countenance any sale of a diplomatic passport and advised him to move swiftly to recover his funds.

US imposes new sanctions on Venezuelan government

By Caribbean News Now contributor WASHINGTON: he United States has imposed a new round of economic sanctions aimed at choking off money to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's regime, but "carefully calibrated" to preserve US oil imports from the South American country, according to the White House.

The latest sanctions – the fourth round in recent weeks – are the first to move beyond freezing the assets of individuals and target the government itself.

The executive order signed by President Donald Trump bars US institutions from buying new debt issued by the Venezuelan government or from the stateowned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA).

"It also prohibits dealings in certain existing bonds owned by the Venezuelan public sector, as well as dividend payments to the government of Venezuela," the White House said in a statement.

However, the sanctions will not affect US oil imports from Venezuela in that they do not apply to short-term financing for oil sales and also exempt transactions with PDVSA's US subsidiary, Citgo.

The exceptions are designed "to mitigate harm to the American and Venezuelan people," the White House said in a statement, adding that the latest sanctions are "carefully calibrated to deny the Maduro dictatorship a critical source of financing to maintain its illegitimate rule."

Last month, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on 13 current and former officials of Maduro's government, freezing their assets in the United States and preventing Americans from doing business with them.

Mega-technology companies ready to meet with Jamaica tourism

KINGSTON, Jamaica: Jamaica minister of tourism, Edmund Bartlett, is set to travel to San Francisco, California, this week to engage in strategic meetings with American technology mega-companies Google, Airbnb, and Uber Technologies Inc. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

At the time, the pressure was intended, unsuccessfully, to prevent Venezuela from going forward with a controversial election to form an all-powerful National Constituent Assembly. Days after that vote, Maduro's assets were also frozen.

Ortega, who fled Venezuela to Brazil after Maduro tried to take away the independence of the Supreme Court, said she has evidence implicating Maduro in corrupt dealings involving Odebrecht, the Brazilian construction giant at the centre of a massive bribery scandal.

Serious crimes down in St Kitts-Nevis

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (SKNIS): he proactive and sustained operations to enhance public safety by law enforcement have resulted in decreases in the number of serious crimes committed in St Kitts and Nevis, including homicides, attempted murder, and grievous bodily harm, as well as a corresponding increase in the rate of detection for all crimes in general.

Fewer Woman Lawyers in NY Courtroom Roles

ust a quarter of lawyers who have leadership roles in New York state and federal courtrooms are women, according to a new analysis by the New York State Bar Association. The gender discrepancy differed significantly between attorneys representing public entities, such as state or federal government, and those representing private parties.

Women accounted for 38.2% of lawyers representing the public, but only 19.4% of lawyers representing private parties, according to the report, by the association.

Senate Passes Bill to Help Terminally Ill Patients

he Senate on Thursday passed by unanimous consent a measure designed to make it easier for terminally ill patients to get access to experimental treatments without oversight from the Food and Drug Administration. The “right-to-try” legislation has been championed by the libertarian Goldwater Institute, which has worked to pass similar legislation in 37 states. The federal version, now headed to the House, would bar the government from blocking patients from getting access to medications that have undergone only preliminary testing in humans. Patients first would have to try all other available treatments and be unable to participate in clinical trials. The bill would provide drug companies some legal protection if a treatment results in harm of patients.

LEGAL AFFAIRS DCA investigates home healthcare agencies for sick leave violations

D

epartment of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lorelei Salas on Monday announced that its Office of Labor Policy & Standards (OLPS) has launched investigations into nearly 40 home healthcare agencies across the city that represent upwards of 33,000 workers.

General compliance issues with this industry have been reflected in OLPS’ experience enforcing the NYC Paid Sick Leave Law. Home care aides as a group have filed the third highest number of paid sick leave complaints.

OLPS has handled 94 home healthcare agency cases leading to nearly $200,000 in fines and more than $475,000 in restitution (about 12 percent of total restitution recovered) on behalf of 6,183 workers, or more than one third of all workers on behalf of whom OLPS has recovered restitution under the law in two-plus years of enforcement.

Recent New York State Department of Health data estimates that the number of home care aides working in New York City is about 203,100, making them one of the largest private sector workforces in the city.

Approximately 700 licensed Home Care Service Agencies operate nearly 850 locations in the city and dispatch this workforce mostly to private homes. Wage and hour and other labor and employment law violations among this workforce are reportedly rampant, despite recent reforms meant to raise standards like the State’s “wage parity” law and extension of federal wage and hour rights to the workforce.

DCA’s OLPS has been shifting its enforcement resources to focus on industries that tend to have higher rates of labor and employment law violations.

The Office recently sent 39 notices of investigation and requests for documents to home health agencies around the city. The agencies include a broad cross-section of agencies across the five boroughs, which collectively employ approximately 33,000 workers. The investigation will provide a comprehensive look at existing practices around compliance with paid sick leave, and ensure both that employers are clear about their labor and employment law obligations, and that workers know and can use their rights.

orkers in NYC have rights regardless of immigration status. The Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Office of Labor Policy & Standards is NYC’s central resource for workers.

Paid Sick Leave If you work in NYC for more than 80 hours a year, you can earn up to 40 hours of sick leave each year to care for yourself, your child, or other family members.

If your employer has five or more employees, you have a right to paid sick leave.

If your employer has fewer than five employees, you have a right to unpaid sick leave.

It is illegal for an employer to retaliate against you for requesting or using sick leave.

Under federal law, you may also have the right to take additional unpaid time off from work: Some workers who work for employers with more than 50 employees may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year to care for themselves or a family member or to bond with a new child. The leave may be taken all at once or from time to time.

Starting January 2018, most workers in New York will be eligible to take paid family leave to bond with a new child, care for a close relative with a serious health condition, or address certain military family needs. The amount of leave and pay will phase in over four years, starting at eight weeks paid at 50% of the worker’s salary in 2018.

Gayle returns to Windies ODI squad

amaicans Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels will make a return to One Day International cricket after being selected in the West Indies 15-man squad for the limited overs leg of their tour of the United Kingdom.

The 37 year old Gayle returns after a three year absence, having last played in a One Day International match in March 2015, while Samuels has not played since October 2016. The call-ups follow a relaxation in Cricket West Indies' criteria in order to be eligible for selection.

Jerome Taylor also makes a return to the ODI squad, having played his last match in june 2016. A fourth Jamaican, Rovman Powell has also been named to the squad.

However, Trinidadians Sunil Narine and Darren Bravo declined to be considered. According to chairman of selectors Courtney Browne, Narine has said he wants to play in the regional Super50 before playing ODIs again while Darren Bravo said he was not available for selection. Dwayne Bravo has said he is still not 100 percent fit.

omedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory, who broke barriers in the 1960s and became one of the first AfricanAmericans to perform comedy at white clubs, has died. He was 84.

He died Saturday in Washington, the family said on social media, expressing their enormous sadness while thanking people for the outpouring of love and support.

Gregory recently rescheduled an event in Atlanta because he was hospitalized.

"The family appreciates the outpouring of support and love, and respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time," Christian Gregory said.

"More details will be released over the next few days."

Gregory satirized segregation and racial injustice in his acts, and was arrested several times in the 1960s for joining civil rights rallies.

Fellow civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson paid tribute to Gregory. "He taught us how to laugh. He taught us how to fight.

He taught us how to live," he tweeted.

"Dick Gregory was committed to justice. I miss him already."

Gregory was also a health and spiritual advocate, a motivational speaker and an author. He used his comedy to attack racism, had movie appearances and even ran for

For another year a thread has surfaced on an Internet bulletin board frequented by New York cops who are placing racist, theoretical bets on how many people would be cut down by violence during the upcoming West Indian carnival and the Caribbean J’Ouvert events, News Americas has found.

On Thee Rant, under the thread “West Indian Day Parade / J’Ouvert Parade Over/Under,” many were betting on the number of murders, shootings and stabbings that could occur at the upcoming event.

The bets come as The City of New York is partnering with Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and the New York City Police Department for a safer and later start to the J’Ouvert Parade on September 4, 2017.

And as the West Indian American Day Carnival continues to be saddled by reports that attribute all the crime that occurs in Brooklyn on the Labor Day weekend, to the event.

J’Ouvert, which means “daybreak” in French, is not affiliated with the West Indian American Day carnival, which is held from August 31st at the back of the Brooklyn Museum and on Labor Day Monday along Eastern Parkway.

J’Ouvert has been marred by violence in the past years and is a celebration that occurs in the wee hours of early Monday on the streets of Flatbush and Crown Heights.

On the thread, poster ‘Was In The Bag’ predicts “2 Murders (gun), 1 Murder (other than gun), 4 Non-lethal gunshot (victims),3 Non-lethal stabbing (victims)” at the two events this year, and included a video posting of Drowning Pool’s ‘Let The Bodies Hit The Floor.”

Another poster nicknamed ‘Bozo The Cop’ bets there will be “4 public service homicides, 2 gunshot survivors, 6 stabbings, 2 ass whippings, 1 head stomping and 2 politicians complaining about the police” while ‘Luigi’ predicts: “2 shooting DOA’s, 6 shooting non-DOA’s, 1 stabbing DOA, 11 stabbing non-DOA’s, 26 sexual assaults, numerous non-sexual assaults, 16 heffers with wardrobe malfunctions, 32 heffers with extreme grinding injuries.”

Poster Lexisman stated: “I’ll take 2 murders by gunshot, 4 non lethal shootings and 2 stabbings, not likely. And a good time will be had all.”

Pharmacist Convicted of Illegally Distributing Opioids from ‘Pill Mills’

CAMDEA: Medford, New Jersey, pharmacist was convicted today for his role in illegally distributing and dispensing oxycodone from two pharmacies located in Medford, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick announced last week.

Michael Ludwikowski, 45, the owner of Olde Medford Pharmacy and Medford Family Pharmacy, was convicted of six counts in an indictment charging him with illegally distributing and dispensing oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance, and maintaining a drug-involved premises. He was convicted following a five-week trial before U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Simandle in Camden federal court. The jury deliberated for three days before returning the guilty verdict.

The trial follows the guilty plea of codefendant David M. Goldfield, also a pharmacist (who Ludwikowski had hired to work at Olde Medford Pharmacy), to engaging in a conspiracy to dispense controlled substances with Ludwikowski, and the pleas of Dontees Jones, Matthew Lawson, and Patrick Clark, all long-term customers of Ludwikowski, and Krystal Wood, a former employee of Olde Medford Pharmacy.

Sorrow continues in Nazerah Bugg case

HACKENSACK, NJ: echnically, there was justice in a Hackensack NJ courtroom Friday. Jeavonte Dennis was sentenced to 45 years in prison and Nyje Johnson to 22 years for the gang-related murder of Nazerah Bugg and the wounding of Nylijah Albert.

The men will spend decades in prison. But for the families of the victims, that does not change an irreversible outcome.

One girl was murdered, the other injured, because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And that sums up the problem in Paterson, where the shootings occurred on Sept. 20, 2014, and in other cities where

petty thugs with pistols and gang allegiances determine who lives and who dies. It was not Bugg and Albert who were in the wrong place. The corner of

North Main and Clinton streets, where they were shot, should have belonged to them. The girls were doing nothing to provoke acts of violence.

But Dennis and Johnson, while not gunning for the girls, were there to shoot. Johnson was 20, attending community college. Dennis was 17, a drug dealer and alleged member of the Paterson gang known as 230 – it’s named after a liquor store.

The two, along with three other men, came to that fateful corner in a black BMW looking for revenge for a gang-related shooting that happened earlier that day.

Whether they came to the corner intending to kill Bugg, they came with guns. Someone was bound to die.

We cannot find comfort in the sentences handed down by Judge James J. Guida. The two men’s sentences will run concurrently.

1.Weigh Their Past Factually, odds are highest that your sweetie will treat your relationship boundaries like they treated those boundaries in other relationships. In study after study, past behavior is your crystal ball; it’s the single best predictor of how any of us will behave, given similar circumstances.

It’s one reason why someone who cheated with you is likely to cheat on you. Overlook this rule of thumb, and you’ll get hurt again and again. People tend to do what and whom they have done before.

new study found little evidence that marijuana use affects kidney function in healthy young adults. The analysis appears in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN).

Because marijuana is becoming increasingly accepted in the United States, there is a critical need for studies examining its risks and benefits. Regarding kidney health, animal studies suggest that marijuana might affect kidney function, but data in humans are limited.

In the first study of its kind, Julie Ishida, MD, MAS (University of California, San Francisco and San Francisco VA Medical Center) and her colleagues examined the potential links between marijuana

The team found that at the start of the study, individuals with higher marijuana use had lower kidney function.

Upon follow-up, however, marijuana use was not associated with change in k i d n e y function over time or the appearance of albumin in the urine, which is a sign of kidney damage.

"Results from our observational study

in young adults with normal kidney function may not translate into a clinically meaningful difference and may be insufficient to inform decision-making concerning marijuana use; however, it is possible that the association between marijuana use and kidney function could be different in other populations such as older adults or patients with kidney disease, so additional research is needed," said Dr. Ishida.

In a recent study of healthy young adults, marijuana use was not associated with change in kidney function over time or the appearance of albumin in the urine, which is a sign of kidney damage. Additional studies are needed to assess the effects of marijuana in older adults and patients with kidney disease.

1. Keep portions smaller than your fist. It’s easy to overeat when you have too much food on your plate. Smaller portions help prevent overeating. Overeating can make health problems worse, especially if you have diabetes.

One way to control overeating is to reduce portion sizes when you eat.

For most foods, a reasonable portion is ½ to 1 cup – about the size of a woman’s fist.

Even if your fist is larger than that, it is still a handy measuring tool that goes everywhere you go. Just keep your portions smaller than your fist.

The two most common exceptions are: Lean meat, chicken and fish. For these foods, keep portions the size of a deck of cards (about half the size of your fist) and trim all visible fats before cooking.

Plain vegetables, including salads without dressing. You can have as much as you want because these foods are nutritious, filling and low in calories.

2. Control your hunger with filling foods that are low in calories. Foods such as lowersodium soup, salad, fruits and vegetables can help fill you up without adding a lot of calories.

These foods will satisfy hunger and help you lose weight.

Research shows that people feel less hungry when they eat a certain volume (amount) of food. High-fiber foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can provide a feeling of fullness and also digest slowly. That helps you feel satisfied longer so you eat less.

3. Keep track of what you eat. When you keep track of what you eat, you're more likely to meet your food goals. Studies show that keeping a food log or diary helps people lose weight and keep it off.

4. Make trade-offs to reduce how much sodium, saturate and trans fat and sugar you eat. Foods high in fat and sugar are often high in calories, too. But that doesn't mean you have to give up your favorite foods. Learn to make trade-offs instead. If you want to indulge in your favorite dessert, enjoy a smaller portion and eat a lower-calorie meal.

5. Enjoy more physical activity. As you already know, regular physical activity is important for keeping your heart healthy. Increasing physical activity may help you lose weight and strengthen your heart at the same time. If you feel you need extra support to lose weight, look for a weight-loss program that's been proven safe and successful.

Look for a program that: Stresses a healthy eating plan (low in saturated fat, trans fat, added sugar and sodium, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean poultry, meat and fish, and fat-free or low-fat dairy).

• Does not deprive you of the foods you enjoy.
