Focus on ‘single moms’ this Mother’s Day

n supporting the words of singer Stevie Wonder, “Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love,” we are joining the millions of people all over the world in celebrating Sunday May 14 as Mother’s Day. While Mother Day’s is a very good opportunity to honor and show respect to the women who given birth, as well as a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures in our community, merchants and other business enterprises have commercialized this all-important day to rake in billions of dollars from the sales of various goods and services.

However, Mother Day’s celebration is always personal for most of us who are blessed and fortunate to have a mother

who has provided that “motherly” care from birth to adulthood. Therefore, with great exuberance passion, love and appreciation, many of us go all out to ensure that mom is very happy on her special day.

The celebration may therefore be very good for business and commerce.

We could say a winwin season for everybody involves, but the real issues facing other mothers in our communities are being overlooked.

A case in point is a single parent who is the primary caregiver to his or her children but do not live with his or her spouse due to a divorce, being unmarried or is a widow or widower. One in four

children in the United States is being raised by a single parent — a percentage that has been on the rise and is higher than other developed countries, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The situation is more freighting in the African American community where 72 percent of black children are raised in a single parent household.

Sociologists point to several factors to explain the high figure, including a cultural shift towards greater acceptance of single-parent child rearing. The U.S. also lacks policies to help support families, including childcare at work

and national paid maternity leave, which are commonplace in other countries.

Mothers represent over 85 percent of the single parents in our community. In fact, a significant number of them are also unemployed and uneducated. It is apparent that the challenges facing single parents are many and they require moral, financial, spiritual and psychological support from everyone.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we should reflect on solutions to assist single mothers who are finding it very difficult to balance work and parenting, financial problems, childcare support and low self-esteem which are negatively impacting negatively our children. _____________________ Patrick Maitland patrick@streethype.net

FIREFIGHTERS CELEBRATE 150TH ANNIVERSARY:

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is over 150 years old and it celebrated its anniversary with all stations hosting an Open House on last Saturday in the Bronx. In the 12th Council District, Council Member Andy King (5th l) visited with the Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs. King said it was an exciting and educational experience to learn from New York's Bravest about fire and life safety as he toured the stations, listened to departments’ history and tried on FDNY clothing and apparatus. The event was free and open to the public.

MOUNT VERNON: estchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced on April 14 - that David Hardy, 22 of 269 Franklin Ave., Mount Vernon was arraigned on an indictment before Judge Barry Warhit and charged with: several charges including the murder of thirteen year old Shamoya McKenzie.

On Dec. 31, 2016 at approximately 2:28 p.m., the victim and her mother were driving eastbound along E. Third St. in Mount Vernon when three shots were fired by the defendant from a handgun at a member of a rival gang. The intended target was struck twice.

At the time of the shooting, the victim was sitting in the front passenger seat of her mother’s car when a single bullet smashed through the rear passenger window striking the victim in the head.

The victim was taken to Mount Vernon Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

An intense investigation by the F.B. I., the Mount Vernon Police Department and the Westchester County District Attorney’s office resulted in the arrest of the defendant on Jan. 15, 2017.

The defendant pled not guilty and remand continues. He faces up to twenty-five years to life in state prison. His next court date is May 16, 2017.

BROOKLYN: Brooklyn prosecutor will soon need a defense attorney, having been charged with sex abuse.

Police say Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Chrismy Sagaille is accused of grabbing a woman's face and putting his tongue in her mouth as he drove home from a party over the weekend.

He turned himself in to the NYPD's Special Victims Unit Wednesday, and now faces charges of sex abuse and forcible touching.

Sagaille was also arrested in August of last year and charged with drunk driving.

The Brooklyn DA's office says it is taking the allegations seriously, and that his case will be handled by a special prosecutor.

Williams who was found guilty on Jan. 27 of conspiring to distribute 120 kilograms of heroin and cocaine was scheduled for sentencing on May 2. However, his attorney, Andre G. Travieso, said he needs more time to “visit his client at MDC (Manhattan Detention Complex) and to obtain additional family background.”

United State District Judge Lorna G. Schofield granted the new sentencing hearing date.

Williams faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Extradited Jamaicans Lottery Scammers Appear in US

BISMARCK, N.D: ight more people have been extradited from Jamaica to face charges in the U.S. in what authorities say is a multi-million-dollar lottery scam that victimized dozens of Americans.

The case began some six years ago with a phone call to an elderly widow in a small North Dakota town.

In September 2011, Edna Schmeets, 86, of Harvey, North Dakota, received a call from a man who told her she had won $19 million and a new car, and needed only to pay taxes and fees. She lost her life savings of more than $300,000 to the scam. Word eventually reached the FBI, and authorities opened a case in 2012.

Authorities allege the sophisticated scam bilked at least 90 mostly elderly Americans out of more than $5.7 million. Fifteen people each are charged with 66 total counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering.

They are accused of calling victims, persuading them to send money, and wiring the money to bank accounts in Jamaica. Authorities have dubbed the case "Operation Hard Copy," a reference to lists of prospective victims' contact information used by scammers.

such duties as making scam phone calls and handling money. Some allegedly allowed their bank accounts to be used for the scheme.

Willocks pleaded not guilty in January.

Hunter; Willocks' girlfriend, Kimberly Hudson; Dario Palmer; O'Neil Brown; Alrick McLeod; Xanu Morgan; Jason Jahalal, and Kazrae Gray were extradited from Jamaica at the end of last month and made their initial court appearances April 27 in Bismarck. All

were ordered held without bond until detention hearings. Hudson, Brown, Palmer and McLeod pleaded not guilty. The other four didn't enter pleas because their attorneys were not present.

Among the remaining defendants, one is awaiting trial in Rhode Island, one is in custody in Jamaica awaiting extradition to the U.S., and four are still fugitives.

Sanjay Williams of Montego Bay, who

authorities say was a cohort of Willock's and ran a separate scam, was convicted by a U.S. jury in 2015 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The case is complex, involves international treaties and justice systems, and is the first of its kind in the U.S., according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Clare Hochhalter, who is leading the prosecution.

"Even with cooperation among agencies and governments, it has been a learning process for many," he said, adding that the case will create a "template" for such investigations.

Authorities last year asked for help from the Justice Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, and the case was accepted based on the organization involved and the money laundering aspect, Hochhalter said.

"To my knowledge, it is the only nondrug related (task force) case in the country," he said. No. Variations of the scam continue to victimize people in the U.S. and other countries, according to Hochhalter, who said it will take "training, resources and a global commitment of governments, citizens and law enforcement to continue the fight."

Hochhalter said Operation Hard Copy is continuing, has resulted in numerous "spinoff" cases throughout the U.S., and could prompt many more investigations in both the U.S. and Jamaica.

Bronx man indicted for carjacking, shooting spree A Bronx man has been indicted on 39 counts including Attempted Murder, Assault, Robbery and Criminal Possession of a Weapon stemming from a violent crime spree in the Wakefield section of the Bronx that left a U.S. Postal Service employee grazed by a bullet.

The defendant, Clarence Brooks, 27, of East 229th Drive, was arraigned on May 2, 2017, before Bronx Supreme Court Justice William Mogulescu. He was continued remanded and is due back in court on July 26, 2017.

Brooks was indicted on Attempted Murder first and second degree, Attempted Assault first degree, second and third-degree Assault, three counts of second-degree Menacing, first and second-degree Reckless Endangerment, first-degree Criminal Use of a Firearm, two counts each of second-degree, third-degree and fourth-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, two counts each of first, second and third-degree Robbery, two counts of fourth-degree

Grand Larceny, two counts of Petit Larceny, two counts each of fourth-degree and fifth-degree Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, two counts of third-degree Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, five counts of fourth-degree Criminal Mischief.

According to the investigation, on April 4, 2017, at Carpenter Avenue and East 232nd Street, Brooks allegedly approached the driver in a 2004 Honda Accord and tapped on the glass with a silver firearm, went to the driver’s door and ordered him out and then drove away.

A short time later, Brooks allegedly leaned out the driver’s door of the stolen vehicle and fired a bullet at the windshield of a U.S. Postal Service truck. The bullet grazed the worker’s upper right arm.

Brooks then allegedly went to a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder, opened the passenger side door and told the driver to drive him, then he entered the vehicle and put a silver gun against her torso. She refused and Brooks ordered her out and drove away in the vehicle.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: izam Mohammed, the son of a former police commissioner, was shot and killed yesterday at his home in D'Abadie, east of here, police said.

They said that Mohammed, the son of Noor Kenny Mohammed, who served as police commissioner from 1996 to 1998, was killed during an armed invasion at his home.

The police said that the victim's firearms and other items were stolen from the house.

Police also said that Nizam Mohammed, an engineer, and his wife, were robbed last week.

“We have consistently maintained the position that Venezuela should engage with its own national stakeholders through an inclusive and mediated national dialogue process to resolve their domestic challenges,” she noted.

Meanwhile, Senator Johnson Smith said that the Ministry is in touch with the Embassy of Jamaica in Caracas, Venezuela.

Speaking to journalists at a recent press briefing at the Ministry in New Kingston, the Minister said the situation in Venezuela continues to be of international concern, given the strong friendship and relations between the two countries “We have consistently maintained the position that Venezuela should engage with its own national stakeholders through an inclusive and mediated national dialogue process to resolve their domestic challenges,” she noted.

St Kitts-Nevis opposition seeks PM's resignation amid brewing scandal

BASSETERRE, St Kitts: he government of St Kitts and Nevis had not responded on Saturday to a call by the leader of the opposition, Dr Denzil Douglas, for the resignation of Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris, or other allegations leveled by Douglas in relation to a Chinese economic citizen resident in the federation who is wanted in China on financial charges.

In a statement issued on Friday, Douglas accused the prime minister of rebuffing calls for cooperation with Interpol and China.

He said, "Despite formal requests by China, as well as Interpol, to secure the return of Mr Ren Biao from St Kitts-Nevis to face prosecution in China, the current St Kitts-Nevis government is refusing to cooperate."

He added that, while the government has said there was no formal request from

China, he was reliably informed that there had indeed been several requests to the government from a Caribbean head of state whose country has diplomatic relations with China.

Harris has not heeded the urgings of his fellow Caribbean heads of government to cooperate with the government of China and with Interpol, Douglas said.

He accused the prime minister of exposing the country to severe and multi-faceted consequences and of stoutly refusing to provide a full account of the matter or to revoke Biao’s passport and do all that is necessary to stem this international scandal.

He concluded, "I therefore on behalf of the opposition call upon the prime minister to tender his resignation and to allow our great country to move beyond the quagmire in which he has placed it."

NORTHERN, NIGERIA: ifty four people went on trial in northern Nigeria on Monday on charges connected to allegations that they were celebrating a gay wedding, which are outlawed in the country.

The court began hearing the case against the defendants - most of whom were not present in court - who have been charged with criminal conspiracy and holding an illegal gathering.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan signed a bill in 2014 that criminalised same-sex relationships, despite pressure from Western governments to preserve the rights of gay and lesbian people.

The bill contains penalties of up to 14 years in prison and bans gay marriage, same-sex "amorous relationships" and membership of gay rights groups.

Defence lawyer Kimi Appah said the gathering had been a birthday party held in April to honor a man who appeared in court.

"Police got wind of it, arrested them and made trumped up charges that they are trying to celebrate a gay marriage," he told the court in Zaria, a city in the northern state of Kaduna.

The man appeared in court with three other people. They were charged with criminal conspiracy and illegal gathering, to which they all pleaded not guilty. The other accused were not present in court.

Asafa enters Guinness Book of World Records

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican sprinter and former world 100 metre record holder Asafa Powell is now the holder of a Guinness World Record.

According to a release from the athlete's management, Powell has been named a record holder for most competitive 100 metre races completed in under 10 seconds.

Powell has 97 such runs. The athlete, who refers to himself as the 'Sub-10 King', recorded his 97th sub-10 clocking with 9.94 seconds in an IAAF Diamond League race in Zurich last year.

According to the release, Powell will seek his 98th sub-10 run at the IAAF Diamond League opener in Doha, Qatar on Friday.

Groups Set for Caribbean Club Competition 2017 Finals CONCACAF recently held the draw for the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship finals that will be played at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, from May 14-21.

The draw, which was conducted by CONCACAF's Director of Caribbean Football Horace Reid determined the groups and match schedule.

George Nooks arrested on drug charges

T

KINGSTON, Jamaica: he police last Friday reported that popular entertainer George Nooks was arrested and charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act. The police reported that 56-year-old Nooks of Widcombe Heights, Kingston 6 was spotted acting in a suspicious manner by lawmen on an operation in his community shortly after 9:00 pm.

He was accosted and a bag he was carrying searched. The bag was found to contain just under two ounces of cocaine.

He was subsequently arrested and charged.

He was offered bail in the sum of $80,000 and is to appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday, May 17.

Nooks is well known for songs such as Money in My Pocket and his cover of Al Green's I'll Be Standing By (as God Is Standing By).

y new play is a rip-roaring comedy, playwright Basil Dawkins said. The play is directed by Douglas Prout and Toni Kay Dawkins.

One young couple is planning to divorce; an elderly couple is planning to get married.

The real problems of their impending marriage and divorce are more frankly "trashed" out at the hotel’s poolside than at the counseling seminars to hilarious effect. The play is suitable for the entire family.

93% of Restaurants Earn An “A” Grade

he Health Department on May 2, announced that restaurant letter grading has improved food safety in New York City as more restaurants than ever before are earning an “A” grade at the beginning of their inspection cycle. Greater compliance with food safety standards has coincided with a marked decrease in reported salmonella infections, which often result from eating contaminated food.

There has also been a 41 percent drop in sanitary violations from the peak in fiscal year 2012.

Launched in July 2010, the restaurant letter grading program has incentivized city restaurants to improve food safety practices. Today 93 percent of the city’s 24,000 restaurants are posting an “A” grade, up from 81 percent in the first year. Today a record high 62 percent of restaurants are earning an “A” on their initial inspection, which means they don’t need to be inspected again for a full year.

“Restaurant letter grading has been an unqualified success for both New York City restaurants and diners,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “New York City restaurants are performing better than ever and New Yorkers should feel confident about eating in an “A” grade restaurant.”

About Mother's Day Celebration

other's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures.

Mother's Day is not a federal holiday. Organizations, businesses and stores are open or closed, just as they are on any other Sunday in the year.

The origins of Mother's Day are attributed to different people. Many believe that two women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis were important in establishing the tradition of Mother's Day in the United States.

Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers.

Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother's Day to be celebrated each year to encourage pacifism and disarmament amongst women. It continued to be held in Boston for about ten years under her sponsorship, but died out after that.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother's Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. Ann Jarvis had organized "Mother's Day Work Clubs" to improve health and cleanliness in the area where she lived.

Anna Jarvis launched a quest for Mother's Day to be more widely recognized. Her campaign was later financially supported

by John Wanamaker, a clothing merchant from Philadelphia.

In 1908, she was instrumental in arranging a service in the Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which was attended by 407 children and their mothers. Obviously, we are remembering our mothers. Yet each year I am faced with the same question: What should I get my mama for Mother’s Day? How do I show my love?

Sometimes, to be quite honest, I get stuck. So this year I reflect: What do I want for Mother’s Day? What makes me feel special? If you’re stuck, here are three things most moms would love for you to do:

1. Relieve her of her duties.

I’m a wife, mother of two, human puppy mama, daughter, granddaughter, friend and teacher. Like all mothers, I’m busy. Busy transporting kids, cleaning messes, giving advice, lending a hand, working a job, doing laundry and attending meetings and events.

Nothing says, “I love you,” like walking into the house and finding my husband has already cleaned it. I love when my son or daughter does chores without being asked. This Mother’s Day, relieve Mom of her usual list of to-do’s by making it your responsibility.

Plan the meal. Do the laundry. Help her catch up on something for work. Galatians 5:13 says, “through love serve one another.” Honor your mom by serving her this Mother’s Day. 2. Reassure her with your words.

As a Commissioner, Rochelle convened public meetings to address a wide range of policies and programs affecting southeast District of Columbia neighborhoods, including traffic, parking, and renovation of recreational facilities, street improvements, economic development opportunities, police protection and Green initiatives.

Rochelle is no stranger to the field of public service and public administration; she has more than 10 years of experience in this field. air grows everywhere on the human skin except on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet, but many hairs are so fine they're virtually invisible.

Hair is made up of a protein called keratin that is produced in hair follicles in the outer layer of skin.

As follicles produce new hair cells, old cells are being pushed out through the surface of the skin at the rate of about six inches a year.

The hair you can see is actually a string of dead keratin cells. The average adult head has about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs and loses up to 100 of them a day; finding a few stray hairs on your hairbrush is not necessarily cause for alarm.

At any one time, about 90% of the hair on a person's scalp is growing.

Each follicle has its own life cycle that can be influenced by age, disease, and a wide variety of other factors.

This life cycle is divided into three phases: Anagen -- active hair growth that lasts between two to six years Catagen -- transitional hair growth that lasts two to three weeks Telogen -- resting phase that lasts about two to three months; at the end of the resting phase the hair is shed and a new hair replaces it and the growing cycle starts again.

City employee charged with insurance fraud

A

PATERSON NJ: former city employee has been charged with insurance fraud for allegedly delivering beer and soda for a private company while he was getting paid for injury leave from his municipal job, authorities said.

Branis Francis, 48, was terminated this year from his $25,000 position as a laborer in the Paterson recycling division, officials said.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a press release that Francis made “false and misleading statements” on the workers’ compensation claim he filed after an alleged on-the-job injury.

Paterson municipal government spent more than $6.5 million on workers’ compensation claims last year. Mayor Joey Torres’ administration launched a crackdown on workers’ compensation abuses in 2015, when he hired Samir Goow to serve as the city’s risk manager. Among Goow’s duties is monitoring employees’ injury claims.

At least one other city employee, a firefighter, has been terminated as a result of the workers’ compensation crackdown, officials said.

Guilty Plea in Escrow Theft

Elizabeth, NJ: ichael Pampalone, 34, of Elizabeth, New Jersey, pled guilty to defrauding a Rensselaer, New York, resident of $132,450.

As part of his guilty plea, Pampalone admitted that he stole money that he had promised to hold in escrow for a client seeking a mortgage. After the client sent him two wires totaling $132,450, Pampalone withdrew the money and used it for his own purposes.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 9, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. before United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino. Pampalone faces up to 20 years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to 3 years of post-imprisonment supervised release.

Judge slaps N.J. man with 8 years for trafficking crack

CAMDEN: federal judge on Monday sentenced a Gloucester County man to more than eight years in prison for his role in a criminal organization prosecutors said controlled crack cocaine sales in a city neighborhood.

Harold Miller, who pleaded guilty in Camden federal court to a charge of conspiring to distribute and possess crack cocaine with intent to distribute, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jose H. Rodriguez to 106 months in prison, accord-

ing to a statement from the office of Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick.

Authorities said Miller, 41, of Sewell, was one of four men snared in September 2015 by the FBI's South Jersey Violent Offender and Gang Task Force when investigators took down a drug-trafficking organization operating on Pfeiffer Street in Camden.

Investigators said Miller and his coconspirators -- Rasheed Wise, Rodney Wall, and David Wilkerson, all of Camden

-- were caught on court-authorized wiretaps discussing their criminal activities, and that members of the group sold drugs to a police informant.

Wise, Wall and Wilkerson all previously pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said that in addition to the prison term, Miller was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Diets are made up of three main components, carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Each of these components impact your body differently, and all three are needed in differing amounts to keep your body healthy. Some may have heard that too much sugar or carbohydrate can lead to weight gain. Therefore, many are trying to cut back on carbs. This is hard to do because most of the foods we consume are carb-rich. So what should we replace those carbs with? *Remember we can’t take away too many calories in the diet without replacing them with something else, because if you go too low on your calories you can gain weight too!!

Protein is an excellent option, that many of us don’t get enough of!

For an adult, many would say that an ideal split of calories is 50% of total daily calories from carbohydrate, 30% from fat, and 20% from protein. So how much protein does that add up to? Well…for a person on a 1600 calorie diet, that would amount to 80 grams of protein. Are YOU getting that much?

Greek yogurt averages about 12-17 g of protein per serving, while 1 regular Yoplait yogurt gives you around 6 g protein.

One egg contains 8 grams of protein…but if you throw out the yolk you lose 3 of those grams.

Home Office Deduction Often Overlooked by Small Business Owners

WASHINGTON: he Internal Revenue Service on May 5, reminded small business owners who work from a home office that there are two options for claiming the Home Office Deduction. The Home Office Deduction is often overlooked by small business owners.

As part of National Small Business Week (April 30-May 6), the IRS is highlighting a series of tips and resources available for small business owners.

Regular Method The first option for calculating the Home Office Deduction is the Regular Method. This method requires computing the business use of the home by dividing the expenses of operating the home between personal and business use. Direct business expenses are fully deductible and the percentage of the home floor space used for business is assignable to in-

direct total expenses. Self-employed taxpayers file Form 1040, Schedule C , Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship), and compute this deduction on Form 8829, Expenses for Business Use of Your Home.

Simplified Method The second option, the Simplified Method, reduces the paperwork and recordkeeping burden for small businesses. The simplified method has a prescribed rate of $5 a square foot for business use of the home.

There is a maximum allowable deduction available based on up to 300 square feet. Choosing this option requires taxpayers to complete a short worksheet in the tax instructions and entering the result on the tax return.

There is a special calculation for daycare providers. Self-employed individuals claim the home office deduction on Form 1040, Schedule C , Line 30; farmers claim it on Sched-

ule F, Line 32 and eligible employees claim it on Schedule A, Line 21.

Regardless of the method used to compute the deduction, business expenses in excess of the gross income limitation are not deductible.

Deductible expenses for business use of a home include the business portion of real estate taxes, mortgage interest, rent, casualty losses, utilities, insurance, depreciation, maintenance and repairs. In general, expenses for the parts of the home not used for business are not deductible.

Deductions for business storage are deductible when the dwelling unit is the sole fixed location of the business or for regular use of a residence for the provision of daycare services; exclusive use isn't required in these cases.
