Celebrate and honor mothers with tolerance and respect for each other

other’s Day celebration on May 8 was another big seller for the commercial industry with record sales of a wide range of gifts to our mothers. The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that American consumers spent some $22 billion for Mother's Day, up from $13.4 billion in 2009.

This places it number two after Christmas and well ahead of Father's Day on the list of highest-spending holidays.

But Mother's Day should not be about retailers topping sales records and creating the most commercially viable day worldwide. We need to focus on empowering women to take care of themselves and to build the next generation.

As frequently quoted by development specialists, “If you educate a man, you educate one person. If you educate a woman, you educate a nation.”

As a society, we must create a balance of building the human resource capacities of both men and women.

However, several studies reveal that educating girls and women is especially effective because when we educate them, the benefits are felt throughout the whole community. It has been described as a magic multiplier in the development equation.

American policy-makers appear to be in agreement with such statements. However, African American women are especially not being afforded enough resources to educate and transform their families.

At every level of our education system, including secondary and tertiary, women are out-performing men, yet men continue to dominate the top management positions as well as the higher income group.

Women comprise the poorest among all categories of the American demography and most of the poverty found in black communities is found in female-headed households. In fact, black femaleheaded households were just about 18 percent in 1950 compared to a troubling 68 percent today.

The poverty rate among black married couples has been in the single digits since 1994 and is about 8 percent today. The socalled black illegitimacy rate is 75 percent, and in some cities, it’s 90 percent.

The legacy of slavery has been blamed for the increasing number of black female-headed households and children growing up without their biological fathers.

Yet, it continues to define us a people. We always urge men and women to have a good relationship with each other, but it may require divine intervention to solve the competing or conflicting issues plaguing black couples.

If we are serious about empowering women in support of Mother’ Day, we must take the burden off the thousands of women who are the sole breadwinner of their families.

Too many fathers are absent from homes. Where are the fathers in the African American communities and why are men not at home?

Men are not just spermdonors; they are needed to support the social and economic needs of their families.

Relationships among human beings are very difficult, but we need each other and to successfully grow the family.

As we celebrate and honor mothers, each of us should be part of the solution by displaying more tolerance and respect for each other.

Are people fearful of a Trump presidency?

E

arlier, I had written a newspaper article regarding the characteristics of the next president of the United States. So, now it’s either the first female president -- Hillary Clinton -- or an individual with nuts made of hardened steel -- Donald Trump.

Trump has won as the Republican standard bearer based on voicing what many Americans say privately in their homes or in their social circles. However, he is creating fears in individuals and “making America the laughing stock of the world.”

Therefore, many caricatures are being made of him.

To address the concerns of those who are fearful of a Trump’s presidency, there is no need to pack ones’ grips or suitcases to leave America. In this country, the winners get the spoils of victory but the losers maintain their Civil Rights. In our democracy, our Civil Rights cannot be taken away overnight.

In addition, the bureaucrats run the country while the president sets the direction.

If the president makes an unpopular or unjust request sending back all undocumented Jamaicans/Caribbean/Irish/Jeish immigrants, for example), the

Another point is that the presidential candidate could choose a vice-presidential candidate with the presidential knowledge he lacks. We saw that with President Bush and vice-president Dick Cheney. This is not a good example as Cheney is re-

sponsible for the rise of ISIS. While many are lambasting Trump as a buffoon, he has shown himself to be wise in eliminating the cast of dubious characters who wanted to be president, and he may have done America a great service. He may even show how smart he is by selecting a Black, Latino, female or a lesbian running mate.

Notwithstanding, what is galling regarding the mobilizing of bias against Trump is that people from other industrialized nations are questioning the political wisdom or even the intelligence of the American people.

To them I would say, until they can elect an actor, a Black, or a peanut farmer to be a leader of England, Canada, China, France, Japan, Russia, or Germany, they should be mindful in lecturing Americans.

Americans have elected such individuals as president and the Union is still strong. But then, in America, we let people have their say; so in retrospect, other nations can freely and fearlessly speak their minds on political and other happenstance (occurrences) in America. Yes, we need to address injustice. I did not say we are perfect.

Five men raped 18 yr-old woman

n 18-year-old woman was savagely attacked by a group of men who took turns raping her during a horrific scene at a Brooklyn playground, officials said Saturday.

The victim was inside Osborn Playground in Brownsville about 11:15 p.m. on Thursday when the five suspects approached her and her father near the park’s handball courts, officials said.

One of the suspects — described by police sources as a man in his 20s or 30s in a red jacket and black pants — pulled a gun and ordered the victim’s dad to leave the playground, officials said.

“Get the f— out of here,” he ordered, according to police sources.

Each of the five men then raped the young woman, the NYPD said.

Woman gets 25 yrs for brutal killing of her boyfriend

BROOKLYN Brooklyn’s woman will spend 25 years to life in prison for what a prosecutor calls the especially brutal killing of her boyfriend in 2012.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown says 42-year-old Anna Adams of Prospect Lane in Brooklyn was sentenced Wednesday for second-degree murder and other crimes.

Jeffrey Perkins, 46 was stabbed in the neck, back and head. His remains were partially wrapped in bed sheets and then doused with bleach.

Brown says there were blood trails throughout the house and even outdoors.

When the defendant was taken into custody she was wearing just one shoe. The prosecutor says a matching shoe was found under the victim's body.

The hotel hired 100 percent of its workers locally. “Not only is this new business helping residents who are still reeling from Hurricane Sandy, but it is also working to increase the job market right here on the peninsula,” said Councilman Richards.

Bronx ‘party crasher’ sentenced to 18 years

A

Bronx man – who was one of six New York City teenagers accused in the fatal beating and stomping death of an 18-yearold Long Islander whom they perceived to be gay – has been sentenced to 18 years in prison on his plea of guilty to manslaughter last month. The attack occurred in March 2011 as the victim left a birthday party in Woodhaven, Queens.

Three other individuals have previously pleaded guilty in the case and have been sentenced to prison.

Alex Velez, 21, of the Bronx who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on April 20, 2016, appeared on Tuesday before Queens Supreme Court Justice Joseph Zayas and was sentenced to 18 years in prison and five years’ post-release supervision.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said that, according to the charges, Anthony Collao, 18, of Long Island, and another individual had just left a party in Woodhaven on March 12, 2011, when the defendants – Alex Velez, Calvin Pietri, Luis Tabales, Christopher Lozada, Nolis Ogando and Jonathan Echevarria – chased them after having made derogatory remarks. Three of the defendants were allegedly carrying what appeared to be a stick, pipe and cane.

At approximately 12:50 a.m., Velez, Pietri and Tabales and Lozada – allegedly along with Ogando and Echevarria and others – caught Mr. Collao on 90th Street, between 88th and 89th Avenue, and threw him to the ground and began to punch, kick and strike him with objects and a piece of lattice fencing before stealing his personal property – including an Atlanta Braves baseball cap and sneakers. Mr. Collao died two days later as a result of injuries he sustained during the attack.

About fifteen minutes after the attack, police apprehended five of the defendants in the vicinity of Woodhaven Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue and recovered a metal pipe with blood on it near the victim and a piece of fencing. A sixth defendant was apprehended three months later.

Calvin Pietri, 22, of Woodhaven, Queens, pleaded guilty in May 2013 to first-

degree gang assault and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Luis Tabales, 21, of Richmond Hill, pleaded guilty in May 2013 to first-degree gang assault and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Christopher Lozada, 22, of Woodhaven, pleaded guilty in December 2013 to second-degree assault and was sentenced to four years in prison. The cases

against Nolis Ogando, 23, of Ridgewood, and Jonathan Echevarria, 21, of Brooklyn, are presently pending trial.

The investigation was conducted by the District Attorney’s Hate Crimes Bureau, the New York City Police Department’s 102nd Precinct’s Detective Squad, the Queens Homicide Squad and the Hate Crimes Unit.

World’s oldest person dies in Brooklyn at 116

B

rooklyn resident Susannah Mushatt Jones, the world’s oldest person, died Thursday night at age 116.

Robert Young, a senior consultant for the Gerontology Research Group, said Jones died at a senior home after being ill the past 10 days.

Jones was born in a small farm town near Montgomery, Ala., in 1899. She was one of 11 siblings and attended a special school for young black girls. Relatives have attributed her long life to her love of family and generosity to others.

Jones became Guinness World Records’ official oldest person when 117year-old Misao Okawa died in Tokyo last year.

Italy’s Emma Morano, just a few months younger than Jones, is now the unofficial world’s oldest person.

MOUNT VERNON: imone Barrett Johnson, 29 of a Mount Vernon address was recently convicted of ID Theft.

Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty said Johnson assumed the identity of an Ohio resident by using the person’s identifying information between February 20 and February 23, 2014.

Johnson used the victim’s Marion Community Credit Union Debit Card to paid her cable bill in the amount of $181 and purchased shoes from NastyGal.com for $342.

The victim’s name and home address were used as the billing address, but the defendant’s home address was the shipping address.

Johnson was tracked down by a Mount Vernon Police Department detecting using her email address and street address.

Johnson was charged with second-degree identity theft, a felony, and third-degree unlawful possession of personal identification information and larceny, a misdemeanor.

McCarty said Johnson caused the victim, who earns about $400 per week, a financial loss of $533. He said due to the nature of the theft, that money cannot be credited back to the victim or her credit union.

Johnson is being held at the Westchester County Jail and is scheduled for sentencing June 15, 2016 She faces a maximum of four years in prison.

he Obama administration is directing public schools around the country including those here in New York City, to allow transgender students access to bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.

An official letter is being sent to public school districts Friday.

While the letter sent from the U.S. Depart-

ments of Education and Justice does not have any new legal requirements, the White House says it is meant to clarify the need to educate students in non-discriminatory environments.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said, "There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students

on the basis of their sex."

Jared Fox, the city Department of Education's LGBT Community Liaison, also released a statement backing the directive, adding, "We have guidelines in place to ensure every school building provides a safe and supportive learning environment that allows students to use the bathroom of their gender identity."

Tension between Jamaicans and Trinidad

KINGSTON, Jamaica: amaica's relationship with its neighbors to the base of the Caribbean archipelago, Trinidad and Tobago, has been an uneasy one for at least the past decade in one specific area -- it believes that its citizens are too often denied entry and unfairly treated when arriving at Trinidad's Piarco International Airport.

This concern usually leads to discussions in the Jamaican blogosphere about the ongoing trade gap between the two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations, conflating the two separate issues of trade and immigration. It also fuels a general public perception in Jamaica that its nationals are not particularly welcome in some other CARICOM territories, Trinidad in particular.

Over 150 Jamaicans have been denied entry to the twin-island republic this year alone -- a higher rate of refusals than in 2015, so far.

Moreover, Trinidad noted that it had approximately 19,500 illegal Jamaican immigrants in 2014. While efforts have been made at intervals over the past decade -- including the signing of a joint agreement to facilitate easier trade and freedom of movement signed by both foreign ministers in 2013 -- problems persist. Since the 2013 agreement, further complaints of mistreatment at Trinidad's port of entry have been reported.

It isn't just Trinidad and Tobago. In that same year, the Caribbean Court of Justice awarded Jamaican Shanique Myrie total damages of over 77,000 Barbadian dollars (about US$39,000) after she took the Barbados government to court over unfair treatment.

Myrie alleged that when she travelled to Barbados on March 14, 2011, she was discriminated against because of her nationality, subjected to a humiliating body cavity search, detained overnight in a cell and deported to Jamaica the following day. Myrie also claimed that a Barbadian immigration officer made derogatory remarks towards her.

ruba with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of $23,353, followed by the Bahamas at $22,217 and Trinidad and Tobago at 21,323 are the richest countries in the Caribbean.

While there are naturally a number of ways to measure wealth — and none is perfect — one measure is to look at a given country’s GDP per capita.

It’s at least a good indicator of the general standard of living in the country, as of course high concentrations of wealth in the hands of a smaller number of people can skew the data .

So we compiled a list of Caribbean countries using data from the last four years from the World Bank’s data center, listed in US dollar equivalents.

While GDP data isn’t available for every territory in the Caribbean, it is available for the vast majority of independent and constituent countries.

So what’s the “wealthiest” country in the Caribbean, according to GDP? It’s Aruba, with a GDP per capita of $23,353, followed by the Bahamas at $22,217 and Trinidad and Tobago at 21,323.

Thousands in Suriname protest against electricity price hike

PARAMARIBO, Suriname:

ver 5,000 disgruntled citizens took to the streets in Suriname’s capital Paramaribo on Friday to protest against a steep price hike for electricity.

The move to increase the price came just days after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advised the Bouterse-administration to cut back on subsidizing electricity bills.

The government subsidizes the national power company annually by over 1 billion Surinamese dollars (US$160 million). The higher rates took effect on May 1 and people will have to pay higher bills starting late June. From the beginning, the opposition, the private sector, trade unions and part of the coalition in parliament were against the increases.

A last ditch effort from President Desi Bouterse on Thursday afternoon could not prevent a massive turnout at Friday’s rally.

During a radio interview, the president announced that the price increases are being postponed for the time being. During the coming days the government will discuss the matter further with the unions and business sector and also seek advice from the Social and Economic Council, before taking a final decision, Bouterse said.

However, the organizers of the protest refused to call off the rally. Although the price increase for electricity was the straw that broke the camel’s back, citizens also complain about the fact that life has become more expensive since the government devalued the Surinamese dollar in November last year, and prices for all goods and services have risen correspondingly.

Reggae Boy suspended and fined for violent conduct

TAMPA, Fla. he United Soccer League has suspended Jamaican forward Romeo Parkes for the remainder of the 2016 season and fined him an undisclosed amount for attacking Canadian international defender Karl Ouimette in a game Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds had already terminated Parkes’ contract. Parkes and Ouimette, a former Impact player, were both red-carded for their part in a melee late in the game between Pittsburgh and the New York Red Bulls II. As they began to walk off the field, Parkes kicked Ouimette from behind, knocking him to the ground.

The 23-year-old from Repentigny was stretchered off, but was not seriously injured, according to mlssoccer.com.

“There is no place in our game for this type of unprofessional conduct and our decision reinforces the USL’s commitment to preserving the integrity and reputation of the game,” USL president Jake Edwards said in a statement Monday. “Player safety is paramount and any type of behaviour that is detrimental to the well-being of our players will not be tolerated.”

Pittsburgh owner Tuffy Shallenberger apologized to fans, the Red Bulls II and Ouimette.

Bill Mckoy returns as Councilmember V eteran Jamaican-American council member Bill McKoy won in Paterson NJ’s 3rd Ward Council race. Many political insiders expected McKoy, a four-term incumbent, to have to sweat out tight numbers, but he ended up getting 310 votes more than his nearest rival.

McKoy, citing his 16 years in office, said experience is what counts. “Sound experience and proven leadership still matters, and the voters chose that,” he said.

PATERSON: judge on Friday sentenced a Paterson man to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his girlfriend two years ago in a dispute over their daughter.

“I didn’t mean to do it,” a tearful Perfis Pena-Nunez said in Superior Court in Paterson. “I am very ashamed.”

Pena-Nunez, 32, continued to weep when two of his relatives — who were among nearly a dozen family members who attended the sentencing — spoke in his support and apologized to the family of his victim, Jackie Delarosa-Rodriguez.

Pena-Nunez was initially charged with murder and weapons offenses, and faced up to life in prison. He later pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and agreed to a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. He must

serve more than 25 years before he is eligible for parole.

During his guilty plea in March, PenaNunez admitted in court that he and Delarosa-Rodriguez, who was 26, previously were in a relationship and had a daughter together. He said that on Sept. 9, 2014, he went to Delarosa-Rodriguez’s home on Belmont Avenue in Paterson and the two of them began arguing about their daughter.

He said that in the middle of the argument, he pulled out a gun and shot her in the presence of the 1-year-old daughter. He said he later went to the Paterson police headquarters and confessed to the killing.

Authorities said that following PenaNunez’s confession, they went to his girlfriend’s home and found her lying on the garage floor.

He received 1,028 votes, followed by Flavio Rivera with 718, Lilisa Mimms with 479, and Kenneth Simmons with 351.

Luis Velez prevailed in the 5th Ward with 1,001 votes to 553 for Wendy Guzman and 371 for Chrystal Cleaves.

Michael Jackson, the 1st Ward incumbent, won reelection with 936 votes, followed by Veronica Ovalles with 389 and Antoinette Brevard with 212.

Dear Divine Diva: 'm a 23-year-old guy who, due to money problems, credit card bills and student loans, recently moved back with my parents.

Before I moved in they made me agree to a written contract that included no drinking, no smoking of any kind, a midnight curfew, getting a job and stating that once I move out I can't move back in again. I get what they're trying to do, but I feel like they are treating me like a child. I only agreed to the terms because I was desperate.

I have abided by all the rules, but they still are suspicious of me breaking the con-tract after five months under their roof. I want to move out, but I am still unable to do so.

KLAS Media’s CEO, Ann Thompson says the selected children will be a part of a documentary that will be entered in various film festivals throughout the world.
