Street Hype Writer amaican born model Alexia Palmer will have to wait until the end of March when a Manhattan judge is expected to decide whether to throw out the model's wage lawsuit against GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump's modeling agency, according to a clerk in the judge’s office.

Reports from multiple sources say the model is suing the billionaire real-estate magnate for racketeering, breach of contract, mail fraud and violating wage laws for immigrants.

Palmer alleged in an October 2014 lawsuit that Trump Model Management only paid her $3,880.75, plus cash advances totaling $1,100, from 2011 to 2013, even though the agency filed immigration documents to obtain a special work visa for the then-17-year-old Palmer, certifying she would work “full-time” and earn $75,000 a year.

In an interview with ABC News, Palmer said that she had been exploited by the agency. “That’s what slavery people do; you work and don’t get no money,” she said.

Let’s celebrate our women

n March 8, the world took time out to celebrate International Women's Day. But let us not stop there in recognizing the significant contributions of women worldwide. As the late American religious and political leader, Brigham Young, observed: “You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.”

Women across the globe continue to make great strides, and over the last few decades have been out-performing men at just about every level of our education spectrum. These gains in education spans racial and ethnic groups and is also evident in just about every corner of the globe, developed as well as undeveloped.

However, women have been facing several other issues

as noted by the International Women's Day 2016 campaign theme #PledgeForParity. This call to take action is seeking the support of ordinary people to make a pledge, financial and otherwise, to help accelerate gender parity.

We should consider the pledge to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, challenge conscious and unconscious biases and discrimination against women, call for genderbalanced leadership, value women’s and men's contributions equally, and create inclusive and flexible cultures.

We need to support and empower our women to contribute more to the social, economic, cultural and political advancement of our community.

Nonetheless, we have much to celebrate on the achievement

of women. But we cannot be comfortable if we continue to record a high level of poverty in households headed by a single woman and sit on our laurels as

progress towards gender parity slows in many places.

The celebration of “Women's Day” should not be seen as a mere personal sentimental expression for people in relationships, but a deliberate and structured effort to fix these germane problems affecting our women.

“Women's Day” should not be the exclusive preparative of some so-called men of “substance” demonstrating or getting excited about their love and affection for women. At the same time, women in general need to be more genuine and proactive in support of other women.

As we reflect on the celebration of “Women's Day” 2016, we are urging everyone to be more genuine and supportive of women and not be cynical and half-hearted detractors.

The challenges facing Jamaica’s new PM?

amaica, on Thursday March 3, 2016, celebrated the swearing in of Andrew Michael Holness as Prime Minister of the largest English speaking Caribbean nation by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.

Prime Minister Holness is no stranger to the process because back in 2011 he was sworn in after then Prime Minister Bruce Golden stepped down from the position and he was elevated through party selection to head a new Jamaica Labor Party government.

Prime Minister Holness took control of the government this time around after defeating the Portia Simpson Miller lead People’s National Party in general elections held on February 25, 2016 where his party secured 32 of 63 seats. This in essence is the closest result in any of Jamaica’s parliamentary elections since independence. The result of this election will see Prime Minister Holness traversing unchartered waters with this one seat majority.

Because of this razor thin majority in parliament, it has set the tongues and keyboards of political pundits and analysts wagging and click clacking as they try to make sense of how things will play out over the next five years.

Amongst the early predictions of things to come is that Holness could trigger off open warfare again which could result in members of his own team crossing the floor to join the opposition. Just one such incident could result in the tipping of the scale towards the opposition, who would automatically be asked to form a new government.

It is based on these scenarios that it is believed Mr. Holness might be forced to seek a new mandate by going back to the polls in the not too distant future.

But those scenarios are but only two of how things could play out.

The new Prime Minister has inherited a house that was run on a very tight purse string by disciplined fiscal managers which was headed by Finance Minister Dr. Peter Phillips.

But he rode to victory on a promise of no income tax for people making up $J1.5M or $18,000 on average for each person. This message was deceptively delivered causing many people with very low income or even the unemployed believing they would receive $18,000. This is the promise that could lead to the downfall of Mr. Holness. How can he take up to $30 billion from an already tight budget?

With the reduction of tax intake and the IMF keeping a close watch on how Jamaica manages its financial resources and is expecting the country to come up with $120 billion, up from $60 billion in order to pass the next test, one wonders where will Mr. Holness get the money after giving such a large tax break.

Just think, if you are on a tight budget in running your house and you decided to start giving away up to 60% of your income to your church, what do you think would happen?

You will have to find ways of getting more money because your mortgage lender is expecting your monthly payment, the children need food, clothing, lunch money as well as telephone, light and water bills are due.

In the case of the country Jamaica, increased taxation is the quickest way. Based on this assumption, one can expect an increase in the General Consumption Tax (GCT) to make up the shortfall. The question here then is, how happy or understanding will consumers be after finding that the price of everything has increased.

These are amongst the challenges Mr. Holness will have to overcome in order to have a successful tenure as PM of Jamaica.

With that in mind, all the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) have to do is dust themselves off and be ready at all times for the eventuality of a snap election.

Palmer’s case also comes as Trump is increasingly being questioned by his political rivals about his treatment of women and immigrants, and specifically, his frequent use of the guest worker visa known as H-1B. The agency is reported to have taken 80 percent of Palmer’s earnings as expenses and fees but only found her 21 shoots over three years. And under the terms of her visa, she could not work anywhere else if she wanted to stay in the U.S. Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s attorney, Alan Garten, disputed Palmer’s claim, claiming that she was treated the same as any other fashion industry prospect and made little money because “she had a lack of work.”

She’s a model that engaged Trump Model Management to be her model management company.” Rosen continued to say, “That is customary in the industry. We fully expect a decision reflecting that she was not an employee of Trump Model Management.”

Texas man was arrested in New Rochelle on drugs and weapons charges Thursday.

The Westchester County Police said Jose Ramirez, 35, of Bowie, TX was stopped on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway near Webster Avenue in New Rochelle for a traffic violation.

He was driving a rented 2016 Hyundai Sonata. He did not have a valid driver’s license and his name was not on the sedan’s rental agreement.

County Police Officer Christian Gutierrez said he detected a strong odor of marijuana in the car.

After Ramirez was taken into custody, Gutierrez and his partner Jax, a narcotics detection canine, searched the vehicle and allegedly found a loaded handgun inside a duffle bag and 13 ounces of marijuana inside a plastic container hidden near a wheel well in the trunk.

20-year-old Brooklyn man was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison for the murder of Gilbert Kelley, a 57year-old homeless man who was shot dead in Clinton Hill last year following a brief verbal dispute.

by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog, following his conviction in November on charges of second-degree murder and seconddegree criminal possession of a weapon following a jury trial.

According to trial testimony, on March 15, 2014, at approximately 4 a.m., the defendant, who was 18 years old, and five of his friends were on the way home from a party when they exited the subway near Grand Avenue in Clinton Hill. The group then turned onto Grand Avenue and started to walk towards Lafayette Gardens, a few blocks away.

As they walked up Grand Avenue, according to trial testimony, they encountered Gilbert Kelley, 57, a local homeless man who often swept the sidewalks of Grand Avenue and helped the homeowners on that block by doing odd jobs such as carrying groceries, raking leaves and shoveling snow.

Kelley was pushing his shopping cart at the time and told the defendant and his friends to be quiet because the neighbors were sleeping. The defendant and his friends then got into a dispute with Kelley and started to approach the victim, who pulled out a kitchen knife. The defendant and his friends then crossed to the opposite side of the street, and the defendant then pulled out a .380 caliber handgun and fired, striking the victim in the chest, and ran off.

MOUNT VERNON: t’s a new day in Mount Vernon, according to first-time Mayor Richard Thomas, who preached patience and confidence for the future at his inaugural State of the City address.

On Thursday night at the Rebecca Turner Elementary School, Thomas touched on various problems that have recently plagued his city, including infrastructure issues, funding the school district and “zombie housing” that has become a common sight - and blight - in the city.

Barely three months into his first term at the helm of Mount Vernon following the much-maligned reign of former Mayor Ernest Davis, Thomas implored a capacity crowd to ignore the sins of the past and look forward toward what he envisions as a bright future for the city.

“Issuing the ‘State of Our City’ is troublesome, because the problem we face didn’t just happen overnight, nor will they be fixed overnight,” he said. “Moving forward means making the hard decisions to bring about a new day in Mount Vernon.

Thomas spoke of a vision for Mount Vernon that included improved schools, increased collaboration between city stakeholders, and more transparency in official city actions.

“The ‘State of Our City’ is becoming hopeful. It’s the same hope that has been spreading to our families,” he said. “We need to have the same hope that the next generation of Mount Vernon lives can be better than ours.

NYPD cop who shot Ramarley should be fired, protesters say F NY, NY: amily members of Ramarley Graham are calling on city officials to fire the NYPD officer who killed the Bronx teen in 2012.

They joined supporters for a rally outside City Hall.

It comes days after the U.S. Justice Department cited insufficient evidence as the reason behind its decision not to pursue the case through a grand jury.

Graham was shot and killed by Officer Richard Haste inside the bathroom of his family's home. Police believed he had a gun, but no weapon was found.

Graham's mother, Constance Malcolm, says the other officers involved should be out of a job. "We can't have these people on the force," she said. "I asked de Blasio for a meeting, and I still haven't gotten a response from him yet. So let me find out you're not going to do your job, because I figure you're going to be a one-term mayor."

Police Commissioner William Bratton says a departmental trial against Haste will now move forward and that the NYPD decided on its own to hold off on the internal trial until U.S. attorney Preet Bharara finished his investigation.

Earlier this year, Bratton implied he was asked to delay any discipline. "That doesn't make any difference. We do that as a matter of course, whether he requested it or not," Bratton said. "We, as a matter of practice, so we don't step their investigation by interview-

ing our personnel on an administrative matter that then may impact on the more significant criminal case."

Haste is on modified duty and remains stripped of his gun and badge.

Unscrupulous Contractor Sentenced For Stealing $85,900 from Homeowners

BROOKLYN: ominick Valoroso, 42, of East 66th Street, in Mill Basin, Brooklyn was sentenced last Friday by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice John Hecht to three years’ probation following his guilty plea on January 7, 2016 to one count of first-degree scheme to defraud. At the time of the plea, the Court ordered civil judgments of restitution in the amount of $85,900 to be entered for the four victims.

According to the guilty plea, between June 4, 2011 and July 7, 2013, the defendant

entered into signed contracts with four different homeowners – three in Park Slope and one in Prospect Heights – to perform work on their property, during part of which time he was not licensed due to complaints filed against him.

The defendant took $14,700 from one homeowner, and did not do any work; he took $54,400 from a second homeowner and completed just $10,400 of the work; he took $21,200 from a third homeowner and did not do any work; and he took $6,000 from a fourth homeowner and did not do any work.

Former Curacao prime minister sentenced to three years in prison for corruption

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao: errit Schotte, former prime minister of Curacao, has been found guilty of corruption and sentenced to three years in prison.

The judge also ruled that Schotte cannot stand for election to public office for five years. The penalty corresponded to that sought by the Public Prosecutor (OM).

Gerrit Schotte, former Prime Minister of Curacao Schotte’s life partner, Cicely van der Dijs (owner of the gas stations VanDis) was also found guilty. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison, of which nine is conditional. This means that she will only stay in prison for nine months.

Schotte was accused of several other offences including money laundering and forgery. The judge said that he abused his position as prime minister.

According to the OM, Schotte received funds from the Italian mafia linked St Maarten casino boss, Francesco Corallo, to establish his political party. As prime minister, Schotte, as alleged by the OM and found proven by the judge, abused his power in favour of Corallo.

Schotte was prime minister of Curacao from 2010 until 2012. He was the first prime minister of the new country Curacao, after the Netherlands Antilles was abolished. He also founded the political party MFK, which is now the largest opposition party in parliament.

As expected, Schotte announced through his defence lawyer Eldon Sulvaran that he will appeal the judge’s decision. “We will appeal, which means that Schotte should still be considered an innocent man,” Sulvaran said.

Bronx DA Seeks $11.5M to Fund her Office

By Andrew Denney, New York Law Journal ewly elected Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark told New York City Council members Tuesday that her office needs an additional $11.5 million to hire 164 more employees and create a satellite office on Rikers Island, among other initiatives.

Clark's request is nearly 20 percent more than the $59.6 million Mayor Bill de Blasio included for her office in his preliminary 2016-17 budget. The extra funding would grow the Bronx DA's office, now with 691 employees, including 458 prosecutors, by more than 25 percent.

"My borough cannot go on like this, as a national emblem of criminal justice gone haywire," Clark told the council's public safety committee.

All told, de Blasio proposed to spend $344 million for the city's five district attorneys and the special narcotics prosecutor in the fiscal year that begins July 1, up from $337 million budgeted for the current fiscal year.

The preliminary budget does not include increases to staffing at the prosecutors' offices, which have a combined head count of 3,357.

Clark became district attorney in January, succeeding Robert Johnson, who held the office for 26 years. Johnson is now a Supreme Court justice.

Clark wants to launch the Rikers Island Prosecution Bureau, with 25 additional prosecutors to investigate and prosecute crimes committed by inmates, correction officers and visitors.

She also wants the city to work with the Office of Court Administration to create a new court part on Rikers Island, which she said would save money by reducing the number of times defendants and witnesses need to be produced at the Bronx Hall of Justice on East 161st St.

I.O.C retesting hundreds of doping samples

T

he International Olympic Committee I.O.C says it is retesting hundreds of doping samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics to eradicate drug cheats before they can compete in this year’s Summer Games in RIO. The IOC stores blood and urine samples from each games so they can be reanalysed years later with improved testing methods.

Any positive tests can lead to retroactive sanctions, disqualifications and loss of medals.

The statute of limitations for retesting was extended in 2015 from eight to 10 years, meaning the Beijing samples remain valid through 2018.

Scientific Techniques will continue to improve in the next two years, the IOC is keeping the other Beijing samples for retesting closer to the 2018 deadline. It’s not the first time that samples from Beijing have been retested.

Armory Announces Indoor Marathon Record Challenge

NEW YORK, NY: n assault on the world records in the indoor marathon for men and women will be held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, April 9, 2016.

The two separate races, one for men and one for women, will be contested as part of the larger inaugural Armory NYC Indoor Marathon to be held at The Armory’s banked 200-meter track from April 8 to 10.

There will be 12 other marathons held during the three days at The Armory. All of the other races will be team relay marathons where each participant will run only a portion of the marathon.

The lone individual races will be limited to 40 men and 40 women. The women’s race will go off at 1 p.m. April 9, the men’s at 4:30pm. Online registration is now open. Entries will be accepted based on past per-

The existing records are considered to be 2:27:21 for the men, by the American Michael Wardian, set in 2010 in Arlington, Va., and 2:53:53 for the women, by Monika Kalicinska in 2014 in Toronto.

Kalicinska’s performance was done on an oversized track, longer than 200 meters, but it is believed to be the fastest ever run indoors by a woman. Wardian ran his race in 2010, on a flat 200meter track, breaking the previous world best of 2:34:54 set 82 years earlier by Joie Ray, in Boston in 1928.

Lewis to replace Simmons in West Indies ICC World T20 squad

KOLKATA, India -vin Lewis has been named as the replacement for Lendl Simmons in the West Indies squad for the International Cricket Council’s World Twenty20 Tournament.

The 24-year-old left-handed batsman will join the team ahead of the start of the global event.

The 29 year old had what he referred to as a minor ankle injury but says his preparation has been going well otherwise.

“I’m fully in training now and training harder than I was training earlier this season to regain my fitness and to catch up on the lost time. Everything is going smooth and going well. He (coach Glen Mills) will look and see when I’m fit and when I need to compete; hopefully it will be very soon because I’ve been pushing myself and working very hard to get my season opener to see where I’m at and what I need to do to continue pushing forward,” said the six-time Olympic gold medalist.

Billboard calls Sean Paul ‘Dancehall King’

Billboard Online in a recent article titled “How Rihanna’s ‘Work’ Made Dancehall Reign in Pop Again” referred to Sean Paul as the dancehall King with SP’s Temperature in 2006 being the last dancehall song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot One Hundred charts. This has opened a can of worms with dancehall insiders.

What defines a king of dancehall? Is it just about the sales? It is clear from research that Billboard conclusions are all based on sales, but dancehall is more than the sales. Since the publication last week, dancehall industry professionals have been weighing in.

Veterans like YellowMan, Shabba Ranks and Beenie Man have all been tossed around as having done the ground work to be considered Kings in their own rights.

Sean Paul has made the sales, topped the charts and has a Grammy under his belt all without running any sort of dancehall space in Jamaica, and running the space is what many consider to be the true mark of a dancehall King.

The multi-faceted Jade was born and bred in Old Harbour. She absorbed inspiration from them and it fired her up to go after her own dreams.

Not surprisingly, Jade's favorite pastime is recording her music in studio and her efforts are paying off. Police: Accused drug dealer arrested

PATERSON – A suspected city drug dealer was arrested on murder charges Friday for allegedly shooting a Sussex County man in the 4th Ward on March 4, police said.

The victim, Justin Pease of Stanhope, managed to drive several blocks from the scene of the shooting before his Jeep crashed into a utility pole, police said. Investigators initially did not realize Pease was fatally shot when he was found dead in the vehicle and thought he may have suffered a drug over-

dose. But the case became a homicide investigation after the bullet wound was detected.

The suspect, 22-year-old Davine Campbell, allegedly shot Pease in the area of Hamilton and Madison Avenues during the early afternoon, police said. Campbell was arrested at his home near that same corner at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, according to Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez. He is being held at the Passaic County Jail on $2.5-million bail, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

he widow of the late reggae singer, Bunny Rugs has issued a statement warning the members of the Third World Band of her intentions to take legal action against them for failure to pay over moneys owed to the late singer.

According to Bouvier Clark, the widow of the former lead vocalist of the internationally acclaimed band, she has been ignored and disrespected by the remaining members of Third World.

In a news release, Clark revealed that as of July 2014, she was appointed as the personal representative of the estate of William Clark a.k.a. "Bunny Rugs" by order of the District Court of Osceola County in the State of Florida. Clark says gives her the right to demand, sue for, recover and receive all property belonging to William "Bunny Rugs" Clark.

Former Paterson official sues school district over claim of promised job

PATERSON: ormer Paterson public safety director Glenn Brown has filed a lawsuit against the school district, faulting it for breach of contract for not following through on agreements to hire him for two different six-figure jobs more than a year ago.

Brown’s lawsuit also accuses schools superintendent Donnie W. Evans of discrimination, claiming the woman the district appointed to a position similar to the one he was seeking is not a minority and is less qualified than he is. Both Brown and Evans are African-Americans.

Brown’s proposed appointment in September 2014 as the district’s $114,000 transportation director drew criticism from some Paterson education advocates who cited his lack of credentials for that position. Months later, the district created a new job at the same

Free Tax Return Filing Assistance In Brooklyn

BROOKLYN: ew York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYSDTF) Commissioner Jerry Boone and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams recently announced the availability of five free federal and state tax e-filing assistance sites throughout Brooklyn for residents who earn less than $62,000.

At each of the sites, including four local branches of the Brooklyn Public Library, taxpayers will be able to complete their tax returns with a user-friendly computer program that dramatically reduces errors and finds all available tax credits; volunteers from NYSDTF will be available to answer questions and provide assistance with the computer program. A majority of New York State taxpayers have not yet filed returns for 2015; the deadline arrives on Friday, April 15th.

“Thanks to this initiative, many taxpayers throughout Brooklyn may e-file their personal income tax return in a safe, secure, and confidential environment,” said NYSDTF Commissioner Boone. “This is a great option that can save filers hundreds of dollars that they might otherwise spend on a paid preparer or tax software. While they’re saving money, they’ll also learn about valuable tax credits and receive the refund they’ve earned.”

“Tax season can be challenging for those who lack the financial means to acquire the assistance of an expert who knows all of the relevant credits and deductions, which is why initiatives like these that educate and empower thousands of Brooklynites are so valuable,” said Borough President Adams. “I am pleased to partner with colleagues on the city, state, and federal level, to put hard-earned dollars back into homes across Brooklyn, benefitting hard-working families that are the foundation of our borough.”
