TOWARDS BIOHYBRID DESIGN

ON HEALTH + ARCHITECTURE The well-being of local populations is directly and indirectly influenced by both the built environment – encompassing residences, schools, urgent health facilities, and transportation – and the natural environment, including community gardens, waterfronts, and parks.

These surroundings play a pivotal role in shaping our exposure to pollution, impacting health-related behaviors, and ultimately influencing the risk of diseases.

Health outcomes with significant implications for morbidity and mortality, both in the US and globally, can be influenced by the interplay of the built and natural environment. How can urban planning, informed by climate change risk factors such as urban heat island effect, distribute healthy spaces around Bronzeville?

In 1995, before our awareness of climate change had grown to its centrality in architectural discourse, Chicago suffered from the deadliest heat wave in history, and deadliest climate disaster in U.S. history. 739 victims succumbed to unbearable heat and humidity. Attributed to lack of proper ventilation, nonexistent tree canopies - data shows that most victims were elderly and poor.

In the age of anthropocene, the relationship between the scientific technics of architecture, the scale of the human body, and environment are more intertwined than ever - our recent history during Covid has proven such.

Additionally, the enduring decisions made in designing these environments can disproportionately affect the health of individuals across diverse ages, abilities, races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. Bronzeville has historically been the site of synthesis between health and communities. Established in 1881, Michael Reese Hospital (known for Walter Gropius’ designed Singer Pavilion) was a prominent research and teaching hospital, also serving as one of the oldest and largest of Chicago’s hospitals. How can the architecture of health extend beyond a hospital’s campus and into the neighborhood?

ON ARCHITECTURE + HEALTH

This course delves into the complex relationships between humans, pathogens, structures, landscapes, and governing policies, with a specific focus on health considerations.

By using Bronzeville as a case study, students will explore the territory around the Chicago White-Sox Park, such as examining renowned hospital designs in Chicago, analyzing healing landscapes by practitioners such as Felipe Correa, evaluating hospitals that merge natural healing with advanced technology, or envisioning future hospitals as choreographed spaces of automated machinery.

Through extensive research and lectures, participants will delve into (1) architectural design mechanisms that enhance indoor air quality, decrease exposure to harmful substances, optimize visual and thermal comfort, and curtail the transmission of infectious diseases, (2) the impact of landscape architecture on community wellbeing and urban design strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and (3) the exploration of governance policies enacted in Chicago both during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

MODELOF TEACHING HOSPITALS The goal of this reaserch is to study the benefits of educational medical centers and associated hospitals.

Teaching hospitals can develop new ways to care for patients through research and the development of new technologies. They can also provide unique care that isn’t available anywhere else in the region. A teaching hospital, or academic medical center, is a hospital that partners with medical and nursing schools, education programs and research centers to improve health care through learning and research. By being at the forefront of medical education and research innovations, teaching hospitals tend to provide many advantages, including improving health care, specialized treatment, better outcome and survival as well as opportunities for mure students to get involved practicaly and share/increased the knowledge about their desired path. The case studies illustrates the analysis of zoning, spatial connections and circulations for better working understanding of health systems and centres.

Cube of school building height is 120 ft from the ground.200ft x 200ft.Reserch labs (12 story)are connected to this school building through bridge. labs specializations are divided in to cubes with 5 floors. size of the whole floor is 200ft x 200ft with 250 ft height.Hospital tower contains various specialized hospitals such as children, cancer hospital etc with the 12 story building. All 3 towers are connectes horizonatly and working in a decipline with the education and commercial. The design allow the patients to enter seperately without disturing the labs and teaching schools. Labs are helping the hospitals to improve their practice as well as benificiary for the students as well to see the practice in reality.Basic amenities are located on the base floors to use by all 3 buildings. such as libraries and auditoriums and cafes. Roof tops have been used for the organic plantation. They are growing their own plants for the hospital patients for their health. Rather than eating processed food.

Stony Brook Heights, a new rooftop gardening program started by students and staff located on top of the Health Sciences Center (HSC), to date, has grown hundreds of pounds of produce, all of which is provided to Stony Brook Hospital patients. As part of the Food Day celebration, Stony Brook Heights will be holding a free movie screening of “Fresh” in SAC Ballroom A at 8pm on October 24. As of 2021, the hospital had a total of 415 licensed beds: 206 medical/surgical beds, 48 adult intensive care beds, 57 pediatric beds, 50 pediatric and neonatal intensive care beds, 34 post-partum beds, 20 adult psychiatric beds, and 24 infant bassinets. It is an integrated part of the Tufts Medical network of hospitals which includes Lawrence General Hospital and Lowell General Hospital and MelroseWakefield Hospital through Tufts Medicine, an integrated system of hospitals, home health services, and physician networks.
