Hello

and welcome to As we head into Autumn, we enter the show season – which kicked off for us with our Glamping Show in Stoneleigh. Now in its fourth year, the show attracted a wider demographic of visitor this year, with holiday parks finding a base on the large BH&HPA stand. I was drafted in to host a panel session with Huw Pendleton of Celtic Holiday Parks and Bob Hill of the Camping and Caravanning Club, as well as Ted Howard-Jones who runs a small caravan site; Cholsey Grange. We discussed the benefits that glamping has brought to their businesses, the relative ease of getting started and how glamping can fit into the wider mix of traditional

Management accommodation. Needless to say, most of the questions centred around ‘planning’ which is always the topic uppermost on the minds of those starting out on this type of project! We are now looking forward to Saltex and the Holiday Park Innovation shows, where this magazine will be represented and where we will also have a stand. We hope to see you on our travels.

parkNews Following a record year for visitors, Silverdale Holiday Park says it's now putting staff recruitment plans into overdrive in readiness for an even more full-on 2019. And to help attract new team members, the business is offering a list of perks including free saunas, spa baths and pool sessions, plus access to the latest keep-fit technology in its gym. The family-owned park currently has 20 full-time positions to fill after end-season figures showed this summer to have been the busiest by far in its 60-year history. But business owner Michael Holgate says they are keen to give priority to applicants from south Cumbria, and will only be announcing the posts locally and on his website. At present, he states, around 95% of the 160-strong workforce have been drawn from the immediate area – and that in his experience, recruiting locally works best for everyone. In order to help woo applicants, the park is offering free membership of its exclusive leisure club which includes a 17m swimming pool, sauna, steam rooms and a spa pool. Staff will also be given use of the park's gymnasium, re-fitted this year with the latest exercise technology to help everyone keep in tiptop condition. But Michael Holgate believes local people will benefit most from the career opportunities: "This fabulous summer has been a real boon for tourism in Cumbria, and our county's visitor and hospitality industry has never been in better shape," he said.

Cumbria park woos new staff with fitness and sauna sessions "We offer training opportunities to all staff to equip them for progressing in this sector, and we also have a policy of promoting from within our ranks whenever possible. "In addition, recruiting from the local area gives many younger people a reason not to move away from Cumbria to seek long-term careers, and helps keep communities together. "We need to recruit now in order to get everyone ready for next year which, with repeat visits and recommendations, is likely to be even busier than this," added Michael. Silverdale is the flagship park of the Holgates group and was founded by Michael's grandfather in 1956, and has since grown to six multi-award winning park businesses. The new job opportunities are available both across the parks, and at The Royal gastro-pub in the village of Silverdale which was bought by Holgates almost three years ago. Positions include roles in operations such as food and beverage, housekeeping, customer services, technical support and groundwork. There is more information about the parks and details of current vacancies on their website.

Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry A special-needs school in the East Riding of Yorkshire is able to support its students equipping them with skills for life after the donation of a caravan to the school by Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry. Cambridge Park Academy in Grimsby was delighted to take receipt of a pre-owned Swift Challenger Caravan from Yorkshire Caravans in Bawtry to help its 6th form special-needs students just days after making a speculative phone call to the hugely popular Yorkshire based, family-owned caravan company. “We are absolutely overjoyed and this is truly special for the students at our school and will make a significant difference to the types of studies we can provide and the skills they can learn to support them in their everyday independent lives,” said Claire Abel of Cambridge Park Academy. “We are most appreciative to the Yorkshire Caravan team and look forward to sharing our progress with them as the caravan begins to take shape.” The students, whose studies encompass furniture restorations,

catering, hair, beauty and life skills will convert the caravan into a student shop. Andrew Whittaker, Managing Director, Yorkshire Caravans of Bawtry commented; “We happened to have this caravan in store that needed a little bit of ‘TLC’ and it suited the needs of the students perfectly supporting their project. We hope it gives them many hours of enjoyment and we look forward to seeing the restoration while it is underway and once it is completed.”

parkNews Parkdean Resorts Bolsters Contact Centre Team Holiday park operator Parkdean Resorts has strengthened its operations making a number of key appointments to its contact centre team, creating long-term local jobs and internal promotion opportunities. Based in Gosforth, the busy contact centre handles over a million contacts a year from holidaymakers and holiday home owners across multiple channels including calls, live chat, email and social media. As head of contact centre and operations she will support contact centre and customer service director Chloe Squires and the 150-strong team. As well as welcoming hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers to its parks each year, holiday home owners enjoy frequent breaks at 66 locations. Leading the team maintaining relations with the company’s community of owners, Iain Craig

has been appointed as owner support centre manager. Filling a newly-created role as group travel becomes more of a focus area for the business, groups and partnerships manager Matt Kershaw will build upon existing and new relationships with group travel operators. Aside from directly communicating with customers, the team also supports relations across the company’s holiday parks seven days a week year-round. Chloe Squires, contact centre and customer service director at Parkdean Resorts said: “The contact centre has grown rapidly to meet demand, ensuring our customers and people are always at the heart of everything we do. These latest appointments have strengthened the infrastructure of the team and our operations which will help us evolve as a centre even further. Our team of professionals deliver great conversations and customer service, helping

holidaymakers and owners to fully maximise their time spent at our parks, creating amazing memories. “We strongly champion internal development and progression of our people, and have various roles currently available. Some of my senior team joined the company as advisors and have risen through the ranks, while others have gone on to take a different pathway and flourished in other areas within the business such as marketing, park operations, HR and IT. “Anyone who has a real passion for customer service, sales or working within the travel industry, we want to hear from you.”

Salop Leisure targets further improvement after Swift dealership award Shropshire-based Salop Leisure has pledged to continue improving customer service standards after being voted the 'Large Touring Caravan Dealership of the Year’ by the Swift Group. The company, which has sales centres in Shrewsbury, Machynlleth and Stourport-on-Severn, collected the award last week but has no plans to rest on its laurels. Marking the end of the second year of Swift’s Approved Dealer Programme, launched in September 2017, the annual awards recognise the accomplishments delivered by dealers. The programme is built around eight customer-centric key performance indicators which are monitored throughout the year. “We are delighted to win this award which is a great accolade to everyone employed in the business and recognises all the hard work, training and investment put into the company,” said Mark Bebb, Salop Leisure’s managing director. ”We feel we still have a long way to go to arrive at a point where we need to be. We must demand better service standards from our

supply chain and continue to invest in servicing the needs of our customers at times that suit them.” The award comes as Salop Leisure invests in its after sales department, with former Mercedes dealership principal Dave Buxton joining to help lead customer service improvement. “We feel a need for continued investment in the department to underpin the traditional values of the company,” added Mr Bebb. “We are the only dealership in the country that is open seven days a week with service and reception teams.” He said the company employs more than 20 staff in the service department, five of whom work at weekends when it’s more convenient for customers to have their caravans serviced or repaired.

parkNews A Swift Whistler Lodge.

Callander Woods Holiday Park's Substantial Investment Project Summer has seen the launch of a substantial investment project at Callander Woods Holiday Park in Perthshire following its acquisition earlier this year by Wood Leisure. The family-owned parks group – founded nearly 40 years ago – has already introduced new luxury holiday homes and camping pods, and secured a fivestar quality grading from VisitScotland.

More homeowners using equity release to buy luxury lodges A growing number of customers are taking advantage of equity release schemes to help them purchase a luxury lodge holiday home, reports a Shropshire and Mid Wales caravan dealership.

Callander Woods, set at the eastern gateway to the Trossachs National Park, will also be adding ten extra weeks to the holiday year from 2019 by remaining open until the end of December.

Salop Leisure, which has sales centres in Shrewsbury, Machynlleth and Stourport-on-Severn, say many homeowners are deciding to unlock some of the wealth they have built up in their home to invest in a luxury lodge or caravan holiday home at a park of their choice.

The upgrade plan has so far seen a fleet of new top-end caravan holiday homes take the place of the park's previous stock, providing a luxury living experience for rental guests.

This method of buying a holiday home is becoming increasingly popular with retired people who are looking for all the financial options available to them.

To meet the ever-rising demand for glamping in Scotland, new high specification camping pods have also been installed at Callander Woods, sleeping up to six people.

The decision to release some of the value of their current home tax-free, while retaining full ownership of their property, is often taken by couples in consultation with their extended family who will also potentially benefit from the holiday home.

Fully insulated, the pods include all home-from-home comforts and mirror the high standards with which all of Wood Leisure's six holiday parks are associated. Now Callander Woods is set to benefit from even further investment according to the group's operations manager Bruce Thomson: "This is a very exciting time for the park, and we will soon be creating ten new fully serviced pitches with new state-of-the-art touring bollards," he said. "In addition, we will be increasing the number of hard standing pitches available for use by touring caravans and motorhomes throughout the winter months. "We are anticipating that these will be especially popular during the ten extra weeks the park will be open each year, and which reflect the growing popularity of four-season holidays," added Bruce. The park, he said, provides a wealth of nearby leisure opportunities which can be enjoyed by guests throughout the year. Callander Woods is located in the popular tourist town of Callander on the Rob Roy Way, close to the Birds of Prey Trail and the famous Bracklinn Falls and stunning Loch Katrine. There is more information about the Wood family's parks at www.woodleisure.co.uk

Many people who already own or are looking to purchase a luxury lodge or caravan holiday home are often of retirement age. Those who previously couldn’t afford to purchase the caravan of their dreams are discovering that equity release gives them another financial option. Apart from releasing enough money to buy their dream holiday home, homeowners can also bank an additional amount to cover future site fees. In response to the growing trend, Salop Leisure has expanded its holiday home village display at the company’s Shrewsbury headquarters to give customers a great choice. Salop Leisure’s managing director Mark Bebb said: “We have noticed a growing trend of people releasing equity in their homes to buy luxury lodges and caravan holiday homes. “Combined with our fantastic summer weather and public concern about foreign travel and passport delays post-Brexit, we are expecting even more people to take advantage of this option to buy luxury lodges and caravan holiday homes in the future.” The company now offers models from Willerby, Atlas, ABI and Swift.

parkNews BBC gives low-down on Dorset park's grown up holidays Vicki told the audience of BBC Radio Solent's popular morning show, which came live from the park, that grown-up holidays had a special appeal to certain sectors. A popular New Forest touring park which has declared itself a childfree zone was the focus of a recent BBC radio feature on the rising phenomenon of adults-only holidays.

They included teachers and child care professionals who liked not to be reminded of their jobs when they go away, and to young professionals and older couples.

Reporters travelled to Back of Beyond park near Ringwood for the hour-long look at why growing numbers prefer their escapes free from the patter of tiny feet.

The BBC reporter also talked with guests staying at Back of Beyond, all of whom declared that they certainly didn't dislike children in any way.

Helping to explain the trend were Martin and Vicki Bowrey who acquired Back of Beyond almost five years ago, and immediately placed an 18-plus age requirement on guests.

But as one elderly couple with grandchildren explained, it was so much easier to relax without excited yelps or boisterous games resounding around the park.

The husband and wife team said that customer reaction had been "one hundred percent positive" from the outset, and that they often had to hang the no-vacancies sign up this summer.

Covering 40 acres of quiet Dorset countryside, over half of which is woodland, Back of Beyond provides pitches for camping, touring caravans and motorhomes.

Beverley Holidays In Business Award Finals Devon's Beverley Holidays was celebrated as one of Britain's most outstanding family businesses this summer at London's Wembley Stadium. The Paignton park was among those selected to tread the red carpet at the 2018 National Family Business Awards after winning through to the glittering finals.

Bake Off star Candice Brown, awards host, with Beverley's Claire Flower

Founded 60 years ago by the same family which remains at its helm today, Beverley was the sole representative of the UK holiday parks industry at the prestigious event. Organised by Britain's largest network of family-run companies, the annual awards are designed to highlight the important roles played by family-run businesses. Beverley Holidays, which employs around 180 team members in high season, was among those taking a bow at Wembley for supporting local economies and creating jobs. Joining the VIP guest list was Beverley Holidays director Claire Flower whose grandparents, Stanley and Marion Jeavons, first set the business in motion in 1958. The park's location alongside some of Devon's finest beaches, and its reputation for a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, soon won it a large following. Now under the ownership of the family's third generation, it today provides a raft of staying options including boutique holiday caravans, sea-view lodges, camping, and touring facilities.

Warren Farm Holiday Centre in Brean now offers En-Suite Pitches, each with their own private toilet and shower facilities. Mike Harris, Director at Warren Farm Holiday Centre, said: “We’re pleased to announce that our En-Suite Super Pitches are now complete. “These pitches are suitable for touring caravans, motorhomes or tents. Each pitch has its own ‘pod’ consisting of a toilet, shower and storage area. It is the perfect solution for those wanting a more luxury caravanning or camping experience, without the need to use our communal toilet blocks.” These spacious pitches include a tarmac area for the caravan, motorhome and/or car, plus all-weather rubber matting for a tent or awning. The ‘Super Pitch’ features include a fresh water tap, waste water drain, storm drain and car parking space. Warren Farm offers a range of pitch types, including grass, hardstanding and new En-Suite Super Pitches. Warren Farm Holiday Centre is a family-run business, which has been in the Harris family for five generations. It was awarded ‘Holiday Park Of The Year’ at the Bristol, Bath & Somerset Tourism Awards 2017/18.

Landscaping News Andy Maxfield sets new world record Prison officer Andy Maxfield’s amazing journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End on an unmodified lawn tractor has been officially recognised as a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® achievement. The 874-mile record attempt in July 2017 took Andy 5 days, 8 hours and 36 minutes, making it the fastest time for the journey on a ride-on lawnmower. Andy embarked on the challenge to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s Society after his father was diagnosed with the disease.

Andy’s initial goal was to raise a modest £1000 for Alzheimer’s Society through the lawnmower challenge in July last year, followed by a charity ball in December. “So far we’ve collected over £9000 and now I’m trying to reach our new target of £10,000 by the end of 2018,” said Andy. “We’re keeping the JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/andrew-maxfield open until then. Donations can also be made by texting MAXF80 £3 to 70070. “I’m very proud my record attempt was successful but I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of my family and support team, and having a great lawn tractor certainly helped.” To supply proof for the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt, the lawnmower was

fitted with a tracking system routinely used by much larger agricultural machinery for guidance and monitoring. John Deere’s Operations Centre was able to track Andy’s entire journey via JDLink software. The resulting data was the proof needed to verify Andy’s route and travelling time as a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS success. Sadly, Andy’s father, the inspiration behind the John O’Groats to Land’s End challenge, lost his own battle with dementia in January 2018, unaware that his son’s magnificent achievement was indeed a record. Alzheimer’s Society is available for anyone affected by dementia and there are lots of ways the charity can help – for details call the National Dementia Helpline on 0300 222 1122 or visit www.alzheimers.org.uk.

Kubota UK and Partingtons Holiday Parks make the perfect pair With over 2,000 pitches for touring, holiday and residential mobile homes spread across seven different sites throughout the UK, Partingtons Holiday Parks is a nationwide leisure company that has firmly established itself as a popular household name. Celebrating its 75th anniversary next year, the successful business is overseen by the 4th generation of the Partington family. Robert Partington Kearsley and his sister Andrea Challis run the business and employ over 250 individuals as part of their ‘family first’ approach. With six Visit England accredited holiday sites and one residential site in the Partingtons portfolio, it’s imperative that each park is kept in the best condition possible to ensure visitors continue to return year after year. This is a challenge Robert and Andrea’s grounds maintenance teams face on a daily basis and easily achieve through their longstanding

relationship with high quality suppliers, working closely with Kubota and local dealer Dennis Barnfield over the last 15 years. Currently boasting a 25 strong Kubota fleet, maintenance of the various sites is headed up by each individual park manager and their dedicated grounds maintenance teams. Speaking of the partnership, Robert said: “With seven different parks to contend with, it’s vital that our grounds maintenance is consistent across the board to ensure we achieve the highest standard at every park. The service we receive from Dennis Barnfield and the varying models of quality Kubota machinery they provide, ensures each of the sites are kept in premium condition.” From transporting seven tonne caravans across the park to mowing and mulching of the lawns, Kubota machinery plays an essential role in the running of the sites. The parks have been home to a multitude of machines over the years, with its current fleet including a number of G Series high dump mowers and F Series ride on mowers for regular grass cutting. For the more heavy duty site work, two L Series compact utility tractors, four larger scale M6040 tractors and two L3200 tractors are used to help the maintenance teams move

the holiday homes and complete essential upkeep. With such substantial loads to transport across the parks, the high performance tractors are the perfect solution for the task, safely and carefully helping the team to transport the caravans around the site. The sites are also home to five recently acquired RTV-X1140’s. Robert continued: “We recently purchased the new RTVs because the option to have an additional two seats in the back or a larger cargo bed is useful for the team when transporting equipment around the vast sites. The RTV-X900 we previously purchased was so robust and resilient that I knew we needed more Kubota RTVs to help the maintenance team complete their tasks easier and quicker. “Past generations of the Partingtons has used Kubota machinery for decades based on the quality and reliability of the brand, as well as its first class aftersales services. Our confidence in the performance of the machines means that Andrea and I have one less thing to worry about as we know the maintenance of the sites will continue to run like clockwork.” For more information on Kubota and its range of solutions for the groundcare sector, visit www.kubota.co.uk.

Environmental News Lakeland park welcomes iconic squirrel Wildlife-friendly Silverdale Holiday Park in Cumbria has provided a local hospice with a £2,250 windfall – by offering a new home to a giant red squirrel.

the UK. But when the online hammer finally fell in mid-August, there were celebrations when the winner was revealed as local parks group chief Michael Holgate.

Named Mawson, the ten-foot tall timbercarved squirrel was for many years a familiar feature at the entrance to a plush Windermere hotel, the Langdale Chase. In spring 2017, however, the hotel's owner Thomas Noblett sold the business – and its new owners served Mawson with his marching orders.

And thanks to Michael, Mawson will now remain in his native Cumbria and enjoy a sea view from the entrance to Silverdale Holiday Park near Arnside. "It's a great result because our park has long had a red squirrel as its logo, and works closely with local nature groups to protect the colonies which thrive here," said Michael. "Many people expressed their dismay when Mawson disappeared from the hotel entrance as he had become something of a Lake District landmark."

Thomas offered to take custody of the landmark sculpture, and had the idea of using Mawson to help raise much-needed funds for St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston. So he entered Mawson into an online auction which sparked fierce bidding from across

"But now his future in Cumbria is assured, and he will still be on view to the public

Wildlife Adventure Park's Discovery Day

Children went wild at a Lancaster holiday park this August when they tackled a series of challenges to help heighten their awareness of the natural world. It all took place during a wildlife discovery day at Moss Wood in Cockerham which was attended by a line-up of Lancashire-based charities and organisations. Aimed at both youngsters and grown-ups, activities included supervised pond dipping sessions, and the chance for children to build their own bee and bug hotels. Bodies such as the RSPB and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust explained to guests how they can identify and help protect the county's native animals, birds and plant-life. Hungry visitors also enjoyed tasting locally-produced foods from exhibitors, including goats-meat burgers from Cockerham Boers, and honey from hives tended by Lancaster Beekeepers. The beekeeping organisation also helps maintain three traditional timber hives on the park which, in the summer months, are home to more than 100,000 honey bees.

from the road. Best of all, Mawson has allowed us to donate a substantial sum to a very worthwhile cause as he takes up his new role as Silverdale Holiday Park's mascot," added Michael.

Parks Praised As Wildlife See Their Hedge Fund Flourish More than 300 holiday parks which took part in an ambitious hedgerow conservation project have been praised for creating and managing a wealth of new wildlife habitats. With the year-long project now complete, an audit has revealed that just over 360 miles of hedges are now flourishing on parks taking part in the David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme. The figure is based on feedback provided from parks by the scheme's wildlife assessors, and represents a length of greenery stretching from London to Edinburgh. Professor Bellamy's green awards are given annually to parks making exceptional efforts to protect the natural world – and each year, an extra challenge is thrown down. Honey bee conservation has already featured, and was followed in 2017 by the call for parks to plant new hedging and ensure that existing hedges are wildlife friendly. Rufus Bellamy said he was "genuinely taken by surprise" at the scale of what the assessors found on the 300-plus parks which pledged to take part in the project.

a d v e r t o r i a l

In January 2018, Crown and Canopy were approached by The National Trust to create a glamping manual or guide book to help inform their farm and estate managers on how to go about setting up glamping retreats across the UK. This document would introduce them to the world of glamping and guide them through setting up high-end retreats from conception to completion. The book would also include a business modelling section, setting out average nightly rates, investment costs, ongoing maintenance costs and estimated yearly net profits from each style of retreat based on various occupancy rates from bell tents to tree houses. This information could then be used to create cash flow forecasts and projected returns for business plans, planning and grant applications. We have provided consultancy to many farms and estates across the country for a number of years now and the first initial visits are all about establishing the viability, unique selling points and how suitable the land is for the business, so we began to write the document in the same format. After months of work transferring this information and process on to paper as well as substantial market research we have finally pieced this 50-page business document together. We set out exactly what we are really looking for in a piece of land in the appraisal section and then moved into the philosophy and design of a site. This step by step guide then takes the reader through the entire journey and all the variables to consider, from services and infrastructure to interior design, safety and day to day running. Whilst writing the document we soon realised that the information it contained would be very valuable to many people across the UK setting out on their own ventures, so we decided to create a public version with added marketing and management sections based on our own industry experience of the last 7 years. We are officially launching the manual at the glamping show this year, However, advanced copies are available on our website crownandcanopy.co.uk

Makes a Splash Hoburne is one of the Uk’s oldest and longest-established holiday park companies, having opened its first park in 1912. this year, the park has made a massive investment in its facilities. our park review editor Zoe Holland of jugglingonrollerskates.com went to investigate Over the past century the company has made it one of their key goals to reinvest and continually improve their facilities and accommodation, keeping up with changes in trends and customer expectations. 2018 welcomes the completion of the latest phase of Hoburne’s £8.5 million investment programme which was finished in time for this year’s Summer season. As a result the parks are able to showcase an impressive range of improvements in their entertainment complexes, a wide expansion in their range of luxury accommodation including hot tub facilities and the introduction of brand new facilities such as their beauty treatment rooms and woodland education centre at Bashley. I visited Hoburne at their Bashley site on the outskirts of the New Forest with my children at the start of the Summer holidays to experience the recent investment first hand. We were not only impressed by the standard of the facilities but also the cleanliness, customer service and quality of entertainment enjoying a fantastic family holiday from start to finish.

During our visit we stayed in a Platinum Plus 2 berth static caravan. The caravan was clean, well presented and well maintained. We particularly liked the gated decking area as an additional outside space where we dined every evening. Other accommodation highlights to mention include linen and towels being provided, plenty of storage in both living areas and bedrooms and a thoughtful little essentials box full of everything you might need for washing up and emergency cups of tea!

As a family with children aged from toddler to teen I was really happy to find a wide range of facilities and activities that appeal to all ages on site. The swimming pools were a hit all round. The heated outdoor pool was a particular favourite (and when I say heated...it was like a bath!) where hours were spent splashing, diving and floating about. The toddler paddle pool is great for

Hoburne has seven holiday parks across the South and South West of England. As part of their recent investment they have expanded the range of properties available to buy as holiday homes on their Hampshire and Gloucestershire sites. The new properties offer luxury caravans and lodges while allowing owners to benefit from the range of improvements in the on site facilities. Having explored the Aspen development on the Bashley site I can certainly see the appeal. The properties are not only smart and stylish in themselves but are set on a spacious site on the outskirts of the New Forest with wildlife and scenic views on their doorstep.

little ones to explore while the adults can relax on nearby sun-loungers. Indoors we found yet another large pool with another shallow paddle pool and larger pool for swimming. There’s also a great splash play area for younger children with sprinklers and water play features. The Woodland Centre was opened earlier this year allowing children aged 3 and up to take part in a range of activities from interactive workshops, bush craft skills and and outdoor arts and crafts. We enjoyed a session in the ancient woodland where our guide, Sally helped us embrace our senses and introduced us to the local wildlife... including some stunning Roe Deer! The Woodland Centre also lends itself as an excellent learning resource for the local community inviting schools and local children to use the facilities which work closely with key organisations such as the New Forest National Park Authority.

The choice of activities goes on in the form of an indoor soft play for toddlers, two outdoor play areas (one for under 5’s and one for older children), a brand new Adventure Golf course and nightly entertainment in the form of kids party games and disco. It’s also worth mentioning that all the staff involved in the children’s entertainment were enthusiastic, professional and polite adding a real sense of magic for the children. Of course it’s important to make time for yourself as well as everyone else on a family holiday so I was more than happy to try out Bashley’s very own beauty treatment facility, Beauty H day spa. The spa offers guests a variety of treatments including body massages, facials, manicures or a hot stone massage right in the heart of the Bashley site. Stepping into the salon from the hive of activity outside was like entering an oasis of relaxation. I did indeed relax. Soothing

rainforest sounds, a cool breeze and soft furnishings meant that the stresses of parenting were forgotten and I was able to indulge in ‘me’ for a while. Again I found the staff to be friendly and professional and walked out feeling pampered and recharged. Our experience of Hoburne has been a positive one. The recent investment means that despite being well established on the UK holiday market Hoburne has been able keep up with competitors in terms of high end accommodation and up to date facilities. The addition of the beauty spa and woodland centre offers guests additional unique experiences beyond those of a traditional holiday park consequently appealing to a broader guest market. Most importantly Hoburne offers a fun packed, laid back and friendly destination where families are able to enjoy affordable breaks while benefiting from some incredible facilities.

Tyram LakES

sets new standards on land and water one of the most ambitious and spectacular holiday resort projects that we have ever seen. tyram lakes is the first in the Uk to be given planning permission to build on water, in the form of floating timber eco lodges. Once completed, Tyram Lakes will consist of a hotel, spa and resort, with 325 luxurious wooden Eco Lodges set in and around 65 acres of lakes and over 100 acres of woodland. Of these, 125 will be riverside floating lodges and the other 200 will consist of woodland retreat lodges. The lakeside lodges will vary in size, from two to three bedrooms and the woodland lodges will range from two to four bedrooms. At the heart of the site, a boutique hotel with spa facilities will offer a range of first class experiences and services to customers. Holiday Parks Management asked Alexander Pearce, Head of the Tyram Lakes Development, whether he acquired the land specifically for a luxury resort, “No not at all – we purchased the land more than 20 years ago and initially the lakes were used for jetskis and fishing, and later opened it up to touring caravans,” he said.

00 22

www. holidayparksmanagement.com www. holidayparksManageMent.coM

When also talking about what inspired him to start the project, he commented, “We often had as many as 150 caravans around the lake – lovely people but it was messy – it was a bit of a help-yourself site and I wanted something that was tasteful, peaceful and showed respect for the surroundings.” Development for the site is underway, if still in its early phases. The development process has been split into 4 phases. Phase 1 will see the construction of the first 50 lakeside and floating lodges, phase 2 will involve building the 104-bedroom hotel, spa and leisure centre, phase 3 will take care of the remaining 75 lakeside, floating lodges and phase 4 will centre around the 200 woodland retreat lodges. A great deal of progress has already been made at the site, largely consisting of drainage and infrastructure - areas vital to the overall construction. Tyram Lakes in conjunction with Rothgen Capital (who assist with marketing and capital raising for the project) have also enlisted the services of the Accounting Worx Group who have helped on investment product structuring. This has enabled investors to provide funding quickly and easily via bonds or larger private capital arrangements. The latest round of funding has already taken place with the Tyram Lakes 8% Asset-backed Bond, the capital raised being attributed to the development and construction of Phases 1 and 2. Tyram Lakes and in particularly the floating Eco Lodges, have been gathering a lot of

attention from the media, which has helped draw investors. Interestingly enough, the attention attracted from the Tyram Lakes development has not been solely from the Green and Eco sectors either. The globally renowned Armani fashion brand is on board, a first for UK holiday resorts, with a selection of the floating lodges being fitted with the Armani Roca range of bathroom and wellness solutions, with Armani Casa providing interior designs for the bedrooms. Natural England, who own a large park that sits adjacent to Tyram Lakes, have also given complimentary access to visitors of the resort. Another formidable partnership that has been struck is with Hoseasons - the UK’s leading holiday company. This has provided Tyram Lakes with projected rental incomes and occupancy levels to demonstrate the strength of the project; this being especially of interest to potential investors and financiers. The vision behind Tyram Lakes is to create a haven within natural surroundings that exhibits an eco-friendly and sustainable concept without compromising on luxury. It should come as no surprise therefore, that sustainability is a top priority. Various partnerships have been made to ensure that Tyram Lakes is as sustainable and luxurious as possible. The partnership between Tyram Lakes and the multi-award-winning Baca Architects has also been extremely advantageous. In discussing the business relationship, Alexander was full of praise for Baca and its expertise, “Baca

have been so helpful and have introduced me to so many experts in terms of energy conservation and eco-system protection – the site is being created in keeping with the natural environment even to what was there, prior to the original pits being formed. I was really inspired as well by the total energysaving property development with zero carbon and recognised that in so many ways this would be a first.” In addition, Geyser Thermal Energy (GTE) has designed the heating and hot water system for the resort. Their design uses the main lake as a source of heat for the lodges. Alongside this, integrated non-chemical water purification systems have been used for the filtration of grey and black water, which is then partially or completely purified before being recycled back into the lake. The design of these systems also ensures that running costs for the site remains low, with a very low impact on the local ecology. With the importance of utilising natural energy across the entire Tyram Lakes project, the ability to store, direct and deliver that energy is integral. Immersa, who are specialists in the capture of natural energy and its battery storage, were a perfect fit. Providing a battery system that allows storage of the energy generated by solar panels and other renewables before it is exported to the grid, Immersa ensures that energy can be integrated into smart power grids delivering sustainable and secure energy across the entirety of Tyram Lakes. While Tyram lakes will represent the cutting edge of sustainability, Alexander was adamant that it would not come at the cost of luxury. “I don’t know about you, but I like nice things. If I ever heard criticisms about eco-projects while on my travels it was that in order to protect the environment and enjoy the natural world, we have to go to absolute basics – you know get the sackcloth and ashes out, look serious, be deep-thinking and eat raw salads. I’ve got nothing against salads per se, but that whole

concept is not my idea of a great holiday - so I thought why can’t you do the same thing but do it in style without wrecking the planet? An exemplar model, energy efficient, eco-friendly with a 5 star atmosphere, Tyram has it all.” The floating lodges will undoubtedly be one of the star attractions of the resort and the other eco lodges will also be packed with technology to make them as sustainable as possible. The eco grooves on each lodge will be installed with solar PV panels allowing them to harness passive solar energy. They will have an effective independent energy source via solar water heating and energy. On top of this, each lodge will be integrated with the aforementioned water purification systems to allow them to partially or completely purify grey or black water and recycle it back into the lake. The lakes themselves will feature a number of Bio-Havens, floating Bio-Mimic islands, made from non-toxic post-consumer plastics and vegetated with native plants. These BioHavens, known as floating treatment wetlands, will act as additional filtration systems for the lake while also providing a haven for the local wildlife. When asked for the inspiration behind the floating lodges, Alexander also went on to explain, “I explored the lodge and cabin sector - travelling all over Europe seeing what made a good site, looking at environmentally friendly lodges, and slowly developed the vision of lodges around the lake. Back home, I soon discovered that land-based lodges could not work all around, as one area suffered from a very narrow shoreline. To remedy this, I

would have had to start reclaiming a large area of the lake which would have adversely affected the local eco-system. Back over to Holland I went and studied water-based properties and the concept of energy saving via Passivhaus and I loved it. I got together with Baca, the expert architects for waterbased property design and development, and the idea was born.” While talking about the innovative energy supply and distribution systems and reasons behind their implementation, Tyram's chief innovator concluded, “Much of the site has no mains water nor grid power supply – knowing how energy efficient the lodges should be, I made the natural progression and looked at areas where hot tubs were powered by geysers and also areas where storage batterybacked solar energy was utilised. I wanted to use the best expertise available – so I went as far afield as Iceland and on to remote islands in the Philippines – this is why we are using solar energy and battery backup units alongside getting hot water and heating from the lake, and reed bed purification systems. It’s perfectly logical and the first of its kind, so as a package, we can only look to ourselves.” We are sure that the rest of the world will be looking at Tyram Lakes as well as the development continues. The Petch family farm covers 1,000 acres of arable land in a glorious setting on the verge of the North Yorkshire Moors national park. After dipping their toe in the tourist pool several years ago, the enterprising farmers soon spotted the opportunities their location held as a to die-for visitor destination on a grander scale. “We had set up a glamping site,” recalls Alan Petch, “developing a bespoke wedding venue, complete with teepees and marquees. The venture proved so popular - we attract some 15 events annually - and we realised that up to 150 guests needed accommodation and that’s when we knew we wanted to enter the holiday lodge park market to cater for them on site.”

Family Create New Lodge Park from GLamPInG SITE farming entrepreneurs have created a wedding destination jewel in the heart of some of england’s most scenic countryside.

“The glamping trend may also prove shortlived,” adds Alan. “Another reason for diversifying into something more permanent.” So the idea was born and in keeping with the family philosophy of sourcing everything locally whenever possible, Alan and the team combed their area for suppliers. Their stance brings spin-off benefits for the Yorkshire economy of course, with locally sourced food and drink and other supplies. In early 2018, the £1.5m undertaking to convert once agricultural land to a holiday lodge and static caravan park began at the family’s Great Ayton farm. Alan was told early on by colleagues that, “you’ll never sink so much money into the ground than preparing for the development of a holiday lodge park”. The 48-year old entrepreneur took the advice to heart in searching out Guisborough-based CLS, who are currently celebrating 50 years specialising in groundworks and infrastructure developments. “They are experts in their field, are local and know their business inside out,” Alan adds. CLS carried out initial earthmoving then installed drainage and utilities ducting. They undertook major civil engineering, including installation of caravan and lodge foundations, access roads, footpaths, a bridge and soft landscaping. “We’ve enjoyed a really close working relationship with them,” says Alan. “They adapted to our needs and were flexible in redesigning elements of infrastructure as the project progressed. A family business like ourselves; the Millers work on the ground and are involved with every aspect of a project.”

“We’re doing everything ecologically,” states Alan, “And accommodating guests in beautiful countryside, with miles of woodland walks and opportunities to witness wildlife diversity up close. We even have two large attenuation ponds fringed with habitats for birds, amphibians and other aquatic species”. The whole operation is grounded in ecological sustainability. Yorkshire stone used throughout, planting 4,500 native trees, erecting bird and bat boxes across the site and sowing swathes of wildflower seeds to attract pollinators. “We run our own apiary too,” says Alan proudly. “Our ancient ash tree is home to barn owls and what better an experience for visitors than languishing in a hot tub below and watching them come and go.”

“We provide three, four or seven-day stays year-round,” Alan explains, “booked through Hoseasons. We’re going to budget at the moment but cashflow is key in this business,” he cautions. Alan’s wife Louise runs the G and T café and bistro, also clad in cedar, ably assisted by Edward, the couple’s six-year old. Alan’s sister Sandra is park manager, his mother looks after the site landscaping, while dad is the Jack of all trades, sourcing local food like Shepherd’s Purse cheese. Longer term, the Petch family’s five-year plan is to expand the country park, become energy self-sufficient, thanks to solar panelling. “We have planning permission for a further 35 acres,” Alan reports, “part of our mission to develop 54 lodges here.” www.cleveland-land-services.co.uk

Added to that are fellow raptors such as buzzards, kites and kestrels patrolling the skies above the park or nearby. It’s all about attention to detail, Alan stresses, as guest expectations run high, especially when they are staying in “God’s country”. All 17 of the prestige lodges built under phase one of Angrove Country Park are attractively clad in cedar and offer single, two and three-bed accommodation. Opened in May, the park is currently enjoying 95% occupancy.

Booking Systems Think Smart with SmartPark accept more direct bookings With CampManager you can accept direct bookings through your own website and enjoy many benefits...

A holiday booking and management system that does the hard work for you? That would be SmartPark! Tilly Hardick (Director of Hardwick Parks Ltd) shares her experiences of using SmartPark at Hardwick Parks in Oxfordshire:

Increase sales Simply put, if you don’t have online booking you will be losing customers. Customers expect to be able to easily check availability and pricing and to book immediately. Availability calendars help to convert those looking at your website into customers. Users can easily see what dates are available and when they can check in. A strong ‘Book Now’ call to action will capture potential guests while they are engaged with your website, encouraging them to book. With CampManager, bookings through your own website are commission free so all the revenue goes direct to you.

Maximise occupancy & revenue The seasonality of the holiday park industry means certain times of the year can be quiet for bookings. Entice potential customers to make a booking by offering a discount that will be automatically shown when customers check availability. A ‘Was and Now’ price will be clearly displayed along with the cost saving so customers can see what discount has been applied. You can also make it easy for customers to add holiday extras to their bookings, to help generate as much revenue as possible from each booking.

Save time and money On top of not having to answer telephone calls or respond to emails asking about availability and pricing, you will also save time by letting the system send instant booking confirmation emails. Pre-arrival and departures emails can also be automated, minimising your workload and reducing everyday admin. The system will automatically chase payments and enable customers to login to their online account to view their bookings and to pay outstanding balances.

“Since switching to SmartPark, our customers’ experience has improved drastically. By simplifying the online booking process to just three or four steps from the much longer process we had, we witness far fewer dropouts and dramatically increased online bookings. Communication with customers and private owners is simplified, as the system creates and emails confirmations and invoices automatically. We’ve had great feedback from private owners on how much easier the entire process of ground rent payments, winterisation etc. Is, with their own “customer area” allowing them to view, manage and settle their invoices, utility certification, insurance and meter readings online. Drag and drop scheduling means we can make changes to bookings without a lengthy process, plus it works with optimised occupancy helping us plan in backto-back bookings for better efficiency. Our staff love it! Previous systems used have been office based from that park – now our wardens and staff can manage many aspects from wherever they are – checking in late arrivals, answering queries, taking payments or making additions to bookings there and then on their mobile or the iPad, without being in the office. Paperwork has been significantly reduced. As a Manager, I can access reports and private owner information from wherever I am on my laptop or phone, which makes being between Parks much easier. The alerts is a great tool – a clear “to do list” helping everyone understand their daily tasks, from chasing up ground rents, to insurance, gas and electric certificate renewals. It also displays our daily arrivals, departures, linen lists, free pitches etc. with an easy one click update.

Build your customer database Online booking allows you to automatically capture the email addresses of your customers for future marketing purposes. The customer data will be stored in your account and can even be imported straight into your Mailchimp list. From MailChimp you can then send marketing emails and if a customer chooses to unsubscribe, their customer record within CampManager will be automatically updated. CampManager design online booking pages so they integrate seamlessly with your website branding for a sleek and professional look. The booking pages will be optimised for both mobile and tablet browsers, so your customers can book at any time, from any location. Learn more at www.campmanager.com

We can view and download reports – from daily tasks to financial performance – showing growth on last year or highlighting where we need to be proactive with offers during quieter periods, helping us plan ahead. Using SmartPark means we can manage our entire park from one simple system, whenever or wherever we like – even sending marketing or operational emails to customers or owners. We simply wouldn’t change it for anything!” www.smartparkbookings.co.uk

Reduce the risk of water damage caused by water leaks by nick smith, Head of optimisation services at inspired energy plc

in this article, i want to discuss how you can reduce the impact of water leaks for your holiday park or leisure resort. the early detection of water leaks is crucial in order to prevent the risk of water damage from flooding and minimise the costs associated with water wastage and loss of water pressure.

“By implementing an effective water management strategy you could reduce your water bill by as much as 30%.”

What are the common causes of water leaks for holiday parks? Water leaks can come from a variety of sources, and while not all of them may be applicable in every situation, we recommended that businesses should nonetheless have some form of water detection as part of their business continuity plan. Common water leaks experienced by the holiday industry include: I Misuse of water from holiday makers I Appliance faults I Freezing pipes I Leaking boilers I Corrosion of pipe network I Poor connection of joints and valves I Excess water pressure Additionally, if your business has on-site leisure facilities such as swimming pools, restaurants and entertainment centres, it can be even more difficult to detect and locate unusual water consumption.

The impact of water damage “Water damage is the second largest cause of property insurance claims.”

Leaks that go undetected can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage and add significant increases to your water bill, so taking a proactive approach to monitoring your water network can make a huge difference, particularly for those businesses on metered supply.

How to detect water leaks Finding the source of the leak depends largely on the type of leak you have. As piping is typically concealed behind walls or underground, it is recommended to consult the services of a qualified professional. Inspired Energy’s trusted leak detection service helps to identify any problems and repair leakages efficiently with minimal interruption to your business. “As an associate member of the British Holiday & Home Parks Association (BH&HPA), we understand that keeping utilities costs to a minimum is crucial for businesses operating in the leisure industry.” Our remote monitoring software can be installed at both meter and sub-meter level, allowing your water usage levels to be monitored on a day+1 basis across your estate. By setting usage benchmarks, we

can identify unusual patterns in your water consumption, ensuring that over consumption is identified at the earliest opportunity. If unusual patterns in your water consumption usage are identified, we will contact the affected site to check whether there are any obvious reasons for higher than expected consumption (i.e. a business process issue). If there is no known cause, one of our qualified Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) engineers can be called upon to assist. Our site team engineers carry a wide range of detection and tracing equipment and once the leakage has been pinpointed they can in most cases undertake the necessary repairs. Where repair work is more complex or time consuming, a repair programme will be arranged in line with your service agreement. Do you suspect you have a water leak at your holiday park or leisure resort? We deliver cost effective water leak detection and repair services for hundreds of holiday park sites across the UK, helping our customers improve their water efficiency and save money. Rex Dovey, of Universal Glamping Pods, said: “The variable weather we have had these last few days has suited us enormously. The high winds and rain, especially, on the first day showed just how strong our structures are and we were also able to showcase our new innovative heating system, which warmed up many visitors throughout the Show.” Much like the sector it represents, the Show is constantly evolving and welcomed thousands of visitors from all corners of the UK and overseas throughout the three days of the Show, who were greeted by more exhibitors than ever before. As suppliers recognise the value of the Glamping Show visitors had the opportunity to compare and contrast not only a huge variety of glamping

the exhibitors at the glamping show welcomed the inclement weather with gusto as it meant they could really showcase how well their structures stood up to britain’s variable climate and how warm and cosy their structures are even when the temperature drops.

structures but also similar suppliers for services and accessories including bedding products, heating and sanitary suppliers, insurance and planning advice to name a few. New to the Show this year, B&B Owner, Andrew, had this to say: “We are in the hospitality business and run a B&B but we are looking to develop this to a more selfcatering offering so we came to the Glamping show to look at the different structures and work out what would suit us but also look at the other areas such as sanitation, marketing and the technical side of things with what’s involved and how to go about installing the structures. The Show has ticked all the boxes for me.”

The knowledge bank also evolved this year as the education offered by the Show stepped up a gear with the introduction of a number of short intensive courses to provide visitors with a more in-depth knowledge of specific areas of running your own glamping site, which was in addition to the hugely popular comprehensive seminar programme and one to one ‘Meet the Experts’ meetings. Chris Pike of Hey Burt was one of the specialists available to speak to in ‘Meet the Experts’, who had this to say: “We were busy from the moment the doors opened on both Thursday and Friday. I talked to a massive range of people from those who have barely even thought about the beginning of their

potential glamping site to those who are well established business owners. It was great to see such a diverse range of visitors attending the Show.” Campsite owners, Simon & Lisa, have been coming to the Show for the last three years and said: “We are in the process of upgrading our campsite to a glamping site. We came specifically to speak to a planning expert and Barry Davies of Davies & Co was extremely helpful in assisting us to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. The Show is constantly evolving, and we find it really useful to come back each year to keep up with all the changes in structures, services and especially legislation to make sure we are offering our guests the best experience we can.”

Jess Holliday, of Yurts For Life, has seen a huge shift in the last three years in how knowledgeable visitors have become and had this to say: “What we have noticed is there has been an massive evolution in the glamping market in recent years and in the three years we have been exhibiting we have seen visitors in our first year who were just at the planning stages of their business and now those people are returning to the Show knowing exactly what they want and are more knowledgeable about the industry, which the Show has had a huge part in providing for them, giving them the education and knowledge to make an informed choice. It has been a phenomenal Show!”

After four successful years of the Glamping Show the organisers wanted to give something back. So, teaming up with Kerry Roy of Camp Kátur, they launched GlampAid, a new industry charity to help those made homeless by conflict and disaster, welcoming long-time supporter of the Glamping Show, TV presenter, author and upcycler, Max McMurdo, as its ambassador. Although the doors have closed on this year’s Show the organisers already have new and innovative ideas in the pipeline to enhance the Show in 2019. Make the Glamping Show a date in your diary for 2019 and join us from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 September 2019.

As both a nerve centre and weather vane, SPATEX, the UK’s only dedicated wet leisure Exhibition, plays a vital role in breathing new life into the industry and bringing people together. We’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating - where else in the UK can you meet over a thousand representatives of the industry under one roof? Answer – ONLY SPATEX! Show Organiser, Michele Bridle says: “The wet leisure Industry has backed us with heart and hard work to date and I am confident that together we will make the Show even bigger and better in 2019. With well over 80 per cent of space sold, we are in a very good place as we enter the last quarter.”

Why is SPATEX relevant to holiday parks? Wellness is big business and the addition of a good water leisure facility in a holiday park draws customers like nothing else and keeps them coming back for more. Witness the increase in popularity of hot tubs in holiday parks along with swimming pools. Such is the vibrancy and fast pace of the industry, each SPATEX brings something new. For example, more than ever before, the world’s leading manufacturers have put the launch of energy saving products top of their agendas for 2019 so expect a massive flurry of activity in this area. Nothing stands still and each Show has its own character. Aside from a raft of new products, SPATEX 2019 will also be welcoming a host of new exhibitors with companies such as HydroFlux Aqua Products, Princess Spas Ltd, Recotherm Ltd, Rockford, Spa Solutions and Sunbeach Spas all making their entrance. The floorplan has been restructured to provide more space and allow a greater number of larger stands for companies such as Fairlocks, Superior Spas, Aqua Warehouse and Certikin. Legionella: a GrEaTEr rISk afTEr

WarmEr WEaTHEr warm weather and hot summer holidays, quite naturally, see an increased use of many water applications. air conditioning units and associated cooling towers, for example, are in greater demand in the summer, swimming pools are visited more frequently, and hose pipes are pulled out of hibernation for a summer of use. While many have enjoyed the warmest summer for many years, duty holders and responsible persons must be aware of the heightened – and hidden – risk of Legionella in water sources and systems. To be able to flourish, Legionella needs a temperature range from 20-45°C – so the warmer weather has created an ideal environment for the bacteria to grow and multiply. Temperatures in the UK this year have gone above and beyond 30°C, providing Legionella bacteria with warmer water systems to grow in. The seasonality of holiday parks, caravanning sites and summer camps mean they are typically used less frequently throughout winter months. Because of these quieter periods, stored and stagnant water can become a breeding ground for Legionella bacteria, especially when temperatures start to rise. Shower blocks, laundry rooms, swimming pools and spa pools, therefore, all require risk assessing and adequate servicing to ensure any risk is managed and mitigated. The risk of Legionella extends to any hot and cold water system and cooling tower as well as irrigation systems and interactive water features in public spaces which – in warmer weather – attracts the public. Ground maintenance in public spaces, parks and grounds also require careful consideration. Like any other water accessory, dispenser or system, hose pipes can store stagnant water and therefore Legionella bacteria has the potential to grow. When next used, these hose pipes have the potential to release the airborne bacteria in

tiny water droplets for inhalation, posing a risk to the user and anyone nearby. Taking steps to keeping your water systems safe should be done in line with a Legionella risk assessment. It’s not just advisory; if you are an employer or in control of premises, you are responsible for understanding the health risks. Failure to risk assess water systems for Legionella is punishable by fine and a prison sentence. More often than not, when outbreaks occur, there is a serious risk to human health often resulting in fatalities. Under the HSE’s Legionnaires’ disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L8, those responsible for health and safety must adhere to the guidance and recommendations to identify and manage the risk of Legionella in all artificial water systems. With hotter weather often seeing an increased risk of Legionella proliferation, there are a number of precautions to take to ensure that you minimise the risk of cases of Legionnaires’ disease, ensuring that you are compliant with HSE’s ACoP L8. For hot and cold water systems, controlling the temperatures to ensure the water is outside of the Legionella growth band is vital. Keep all hot water systems at above 60°C, with water outlets maintained at a minimum of 50°C; in healthcare environments, this should be 55°C. Likewise, cold water should be kept below 20°C, wherever possible. That is not to say that there is no risk in the winter months, but water below 20oC will mean the Legionella bacteria are dormant.

Water outlets that are infrequently used should be flushed regularly to avoid stagnation. Evaluating the usage of the water systems – in the risk assessment and ongoing following the risk assessment – will determine how regularly the outlet should be flushed. As a guide, any outlet that has not been used for a week or longer should be flushed for at least 3 minutes. Even more effective, reducing the amount of water stored will limit the stagnation of the water and reduce the potential for the growth of Legionella bacteria. If this is not possible, flushing or draining all systems will reduce the risk – and should be outlined as a control measure in the risk assessment. Where temperatures are scorching, air conditioning units and evaporative cooling towers are used frequently. Having appropriate control measures in place can prevent potential outbreaks from Legionella; chemical dosing, water treatment, sampling and regular maintenance can ensure water systems are safe to operate and use. Ensuring staff are appropriately trained in Legionella awareness, risk assessment and their responsibilities can support in effective Legionella management and control. Not only that, suitable and sufficient training of all staff involved in Legionella risk management is a key requirement of the regulations. No matter what the season, you can read more about who is responsible for managing your water systems here. If you require support in managing Legionella, conducting your Legionella risk assessments or want general advice on what to do, please get in touch with Socotec by calling 0845 603 2112.

EAG International & VAE a raTHEr SurPrISInG SHoW on 15th-17th January 2019 leisure business owners from around europe and beyond will travel to excel london for the 10th eag international & visitor attraction expo. product offering with a wide variety of amenities, including traditional amusement games such as air hockey, vending, play, and even go karts and children’s electric vehicles. Some have gone further with the addition of complete FEC’s,” revealed Karen. While EAG International & VAE may not have been on the radar for all holiday park owners, others have realised that the some of the products showcased can have a strong amenity value and a real impact on the bottom-line. EAG International & VAE is an event like no other; it is owned entirely by the industry it serves and exists exclusively for the benefit of its exhibitors and visitors, many of whom play an active role in the show’s development. Originally an amusements and coin-op event, EAG International was already evolving to reflect changes in out-of-home leisure, and this process was accelerated with the launch of the co-joined Visitor Attraction Expo in 2013. Organiser Karen Cooke explains: “There is now a great deal of crossover between sectors that were previously regarded as unrelated. We’ve seen FECs moving into outdoor play and operators of outdoor attractions extending their season with indoor offerings. Immersive Virtual Reality attractions which were once the preserve of large theme parks are now even being introduced into pubs. Operators of holiday parks and caravan sites have been quick to seize the opportunity and are enhancing their

In any business with a high fixed cost, incremental revenues are important. When correctly chosen and sited, amusement products can have a transformational effect. The right products will also have a substantial amenity value, delivering fun for the whole family and encouraging them to remain on site. Ultimately they can give the holiday destination a competitive edge in an increasingly fickle market. In January, ExCel will become home to a vast array of games; basketball and sports machines, automated bowling, laser and immersive VR games, kiddie rides, inflatables, photo booths, pinball, prize vending, redemption games and associated plush and prize merchandise, darts machines, football tables, skill games, video games, water games, arcade games, to mention but a few. The latest Go Karts and children’s vehicles will also be on show, as will the latest

developments in indoor and adventure play. Many of the available products feature current licensed entertainment brands for added appeal, and a surprising number are web-enabled, allowing your guests to share their experiences with friends back home. Technology is now core to the out-of-home leisure sector and the show is home to suppliers of payment technologies, business management systems and also loyalty cards and interactive wristbands. Of equal importance to the vast array of products on display is the available advice on how optimise their performance. EAG International & VAE has a reputation for being a friendly and sociable show. Many of the show’s exhibitors have a long experience in their particular markets and are more than happy to advise and to share best-practice. Entry to EAG International & VAE and its educational seminars is free of charge. The show’s home, Excel London has won international awards for its facilities and accessibility: with its own stations railway stations on London’s DLR, convenient access to the UK’s motorway network and reasonably priced parking on-site. January is the perfect time for investing in product for the coming season so put a day or two aside to join the park operators who’ve already discovered EAG International & VAE. www.eagexpo.com
