THE MAGAZINE OF

ECO RESORT NETWORK

WELCOME TO SHARE – AND TO SPETSES!

Whether you’re joining us in person for the Eco Resort Network gathering or reading this magazine from afar, I’d like to offer you the warmest of welcomes.

This is already the fourth year of organising this special event, and I still can’t quite believe I get to call this work. Every year, this gathering looms large in my calendar; not just as a professional commitment, but as my favourite project of the year. If I had a penny for every person who’s asked to carry my bags or sneak into my suitcase, I probably wouldn’t need to work at all!

Without doubt, I’ve never come across a more inspiring and uplifting group of people than those who make up the Eco Resort Network community. You bring with you not only a deep passion for what you do, but also a genuine drive to learn, grow, and contribute to the wider world. Just being in your presence is energising, and I leave each gathering with my heart full and my mind buzzing with ideas.

To those of you who return year after year; and who keep the energy alive throughout the seasons in our WhatsApp group and on LinkedIn; a special thank you. You are the ones who keep the spirit of the network thriving, and it’s through you that new members find us, join us, and inspire us in return.

Over the next few days, if all goes to plan, you’ll be touched by the quiet magic of this gathering. You’ll learn; not just about the industry, but perhaps about yourself. You’ll make new friends, forge lasting business connections, share ideas, laugh, dance, and grow.

Here’s to another unforgettable chapter together.

WHITNEY SCOTT

PRINCIPAL & CO-FOUNDER OF WALDEN

Whitney Scott is the Principal and Co-Founder of Walden, where she leads the delivery of market intelligence and strategic insights for businesses across the outdoor industry.

With a focus on developing data-driven products, she helps outdoor companies simplify operations, enhance customer segmentation, and foster industry transformation. Whitney’s work at Walden is anchored in empowering businesses to innovate, streamline, and scale sustainably, ensuring they remain competitive while preserving the wilderness itself.

Whitney can also be found through “A Bit of Whit” – her journalistic initiative that offers insights across industries, further underscoring her commitment to fostering transformative change and education in the business of the outdoors.

Prior to founding Walden, Whitney spent over a decade in leadership roles at Kampgrounds of America (KOA), including as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Chief Marketing Officer. There, she spearheaded global brand initiatives, driving revenue growth and developing creative strategies to elevate customer experiences in the RV and camping sectors.

She also pioneered KOA’s accommodation-only glamping brand Terramor where she acted as the CMO and COO in its early years. Outside, Whitney and her husband are active in introducing her two young children to the amazing activities and benefits of nature.

ROBYN WOODHEAD

CO-FOUNDER OF WHITE DESERT ANTARCTICA

After an expedition to Antarctica in 2006, Robyn turned her attention to the other end of the planet and skied to the North Pole, becoming the first South African to reach both the North and South Poles. Later that year, she and her partner Patrick, a fellow polar explorer, founded White Desert. Today, she divides her time between London, Cape Town, and Antarctica.

The business is the perfect way to combine her marketing, sustainability and management acumen with her experience of the polar regions.

The idea for White Desert was born during her 2006 expedition when she spent two months alone in a tent in the coldest place on Earth. With ample time to reflect, she questioned why only scientists and the occasional polar explorer ever had the chance to see the true Antarctica—the vast, untouched interior. While thousands of tourists visited the continent’s edge on cruise ships, the heart of Antarctica remained largely inaccessible. Determined to change that, she envisioned a way to bring others to experience its surreal beauty while ensuring the venture remained environmentally responsible. From the outset, sustainability was a priority, with solar power

being an obvious choice given Antarctica’s 24-hour daylight.

Today, White Desert is a reality. The company operates three luxury camps and is the only one in the world to fly business jets to Antarctica. It is also the only air operator on the continent to be fully CarbonNeutral® since 2007. In 2021/22, White Desert delivered the first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Antarctica, with the goal of inspiring others to transition to cleaner fuels.

Beyond White Desert, Robyn has played a key role in shaping climate change policies and governance in Antarctica. She served on IAATO’s Executive Committee and was elected Chair in 2022, where she led efforts to develop and implement a carbon reduction strategy for all operators. In 2024, she launched a new Foundation—one of her long-held dreams—to encourage guests to contribute to blue carbon, green technology, science, and education projects. One of the Foundation’s key initiatives involves planting seagrass meadows in South Africa, which absorb approximately 30 times more carbon than rainforest projects while also supporting and uplifting local gateway-toAntarctica communities.

Since its inception, the WILD HEARTS program has grown rapidly. In 2024 alone, it reached over 3,000 children through 9 partner organizations and trained more than 150 teachers, environmental officers, and community stewards.
