The new visitor centre in Callander has been on the go for a year now. It is the de-facto hub for the Trossachs Trail, and will soon be able to offer visitor accommodation. Details of the Development Trust’s creative efforts can be found on page 18. Have you heard the buzz? Not the local gossip, but the actual buzz of bees. You can now attend Bee School in Kilmaronock, courtesy of Heather from Gartocharn. You’ll probably be buzzing on your way out, but definitely in a good way! See page 28. Free lunch? Maybe not. So how about free events? On page 44 you can check out what Milngavie businesses have been preparing for you. Everyone is busy getting back up to speed and our activity listings reflect this. Indoors and out there’s a ton of stuff to do, on our What’s On pages 42-43 and our Fitness Page 48. OK, places to go, people to see. Let’s get going.

10 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk L ocated on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond, just north of Balmaha, Cashel comprises 1200 hectares of a former sheep farm. In 1996, the farm was acquired by the Royal Scottish Forestry Society with funds from the Millennium Forest Trust to deliver on their ambitious plan to create a new native forest for Twenty-fiveScotland.yearson, Cashel Forest Trust looks after 300 acres of ancient and restored native woodland, home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including adders, red squirrels, and badgers. Last year they received NatureScot funding to support a seasonal ranger to assist with the site's management, given the unprecedented pressures faced during the COVID 19 pandemic.

Emma Sandhu

Emma Sandhu saw the job advertised and visited Cashel for a quick walk to check it out. Emma's walk lasted five hours, taking in many of the paths and habitats, marvelling at the richness of the wildlife whilst falling deeper and deeper in love with the place.

Having been successful in getting that temporary job, Emma's focus was to raise the profile, gather a group of conservation volunteers and work with a host of groups from a wide variety of backgrounds, including many harder-to-reach visitors.

Through these initiatives, new visitors to Cashel included Glasgow mental health charity Flourish House, the Vale of Levin Academy's Additional Support Unit, the Forest Therapy Institute, and the National Park's junior Thankfully, rangers.Emma's time at Cashel has been extended this year, with more good work to raise Cashel's profile and help people enjoy this fantastic forest. The result has included some successful events that help to raise funds to look after the site.

A day parking pass for Cashel is £3. However, whilst the nearby honeypots of East Loch Lomond often have full car parks, Cashel's car park rarely reaches capacity. Its visitor centre has two free-of-charge accessible toilets. A network of 5 circular walking paths leads from the visitor centre. These are well-made and maintained footpaths, with picnic benches and many outstanding viewpoints scattered along the Thetrails.Pine Path, also known as Grand Lomond View, has similarly stunning elevated views of Loch Lomond and islands as nearby Conic Hill, but without the enormous crowds that its more famous neighbour attracts. As this edition is published, summer will soon turn into autumn, with Cashel one of the most beautiful places to see the vivid autumn gold.

C allander’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) reopened in June 2021 in its new location close to Ancaster Square at 55 Main Street, the former Royal Bank of Scotland building.

The VIC is a Development Trust project staffed with a full-time paid manager, currently a jobshare, and a team of around 20 friendly and knowledgeable volunteers.

With uncertainties about continuing as a tenant of the National Park Authority across the street, Callander Community Development Trust decided to buy the property.

The VIC is seen locally as an essential part of the thriving town centre and busy tourist destination on a crucial strategic route to and from the West

A Callandervisitorsresourcewelcomeforto

The centre is funded primarily by the Development Trust through its Community Hydro Fund. It has also received grants and donations from the Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, Stirling Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, and Sir Walter Scott Steamship Trust.

Work is underway to transform the upper floor from offices into visitor accommodation, which will be rented out and expected to provide additional income.

The centre has been much busier this year with a marked increase is 55 Main in the numbers of foreign travellers, especially from the Netherlands, Germany, and other European countries, the USA, and many other parts of the world. Last year was noticeable for the number of people from different parts of the UK discovering Scotland on a first-time visit, with many returning this year. The recently revitalised Trossachs Trail has helped with a website, leaflets, and a large map on the wall, which all the volunteers use to point out the places of interest around Callander, as well as the main walking and cycling routes.

The centre is another excellent example of action by towns and villages in the Park Life area to save and operate local facilities. The local volunteers warmly welcome visitors from near and far and provide excellent ideas of what to do and where to stay based on their local knowledge.

Using lawn-friendly specialist stump grinding machines, Lomond Stump Removal will grind your tree stumps into mulch, removing stumps 6 to 12 inches below ground level. The mulch is used to fill the hole to ground level. This enables the ground to be restored back to grass or flower bed, or it can be paved over. autumn gardening tips

1Mulch vegetable beds and herbaceous borders; this will benefit the texture and structure of the soil, so your plants will be stronger the following season.

7Plant soft fruit whilst the ground is still warm, to establish a good root system for a strong, healthy crop next year.

6Rake leaf litter from lawns and borders, to make homemade leaf mould - an excellent soil improver.

8Plant up Autumn/Winter containers, to provide colour throughout the colder months. Evergreen shrubs, Hellebores and Skimmias, Cyclamen and winter flowering Violas make great displays, lasting until early spring.

3Plant spring flowering bulbs in borders and containers. Narcissus, Alliums and other bulbs can be planted now. Tulip bulbs should be planted in November once the soil temperature has cooled down.

5Continue to harvest potatoes, squash, courgettes, fennel etc. Harvest the last beans and cut down foliage, leaving the roots in the soil to release nitrogen into the soil for next year's brassica crop.

23|

2Now is the time to start sowing hardy annual flowers, such as Nigella, Ammi Majus, Sweet Rocket and Cornflowers. In the vegetable patch, sow spring onions and oriental leaves, which will overwinter and produce an early crop in spring

STEP 5 Brush the pastry with the egg yolk glaze and bake for about 10 minutes until risen and golden. Bake for a further 2 minutes with the oven door slightly ajar, to help crisp the pastry. Remove from the oven and slide onto a wire rack.

STEP 2 Heat the oil in the pan and sauté the vegetables with the thyme and some seasoning for about 7 minutes until softened. Pour in the sherry and bubble for 5 minutes until well reduced. Return the pancetta to the pan and pour in the stock.

STEP 4 Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a £1 coin. Cut out 2 or 3 rounds, using a small saucer as a template. Carefully place the pastry rounds on a large, non-stick baking sheet and score the surface in a diamond pattern, using the tip of a small sharp knife.

STEP 6 Meanwhile, add the chicken to the sauce and reheat until the meat is warmed through. Check the seasoning and divide the chicken mixture between your warmed serving plates. Top each pile with a pastry round and serve.

50g pancetta, chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 1 leek, trimmed and sliced 200g celeriac, peeled and cut into small cubes 200g butternut squash, peeled and cut into small cubes Handful of thyme sprigs, leaves only 50ml dry sherry 200ml chicken stock 100ml crème fraîche 200g puff pastry Plain flour, for rolling 1 egg yolk, beaten with 1 tsp water 250g cooked chicken, cut into chunks Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

H eather Jackson from Gartocharn keeps bees in her garden. Her interest started with a love of honey and a fear of wasps. This rewarding hobby has now become the highly popular Bee School, which opened this spring at Kilmaronock’s Old Kirk. The idea grew as producers of the BBC TV programme 'Show me the Honey' contacted Heather to see if she would mentor 14-yearold Harry Hose from Balloch, who appeared on the show. Heather jumped at the chance and is delighted that Harry now has four hives of his own and helps with the school’s safaris and Forinspections.Heather, this fitted with her passion for making beekeeping more than just a hobby for retired people. Judging by the massive interest in the Bee School, her passion has resonated with many people.

Heather couldn't believe that The Bee School as a name hadn't been taken and was able to get it both registered at Companies House and legally trademarked. The Old Kirk at Kilmaronock was not only local to her home in Gartocharn, but it combined a training venue with an adjoining field, both of which are vital for the

Attendees to the Bee School discover more about wild bees, which are endangered. They taste different locally sourced honey before getting suited up to inspect the hives and look for the Queen Bee. Then, following some hands-on experience, it's a return inside for some coffee and cake.

There is strong interest for the Bee School to establish a corporate event. Many attend the Bee School for the fun experience, whilst around 5% are interested in keeping bees. Heather supports those interested, offering ongoing mentoring and equipment through a subscription service. Find out more at thebeeschool.co.uk

BEE SCHOOL

One of the year's highlights has been the summer school afternoons in July for 6–10-year-olds. Not only did they get up close with the bees whilst wearing junior protective suits, but they also designed and built the sections inside the hive, all colourfully decorated.

Heather even recently hosted some of the country's top marketing CEOs who attended a course whilst being in Glasgow for a conference. These top executives were quick to declare the Bee School the highlight of the conference!

Having talked to a few local businesses, the impression I got was that it was a quieter start to the tourist season than usual and although our accommodation, boat tours and water-sports have been kept fairly busy there does seem to be slightly fewer people around than usual. Of course a spell of good weather always encourages everyone to get back into the great outdoors and make the most of our beautiful Scottish countryside so hopefully everyone will be kept busy for the next little bit! It appears to have been a good summer for wildlife on Port nellan, with many of our visitors reporting sightings of Roe Deer, Hare and Osprey fishing on the loch. It’s been several months since I last saw the White Tailed Eagle but both my Dad and a neighbour think they may have seen one in the last week so its great to hear that they are still in the area.

Stand

S ummer is well and truly underway now we’re heading for Autumn and although today the farm is basking in glorious sunshine, the last couple of months have been a bit of a mixed bag with our fair share of wind and rain. It seems there is no doubt that climate change is having an affect on the weather with record temperatures and a severe lack of rainfall down south (and even in the East of Scotland) but so far the changes have been far milder in the West of Scotland. That said there have been a couple of occasions on the farm where we have had to move our cattle from one field to another to give them more shade and better access to water in the hot weather.

milngavie So much more than the start of the West Highland Way.

There has been significant invest at the start of the worldfamous West Highland Way to welcome over 40,000 walkers to trek the 96 miles to Fort William. There are huge street banners to point everyone to the digital efforts that promotes all businesses through the town’s website Milngavie.co.uk and very active social media channels.

T hey say there is no such thing as a free lunch, and there probably is not. However, in Milngavie, there are plenty of free to attend seasonal events throughout the year covering festive Christmas tree light switch on’s, Classic Car Shows and a ‘Healthy Habits’ fun day to encourage all the family to get more active.

The town is also littered with beautiful multi-tiered planters that are meticulously maintained by Milngavie in Bloom.

how does all this happen?

The town has won ‘Walking Awards’, Keep Scotland Beautiful awards, an award for the most beautiful High Street in mainland Scotland.

There are also interactive trails for all the family with pumpkins, easter bunnies, elves, santa, and snowmen being featured in shop windows for the kids to find, with lucky winners receiving a Milngavie Gift Card to spend in over 50 businesses in the town, including Tesco and M&S.

Official figures show that Milngavie’s

pedestrian precinct attracts around 1.5 million people a year and this is partly due to the Milngavie BID’s efforts to ensure the town looks inviting and creating a buzz about the place.

In 2014, the Milngavie Business Improvement District (BID) was voted into existence by businesses in Milngavie town centre. For 8 years, every business has paid an annual compulsory levy to pay for all the activities that take place. Since the start of the Milngavie BID, businesses have collectively raised over £550,000 to continually develop and promote Milngavie.

Milngavie was even described by former Cabinet Minister, Aileen Campbell, on twitter as “You guys are absolutely incredible - thank you for your commitment and innovation” to describe Milngavie’s digital efforts during the pandemic.

Since the pandemic, there have been 15 new businesses opening including a 3D-Cake shop, a specialist Whisky and Gin emporium, and a family Gym to highlight just a few. In the main, businesses are family owned and run, with roots in Milngavie going back 30 years and more.

If you’re thinking about somewhere worth visiting this summer and as we head into the autumn, consider a visit to Milngavie. There are over 150 thriving and innovative businesses offering an excellent range of products and services that we all need. The businesses pay to put on the events that are genuinely free. However, the shops, bars and restaurants are all busy on event days and in the follow up visits from local people.

Scotland is a nation of towns like Milngavie, described by the Community Wealth Minister, Tom Arthur MSP as ‘a model town’, so if you’re thinking about a wee day out then a visit to Milngavie needs added to your places to visit list.

The overall winning design will be professionally created and displayed by STEP throughout their birthday year.

Jenn McArthur, Marketing and Business Development Manager at STEP said: “2023 will be an exciting year for us, it’s not every day you turn the big 40!

STEP has a long-standing history in Stirling and this competition offers school pupils the chance to be part of that history. They will also have their design professionally created, turned into the real thing, and used across our print and digital platforms. The design brief is completely open, so we are really excited to see all of the different ideas we receive – but not looking forward to having to choose only one!”

C hildren and young adults across the Forth Valley have the chance to be a part of history by designing a logo that will be displayed on STEP’s various platforms throughout 2023, added to their vast archives and seen by thousands.

52 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk H over a year since I completed the West Highland Way Ultra run. I now find myself in a very similar situation. However, this year I’ve set myself an ever bigger challenge. On the 13th of September I’ll be attempting to run 20 marathons in 20 consecutive days, starting off in Glasgow with the final one being the famous London marathon. A question that I seem to be getting asked quite often is why?

James has a 20 x 20 vision for fundraising

my fundraising page last year you’ll understand how important the subject of mental health is to me. All the money that I raise will be going directly to Mind who are a charity who’s mission is “to provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.”

Any donations would be hugely appreciated and what I’d love to happen is for people to come out and join me on my journey. Even if it’s just for a couple of miles, coming out to not just support me but support a cause that is extremely important in today’s society. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/james-semple2

There are a multiple of reasons as to why I’m taking on this challenge, whether it being the sense of purpose I feel when setting myself these enormous challenges or the enjoyment I have when completing something physically demanding. Most importantly its the effect running has had on me mentally. Not only does it act as a release from what I like to call the noise of life, but when I’m out running I feel completely Ifdifferent.yousaw

As Paul says, it is a great way to help plan a trip ‘The idea for the book came from one of the most visited guides on my See Loch Lomond website. People are looking for ideas of what to do and where to visit on a trip to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, and increasingly, they’re looking for new experiences, activities, and places to explore. Thankfully there are many amazing opportunities, and the challenge was to get the list down to 101!’

L ocal travel website See Loch Lomond has recently published a new hardback photograph/guidebook, ‘101 things to do in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs’.

Back in June, RSPB Scotland announced plans to apply for a licence to release a small number of beavers at RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond, which is part of Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve.

In 2009, a reintroduction project, known as ‘The Scottish Beaver Trial’, took place at Knapdale which saw the first beavers living wild in Scotland for over 400 years. Outwith the official reintroduction there is a well-established population of beavers living in the Tay and Forth river catchments.

Eurasian Beavers are native to the UK but were persecuted for their fur, meat and ‘castoreum’ – a secretion used in perfume, food, and medicine. This relentless hunting by humans led to their extinction in the UK by the 16th Century.

In 2019, beavers were given European Protected Species status in Scotland with the view that they should expand their range naturally with no need for further reintroductions. Despite this, up until 2021, any beavers that came into conflict with humans, where their activities couldn’t be managed through mitigation measures, were killed under licence, or translocated to limited enclosed release locations in England.

Beavers are adept natural engineers, with the ability to create wetlands, restore woodland and improve conditions for many species including dragonflies, fish and other mammals like water voles. Frequently coined as an ‘Ecosystem Engineer’ or ‘Keystone Species’, because of having significant positive influence on their environment, the benefits of beavers are well documented. Moreover, this enigmatic species attracts great opportunity for wildlife tourism, bringing social and economic benefits to areas where they are found.

In 2021 the Scottish Government made the decision to authorise licenced beaver translocations within the country, to reduce the need for culling.

Myth: Beavers destroy tress Reality: While beavers certainly do gnaw down trees the overall impact of this ‘coppicing’ process on woodland encourages new growth, a greater variety of tree species and increases biodiversity by providing more homes for insects, birds and mammals. There are also a variety of mitigation methods, such as wire around the base of trees, that can prevent damage to trees on private land.

Myth: Beavers eat fish Reality: Beavers are vegetarians, mainly eating aquatic plants, grasses, tree bark, twigs and leaves. In fact, they can boost fish numbers because the pools they create provide excellent spawning grounds for fish which could help threatened species such as the Atlantic salmon.

Loch Lomond National Nature Reserve is a fantastic area for a range of wildlife, and ecological assessments have shown it has potential to be particularly good for beavers. The areas of open water, woodland and aquatic vegetation make this an ideal location for them to thrive.

bringing beavers back (to loch lomond)

The first successful licenced translocation took place at Argaty Red Kite Centre in 2021. Now other organisations and landowners are starting to follow suit including RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond which is applying to be a release site.

Myth: Beavers cause damaging floods Reality: This one can be true, especially if beaver activity blocks drains on prime agricultural land but, in the right place, their floods create new wetland habitat that is immensely beneficial for biodiversity. Therefore, the translocation of beavers is important; moving animals from areas where their activity is causing issues to more suitable habitat, rather than using lethal control, is a win-win for both beaver and humans.

Great fun for us but can be very scary for our pets! What to do if you have a rework fearty? • Speak to your vet now- noise phobia o en worsens with time, start desensitisation of your pet from an early age. • Keep your pet indoors, close your curtains or blinds and create a den, turn your TV or radio on a bit louder than normal to disguise the noise. • Walk dogs before it gets dark. • If they seem scared comfort them • If you have tried this in the past and your pet was still scared contact the vet to discuss anti-anxiety medication(these can take a little time to work so be organised). Some medications need to be ordered in so speak to your vet ASAP. • If your pet is worried for the rst time this year, contact the vet as noise phobia can also be linked to pain, a full check over will rule this out. • Don’t forget your small pets in the garden, treat them to a night indoors as reworks can worry them too. Have fun and stay safe. Team Jackson’s
